Droitwich store unwelcome

My husband went to donate to the Droitwich store a mixed bag of goods which included 3 or 4 very new books amongst other things but we wanted to have the bag back as it was reusable and useful. When asking if he could have the bag back he was told “ you can take the whole lot back, we don’t want books” So abrupt and cold. Cannot believe this is the attitude of charity workers. We then took it to RSPCA shop who gladly took the items and we had the bag back. We will donate elsewhere in future.

Horrible manager

My mum and i have both had a few negative experiences in the Holloway Road store My mum has bought items that upon arriving at home were found to be damaged, she went back straight away and had to insist to get a full refund as they were refusing completely. I went in last week and found a lovely pair of trousers from M&S, i was in a rush and had no time to try them on. I asked one lady if i could buy them and try at home and return if they didn't fit. The Mediterranean woman (possibly the manager) instantly butted in and said no refunds, only exchange that i needed to try in store. Bare in mind at this time i was wearing a pair of trousers i bought in another CRUK that i was told was okay for a full refund. I asked why and she became very argumentative. In the end i left the trousers as i was put off by the very unwelcoming shop clerk.

This refers to the new Superstore in…Torquay

This refers to the new Superstore in Wren Retail Park Torquay. When this opened prices were good. Apparently the Area Sales Manager has insisted all dresses are priced at £5. Initially they varied between £3 and £5. So good choice depending on brand. Now not so. The lady on the till didn’t agree with this policy. But typically staff on the ground who know what sells are railroaded by Management. Also quite a large amount of the stock should be ragged, holey scruffy bobbly jumpers, shoes with little sole. I go there weekly and stock should be moving through if priced right but same old boring rubbish week after week.

Zero support for their charity store…

Zero support for their charity store branches in UK being the first to cease taking donations of dvd and cds, plus computer games and records. Ridiculous. Just after I had dropped them in a lot of cds. Which presumably they threw away afterwards in the trash. They could have sent them all to CEX and got a money back donation on them all just from them to go to the charity. Poor strategy not thought through. Very disappointed. I regularly bought dvds there too!

Cancer charity shop abuse

Cancer research shop on Lord Street, Southport - I had a horrible experience with the manager. I asked the assistant if a Jacket for £9.50 could be bought for £7.50. She asked the manager, who flew into a complete rant that they never reduce their prices under any circumstances - she was so aggressive and rude that another customer came over to me to see if I was alright and to say there was no need for that and it put her off shopping there. I know it's a charity shop. I'm shopping in charity shops because I'm on a pension and can't afford to pay shop prices. Charity should help people both ways especially at this time. When I give items to charity shops, I hope the person buying is also helped by the low price. Charity shops like Cancer research seem to be big business now and have lost their way in helping people. Regardless, I should not have been treated the way I was. Jean

Avoid these con artists

Avoid these con artists, they are misleading the masses, they are bought and paid for by big firms so they will never disclose the truth for example its known BPA can effect breast cancer, have a look at what they say about BPA

The woman should not work with public

Went to donate extremely rare engineering books that my father owned . He lost his life last Christmas through depression. The woman said they would go in the bin . So I took them from there . I explained she needed to be a bit more tactful with her words after what had happened . She didn’t care at all even after I explained the situation . Won’t be going back there again .

I used to go to the Byres Road store every weekend, I am disappointed to know that the store has closed down! I’ll have to travel to either the city centre or Annie’s land for my bargains now - not that I mind! I just hope the lovely pink haired manager is still within the company! She was a delight!

Went in to donate, treated like I was stealing

I went into the Shawlands branch to buy a DVD box set and at the same time donate some games and a wine rack. As soon as I entered, a male staff member told me to wait until he’d served customers, then came over, and asked “Can I ask what’s in the bag?” in a tone as if I was stealing from the shop rather than donating. I was then grilled as to whether the games I was donating were complete. He then pointed to the wine rack and said it was too big to take. I felt like The Accused in court rather than someone supplying their stock for free. I wasn’t expecting a knighthood for my donation, but genuine gratitude rather than suspicion would serve the organisation well. When I got home I found that one of the five DVDs was missing! I phoned the shop to suggest they show as much care over the quality of goods going out as they do over goods being donated, and he got very defensive, saying customers regularly steal from boxes and that he didn’t like my tone! They’ve had their last donation and last purchase from me!

VERY DISAPPOINTED.

I had about 100 pieces of new nappy changing large messenger bags from last year stock that I wanted to donate to THIS charity. I wanted them to pick them up as they were quite heavy - about 20 kg. I was shocked when I was told they only pick up clothes. These baby bags were retailing for about £25 in the shop. This means they rejected approimately £2500. I was rather disappointed by this. I have a shop and usually give away old seasons stock and would have been regularly donating to this charity but for this. A donation is a donation, why make a distinction between bags and shoes. Surely a begger can't be a chooser. I was drawn to this charity becasue an uncle recently died from bone marrow cancer. If they had put on their website what they accept and what they do not I would not have bothered. I have now donated them to another grateful charity.

I bought a very nice coat from C R UK, BUT…

I bought a very nice coat from CR UK (online) and didn't double check the size via the RETAILERS (MANGO) web site, but simply took CR UK's word (and measurements) at face value, that "L" was 48"...mistake, BIG mistake. CANCER RESEARCH measured the PARKER style coat "pit to pit", and came up with 48", so when it arrived and didn't fit? I checked the MANGO site size guide. And CR UK? when told that "L" was in fact a 42", and when asked why they don't refer to COMPANY size guides ?, said "that's the way we do it". Oh well...money on tap, so I guess they don't care how much is wasted in returns/lost sales etc. Oh they did relist/resell it...as a 46".

Thousands of People in Great Yarmouth Invited to Help NHS Trial New Cancer Test

Great Yarmouth has been selected as one of several places across the East of England to take part in the world’s largest trial of a revolutionary new blood test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer before symptoms appear.

People in Great Yarmouth aged 50-77 are being asked to look out for a letter from the NHS inviting them to volunteer for the trial.

Participants, who must not have had a cancer diagnosis or treatment in the last three years, will have a small blood sample taken at a mobile clinic which will be based at Tesco Extra, Pasteur Road, Southtown, Great Yarmouth, NR31 0DW from 4 June 2022 to 25 June 2022. They will be invited back after 12 months, and again at two years, to give further blood samples.

The potentially lifesaving Galleri™ test checks for the earliest signs of cancer in the blood and the NHS-Galleri trial, the first of its kind, aims to recruit 140,000 volunteers nationally, including thousands in Great Yarmouth, to see how well the test works in the NHS.

The trial team are inviting people from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicities to ensure results are relevant for as many different people as possible.

Dr Suzanne Phillips, Clinical Lead Norfolk and Waveney Cancer Transformation Programme , said:

“Most of us are now aware of the benefits of finding cancer earlier when it is easier to treat. By taking part in this trial, the people of Great Yarmouth will be at the forefront of developing a test that has the potential to save lives from cancer in England and around the world. Registering for the trial is easy – just look out for the letter which will show you how to book an appointment online or over the phone.”

The East of England Cancer Alliance is helping to ensure that participants who test positive in this region get the necessary follow-up appointments.

Clinical Director for the East of England North Cancer Alliance, Dr Linda Hunter, said:

“If you receive a letter please consider booking an appointment as soon as you can while the clinic is based in Great Yarmouth.”

The test is a simple blood test that research has shown is particularly effective at finding cancers that are difficult to identify early – such as head and neck, bowel, lung, pancreatic, and throat cancers.

It works by finding chemical changes in fragments of genetic code – cell-free DNA (cfDNA) – that leak from tumours into the bloodstream.

The mobile clinic will move on to other locations in the East of England following its time in Great Yarmouth.

The NHS-Galleri trial is being run by The Cancer Research UK and King’s College London Cancer Prevention Trials Unit in partnership with NHS England and healthcare company, GRAIL, which has developed the Galleri test.

All participants will be advised to continue with their standard NHS screening appointments and to still contact their GP if they notice any new or unusual symptoms.

Sir Harpal Kumar, President of GRAIL Europe, said :

“We’re delighted to partner with the NHS to support the NHS Long Term Plan for earlier cancer diagnosis, and we are eager to bring our technology to people in the UK as quickly as we can. The Galleri test can not only detect a wide range of cancer types but can also predict where the cancer is in the body with a high degree of accuracy. The test is particularly strong at detecting deadly cancers and has a very low rate of false positives.”

Initial results of the study are expected by 2023 and, if successful, NHS England plans to extend the rollout to a further one million people in 2024 and 2025.

The trial is the latest initiative launched by the NHS to meet its Long Term Plan commitment of finding three-quarters of cancers at an early stage by 2028.

Patients whose condition is diagnosed at ‘stage one’ typically have between five and ten times the chance of surviving compared with those found at ‘stage four’.

Great Yarmouth Centre Lead

I oversee the running of the Great Yarmouth Support and Information Centre so that it runs efficiently, whilst offering the best possible support to our service users. I also supervise our team of fantastic Support and Information Officers, volunteers, and service providers.

I had previously heard of Big C but didn’t realise the breadth of support services available, and I think that what Big C offers is fantastic. I love being part of the Big C team!

Support and Information Officer

I support individuals affected by cancer and facilitate the men’s support group in Great Yarmouth.

My interest in humanism and desire to better understand cancer from an individualistic point of view is what attracted me to Big C. Had I known about the free support that Big C offers, when my father was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2012, I like to think I would have dared to walk through that door—because what awaits behind it is not to be feared, but to be delighted in.

Close up of Support Officer Toni

I have a varied role, which includes providing emotional support to service users and carers face to face, by telephone and online. I also assist in facilitating Big C’s invaluable support groups.

I initially saw the amazing work that Big C does first hand as a Meet and Greet volunteer for the charity and it is a cause very close to my heart. Big C provides much needed services for anyone affected by cancer and I am proud to be a small part of providing that support.

Disgusting treatment by a Charity

Ordered a Stand Up 2 Cancer Star Baker Bundle. Money has been taken promptly but now heading towards 3 weeks and no goods received. Apparently lost in transit. Further delivery was to organised and heard nothing since. Happy to take your money but would appear not happy to provide goods. As a regular donator extremely disappointed and now cancelling my direct debit for the monthly donation. Always willing to help charity but not when they are basically stealing the money from you. Utter disgrace and false advertisement. Also contacting Trading Standards to make them aware.

Donations: Get Your Act Together, CR UK!!!

I have nothing but respect for the work Cancer Research UK do, but like many similar charity organisations, there seems to be this strange, often rude and dismissive attitude towards those wishing to donate. I have often left bags out on collection day only to still find them languishing on the doorstep come the end of the day. Recently, I called the number on the bag and left a message to report this pattern. Radio silence ensued despite the promise to return the call. I'm not expecting a thank you written on embossed paper and delivered by a unicorn but a little gratitude would be nice.

I would give it zero if I could

I had trouble buying the stand up for cancer star baker apron, but eventually managed. I ordered in fggo time for a birthday gift. My expectations for the CRUK brand were high as I respected their work. However, this was peroved to be totally missplaced. The 5 to 7 day delivery came an went. No communication at all to let me know. I emailed and was told it was a Royal Mail error and it had happened to many. Looked at the tracking number they eventually send and RM has not had it yet. I called almost 20 days after the order to be told, there is nothing they can do, they have no idea where it is etc, etc. A completed customer service rail crash. Angry and frustrated an dweill NEVER BUY FROM THEM AGAIN. All donations will stop also.

Not a penny more for this charity

I have given a lot of money to Cancer Research over the years, both direct donations, via fundraising and donations to the shops. I took a lot of valuable items to the Bromley store last week including a couple of iPads only to be told by an indignant assistant 'we are NOT taking donations at the moment'. I'd walked a long way with three large and heavy bags so was not best pleased! I get plenty of begging letters from them for fund raising so they could have sent an email to say the shop was not accepting donations or put something on the website. So it's Cancer Research's loss. They have become just another large, arrogant organisation. ***UPDATE*** I was promised a call by one of the 'sales' staff at C/R, but nobody bothered. By the way, the CEO of Cancer Research is paid OVER A QUARTER OF A MILLION. How many people might have lived if that money had been spent on cancer patients, instead of a Fat Cat CEO

I worked at the Falmouth store. I took time off sick due to anxiety and depression due to the nasty manager, the hours I covered for her whilst her bus was so called late or she was ill or just never turned up. She's nasty to the volunteers and nasty to me the way she speaks to people is absolutely shocking, if you knew how this shop was run you wouldn't go there. There all about money don't care about family life and headoffice is the same . Avoid working for this company

Hamza saves the day!

Like many others, I would have given a one star, if not for one member of their team who saved the day. My cousin died a couple of weeks back and for various reasons I was unable to go to the funeral. As a way of marking his passing, I made a donation to CR in his name. I was guaranteed that I would receive an Email acknowledging the donation that day, so I could send it to his wife. Despite that lie, I had to chase the Email up twice. Eventually I got through to Hamza, who agreed that it wasn't acceptable. I'm not sure it was Hamza's job to do so, but he personally compiled an Email and sent it to me within the hour. Over a week later I received the official Email, which of course would have been too late to send. And I think Hamza's wording was better than the official one, which just came across as a Begging letter. CR, unacceptable! Hamza, well done, thank you. I'm not sure I'll bother in future.

Overpriced Charity Shops

I have been to multiple Cancer Research UK charity shops and all of them have insane prices. They sell clothes for the same price you could get them new. Other than that, they stock decent quality items and have shops in good locations.

Expecting contractors to fund their projects

Recruited building services professionals to mange their shops, had works planned and instructed only to be told that they expect contractors to “fund” their projects on “good faith” and they will only have budget in April 2024 (2.5 months from now) to pay the contractors. Totally unreasonable and out of the blue, how such a big charity can operate with poor management is shocking.

Keeping my money

Order a surgical bra and paid £6.99 for next day delivery. Two days later no sign of the bra nor confirmation of despatch. Received an automated email response to my emailed enquiry, saying expect a reply in 5 days. Call up, unhelpful woman … need to talk to despatch department can’t say when she’d have a reply, never mind when I could expect to receive the item I’d paid for. Asked for my order to be cancelled and a full credit, to which she replied it takes 15 days to process a refund. 15 days!!!! That’s not due to bank rules and process. That’s Cancer Research policy. A clear case of Cancer Research wilfully holding onto my money. So, long story short, I’m out of pocket for 15 days. Disgrace and has left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth for what I had previously thought was a wonderful charity and one for whom I have raised funds for over the years. They should be ashamed.

Date of experience : January 26, 2024

Changing shape of charity shops

People go into charity shops to get a bargain. If an item is, for instance, £2.80, why not make it £3 initially instead of asking customer to round up to £3, as directed by Head Office. Also asking people 'if they gift aid' is fine but 'do you pay tax' is not. That is an intrusive question, which I object to being asked. Staff should hand out a leaflet about gift aid for customer to read for themselves. Finally, most of the good quality donations don't reach the shop floor, but, go on eBay. I know Cancer Research has to rely on donations for their income but the shops are beginning to be run like businesses. Targets are expected to be reached.

Worthless charity

Cancer research UK does next to nothing in terms of cancer treatment. Most of the current treatments have not changed in 30 years. The fact remains that more people are dying of cancer than ever before. The CEO earns £240,000 plus per year, so if you like funding hefty salaries then please continue to donate. Having recently lost a family member to cancer, I realised that treatments available are virtually worthless. If you are young enough and fit enough to cope with chemotherapy, then you stand a fighting chance; but if you are old and weak then your chances of surviving cancer are almost zero. 12/4/24. Their latest advert slogan is a joke "Together we are beating cancer". No we are not beating cancer. Cancer now riddles our society. It was hardly heard of in the 60's.

Greed, money making no care for the people

Here goes , im sick and tired of you guys begging on tv its excessive. If you truely cared about people and cancer youd actually look into alternatives You'd look into cannabis Herbs like tumeric You'd look into other routes instead of solely basing it on kemo which is mainly money money money.. while also pumping out multiple side effects. You'd promote a better diet an alkaline diet All of which will help not only cancer coming in the first place but will help reduce if not remove all together!!! Start fighting the government more and You'd get respect far more from far more people.

Visited the Amersham shop today and found the prices extremely high! People go into a charity shop not only to support the charity but to pick up a bargain. Some of the second hand goods were dearer than they would be new. Needless to say I didn’t see anyone buy anything. These high prices aren’t doing the charity any favours. Won’t be returning!!

Disappointed

I recently went to drop off some donations to the Bromsgrove branch, I called first to explain what I had got, I was asked what I was donating, after telling me they were very busy, I eventually got some help to bring the donations inside, and was told ‘we don’t want any more than that’! And was asked again, what was in the bags. I’ve never had this kind of issue before, I felt like taking it elsewhere where it might be a little more appreciated. CRUK has been an important charity for me in the past, I’m hoping that the member of staff was simply having a bad day.

More environmentally sustainable cancer research

The Cancer Research UK logo

25 April 2024

If the UK is to meet its net zero goals, scientific research must change. We take our role in that seriously says Mathew Tata – here he takes us through what we’ll be asking of you and how we’ll help.

It’s becoming ever clearer that biomedical research has a considerable impact on the environment.

For example, just two clinical trials we funded at the Institute of Cancer Research had a collective carbon footprint of over 160 tonnes . And the relationship between the environment and cancer is a two-way street, as the link between air pollution and certain cancers demonstrates .

We’ve heard the calls for the research system to be more environmentally sustainable and it’s clear that funders like us have a key part to play. Change is needed quickly, even if that means altering the way we approach research and reviewing the practices that influence its environmental impact.

That’s why we’re building on our environmental position statement by introducing new requirements for researchers and organisations as part of our new policy on environmental sustainability in research.

We won’t be alone in that regard – with other research funders introducing requirements of their own – and we anticipate evolving requirements as the research system develops new means to become ‘greener’.

And this is just one part of how we’re aiming to reduce our environmental impact as a charity .

What this policy requires from you

From 2026, we’ll require researchers applying to the majority of our funding schemes to hold accreditation demonstrating the environmental sustainability of their laboratories.

Researchers will be able to choose between the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework, known as LEAF , and the My Green Lab certification (both known as “green lab certifications”).

We want the cancer research field to be increasingly sustainable, built upon more efficient research practices and reuse. More sustainable research can be achieved even ‘away from the bench’, through better data sharing that limits other researchers unnecessarily replicating experiments and the environmental impact associated with that duplication of effort.

Although cancer researchers are already engaged in making research more sustainable, many of you will need to make broader changes to practices in the laboratory.

We know this will take time and effort and we don’t expect you to make changes alone. That’s why we will require institutions hosting our funded researchers to develop a broad strategy for sustainability in research and join us in signing the Environmental Sustainability Concordat by 2026. That means supporting you with some of the bigger changes needed for greener research, like improving laboratory waste management.

We’ll also be highlighting simple tips and ideas for making your research more sustainable with blogs and events throughout this year and 2025. We’ve updated our cost guidance for grantholders to emphasise how our funding can be used to purchase more sustainable materials and equipment, as well as for travel with a lower carbon footprint.

A combined effort

Reducing the environmental impact of cancer research requires everyone to contribute – and that includes us. Alongside changes for individual grant applicants, we will require all labs and facilities associated with Cancer Research Horizons and across our four institutes to hold LEAF accreditation by 2026. We’ve also signed the Environmental Sustainability Concordat and will lay out a sustainability strategy of our own.

And as we embark together on a journey towards a leaner, greener cancer research field, we want you to share any challenges you face as you transition to more sustainable research practices and how we might be able to support you – and of course we want to hear from you what you’re doing that is working.

With a little help from our friends…

As we pulled together plans to reduce the environmental impact of our research, naturally we sought guidance from sustainability experts. Here we chat to Martin Farley Associate Director of Environmental Sustainability Programmes for UKRI about the benefits of accreditation and more…

What is a green lab certification?

There’s a lot of different actions research or technical staff to improve the environmental sustainability of their laboratory operations. Having these embedded within a certification is a great way to improve the accessibility and provide recognition for those who take part.

The analogy I often use is health & safety – when we asked laboratories to improve their safety, we didn’t ask them to each invent their own set of rules separately, a standardised approach was developed. Why not do this for sustainability as well?

Ok, so why should scientists become accredited?

The great part here is that there’s often a benefit to everyone. Above all, the environmental sustainability of our research spaces are improved, and carbon emissions are reduced. That’s a win for everyone. Beyond this though, research and technical staff will gain external recognition for sustainability, which is important when many sustainability actions are voluntary. The science itself can benefit also, in that sustainability actions can lead to cost savings, as well as align with good lab practice.

On an individual level, are there things researchers can do – as opposed from their host institutions – to really change things?

There’s a great variety of ways researchers can really change things. They can implement changes within their labs themselves, for e.g. introducing a new form of reuse, or validating a low-carbon material for a protocol. Such actions benefit the environment, but also can inspire others to act. Scientists can also advocate for change, in their own institutions or beyond. The understanding of climate change is thanks to the work of researchers and communicators, and so scientists can advocate the need for action, as well as research and communicate solutions.

How have you seen environmental sustainability change in research over the years?

I’ve been fortunate to have worked for over a decade in working towards more environmentally sustainable research, and it’s really motivating to see the appetite from the research community for solutions regarding environmental sustainability. I suppose this isn’t surprising, in that we have this same community to thank for the science that’s allowed us to understand the challenge of climate change. Beyond individuals though, we’ve seen a groundswell of activity from institutions, funders, and industry as well. We haven’t found all the solutions yet, but we’re getting there.

You helped us with our environmental sustainability policy – how important is it that organisations like CRUK set expectations for researchers in this way?

Funders, like all parties, play a crucial role driving sustainable research. Having a funder like CRUK develop environmental sustainability policy sends a signal to the research community that this is being taken more seriously, and that the system is moving from voluntary individual action to collaborative and standardised approach, which long-term will benefit all. It’s incredibly exciting to be able to support such work, as well as continue to develop it.
