You are not being examined on your ability to use Microsoft Word. The Skills Team have therefore provided you with a template that already has most of the formatting work done for you. This has been approved centrally by the university.

This page has links to the template, guidance document and videos to support you with using the official University of Hull MS Word templates for creating undergraduate dissertations or independent projects or taught masters dissertations. This is not a mandatory template, but using it will streamline the formatting of such a long document.

The University has created templates which can help take the stress out of formatting your dissertation or final year project.

Dissertation Title Page

The title page of your dissertation or thesis conveys all the essential details about your project, including:

  • The title of your project
  • Your full name (including student number if required)
  • Clarification of whether this is a dissertation or thesis document
  • The name of your academic department
  • The name of your university
  • The degree name that the dissertation or thesis has been written for (e.g. Doctor of Philosophy)
  • The date (month and year) that you will submit the document
  • The name of your supervisor(s)

This page can also be referred to as the dissertation cover page when your degree program is at the undergraduate or Masters level.

Format of the Title Page

Your university will provide you with the exact formatting requirements of your dissertation title page. This will include how to present the above information but also the font size to use, line spacing and the size of margins. For example, a graduate school may require the title to be in all caps, all text to be double-spaced and margins on the binding side to be 4cm. Don’t include the page number and have all text centred. You may also need to include the university logo. The APA style is commonly referred to for guidance on how to format research documents. This guide from University College London on their requirements is also an interesting read.

Example of a Dissertation Title Page

The example below is what a dissertation title page would usually look like for a Masters degree project in the UK. You can use this as a template when writing your own title page. The format presented here is also applicable for a doctoral dissertation or thesis title page.

The title page may be followed by an approval page, signed by the project chair and any other committee members. After this comes your abstract, presented on a separate page and then your table of contents. Some institutions may also require a copyright page to be included. Whilst the title page doesn’t have a page number, pages after this may use Roman numerals with the traditional page number format starting after your table of contents.

The term partial fulfillment means that this research document was one of several requirements for you to obtain your degree. For a Master’s degree, the other requirements will typically include exams and coursework.

Follow the advice in this guide to ensure your title page is in the correct format before final submission of your research project. This will be a normal part of undergraduate and graduate study.

The University provides templates in Word and LateX which meet the requirements set out in the Regulations.

Word or LaTeX?

LaTeX is extensively used by engineers and scientists because it handles maths and equations brilliantly, and by linguists because it can cope with multiple (and obscure) languages.  The University now offers Professional Accounts via Overleaf. Sign up for an account via the University of Southampton portal .

Word is the most widely used word processing software in the university. Unless you will be including lots of special character sets or equations, we would recommend using Word.

Whole thesis template

Use this to produce the whole thesis in one long Word document. It contains all of the required sections from title page to bibliography, with refreshable Tables of Contents, Table of Figures and Table of Tables.

Copyright Statement coversheet

All e-theses require the University thesis copyright statement  is included in front of the main title page in the final e-version submitted.  The wording of the statement should not be altered in any way. 

The Word template (PC or Mac) above has the statement included but earlier versions did not. Should the statement be missing from your file it should be:

  • added before creating the final pdf version 
  • located in front of the main title page using the document below 
  • should not be included in the numbering of the thesis.

LaTeX templates currently do not include instruction on how to add the statement so it will need it to be added individually as a single double-sided page. Alternatively, add the pdf version into your final pdf file using Adobe Acrobat Pro.

The statement is not required in the print copies submitted for examination or as a final copy.

How to make sure your thesis is an archival PDF/A

Your final University e-thesis must submitted in an accessible and archival format so that it will be readible in years to come, currently this format is PDF/A-3 .

  • Mac users If you are using Word for Mac then start by using the Save As PDF facility. This produces a really good baseline file to continue working on in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. If for any reason you are not happy with the output as this process, then try converting the file by using Adobe Acrobat Pro's own 'Create a PDF from'. If you are still not happy with the result then contact serviceline to discuss other options.
  • PC users For PC users the Adobe Acrobat Pro DC facility will produce the best output. You'll find the steps below under the heading  Create the PDF for PC  below.
  • LaTeX to PDF/A-3 If you are using Overleaf, the automatic pdf conversion will be create a PDF/A file. Overleaf have created instructions on how to make sure your LaTeX PDF conforms to the archival standards . Please note we would prefer that you chose a-3b (propritising display) or a-3u (prioritising searchability) rather than a-1b. You may find the following paper helpful: Moore, R. (2014). MLA title page

The MLA style is commonly used in:

Note: A title page is not required in MLA style; however, in cases where your department implicitly requires you to include it or when presenting a group project, ensure you have a dissertation title page.

After a few blank lines:

  • Mention the paper’s title in the title case centered midway through the page.
  • Use double-spacing and keep the font consistent throughout the document.

However, most MLA papers use a header instead of a dissertation title page.

The header is written on the same page as the introductory paragraphs rather than on its own page, like the dissertation title page.

The APA style version of the dissertation title page includes the following details:

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical early steps in your writing process . It helps you to lay out and organise your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding what kind of research you’d like to undertake.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation, such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review, research methods, avenues for future research, etc.)

In the final product, you can also provide a chapter outline for your readers. This is a short paragraph at the end of your introduction to inform readers about the organisational structure of your thesis or dissertation . This chapter outline is also known as a reading guide or summary outline.

While there are some inter-institutional differences, many outlines proceed in a fairly similar fashion.

  • Working Title
  • ‘Elevator pitch’ of your work (often written last).
  • Introduce your area of study, sharing details about your research question, problem statement , and hypotheses . Situate your research within an existing paradigm or conceptual or theoretical framework .
  • Subdivide as you see fit into main topics and sub-topics.
  • Describe your research methods (e.g., your scope, population , and data collection ).
  • Present your research findings and share about your data analysis methods.
  • Answer the research question in a concise way.
  • Interpret your findings, discuss potential limitations of your own research and speculate about future implications or related opportunities.

Chapter outline example British English

It can be easy to fall into a pattern of overusing the same words or sentence constructions, which can make your work monotonous and repetitive for your readers. Consider utilising some of the alternative constructions presented below.

Example 1: Passive construction

The passive voice is a common choice for outlines and overviews because the context makes it clear who is carrying out the action (e.g., you are conducting the research ). However, overuse of the passive voice can make your text vague and imprecise.

Example 2: IS-AV construction

You can also present your information using the ‘IS-AV’ (inanimate subject with an active verb) construction.

A chapter is an inanimate object, so it is not capable of taking an action itself (e.g., presenting or discussing). However, the meaning of the sentence is still easily understandable, so the IS-AV construction can be a good way to add variety to your text.

Example 3: The I construction

Another option is to use the ‘I’ construction, which is often recommended by style manuals (e.g., APA Style and Chicago style ). However, depending on your field of study, this construction is not always considered professional or academic. Ask your supervisor if you’re not sure.

Example 4: Mix-and-match

To truly make the most of these options, consider mixing and matching the passive voice , IS-AV construction , and ‘I’ construction .This can help the flow of your argument and improve the readability of your text.

As you draft the chapter outline, you may also find yourself frequently repeating the same words, such as ‘discuss’, ‘present’, ‘prove’, or ‘show’. Consider branching out to add richness and nuance to your writing. Here are some examples of synonyms you can use.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical first steps in your writing process. It helps you to lay out and organise your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding what kind of research you’d like to undertake.

When you mention different chapters within your text, it’s considered best to use Roman numerals for most citation styles. However, the most important thing here is to remain consistent whenever using numbers in your dissertation .

All level 1 and 2 headings should be included in your table of contents . That means the titles of your chapters and the main sections within them.

The contents should also include all appendices and the lists of tables and figures, if applicable, as well as your reference list .

Do not include the acknowledgements or abstract   in the table of contents.

What format is the template (doc, pdf, ppt, etc.).

The dissertation template is provided as a Google Doc. You can download it in MS Word format or make a copy to your Google Drive. You’re also welcome to convert it to whatever format works best for you, such as LaTeX or PDF.

What types of dissertations/theses can this template be used for?

The template follows the standard best-practice structure for formal academic research projects such as dissertations or theses, so it is suitable for the vast majority of degrees, particularly those within the sciences.

Some universities may have some additional requirements, but these are typically minor, with the core structure remaining the same. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to double-check your university’s requirements before you finalise your structure.

Is this template for an undergrad, Masters or PhD-level thesis?

This template can be used for a dissertation, thesis or research project at any level of study. It may be slight overkill for an undergraduate-level study, but it certainly won’t be missing anything.

This depends entirely on your university’s specific requirements, so it’s best to check with them. As a general ballpark, Masters-level projects are usually 15,000 – 20,000 words in length, while Doctoral-level projects are often in excess of 60,000 words.

Thesis or Dissertation Title Page – Free Templates

Your thesis, dissertation , or research paper’s title page (or cover page) should include all of the pertinent details about your work. Typically, it includes;

  • Title of dissertation or thesis
  • The author’s name.
  • Type of project (e.g., dissertation,thesis, research paper)
  • Department and university’s name
  • The course of study (e.g., Master of Arts)
  • The submission date

Your dissertation topic or area of research, your student ID number, the name of your supervisor, and the logo of your university may also be included.

The Format of the Title Page

Usually, your supervisor or the university will specify exactly what information should be on the title page of your dissertation and how to structure it. Verify whether there are any special requirements for font size, spacing, and margins.

The citation style may have an impact on the structure of your title page. There could be rules for page numbering, alignment, and required items.

What should be included in the dissertation title page?

Your name, department, organisation, degree programme, and the submission date should all be listed on the title page of your thesis or dissertation.

Should I add a title page to an MLA paper?

An MLA document often does not require a title page. Instead, a header is often at the top of the first page. The exclusions occur when:

  • Your teacher needs one,
  • For a group project project

In certain circumstances, you should present the same information on a title page rather than in the header.

How do I add an image on the title page?

The title page is often used only to present information and does not contain any graphics. Before doing so, confirm with your supervisor if it’s okay to use a picture on the title page. If you do want to use one, be sure to find out if the image’s originator has given their consent.

Add a note beginning with the word “Note” exactly beneath the image recognising its source (italicized and followed by a period). Add a reference and a copyright credit.

Format your thesis

When submitting thesis work for assessment, there are several sets of requirements that must be met.

All submissions must meet the specifications listed within the ‘ Nature of the thesis ’ section in the Policy on Research Degrees . These include the requirement to present your thesis for examination, and for deposit after examination.

In addition, your work must also meet the different University requirements set out below - those listed for ' all theses ' and any style specific requirements. Where relevant, you may also need to meet additional subject or programme-specific requirements - these will be set out in your departmental Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) handbook.

Types of thesis

There are two main types of thesis.

  • A monograph or traditional thesis : a unified, single author document comprising a number of chapters with an introduction and conclusion.
  • A journal-style thesis : a document that incorporates one or more chapters that are in a format suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed title alongside a supporting commentary.

Most postgraduate researchers (PGRs) will likely submit a monograph thesis, however journal-style theses are becoming increasingly common in certain disciplines. If you are interested in submitting a journal-style thesis you should check that your school/department/centre permits this and read the University guidance .

Practice-based PGR programmes

If you are doing a practice-based programme, you may be required (or permitted) to submit an alternative assessment format instead of, or in addition to, a thesis (eg a portfolio of work).

Requirements for all theses

All thesis types must adhere to the following requirements:

You must abide by the Policy on Transparency of Authorship in PGR Programmes, including generative AI, proofreading and translation .

To meet electronic thesis (e-thesis) guidelines, your main thesis text must be submitted as a PDF document.

If your thesis will include any other file formats in addition to PDF (eg audio files, data spreadsheets), you should refer to our e-thesis file format guidance .

Once deposited, your e-thesis will be publicly available via the White Rose eTheses Online (WREO) unless you have arranged an embargo.

Printing and e-theses

While theses are submitted and deposited electronically, they need to be presented in such a way that they can be easily read in electronic form and printed without issue (eg if this is required by the examiners or by your funder). For more information on preparing a printable copy of your thesis, see our hardcopy thesis guidance .

Your e-thesis needs to be an accessible document , meaning that it should be easy for anyone to read or reformat, and can be accessed by people using assistive technology (such as screen readers).

There are some simple steps you will need to take to ensure that your e-thesis meets accessibility standards.

  • Use the headings function within your chosen software package to produce a structured document.
  • Add alternative text to images/videos/graphs/tables etc.
  • Always use the number/bullet point function within your software package when creating a list.
  • Use meaningful hyperlinks.
  • Use tables sparingly and format them with a header row and, where appropriate, a header column.

The title page of every volume should only include the following information in the order listed, and on separate lines:

  • the full title of the thesis and any subtitle
  • the total number of volumes, if more than one, and the number of the particular volume
  • the full name of the author, followed, if desired, by any qualifications and distinctions
  • the qualification for which the thesis is being deposited (for example PhD or MA by Research)
  • the name of the University
  • the name of the School, Department or Centre in which the research was conducted. You must refer to the list of approved names on the submit your thesis web page
  • the month and year the thesis was first submitted for examination.

If there is a cover page included in advance of, and in addition, to the title page, this may be a single colour with clearly visible text in a contrasting colour. The cover should have the same information as the title page, as listed above.

The abstract should follow the title page. It should provide a synopsis of the thesis, stating the nature and scope of work undertaken and the contribution made to knowledge in the subject area. It should appear on its own on a single page and should not exceed 300 words in length. The abstract of the thesis may, after the award of the degree, be published by the University in any manner approved by the Senate, and for this purpose, the copyright of the abstract shall be deemed to be vested in the University.

In this section you must confirm that your thesis meets the requirements of the 'Nature of the Thesis' section Policy on Research Degrees , and in particular that it:

  • is your own original work (or if work has been done in collaboration with others, full disclosure of the names of your colleagues and the contribution they have made)
  • has not been previously submitted for any degree or other qualification at this University or elsewhere (unless an internal resubmission).

You must also state whether any material in the thesis has been presented for publication (including if under review) with full references. The minimum required is as follows:

I declare that this thesis is a presentation of original work and I am the sole author. This work has not previously been presented for a degree or other qualification at this University or elsewhere. All sources are acknowledged as references. For further guidance on the inclusion of published material and authorship, see the University requirements on journal-style theses .

The text and, wherever possible, all the material of the thesis (including illustrations), should be based on A4 page size (297mm x 210mm).

Typographic design

Text and its setting (font, size, line spacing, margins) must be chosen to ensure legibility.

Text, in general, should be black, sans serif and should not be embellished (ie no general use of coloured text or fancy fonts, no section separators, etc).

For ease of reading, the size of character used in the main text should be no less than 11pt.

Text should normally be set with even or proportionate spacing between words. Word division at the ends of lines should be avoided, if possible.

It is recommended that 1.5 line spacing or equivalent is used, although lines that contain mathematical formulae, diacritical marks or strings of capital letters may need additional space.

It should be clear when a new paragraph is starting and where matter in the text is being quoted.

A bibliographical reference must be given for every work, published or unpublished, cited in your thesis.

Citations should be in a consistent and approved format as specified by your school, department or centre. References should be collated in a reference list or a combined reference list/bibliography. 

Please refer to referencing guidance issued by your school, department or centre and the University's guidelines for further information.

After the deposit of your examined thesis in WREO, and before you leave the University, you should ensure that your research data is retained and deposited in a suitable data repository or, more rarely, disposed of securely. Research data that supports the findings in your thesis should normally be retained, unless there are legal, ethical, funder or contractual requirements that would prohibit its retention.

Please refer to Regulation 7.4.2 for important information on how to format your thesis.

The Library Services guide 'Presenting your thesis' has been written as the standard for all theses presented for research degrees in the University of Birmingham. 

It offers guidance on the practicalities of producing your thesis in a format that is acceptable for examination and for deposit in the library. This guide does not deal with the content and academic standard required of a thesis and on these matters you are advised to consult University Regulations, your supervisor and guidance issued by your School.

 Thesis word limit

On submitting your thesis for examination you are required to complete a declaration form confirming the word length of your thesis. You should therefore be aware of the maximum word length for your thesis. See  Regulation 7.4.2 (d).

The stated maximum number of words excludes tables, diagrams (including associated legends), appendices, list of references, footnotes and endnotes, the bibliography and any bound published material. For information on referencing styles see the  iCite – referencing at the University of Birmingham  webpages.

A thesis that exceeds the maximum number of words will not be accepted for examination unless permission to exceed the stated word count has been granted by the Research Progress & Awards Sub Panel. Permission to exceed the stated word count is only granted in exceptional circumstances. If you consider that you will not be able to meet the stated word limited, you are advised to discuss this with your supervisor at an early stage.

 Language of your thesis

If any material is included in your thesis which is a result of collaborative working, you must include details of how much of the work is your own and how much is that of other people. See Regulation 7.4.1 (h).

It is also important to seek the prior agreement of those other people to make your thesis available in the University eTheses Repository. 

 Previously published or submitted work

You may include work that has already been published providing the work is properly integrated, either in the thesis or as an appendix to which reference is made - see  Regulation 7.4.1 (g). It must be adequately referenced and you are advised to consult with your supervisor if you are unsure about the inclusion of any previously published work in your thesis.

You may not include material for assessment which has already been submitted for another degree awarded at this or any other University, unless all of the conditions set out in Regulation 7.4.1 (f) are satisfied.

 Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of cheating and is a serious academic offence. It arises where work submitted is not the student's own and has been taken from another source. The original material is then hidden from the marker, either by not referencing it properly, by paraphrasing it or by not mentioning it at all.

All theses submitted for examination are checked through plagiarism detection software.

 Editorial help for PGR theses

A thesis submitted for examination at the University of Birmingham must be solely the postgraduate researcher’s own work (except where University Regulations permit the inclusion of appropriately referenced collaborative research or work – see Regulation 7.4.1 . A postgraduate researcher must not employ a ‘ghost writer’ to write parts or all of the thesis, whether in draft or as a final version, on his/her behalf.

Editors, whether they are formal supervisors, informal mentors, family or friends or professional, need to be clear about the extent and nature of help they offer in the editing of University of Birmingham PGRs theses and dissertations. Supervisors of PGRs also need to be clear about the role of the third party editors as well as their own editorial role.

PGRs may use third party editorial assistance (paid or voluntary) from an outside source.  This must be with the knowledge and support of supervisors and the use of third party editorial assistance must be stated in the thesis acknowledgement page.

A ‘third party’ editor cannot be used :

  • To change the text of the thesis so as to clarify and/or develop the ideas and arguments;
  • To reduce the length of the thesis so it falls within the specified word limit;
  • To correct information within the thesis;
  • To change ideas and arguments put forward within the thesis; and/or
  • To translate the thesis into English.

A ‘third party’ editor can be used to offer advice on:

  • Spelling and punctuation;
  • Formatting and sorting of footnotes and endnotes for consistency and order;
  • Ensuring the thesis follows the conventions of grammar and syntax in written English;
  • Shortening long sentences and editing long paragraphs;
  • Changing passives and impersonal usages into actives, vice versa as may be appropriate;
  • Improving the positioning of tables and illustrations and the clarity, grammar, spelling and punctuation of any text in or under tables and illustrations; and
  • Ensuring consistency of page numbers, headers and footers.

Where a third party editor is used it is the PGR’s responsibility to provide the third party editor with a copy of this statement (Word - 20KB)  and ensure they complete the Third Party Editor Declaration Form (Word - 32KB)  confirming their compliance with this statement.

When submitting the thesis the PGR must record in the Acknowledgements page the form of contribution the ‘third party’ editor has made, by stating for example, “this thesis was copy edited for conventions of language, spelling and grammar by ABC Editing Ltd”.

These rights generally belong to the student, but if your work is considered to be commercially significant students may be required to assign their rights to the University.

Dissertation content and format

The regulations in this section cover the content and format of a research degree dissertation (thesis) submitted for examination and subsequently deposited with the library.

General requirements.

  • English language requirements 

Dissertation length

Creative works, professional practice, ethical approval, preliminary pages, main body of the text, digital media and research data.

17.1. PGR students  must submit a dissertation based on their research activities. Students are responsible for the content of their dissertation and for the decision to submit for examination. Comments from supervisors on the contents of the dissertation are only advisory.

17.2. The dissertation together with the oral examination must fulfil the relevant criteria for the award of a research degree.

17.3. The dissertation must comply with the University’s academic integrity standards .

17.4. Following their award, PGR students must deposit the definitive version of their dissertation with the Library for public access . The dissertation will be publicly available in full unless a request to defer or to redact is approved.

17.5. Where stated, the regulations on dissertation content and format also apply to submissions for doctoral degrees by published work.

English language requirements

17.6. PGR students must submit their dissertation or submission by published work in English, except for:

17.6.1. Students in the School of Modern Languages, who can choose to submit their dissertation in the language of the culture studied.

17.6.2. In exceptional cases, students who have agreement from the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) to submit their dissertation in another language. In these cases, the student must make a request to the Faculty PGR Director, who will make a recommendation to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) for a decision.

17.7. Where a dissertation is submitted in a language other than English, it must contain an extended summary in English. For example, a summary must be at least 5,000 words for a Doctor of Philosophy dissertation.

17.8. The maximum word counts for dissertations are listed below. References, appendices and lists of contents are excluded from the word count.

∗ There are separate rules on word counts for the PhD in musical composition, for combined PhDs in musicology and composition and for the MPhil in Musical Composition.

17.9. Doctoral degrees by published works have separate rules on the word count.

17.10. Examiners can refuse to examine a dissertation if it exceeds the maximum word count. Examiners can also direct the student to reduce the word count as part of required corrections after the examination.

17.11. PGR students can submit a dissertation containing creative works alongside a written commentary.

17.12. The commentary, which will form the focus for examination, must be of sufficient length to provide an extensive analytical account setting the creative works in their research context. For example, a commentary for a Doctor of Philosophy must be at least 30,000 words.

17.13. There are separate rules for dissertations that contain musical composition for the Doctor of Philosophy, the Master of Music, and the Master of Philosophy degrees.

17.14. The definitive version of the dissertation deposited with the library must combine a permanent record of the creative works with the commentary.

17.15. PGR students can, where relevant, include material related to the professional practice in which their research is embedded, such as portfolios of work and project reports. This must be accompanied by an extensive commentary that provides a critical evaluation that sets the material in its academic and research context. The commentary will form the focus of the examination.

17.16. If a PGR student has obtained ethical approval for their research, they must include a statement in their dissertation including the date approval was granted and any approval reference number/s.

17.17. PGR students must include preliminary pages at the beginning of their dissertation. This includes submissions for doctoral degrees by published works. The preliminary pages must be presented on separate pages and in this order.

17.17.1. Title page.

17.17.2. Abstract.

17.17.3. Dedication and acknowledgements. This page is optional.

17.17.4. Covid-19 statement. This page is optional.

17.17.5. Author’s declaration.

17.17.6. Contents page/s.

17.18. PGR students must arrange the title page as follows.

17.18.1. The title of the dissertation at the top of the page. If the dissertation is in a language other than English, the title must be given in that language and in English.

17.18.2. The student’s name below the title in the centre of the page.

17.18.3. The following statement at the bottom of page. ‘A dissertation submitted to the University of Bristol in accordance with the requirements for award of the degree of … in the Faculty of ...’ followed by the name of the school and month and year of submission.

17.18.4. The word count (which excludes references, appendices and lists of contents) at the bottom right-hand side of the page.

17.19. PGR students must include an abstract of no more than 300 words. If the dissertation is in a language other than English, the abstract must be given in that language and in English.

Dedication and acknowledgements

17.20. This page is optional. PGR students can include a personal dedication and acknowledgment of the role of others in their work and life.

Covid-19 statement

17.21. This page is optional. PGR students can include a Covid-19 statement in their examination copy to highlight how restrictions related to the pandemic modified or limited their research and the contents of their dissertation. The policy on PGR dissertations and the impact of Covid-19 restrictions  provides more information.

Author’s declaration

17.22. PGR students must include the following declaration unless their degree is part of partnership for a dual or joint award with another University. Students must print their name rather than sign the declaration.

I declare that the work in this dissertation was carried out in accordance with the requirements of the University's Regulations and Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes and that it has not been submitted for any other academic award. Except where indicated by specific reference in the text, the work is my own work. Work done in collaboration with, or with the assistance of, others, is indicated as such. Any views expressed in the dissertation are those of the author. SIGNED: [print name]. DATE:

17.23. Where the degree is part of a dual or joint award partnership with another University, students must include the following declaration. Students must print their name rather than sign the declaration.

I declare that the work in this dissertation was carried out in accordance with the requirements of the University's Regulations and Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes and that it has not been submitted for any other academic award (other than one authorised as part of a dual or joint award approved in advance by the University). Except where indicated by specific reference in the text, the work is my own work. Work done in collaboration with, or with the assistance of, others, is indicated as such. Contents page/s

17.24. PGR students must include a contents page/s. The contents list must indicate the page number for each item and must include:

17.24.1. Chapters, including any sections and subsections.

17.24.2. A reference list.

17.24.3. The bibliography.

17.24.4. An abbreviation list.

17.24.5. Any appendices.

17.24.6. A list of tables and illustrations covering the tables, photographs, diagrams, etc. in the order they appear in the text and with the relevant page number.

Text and numbering

17.25. PGR students must present the text in the dissertation in double or 1.5 line spacing and in a font size that ensures readability. The pages must be numbered consecutively at the bottom centre of the page.

Referencing style

17.26. PGR students must set out citations and references in a style appropriate for the discipline and which is consistent throughout the dissertation.

17.27. If a PGR student uses their published works as full chapters in the dissertation, they must follow the policy on

17.28. For the examination version of dissertations, PGR students must submit any digital media, such as databases or digital images, appended to the dissertation in a standard format. The student must include a statement in their dissertation covering the programme/s used and the file size/s.

17.29. For the definitive version deposited with the Library, PGR students must combine digital media files with the dissertation text in a single pdf file where this is practicable.

Handing in your dissertation/project

You should submit online.  Dissertation/project must have a cover sheet as the first page (see below).

Important:  You should make additional copies for yourself - to show sponsors, potential employers etc.

Ethical Review

All students should consider the ethical implications of their project, following the ethical guidelines , and should obtain ethical approval if necessary.

Word length

The dissertation should be no longer than 12,000 words (9,000 words for MSc Management for Information Technology) including any quotations in the text, but excluding the abstract, footnotes, tables and their captions, the bibliography and appendices. All extensive listings of data etc should be included as appendices. Program code can also be included as an appendix but we would prefer it to be uploaded electronically via Canvas, or on a USB drive or similar attached to each copy of the dissertation.

Complete and sign the cover sheet. It includes a declaration stating that you have read and understood the definitions of 'plagiarism' and 'collusion' as set out in the Examination and Assessment Handbook . Warning: if your dissertation is subsequently found to contain material that has been plagiarised, or to be a product of collusion with another student, you risk failing your MSc.

Suggested format

General structure: Title Page, Abstract, Acknowledgements, Table of Contents, Chapter 1, Chapter 2 ....Chapter N, References, Appendices.

For the main body of the dissertation, use a proportional font. For program code, a monospaced font is advised.

See the left-hand links for the required dissertation content and details of the marking criteria. Where programs form a part of the project, you should expect to be asked to demonstrate a working implementation to your supervisor.

Guide to formatting your dissertation in Word

This guide explains how to format your dissertation document using Word. It includes: setting margins; line spacing; heading styles; and inserting images and tables. Click on the link below.

  • Word dissertation guide
  • Wait until the end to create your table of contents. Do not do this manually.  Word has a tool that does this automatically.
  • Word will also create your table of figures, tables, and equations, or you can create your own label.
  • Do not create headings manually using bold/indenting. Use Heading Styles. This allows you to use the Table of Contents tool later.
  • Use the Section Break tool in Word. It allows you to control where page numbers appear and in what format.
  • Use Ctrl + Enter to insert new pages.  If you just hit the Enter key, your formatting may become distorted.
  • If you type in capitals by mistake, you don't need to start again - Word has a tool that will change the case for you.

Presentation of Thesis/Dissertation

Before you submit your thesis/dissertation for examination you must ensure that it is correctly formatted and bound in accordance with our Statement of Procedures:

Presentation of Theses/Dissertations for the Degrees of MPhil/PhD/EdD/DEdPsy/DClinPsy/MbyRes: Statement of Procedures

Please read the document carefully as it sets out the format that should be used for the content of your work including the sequencing of your contents, page numbering, margins etc. If you have any questions about the correct format to be used for your Bibliography and references please contact your Supervisor.

When you submit your thesis/dissertation for examination please remember to include a correctly worded title page as the first page of your thesis and sign each copy before submission.

Alternative Form of Submission

Changes to the guidance on the presentation of theses have been made resulting in a re-definition of what we mean by the term ‘thesis’ which reflects the wide variety of ways in which research is carried out and assessed.

This allows, for example, for the production of a thesis in an alternative format, which may include either:

(a) the presentation of part or all of the thesis in an alternative format e.g. it may be a multimedia document (e.g. an element or the thesis in its entirety, which is presented in a format appropriate perhaps for presentation at a conference)

(b) A constructed text such as a piece of art, or a record of professional practice in the form of a series of case-studies, which must be accompanied by a commentary

How do I apply to submit my thesis in an alternative format?

  • Review the guidance in section 3 of the ‘Presentation of Theses/Dissertations for Degrees in the Faculty of Graduate Research: Statement of Procedures’ ;
  • If you consider that you have a proposal which meets the relevant criteria you should first discuss this with your supervisor, if your supervisor considers that you proposal is appropriate they will direct you to complete a Change to Format of Submission form in consultation with them;
  • This form will then be considered by the Dean of your College, and if they consider it is an appropriate proposal, you will be given permission to submit your thesis in line with the format of thesis and guidelines for submission laid out on your Change to Format of Submission form ;
  • You will then need to refer back to this paperwork in order to ensure that you submit your thesis according to the agreed format: as such you should append a copy to your MyPGR documents list; you will also need to attach a copy of your approved ‘format of submission’ form to your submission paperwork.

Please note that any proposals to change the format of your thesis must be made as early as possible in your period of study.
