25 Great Kindle Unlimited Middle Grade Books

best educational books on kindle unlimited

Last year, I signed up for Kindle Unlimited , but because it was a bit tough to weed through the wide selection to find great Kindle Unlimited middle grade books, I hardly ever used it. Also, I get an overwhelming number of eARCs (Advance Reader Copies) these days so it’s rare that I’m reading a book I actually bought on my Kindle.

That said, I’ve done most of the hard work for you by sifting through the current offerings (these books may be taken off the list every six months to a year). If your kids have a Kindle and a Kindle Unlimited account and are looking to find immersive stories about tweens, this is the list for you.

We Dream of Space

We Dream of Space - Great Kindle Unlimited Middle Grade Books

Published: May 5, 2020

Cash, Fitch, and Bird Nelson Thomas are three siblings in seventh grade together in Park, Delaware. In 1986, as the country waits expectantly for the launch of the space shuttle  Challenger , they each struggle with their own personal anxieties. Cash, who loves basketball but has a newly broken wrist, is in danger of failing seventh grade for the second time. Fitch spends every afternoon playing  Major Havoc  at the arcade on Main and wrestles with an explosive temper that he doesn’t understand. And Bird, his twelve-year-old twin, dreams of being NASA’s first female shuttle commander, but feels like she’s disappearing.

The Nelson Thomas children exist in their own orbits, circling a tense and unpredictable household, with little in common except an enthusiastic science teacher named Ms. Salonga. As the launch of the  Challenger  approaches, Ms. Salonga gives her students a project—they are separated into spacecraft crews and must create and complete a mission. When the fated day finally arrives, it changes all of their lives and brings them together in unexpected ways.

Genesis Begins Again

Genesis Begins Again

Published: January 15, 2019

There are ninety-six things Genesis hates about herself. She knows the exact number because she keeps a list. Like #95: Because her skin is so dark, people call her charcoal and eggplant—even her own family. And #61: Because her family is always being put out of their house, belongings laid out on the sidewalk for the world to see. When your dad is a gambling addict and loses the rent money every month, eviction is a regular occurrence.

What’s not so regular is that this time they all don’t have a place to crash, so Genesis and her mom have to stay with her grandma. It’s not that Genesis doesn’t like her grandma, but she and Mom always fight—Grandma haranguing Mom to leave Dad, that she should have gone back to school, that if she’d married a lighter skinned man none of this would be happening, and on and on and on. But things aren’t all bad. Genesis actually likes her new school; she’s made a couple friends, her choir teacher says she has real talent, and she even encourages Genesis to join the talent show.

But how can Genesis believe anything her teacher says when her dad tells her the exact opposite? How can she stand up in front of all those people with her dark, dark skin knowing even her own family thinks lesser of her because of it? Why, why, why won’t the lemon or yogurt or fancy creams lighten her skin like they’re supposed to? And when Genesis reaches #100 on the list of things she hates about herself, will she continue on, or can she find the strength to begin again?

Ghost Boys - Great Kindle Unlimited Middle Grade Books

Published: April 17, 2018

Only the living can make the world better. Live and make it better.

Twelve-year-old Jerome is shot by a police officer who mistakes his toy gun for a real threat. As a ghost, he observes the devastation that’s been unleashed on his family and community in the wake of what they see as an unjust and brutal killing.

Soon Jerome meets another ghost: Emmett Till, a boy from a very different time but similar circumstances. Emmett helps Jerome process what has happened, on a journey towards recognizing how historical racism may have led to the events that ended his life. Jerome also meets Sarah, the daughter of the police officer, who grapples with her father’s actions.

Once again Jewell Parker Rhodes deftly weaves historical and socio-political layers into a gripping and poignant story about how children and families face the complexities of today’s world, and how one boy grows to understand American blackness in the aftermath of his own death.

While Walt focuses on his program of jazz, podcasts, batting cages, and a “Hug Life” mentality, Noah feels stuck in status quo … until he stumbles on a stash of old love letters. Each one contains words Noah’s always wanted to say to Sam, and he begins secretly creating artwork using the lines that speak his heart. But when his art becomes public, Noah has a decision to make: continue his life in the dugout and possibly lose the girl forever, or take a swing and finally speak out.

At the same time, American flags are being left around town. Gabi, student council president and editor of the school paper, is there to support her friend Yasmany, who just picked a fight with Sal. Sal prides himself on being an excellent magician, but for this sleight of hand, he relied on a talent no one would guess . . . except maybe Gabi, whose sharp eyes never miss a trick. When Gabi learns that he’s capable of conjuring things much bigger than a chicken–including his dead mother–and she takes it all in stride, Sal knows that she is someone he can work with. There’s only one slight problem: their manipulation of time and space could put the entire universe at risk.

The Unteachables

The Unteachables - Great Kindle Unlimited Middle Grade Books

Published: January 8, 2019

The Unteachables are a notorious class of misfits, delinquents, and academic train wrecks. Like Aldo, with anger management issues; Parker, who can’t read; Kiana, who doesn’t even belong in the class—or any class; and Elaine (rhymes with pain). The Unteachables have been removed from the student body and isolated in room 117.

Their teacher is Mr. Zachary Kermit, the most burned-out teacher in all of Greenwich. He was once a rising star, but his career was shattered by a cheating scandal that still haunts him. After years of phoning it in, he is finally one year away from early retirement. But the superintendent has his own plans to torpedo that idea—and it involves assigning Mr. Kermit to the Unteachables.

The Unteachables never thought they’d find a teacher who had a worse attitude than they did. And Mr. Kermit never thought he would actually care about teaching again. Over the course of a school year, though, room 117 will experience mayhem, destruction—and maybe even a shot at redemption.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle SCIENCE FICTION I’ve read this book so many times, I can’t count — many times with my classes as a read aloud — and every time it’s just as fantastic. best educational books on kindle unlimited

The Trials of Apollo: The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan FANTASY The tone of this fantasy chapter book for kids is slightly different than Riordan’s other middle grade books since we’re seeing things from Apollo’s arrogant but bewildered perspective — which somehow Riordan makes appealing to readers. (A hard task, to be sure!) As the misadventures ensue (because life is hard when you have no godly powers anymore), Apollo begins to see himself as less than perfect. In this mythical fantasy book, kids will meet new demigods such as Demeter’s daughter, Meg, and encounter familiar favorites like Percy Jackson .

best educational books on kindle unlimited

Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods written by Rick Riordan, illustrated by John Rocco NONFICTION My kids can’t stop reading and rereading this enormous volume of Greek myths , retold Riordan style with laugh-out-loud writing. Remember all the hilarious chapter titles in Riordan’s Percy Jackson books? And the witty, sarcastic voice of Percy? Yup. All here. My youngest daughter’s favorite chapter title is  Ares, the Manly Man’s Manly Man.  My favorite chapter is:  Hephaestus Makes Me a Golden Llama (Not Really, But He Totally Should) . The writing is engaging, funny, and accurate. Love!

Warriors by Erin Hunter ADVENTURE Both my kids (and I) loved the Warriors cat books about a unique clan civilization of wild cats.  It follows the story of a former house cat who joins ThunderClan.  Not everyone accepts this former domestic cat. He’ll have to prove himself in order to help his clan fight the menacing ShadowClan. These are essential books for cat lovers.

Big magic: creative living beyond fear.

by ELIZABETH GILBERT

Once upon a time, there was a man named Jack Gilbert, who was not related to me – unfortunately for me.

Jack Gilbert was a great poet, but if you’ve never heard of him, don’t worry about it. It’s not your fault. He never much cared about being known. But I knew about him, and I loved him dearly from a respectful distance, so let me tell you about him.

Jack Gilbert was born in Pittsburgh in 1925 and grew up in the midst of that city’s smoke, noise, and industry. He worked in factories and steel mills as a young man, but was called from an early age to write poetry. He answered the call without hesitation. He became a poet the way other men become monks: as a devotional practice, as an act of love, and as a lifelong commitment to the search for grace and transcendence. I think this is probably a very good way to become a poet. Or to become anything, really, that calls to your heart and brings you to life.

"Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari is a groundbreaking exploration of the history of the human species. Harari takes readers on an enthralling journey through time, unraveling the intricate tapestry of human evolution, societal development, and the profound impact of Homo sapiens on the world. With a masterful blend of scholarly research and compelling storytelling, Harari delves into the origins of our species, tracing our remarkable journey from insignificant primates to the dominant force shaping the planet.

Harari's narrative begins over 2 million years ago, when the first humans emerged in East Africa. He skillfully navigates through key milestones in human history, shedding light on pivotal moments such as the Cognitive Revolution, Agricultural Revolution, and the emergence of complex societies. Through his thought-provoking analysis, Harari challenges conventional beliefs and offers fresh perspectives on the forces that have shaped human societies and cultures.

One of the book's most compelling aspects is its examination of the collective fictions that have defined human behavior and societal structures. Harari argues that the ability of Homo sapiens to believe in shared myths, such as religion, money, and political systems, has been a driving force behind our species' success. This thought-provoking exploration of the power of collective imagination invites readers to contemplate the nature of reality and the impact of shared beliefs on human civilization.

Furthermore, "Sapiens" delves into the far-reaching consequences of human actions, exploring the ecological, social, and technological transformations that have reshaped the world. Harari prompts readers to ponder the implications of humanity's relentless pursuit of progress, raising crucial questions about the sustainability of our endeavors and the ethical dilemmas posed by our advancements.

Through Harari's eloquent prose and meticulous research, "Sapiens" transcends the boundaries of traditional historical literature, offering a captivating blend of anthropology, sociology, and philosophy. It challenges readers to reevaluate their understanding of human history and contemplate the future trajectory of our species. As a result, "Sapiens" stands as a tour de force in nonfiction literature, inviting readers to embark on a thought-provoking odyssey through the annals of human existence.

"Educated: A Memoir" by Tara Westover is a profoundly moving and thought-provoking exploration of one woman's journey from a secluded and restrictive upbringing to the pursuit of knowledge and self-discovery. Westover's memoir offers a poignant and gripping account of her upbringing in a strict and isolated household in rural Idaho, where access to formal education was limited and traditional medical care was eschewed in favor of herbalism.

12 Best Kindle Unlimited Books You Should Read

eBooks for days!

best educational books on kindle unlimited

In case you’ve never heard of Kindle Unlimited, let’s give you a quick rundown. It’s a subscription service , offered by Amazon, through which customers can read as many books as they’d like for a monthly fee. The range of books available is already pretty vast, and it’s always getting bigger, so the chances of finding something that you’d like are high – and as there are many series of books that are exclusive to the platform, you could while away many a happy hour reading your way through them. Here are twelve of the best Kindle Unlimited books the service has to offer, just to give you a taste.

1. Halsey Street – Naima Coster

Halsey Street

A debut novel that was nominated for the Kirkus Prize For Fiction, Halsey Street is the story of a failed artist, Penelope Grand, who moves back home to Brooklyn to look after her elderly father. But the area is being heavily gentrified and, to make matters worse, Penelope’s mother Mirella has gone back to the Dominican Republic.

Penelope settles in as best she can, living with the wealthy Harper family, but when Mirella sends her a postcard that brings up some long-buried issues, the two of them are thrown into the turbulence of trying to fix their relationship and let go of the past.

2. I Thought You Said This Would Work – Ann Garvin

I Thought You Said This Would Work

This novel is brand new and shiny – freshly published as well as new to the Kindle Unlimited platform. It is already boasting some very high ratings, so you should definitely check it out to see what all the fuss is about.

Two former best friends, Samantha and Holly, are asked by a third best friend, Katie – who is suffering from cancer – to embark on a road trip in order to steal Katie’s ex-husband’s camper van. They also have to find Katie’s beloved dog and return him to her. This is a book about second chances and recovering lost friendship – and honestly it sounds like a bit of a riot.

3. Golden Poppies – Laila Ibrahim

Golden Poppies

Laila Ibrahim’s previous novels, Yellow Crocus and Mustard Seed, were bestselling hits, and by all accounts Golden Poppies is easily their equal. This is the sort of book that might not stay on the Kindle Unlimited list for very long, so is well worth checking out right now.

Set in 1894, Golden Poppies follows Jordan, a black teacher in segregated Chicago, and Sadie, the white wife of a businessman in California. Their mothers had a strong bond, all the way back to the plantation on which they met, and when Jordan’s mother is dying, Sadie and her mother make the trip to Chicago. But the journey to coming back together is likely to be filled with the uncomfortable realities of a nation divided by race.

4. A River In Darkness – Masaji Ishikawa (Translated by Risa Kobayashi and Martin Brown)

A River In Darkness

Translated from the original Japanese, A River In Darkness is a powerful memoir about the thirty-six years that Masaji Ishikawa spent living under the North Korean regime. Half Japanese, half Korean, his family moved to the country when he was thirteen years old, and became unwitting members of the lowest social class.

Memoirs about North Korea, and the experience of the people who live there, are still relatively few and far between, but there is a definite fascination about the country; we want to know the truth about the secretive and closed off country. Ishikawa barely escaped from the country with his life, and his repatriation to life in Japan was far from easy either. He’s an honest and frank narrator, and his memoir is so very important.

5. Pachinko – Min Jin Lee

Pachinko

Pachinko is another book that I can’t see being in the Kindle Unlimited catalogue for very long — like all subscription services, some of the very best and most tempting books come and go. But for the time they are there, it’s a great opportunity to check them out. Pachinko was one of the New York Times’ best books of 2017 , the eighty-year story of a family that starts in a small Korean fishing village in 1911.

Sunja, pregnant by married man, is given the chance of a new life in Japan as a minister’s wife. In Japan, she has no friends and she can’t speak the language, but she has been offered the chance to rescue her family from a ruin partly of her making, and so she will make the best of it. So begins a multi-generational saga about the things we do for family and love.

6. Thrall – Roan Parrish and Avon Gale

Thrall

Parrish and Gale are prolific authors, and their solo works can be found on Kindle Unlimited; many of which are delightfully and unapologetically queer. But for my money, the one that radiates pure joy is Thrall, a queer and modern re-telling of Dracula.

Mina and Lucy run a successful true crime podcast out of their New Orleans base. But Lucy’s brother Harker disappears while researching a new dating app, Thrall, and the two of them find that they have a crime of their own to solve. With the help of Arthur, their social media guru, and Professor Van Helsing, they have to race against time to rescue Harker. I am not a fan of Dracula, but I am a fan of this version – it is just so much fun.

7. Paper Girls – Alex Smith

Paper Girls

As I mentioned earlier, the best Kindle Unlimited books boasts a lot of series, in a similar way to how Netflix makes their own shows. One particularly strong genre is crime, so it was only right to pick out a series to recommend. Alex Smith’s DCI Kett series, of which Paper Girls is the first installment, is a great example.

DCI Kett has left London and moved to Norwich with his three young children, to get a fresh start for them all. He’s dragged into a twisty serial kidnapping case, one of the darkest he’s been involved in – and it might even have personal repercussions too. Smith is a very accomplished writer, and his novels just zip by. You’ll probably find you’ve binged the whole series before you even realise it.

8. The Vine Witch – Luanne G Smith

The Vine Witch

The Vine Witch is a gem of a novel; a fairytale for grown-ups, set in turn of the century France. This is also the first of a series, and the following two novels are also on the platform, making for a wonderfully bingeable series.

The vineyards of Château Renard have long produced some of the best wine in the Chanceaux Valley, thanks to the witches who have tended the vines. Elena, a vine witch, was cursed and her magic weakened, but she is back and looking to return to her former life. Except now there is a man running her vineyard, and he doesn’t much believe in magic. Elena has to protect the vineyard, herself and Jean-Paul from whoever it is that cursed her and stole seven years of her life.

9. Bricking It – Nick Spalding

Bricking It

Bricking It is a hilarious story from the always reliably funny Nick Spalding. Humour is a difficult genre to write well, but Spalding always hits the spot – especially if you like snappy dialogue.

In Bricking It, siblings Dan and Hayley inherit a total wreck of a house from their grandmother – a house that nobody knew she even owned. It is literally falling apart, but Dan and Hayley have plans to renovate and sell it on. Easy, right? Except the house is dangerously wobbly at the edges, the money is running out and there is an untrustworthy cow dogging their every step.

To make it worse, the house is going to be featured on a renovation TV show, and the presenter is determined that he’s going to woo Hayley. Maybe it isn’t going to be as simple as they hope to get the work done.

10. Beneath A Scarlet Sky – Mark Sullivan

Beneath A Scarlet Sky

Beneath A Scarlet Sky is a very highly rated read on Kindle Unlimited, and one which is soon to become a film too . Based on a true story, it follows Pino Lella, a young Italian man who joins the underground railroad that is working to get Jewish people out of Axis Italy and safely over the Alps.

He meets and falls in love with Anna, but after an injury he’s recruited to be the driver for Hitler’s right hand man in Italy, General Hans Leyers. Pino spies for the Allies right from the very heart of German High Command, and suffers the hardships of the war knowing that his work is important, and one day he could be with Anna. Beneath A Scarlet Sky is a thriller of epic proportions and one of the best Kindle Unlimited books available.

11. Prognosis: A Memoir Of My Brain – Sarah Vallance

Prognosis

Sarah Vallance suffered a devastatingly traumatic brain injury when she was thrown from a horse, and told less than a week later, by a neurologist, that her IQ had plummeted and the injury offered no hope of recovery.

So begins the searingly honest and devastating memoir about a woman who believed all hope was lost, and isolated herself away from the outside world with only her dogs for company. She was consumed by fear and anger, no longer sure who she was, until given a small spark of hope that perhaps she could make some recovery after all. Invisible disabilities are all too often dismissed, and Vallance forces us to observe and understand the frustration that comes with being so misunderstood – as well as showing us the joy that comes with small wins too.

12. The Dressmaker’s Gift – Fiona Valpy

The Dressmaker's Gift

Valpy is another prolific Kindle Unlimited author, but her focus is on beautifully crafted historical novels. In 1940s, German-occupied Paris, Mireille, Claire and Vivienne are just trying to survive; but Mireille is involved in the resistance, Claire has been seduced by a German officer and Vivienne’s secrets can’t even be shared with her friends. They are loyal to one another, but will the pressure of the war tear them apart?

The Dressmaker’s Gift is the story of three young women stuck in an impossible situation, and of their families, who are trying to unravel the history that came from some difficult decisions the women had to make.

The Best Kindle Unlimited Books

Last week, I shared a crazy good deal on Kindle Unlimited ( click here to see what offer Amazon gives you – it’s usually a few free months or a couple of months for a dollar or two!) and so many of you signed up and then asked . . . “what books on Kindle Unlimited are worth reading?”

Well, here you go!

You don’t need a Kindle to use Kindle Unlimited – the Kindle app is free to download and you can use it on your phone or tablet device. For the record, though, I LOVE my Kindle , and if you’re on the fence, I highly recommend getting one!

(Psst….I did a more complete post a few days ago with details about how Kindle Unlimited works, but for now, basically Kindle Unlimited is like a Netflix subscription – you pay a monthly fee and you as a subscriber have access to everything in the Kindle Unlimited library, but once you cancel your subscription service, you don’t keep any of the books. If you have questions, let me know in the comments so I can answer them all in my post!)

ALSO, I have a whole list of kids books on Kindle Unlimited here :

My favorite Kindle Unlimited Books for Adults

best educational books on kindle unlimited

I also asked for recommendations, so these are books I haven’t read but that many of you recommended and that have great reviews!

Kindle Unlimited Books You Guys Recommended:

And one last thing about Kindle Unlimited Books. Some of them have narration and you can find the whole list of those books here !

Any other suggestions for the best Kindle Unlimited books? I’d love you to make this post even more useful with your favorites!

I keep an Amazon list of the books I want to read through Kindle Unlimited, so adding a ton of these now! I LOVE that they have so many that have narration so I can switch between formats depending on what I’m doing!

If you are a Melina Marchetta fan, her newest book The Place on Dalhousie, is on KU!! It’s so good! Classic Marchetta

Oh, I LOVE her. Downloading that one immediately.

Oh, man, there are so many good books on Kindle Unlimited. These are just some of the recent ones I’ve enjoyed.

The Snow Gypsy by Lindsay Jayne Alford The Bette Davis Club by Jane Lotter Girl on a Wire by Gwenda Bond The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms The Daughters of Palatine Hill by Phyllis T. Smith The Dirty Parts of the Bible by Sam Torode A Pledge of Silence by Flora J. Solomon The Glassblower Trilogy by Petra Durst-Benning The Memory of Us by Camille Di Maio The Woman on the Orient Express by Lindsay Jayne Ashford The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

There are great romance novels on KU. For a long slow burn with not much open door action, check out Marianna Zapata. The books are long but so, so worth it.

I’m in it for the books with narration since most of my reading time is audio in the car. Thanks for including the link to that list.

A daydreamer and a bit of a lost cause, Rey loves stories. Whether they're book shaped or you can see them on a screen, a story always hides in the corners of her mind. She's working on a few stories of her own, always accompanied by her trusty cat.

View All posts by Rey Rowland

A few things before I get into the list. As I mentioned, there are millions of titles available, and if I included every worthwhile read, we’d go back to square one. So, while this list is by no means complete or comprehensive, I picked ten of the best books on Kindle Unlimited 2024 has to offer. In this case, I also decided to skip graphic novels, magazines, and audiobooks because they are another beast entirely. But I did pick both fiction and nonfiction titles so that anyone can find their next great read! Last but not least, the books I picked for this list are a mix of popular and underrated reads — including a BookTok favorite.

Without further ado, let’s look at the best books on Kindle Unlimited 2024 has to offer!

Best Books on Kindle Unlimited 2024: Fiction

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang Book Cover

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

Let’s kick things off with a super popular (and personal favorite) dark fantasy novel! The Poppy War is a military story that is also inspired by real-life events in 20th-century China. The story follows Rin, a young orphan who got into the most prestigious military school in the country of Nikan. This academy is extremely dangerous, and the threat of a new war lurks at every corner. Rin’s best bet? To learn how to use her shamanic powers before it’s too late.

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher book cover

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

Next comes Nettle & Bone , which is T. Kingfisher’s most popular novel! This fantasy/horror mix follows a girl named Marra. She and her sisters have been abused by the prince for years, and Marra knows it’s up to her to rescue them. To gain their freedom and kill the prince, she seeks the help of a powerful gravewitch. But, of course, everything comes with a price. If Marra can complete three quests for the witch, she will finally have the tools she needs to free her family.

Divine Rivals Cover

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Did you know you can read one of BookTok’s most popular reads on KU? That’s right! This fantasy romance is one of the best books you can borrow from the subscription service. Divine Rivals tells the story of Iris Winnow, who wants nothing more than to win the columnist promotion at her newspaper. Her biggest obstacle? The handsome Roman Kitt — her rival at the paper. To make matters more complicated, Iris has been writing these letters to her brother, and when they vanish, they appear in the hands of none other than Roman.

Maame by Jessica George book cover

Maame by Jessica George

Now, let’s take a break from all those fantasy stories with this stunning work of literary fiction. Maame tells the story of Maddie, who finally has the chance to leave her family home and start living her own life. Of course, this comes with tons of ups and downs. So, while Maddie can now experience the joy of getting a flat or the bewilderment that comes with internet dating, she’ll also learn of heartbreak and what it means to put her heart on the line.

cover of The Good House by Tananarive Due, featuring a scary house with a scary tree behind it

The Good House by Tananarive Due

Moving on to a severely underrated horror novel that I cannot wait to read now that it’s available on KU! The Good House is a masterful haunted house story that follows a woman named Angela. She suffered a great loss, and it has taken about two years to let go of her grief. Now, Angela is ready to go back to her family home and look for some answers. Instead, she finds a dark force that has led others to commit unspeakable acts of violence in the neighborhood.

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant book cover

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant

The last fiction book I picked for the list is this tense and atmospheric mystery novel. These Silent Woods is the story of Cooper and his daughter Finch. They have lived in a secluded cabin for the past eight years: no electricity, no family, very little contact with the outside world. But that’s exactly what Cooper wants because it allows him to keep his secrets hidden. One thing leads to another, and this “safe” bubble Cooper has built for them is close to breaking — which will upend their lives forever.

Best Books on Kindle Unlimited 2024: Nonfiction

cover of Cultish by Amanda Montell

Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell

Kicking off the nonfiction part of this list comes Cultish , a fascinating account of how certain people use language in order to manipulate and influence others into joining a specific ideology. Of course, the most clear example of this is cults. But there are other cult-like groups like SoulCycle that use this strategy to get you to do what they want. These are some of the things Amanda Montell tackles in her book, all of which will make you hyper-aware of how language is used.

cover of The Three Mothers

The Three Mothers by Anna Malaika Tubbs

Next, The Three Mothers is an essential biography that sheds light on the lives of three women who should be better known. Their names are Berdis Baldwin, Alberta King, and Louise Little — the mothers of James Baldwin, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcolm X. Their sons are some of the best-known people in history, but very little has been said about the women who raised them. All three of them taught their kids about resistance and to believe in the worth of Black people. More people should recognize the part they played in their sons’ journeys.

Book cover of A River in Darkness by Masaji Ishikawa; a bright red line snaking from top to bottom of page against a dark purple background

A River in Darkness: One Man’s Escape from North Korea by Masaji Ishikawa

Moving onto a memoir that recounts how its author lived and then eventually escaped from North Korea. Originally written in Japanese, A River in Darkness recounts Masaji Ishikawa’s life from the moment his parents took the whole family from Japan to this new Communist country — and the less-than-utopian life they found there. Thirty-six difficult years later, Ishikawa managed to return to Japan and tell his story in this book.

Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay

Last but certainly not least, Roxane Gay’s memoir Hunger is definitely one of the best books on Kindle Unlimited in 2024! In it, Roxane Gay gives an honest and deeply intimate account of her experiences with food, weight, and her self-image to talk about topics like hunger, appearance, and health. Make no mistake, this is an often difficult and certainly thought-provoking read — but also a very necessary one.

Best Kindles

  • Best Overall: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (16GB)
  • Best Budget: Amazon Kindle (16GB)
  • Best Features: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (32GB)
  • Best for Writing: Amazon Kindle Scribe (16GB)
  • Best for Kids: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids (16GB)

What to Consider

When looking at which Kindle to buy, you’ll notice that several features come standard, including a glare-free display, 300 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution, adjustable brightness, Wi-Fi connectivity, and weeks of battery life. Every model also has Audible support for listening to your favorite audiobooks with wireless headphones. However, beyond these features, you’ll find important differences that set each model apart, from screen size to storage and features.

E-books don’t take up much storage space (about 1 to 5 megabytes [MB]), so thousands will fit on your Kindle. Storage options vary by model, including 16GB in the standard Kindle, 32GB in the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, and up to 64GB in the Kindle Scribe. If all you plan to do is read, storage shouldn’t be a major concern. However, if you’re an Audible member and want to download audiobooks, we recommend going with as much storage as you can afford. This gives you ample space for everything you want to listen to and read.

Screen size

Kindles come in three different sizes, and the one you choose depends on your preferences and reading habits. The standard Kindle features a 6-inch display, delivering ultimate portability for those who want a compact device. The Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition come with a slightly larger 6.8-inch display. The small bump, while subtle, strikes a nice balance between screen size and portability. Lastly, the Kindle Scribe features a 10.2-inch display, giving you plenty of room for reading and writing.

Battery life

Every Kindle available has impressive battery life, with each model promising “weeks” of reading time (under specific conditions). For example, the Kindle Scribe lasts up to 12 weeks based on a half hour of reading per day, with wireless off and the light setting at 13. The Kindle Paperwhite has up to 10 weeks of battery life. In other words, battery life shouldn’t be a huge concern no matter which model you choose, though your mileage may vary depending on your usage.

While there are similarities across the Kindle line, the more expensive models offer additional features. For instance, the Kindle Paperwhite features a “flush-front” design, meaning there’s no lip between the screen and bezel. It also includes an adjustable warm light and an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

The Paperwhite Signature Edition enhances the reading experience further with an auto-adjusting light. This feature automatically optimizes the screen brightness based on your surroundings. Both the Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition utilize 17 LEDs to illuminate their displays, providing even lighting across the screen. The standard Kindle doesn’t include any of the mentioned features and only has 4 LEDs.

Meanwhile, the Kindle Scribe's features mirror those of the Paperwhite Signature Edition (sans an IPX8 rating). Plus, it has 35 LEDs due to its larger display and can automatically rotate the page orientation, so there’s no wrong way to hold it while you’re reading. The standout feature of the Scribe is its writing capability for adding handwritten notes to books, drawing pictures, and marking up documents.

Whether you need all these extra features comes down to your personal preferences and budget. Prices range from $84.99 for the standard Kindle up to $369.99 for the Kindle Scribe with the premium pen.

How We Selected

My experience with Kindle devices spans nearly a decade. I purchased my first Kindle in 2014. Since then, I’ve used most models across the Kindle lineup—even the ill-fated Oasis. This has given me valuable insight into how the lineup has evolved over the years and which features are truly worth the extra investment. In addition to my own experiences, I tapped into the insights of experts at Popular Mechanics , who have written extensively about e-ink devices.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (16GB)

Kindle Paperwhite (16GB)

The Amazon Kindle Paperwhite has been my go-to e-reader since 2014, weathering multiple changes of address and keeping me entertained during long flights. It boasts a comfortable paperback-sized design, goes weeks without needing a charge, and can withstand being submerged in water, making it the ideal companion for relaxing on the beach.

The Paperwhite's sharp, responsive screen automatically adjusts its brightness to your surroundings. Around the display are 17 LEDs, so lighting is always consistent, even in the bright afternoon sun. For nighttime reading, an adjustable warm light adds an amber hue to the display, reducing eye strain and blue light exposure. You can set the color to change on a schedule, like during sunrise and sunset, or do it manually in 24 increments.

With 16GB of storage, you have plenty of space for books and audiobooks. And the battery lasts up to 10 weeks before needing to be recharged via USB-C. The Paperwhite also features a sleek design that’s flush across the front of the device. This gives it a more premium look and feel, while making it easier to use and hold. As we mentioned, it’s also waterproof, so it’s safe to use in the bathtub or by the pool.

There’s a reason I continue to use the Paperwhite after all these years. While I would love physical page-turning buttons like in the discontinued Oasis, the Paperwhite offers the best features in a small, lightweight package, making it the best Kindle for all types of readers.

Amazon Kindle (16GB)

Kindle (16GB)

The standard Kindle offers a more pared-down experience compared to the Paperwhite, resulting in a smaller, more affordable device. It features a 6-inch, glare-free display in a package that weighs just 5.56 ounces, for ultra-portability. The Kindle’s screen matches the Paperwhite’s 300 PPI (up from the previous generation’s 167 PPI), with an adjustable brightness, so you can read comfortably in any environment.

Additionally, the Kindle comes with 16GB of storage, enough to keep your entire library at your fingertips. Like the Paperwhite, the Kindle zips through pages quickly and responsively, as well as menus without any stutter.

While the Kindle more than holds its own, there are some trade-offs to consider. It doesn’t have the Paperwhite’s premium flush-front design, making it feel less refined. The Kindle also lacks an adjustable warm light, so you can’t get that nice amber glow when reading at night. It’s also less durable, lacking waterproof protection, which means you’ll have to be cautious about spills and using it around liquids.

Although the Kindle lacks some of the bells and whistles found in the Paperwhite, it still has a crisp display and compact design at a more affordable price point. This makes it an excellent choice for budget-conscious readers who want a quality experience without the premium cost.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (32GB)

Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (32GB)

The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition adds a few key upgrades that elevate it above the standard Paperwhite, including double the storage, wireless charging, and an auto-adjusting front light, making it the definitive Paperwhite experience.

With 32GB of storage, the Signature Edition can hold even more books and audiobooks. If you have a massive library, you’ll appreciate having the extra space. Another perk is its support for wireless charging—a feature that isn’t available in any other Kindle. With a separate charging dock , you can easily replenish the Signature Edition’s battery, while eliminating wires from cluttering your nightstand. It’s a convenient addition that makes the experience feel more modern.

The Signature Edition also automatically adjusts screen brightness based on ambient lighting conditions, ensuring optimal readability, whether you’re reading poolside or under the covers. These smartphone-like features elevate the Signature Edition above the standard Paperwhite, and while they’re not essential, they create a more premium and convenient experience.

Amazon Kindle Scribe (16GB)

Kindle Scribe (16GB)

The Kindle Scribe boasts a large 10.2-inch display—the largest Kindle offered by Amazon. The expansive screen provides ample space for reading and is particularly suited for more detailed comics and graphic novels. The glare-free display can automatically adjust the brightness, with 17 LEDs that keep it evenly lit across the entire surface.

The Scribe’s large display isn’t just for reading; it introduces a new dimension to the Kindle with stylus support. This transforms the device into an e-ink tablet, giving you a paper-like experience to jot down notes, sketch, create to-do lists, annotate in books and documents, and more. Writing on the Scribe feels excellent, with enough resistance to make it feel like writing in an actual notebook. It’s precise, responsive, and remarkably natural, making it a versatile tool for students and professionals.

There are two pens available: a basic pen and a premium pen, the latter of which adds a shortcut button and a dedicated eraser. Both can latch onto the side of the Scribe thanks to built-in magnets. And, thankfully, neither pen needs to be charged, giving you one less thing to worry about.

The combination of reading and writing capabilities makes the Scribe unique in Amazon’s lineup, offering tablet-like features without the distractions. However, it’s not without its drawbacks. The larger design means it’s less portable. And all the features come at a premium—you can get a 10th generation iPad for roughly the same price. That said, the Scribe is an excellent device that bridges the gap between traditional e-readers and more advanced tablets.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids (16GB)

Kindle Paperwhite Kids (16GB)

Smartphones and tablets can be distracting for young users. That’s why the Kindle Paperwhite Kids is such a good device. It eliminates distractions, helping to establish healthy reading habits with access to thousands of kid-friendly books. The battery lasts for up to ten weeks, while its waterproof design protects it from accidental spills. It’s also sold with one of three covers, which feature charming illustrations and provide added protection.

The Paperwhite Kids has a 6.8-inch display that’s clear and crisp, with 17 LEDs for even lighting. Similar to the standard Paperwhite, it features a flush-front design and an adjustable warm light. Every Paperwhite Kids comes with one year of Amazon Kids+, which gives them access to age-appropriate titles. The service includes classic series like Harry Potter , Ramona Quimby , and Diary of a Wimpy Kid , among many others.

Parents set educational goals, manage content, and view reading progress through a Parent Dashboard app. They also can set time limits and create bedtime schedules. For kids who prefer audiobooks, the Paperwhite Kids has Audible support so they can listen via Bluetooth headphones. Amazon also offers the Kindle Kids , a more affordable option based on the standard Kindle model.

1. Winterset Hollow

winterset hollow jonathan edward durham is one of our recommended kindle unlimited fantasy books

Welcome to Barley Day. Eat, drink, and be merry—for tomorrow you will die .

Author: Jonathan Edward Durham

Subgenre: Dark Fantasy

Print Length: 326 pages

Recommended by : Joelene Pynnonen

What it’s about:

When the chance comes up to visit the former home of the late legendary (fictional) writer Edward Addington, Eamon Buckley jumps at it. Passing up the possibility of seeing the island that inspired Addington’s novel Winterset Hollow is impossible. And what better day to go than Barley Day? The one day in the year that all the characters in the book celebrate with their loved ones?

Once Eamon and his closest friends, Caroline and Mark, arrive on Addington Isle they realize that the truth of Edward Addington’s life might be stranger than his fiction. And, too late, they find that coming to the island might have been a mistake—and it might just cost them their lives.

Why you should read it:

Winterset Hollow  by Jonathan Edward Durham is the kind of whirlwind story that spirits you off in one direction and, just as you’re comfortably settling in for the ride, buffets you wildly into a different tale. A mix of quirky, wholesome, and horrific. This novel crosses genres in a way I’ve seldom seen before. And each of the genres is handled superbly.

The horror aspects of the novel are fantastic. The fact that the relationships are built on such solid foundations cements the horror in place. All of the characters are stuck in their trauma: working through it, giving in to it, or just going with the path of least resistance in the hopes of avoiding any more pain. It’s awful and confronting and terrifying because it uses fiction as a mirror of reality.

2. Dio in the Dark

dio in the dark rizwan asad is one of our recommended kindle unlimited fantasy books

A cinematic Toronto adventure depicting the ancient Greek gods as flawed eternal beings living in a moder n world

Author: Rizwan Asad

Subgenre: Mythology

Print Length: 170 pages

Recommended by: Andrea Marks-Joseph

This is the story of a father—Zeus, king of the gods—and the complicated relationship he has with his two sons Dionysus and Apollo. While they’re languishing in the pleasures of contemporary life, mistrust and betrayal burns bright between them. When impending doom hangs over them, the gods are left feeling as though they’re grasping at straws to stop it. They’ve navigated the modern world with mortals for so long that their powers are not as strong.

When Zeus suddenly goes missing, Dio discovers that his father is being held hostage as part of an overwhelming darkness that’s festering because the mortals are forgetting about the gods.  “Zeus was bound not by steel, enchanted or other wise, but by the dismissal of his legend, the failure of the modern scribes to engrave his deeds into the tablets of modern men.”  The gods work to revive the mortals’ knowledge of the pantheon.

Dio encounters various primordial deities and mythological monsters as he embarks on the quest to find and rescue his father—and the entire mortal world. The author (Rizwan Asad) takes this story to The Underworld, secret underground parties, and to the powerful depths of Instagram.

Dio in the Dark  is a delightful reimagined future for Olympian gods. An ode to Greek mythology, this adventure offers something fresh and unique to their stories, and it proves to be an excellent choice for fans of both legends and urban fantasy.

It’s a story as delicious and full-bodied as the ancient Greek wine Dio adores.

While set in modern Toronto,  Dio in the Dark  turns the city radiant with all the possibilities of ancient magic. The visuals are colorful and stylized, with gorgeous landscapes and stunning locations. Asad’s writing is vivid and descriptive—making it impossible not to feel as if you have climbed through a vibrantly drawn storybook, or crept right into the scene in the middle of a cinematic otherworldly battle.

3. Fated Sworn

fated sworn kristin l hamblin is one of our recommended kindle unlimited fantasy books

A royal fantasy adventure with a universe-transcending fated love

Author: Kristin L. Hamblin

Subgenre: Romantasy

Print Length: 527 pages

Fated Sworn  is a story of loyalty and leadership, strategy and sacrifice; of a generous queen and a warm-hearted thief who are fated to find each other and fall in love.

Queen Faelyn— “‘Fae,’ they called her, with pointed ears, limitless magic, and a kingdom regaining its power in the world” — is a badass leader and passionate custodian of her kingdom. Her personal life and her people have faced so much hardship in the past, but by the time we meet her in this book she has successfully built her kingdom into a place where people are genuinely taken care of.

While she’s making plans to marry a prince from a kingdom that will ensure this safety and abundance is secure for another generation, she begins to feel a mystical connection with a mysterious young man.  “The echo of a familiar pain lanced through her, as if she’d been here before, losing him to an unknown future all over again. But none of that made any sense. She’d only just met him.”

Fated Sworn ’s magic systems are fascinating and cinematic, simultaneously intimate and intense. Those with magic in this novel have the ability to sense proximity to each other, to feel the exact emotional state of others, and to manipulate natural elements with magnificent implications. For this reason, the action scenes are especially vivid.

If you’re in the mood for exhilarating combat scenes, entrancing magical training montages, high-powered elemental magic battles, desperate street crime and ruthless gang dynamics—with the shining thread of destined soulmates sparkling throughout—this is the book for you.

This would make an equally sensational, heart-wrenching, sexy TV or film adaptation as both Outlander and Beautiful Creatures series have had, especially with its visually enthralling magic systems.

4. A Moonserpent Tale

a moonserpent tale by rosemarie Montefusco

Danger, adventure, magic, and romance : what else could you want?

Author: Rosemarie Montefusco

Subgenre: Fairy Tale / Romance

Print Length: 354 pages

Recommended by: Kathy L. Brown

A Moonserpent Tale  tracks a young witch, her guide, an elf, and a pigeon on a quest through a barren, peril-fraught land.

Each has their own reasons for heading out on the journey, from Sol’s duty as a soldier to Araina’s mixed bag of grief and low self-esteem.

While delivering some spell books and a magical artifact to a friend at a nearby witch community, Araina’s latent magical ability manifests. She is the best choice for an important mission the coven needs to staff. A militaristic force seeks seven magical artifacts, hidden throughout the land, to wield even greater power. And something is wrong with nature itself, the land and its plants blighted. Are these events connected in some way?

A Moonserpent Tale’s  sweet, slow-burn romance is perfect for these characters in this situation.

The book’s worldbuilding is thorough and thoughtful, and the description is immersive. The voice of the story has a wonderful, folkloric tone perfect for the material.

Readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy fiction such as the fantasy novels of Lois McMaster Bujold will be impressed with  A Moonserpent Tale.  This is a tale both thoughtful and entertaining, a true pleasure to read.

5. The Wolf Esprit

wolf esprit by joseph stone ku fantasy book cover

Captivating historical fantasy in a dark mood

Author: Joseph Stone

Subgenre: Dark Fantasy / Historical

Print Length: 538 pages

Recommended by: Alexandria Ducksworth

Young Esprit Lenoir follows his traveling family of performers around the French countryside. Even though they’re not Romani, they are still frowned upon for their peculiar lifestyle. Esprit does his best as an actor, always seeking his father’s approval, but his sexual orientation marks him as a sinner. His father wants him to as a heterosexual man, while Esprit just wants to be himself, even if locals ridicule him for it.

One day, Esprit spots a handsome gentleman during one of his performances. This encounter leads him to a hidden world of powerful werewolf clans and centuries-old secrets. It will take him across countries, helping him understand the wolf inside him.

Reading  Wolf Esprit  is like reading Anne Rice’s  Interview with a Vampire— but with werewolves. Any werewolf fans (or general paranormal fans) will savor anything in the Lykanos Chronicles ( Criminal Beware , Wolf Omega ), but this is a terrific standalone.

The werewolves in Stone’s book are not the typical ferocious hairy mongrels running the woods attacking innocents at random. Stone’s wolves are smart, sophisticated, and insanely powerful. Just another reason why the author’s world is so intriguing.

Stone has the magical touch with his worldbuilding. I loved traveling with Esprit through rural France and in the lavish masquerade parties in Italy. Stone’s historical knowledge brings the world to life, while the fantasy enthralls.

-Alexandria Ducksworth

dagny by matt leudke book cover

A whirlwind expedition of mystery and discovery

Author: Matt Luedke

Subgenre: Myth / Historical

Print Length: 58 pages

What it’s about :

Left behind to tend their family’s cabin and reindeer as her father and brother are summoned to war, Dagny awakens one morning to find the herd under attack. Using every tool she has available, including Elvish rune magic, she ventures into the dangerous forest to rescue the stolen deer—where she discovers she must confront more intense obstacles than just a monstrous thief.

This fantasy exposes Luedke’s clear ability for robust and creative storytelling in just a few pages. The author has created a new world, somewhere between ours and a fantasy realm, where a lot of our legends and fairy tales come true, like trolls, magic, ghosts, and more. The plot is fast-paced; the story itself isn’t very wordy, but it is immersive and engaging regardless.

If you combined Ready Player One with Dungeons and Dragons , you might get pretty darn close to VEIL Online . This book is a must for adventurous readers who love journeys with dragons, mages, rogues, and trolls.

One thing is for sure: Cressman definitely knows how to write a page-turner. He guides readers through twists and turns, surprises, and constant danger. Like in every good fantasy RPG, there is never a dull moment. Every time Jace succeeds in a quest, a new problem arises. A sizzling love story with a shocking secret

Print Length: 299 pages

Recommended by: Lisa Parker Hayreh, PhD

Kiera is compelled to heal others with her magic despite the threat of punishment if she is discovered. Only the fae may safely possess magic in their lands. But as hard as she tries to escape detection, her magical gifts attract the attention of the young fae prince Dorian.

Instead of punishing Kiera for healing a farmer’s wife, he offers her the chance to hone her magic under his tutelage at his palace in the land of the fae. Kiera is instantly attracted to Dorian despite being suspicious of his motives. Kiera must decide whether or not she can trust Dorian as she embarks on a journey to discover the true potential of her own magic.

As Dorian and Kiera work to strengthen her magical capabilities, their attraction deepens and evolves. Kiera soon discovers that Dorian is harboring secrets that threaten to upend her world. She also discovers that some of her friends and foes are not necessarily who they seem, so she must determine the truth and choose her allegiances to claim the full force of her magic and save her world from the throes of dark magic.

With sizzling sex scenes, a compelling romance, and vivid fantasy elements, E. H. Jahr delivers a delightful debut novel. Strong, outspoken, and intelligent, Kiera is an engaging heroine with an irresistible passion to heal and protect others. In spite of her efforts to blend into everyday life in Cresea, Kiera is propelled into a suspenseful mystery as she encounters the young prince Dorian. His offer to train her in fae magic is alluring, as is the instant chemistry between them.

Vivid descriptions paint the fae world into brilliant detail. Fast-paced action propels us along the twists and turns of Kiera’s adventures in magical training and in romance. Kiera’s evolving passion for Dorian is masterfully spun too. Some scenes, however, do spend some time telling us information rather than offering its usually engaging dialogue and action.

A fantasy novel replete with spilled blood in the name of a peace that every faction defines differently. Gods, judges, kings, mages, gladiators, slaves, all vying for position in a life that demands the deaths of one’s enemies to be achieved.

New Rheynia is on the brink of another civil war. As King Varros stands before his kingdom, Queen Danella plots his assassination should he not heed her request. And somehow, Zephyrus finds himself in the middle of all of this. Having awakened with no memories and the only indications of who he is foretelling opposing paths for him, he is made a pawn in the Prince’s game and enters gladiatorial slavery for his exceptional fighting abilities to be a spy on Laeden’s behalf. To establish his future, he must secure his past, for therein lies the key to his freedom from the arena, and toward his destiny.

It is difficult to overstate the storytelling prowess of author Tim Facciola. As if representative of the balance the title speaks of, his writing rarely finds a scene that is not appropriately captured in tone, pacing, and dialogue. The rich catalogue of characters all have a greater depth than what may initially be perceived, and all have their own mostly sympathetic motivations. Perhaps most noteworthy of all is the vividly illustrative way in which the combat scenes are written.

This book is impressive. Readers of fantasy with a penchant for middle-aged settings will applaud its intricate storytelling and thoughtful worldbuilding.

10. Wizard’s Masquerade

best educational books on kindle unlimited

Dramatic, romantic, and an absolute pleasure to read.

Author: Jay Pellegrin

Subgenre: Sword & Sorcery / Romantasy

Print Length: 550 pages

When we meet Leyna, she’s in the middle of a magical battle that counts for her final exams to graduate school with a wizarding qualification. Working toward a life of stability and independence, Leyna is twenty-two years old, ambitious, hardworking, and aware of the privileges that allowed her to get has far as she has.

She has one major goal:  “As far as she was concerned, so long as her dream of becoming a wizard of His Majesty’s Royal Guard came true, the rest of the world could simply fall away.”

Wizard’s Masquerade  instead leads her to a palace that is plagued by regicide, a monumental conspiracy against the monarchy as well as secret societies who are willing to do anything to further their agendas.

When tragedy strikes the kingdom, Leyna is assigned to investigate the traitorous crimes. Leyna’s investigation takes her on emotional twists and turns relating to who she can and can’t trust and leads her to discover that she doesn’t really know the people she loves.

The magic system that author Jay Pellegrin has built in this novel is fascinating and unique in its approach—familiar enough to understand immediately, but different in a way that feels fresh and necessary.  Wizard’s Masquerade ’s fantasy world features shapeshifting creatures, demon summonings gone wrong, levitation and lifesaving spells, vicious demon attacks, and mysterious magical spies.

The novel has more mystery than romance, though the frequent appearance of suitors and intriguing potential love interests will definitely appeal to romance readers who prefer the pull of a potential fling to carry them through a story.

With thrilling reveals to each new question, even the most clever mystery readers will find themselves surprised and delighted by the plot twists.

Leyna finds love and reunites with family in a novel that creatively connects scenes filled with crushing grief, sheer terror, sexual tension, fierce loyalty and longing.

11. Soulstealer Origins

best educational books on kindle unlimited

A bewitching tale weaving fact and fiction in spellbinding fashion to both horror and delight

Author: Reed Logan Westgate

Subgenre: Historical Fantasy

Print Length: 341 pages

Recommended by : Timothy Thomas

It is the Lord’s year 1303, and the famed holy crusaders known as the Knight’s Templar have fallen from the height of their power. Two knights, Lucious de Montfort and Marcus, lead a company of men into the mountains of Matra, outside the town of Eger, in search of a fabled weapon powerful enough to turn the tide of the war that threatens to consume their holy order.

They find that the weapon they seek, imprisoned in the mountain for centuries, is not an item to be wielded by man, but an instrument of God who is a harbinger of the end of days: the horseman of death. The knights free him from his prison on condition that he aid them in their war.

As they settle into the town of Eger, intent on waiting out the rest of the winter, they quickly learn that the front lines have fallen, the Pope has been killed, and there is no one left they can trust.

Lucious, reportedly in possession of the weapon they found, leaves Eger for Paris to take focus off of Marcus and the horseman, whom they’ve named Oxivius, as they remain in town. With their relationship growing each passing month, and tensions rising in both Eger and Paris, Oxivius and Marcus find their friendship, faith, and destiny are tested as nothing is what it seems.

Soulstealer Origins  is a well-executed blend of history, religious dogma, and fictional elements. It tells a heartfelt story that asserts the humanity of a monster while affirming the monstrousness of humanity.

This book is really well-balanced for all that it contains, and it maintains that balance by keeping its focus on Oxivius and Marcus. Oxivius is an integral part of the plot, but he is fascinating on his own. Having lived, and destined to live, far longer than any of his companions, he has a unique perspective on life and humankind.

Reed Logan Westgate has delivered something truly unique in this novel.

12. The Monsters In Our Shadows

best educational books on kindle unlimited

A hair-raising story about the struggle to accept your monstrous side, lest it consume you

Author: Edward J. Cembal

Subgenre: Horror / Dark Fantasy

Print Length: 398 pages

Recommended by: Jadidsa Perez

Edward J. Cembal’s debut novel,  The Monsters in Our Shadows,  details a dystopian world filled with the “ afflicted: ” humans who have parasitic, amorphous monsters tethered to them.

As time goes on, the monsters—called  “Shivers” —become so malnourished that they devour their human host and anyone around. Humanity is nearly extinct, the last of them all living in the city of Atlas. It’s our protagonist’s job, Anthem, to ensure these Shivers are disposed of day in and day out.

But tensions begin to rise amongst the afflicted and non-afflicted, forcing Anthem to go out and look for a cure for the monsters that have plagued his life.

The Monsters in Our Shadows  is one of the most riveting books I’ve ever read. The book begins in the best, most gut-wrenching way, and it only continues this high threshold. It’s always hard to predict what will happen next, as there is a constant air of mystery and bog.

The pacing moves along swiftly and naturally, and it’s easy to get acquainted with the world of the story. The characters’ ways of life are established well, and somehow, even the concept of Shivers does not feel outlandish.  The Monsters in our Shadows  is able to live up to its hot start because of how much care Cembal utilizes in cultivating this world.

13. The Yawning Gap

best educational books on kindle unlimited

For anybody who loves epic fantasy lore, Vobh serves the perfect dish.

Author: C.V. Vobh

Subgenre: Epic

Print Length: 508 pages

The world outside of Cor Volucre’s homeland is falling apart. The divided lands, called Boundaries, have been using sacred energy as their own. It all stems from the dying Elementals. If they all perish, the world Cor knows, including his beloved home, will cease to exist. Cor gathers a special stone helping him step through Boundary lines, gathering new companions along the way, and coming closer to his goal of saving the world.

The Elementals in Cor’s world are deeply respected gods. The idea of these otherworldly beings dying would cause anyone great distress. The world wouldn’t be much without them. The deeper you dive into this novel, the more you get the chance to truly discover the Elementals, like the “Fossils” they leave behind. Vobh shares so many intricate details that you’ll forget they’re not real.

One of the best traits of  The Yawning Gap  is the developing friendships of Cor, farmer girl Brayleigh, royal orator Celeste, and the famed Knight-Lord Deliad. Each character comes from distinctly different backgrounds, and some even had conflicts with each other. But with the weight of a dying world on their shoulders, they know their friendship can make a greater difference. The companionship closely resembles the bond of the Fellowship from Tolkien’s  The Lord of the Rings . Their bond grows the closer they get to Mt. Doom.

At last, one can’t read an epic fantasy without epic action scenes. Vobh has written so much action that it’ll keep readers flipping the pages like nobody’s business. There are some parts in  The Yawning Gap  where everything gets weighed down and a tad slow though, too. The prose can get repetitive in these moments. As soon as your eyes drift from the pages, Vobh has this magic of snapping your attention back to life with swords clashing and magic colliding.

The Yawning Gap  is a fantasy deserving of much attention. Vobh’s world is inspiring and the characters more than memorable.

14. Children of the Night

children of the night zan safra book cover

A dreadfully delightful homage to Gothic classics that offers something entirely of its own

Author: Zan Safra

Subgenre: YA / Gothic / Vampires & Monsters

Print Length: 356 pages

Recommended by : Samantha Hui

Ayanda Draculesti navigates a world of “Naturals” and “Unnaturals,” a world dividing humans from those who have been tested on, mutilated, and reconstructed by alchemists who prey upon helpless children. A common enemy for the Naturals and Unnaturals, however, are the Risen Dead: vampires.

After five centuries of inactivity from these Dead, the cool and calculating vampire Isadora comes to Venice to wreak havoc, feeding on the Naturals and turning the Unnaturals against them. Ayanda’s particular set of skills, similar to those of vampires, may make her the perfect hero to fight against these killing things.

Ayanda does not have to fight this evil herself. The resurfacing of a familiar evil will connect Ayanda with other Unnaturals such as Jette Jekyll, Belle Frankenstein, and Yurei. Each character comes with their own set of skills and abilities as well as their own set of demons they must reconcile with.

While Ayanda is determined to take down the evil that is Isadora and her lackies, the other Unnaturals are hesitant to fight against such a lethal creature. They must also wrangle with the understanding that in fighting against the human-eating vampire, they would also be fighting for these Naturals who have forced an unbearable existence upon the Unnaturals.

Combining science fiction technology with Gothic and grotesque fantasy, this novel feels timeless yet futuristic, an anachronism well-juxtaposed.

For centuries, monsters and Gothic fiction have been utilized as representations of the cultural anxieties that took hold of the populations during the corresponding time periods. Safra has done an excellent job of implementing this storytelling tradition. Times have become more complex and convoluted, requiring more characters to represent a wider array of anxieties and identities that exist in today’s society.

I would highly recommend this book to those with a penchant for steampunk fiction and Gothic tropes. Safra’s storytelling is grotesque and captivating, both repulsing and intriguing us to keep on listening.

15. The Indigo

Reading  The Indigo  will make you question your beliefs on reality altogether.

Author: Heather Siegel

Subgenre: YA / Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Print Length: 284 pages

Recommended by : Alexandria Ducksworth

In  The Indigo,  a teen travels through dimensions to retrieve the soul of her unconscious mother. Despite what her family has concluded, 16-year-old Jett doesn’t believe it is the end of her mother’s life. Jett’s mom has been in the hospital for a long time. The hospital bills have been piling up, and Jett’s aunt Margaret is thinking about pulling the plug.

One night, Jett catches a glimpse of her mother in an alternate dimension, realizing she’s still alive. But how can she bring her back to physical reality? Jett bands together with Quantum club member Farold and dives into the mystical world of the astral realm. Getting into this strange new world is one thing, but battling the dangers waiting for her is another.

The most captivating theme Siegel presents in this book is the idea of astral projection. Astral travelers can go anywhere and do anything they want during their out-of-body experiences until their spiritual cord takes them back to their physical bodies. I love this metaphysical subject since it’s not mentioned often in mainstream fiction.

Author Heather Siegel plays with the idea that there is more to our lives than our three-dimensional reality, something human civilization has pondered since the beginning of time…Highly recommended.

16. The Lord of Long Shadows

lord of long shadows ya fantasy book cover

The perfect storm of  Game of Thrones  meets  Alice in Wonderland .

Author: M. Anderson

Subgenre: YA / Action & Adventure

Print Length: 328 pages

Recommended by : Jaylynn Korrell

20-year old Alex Winters is an orphan and a waitress. She lives in a trailer and does everything she can to live a quiet, reclusive life, but one night, she saves a man from being beaten up. And the next day? She is transported to the sea of a completely new world: Aquillon. There, she starts the first of many battles to survive; in this world, lowly humans are abused, thieved, and treated like pests. In order to free humanity (and herself), she must embark on a journey with a few friends and discover her true role in this life.

The Lord of Long Shadows  is the Young Adult book you’ll wish you had as a kid—but the one you’re happy to return to at any age. With magic, loss, bravery, and epic battles, this first book in the Knights of the Fallen Realm series comes out swinging—and hits.

M. Anderson creates a vivid world in Aquillon, offering a swift reminder to readers of how fun it is to imagine. There are no slow chapters in this novel, and no chapters lacking in absorbing detail. Fascinating animals like upright lions, goat warriors, and imaginative hybrids stand in the way of our main character’s goal and keep the reader enthralled with each next step.

17. The Brothers Dragon

best educational books on kindle unlimited

Two young brothers travel from World War 2 ravaged London to a dangerous world of dragons, pirates, and family secrets.

Author: J.F. Baker

Subgenre: Middle Grade / Dragons

Print Length: 231 pages

Recommended by : Warren Maxwell

Hidden on an island in the Atlantic, dragons, mermen, gargoyles, and witches have maintained a peaceful existence for centuries. When a malevolent force begins threatening this bucolic existence, it falls on Luke and Nick—the youngest members of an ancient, dragon-blooded family—to protect the island.

With Germany’s bombardment of London picking up, and their father away at war, eleven-year-old Luke and seven-year-old Nick are sent west to stay with an uncle they’ve never met. But when they discover strange maps, references to a land called Draksmore, and a tree house built of stone in the forbidden forest they find that their Uncle Bilok’s home is not the haven they had expected. Together, they quickly break their Uncle Bilok’s rules and find themselves in a world where the fantasy’s from Nick’s favorite books are real.

From the very beginning, an electric pace and compassionate understanding of character makes this story utterly captivating. Baker expertly leads Luke and Nick through their journey, delicately matching their burgeoning inner growth with its outward narrative display.

Readers of all ages will be swept up in by the captivating prose, gripping plot, and the easy way that each of Baker’s character appears fully formed and relatable from the start. Each chapter smoothly shades into the next with an almost inexorable sense of fate leading the whole book forwards… Extraordinarily fun and readable.
