Introduction, celebrities as role models.

In the introduction it is affirmed that celebrities have positive elements needed to become role models, hence explaining why most of them inspire others. In the body section, media personalities Angelina Jolie and Oprah Winfrey were analysed.

Angelina has strong values, which can be seen in her personal life as an international adopting parent and also in her role as a UN goodwill ambassador. Oprah’s success in her career and her philanthropic work teaches others how to be professionals and how to use their wealth selflessly.

These celebrities still have some flaws; but they have not let their past get in the way of their societal impact. In the conclusion, it was affirmed that celebrities’ accomplishments are easily identifiable to the public, as is the case with Angelina and Oprah, and this makes them good role models.

Since celebrities demonstrate what it means to be an extraordinary media personality, then they serve as exemplary role models. Angelina Jolie and Oprah are positive role models as seen through their career accomplishments and charity initiatives; they did not let their dark past defuse the change they instated in society.

Some celebrities illuminate their position as media personalities through the right behaviour and attitude. A role model is one whose attitude and behaviour conform to that which people expect of a person in that role. Actress Angelina Jolie exemplifies this positive role through involvement in humanitarian work and her personal life. She has worked as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations for several years.

Jolie took the personal initiative to contact the UNHCR concerning troubled regions of the world. She visited several African refugee camps in 2000. As a field agent of the UN, Jolie went to Pakistan and Cambodia to do mission work in refugee camps.

These trips started after she became the goodwill ambassador in 2001. The celebrity has visited approximately thirty countries in an attempt to create awareness about the plight of refugees. She has brought media attention back to forgotten civil conflicts. Furthermore, Jolie covers her own expenses during these missions, and shares the same deplorable conditions with other UN workers.

She undertakes these humanitarian missions bravely as seen through her entrance into conflict zones (Allen-Mills, 2008). Some celebrities may refrain from visiting dangerous places like Darfur and Afghanistan, but Jolie has not shied away from these regions. Her attitude and behaviour as a goodwill ambassador are exemplary and typical of a good role model.

Celebrities can inspire others to imitate them through their values and goals. In addition to visiting refugees, Jolie has done a lot of media campaigns and lobbying work. The celebrity even made a documentary about poverty-stricken communities in East Africa. She has worked with politicians and other bodies in Washington.

Jolie launched several foundations intended on helping children in conflict zones and those in the US who are immigrants. The actress’s long list of humanitarian awards testifies to her commitment and passion for people in need. Angelina Jolie’s accomplishments in this area illuminate the positive part that celebrities can play as role models.

She has dedicated her life to making the lives of others better, and this is something that the public can emulate (McFay, 2005). Society can also draw positive lessons from Jolie’s personal life.

The actress has adopted three children from three poor countries; that is, Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia. Her international adoptions teach people how to surpass cultural and geographical boundaries in order to unite the human race. These actions reflect the values of self sacrifice and care that others can imitate.

Role models do not have to be perfect; they only have to do their best in prevailing circumstances. Angelina Jolie has had a dark past since she experimented with drugs during her youth. Furthermore, the celebrity had shaky relationships in her 20s and 30s.

Other people also claim that her humanitarian work keeps her away from her 6 children. All these imperfections illustrate that she is only human, so they do not mirror her accomplishments.

Some celebrities inspire others through their career accomplishments, and Oprah Winfrey is one such person. Her world famous show highlighted numerous instances of goodwill and care for others. She defied numerous odds to become the richest African American in the US.

Oprah overcame child abuse, poverty and negativity to make it as a talk-show host (Avtalion, 1998). Furthermore, she has encouraged literacy through formation of her own book club. This media personality has also promoted health and fitness by launching O-Magazine as well as talking about health issues on her show. In fact, this emphasis on good health and nutrition led to Dr. Phil’s and Dr. Oz’s careers.

The latter professionals have spearheaded the fight against obesity, psychological issues and lifestyle diseases in the US. Furthermore, Oprah has taught people about the importance of spirituality. She has done this in a way that includes even the non-religious. Oprah’s role as a female entrepreneur is also inspiring to many.

The media guru used exceptional and bold tactics to buy the Oprah show and own her own network. She has created a franchise of inspirational programs and businesses. Young people can definitely look up to her when starting their careers. Many women also admire her as an influential figure in the business world.

Since celebrities make a lot of money, they can serve as examples on what to do with immense wealth, which makes them role models for others. Oprah has engaged in a lot of charitable activities. The former talk show host opened a South African Leadership Academy for underprivileged girls in 2007.

She started by donating 40 million to the charity and has given an opportunity to children who would never have gotten such a chance. Oprah has also made donations to various charities. One of the most notable ones was Project Cuddle, which focused on the plight of abandoned babies.

Furthermore, the media personality has encouraged and publicised various causes on her show and on other media outlets (Quast, 2011). Oprah’s example illustrates that celebrates can inspire others to use their wealth selflessly.

One may question a celebrity’s ability to become a role model based on his or her personal life. For instance, Oprah has never been married nor had children. Therefore, one may doubt her ability to act as a role model since families are society’s basic unit.

Celebrities have all the elements needed to become positive role models, hence explaining why most of them inspire others. Two female media personalities, Angelina Jolie and Oprah Winfrey, have proved this assertion by their relentless drive in their careers and their philanthropic work.

Angelina’s values and use of her role as a media personality have inspired others. Oprah’s career accomplishments and charity work teach others how to be professionals and how to use their wealth selflessly.

These celebrities still have some flaws; nonetheless, their imperfections do not discredit all the positive work they have done. Celebrities’ lives are easily identifiable to the public and can thus make them good role models.

Positive Effects:

"Star Power "

Celebrities are able to use their "star power" to influence others and push for progressive ideas and changes. The reason for that is their massive following . It is difficult to ignore a famous person who has millions of followers that read every message they send. If these celebrities asked for small donations or a vote for something, their audience would follow. This influence can be used to pressure politicians and change society .

Being Progressive  

Because celebrities have to be up to date with everything new happening in the world, they can push for changes that very few have thought are needed. For example they can advocate for women's rights , against racism , helping poor areas of the world and more. Often times, celebs are more effective in this than politicians.

Negative Effects:

Using it only for PR  

Plenty of famous individuals use volunteering and join international organizations just for themselves. They do not want to help people, but to be seen helping people. They create these stories of helping the poor , volunteering in poor schools, donating a small amount of money and more, just so they can "wash" their image and be seen down to earth . The moment they finish this "PR stunt" , they turn their back to the cause .

Misintention

Many fans follow celebrities for their  shiny , glamorous image . In this way, they do not take them seriously, because those celebrities are entertainers . In a situation where a celebrity tries to become serious - some might run to be a politician , others like Leonardo DiCaprio can advocate for fighting climate change , their audience might not take them seriously. This will cause that audience not care for the important problems the celebrities try to solve. After all, all their fans want is to see their favorite star being him or herself and just entertain.

Introduction

We are living through changing times, filled with challenges and hardship . A lot of people around the world are suffering due to the ongoing pandemic , the economic problems in less developed nations and the consequences of climate change . It is my view that philanthropy and international aid can be a tool for good , although many celebrities and people owning wealth use it mainly as a PR tool , rather than for improving communities around the world. This essay will address both sides of this debate.

Firstly , international superstars hold incredible power these days. With the help of social media like Facebook , Twitter and Instagram , celebrities have become public speakers in front of millions and millions of their international fans . Using these platforms can definitely guide their followers towards attentions worth discussing like women’s rights , poverty , discrimination and racism . There are many American superstars like Beyoncé  and Oprah Winfrey , who empower women all around the world, not only through their music or shows, but with motivational speeches and philanthropy to help women’s rights in less socially developed countries . This push for a positive change can often times be more powerful than simple organizations , or even politicians advocating for the same agenda . Because of this reason, I believe celebrities can use their star power to change society around us for the better.

While it’s true that famous individuals can be a force for  positive change, we can’t ignore the fact that many would prefer to either waste all the resources they have available for glamor , or use philanthropy for expanding their own personal brand . It is clear that once people become successful and money stops being an issue in their life, many prefer to use it mostly on themselves or even hoard it away . A lot of famous celebrities use charity only in a last case scenario , usually after they’ve made a public mistake . They donate or volunteer to sort of “wash” themselves of their previous mistakes, without actually trying to focus on the problems people have. It is a well-known PR stunt for many, especially young celebs , that once they make a mistake like taking drugs , or having an affair – they rush to some small city school and take a photoshoot session  with the poor students. By doing this, they not only do not contribute anything to improving the kid’s life, but instead focus all the cameras and attention on themselves and their “ act of good will ”. Obviously, this is counterproductive .

IELTS essay about celebrities and their personal lives

Essay topic

Some celebrities say that their private lives shouldn’t come under media scrutiny. Other people, however, believe that they should accept it as part of their fame. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample essay

Celebrities live under constant media surveillance. Every aspect of their life makes headlines. Some of them certainly enjoy the attention they get; others have problems with it.

Celebrities thrive on the media attention they get. That is exactly what makes them celebrities. No one complains when they are making news for all the right reasons. Even celebrities who guard their personal lives have no problems when the media praises them for their immaculate sense of dressing or their flamboyant lifestyle. They themselves post personal photos on their social profiles. But when the same media lambast them for wearing the wrong outfit or dating the wrong person, they get upset. They get upset when the media publishes their unflattering images. Just like any other person, celebrities also have a right to privacy. But when you decide to be a celebrity, you are actually agreeing to live under constant media scrutiny and public attention.

There are several benefits to being a celebrity. Celebrities enjoy good popularity. This popularity helps them endorse products and make truckloads of money. They are icons to millions of people. Naturally people want to know about their personal lives and the media satisfy that hunger. This often results in the intrusion of privacy.

To conclude, constant media scrutiny is a byproduct of stardom. A person who enjoys the benefits of being a celebrity must be willing to take the negative aspects as well. In my opinion, celebrities should take this sportingly. By choosing to become a celebrity they themselves have agreed to be in the limelight. So, they should take any intrusion into their personal life as part of their fame.

There was a time when consumer goods companies paid musicians, athletes, and actors for endorsements, or to license their name and likeness. But in recent years, there’s been an explosion of celebrities getting into business directly, selling everything from shapewear to tequila. Ayelet Israeli, professor at Harvard Business School, says the growth of social media and online, direct-to-consumer retail accelerated this trend, but notes that not all celebrity brands are a success. She explains what works and doesn’t, and outlines lessons for non-famous entrepreneurs and established companies. Israeli is coauthor of the HBR article  “What Makes a Successful Celebrity Brand?”

ALISON BEARD: Welcome to the HBR IdeaCast from Harvard Business Review. I’m Alison Beard.

So you might not suspect this about me, but I am an avid reader of Us Weekly, the celebrity magazine. Amid all the business reading I do, it’s a true guilty pleasure. But over the past several years, I’ve noticed these two worlds converging somewhat. Musicians, athletes, actors, reality stars – I’m talking about Rihanna Ryan Reynolds, LeBron, the Kardashians – they’re all becoming serious business people and they’re making a whole lot more money from the products they sell, whether it’s makeup, gin, sports drinks, or shapewear than from the songs, games, shows, or films that made them famous.

When did this shift happen and why? And what does it mean for existing consumer goods companies and regular entrepreneurs?

Today’s guest is here to explain how social media and online retail have boosted celebrity brands, what makes a good or bad one, and the impact this trend is having on the broader economy. Ayelet Israeli is a professor at Harvard Business School.

She’s the co-author along with Jill Avery, Leonard Schlesinger, and Matt Higgins of the HBR article, What Makes a Successful Celebrity Brand? And she joins me now. Ayelet, welcome.

AYELET ISRAELI: Thank you so much for having me.

ALISON BEARD: So celebrity endorsements have been around for decades. Nike’s built a business around it. Why have celebrity-owned brands become so much more prevalent nowadays?

AYELET ISRAELI: We think that essentially several factors brought us here. Number one, the rise of what we call the creator economy or influencer marketing, where there are so many social media influencers and consumers have gotten used to engaging with them and seeking their authenticity and input around a lot of different topics. One of them is recommending products or services, and actually today’s consumers feel that this channel is more authentic. They believe it more than the traditional endorsements. So that’s kind of one factor, just the growth of what we call influencer marketing.

I think the second factor is that it used to be that in order to learn anything about a celebrity, you would need to follow Us Weekly or many other magazines, TMZ, all of that. And now with the rise of social media and the ability of everyone to connect and share every piece of their life, it feels like you’re more connected to these people who decide to share their life with you. So there is more of a direct line of communication than ever before.

Third, we know now that in this day and age, it’s just so much easier to launch brands because of the growth of e-commerce and direct-to-consumer branding. It’s easier to procure, to launch, to develop brands. So that kind of ability to do that makes it easier also for celebrities to do.

And I think the last piece of that is that what we typically see regular brands do or typical brands do, is actually use endorsements or influencers as part of their media strategy and as part of their paid marketing. Whereas celebrities, given the fact that they have this followership and this connection with consumers and followers, they can actually leverage these social media channels that are kind of free for them and thereby reduce the cost of getting to consumers, communicating with consumers, and having a huge advantage over existing brands.

ALISON BEARD: So that direct connection with consumers seems critical. You can market directly to them, you can sell directly to them rather than going through traditional retail channels. How has that sort of disrupted the broader advertising and consumer goods industries?

AYELET ISRAELI: We see more and more spend on influencer marketing, on TikTok. Things that didn’t exist a few years ago are now important channels and traditional brands are also figuring out how to use all of these different channels and social media strategies in order to develop their own ability to communicate with consumers. Always there is this challenge of how do I pick influencers? How do I attract influencers that are consistent with my brand, that deliver the message of my brand, that their listeners or their followers would actually be willing to accept or believe the message that they provide and actually turn that into sales?

ALISON BEARD: We have seen really successful celebrity brands in the past. I’m thinking as far back as the George Foreman Grill or Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop or Dr. Dre and Beats, are there any lessons that today’s celebrities have taken away from those earlier entrants in the category?

AYELET ISRAELI: One thing that these brands have in common was the true kind of fit between the celebrity and the product category of their brand. So if you think about Dr. Dre, it’s obvious connection to music, to the ability to listen to the tunes in a certain way, and that strong connection makes it really believable. Like, “Yeah, I can see Dr. Dre using this, I believe their endorsement of this.” It’s the same logic of the Michael Jordan Jordans with Nike where it allows consumers to have this special relationship with the product through their relationship with the celebrity almost.

ALISON BEARD: At the same time, I feel like there are reasons to be wary of a celebrity brand. Like why would Ryan Reynolds know more about making gin through his brand, Aviation Gin, than a beverage company like Diageo? Or why would Rihanna know more about lipstick to make Fenty Beauty than L’Oreal would? So how did these brands overcome that skepticism to be perceived as very high quality, very valuable, rather than gimmicky?

AYELET ISRAELI: So we definitely see a pattern that the product actually has to be very, very good. And it’s either that it was actually developed by people with expertise in this domain, or the celebrity actually has domain knowledge to be able to produce this product. But if the product is not actually superior, consumers are no fools. Consumers might buy the first one, but then word of mouth is going to essentially kill the product if it’s not good. So that has to be there, but often it has to come through trial, which is a benefit of these celebrity brands relative to regular brands where we might expect that trial for them is actually cheaper because I have some affinity to this celebrity. So you might have more sales than a product that is the same quality, but from someone unknown because of the initial hype, because of the initial excitement by the celebrity. But then you will also lose sales very quickly once the word is out that the product is not good.

ALISON BEARD: So how do these celebrities go about developing the expertise they need or hiring the expertise they need to develop that kind of superior product that can beat those being offered by multinational companies?

AYELET ISRAELI: In our article, we basically looked more deeply into two main case studies: Kim Kardashian’s Skims product that started out as shapewear and is now kind of activewear, loungewear, bras. They even have men’s products. And the second one is Dave Chang’s Momofuku. Dave Chang is a well-known celebrity chef that started creating also CPG products that consumers can make at home like chili crunch or noodles or things like that.

He was known as a chef. He was known as particular tastes, flavors, things you would expect. And then he could lend this expertise very easily for people to believe that, “Okay, this is actually a good product, or he has credence there, or this is something that should be high quality.” And people tasted it and it was actually good.

And then with Kim Kardashian, the story is a little bit different, but what is interesting about the initial Skims product, the shapewear product, is this idea that it is actually a solution-based product, a need-based product. She and her friends had a real issue with the existing shapewear. One was the typical colors of the shapewear. So typically what is skin color is not necessarily skin color for many people. And she used to color it by herself with tea bags or with coffee. And then that was one challenge. And the other challenge was the particular cuts and shapes of the clothes that she likes to wear that perhaps show more or reveal more than typical clothing. The existing shapewear wouldn’t fit that either.

So there was a real need for a solution. And through that need, she developed a product. And of course then she had to work with experts to develop something that will actually work, but it came from something real that she needed and something real that she saw that there is a market for, and then collaborated with people that have the expertise to take it to the next level.

And I think with both of these cases, I believe also with the cases, the examples you mentioned, we have examples of people, of celebrities that are deeply involved with the product and deeply care about the quality of the product in a way that actually assures that it will be a better product.

ALISON BEARD: And how do they find the time? I feel like that’s what I’m always wondering. It’s like how do they do it when they’re also shooting films, but then they’re incredibly hands-on managers of these brands.

AYELET ISRAELI: So I think some people are incredibly hands-on and some people are not. But I think really the answer is that it’s not just them alone. They have staff, they find the right co-founders, collaborators. Dave Chang has a fantastic CEO that leads a lot of aspects of the business. Kim Kardashian has two co-founders, Jens and Emma Grede that actually have a lot of expertise in this field. So it’s not just them, but they are involved as much as possible to ensure the aspects of the product they care about. We know that up until this day, Kim Kardashian tries out all the different products that Skims create. And Dave Chang is incredibly involved in developing the products as well. Perhaps not in necessarily developing the whole go-to-market strategy, but yes, in the aspects that are critical to him, which is the flavor of the product and ensuring that the product is good.

ALISON BEARD: Okay. So you’ve talked about the celebrity product fit, strong social media following, developing a superior product, listening to consumers. I want to dig into a couple of those things more deeply. So on the social media issue, the person has to start with a very big following and an almost intimate relationship with those followers.

AYELET ISRAELI: So I would actually emphasize the second part of what you said more, the intimate relationship. So you can have a lot of followers, but they are not necessarily a followership and this kind of real connection, real engagement with the celebrity or with the social media influencer. I believe a lot of these principles can apply to celebrities that grew from being influencers. It’s not just the number of the followers, but it’s really this followership relationship. It’s really that a follower feels a true connection. Like they have a conversation like they know this person and they act upon what they see this person advertises on social media or see this person says on social media for this to actually work out. So you might have the exact number of followers of someone else, but that person, celebrity, or that influencer doesn’t create as engaging a relationship or their followers don’t feel as engaged, in which case it’s not going to work very well.

ALISON BEARD: But you do offer cases where celebrities who don’t have big social media followings and don’t post a lot have been successful. I’m thinking about Scarlett Johansson with her beauty brand Outset or George Clooney with Casamigos tequila. So it doesn’t seem like social media is a totally necessary ingredient?

AYELET ISRAELI: I think then some of the advantages that we see social media providing such as this direct relationship with consumer and reducing the cost of customer acquisition are just not going to be there as much as when you have this direct relationship with consumers and you might need more support on other aspects of the brand. You don’t have as much brand awareness or as much demand generation through consumers talking about the brand as you would when you have this direct influencer relationship. And then you would have to figure out other ways to do this. So you might have to go directly to retail faster or have to spend more money on advertising campaigns compared to situation where there is this strong social media following.

ALISON BEARD: And we’ve talked a lot about good celebrity product fits. What is an example of a bad one?

AYELET ISRAELI: So one example was Hulk Hogan who was a-

ALISON BEARD: 1980s wrestling star?

AYELET ISRAELI: Yes. We have seen that some of his early forays into business or into celebrity brands were around food. So he had, for example, Pastamania, which was a fast food restaurant that closed very quickly. He had these cheeseburgers, a lot of foods like that that we have just not seen a lot of traction with. And there are probably many reasons it could have failed, but we believe that one strong reason is this real lack of connection. What is the expertise of Hulk Hogan with pasta or burgers other than he’s a person that eats them. And I think also in the time when he was active, there was a different relationship with celebrities than there is now. You didn’t have this direct channel and consumers were looking for other things than they are looking for now.

ALISON BEARD: At the same time, I feel like there are a couple examples now where the fit doesn’t necessarily seem obvious. I think of George Clooney and his tequila brand. Ryan Reynolds and his gin brand. How did they make that leap that I’m not an expert in this, but I’m still making it something you want to buy?

AYELET ISRAELI: George Clooney is more of a mystery to me because he also shies away from social media and does not play this game. Whereas Ryan Reynolds is really a marketing expert and he really, for all the brands he’s been involved with, he has so much to say. He connects with consumers, he advertises them on social media. He has always clever ways to bring it on. So I think that is more aligned with the other examples we’ve seen. Whereas George Clooney’s example is just completely different.

ALISON BEARD: It’s just the cool of Clooney rubs off on a tequila.

AYELET ISRAELI: And his charm. It’s the Clooney charm.

ALISON BEARD: What are some ways that you see celebrities really interacting with their followers to improve the products, to get from sort of that minimum viable one that they’re able to launch really successfully to one that really is superior and beats the competition?

AYELET ISRAELI: So one thing we’ve seen is influencers and also celebrities, but influencers actually talking to their followers and asking them about the product and seeking their feedback before they even use the brand. So even giving them access to beta products, asking them what are they interested in, what type of designs, what type of fabric. So really engaging the community almost to co-create something the community is interested in.

ALISON BEARD: Speaking of co-creation, are we in a world now where companies or even entrepreneurs are now thinking, “I need to move beyond trying to get a celebrity or influencer to endorse my product. I actually need to, from the beginning, partner with this person to make it and launch it”?

AYELET ISRAELI: Not all brands need a celebrity, but a celebrity is definitely an unlock into this idea of how can I reduce my customer acquisition cost? So one thing we’ve seen starting around 2010, there was an era of direct to consumer brands and their whole kind of philosophy was we can cut out the middlemen. So we’re not going to sell through retail, we’re going to sell direct to consumers. We can do that thanks to e-commerce, thanks social media. It’s really easy to procure product, to create brands, and to sell online. So why not do that? But then when you cut out the middlemen, you actually have these activities that retailers use to do for you, like generating demand and generating awareness that you suddenly have to do. So in the early days of direct to consumer, we’ve seen brands doing this really successfully on Facebook and other websites where it was relatively cheap for them to advertise and to find consumers and to get these consumers to buy their products.

But quickly, many other brands, both incumbent brands and new brands started also advertising. And all of these costs increased so much that they’re out of control these days and it’s just not very sustainable to continue advertising for the current customer acquisition costs. And that’s a true concern for businesses of how am I going to acquire customers? How am I going to incur all these costs? And a celebrity could give you this ability to reduce these costs significantly if they are willing to work at selling your product through their channels that are not paid, for instance, their social media channels.

ALISON BEARD: But then you’re giving them a big cut of the profits.

AYELET ISRAELI: You would have to give them a cut of the profits, for sure. Not all celebrities are willing to work at selling. There is a shift. You said initially we’ve seen celebrity endorsement in many years, but that would just mean I’m wearing the product, which is a different activity than engaging in selling a product.

ALISON BEARD: So what advice do you give companies and startups that are interested in partnering with celebrities? Does it start with an endorsement or influencer relationship and then build from there?

AYELET ISRAELI: One thing to look at that we talked about is this idea that it’s not just a number of followers. You actually need to see how much engagement they have. And there are currently tools to look into that. But you see there are average metrics of engagement such as comments, likes, reposting for different channels that you see kind of the convergence of number of followers, how many people actually engage with a posting. And that helps you understand is there a true followership or are there just a lot of followers for a particular celebrity? So that’s one that is important. Two, of course, what we talked about is this idea of fit. Is this celebrity credibly selling this product? People are looking for some kind of authenticity. Are we going to believe this or is this going to seem a very hard sell for consumers?

And then I think there has to be an element where the celebrity is willing to be involved in the product in some way. So if we’re talking about a situation where a brand already has a product, so it’s not necessarily involvement in development like we talked about in the Kim Kardashian or the David Chang case, but it has to be involvement in selling, involvement in talking to consumer, involvement in something that makes the connection seem more real, more organic, more believable to consumers.

ALISON BEARD: And I imagine that it’s also really important to think about the risks of a particular personality.

AYELET ISRAELI: Certainly.

ALISON BEARD: Adidas and Kanye West come to mind.

AYELET ISRAELI: Certainly. So of course celebrities can go out of fashion. There are lots of PR crises that are possible with celebrities. And of course you need to take that into account as you think about your own brand health of who might be a good fit, and also if there is going to be a scandal, how am I going to get out of this? And we’ve seen historically that if the brand in relationship of endorsements, the brand can easily cut off ties with that person. But if you are developing kind of a celebrity brand where the brand is so centered around this one persona, then this is going to be a little bit harder.

ALISON BEARD: I truly think that I hear or read about a new celebrity brand almost every day. Is the market getting too crowded?

AYELET ISRAELI: So I think we hear about a lot of celebrity brands, but I don’t know that we’ve seen so many successful celebrity brands. It goes back to this quote by the CEO of Warby Parker, and of course I’m paraphrasing, but it’s something like, it’s never been easier to launch a brand, but it’s also never been harder to actually sustainably grow that brand. So sure, you can create new products very easily, especially if you have access to capital, which a lot of these celebrities do. But then it’s not necessarily going to gain any traction. And surprisingly, one of the first issues is perhaps more obvious one, which is the product is oftentimes not that good and consumers are going to sense that very quickly.

ALISON BEARD: This is really my big question because I feel like this trend is happening in other areas too, like celebrity podcasting and celebrity children’s books. So what about businesses, entrepreneurs with no celebrity association? You have a great product, but you’re not a big name with a massive social media falling and millions of dollars already, and ways to get meetings with venture capitalists or other investments. How do you compete?

AYELET ISRAELI: One of the things that is helpful is brand storytelling. So you might not have the story of a celebrity, but you might have an interesting and compelling story for your own brand that you can leverage. And of course, these brands, I mean they’ve always had to work on PR and how do I get people excited and things like that. It is true that it will be harder for them to get attention, but oftentimes once they do, it seems more credible to some people. Again, I know it sounds obvious, but really start with a good product. I think oftentimes we forget that. If you don’t have a good product to begin with, then what are you doing?

And I also think there is this question of hype or fad versus longevity and brands that actually create value. And a lot of these things are sometimes just hype, just fad. Like, “Okay, I will buy a book that a celebrity wrote, even if it’s not a very good book, but am I going to buy another copy of that book?” And what we see with the examples I mentioned is that retention rates are really high. People are willing to buy multiple products from the Skims brand and from the Momofuku brand and from other brands. So there is this question of do people just buy one to feel connection with the celebrity or because they’re interested in a celebrity and they’re interested in listening to one episode or something like that, or is there a real ongoing relationship?

And really what we care about as marketers and business people is this relationship with consumers. We want them to come back, we want them to bring their friends. All of these aspects of that.

What qualities do you believe make someone a celebrity?

 If somebody can influence others, has fame, and is good at their actions, that person becomes a celebrity. 

Why do people become fascinated with celebrities’ lives? 

Celebrities’ lives live a life to showcase people. They gain their popularity by doing so. People get fascinated because they believe that celebrities are the role models. The style, power, and money inspire them. 

Can you name a celebrity who has had a positive influence on society?  

There is a classical singer. Her name is Maythali Raj. She was a contestant in a singing competition on television. People admire her work because she is perfect in how she sings. She is growing the culture of Indian classical music. She follows Western trends. She is putting India’s map on a global level. She is very inspiring. How do you think social media has changed how you interact with your fans? Sorry, sir, your voice is breaking. 

How do you think social media has changed how celebrities interact with fans?

Suppose I talk about the era when social media was not available to everybody; at that time, people used to have a glance at their popular culture. In Beijing, they used to queue and celebrate their presence. Now, social media is happening in its place. People follow their celebrities and favourite people on their apps, Instagram, and YouTube. These celebrities are making good money out of it.

What are some common misconceptions or stereotypes about celebrities?  

One of the most common misconceptions is that celebrities are always happy. Everybody is a person, and then she may be a celebrity. They have a family and their issues. They have their own stories. However, they only portray the good things on social media or in public. People assume that celebrities are rich and famous. Then, they might not be having any issues. But that is not true.

How do you think celebrity endorsements influence consumer behaviour and brand perception?  

This term is used for the person who represents that brand. The person is known as a brand ambassador. They are known as an ambassador for a reason. When they connect to that brand, the people who admire that person automatically tend to learn and buy that product. The popularity has something to do with consumer perception. If people admire a specific personality, they only think a little before purchasing the product.

 How do celebrities use their platform and influence to advocate for social and political causes?  

Social and political conflicts are a part of everybody’s life. But it takes hype in the news when it comes to famous people. It often leads to a change of thought and perception of their fans. The people who follow their celebrity wholeheartedly and are diehard fans, those people can have a similar perception on radio. 

How does the media shape our perceptions of celebrities? 

Media, in general, especially the paparazzi, who try to capture the real-life moments of celebrities, give them an edge simultaneously. They are also invading their privacy. So whatever media showcases to the world, people rely on it, not knowing what reality is and what is not. So, the media can be misleading sometimes. 

 What are your thoughts on the concept of celebrity worship?

 It’s good to admire somebody and get inspired by their personality. But having your take on several aspects which are very important to society is very important. You cannot blindfold yourself and follow the fame of somebody famous because they are good at what they do. People should have the intellect to think about issues and decide right from wrong. 

Do you wish to be a celebrity in the future?

 I don’t wish to be a celebrity in the future because fame is not for me. I have different plans in my life. I want to do things in a very different way. I want to have my personal life and live like a person who can celebrate things in the crowd. The disadvantage of being a celebrity is that they cannot enjoy the little things in life. I want to enjoy that, so celebrity is not one thing for me.

1 who is your favourite celebrity in your country.

I guess not only me, but a number of young people have also been highly impressed by her for the past months- Deshauna Barber. She is our 2016 Miss USA and the representative of the USA in Miss Universe taking place in Las Vegas in the same year. After the beauty contests, she became well-known for her outstanding beauty, her amazing characteristics and also her professionalism .

2 Do you like any foreign celebrities?

Absolutely. The person I’m gonna talk about is my bias ever since I was a teenage girl-Miley Cyrus. I guess most people at the same age as I, grew up with Disney Channel and among its successful series, Hannah Montana starring Miley Cyrus would always be on top of my list . Although now she’s grown up, I’m still a big fan of her amazing voice and highly inspiring songs.

3 Would you like to be a celebrity? Why?

Well though I’ve never thought about it, I’m pretty sure that rising to stardom would never be one of my life goals. I appreciate all the efforts that the celebrities, no matter which field they’re working on, are making every single day. However, I find myself not belonging to that world, I mean, you never know what’s going on when the curtains close , right? So yeah, I don’t think I want to become a public figure , to be honest.

4 Do you think we should protect famous people’s privacy?

Indeed. As you probably can tell, these days fans, anti-fans and even non-fans are so curious about what their bias is doing. Some are aggressive that they mentally attack their bias by leaving bad comments online. Some even approach them in person on the street, especially the so-called paparazzi . Thus I strongly agree that there should be some regulations to protect the celebrities’ privacy.

5 How do celebrities influence their fans in your country?

I think the influence of celebrities on fans is extensive. It’s somehow natural to follow our bias and try to be like them. At the first place, it could probably be just physical changes like clothing, hairstyle or makeup. However thanks to the social network, fans and idols are much closer now, sometimes it’s just a status away. However, this mental connection is a two-edged sword , meaning the idols actually need to be more careful about their lifestyle or their manners.

  • Bias: A concentration on our interest in one particular area or subject. Eg: A judge shouldn’t  be biased
  • To be on top of the list: To be the highest priority Eg: Anushka is considered to be on the top of the list because of her good grades
  • To be a (big/huge /avid ) fan of: To admire Something Eg: Rhea is a big fan of Ranbir Singh
  • No matter : Without much worries Eg: “No matter how much I try I m not able to solve this problem” 
  • To appreciate: Recognize the full worth of/To be grateful of Something Eg: We should always appreciate people for their good work
  • What’s going on when the curtains close : The secrets lie behind the showbiz Eg: I really doubt whether it’s the truth as I don’t know what’s going on when curtains close
  • To rise to stardom: To become famous Eg: After the film “ABC”, the actor rose to stardom
  • Public figure: A well-known and notable person Eg: He is completely a public figure

Zendaya for $200? ‘Jeopardy!’ Plans to Stream a Pop Culture Spinoff

Sony Pictures Television said that “Pop Culture Jeopardy!” — which will pit teams of three against one another — would be streamed on Prime Video.

“Jeopardy!” has long been ruled primarily by broadcast TV. As a staid, reliable quiz show that had the same host for 36 years , viewers have grown to depend on it at a certain time, on a certain channel.

But on Tuesday, Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, announced a new spinoff — a pop culture edition — that will be streamed only on Prime Video. The spinoff, called “Pop Culture Jeopardy!,” is part of a yearslong expansion of what the show’s producers have called the “Jeopardy!”-verse, as they have pushed new spinoffs and tournaments to shake up the brand, while also avoiding any major changes to the main show that might rankle its most devoted fans.

The announcement about the new spinoff said contestants would compete in teams of three. Some of the topics that might come up, it said, include alternative rock music, “The Avengers,” Broadway, mixed martial arts and high-profile celebrities such as Zendaya.

Under Michael Davies, who has been an executive producer of “Jeopardy!” since 2021, “Jeopardy!” has undergone a wave of expansion, featuring a new masters league with the show’s most successful players, a Second Chance Tournament that invites back promising contestants and a revival of “Celebrity Jeopardy!”

It has not yet been announced who will host the pop-culture spinoff. Since the death of the show’s longtime host, Alex Trebek, in 2020 , the succession process has been somewhat tortured. The initial plan to promote the show’s executive producer, Mike Richards, to host imploded after revelations that Richards had made offensive comments on a podcast. For a while, the actor Mayim Bialik split hosting duties with Ken Jennings, the show’s former champion, until Bialik abruptly announced late last year that she had been removed, leaving Jennings as the sole host, at least for now.

“Jeopardy!” has had limited ventures into streaming before now. Viewers can stream some “Jeopardy!” episodes on Pluto TV, and the prime-time spinoffs stream on Hulu the day after they first air. The show used to have a sports trivia spinoff that could be found on Crackle, an online streaming service that never quite took off.

“All Fours” seems determined to cure the inhibitions of middle age by plunging us into a bubble bath of erotic candor.

The multitalented artist Miranda July has written a wildly sexual book about a woman approaching menopause, so of course it’s time for a square old man to pass judgment.

At your service.

But first, is it getting hot in here?

I’ve never reviewed such an explicit novel before. I felt so self-conscious reading “ All Fours ” on the subway that I tore off the cover. July, 50, seems determined to cure the inhibitions of middle age by stripping away every censorial impulse and plunging us into a bubble bath of erotic candor.

Although such a description may invoke the spirit of Anaïs Nin, July is too funny for that association. In these pages, she’s outrageous and outrageously hilarious. With “All Fours,” perimenopausal readers finally have their own “Portnoy’s Complaint.” But even that comparison doesn’t capture the immediacy of July’s prose, its infallible timing, its palpable sense of performance. Indeed, several unforgettable (and unquotable) sections have the snap and swoop of a transgressive stand-up routine.

The unnamed narrator — “a woman who had success in several mediums” — is a close approximation of July, who’s published books; directed, written and acted on stage and in films ; and currently has a solo art show in Milan. Although “All Fours” is labeled a novel, the space between the author’s life and the story’s protagonist is often no wider than a bra strap.

At the opening, the narrator, who’s just turned 45, plans to celebrate by driving from her home in Los Angeles to New York, where she’ll see some theater, visit museums and catch up with old friends. But the journey will be as important as the destination. During this grand cross-country road trip, the narrator imagines becoming “the sort of chill, grounded woman I’d always wanted to be.”

She plans out the six-day itinerary with tourist sites marked along the way. She packs all the snacks she’ll need. She forces herself to have sex with her husband one more time. And then, finally, with some trepidation, she sets off for the East Coast. This will be the longest she’s ever been away from her child.

Thirty minutes later, she stops for gas. Then a meal. A hot young guy named Davey strikes up a conversation. He’s employed by Hertz, and his wife, Claire, works for an interior decorator. “He didn’t question whether any of this was interesting,” the narrator notes. “All handsome young men enjoyed a minor-celebrity treatment that they were unaware of.” But she’s not irritated; she’s titillated. Though just 20 miles from home, she rents a room at a shabby roadside motel. That night she tells her husband she’s made it to Utah.

Her sense of release is transformative. “I was free to do anything I wanted,” she says with astonishment. “No one to make breakfast for, no need to pack a five-part bento box lunch, no need to yell Put on your shoes!” Why should she bother getting back on the road to New York?

July writes with a delightful sense of discontinuity — life as a series of absurd non sequiturs — but there are big themes controlling her work. Here, she’s moving along a subversive highway that stretches from Kate Chopin’s “The Awakening” to Claire Vaye Watkins’s “ I Love You but I’ve Chosen Darkness ” — stories about women who come to see conventional domestic arrangements as an artistic and sexual grave.

The difference, though, is just how much fun July and her readers have along the way. Convinced that she wants to spend her entire 2½-week vacation holed up in this motel a few miles from home, the narrator hires Claire to redecorate the room with a budget of $20,000 — money she’d recently earned by selling a line about a sex act to a whiskey marketing campaign. While her room is remade with gorgeous new carpet, wallpaper, tile and furniture, she continues to lie about her whereabouts to her family — and begins an emotionally intense affair with Davey.

“What kind of monster makes a big show of going away and then hides out right nearby?” she asks. “But this was no good, this line of thought. This was the thinking that had kept every woman from her greatness. … How many times had I turned back at the first ripple of self-doubt? You had to withstand a profound sense of wrongness if you ever wanted to get somewhere new.”

This motel oasis, designed for her comfort, feels to her like a revelation and a revolution. But it’s essentially Virginia Woolf’s “A Room of One’s Own” with KY Jelly. And that’s not the only thing slippery about it. Yes, “All Fours” is much funnier and infinitely sexier than Woolf’s essay, but the novel’s financial naiveté feels almost willful. The narrator imagines that her newfound freedom is predicated on having more confidence and better orgasms, but it’s actually predicated on having better child care and health insurance.

Unfortunately, little of that material reality comes across in this novel, which seems to take place among a set of wealthy women whose personal autonomy is unimpeded by politics or economics. Not that the narrator thinks of herself as powerful or rich — the privileged in America rarely do — but her house has an appraised value of $1.8 million. There are, I bet, some women in America who can’t sell a single sentence for $20,000 — or even half that. As far as “All Fours” is concerned, for them, there is no room in the inn.

But July explores issues of a more universal nature, too. The narrator’s fantasy-fueled affair with Davey and his refusal to have sexual intercourse with her spark a crisis of faith. She’s never before felt so overcome with desire for anyone, and she’s never failed to get what she wants. “This was my first experience of being too old,” she says. “Now suddenly my lust was uncouth, inappropriate.” What’s worse, she realizes, this is no isolated strikeout. “From now on this would be the norm.”

After she returns home and tries to go back to what passes for normal life, a visit to her gynecologist brings even more alarming news: Given her age, her libido is “about to fall off a cliff.” Why had no one warned her? “I had only just come into my sexuality about two months ago and so the thought of losing it. … A sob escaped me.”

She’s haunted by stories of her grandmother and aunt, both of whom killed themselves by jumping out of the same window 23 years apart. “I was next in this matriarchal lineage,” she says. Could the cessation of sexual appetite and opportunity be the root cause? Is the only path left open, she wonders, one of prolonged bitterness, the kind of marginality that infuriates the narrator of Claire Messud’s “ The Woman Upstairs ”?

“Most of us wouldn’t do anything very different, ever,” she admits. “Our yearning and quiet rage would be suppressed and seep into our children and they would hate this about us.”

In response to that grim fate, “All Fours” is a brash, witty, libidinal, “ NO! ”

The novel may lose some of its narrative drive in the second half, but the narrator refuses to concede that the journey from horny to hoary must end in grizzled insensibility. Maybe, she suggests, there are ways for women to redirect their lives, their relationships and even their fantasies away from sexual irrelevance and toward renewable pleasures.

Trying to predict the wider social impact of any novel is a fool’s errand; the fate of almost all books is oblivion. But something about “All Fours” — its outrageous sexuality, its quirky humor, its earnest search for change — could, who knows, rally a generation of women who will not go gentle into that vaginal dryness.

“We were all witches until very recently,” July writes. “We were cast out and burned at the stake.”

Woe unto anyone who tries that again. This witch won’t burn, but she’s on fire.
