Popcorn story is about two youngsters who at first instance start hating each other due to their first impression formed on each other. It all boils down to how the young girl and young guy when stuck in the lift in a shopping mall help each other to come out of the situation and deal with how they cope with the other shocking incidents.

Sameerana (Avika Gor) aspires to be a singer but she fails in her attempts due to a reason. She plans to go on a vacation and for that heads to a shopping mall. In the shopping mall, she comes across youngster Pawan (Sai Ronak), a guitarist who plans to surprise his grandfather. Sameerana and Pavan for some reason start hating each other and as fate would have it, they get stuck up in the lift. Where this leads to and how the young enemies who fight like cat and mouse deal with it and the other twists and turns form the rest of Popcorn.

Popcorn (2023) Movie : Artists Review

Avika Gor after a dream debut with Uyyala Jampala attained stardom in a short span but later failed to replicate the magic. With Popcorn, Avika Gor turned producer showing confidence in the project. Avika Gor tried to carry the film on her shoulder with her performance coming up with subtle expressions. She is ok with her performance.

Sai Ronak is good in funny and emotional scenes. In fact, Avika Gor and Sai Ronak with their performances tried to lift the weak story with their performances. There are no other important characters in the film and this in turn turned out to be the drawback.

Popcorn movie story selected by ad filmmaker Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham is all about two youngsters who for some reason hate each other and get stuck in the lift in a shopping mall and how they deal with the shocking incidents that happen in the aftermath. Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham came up with a story that is suited for either a short film or OTT and this in fact shows that he dared to take huge risk on his debut on the big screen.

The point he selected for the movie is very small and his inexperience got exposed when he tried to turn the entire film revolve around the happenings in the lift for around two hours. Though the film's duration is less, with no real conflict and twists, Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham ended up testing the patience of the viewers with his screenplay and direction. He failed to get the optimum out of the actors Avika Gor and Sai Ronak.

KSR's editing left a lot to be desired. There are many scenes that tested the patience of the viewers but he couldn't be faulted as the story turned out to be weak. Balreddy showed his talent using camera angles and with his cinematography, he beautified the film making it appealing on the screen. He showed his talent by shooting the scenes in the lift in an interesting manner. Sharawan Bharadwaj's songs are soulful and touching. However numerous songs acted as speed breakers. His RR and background music saved the film from slipping into the nadir. Songs and background music turned out to be the saving grace in the film. Production values of Avika Screen Creations and Acharya Creations are decent.

Altogether, Popcorn movie failed to make an impact in any manner on the viewers. The word Popcorn itself excites all as it comes in various tastes and flavors and the title increased expectations with the presence of the talented actor Avika Gor, who also turned the producer. But Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham, a popular ad filmmaker who made his debut as the director failed on all fronts. He failed on the writing front and none of the scenes neither excite nor entertain movie lovers. Except for a few scenes in the climax and a few dialogues, nothing appeals. In fact, everyone showed stars to the viewers with relentless torture. Popcorn story lacks the soul and one can only wonder and pity Avika Gor as to why she turned producer and what appealed to her in the story, except for the title. Maybe she got carried away with the lift concept and the lift instead of lifting her up, slid her down completely. Considering all these points, Cinejosh goes with a 1 Rating for Popcorn .

Popcorn, a limited-budget film starring Avika Gor and Sai Ronak as the lead pair has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: Sameerana( Avika Gor) a girl who has a dream of becoming a singer accidentally crosses paths with a guitarist named Pawan( Sai Ronak) at a shopping mall. Later, the two begin their journey in a shutdown lift as strangers. Though initially, they see each other as enemies due to miscommunication, later they become good friends and eventually start liking each other. What situations make them struck in the lift? How will they come out of the dangerous situation? What is the backstory behind Sameerana’s passion for becoming a singer? To know that, you have to watch the film in the cinemas near you.

Performances: As usual, Avika Gor is cute in her modern girl look. Her acting and the way she carried the role bring weightage to the proceedings to an extent. Especially, her performance during the climax portion brings emotional depth to the film.

On the other hand, Sai Ronak is fine in his role as a guitarist. His performance as a modern-day boy is good. He perfectly fitted into the role that carries multiple emotions. The chemistry between Avika Gor and Sai Ronak is showcased in a decent manner.

As most of the film runs on the lead pair, the film hardly has scope for other artists. The lady who played Avika’s mother role did her part good. Senior artist Charuhasan is okay in his limited role.

Technicalities: The major asset of the film is the music composed by Shravan Bharadwaja. The film has half a dozen montage songs which are literally a saved grace for the audience. His fresh instrumentation brings a fresh vibe to all the songs.

MN Bal Reddy’s work as the cinematographer is visible on screen as he used good frames in the lift to showcase the lead pair nicely. His lighting setup is also impressive. Editing by KSR is okay.

Production values for this limited-budget film by Madhupalli Bhogendra Gupta of Acharya Creations, Avika Screen Creations, MS Chalapathi Raju, and Seshu Babu Peddinti are alright.

Analysis: Written and directed by Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham, Popcorn has a fresh concept that revolves around a boy and a girl who are stuck in a lift. Utilizing the point, Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham has the scope to explore the film in a decent way but totally dilutes the audience’s interest with an abrupt narrative.

His writing is poor and lacks proper character establishment scenes. The screenplay is dull and lacks effectiveness. To summarize, Popcorn has technical padding and good performances from the lead pair but struggles with the boring and uneven presentation.

Verdict: Execution syndrome!

అవికా గోర్ (Avika Gor) నాయికగా నటించిన తాజా సినిమా 'పాప్ కార్న్' (Popcorn Telugu Movie). దీని ప్రత్యేకత ఏంటంటే... నటించడంతో పాటు నిర్మాణంలోనూ అవికా గోర్ పాలు పంచుకున్నారు. ఇందులో సాయి రోనక్ (Sai Ronak) హీరో. ఈ సినిమా నేడు థియేటర్లలో విడుదలైంది. ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందంటే?

కథ (Popcorn Movie Story) : తానొక అతిలోక సుందరి అని సమీరణ (అవికా గోర్) ఫీలింగ్. షాపింగ్ చేసి లిఫ్టు ఎక్కుతుంది. అందులో వచ్చిన పవన్ (సాయి రోనక్) ఆమెకు లాగిపెట్టి ఒక్కటి ఇస్తాడు. ఎందుకు? బాంబ్ బ్లాస్ట్ కావడంతో లిఫ్టులో ఇద్దరూ ఉండిపోవాల్సి వచ్చినప్పుడు ఏం చేశారు? ఒకరి గురించి మరొకరు ఏం తెలుసుకున్నారు? ఆస్తమా వల్ల సమీరణ ప్రాణాలకు ముప్పు ఏర్పడితే పవన్ ఏం చేశాడు? చివరకు ఏమైంది? అనేది సినిమా చూసి తెలుసుకోవాలి. 

విశ్లేషణ : తెలుగులో కాన్సెప్ట్ ఓరియెంటెడ్ సినిమాలు తక్కువ. పైగా, లిఫ్టులో హీరో హీరోయిన్లు చిక్కుకోవడం కాన్సెప్ట్ మీద రాలేదు. 'థాంక్యూ బ్రదర్' సినిమాలో అనసూయ, విరాజ్ అశ్విన్ లిఫ్టులో చిక్కుకున్న అది వేరే కథ. దాంతో 'పాప్ కార్న్' మీద కాస్త అంచనాలు ఏర్పడ్డాయి. విడుదలకు ముందు ప్రమోషన్స్ కూడా బాగా చేశారు. అవికా గోర్ నిర్మాత కావడంతో కొందరు ఆసక్తి చూపించారు. పైగా... పాప్ కార్న్, థియేటర్లను వేరు చేసి చూడలేం. ఇలా బోలెడు కారణాలు ఉన్నాయి ఈ చిన్న సినిమా మీద దృష్టి పడటానికి! మరి, సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది? అంటే... 

'పాప్ కార్న్' థియేటర్లలోకి వెళ్ళిన ప్రేక్షకుల పరిస్థితి రాబోయే రెండు గంటలు ఏ విధంగా ఉంటుందనేది చెప్పడానికి... హీరోయిన్ ఇంట్లో అక్వేరియంలో చేప కింద పడిన సన్నివేశాన్ని ఉదాహరణగా చెప్పవచ్చు. చేప పిల్ల కింద పడితే గ్లాసు నీళ్లు, ఓ పేపర్ తీసుకు రావడానికి తల్లీకూతుళ్లు చేసిన హడావిడి అంతా ఇంతా కాదు. ఆ ఓవర్ యాక్షన్ వర్ణించడానికి మాటలు రావడం లేదు. లిఫ్టులో ఎంటరైన తర్వాత డోర్ మీద సన్నీ లియోన్ కండోమ్ యాడ్ పోస్టర్ ఉంటుంది. దర్శకుడి అభిరుచి ఏంటనేది అక్కడ అయినా సరే అర్థం చేసుకుని... థియేటర్ డోర్ వైపు నడిస్తే బయట పడతాం. లేదంటే హీరో హీరోయిన్లు లిఫ్టులో ఇరుక్కున్నట్లు మనం థియేటర్లలో ఇరుక్కుపోతాం.

హీరో హీరోయిన్లు లిఫ్టులో ఇరుక్కుపోవడమనే కాన్సెప్ట్ బావుంది. కానీ, సరైన సీన్లు ఎక్కడా లేవు. ఇద్దరి మధ్య పరిచయానికి, ప్రేమ కథకు మరొక అంశమే లేనట్టు అడల్ట్ డైపర్ వేశారు డైరెక్టర్. ఆయన క్రియేటివిటీలో అదొక పరాకాష్ట. మాటల్లో చెప్పడం వల్ల కావడం లేదు. మెయిన్ ట్విస్ట్ తీసుకెళ్ళి ఎలుక చేతిలో పెట్టారు. బీసీ కాలం నాటి డైలాగులతో థియేటర్లకు వచ్చిన ప్రేక్షకులపై దాడి చేశారు. షార్ట్ ఫిల్ముకు ఎక్కువ, ఫీచర్ ఫిల్ముకు తక్కువ అన్నట్టు సాగిన ఈ సినిమాలో కాస్తలో కాస్త రిలీఫ్ ఏదైనా ఉందంటే సాంగ్స్. శ్రవణ్ భరద్వాజ్ పాటలు పర్వాలేదు. మెజారిటీ సినిమా లిఫ్టులో సాగడంతో నిర్మాతలు ఉన్నంతలో బాగా తీశారు.  

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారంటే? : సన్నివేశాల్లో కంటెంట్ లేకపోవడం వల్లనో... లేదా క్యారెక్టర్‌తో కనెక్ట్ కాకపోవడం వల్లనో... అవికా గోర్ ఓవర్ యాక్షన్ చేశారు. కొన్ని సీన్లలో ఏం చేయాలో తెలియనట్టు ముఖం పెట్టారు. పతాక సన్నివేశాల్లో తనలో నటిని బయటకు తీసుకొచ్చారు. భావోద్వేగభరిత సన్నివేశంలో చక్కటి నటన కనబరిచారు. సాయి రోనక్ ఓకే. సినిమాలో మ్యాగ్జిమమ్ సీన్లలో వీళ్ళిద్దరూ మాత్రమే కనిపిస్తారు. మిగతా వాళ్ళ పాత్రల నిడివి పరిమితమే.

చివరగా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : ఈ 'పాప్ కార్న్'లో ఉప్పు, కారం, తీపి వంటివి ఏవీ లేవు. పతాక సన్నివేశాల ముందు వరకు ఉన్నది అంతా చేదుగా తగిలే పాత మొక్కజొన్న పలుకులే. ఇది షార్ట్ ఫిల్మ్ కంటే ఎక్కువ, ఫీచర్ ఫిల్మ్ కంటే చాలా చాలా తక్కువ. సినిమా ఎలా ఉన్నా పాప్ కార్న్ డబ్బా కొనుక్కుని థియేటర్లలో కూర్చునే ఓపిక, టైమ్, డబ్బులు ఉన్నవాళ్ళకు మాత్రమే ఈ సినిమా. లేదంటే మీ విలువైన సమయాన్ని వృథా చేసుకోకండి.

Popcorn Movie Review: A decent premise let down by lacklustre writing

Rating: ( 2 / 5).

Popcorn is a mishmash of different genres, which makes it sound so interesting on paper. Ninety percent of the film’s run time is dedicated to two characters stuck in a lift for almost a day, which qualifies Popcorn to be a chamber film, a beloved mode of storytelling in the world of short films. Sameerana (Avika Gor), the film’s female lead, has asthma and does not have an inhaler with her when she is on the lift for hours on end, so Popcorn also fits nicely in the survival film space a la Mathukutty Xavier’s Helen (2019) or Vikramaditya Motwane’s Trapped (2016). And lastly, Popcorn is also a romantic comedy that has its characters talking through the entirety of the film. I was reminded of the first half of Tharun Bhascker’s P elli Choopulu (2016) and the iconic lift scene from Pokiri (2006), where Mahesh Babu and Ileana get to know each other better in the time they get stuck together. These comparisons, sadly go on to show the promise this film probably held in its natal stages, only to fall apart in the process of bringing it alive on the big screen.

Popcorn is set around Sameerana and Pavan (Sai Ronak) who get stuck in the lift of a shopping mall. A bomb blast happens earlier in the day, and while they don’t register its impact to realise what happened, there is some exposition to detail them coming to grips with the situation. With the assumption that all civilians have been cleared out of the premises, the police officers and mall security leave, abandoning these two. Sameerana and Pavan start off on a wrong note even before they enter the mall. An interaction that happens early on in the film, where Pavan wrongly assumes that Sameerana insulted his blind grandfather (Charuhasan), sets off the chain of events, making Pavan ambush Sameera in a lift and slap her with zero preamble. The slap scene is sadly, the first of many such scenes, which make you wonder whether you are in 2023 or 2005. While the scene where Pavan hands Sameerana his grandfather’s adult diapers was dealt sensitively, and with maturity, the interval cliffhanger or the constant references to Sunny Leone (there is a hoarding for manforce condoms on the lift), come off as gratuitous and tacky. 

We are never provided with an explanation behind why the bomb blast takes place. All we get to see is a cleaning lady moving around a penguin-shaped trash can with an explosive hidden in it.  Were fundamentalists involved? Was this blast done for insurance money? Was there a personal agenda afoot? These are questions we never get the answers for. There is also a lingering doubt I had about why the film was titled Popcorn . Sure, the snack makes an appearance but that does little to provide any reasoning. This film could have probably benefited from the tension a bomb blast subplot could provide. The need for conflict and urgency to liven up the film’s proceedings is also felt deeply because the leads, though earnest and capable, are given such insipid, blasé dialogue and there is only so much one can do with it.  If most Telugu films need dialogues to thrive, this film needs dialogues to survive and Popcorn , much like Sameerana in the last 20 minutes of the film, is gasping for air. There are a few decent touches, such as the one where Pavan tries to help Sameerana with her singing career or the scenes where Sameera accepts Pavan’s love, which is structured with a set-up and a payoff. In addition to the two leads, we also have a goldfish with a voiceover. I must admit, though I struggled to understand why the goldfish had dialogues - the closing scene, where Sameerana decides to release her pet into the Hussain Sagar by stating, "Have we not understood what confinement feels like," provides a satisfying touch, with me sorely wishing the film had more of them.

Popcorn is a romantic entertainer movie directed by Murali Gandham. The film has Sai Ronak and Avika Gor in the lead roles. The Music is composed by Shravan Baradwaj while MN Bal Reddy is the cinematographer. The film is produced by Bhogendra Gupta under Acharya Creations banner. Heroine Avika Gor also co-produces the film under her Avika Screen Creations banner.

Two strangers Sameerana (Avika Gor) and Pavan (Sai Ronak) get stuck in the basement of an elevator of a shopping mall after a bomb blast inside the mall. What happens inside the lift? Can their emotions towards each other change in 18 hours? How will they be rescued? Needs to be seen in the film.

What about on-screen performances?

Avika Gor as Sameerana does a pretty decent job with her performance in most of the film. She looks super cute with her toned look after her weight loss. But to be honest, this isn’t one of her best performances till date. She looked over expressive in many scenes here & there throughout the film.

Sai Ronak fails to leave a mark with his performance as Pavan. He looks very handsome in the film but acting-wise, he looks a bit immature and needs to work more on his body language & dialogue delivery.

The film majorly runs on the 2 lead characters inside the lift. So, all the rest of the limited supporting cast go unnoticed.

What about off-screen talents?

The story by Murali Gandham lacks novelty. Though the concept of the film where 2 people getting stuck inside a lift looks good, the way he has treated the film with some absolutely logicless scenes, boring conversations & silly proceedings makes the film a dull affair.

The screenplay too looks very poor and there is not even a single sequence in the film that grabs our attention. Don’t understand who the hell sings songs and celebrates a birthday inside a lift where they are stuck inside it after a bomb blast. And the mouse carrying a phone part is just out of the world. Another biggest blunder is that there is not even a single scene that tells about what happens outside the lift.

The direction by Murali Gandham is weak. His narrative is completely outdated and logicless. He should have gone on to make this into a bit of serious survival drama with light hearted moments rather than adding silly comedy sequences, baseless backstories & connections, and completely unnecessary songs.

The cinematography by MN Bal Reddy is the only plus of the film. It is tough to put in different frames in a limited space but the cameraman has done a pretty decent job.

The music by Shravan Bharadwaj doesn’t stand out. None of the songs impress as they are not required in a film like this. Even the background score is not up to the mark.

The edit by KSR needed to be more sharper. The climax portions look dragged out and nearly 10 minutes could have been cut easily.

The production values are adequate.
