'I missed out on psychiatry as a medical student because I was on my honeymoon. It wasn't compulsory and I wasn't examined on it. I began to realise what I had missed when I started my general practice training, and after 3 years as a GP I decided to apply for psychiatry training with a view to returning to general practice later. My first consultant told me that I had the common sense that was needed in psychiatry. To be honest, I hadn't expected to enjoy it quite so much!

A career in psychiatry allows you to get to know your patients and their families and to feel that you can really make a difference to their lives as a member of their healthcare team. The settings in which we practice are varied, and perhaps because my roots were in general practice, I feel especially at home in the community.

Some people think psychiatry is an easy option. It isn't. I think it is one of the most challenging careers in medicine. It is also intellectually stimulating and personally satisfying. Many people choose a career in psychiatry because they have experience of mental illness themselves, or in their own family, or perhaps a family member has a learning disability, and that's fine; personal experience increases one's empathy for others, and this is an essential attribute for all psychiatrists. My son has a learning disability and that's why I specialised in psychiatry of learning disability having initially trained in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy.

If psychiatry appeals to you, give it a try. Ask some psychiatrists to talk to you about their careers. Doctors who choose psychiatry for the right reasons rarely regret it.

So come and join us. Help us with your intelligence to continue the advances in psychiatric knowledge. Help us with your eloquence to combat the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Help us with your innovative flair to make use of the government's growing interest in mental health services. And help us with your humanity to make relationships with those in need.'

Professor Shelia Hollins President (2005-2008) Royal College of Psychiatrists

Help spread the word about our essay competitions to undergraduates and Foundation doctors

The College’s two annual essay prizes offer undergraduates and Foundation doctors the chance to take an in-depth look at a particular aspect of pathology through a written piece. To celebrate the College's 60th anniversary, this year's essay questions centre around the impact of pathology over the last 60 years.

Prize winners will be awarded £250 and will have their essay published on our website and in the College magazine,  The Bulletin . The winning entry in each category will also be published on the RCPath website and the writers of the winning essays will be presented with a certificate at an RCPath event.

The Paola Domizio Undergraduate Essay Prize is named after Professor Paola Domizio, an RCPath Fellow who contributed a huge amount to the work of the College and to pathology education. The competition is open to students studying an undergraduate course in a relevant discipline, such as medicine or biomedicine. This year’s essay question is 'Which one scientific discovery or pathologist has had the most significant impact on medicine/pathology in the last 60 years?'. Entries of up to 1000 words will be accepted until Monday 25 April 2022.

The Hugh Platt Foundation Essay Prize invites Foundation doctors to explore how pathology has changed in the last 60 years in an essay of up to 1000 words. The competition is posthumously named after Dr Hugh Platt, an RCPath Fellow who contributed a huge amount to the work of the College, and to the support of postgraduate medical training in pathology disciplines. The Foundation essay prize will close to entrants on Monday 23 May 2022.

College members are encouraged to spread the word about both competitions to undergraduates and Foundation doctors within their networks. More information about the competition, downloadable e-flyers (shown below) and the winning essay from previous years can be found on our essay competition page .

Duncan Macmillan Essay Prize 2022: open for submissions

The Institute of Mental Health’s 2022 essay prize for psychiatry trainees is now open.

Each year, in partnership with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, we invite psychiatry trainees nationwide to submit a 1,000-word essay on the theme of:

“The next big thing in psychiatry research.”

In celebration of a  leading Nottingham psychiatrist , the annual Duncan Macmillan Essay Prize is an opportunity for trainee psychiatrists to share their vision for the direction of mental health research at a time of unprecedented demand for treatment and services.

“Entering the Duncan Macmillan Essay Prize was a great opportunity – I wrote on a topic I’m passionate about and learnt some interesting things along the way. The 1000-word limit is very manageable and gives a chance to practice academic writing skills. The prizes are well worth the effort and are an excellent addition to the CV. I put the prize money towards attending an international conference, continuing my professional development. I’d very much encourage my fellow trainees to apply.”  Dr Leigh Townsend, 2021 1st prize winner.
