Anupama

I really value the opportunity for engaged scholarship provided by IIM Bangalore, where our research questions matter not only for business but also government and society. To be able to place myself at that intersection as a scholar, to engage with questions facing organizations and society, and to build capabilities to impart that knowledge to future managers in classrooms is exciting to me. I truly believe that the PhD programme at IIM Bangalore will shape us into scholars who will contribute to organizations and society through research.

- Anupama Kondayya, Organizational Behaviour & Human Resource Management area of the Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.) at IIMB.

Careers and Placements

Career opportunities, academic careers.

An academic career is usually the obvious choice for most doctoral students after they complete their thesis. Such a career usually involves a rich life of continuous learning and growth in an intellectually stimulating environment. Most of the fellows from IIM-A who have taken up this route, were absorbed as faculty in some of the top management institutes in India as well as in other countries. The usual track of a professor advances from an assistant professor up to the level of professor of the institute. If an academic chooses they could become a director of an institute. An academic career involves doing research, writing, and publishing; teaching and instruction; coaching and mentoring students; and consulting with industry, business, government, etc. Research is a significant portion of the life of an academician and allows them to gain recognition in their field of study globally. This career choice also enables networks across the world by travelling for conferences where they can present and discuss their current research work. The grooming for publishing top-quality research, presenting at conferences, and training for teaching all starts while the scholar is pursuing the PhD degree at IIM-A.

The institute not only provides the educational mechanisms to encourage such activities but also provides sufficient financial aid and incentives to boost this career option. Another excellent option for an early stage academician is to opt for a post-doctoral position. A postdoc, as it is colloquially known, is a position that can be taken up immediately after the completion of the thesis to strengthen expertise in the techniques of research as well their preferred topic of research. This period allows them to be associated with a professor, an academic or research institute, the industry or even think-tanks that require research on upcoming studies. This is a good option for scholars who want to create networks within top research and academic institutes, contribute to the world through their research and get a few publications. Some PhDs have also looked at opportunities pertaining to managing educational institutes which are beyond the undertaking of teaching & research assignments. And some others have become part of research centres at educational institutes as well as research organisations.

Corporate & Other Careers

Global management consulting firms value the skills of doctoral candidates since they develop exceptional analytical skills as well as have an in-depth knowledge of certain industries. Also, due to the statistical prowess and proficiency of quantitative skills, a number of companies hire doctorates as analysts especially in equity research and financial modelling firms. In addition, several PhDs have joined industry in their management verticals depending on their topic of specialisation such as Marketing, Finance, Strategy, HR etc

Careers in the Public Sector

The areas of research for several Ph.D. graduates traverse the boundaries of the traditional industry set-up. Public policy institutes, Indian and global think-tanks, large research firms, and organisations such as the UN and the World Bank hire doctorates.

The Government of India also absorbs PhDs. Whether it is via the policy route or on account of their in-depth knowledge and expertise in a field, many PhDs find a place in government.

PhD in Management & Fellow Program in Management

Business and Management education has grown rapidly in India. According to AACSB International, a premier global accreditation agency, India has more than 3,000 MBA programs, the highest in the world! Lack of quality faculty is often lamented by education leaders. Further, with the advent of Industry 3.0 Trends and proliferation of IT in business, management thinking and practices are also getting altered significantly. These developments highlight the growing importance of trained researchers and faculty in management domains in India. However little information exists about PhD in Management in India and FPM in India, that are supposed to create researchers and faculty in management disciplines. This special article by MBAUniverse.com shall bridge the gap.

PhD in Management: Highlights

What is PhD in Management? Let’s start by answering the basic question -- What is a PhD in Management course? Well, a PhD in Management course or Doctor of Philosophy in Management is one of the highest academic degrees awarded in the study of management science. The degree was designed primarily for those candidates seeking Academic Research and Teaching Careers at business schools.

IIM Ahmedabad says that its Ph.D. program in Management course prepares students for a career in academia or research positions in industry. IIM Bangalore says its PhD in Management course is committed to training individuals to excel in their chosen areas of research and produce publication-quality work of international standards. The PhD in Management Program of IIM Calcutta was started in 1971. The Programme aims to prepare students for careers in teaching and research in management studies and in related disciplines, and for careers in the government, in industry, and in other organizations that require advanced analytical and research capabilities.

What is FPM? As per the education regulatory system in India, only a UGC recognized University or an ‘institution of national importance’ can offer a PhD program. Since IIMs, till passing of IIM Act in 2017, were not authorised to offer PhD in Management, they offered a ‘Fellow Programme in Management’ or FPM. In line with Fellow program in Management offered by IIMs, Technical education regulatory body AICTE also allowed PGDM B-schools like XLRI, MDI and SPJIMR to offer the FPM in India (Fellow Programme in Management). After passing of IIM Act, today most IIMs offer a PhD in Management in India, while PGDM B-schools continue to offer FPM in India. Public and Private Universities offer a PhD in Management in India.

Above can be explained well through an example. IIM Bangalore, established in 1973, is now incorporated and recognized as an ‘Institution of National Importance’ by an Act of Parliament titled, the Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017. With IIM Act coming into effect, the erstwhile Doctoral Programme – Fellow Programme in Management now leads to the grant of a degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). Prior to this, the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) of the IIM Bangalore, which is now referred to as the Doctoral Programme, was recognized as being equivalent to the Ph.D. degree of a University by the Association of Indian Universities.

XLRI for example offers FPM in India - Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), a full-time, residential doctoral programme offering studies in different fields of management and functional areas. SPJIMR’s Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), is full-time doctoral-level programme “designed to develop high caliber researchers and faculty in various management disciplines.”

PhD Vs FPM in India: What is the difference? In terms of curriculum and content, there is no difference between PhD and FPM in India. However technically they are two separate programs offering different academic titles.

PhD Programme in Management

PSB PhD Scholars

The purpose of a PhD programme is to create faculty and researchers and the Paari School of Business PhD programme does precisely that.

Our PhD programme aims to produce quality researchers that can publish in leading journals worldwide. Towards this end, we offer the best facilities: excellent and well-qualified guides, necessary software, research seminars, generous funding, a rigorous selection of scholars, customised courses, and individual attention. Our faculty regularly publish in ABDC (Australian Business Deans Council) A* and A category (Scopus Q1) publications.

The stipends that we provide are among the best in the country.

Our PhD programme has the following phases: coursework and doing a thesis. Our excellent and friendly faculty work with their students closely on a regular basis. PhD students form their own Doctoral Committees (DCs). The DC comprises the guide, the co-guide (if any), a member from another school in SRM University-AP and two external members drawn from leading B schools across India (IIMs, IITs, Great Lakes Institute of Management and so on). PhD students also assist faculty in their teaching and research. Thus, when they graduate, they are ready to don the robes of an academic and slip seamlessly into their new roles.

All these factors make our PhD programme highly sought after.

SAP Helps Strengthen India’s Supply Chain Through Digital Technologies

SAP Helps Strengthen India’s Supply Chain Through Digital Technologies

  • Unveils a study, in association with Economist Impact , citing technology enablement and sustainability as the top two priorities to help create resilient and sustainable supply chains.

Bengaluru, July 25, 2024 : In recent years, India has solidified its position as an emerging global economic power, thanks to a burgeoning consumer market and demands to de-risk global supply chains. Digital technology is vital to enable efficient, reliable, and sustainable supply chains and is core to India’s ambitions to increase its participation in global value chains from ~40% to ~50%. In line with this, the SAP Sustainability Data Exchange solution is designed to securely exchange standardized sustainability data, including product footprints, along the value chain. The solution allows companies to effectively exchange carbon emissions with their customers to help companies get actionable insights into Scope 3 emissions by moving from averages to actual supplier data.

Commenting on the announcement , Manish Prasad, President & Managing Director, SAP Indian Subcontinent, said, “To propel India as a global manufacturing leader, a robust supply chain and logistics infrastructure is vital. To expedite India’s ambitious vision of being among the top supply chain hubs, it is crucial to integrate technologies like business network platforms and local data centres underpinned by Cloud and AI. At SAP, we are committed to this vision and are working with Indian enterprises, startups, and the wider ecosystem to promote transparent, efficient, and sustainable business value chains.”

As a part of the company’s ongoing efforts to to help enterprises build resilient supply chains, SAP also unveiled a study , in association with Economist Impact exploring how businesses and industries are transforming procurement to meet existing and emerging challenges amid disrupted supply chains, rising costs, and growing uncertainty.

Some of the key trends among businesses indicate:

  • Digitalization – the #1 business priority : Digitalization remains the topmost priority for businesses, aligning with India’s vision to create reliable and efficient global supply chains through the use of digital technologies.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the forefront : Digitalization, as the top priority, is being partly influenced by advances in automation technology, AI, and Gen AI, the top technology trend businesses are looking to implement over the next 12 to 18 months.
  • Procurement’s green thumb : Legislation and compliance requirements around sustainability standards, supply chain transparency, emissions, and resource efficacies, are exerting pressures on businesses, particularly on procurement teams to meet the organization’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

Ashwani Narang, Vice President & Head of Spend Management, SAP India , added, “SAP has been working with customers, partners, and the Indian government for years to support the vision of a ‘Digital India.’ SAP Sustainability Data Exchange, coupled with multiple solutions available  at a local  India-based data center  we announced last year, will help our Indian customers bolster  supply chain resilience, transforming them into intelligent, sustainable, and future-ready businesses.”
