Free Year 5 Maths Worksheets And Homework – Download, Print, Or View Online

Anantha Anilkumar

Here you’ll find all our Year 5 maths worksheets, and Year 5 maths tests that are suitable for use during classroom lessons and as homework.

  • What to expect from our Year 5 Maths worksheets

These KS2 maths worksheets cover every part of the Year 5 primary maths curriculum, to help your children practise and gain confidence in their understanding ahead of Year 6 and the KS2 SATs . Their focus is on retrieval practice – going over topics that children should already have covered and helping them strengthen their knowledge and understanding.

Most of our worksheets come in pdf format, and all of them are printable. But if you’re running out of printer ink, they can be viewed online too.

Every Year 5 maths test or worksheet comes with its own answer sheet, and guidance from the National Curriculum is included wherever it might be needed (for example, if there might be more than one correct answer for a question). Some worksheets also include model answers to help children break down the best way to solve a problem.

Note: The National Curriculum does not specify any place value teaching for Year 5. However this is often a good time to begin revising the topic (among others) in preparation for the KS2 SATs. Have a look at these place value worksheets as part of your revision.

Similarly, addition and subtraction work is largely an extension of what was covered in previous years. Take a look at our collection of addition and subtraction worksheets for practice materials for these topics.

If you’re a parent looking for more advice, try our  home learning hub full of home learning packs , tips and teaching ideas for Year 5 Maths at Home and maths homework .

If you’re a teacher or school leader who is interested in improving maths attainment in your school or classroom, then this whole website is for you. Third Space Learning is dedicated to improving outcomes in maths with our online tutoring programme of maths interventions , together with maths resources and CPD.

Year 5 Place Value Worksheets

Year 5 addition and subtraction worksheets, year 5 multiplication and division worksheets, year 5 fractions worksheets, year 5 decimals and percentages worksheets, year 5 statistics worksheets, year 5 measurement worksheets, year 5 maths tests, year 5 mental maths and arithmetic worksheets: fluent in five.

One of our most popular resources with parents and teachers and a great way to start or end the day, Fluent in Five worksheets include 5-10 minutes worth of quick arithmetic questions designed to help children become quicker at making mental or written calculations.

Children are given around 5 questions per maths worksheet – more than in previous years – to get them used to completing more questions in a short space of time ahead of Year 6 and the KS2 maths arithmetic paper.

Year 5 Maths reasoning and problem solving worksheets: Rapid Reasoning

Reasoning is one of the key maths skills pupils are expected to show by the time they take the Key Stage 2 SATs, and our Rapid Reasoning worksheets give them plenty of extra practice! This pack comes with six weeks of questions, with around three to four word problems to solve per day.

Free Resources for Homeschooling 5-11 Year Olds in the UK

In the UK, we’re really lucky that there are lots of great free resources we can use for homeschooling, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 year olds. So whether your child is at Key Stage 1 age (would have been in school years 1 or 2) or is Key Stage 2 age (would have been in school years 3, 4, 5 or 6) you should be able to find some great free resources for homeschooling them.

While key stages aren’t relevant to home educators, many resource providers use them to separate their resources. Remember that the education you provide should be right for your child’s age, aptitudes and abilities, don’t feel you have to use resources from the year or key stage they would have been in at school . There is no such thing as behind when you home educate.

If yo u are looking for free resources for older children have a look at this post on free homeschooling resources for 11-16 year olds .

A note on language:  In my posts, I refer to “homeschooling”. In the UK, the correct term for educating your child at home is “home Educating”, with homeschooling referring to a child doing work at home that has been set by school. I use the the term homeschooling in my posts because many people who are new to home educating will use the term homeschooling when searching online and I want to make sure they can find the information.

Homework for a 5 year old!!!

Stephanie197744 · 11/09/2021 14:05

Hi My DS has just moved up to year 1,he was only 5 in June,so is one of the youngest in his class. The majority of his class are girls and during lockdown(he was 4) when we had to log on and do live lessons and then show the work it was quite clear that the older ones especially the girls in his reception class were far more advanced in their writing and art ect. The 3 pages of "Home Challenges" at least 3 have to be done, have been sent out this week,to be completed this term, including learning colours in French!! A spelling test at the end of term, and various other things that I know he is going to struggle with. He's 5!! Am I unreasonable in thinking this is far too much and too advanced for their age? The school expects them to be done, when I voiced concerns over lockdown I was told that if I cant get him to do the work in the week then just do it over the weekend 🙄 The school is very academic and because of lockdown I didn't get to visit the schools, meet the teachers, chat to the head, before we had to pick one,I feel like I've made a massive mistake. I'm seriously considering pulling him out and putting him in another school(have several friends with kids at the other school) which seems to have a completely different form of teaching but their students are flourishing? I just dont know what to do😞 Thanks for reading x

My kids went to a state school and homework in Reception was normal. Spellings started in year 1. I have an August born son who I would have deferred if it were an option 10 years ago but unfortunately that wasn't the case. He caught up by year 6 but would have had a much easier time in the year below.

Is this a state school? Homework will be normal in Y1 of state school too

Absolutely normal in year 1.

It's in the UK and the school is funded by the local council and the church. It seems all the other first schools in my area dont set this amount of work,I have nephews in a neighbouring county school and they also don't get the amount and the more difficult things to do at this age. The school is very very academic and I dont know if this is causing my son to hate it and cry every single day,I practically have to force him in the school gate, with a member of staff holding on to him

Have you tried telling them you don't agree with homework at his age and therefore he won't be doing it. What would they do?

We don't do homework at all in my school. We have the ethos that the children work hard in school so home should be the place for them to relax and many go to clubs after school as well. The only thing they have to do is reading. Spelling now starts in year two as we are doing a new phonics scheme that doesn't allow it in the way we did it. I have found homework causes so many battles for parents, the ones that need to often don't do it and I was pleased when we stopped it. We sometimes do a mini project on things and we are about to learn poems and the quality of these is good because they are different and have a break in between.

We had homework in reception and now again in yr1 and my eldest had the same in a different school when he was that age. It's unlikely you will find a school without homework. We've always done our best and in weeks when it's been to much for some reason or another we've just done as much as we can. To be honest after last years working at home, homework feels less of a challenge as he's a bit more used to working with mum & dad than his brother was.

Not all state schools have homework, it varies quite a bit. In our school kids get weekly spellings to learn and a reading book. Over the holidays they sometimes send optional work packs home. The main emphasis from the school is on kids reading regularly at home. Maybe look at other schools and see if any are a better fit?

I dont think 3 things over a term (roughly one a month?) is too much, so I guess it depends on what the other things are that you alluded to.

I don’t mind the homework it’s a nice link to school and to help you help your child! There are songs for learning basic things - have a look in you tube and out in on in the care. Spellings - do a colorful poster and put them in the hall - ask him to spell in when putting his shoes on! Even if he looks over your shoulder to ‘cheat’ he’s still looking and learning Make it fun, rather than sat at a table and help him catch up and build confidence.

Why is it totally normal to have FRENCH homework when it's likely something if the children may not yet have a decent grasp of English? Seems weird to me. Especially as most Y1 teachers are unlikely to be able to teach MFL to any sensible level

I also think it's too much at this age. My ds is august born and the youngest in class. I've been shocked at how much homework he got in reception and y1. Weekly spellings tests, 3 reading books a week and homework sheets. In the end I focused on the reading and homework sheets and just left the spellings. It was too much for him and causing much stress and tears at home (surely counter productive to getting him to enjoy learning?). He's in year 2 now and I'm holding my breath as I'm told there's a lot expected of them. He's only just 6 and I think he'll struggle but we'll just try our best. Again, I'm focusing on reading as I feel like spelling will naturally improve with improved reading skills. It's a far cry from when I was at school but I'm ancient now so I guess it's to be expected that things will have changed!

Sad

@KidneyBeans maybe they have a teacher who is proficient in French.

I'm focusing on reading as I feel like spelling will naturally improve with improved reading skills. Totally different skills.

Confused

^The school is very academic and because of lockdown I didn't get to visit the schools, meet the teachers, chat to the head, before we had to pick one,I feel like I've made a massive mistake. I'm seriously considering pulling him out and putting him in another school(have several friends with kids at the other school) which seems to have a completely different form of teaching but their students are flourishing?^ If in hindsight the ethos of the school doesn't fit with you, and there is a viable alternative then apply for it. If/when a place comes up at the alternate school you can make a decision to move him.

Generally i treat primary school homework as optional. I don't believe it adds a lot of value. I put my efforts into reading instead. Its hard to fit an awful lot more in on top of two activities per week and some relaxation time too. Mine are also bright and work really hard at school. I have often clashed with the school about my bohemian views. But only them being huffy and disappointed. But not to any avail or needing to remove them.

@KidneyBeans you don't have to follow the NC if you are an Academy. If there are 3 pages of Home Challenges and they only have to choose 3, I am assuming learning colours in French is optional. Some children at this age love learning languages, and it is good to give them that option if they want to. There were a few parents at DS's Primary School (small rural village school) who were proficient in foreign languages and they ran after school clubs which were very popular with some children

Thank you for all your comments They have said that at least 3 should be done but I know they expect more,so its 1 a week until the end of term for October half term,it doesn't sound much but as someone else said it is a battle to get him to do any of it,he loves reading and we do that every night. He is really good with his numbers, but struggles with his writing. I have tried to make it fun but he just resists me and doesn't understand why he has to do "school work" at home(his words) I dont think French is appropriate at this age when he can't even spell the colour names in English yet! Learning colours is one of the options, but they are also doing french every week in year 1,so if he doesn't do this challenge I'm worried that he will fall behind everyone else. I have said it's too much and was told "oh he will be fine to get it all done"🙄 I am not going to fight him on this,it just upsets both of us. I will be telling the school again that if he doesn't get it all done then tough!!

But your experience isn't the OP's is it? So I'm not sure how that helps?

I will be telling the school again that if he doesn't get it all done then tough! Delightful.

Why did you choose the school, was it just the closest one? Can you arrange a meeting with the teacher?

My son got 40 mins of homework every evening in year 1. Spellings etc. It was only Mon to Thurs with weekends off. I actually think it's worth it. 3 Items a term is OK. YouTube will have French colour videos.

She was last seen July 31. Her husband reported her missing Aug. 5. Where is Mamta Kafle?

Officials in northern Virginia are asking the public for help locating a mother who is thought to have disappeared in July under "involuntary circumstances," police said earlier this month.

Mamta Kafle, 28, was last seen July 31 in Manassas Park, Virginia, according to the City of Manassas Park Police Department. The department said her disappearance is thought to be involuntary because of the length of time she has been missing.

The city is part of the Washington D.C. metro area, located roughly 30 miles west of the nation's capital. As of the latest census Manassas Park's population consisted of just over 17,000 residents.

Manassas Park police reported the young mother has not had any contact with family or friends since she vanished.

Officers responded to Kafle's home on Aug. 2 after colleagues at Inova Fairfax Hospital raised concerns , Police Chief Mario Lugo told local outlet WUSA-TV. The woman's husband, Naresh Bhatt, reported her missing Aug. 5, per multiple local reports citing Lugo.

'Follow-ups with neighbors, friends, co-workers and the husband'

Her missing person's case was assigned to the department's Investigative Services Division, police said, and remained active Thursday morning.

"What we can share at this time is the following: the investigators have conducted several follow-ups with neighbors, friends, co-workers and the husband," police posted in an update on the agency's Facebook page.

USA TODAY has reached out to Kafle's family and her friend, Nadia Navarro, who created an online fundraiser to find her .

"We need help funding the search efforts," Navarro posted on a Facebook page created to spread word about the fundraiser. As of Thursday it had raised more than $5,000. "Any donation, no matter the size, could make a huge difference, and if you can't donate, sharing the link would mean the world to us."

'I need to find her': Husband of missing woman tells reporters

Navarro, who also organized a gathering this week on the missing woman's behalf, told WJLA-TV it's not like Kafle to leave her 11-month-old daughter.

According to WRC-TV a crowd gathered earlier this week in support of Kafle and her husband spoke to the crowd by phone, saying he couldn't attend because he was caring for their daughter.

"It's like very tough," Bhatt, her husband, told WUSA-TV in an interview Wednesday adding the couple has been married for three years. "We ate on the evening of (July 31)."

Bhatt told the outlet he and Kafle did not have any ongoing arguments.

"She's a special person for me because she's caring and loving. I'm very sad."

What does Mamta Kafle look like?

According to police, Kafle stands five feet tall, weighs 132 pounds and has black hair and dark brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing blue scrubs, police said.

6-year-old girl killed in dance class in northwest England is mourned at private funeral

  • Copy Link copied

LONDON (AP) — The youngest of three girls killed when a teen went on a stabbing rampage at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class was mourned Saturday in a private funeral.

Bebe King, 6, was the second of the girls laid to rest from the July 29 killings in Southport that sparked more than a week of nationwide rioting, after misinformation spread by far-right groups incorrectly identified the suspect as a Muslim asylum seeker.

King’s family issued a statement a week ago, calling her a spirited girl “full of joy, light, and love.”

“Our hearts are broken, but we find some comfort in knowing that Bebe was so deeply loved by all who knew her,” said Lauren and Ben King, and their other daughter, Genie. “She will forever be our shimmering star, and we will carry her with us in everything we do.”

They asked news media not to photograph the funeral and limited the service at St Cuthbert’s Church to those who knew her best. They encouraged invitees to wear bright clothing and requested other supporters light a candle in her memory.

King, Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, were killed in the attack that wounded 10 others, including two adults.

King’s older sister, Genie, witnessed the attack but escaped, her parents said.

“She has shown such incredible strength and courage, and we are so proud of her,” the statement said. “Her resilience is a testament to the love and bond she shared with her little sister, and we will continue to support her as we navigate this painful journey together as a family.”

The funeral for Aguiar , who was described by her parents as a “perfect dream child,” was held last Sunday.

Chief Merseyside Police Constable Serena Kennedy spoke at that funeral and delivered the parents’ message calling for an end to the violent unrest by saying no one should commit acts of violence in their daughter’s name.

The disorder broke out the night after the stabbings following a peaceful vigil in Southport. A gang of mostly men marched toward a mosque and pelted police with bricks and bottles and set a police van on fire.

Dozens of police were injured and rioting followed the next day in London and several other cities and then spread as far as Belfast, Northern Ireland, over the week. Cars were set ablaze, businesses looted, and hotels housing asylum seekers were attacked by angry mobs.

More than 1,000 people have been arrested, so far, and efforts to deliver swift justice have already seen about 100 people sentenced to terms as long as six years in prison.

Rioting largely came to an end on Aug. 7 when police prepared for protests promoted by far-right agitators in 100 different places. Aside from some isolated incidents, those demonstrators did not turn out and were replaced instead with huge anti-racism marches.

Britain’s Violent Riots: What We Know

Officials had braced for more unrest on Wednesday, but the night’s anti-immigration protests were smaller, with counterprotesters dominating the streets instead.

After days of violent rioting set off by disinformation around a deadly stabbing rampage, the authorities in Britain had been bracing for more unrest on Wednesday. But by nightfall, large-scale anti-immigration demonstrations had not materialized, and only a few arrests had been made nationwide.

Instead, streets in cities across the country were filled with thousands of antiracism protesters, including in Liverpool, where by late evening, the counterdemonstration had taken on an almost celebratory tone.

Over the weekend, the anti-immigration protests, organized by far-right groups, had devolved into violence in more than a dozen towns and cities. And with messages on social media calling for wider protests and counterprotests on Wednesday, the British authorities were on high alert.

With tensions running high, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet held emergency meetings to discuss what has become the first crisis of his recently elected government. Some 6,000 specialist public-order police officers were mobilized nationwide to respond to any disorder, and the authorities in several cities and towns stepped up patrols.

Wednesday was not trouble-free, however.

In Bristol, the police said there was one arrest after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle and a bottle was thrown. In the southern city of Portsmouth, police officers dispersed a small group of anti-immigration protesters who had blocked a roadway. And in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where there have been at least four nights of unrest, disorder continued, and the police service said it would bring in additional officers.

But overall, many expressed relief that the fears of wide-scale violence had not been realized.

Here’s what we know about the turmoil in Britain.

Where arrests have been reported
