Handball game was included separately in the 1936 Olympics at Berlin. After the second world war, the international handball federation came into existence. After that Handball was excluded from the Olympic games, but since 1972 and 1976, it is being played for men and women, respectively. Handball was introduced in India in the year 1970.

Handball was introduced by a famous gymnast Konrad Koch of Germany, in the 19th century. This game became popular with time slowly. Its main drawback was that it used to be considered a game of athletics. A show match of Handball was held in the 1928 Olympics at Amsterdam. In this Olympics, 11 countries participated in the competition.

  • 1. A team consists of upto 14 players.
  • 2. 7 players from the playing team and remaining are substitutes.
  • 3. One timeout is permitted to each team during every half of the match.
  • 4. Handball should be made of either leather or synthetic material and its surface should not be highly shiny and smooth.
  • 5. One free throw will be given to the team, if an extra player has been changed in foul manner in the opponent team.
  • 6. Every player of a team should enter or leave the field through the substitute line assigned for that team.
  • 7. Only goalkeeper can enter into the goal zone. Any other player can enter in the goal zone after completing the process of goal making.
  • 8. The ball shall be held by the player for 3 seconds.
  • 9. Same player cannot touch the ball twice continuously.
  • 10. Players of the opponent team should stay at 3 meter distance from the thrower for a free throw.

What is team handball?

Team handball is a fast-paced indoor or outdoor sport that is typically played by two teams with six players on each side in a 130' x 65' handball court. The goal of the game is to score more points than your opponent by dribbling, passing, and then shooting a ball into their goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins. Modern handball is a team sport with an emphasis on developing not only physical fitness and agility, but also teamwork and communication skills. 9 Dynamic Team Handball Stations and Games for PE

Ignite your students' enthusiasm with these nine interactive team handball lesson activities, featuring fun station and small-sided game ideas!

A- Stations

Stations typically involve engaging activities that focus on one or more specific movement skills such as passing, catching, shooting, defending, and goalkeeping. During the station-based activities, students are given the opportunity to practice their skills and build confidence in a safe and supportive environment.

1: Target Throw: Students can work on their throwing skills by taking turns launching the ball towards a target on the wall from various distances. They must stand behind the start line cone, select a distance to throw from, and then throw the ball in an attempt to hit it! After they have completed two throws, they should go back to the start line and repeat this process until for a set amount of time. Keeping and recording scores can add an exciting element to the station!

2: Partner Wall Throw and Catch: Students should alternate between passing and receiving the handball with a partner, each taking turns to throw it off the wall. As they become more comfortable with this activity, encourage them to gradually move further away from the wall when making their passes. This simple activity can help develop their coordination and improve communication skills!

3: Pass and Move: Traveling from one end of the court to another, have students pair up and pass a handball back-and-forth. As they reach the other side, they immediately run their way back to the starting line. It is important for them to lead their partner (pass in front of their movement)when passing the ball and maintaining eye contact with it when receiving it.

4: Run, Jump, and Shoot: Students have the opportunity to showcase their agility and skill as they sprint from a marked cone, propel themselves over the goalkeeper line, and shoot for the goal while in mid-air! They must take off before the goalkeeping line and release it before they land as they would in a real game. After collecting their ball, students shift to the side and wait for their next turn on the court.

5: Spot Shot: Students first dribble from the start line to a poly spot and then take aim at the goal. If they score, they get to keep that polyspot. On unsuccessful attempts, students must return the ball to their place in line for another turn. The goalkeeper will do all it can to block each shot - but if even one sneaks past them, be sure to claim your reward of that coveted polyspot!

B- Small Group Games

Small group games (small-side games) are an excellent way to further develop your students' learned handball skills while having some competitive fun. A team handball game (small-sided) usually involves fewer players than traditional team sports, making it easier for everyone on the court to be involved and stay engaged.

6: Handball Keep-Away (2 vs 1): 2 Offensive players strive to throw and receive a ball while a defensive player attempts to impede or intercept it. The thrower is permitted to pivot, but must remain stationary. A guard or interceptor should be situated no less than 3 feet away from any thrower. When a ball has been blocked or intercepted, students should switch roles for optimal practice.

7: 2 vs 1 and a Goalie: Students will alternate between offense and defense in engaging, action-packed rounds. Use a soft ball for safety. One team should have one defender and a goalkeeper for defending goals, and the other team has two offensive players working together to pass the ball around the goalie line at least three times before attempting a shot on goal. Only the goalkeeper can be inside the free throw line. Offense and defense should switch after a predetermined number of shots have been taken.

8: Catch Ball: Students compete in exciting Catch Ball matches as they try to make the handball bounce twice in their opponents' court. The game consists of 2 teams of 4 to 6 players. This is one of the best catching games for PE classes. If a player drops it and catches it after one bounce, or if the ball only bounces once before its caught, then play is still alive! Every time a team is able to get two successful bounces on their opposition's side of the court, they are rewarded with 1 point!

9: Small-Sided Handball Games: During small-sided team handball, students play in smaller groups (each team consists of 3 to 5) with modified rules set forth by the PE teacher. There is no contact or reaching in allowed while playing; if the ball goes out of bounds, it will be thrown back into play by the opposing team to one of their court players. Depending on age and skill level, dribbling during play can either be optional or a part of the game. If no dribbling is in effect, players may take up to three steps before they must pass the ball. Only the defending goalkeeper is permitted within the designated crease area and shots must be taken before crossing over it.

6 Handball Activities for PE Classes

With the IHF World Men’s Handball Championship just around the corner, it’s the perfect time for kids to get inspired and try something new. Handball is a sport that flies largely under the radar, but is a fantastic, gender-neutral sport that can slot easily into PE lessons.

We’ve gathered a handful of handball activities ideal for PE classes.

What is handball?

Blend netball, basketball and football into one and you’ll get something that resembles handball. This sport has been around since Roman times in one form or another and has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years.

Teams of 7 – 6 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper – compete against one another for two 30-minute halves (for a standard match). Players can pass the ball, dribble (with more or less the same rules as basketball) and shoot while in possession, while the other team works to defend and intercept.

Only the goalkeeper can use their feet, and no player is allowed to enter the goal area except the goalie. It’s a great game for kids to play, as handball can easily be adjusted to different skill levels and is perfect for mixed-gender groups.

6 handball activities for PE

Bringing handball into physical education lessons is easy to do, and only requires minimal equipment.

The following activities all work to build skills relevant to handball or are alternative ways to play the game for beginners.

1. Ball control and handling drills

Working on ball control and handling is the first step to playing handball. You wouldn’t play a tennis match without learning how to hold a racket!

Some exercises that work to improve ball control and handling:

  • Make a figure 8 with the ball, weaving it between the legs and gradually increasing speed.
  • Pound dribble. While stationary, kids ‘pound’ the ball into the ground as fast as they can, bouncing to knee height.
  • Wraps. Kids have to move the ball around their heads, waists and ankles without dropping it.

2. Piggy in the middle

A playground classic that is brilliant for building handball skills. Piggy in the middle encourages children to learn defence, think outside the box and improve their passing skills.

The most popular pass in handball is a one-handed, over-the-shoulder throw. This is commonly used in piggy in the middle, giving kids a chance to practise.

Make sure the games are short; no more than a few minutes. Whoever is in the middle is likely to get frustrated if they’re the piggy for too long!

Island hopping

Similar to piggy in the middle, but a more advanced version. ‘Island hopping’ involves a group of children dribbling between cones (i.e. islands) while two children – the pirates – work to stop them.

It’s a great way to introduce dribbling into the exercise, an important skill in handball. 4 cones (the islands) are set up in corners, roughly 4 metres away from one another. Groups of 2-3 kids will stand on each island – they have to dribble the ball from one cone to another while two children in the centre area work to steal it back. This exercise develops both dribbling skills and the ability to find space.

3. Relay passing

Passing and catching while on the move is a tricky skill to master. Before they make the jump to an actual game of handball, it’s a good idea for kids to practise through relay passing.

Two groups of children line up on opposing sides and run parallel to one another (make sure there are at least a few metres between the two groups). One row will have a ball each, while the other is empty-handed: the challenge is to pass to the other team while both are running; the person that catches the ball can join the back of the throwing queue and vice versa.

If you really want to focus on passing variation, you can alternate passing types at the end of each run-through so they develop a wider passing range:

  • Overhead pass
  • Bounce pass

This may be a little tricky for beginners. For less confident or younger groups, a stationary relay drill with a single ball works just as well!

4. Dodgeball

Dodgeball is of course a sport in and of itself, but it does require some of the same skills as handball. If you want the children to improve their throwing and catching skills, dodgeball is a fun game that doesn’t need a whole lot of prep.

The speed of throws in dodgeball – and the need to hit a target – transfer well to handball. Improving fitness is only a bonus!

5. Hit the cone

Practise handball without the goal. Get the kids to work on their precision throwing while learning the game. The goals are replaced with a single cone on each side; to win a point, you simply need to knock over the opposite team’s cone.

All the normal rules of handball still apply, though this is usually played on a much smaller court.

6. Beginner handball

Once the children have mastered the basics, they can play handball on training wheels. Making the game slightly easier as they learn the ropes will help children to progress quickly and keep them engaged.

Here are a few adjustments you can make to ensure it’s beginner-friendly:

  • Be flexible on the 3 steps rule. Allow up to 6 steps with the ball.
  • No contact.
  • Smaller court.
  • Smaller team sizes. A max of 5 players.

How do you play handball in PE?

Handball is a great invasion game that many children can pick up quickly. Here are our tips to get started playing this fun game in your PE lessons:

  • Use a soft ball which isn’t too big (therefore easily caught) to help give players confidence.
  • Don’t worry about spending precious funds on special resources, goals can easily be large mats or benches.
  • Start with some simple throwing and catching drills.
  • When you’re ready to try a game, ensure all children are involved – and have fun!

What are the main skills needed in handball?

  • Catching – this may sound obvious but being able to catch the ball with one or both hands while both stationary and on the move is crucial.
  • Passing – accurate passing is key, ideally at around head height. Again, players should practise passing with both and either hands.
  • Shooting – similar to passing, shots at the goal need to be accurate, but with more force than passing.
  • Interception – without making any contact with the opponent, players must try to intercept the ball in order to stop the other team from scoring.

What are the benefits of playing handball?

Apart from being a great sport to improve overall physical literacy, handball requires teamwork and communication, teaching children to work together.

Of course, handball is a fast-paced game, so children will benefit hugely from the cardiovascular endurance it promotes.

Building A Team Handball Unit

Last spring, I took my grade 5-6 students to an interscholastic Team Handball tournament. The tournament was full of great plays, great teachable moments, and great fun.

The lead up to the event was actually perfect because the curriculum outcomes I had already planned on introducing at that time of the year could be taught through Team Handball (you can learn more about how I mapped out this year’s curriculum by checking out my Purposeful #PhysEd blog posts )

The Team Handball unit went great, and my students demonstrated a great amount of learning both throughout the unit and at the tournament. That being said, I thought I’d share my unit with you!

Setting Up The Assessment Tools

Ok, so first things first: Let’s check out the curriculum outcomes that were the foundation of this unit:

1. Falls Back: Gets in his/her defensive zone

2. Protects The Goal: Positions himself/herself between the object (carrier) and the target

3. Protects The Goal: Blocks throws or shots

Those outcomes would not only serve as the foundation of my unit, they would also serve as my evaluation criteria.

I then created a Numbers gradebook , making sure that each evaluation criteria was broken down into additional observable aspects. There were eleven aspects in total.

Doing this type of work before the unit not only helps make my assessment much easier to perform, it also helps me improve the quality of feedback I provide to my students throughout the unit. For example, if Jimmy is at level 1 in the “Falls Back” criteria, I already know what to tell him to help him get to level 2 (e.g. “You’re getting back on defence, but you’re taking your time. You need to hustle back before your opponents can set up an attack”)

Planning The Unit’s Lessons

Focus : Falls Back: Gets in his/her defensive zone

Game : Prairie Dog Pickoff

Prairie Dog Pickoff is a great game to lead up to handball since, if you layer it properly, it allows you to introduce a lot of the rules relating to the ball carrier in Team Handball (e.g. three seconds with the ball, three steps with the ball, dribbling the ball). It also encourages students to take risks throughout the game: they will have to leave their foamie /prairie dog alone to go try to knock over someone else’s.

To start, I only focus on attacking other students’ goals (i.e. their foamies) and on getting back to your own prairie dog after attacking to protect it from your opponent’s attacks (transitioning from offence to defence). If your foamie is knocked over, you simply find a new open space for your base (i.e. hoop and foamie) and get back into the game.

Tactical talks during this part lesson revolve around: how to protect your prairie dog, what to do after your attack, and why it is important to get back to your base as fast as possible.

Once the students demonstrated that they were comfortable with that, we would then add a new layer that had students join the player who knocked their foamie over. Students had to work together as a team to set up attacks and defend their “colonies” (their collective bases).

In this section, we started talking about how different positioning on defence could reduce the chances of your opponents’ attacks being successful.

Focus : Protects the Goal: Positions himself/herself between the object (carrier) and the target

Game : 4 Corners Handball

I started this lesson off by going over what we learned in the following lesson about falling back on defence as fast as possible. We talked about Team Handball being a transition sport: how your role switches between being on offence/defence depending on which team has possession of the ball.

We then started the game, but with no goaltenders. The students were shocked. However, through tactical discussions, they eventually understood that this meant that they needed to not only fall back as soon as the lost possession, they also needed to work together position themselves in such a way that forced their opponents to take difficult shots.

Lesson Three

Focus : Protects the Goal: Blocks throws or shots

Mini Handball is exactly like the full form of Team Handball, except that it takes place in much smaller court. This lesson started off with the class going over rules relating to the 6m lines (i.e. how only the goaltenders – or jumping attacking who release the ball before landing – are allowed inside the 6m line)

It was only in this lesson that we introduced goaltenders into the game. Playing Mini Handball allowed for two simultaneous games to take place at the same time in my gym. This not only increased activity time, it also allowed each student to experience more opportunities to put what they had learned so far in the unit into practice.

After a few short games with goaltenders, I brought the students in and asked the goaltenders how easy their job was. Unsurprisingly, they all said that being a goaltender in Team Handball was no easy feat. Through tactical discussions, we talked about what could make their job a little easier. The class came up with solutions like falling back on defence as fast as possible (which we learned in the first lesson), working as a team to form a wall to force the opponents to take a difficult shot (which we learned in lesson two), and to work as a team to block as many shots as possible by getting their hands up and in front of their opponents (which is what we focused on during the rest of this lesson).

Lesson Four

Focus : Falls Back, Protects the Goal

By now, the students were able to play the full version of Team Handball. I was so impressed by how well they were implementing the concepts they had learned throughout the previous classes.

Since I only have one handball court, not all students could play at once. That worked out fine though, because the students who had to wait for their turn got to use that time to fill out Google Form Self Assessment questionnaires.

I have no doubt that the learning that took place throughout this unit is what lead to our teams not only performing so well at the tournament, but having so much fun playing Team Handball.

The unit was a success and most students received fantastic grades for their work throughout it. However, I’ll be honest with you here, it didn’t only last four lessons (although I had planned for it to be four lessons). The first lesson actually took place over two sessions, and the same goes for lesson three. In my opinion, that’s perfectly fine: It’s important to make sure that your students don’t feel rushed and that each student is getting as many opportunities as they need to experience success.

The aim of this study is to identify the extent of students learning outcome base on the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains through Comprehensive Assessment (CA) in teaching handball. The pre-experimental; one shot case study was conducted in secondary schools in the district of Larut, Matang and Selama in Perak. The respondents were 17 teachers and 508 form 2 students. The content validity for CA was r=.82. Reliability for cognitive domain (r=.78), psychomotor (r=.90) and affective (r=.83). Results showed that the level of students' cognitive achievement (M=67.35, SD=11.75) is good. The learning outcome during training was at manipulation level (M=2.22, SD=0.47) but raised up to articulation level (M=3.48, SD=0.77) during game sessions in psychomotor assessment. The affective domain assessment showed that the learning outcome was at characterize level (M=4.35, SD=0.77). Based on the results of the study, boys' were even better than girls’ in the domain of cognitive, psychomotor and affective. Boys are able to apply cognitive skills into practical acts (psychomotor) and practice affective values as required by the teacher. CA is a suitable and standard tool for assessing students’ achievement while teaching handball in physical education. It is hereby suggested that further studies are needed for all types of games in secondary schools in future

In the present study, the effect of frequent, immediate, augmented feedback on the increase of throwing velocity was investigated. An increase of throwing velocity of a handball set shot when knowledge of results was provided or not provided during training was compared. Fifty female and seventy-three male physical education students were assigned randomly to the experimental or control group. All participants performed two series of ten set shots with maximal effort twice a week for six weeks. Castle Ball

Purpose of Activity:

Description of Idea

Depending on the space available have many games going on at the same time. It works best when teams are 3-on-3 and no more than 4-on-4.

The object of the activity is to try to work with classmates to knock down the castle of the other team, while protecting your own. One point is awarded each time a castle is knocked down, even if a player bumps into his\her own castle. Castles that are knocked down should be set up as quickly as possible so players can continue playing.

The game area is separated by a center line, which players cannot cross to retreive a ball (this center line is optional--you decide). It is also best to have a throwing line inside each teams area to make sure all balls are thrown from the same distance. Teams are not to throw at castles inside of that line. Players should be encouraged to try different throwing strategies, i.e; different angles, speeds, trajectories, bounced off the wall or the ceiling etc. They should also be encouraged (and even recognized with scoring rewards) to pass the ball to teammates to surprise the defenders or to make sure everyone gets to throw the ball. In defending the castle, players should be alert, on the balls of their feet, and cooperate wittheir teammates to form strategies that will best defend their "castles".

Variations:

Have them throw using only non-dominant hand to make it more difficult.

2) Each team has 3 "castles"...the game continues when all 3 "castles are knocked down. Here's the catch...If a castle is knocked down, the team can rebuild it...meaning the other team has to knock down the other two "castles" before it is rebuilt COMPLETELY...anytime all three "castles" are down, the other team wins.
