The Humanitarian Side of Food Science

If you’re interested in food security, the health and welfare of people who live in some of the poorest regions of the world and would like to go in that direction in your career, hats off to you! It’s challenging to live and work in a different country, where the culture and language may be unfamiliar to you. However, this is also some of the more fulfilling and worthwhile work anyone could want to do, and as the nonprofit section expands, there are more and more opportunities for people to enter this field, and get paid for it.

Let’s look at some examples of the sorts of posts available to food scientists like you.

VSO is advertising their spot for a Food Technologist at the time of writing. This is a six-month position in Kenya, and you’ll need 3-5 years’ experience to be accepted. You’ll also need a degree in food science or food technology, and a post-graduate qualification in either is preferred. A background or interest in NGOs is required and branding experience would be advantageous. You’ll learn how to ride a motorbike before the placement begins. And you’ll be provided with a financial package which includes a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and extensive training before you go.

You’ll be working will Help Self Help Centre’s Marketing and Value Chain Development Manager to build relationships with suppliers and customers, ensuring products are profitable, by: supporting safe and efficient development, modification and the manufacture of food products and processes using staff training and the implementation of a production line; scout for market to target; improve methods of quality control, source raw materials; plus other related tasks.

There are a wide range of organizations that work with food security exclusively. The Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition Foundation is a private non-profit and apolitical institution that produces valuable scientific content which can be used in inform and help people make conscious choices about food and nutrition and health and sustainability. Contact them at braillacfn.com to learn how you can get involved.

The Center for Food Safety is another powerful organization and nonprofit that works to protect human health and the environment by curbing the use of harmful food production technologies and promoting organic and other forms of sustainable agriculture. At the time of writing, they are seeking to find a Research & Administrative Intern based in Washington, D.C., to join the small but diverse team working on policy, litigation and advocacy campaigns. In this post, you would be supervised by the Operations Director and would work with the Executive Director, Policy Analysts, Program Directors and the Legal Team. You should be prepared to manage several tasks and responsibilities simultaneously as well as perform research, and write and edit CFS materials. You only need a Bachelor’s Degree, a strong interest in sustainable agriculture and food, organics and the negative aspects of the industrial food system. Check out centerforfoodsafety.org for more information on this or other posts.

If you’re going to work in a humanitarian job, you don’t have to study a straight Food Science or Technology master’s degree if you don’t want to. You could, and if that’s what you’d like to do, great. Go for it! However, there are a lot of fascinating programs out there that you could consider.

The M.Sc. in Food Security at the University of Warwick, UK, draws together critical components such as the contribution of climate change, biodiversity, water, soil, land use, labor, nutrition transition and urbanization with food security.

This two-year, full-time course includes modules on: Crop Physiology and Production; Advances in Crop Protection; Soil, Water and Mineral Nutrition; Environmental Accounting and Ecosystems Services; The Global Food System; Organic and Low Input Systems; Challenges of Global Food Security and a Project/Work Placement, among a number of other compulsory and optional modules. Tuition fees are just under 19,700 GBP.

If you’ve always wondered what living in the rolling hills of Wales is like, what about the M.Sc. in Food, Space and Society? This course is specifically aimed at students who wish to gain expertise in contemporary food geographies, and includes the study of the theoretical debates surrounding food at different spatial scales, as well as justice and sustainability and the scope for applying cutting-edge policy and practical solutions to the challenges that face the increasingly complex food system.

The M.Sc. in Sustainability in Agriculture, Food Production and Food Technology in the Danube Region (and the multicultural European region in general) is of interest to you, and you like to travel, the BOKU University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria is the host of this master’s program. You’ll actually have to travel and study at at least three different universities!

Once you’re done with this program, you’ll have a deep knowledge of agriculture and food production and the sustainability of the Danube Region, have the capability to select and apply adequate methods for sustainability in agriculture, food production and food technology. You’ll have studied Food Safety and Consumer Science; Biotechnology; Sustainable Energy Systems; plus many other modules. Get in touch with the institution for more information on the cost of this two-year course.

Ghent University in Belgium offers a M.Sc. in Nutrition and Rural Development: Human Nutrition. There are a range of different elective courses to choose from, but the common part of the program consists of the study of production, transformation, preservation, marketing and the consumption of food products. The practical component of the program involves identifying problems using quantitative and qualitative research methods and analytical techniques and how to plan, execute and evaluate the appropriate interventions.

Choosing a master’s program can be overwhelming. But we’re sure that there are a few you’ve been looking at that just seems to jump out at you. Every master’s course has something to offer, and you can often take your research in a unique direction that interests you personally. If you’ve nailed down a few courses and need help with the final push of writing your personal statement, shoot us an email! We’ll be happy to provide you with a statement that’s based on decades of academic experience.

I want to Help with your Personal Statement of Purpose for Graduate School in Food Science, Masters, PHD.

personal statement for food science

We are especially concerned with the fact that about 780 million people in developing countries still do not have access to enough food to meet their basic daily needs for nutritional well-being. Food systems in developing countries are seldom well organized and developed as in the industrialized world. Moreover, problems of growing population, urbanization, lack of resources to deal with pre- and post- harvest losses in food, and problems of environmental and food hygiene mean that food systems in developing countries continue to be stressed, adversely affecting quality and safety of food supplies. People in developing countries are therefore exposed to a wide range of potential food quality and safety risks.

Search by Degree, Field, or Country of Origin

I am especially interested in contemporary ethical issues of food, agricultural and life sciences, and particularly policy making in these areas. I have had the privilege of working on behalf of members of professional organisations focusing on food and agriculture such as  the European Society for Agriculture and Food Ethics, the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society (USA), and the European Federation of Biotechnology.

Building a Culture of Food Safety

I have read several systematic treatments of many important philosophical and ethical aspects of food (consumption and production). May we eat just anything? Can we do everything with animals, even genetic modification? If not, how can we regulate those processes so that they lead to optimum animal welfare while at the same time producing optimum taste? The production of food also causes environmental pollution – does the fight against hunger have priority over the care of the environment? The care of the environment, animal welfare, and the quality of food should be in a certain harmony, but that is far from granted and hardly easy to achieve. These factors are often in conflict with each other, and a balance will thus need to be searched for.

Other factors to take into consideration are the issue of global famine, the care for a farming class that is able to keep its head above water in a decent way, and a fair trade system that does not throw up unnecessary barriers for newcomers or small market participants and that promotes good nutrition. Famine continues to be a widespread phenomenon that violates human rights, causing nearly a billion people to suffer from hunger or malnutrition. At the same time, deliberate hunger, abundance, and obesity are prevalent in the Western world. Both issues refer to the social and cultural aspects of food. Scientific and technological developments like genetic modification and functional food also play an increasingly important role; almost every bite that we take is determined by scientific developments.

An extra difficulty is that scientific information is often contradictory, or that it relies on statistical probabilities that are difficult to translate into everyday certitudes. All of these factors deserve attention, but it is the mix that is most important.

How do you write a Food Science statement of purpose?

This is an example how you can write statement of purpose for food science:

Being in school, I clearly remember I was asked one question very frequently by my teachers. The question was, ‘where do you see yourself in 20 years, every time my teachers asked this question, I was left with no answer, not because I was hesitant but because I didn’t know the answer. Whenever I tried finding the answer to this question, all I got left with was a dilemma of various fields I wanted to go into. However, with time, I developed a very diverse interest. My interests were in almost all the subjects of my school. Due to this, I end up choosing socio-economical and technical issues together in my high school. However, this didn’t affect my grades negatively. I made myself consistent in the top rankers of my school. I used to score grades mostly 9+ out of 10. When I got to my intermediate, I again had to choose my primary subject. Throughout high school, I had figured out that my inclination was towards biology. So, I choose biology as my major in my intermediate. During my intermediate also, I scored significant grades and secured the second rank in my school.

After completing my schooling, I had come to a point where I had to take a very major decision. This decision was about choosing a good college for my bachelors and the subject I wanted to major in. I gave my entrances and scored in the top 5% of the total number of candidates who appeared in the entrance exam. As a result of this performance, I got an opportunity to study in one of the most prestigious colleges in India. The subject I chose for my bachelors was food technology. My fascination with this domain was felt since my intermediate schooling. This fascination helped me choose food technology as my primary subject to complete my bachelor into. The subject fascinated me due to its rich diversity and broad education in life sciences and the respective industry’s stronghold. In my bachelor’s, I used to participate in various co-curricular activities like sports, research, organizing different events, etc.

Throughout my bachelors, one thing which kept me captivated was subjects and projects I got a chance to learn and work on related to innovation and new products. When I reached the last year of my college, I got an internship at Unilever. While completing my internship, I figured out that innovation changes and processes fascinated me the most. Witnessing novel technologies and systems with the potential to positively alter and advance the world is something that never stopped me from getting amazed.

personal statement for food science

I worked on several industry-related projects. The most recent one was related to the development of a micronutrient-rich drink. This drink was being developed for the elementary schools in The Netherlands. In terms of social implementation, this project holds a lot of potentials and several scopes of development. In this project, I was assigned the role of project manager, and in return, I got to enhance my horizon of knowledge. From the beginning of the project, I was responsible for project management, internal and external communication, managing of resources etc. once the project got on the verge of completion, we could see its positive results. The end was very positive and positively received by the industry partner and the PFT academic staff.

However, all these years, one constant thing is the question, ‘where do you see yourself in 20 years.’ But one thing that has been changed is that now I have the answer to this question. Now whenever someone asks me this question, I reply by saying that I see myself involved in managing various complex projects in food technology and the food industry. In addition to this, I will also be investigating the potential of the market revolving around the domain by new products and technologies.

I have a firm hold in the domain of life sciences because of my concrete academic background. This is one of the primary reasons I have decided to pursue my graduate degree in food technology. I have decided to pursue my graduate degree in food technology from your esteemed university with thorough research. This is because of the rich culture and successful background your prestigious university holds in food technology. With the students’ environment, diversity, and excellent infrastructure, I am sure I will be able to pursue my master in the best way from your university. I am also confident that all knowledge and experience I have gained throughout my academic years will be contributing a significant role to the domain, society, and the university.

Kindly consider my candidature for the applied course. I am looking forward to a beautiful association of mine with your prestigious university.

Sample 1st Paragraph Food Science Masters, Indian Applicant

personal statement for food science

I am convinced that my academic record, research experience and genuine passion for this specialty equip me both to add value to the program and ultimately to assist in successful projects that will change many lives.

Statements of Excellence for Admission to Graduate School in Food Science

personal statement for food science

I am especially interested in contemporary ethical issues of food, agricultural and life sciences, and particularly policy making in these areas. I have had the privilege of working on behalf of members of professional organisations focusing on food and agriculture such as  the European Society for Agriculture and Food Ethics, the Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society (USA), and the European Federation of Biotechnology.

I particularly enjoy engaging with the issue of global famine, the care for a farming class that is able to keep its head above water in a decent way, and a fair trade system that does not throw up unnecessary barriers for newcomers or small market participants and that promotes good nutrition.

Building a culture of food safety.

I have read several systematic treatments of philosophical and ethical aspects of food (consumption and production).

An extra difficulty is that scientific information is often contradictory, or that it relies on statistical probabilities that are difficult to translate into everyday certitudes. All of these factors deserve attention, but it is the mix that is most important.

You are what you eat

Expectation vs Reality of Studying Food Science

The Heroines of Food Science

There are some really inspiration women in the field of food science, but they aren´t celebrated as much as we would like. Michele Perchonok, for example, oversees food science research at NASA, and works to boost shelf stability to infinity and beyond. And luckily for consumers, the food science research that helps NASA feed astronaut appetites can also have down-to-Earth applications for helping solve food problems both large and small.

Advances in shelf-stable foods designed for longer stints in space have already been put to practical use in pouch packaging for campers and for disaster relief, says food scientist Michele Perchonok, who has run NASA’s Human Research Program Science Management Office in Houston for over twelve months.

“Some of our food was used when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in August 2005,” says Perchonok. She works with NASA’s chief scientist and deputy chief to maintain the integrity of scientific research, including food science and more than a dozen other disciplines.

Perchonok has also managed NASA food science research aimed at enabling astronauts to leave low-Earth orbit, about 300 miles above the planet, and move beyond the International Space Station to the moon, asteroids and Mars.

Food research for NASA’s planned Mars mission in the 2030s is focused on extending shelf life for foods from 18 months to five years. It´s also focused on developing systems to grow vegetables under low gravity so astronauts could supplement their rations and add vitamins and other nutrients to their meals on Mars.

Because longer shelf life is considered essential to feeding astronauts on lengthy space journeys, NASA’s deep space researchers are looking at how food is processed, how it is packaged, how it is formulated and how it is stored.

Two of the newest processes being studied are pressure assisted thermal sterilization (PATS), where food is preheated to a specific temperature and then processed at high pressure, and microwave assisted thermal sterilization (MATS), which can dramatically shorten the time needed to process packaged foods.

Food ingredients also could be encapsulated to make them stable for longer periods of time—even the cold of space could be tapped to extend shelf life, says Perchonok.

“We expect a combination of all these approaches may be required,” she says. “In addition, the approach will be dependent on the food itself. We may use all these options to provide a variety of foods.”

Deep space exploration is also expected to eventually involve astronauts growing crops on their space vehicle or on a planet’s surface. Although this work is not a primary responsibility of the NASA food team, NASA food scientists are part of the research effort, says Perchonok.

“The plants will probably be grown hydroponically,” she says. “[They] will likely be grown in chambers that have controlled temperature, humidity and lighting. NASA has grown small plants [like greens and radishes] on the International Space Station, but only for research purposes—not for food purposes, yet.”

Advances in growing foods for space travelers, such as hydroponics technologies, could potentially help boost crop yields on our own Earth in the future too, she adds.

Perchonok joined the space agency in 2000 to tackle the challenge of developing foods for astronauts. Previously, she spent 16 years creating consumer and cat food products for Quaker Oats and Riviana Foods.

“It was one of few jobs in Houston in which I could use my food science education. But it also is the most unique and fun job a food scientist could have,” she says.

Perchonok has worked in a variety of food areas at NASA, including managing menu development and crew support for the space shuttle and designing food systems for a program to develop rockets and spacecraft to replace the shuttle, and then travel to the moon.

Former fighter pilots dominated NASA’s early culture, says Perchonok. But today, women play an increasingly important and visible role in food science both inside and outside of NASA, she adds.

“I don’t see a lot of attitude differences between men and women in food science today” says Perchonok. “I think that everyone has either been trained or understands enough to say that there are no differences—that women are just as capable to get the job done as men.”

She estimates that 80 percent of the contractors reporting to her in the science management office, including food science and other disciplines, are women.

Traditionally women have been attracted to the food science field because they view it as a more appealing field compared to math, chemistry or physics, says Perchonok.

She hopes that more women will enter the hard sciences in the future. “[Within food science,] I expect that more females will become real influencers in the kinds of food science research or product development or whatever they are doing,” says Perchonok.

Perchonok has the dream job of many scientists. But she didn´t get there through luck. She got there because she´s passionate, hardworking and well educated. Do you also fall into this category? If you´re ready to go, but lack a few important documents like letter of recommendation or a compellingly-written personal statement of purpose, we´d love to help you. Let us know!

Catering and food science personal statement example 2.

I am a Portuguese student looking for self fulfilment and success in life. For that reason I have chosen to apply to the Culinary Arts Management course.

I have decided to study on this area because when I started attending school, I was asked about what I would like to be when I grew up and my answer has been changing ever since: a lawyer, a journalist, a stewardess and more recently a Chef. I have always dreamed of being known for something important, something that would make a difference in everyone’s routine, even if it meant an atypical meal or a box of delicious cookies to cheer someone up. But most of all it had to be something that would also defy my creativity and allow it to be boundless, in order that I would forever feel passionate and enthusiastic about my work. All along culinary arts were present in my life, in myself. I always feel happy while cooking and I constantly feel excited at the prospect of learning more about it!

Today I can finally say for sure that my dream is to be a Chef and since my talent and satisfaction rely more on cooking desserts, I wish to become a Pastry Chef. I often feel motivated by Chefs like Gordon Ramsey, José Avillez, Jamie Oliver, and Pastry Chef Bartolo Valastro, Jr. However, nowadays I aspire much more as I see myself in the future managing a bake shop or a restaurant worthy of rewards resembling the famous Michelin Star.

I have chosen to study abroad because I believe that the English language is one of the most important means of communication in whichever industry and as a result I consider that it is the best option to reach out for national and especially international attention to our projects. Among all of the options offered, London seemed the most fitted to me as I was influenced by the heritage of British English and I was also fascinated by England’s nature: photographs of green parks amaze me and let me longing to go there and visit them someday, given that I not only like to breathe fresh air, but also seek for green places where you spend quality time with family and friends.

Some of my favourite hobbies are cooking desserts, singing and listening to music, reading and playing team sports, even though I enjoy swimming and jogging too. Although I do not practise surf, I embrace all of its advantages in the summer: the village where I live in fills with people from all ages and from all over the world with whom I can communicate, share the Portuguese culture and practise my English, French and German. In addition, I have been in touch with foreign people during my working experiences, whether at a “tapas” bar, a tea house, a restaurant or a hotel, all of them places which allowed me to develop varied professional skills. I have been responsible for diverse tasks including food preparation, plating and serving, as well as hosting the clients.

Regarding school, I have always been a good student. With the help of my parents, who taught me how to study properly, my colleagues and teachers, with whom I worked and cooperated throughout my school years, I managed to be one of the best students in class, which makes me very proud of myself and feel rewarded for my effort. I can definitely see my work being valued and appreciated in my further education, at university. Challenges do not make me back down, nor quit either. I set my goals and I reach them because I do not like regrets. Therefore, I do know how to recognise an opportunity and if one is given to me, I surely will not waste it.

I trust that this course will be the right beginning of my successful career.

Sample Personal Statement for the MSC in Food Science, Indian woman raised in Kuwait, fluent in Arabic and French.

personal statement for food science

I very much appreciate the way that the focus of your program at XXXX dovetails perfectly with my own ambitions for both the short and long term, professionally as well as academically. I am a natural for study at XXXX because I am fluent in French and I adore Montreal. I appreciate the way that McGill ranks near the top of universities worldwide, with unsurpassed faculty, world class laboratories, and a vast alumni network. With my extensive academic background in the life sciences and the laboratory skills that I have developed as a result of a great deal of perseverance and hard work, I feel confident that I will be able to make important contributions at McGill, especially as a result of long hours in the lab and a dogged determination to complete my mission or task at hand, whatever that may be. It would be a profound honor for me to give my all as a research assistant to such distinguished faculty members whose research I so very much admire. I especially look forward to staying active in the alumni network for the balance of my career following my graduation from XXXX. I love all of Canada and particularly Montreal. Thriving on diversity and global perspectives, I am most comfortable where different races and religions live and worship side by side in peace and harmony.  I am particularly well read in the area of Food Safety because it is such a very serious public health concern in one of the world’s most populous country such as India, with a high birth rate, horrible poverty, and vast challenges in the area of sanitation not to mention health care, the gravity of the issues is best taken in the context of the fact that India is projected to overtake China as the world’s most populous nation by mid-century.

Even now, the challenges of feeding a nation with a geographically dispersed population of more than a billion people is mind boggling. Millions of children in India have stunted growth due to poor nutrition and many die. Food scandals have plagued India for decades and health and safety issues have these days become a highly visible public concern. Testing and analytical capacity among India’s official food safety monitoring units is woefully inadequate for the management of a supply system that feeds nearly 1.3 billion people. Food testing laboratories lack adequate equipment and expertise and the country’s food regulatory bodies lack credibility with the domestic public and international communities and investors. This undermines government efforts to protect citizens against food-borne health threats. Child deaths from diarrhea in India are among the highest in the world because not a single city in the country provides clean water that can be consumed from the tap. India is in desperate need of highly qualified and experienced scientists to set out standards and regulate every step of the food supply chain. I wish to be a part of the industry /regulatory body where I can make the most of the expertise that I will gain at XXXX to make a positive impact as a Certified Food Scientist. I see myself in the future serving in a senior supervisory role in a food production company while I continue to do research into food safety and agricultural chemistry. I hope to at some point set up my own food testing laboratory to conduct tests for food companies and government agencies.

I thank you for considering my application to Food Science & Agricultural Chemistry at XXXX.

GMO controversies science vs. public fear:

Achievements That Have Spanned Decades

Some significant achievements of the 20 th  century spanned several decades: enrichment (nutrients lost in processing added back to food) and fortification (addition of nutrients not originally present in foods), and safe canning practices.

Although Nicholas Appert developed the canning process between 1775 and 1810, food scientists have determined the thermal processes needed for the safe canning of specific vegetables within the last 60 years. Safe canning results in commercially sterile products with a long shelf life.

And yet, there have been so many changes this century, too. What will we discover can be done in the next couple of decades? Only people like you will come up with the answers! Let us know if we can help you on your journey through our services because we would really love to.
