How to use Google’s free transcription tools

You may, however, be better off paying for a third-party app.

speech to text online google

If you’re in an important videoconferencing session and you are getting an infodump that you know you won’t remember, it can be very useful to have a transcription of that session. Video and audio recordings are all well and good, but a text version of your meeting can be a lot easier to search if you’re looking for that one specific bit of data inside of an hour’s worth of conversation.

There are a number of third-party apps out there that provide AI transcribing for recorded audio, such as Rev and Otter.ai . They also offer extra features, such as the ability to simultaneously listen to the audio and watch for places that need correction or to integrate directly with other apps such as Zoom. However, these are subscription services with fees. If free is what you’re looking for, then there are a couple of workarounds that may help — although they do have certain limitations.

Google Docs voice typing

Even longtime users of Google Docs may not be aware of its voice typing tool, which converts speech into text. This can be very handy if you have trouble typing or just find speaking faster or easier than typing. It can also be used as a transcription tool for any video or audio recording you may have. You can even run it during a live videoconference to transcribe the conversation as it happens.

To use voice typing as a transcription tool:

  • Open a new Google Doc
  • Select Tools > Voice typing
  • If the language you’re using is not shown, click on the link above the microphone icon and choose your language
  • When you’re ready to start recording, click on the microphone icon. It will turn bright red and begin transcribing. Note: be careful to click on the microphone icon after you start the audio you want to transcribe. Why? I’ll explain.

Once you’ve started the transcription feature, you cannot leave the Google Docs page, or the feature will automatically shut off. For example, if you’re transcribing a Zoom meeting, and you take a moment to click into your email, you are going to lose everything after that point until you go back to your document and click the microphone again.

In addition, the resulting transcription is — well, to be charitable, less than perfect. If people are speaking clearly, the Google Docs transcription feature does a reasonable job, but any mumbles, asides, or less-than-clear speech can be completely lost. In addition, forget commas, periods, and other niceties — if you want a fully grammatically correct document, you’ll have to fill those in later.

There is, however, an alternative.

Google Live Transcribe

Google’s Live Transcribe is an Android app that transcribes audio to your phone’s screen live as it “hears” it. The app is extraordinarily simple: you install it, load it, and it immediately begins transcribing. Originally built as an accessibility tool for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Live Transcribe will save a transcription for three days. If you want to keep the text for longer than that, you simply copy and paste it into a document.

To test these transcription apps, I ran each while playing a YouTube video of The Verge ’s Dieter Bohn offering his take on the Pixel 4A . As you can see from the screenshots below, while neither will take any prizes for accuracy, Live Transcribe handled the audio feed reasonably better than Docs did. (Although I have to admit that I found the repeated mentions of the “pixel for a” from both apps rather funny.)

You can transcribe audio using Google Docs. It’s free, but not all that accurate.

(Incidentally, I also tried using Gmail’s voice-to-text mode on my mobile phone to get a transcription, but the app kept choking on me about 20 seconds in.)

The verdict? If you only need a transcription of a meeting occasionally and don’t mind a number of errors and only a few periods, commas, and the like, then either might work for you, although I’d lean toward Live Transcribe. Otherwise, check out the third-party transcription services. They may not be free, but they’re more accurate, which very well may be worth it.

How to use speech-to-text in Google Docs

Accessible and easy to use speech-to-text software

How to use speech-to-text in Google Docs

Speech-to-text software has come along way in recent years. We remember even a few years ago when voice typing required strange voices and mouth movements that looked like they belonged in a Saturday Night Live sketch.

Today, however, more and more businesses are incorporating voice typing into their business operations. It can be an easy way to save time and increase the productivity of your employees and can be crucial in making your business accessible to persons with disabilities.

In this article, we explain how to use voice typing software on Google Docs. Although it is not the best speech-to-text software , it is free and easy to use, and will serve many businesses’ purposes.

How to use speech-to-text in Google Docs: Preparation

Google’s speech-to-text software currently only works on the Google Chrome browser. If you already use Chrome, you won’t need much preparation at all, and you won’t have to download or install any additional software or plugins. However, if you don’t have Chrome, you’ll have to download it via this link .

Speech-to-text in Google docs 1

The only other thing you’ll need to do before you can begin using Google’s speech-to-text software is to set up your microphone. Using the in-built microphone on your device will suffice most of the time, as Google’s dictation software has improved significantly in recent years.

However, if you’re planning on dictating a lengthy text, or plan on using Google’s dictation software every day, we’d consider investing in a high-quality microphone. An external microphone will enable Google to interpret your voice more easily and can be placed in an optimal location.

Once you’ve downloaded Chrome and prepared a microphone , you’re ready to go.

Step 1: Open a new Google Docs file

Open Google Chrome on your device and head to the Google Docs website. If you’re not currently logged into your Google account, go ahead and log in now.

After you’ve logged in, create a new Google Doc. For our test, we named it “Speech-to-text in Google Docs - Test”. Ensure you save the article in a location where you’ll be able to access it later (to either edit or delete it).

Speech-to-text in Google docs 2

Step 2: Open the voice typing window

Within this blank document, you should be able to see the menu options at the top of the window. To begin voice typing, click on the Tools menu option and then Voice Typing. You can also open the Voice Typing window by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+S.

Speech-to-text in Google docs 3

Step 3: Grant Google Docs access to the microphone

If you’ve never used Google’s speech-to-text software before, you’ll need to grant the platform access to your microphone. On Google Chrome, this is a simple as clicking “allow” when prompted.

Once you’ve clicked “allow”, the microphone symbol will change to red. Congratulations –you’re now using voice typing!

Speech-to-text in Google docs 4

Step 4: Begin voice typing

With the microphone symbol changed to red, you can now begin speaking in a natural voice and watch as Google transcribes your voice to text. Unlike with older speech-to-text software, there’s no need to speak robotically, or at a comically slow pace. Google’s dictation software is designed to understand natural speech. Our only suggestion is to clearly enunciate lengthier or more complicated words, as these are where the software most often struggles.

Following these four steps alone will enable you to begin voice typing, saving time and energy that could be better spent elsewhere. After playing around with the software, you’ll quickly become comfortable with it and develop your own strategies for accurate and reliable transcription.

Speech-to-text in Google docs 5

However, if you want to take your voice typing to the next level, read on to discover some of Google’s advanced voice commands.

Step 5: Voice commands

Google Docs also features several voice commands that enable you to create professional documents using only your voice. We’ll now explore a few of the most useful commands, but you can find the full list here .

The voice commands you’ll use most often are mostly self-explanatory. Saying the command “period” will insert a period into your document, while saying “bold” or “italic” will change the style of text correspondingly.

Formatting is also simple using commands such as “insert page break”, “insert horizontal line”, or “insert heading”, among many others.

Users can also change the text color by saying “text color (insert color)”.

Developing a mastery of these voice commands enables you to make the most of Google’s speech-to-text software, and ensures you and your employees can work faster and more effectively when voice typing.

Speech-to-text in Google docs 6

Voice typing software has improved dramatically in recent years. In the past, businesses had to invest in expensive dictation software if they wanted a functional voice typing experience. And even then, there were limits on what such software could achieve.

Today, Google’s voice to text software enables businesses to incorporate voice typing into their operations free of charge. The software certainly isn’t the best available, but for most organizations, Google’s voice typing will more than suffice. We think that the extensive list of voice commands make the software appealing for employers and employees alike.

Google Cloud self-paced labs logo

The Speech-to-Text API lets you transcribe audio speech files to text files in over 80 languages.

In this lab you send an audio file to the Speech API for transcription.

What you'll learn

In this lab, you explore the following:

  • Creating a Speech-to-Text API request and calling the API with curl
  • Calling the Speech-to-Text API with audio files in a different language

Before you click the Start Lab button

Read these instructions. Labs are timed and you cannot pause them. The timer, which starts when you click Start Lab , shows how long Google Cloud resources will be made available to you.

This hands-on lab lets you do the lab activities yourself in a real cloud environment, not in a simulation or demo environment. It does so by giving you new, temporary credentials that you use to sign in and access Google Cloud for the duration of the lab.

To complete this lab, you need:

  • Access to a standard internet browser (Chrome browser recommended).
  • Time to complete the lab---remember, once you start, you cannot pause a lab.

How to start your lab and sign in to the Google Cloud console

Click the Start Lab button. If you need to pay for the lab, a pop-up opens for you to select your payment method. On the left is the Lab Details panel with the following:

  • The Open Google Cloud console button
  • Time remaining
  • The temporary credentials that you must use for this lab
  • Other information, if needed, to step through this lab

Click Open Google Cloud console (or right-click and select Open Link in Incognito Window if you are running the Chrome browser).

The lab spins up resources, and then opens another tab that shows the Sign in page.

Tip: Arrange the tabs in separate windows, side-by-side.

If necessary, copy the Username below and paste it into the Sign in dialog.

You can also find the Username in the Lab Details panel.

Click Next .

Copy the Password below and paste it into the Welcome dialog.

You can also find the Password in the Lab Details panel.

Click through the subsequent pages:

  • Accept the terms and conditions.
  • Do not add recovery options or two-factor authentication (because this is a temporary account).
  • Do not sign up for free trials.

After a few moments, the Google Cloud console opens in this tab.

Navigation menu icon

Since you use curl to send a request to the Speech-to-Text API, you need to generate an API key to pass in your request URL.

Navigation menu icon

Click Create credentials and select API key .

Copy and record the key you just generated to use later in this lab.

Click Close .

Click Check my progress to verify the objective.

Now save your key to an environment variable to avoid having to insert the value of your API key in each request.

  • To perform the next steps, connect to the linux-instance provisioned for you via SSH :

Notice the linux-instance VM in the VM instances list. VM details are to the right of the VM name.

  • Click SSH to the right of the linux-instance VM name.

An interactive shell opens. Use this to perform the next operations.

  • In the shell (SSH) run the following, replacing <your_api_key> with the key you just copied:
  • Build your request to the API in a request.json file. Create the request.json file:
  • Open the file using your preferred command line editor ( nano , vim , emacs ) or gcloud and then add the following to your request.json file, using the uri value of the sample raw audio file:
  • Save the file as needed.

The request body has a config and audio object.

In config , you tell the Speech-to-Text API how to process the request:

  • The encoding parameter tells the API which type of audio encoding you're using while the file is being sent to the API. FLAC is the encoding type for .raw files (Learn more about encoding types from the RecognitionConfig reference ).
  • languageCode defaults to English if left out of the request.

There are other parameters you can add to your config object, but encoding is the only required one.

In the audio object, you pass the API the uri of the audio file, which is stored in Cloud Storage for this lab.

Now you're ready to call the Speech-to-Text API!

  • Pass your request body, along with the API key environment variable, to the API with the following curl command (all in one single command line):

Your response is stored in a file named as result.json.

  • To see the contents of file you can use:

The response returned by the curl command look something like this:

The transcript value returns the Speech API's text transcription of your audio file, and the confidence value indicates how sure the API is that it has accurately transcribed your audio.

Notice that you called the syncrecognize method in our request above. The Speech-to-Text API supports both synchronous and asynchronous speech to text transcription.

In this example a complete audio file was used, but you can also use the syncrecognize method to perform streaming speech to text transcription while the user is still speaking.

Are you multilingual? The Speech-to-Text API supports speech to text transcription in over 100 languages!

You can change the language_code parameter in request.json . You can find a list of supported languages in the Language support guide .

Try a French audio file - (for a preview, listen here ).

  • Edit your request.json and change the content to the following:

Call the Speech-to-Text by running the curl command again.

See the results:

You should see the following response:

This is a sentence from a popular French children’s tale by Jean de la Fontaine. If you’ve got audio files in another language, you can try adding them to Cloud Storage and changing the languageCode parameter in your request.

You've performed speech to text transcription with the Speech API. You passed the API the Cloud Storage URI of your audio file and reviewed the alternative of passing a base64 encoded string of your audio content.

How to Use Voice Typing on Google Docs on Mobile and Desktop

speech to text online google

Paurush dabbles around iOS and Mac while his close encounters are with Android and Windows. Before becoming a writer, he produced videos for brands like Mr. Phone and Digit. On weekends, he is a full-time cinephile trying to reduce his never-ending watchlist, often making it longer.

While Google Docs is primarily geared toward drafting formal letters, invites, meeting notes, and table of contents , you can also use it to jot down ideas or as a journal. To that end, Google Docs is quite feature-rich and supports features like Voice Typing which makes penning down thoughts more convenient.

How_to_Use_Voice_Typing_on_Google_Docs_on_Mobile_and_Desktop

The Voice Typing feature eliminates writer’s block by allowing users to jot down rough and unstructured ideas. You don’t have to waste your time thinking of writing perfect sentences – instead, you can just voice your thoughts, scattered as they may be. Here’s how to enable the feature and use it on your mobile and desktop.

Use Voice Typing on Google Docs on Mobile

The Google Docs mobile app lets you manage your documents on the go. The app lets you edit your documents and even save them as PDF files on your iPhone or Android phone. Let us see how you can use the Voice Typing feature with the mobile app.

iPhone users can simply use the Speech-to-Text feature available with the iOS Keyboard to use Google Docs’ Voice Typing feature. Here’s how.

Step 1: Open the Google Docs app and then open a new or previously created document.

Step 2: Tap on the page to bring up the keyboard. Then, tap the Microphone icon at the bottom-right corner.

microphone iphone keyboard google docs

Step 3: Start dictating the words, and Google Docs will convert the speech to text.

If you don’t see the Microphone icon, check if Voice Dictation has been enabled. Here’s how you can go about it.

Step 1: Open the Settings app and then tap on General.

general settings iphone 2

Step 2: Select Keyboard and tap the toggle next to Enable Dictation.

keyboard settings iphone 3

You can also enable Auto-Punctuation and tweak other aspects from the same menu.

auto punctuation keyboard iphone

If Dictation still fails to work, refer to our post for more solutions. Note that the solutions outlined in the guide will apply to all iPhones on all iOS versions.

Step 1: Open Google Docs and select a new or previously created document.

Step 2: Tap on the document area to enable the keyboard. Then tap the Microphone icon.

You can refer to our post if Dictation fails to work on your Android phone .

Use Voice Typing on Google Docs on Desktop

For desktop users, the Voice Typing feature comes built-in with Google Docs. However, it is only available for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge users on Mac and Windows PCs. Here’s how to enable and use it.

Step 1: Open your web browser and go to docs.google.com.

Visit Google Docs

Step 2: Sign in to your account and open a new or existing document.

Step 3: Click on Tools in the top Menu Bar and then select Voice Typing.

voice typing tools google docs

Step 4: Select the Microphone icon on the left side. Your browser will then prompt you to enable microphone access. Tap Allow.

allow mic access voice typing google docs

You can also click the dropdown menu and select your preferred language.

change voice typing language google docs

And voila! You can now start using Voice Dictation on your Mac or Windows PC in Google Docs.

How to Use Punctuation and Formatting Styles With Voice Typing

The best part about voice typing on Google Docs is that you can also dictate and insert punctuation. This saves you the time of manual entry and correction. Once you enable the microphone, you can start voicing commands like “select all”, “bold”, “italics”, and more. There are a plethora of other voice commands available for voice typing. A word of caution, though: your dictated punctuation might not always get translated correctly. So, be patient while using the feature.

Use Microsoft Voice Typing Launcher For Google Docs on Windows 11

Windows 11 has a feature called Voice Typing Launcher (Microsoft Speech Services) that is designed to be used for voice typing. You can activate this feature to use voice typing on Google Docs or any other application. Before following the steps to enable it, make sure that you have installed the latest software update.

Step 1: Open Google Docs on your web browser and sign in to your account.

Step 2: Go to your document and press Windows key + H to enable Microsoft Speech Services.

Step 3: From the popup, click the Microphone icon to start using it.

microsoft speech services windows 11

You can click the Settings icon to make changes, including using a different microphone and enabling automatic punctuation. We tested the same on our end and the service introduced commas and full stops automatically, which is great.

settings microsoft speech services windows 11

You can also refer to our post if Voice Typing is not working on Windows 11 .

Use Dictation on Mac For Voice Typing on Google Docs

You can also use the Dictation feature on Mac to facilitate Voice Typing. It’s a built-in tool that lets you use speech-to-text in Google Docs. All the voice commands for using punctuation will work with this, too. You can refer to our post to learn how to use Dictation on Mac .

Rest Your Fingers

The Voice Typing option on Google Docs is a much-needed respite from endless typing sessions. The feature can also come in clutch when you need to take note of something while juggling other tasks. Let us know if you found this guide useful in the comments below.

  • A Google Cloud project
  • A browser, such as Chrome or Firefox
  • Familiarity using Python

How will you use this tutorial?

How would you rate your experience with python, how would you rate your experience with google cloud services, 2. setup and requirements, self-paced environment setup.

  • Sign-in to the Google Cloud Console and create a new project or reuse an existing one. If you don't already have a Gmail or Google Workspace account, you must create one .

fbef9caa1602edd0.png

  • The Project name is the display name for this project's participants. It is a character string not used by Google APIs. You can always update it.
  • The Project ID is unique across all Google Cloud projects and is immutable (cannot be changed after it has been set). The Cloud Console auto-generates a unique string; usually you don't care what it is. In most codelabs, you'll need to reference your Project ID (typically identified as PROJECT_ID ). If you don't like the generated ID, you might generate another random one. Alternatively, you can try your own, and see if it's available. It can't be changed after this step and remains for the duration of the project.
  • For your information, there is a third value, a Project Number , which some APIs use. Learn more about all three of these values in the documentation .
  • Next, you'll need to enable billing in the Cloud Console to use Cloud resources/APIs. Running through this codelab won't cost much, if anything at all. To shut down resources to avoid incurring billing beyond this tutorial, you can delete the resources you created or delete the project. New Google Cloud users are eligible for the $300 USD Free Trial program.

Start Cloud Shell

While Google Cloud can be operated remotely from your laptop, in this codelab you will be using Cloud Shell , a command line environment running in the Cloud.

Activate Cloud Shell

This virtual machine is loaded with all the development tools needed. It offers a persistent 5 GB home directory and runs in Google Cloud, greatly enhancing network performance and authentication. Much, if not all, of your work in this codelab can be done with a browser.

Once connected to Cloud Shell, you should see that you are authenticated and that the project is set to your project ID.

  • Run the following command in Cloud Shell to confirm that you are authenticated:

Command output

  • Run the following command in Cloud Shell to confirm that the gcloud command knows about your project:

If it is not, you can set it with this command:

3. Environment setup

Before you can begin using the Speech-to-Text API, run the following command in Cloud Shell to enable the API:

You should see something like this:

Now, you can use the Speech-to-Text API!

Navigate to your home directory:

Create a Python virtual environment to isolate the dependencies:

Activate the virtual environment:

Install IPython and the Speech-to-Text API client library:

Now, you're ready to use the Speech-to-Text API client library!

In the next steps, you'll use an interactive Python interpreter called IPython , which you installed in the previous step. Start a session by running ipython in Cloud Shell:

You're ready to make your first request...

4. Transcribe audio files

In this section, you will transcribe an English audio file.

Copy the following code into your IPython session:

Take a moment to study the code and see how it uses the recognize client library method to transcribe an audio file*.* The config parameter indicates how to process the request and the audio parameter specifies the audio data to be recognized.

Send a request:

You should see the following output:

Update the configuration to enable automatic punctuation and send a new request:

In this step, you were able to transcribe an audio file in English, using different parameters, and print out the result. You can read more about transcribing audio files .

5. Get word timestamps

Speech-to-Text can detect time offsets (timestamps) for the transcribed audio. Time offsets show the beginning and end of each spoken word in the supplied audio. A time offset value represents the amount of time that has elapsed from the beginning of the audio, in increments of 100ms.

To transcribe an audio file with word timestamps, update your code by copying the following into your IPython session:

Take a moment to study the code and see how it transcribes an audio file with word timestamps*.* The enable_word_time_offsets parameter tells the API to return the time offsets for each word (see the doc for more details).

In this step, you were able to transcribe an audio file in English with word timestamps and print the result. Read more about getting word timestamps .

6. Transcribe different languages

The Speech-to-Text API recognizes more than 125 languages and variants! You can find a list of supported languages here .

In this section, you will transcribe a French audio file.

To transcribe the French audio file, update your code by copying the following into your IPython session:

In this step, you were able to transcribe a French audio file and print the result. You can read more about the supported languages .

7. Congratulations!

You learned how to use the Speech-to-Text API using Python to perform different kinds of transcription on audio files!

To clean up your development environment, from Cloud Shell:

  • If you're still in your IPython session, go back to the shell: exit
  • Stop using the Python virtual environment: deactivate
  • Delete your virtual environment folder: cd ~ ; rm -rf ./venv-speech

To delete your Google Cloud project, from Cloud Shell:

  • Retrieve your current project ID: PROJECT_ID=$(gcloud config get-value core/project)
  • Make sure this is the project you want to delete: echo $PROJECT_ID
  • Delete the project: gcloud projects delete $PROJECT_ID
  • Test the demo in your browser: https://cloud.google.com/speech-to-text
  • Speech-to-Text documentation: https://cloud.google.com/speech-to-text/docs

How to use google translate to transcribe and translate voice to text.

Translate conversations, speeches, and phrases

Google Translate has many useful features beyond text-to-text translation, one of which is voice-to-text translation. This handy tool can translate and transcribe audio files or live speech in the Google Translate app in seconds offline and online. Voice-to-text translation is available on the desktop and mobile versions of Google Translate. You can use the Android or iOS Google Translate app to access this feature, although thanks to their Tensor chips, only Pixel devices like the Google Pixel 8 Pro have the real-time translation tool, Live Translate.

How voice-to-text translation works on Google Translate

Depending on whether you use the desktop or mobile version of Google Translate, you'll access slightly different voice-to-text translation features. The mobile app can format transcribed audio with punctuation and capital letters, whereas the web app cannot do either.

Voice-to-text translation cannot produce live captions in real time. This feature is called Live Translate on Pixel phones with Tensor chips and Galaxy S24 phones. Live Translate can also automatically translate text that appears on the screen.

What is Galaxy AI, what can it do, and how do I use it?

How to use google translate to convert voice to text on mobile.

This section includes images showing voice-to-text translation on a Pixel phone with the Google Translate app for Android. However, the method is the same for Android or iOS devices.

Tap the download button when selecting a language to translate to or from. Downloading a language means you can translate audio or text when your phone is offline.

How to translate words or short sentences

Follow these steps to translate and transcribe single words or short sentences. Skip to the next section to transcribe longer audio (for example, speeches).

  • Open the Google Translate app .
  • Tap the language on the right to select the language you want to translate to.
  • Tap the microphone button at the bottom of the screen to start recording.

Google Translate automatically stops and transcribes your audio when it detects a break or when you tap the stop button . You can listen to the translated text by tapping the speaker icon underneath.

How to translate longer audio

For longer audio, like speeches or news reports, tell Google Translate to stop recording only when prompted. This means you can put your phone down and leave it while it translates and transcribes the audio.

  • Tap the language on the left to select the language you want to translate from.
  • Speak or play your audio file.
  • Tap the Cog button in the lower-left corner of your screen to switch between original and translated text.

Tap the star button in the upper-right corner of your screen to save the transcript.

Google Translate adds punctuation and capitalizes letters at the beginning of sentences. It also transcribes text in chunks during recording, not after you stop recording, so you can check the translation as the app records.

How to translate conversations

The Google Translate app has a helpful interface for translating conversations. This feature makes it easy to converse in two languages without repeating the steps for translating voice to text.

  • Tap the language above the microphone on the left to select the language you want to translate from.
  • Tap the language above the microphone on the right to select the language you want to translate to.

Tap the cog button in the upper-right corner of the screen to make Google Translate automatically read out translated text.

You can now tap the middle microphone button to automatically switch between speakers or tap the microphone buttons under each language to switch between speakers.

How to access your passwords in Google Chrome

How to use google translate to convert voice to text on a desktop.

The Google Translate web app doesn't have as much functionality for voice-to-text translation as the Android or iOS app, so use the mobile apps. However, you can still use it to transcribe audio and listen to the transcribed text.

  • Go to the Google Translate website on any web browser.
  • Click the drop-down button above the left text box to select the language you want to translate from.
  • Click the microphone button in the left text box.

The Google Translate web app continues transcribing audio until you press stop. It can translate up to 5,000 characters at a time and doesn't fill in breaks with punctuation.

Use Google Translate to translate any audio into text

Whether you're listening to a speech, having a conversation, or don't want to type, Google Translate's voice-to-text tools can help. Improve your language skills with one of the best educational Android apps and minimize your reliance on Google Translate.

Speak directly into the microphone. Speaking directly into the microphone enhances the accuracy of the software. Avoid speaking too far away from the microphone.

Speak in complete sentences. Speaking in complete sentences will help the software better recognize the context of your words.

Can I upload an audio file and get the transcription?

No, this feature is not available.

How do I transcribe an audio (video) file on my PC or from the web?

Playback your file in any player and hit the 'mic' button on the SpeechTexter website to start capturing the speech. For better results select "Stereo Mix" as the default recording device on your browser, if you are accessing SpeechTexter and the file from the same device.

I don't see the "Stereo mix" option (Windows OS)

"Stereo Mix" might be hidden or it's not supported by your system. If you are a Windows user go to 'Control panel' → Hardware and Sound → Sound → 'Recording' tab. Right-click on a blank area in the pane and make sure both "View Disabled Devices" and "View Disconnected Devices" options are checked. If "Stereo Mix" appears, you can enable it by right clicking on it and choosing 'enable'. If "Stereo Mix" hasn't appeared, it means it's not supported by your system. You can try using a third-party program such as "Virtual Audio Cable" or "VB-Audio Virtual Cable" to create a virtual audio device that includes "Stereo Mix" functionality.

How to enable 'Stereo Mix'

How to use the voice commands list?

custom voice commands

The voice commands list allows you to insert the punctuation, some text, or run some preset functions using only your voice. On the first column you enter your voice command. On the second column you enter a punctuation mark or a function. Voice commands are case-sensitive. Available functions: #newparagraph (add a new paragraph), #undo (undo the last change), #redo (redo the last change)

To use the function above make a pause in your speech until all previous dictated speech appears in your note, then say "insert a new paragraph" and wait for the command execution.

Found a mistake in the voice commands list or want to suggest an update? Follow the steps below:

  • Navigate to the voice commands list [↑] on this website.
  • Click on the edit button to update or add new punctuation marks you think other users might find useful in your language.
  • Click on the "Export" button located above the voice commands list to save your list in JSON format to your device.

Next, send us your file as an attachment via email. You can find the email address at the bottom of the page. Feel free to include a brief description of the mistake or the updates you're suggesting in the email body.

Your contribution to the improvement of the services is appreciated.

Can I prevent my custom voice commands from disappearing after closing the browser?

SpeechTexter by default saves your data inside your browser's cache. If your browsers clears the cache your data will be deleted. However, you can export your custom voice commands to your device and import them when you need them by clicking the corresponding buttons above the list. SpeechTexter is using JSON format to store your voice commands. You can create a .txt file in this format on your device and then import it into SpeechTexter. An example of JSON format is shown below:

{ "period": ".", "full stop": ".", "question mark": "?", "new paragraph": "#newparagraph" }

I lost my dictated work after closing the browser.

SpeechTexter doesn't store any text that you dictate. Please use the "autosave" option or click the "download" button (recommended). The "autosave" option will try to store your work inside your browser's cache, where it will remain until you switch the "text autosave" option off, clear the cache manually, or if your browser clears the cache on exit.

Common problems on the Android app

I get the message: 'speech recognition is not available'..

'Google app' from Play store is required for SpeechTexter to work. download [↗]

Where does SpeechTexter store the saved files?

Version 1.5 and above stores the files in the internal memory.

Version 1.4.9 and below stores the files inside the "SpeechTexter" folder at the root directory of your device.

After updating the app from version 1.x.x to version 2.x.x my files have disappeared

As a result of recent updates, the Android operating system has implemented restrictions that prevent users from accessing folders within the Android root directory, including SpeechTexter's folder. However, your old files can still be imported manually by selecting the "import" button within the Speechtexter application.

Voice   Generator

This web app allows you to generate voice audio from text - no login needed, and it's completely free! It uses your browser's built-in voice synthesis technology, and so the voices will differ depending on the browser that you're using. You can download the audio as a file, but note that the downloaded voices may be different to your browser's voices because they are downloaded from an external text-to-speech server. If you don't like the externally-downloaded voice, you can use a recording app on your device to record the "system" or "internal" sound while you're playing the generated voice audio.

Want more voices? You can download the generated audio and then use voicechanger.io to add effects to the voice. For example, you can make the voice sound more robotic, or like a giant ogre, or an evil demon. You can even use it to reverse the generated audio, randomly distort the speed of the voice throughout the audio, add a scary ghost effect, or add an "anonymous hacker" effect to it.

Note: If the list of available text-to-speech voices is small, or all the voices sound the same, then you may need to install text-to-speech voices on your device. Many operating systems (including some versions of Android, for example) only come with one voice by default, and the others need to be downloaded in your device's settings. If you don't know how to install more voices, and you can't find a tutorial online, you can try downloading the audio with the download button instead. As mentioned above, the downloaded audio uses external voices which may be different to your device's local ones.

You're free to use the generated voices for any purpose - no attribution needed. You could use this website as a free voice over generator for narrating your videos in cases where don't want to use your real voice. You can also adjust the pitch of the voice to make it sound younger/older, and you can even adjust the rate/speed of the generated speech, so you can create a fast-talking high-pitched chipmunk voice if you want to.

Note: If you have offline-compatible voices installed on your device (check your system Text-To-Speech settings), then this web app works offline! Find the "add to homescreen" or "install" button in your browser to add a shortcut to this app in your home screen. And note that if you don't have an internet connection, or if for some reason the voice audio download isn't working for you, you can also use a recording app that records your devices "internal" or "system" sound.

Transcribe audio from a video file using Speech-to-Text

This tutorial shows how to transcribe the audio track from a video file using Speech-to-Text.

Audio files can come from many different sources. Audio data can come from a phone (like voicemail) or the soundtrack included in a video file.

Speech-to-Text can use one of several machine learning models to transcribe your audio file, to best match the original source of the audio. You can get better results from your speech transcription by specifying the source of the original audio. This allows Speech-to-Text to process your audio files using a machine learning model trained for data similar to your audio file.

In this document, you use the following billable components of Google Cloud:

  • Speech-to-Text

To generate a cost estimate based on your projected usage, use the pricing calculator . New Google Cloud users might be eligible for a free trial .

Before you begin

This tutorial has several prerequisites:

  • You've set up a Speech-to-Text project in the Google Cloud console.
  • You've set up your environment using Application Default Credentials in the Google Cloud console.
  • You have set up the development environment for your chosen programming language.
  • You've installed the Google Cloud Client Library for your chosen programming language.

Prepare the audio data

Before you can transcribe audio from a video, you must extract the data from the video file. After you've extracted the audio data, you must store it in a Cloud Storage bucket or convert it to base64-encoding.

Extract the audio data

You can use any file conversion tool that handles audio and video files, such as FFmpeg .

Use the code snippet below to convert a video file to an audio file using ffmpeg .

Store or convert the audio data

You can transcribe an audio file stored on your local machine or in a Cloud Storage bucket .

Use the following command to upload your audio file to an existing Cloud Storage bucket using the gsutil tool .

If you use a local file and plan to send a request using the curl tool from the command line, you must convert the audio file to base64-encoded data first.

Use the following command to convert an audio file to a text file.

Send a transcription request

Use the following code to send a transcription request to Speech-to-Text.

Local file request

Refer to the speech:recognize API endpoint for complete details.

To perform synchronous speech recognition, make a POST request and provide the appropriate request body. The following shows an example of a POST request using curl . The example uses the Google Cloud CLI to generate an access token. For instructions on installing the gcloud CLI, see the quickstart .

See the RecognitionConfig reference documentation for more information on configuring the request body.

If the request is successful, the server returns a 200 OK HTTP status code and the response in JSON format:
