Coeducation was first introduced in western Europe after the Reformation, when certain Protestant groups urged that girls as well as boys should be taught to read the Bible. The practice became especially marked in Scotland, the northern parts of England, and colonial New England , where young children of both sexes attended dame school s. In the latter half of the 18th century, girls were gradually admitted to town schools. The Society of Friends in England as well as in the United States were pioneers in coeducation as they were in universal education, and, in Quaker settlements in the British colonies, boys and girls generally attended school together. The new free public elementary, or common , schools, which after the American Revolution supplanted church institutions, were almost always coeducational, and by 1900 most public high schools were coeducational as well. Many private colleges from their inception admitted women (the first was Oberlin College in Oberlin , Ohio), and many state universities followed their example. By the end of the 19th century, 70 percent of American colleges were coeducational. In the second half of the 20th century, many institutions of higher learning that had been exclusively for persons of one sex became coeducational.

In western Europe the main exponents of primary and secondary coeducation were the Scandinavian countries. In Denmark coeducation extends back to the 18th century, and in Norway coeducation was adopted by law in 1896. In Germany , on the other hand, until the closing decades of the 19th century it was practically impossible for a girl to get a secondary education , and, when girls’ secondary schools were introduced, their status was inferior to that of schools for boys. At present in many large municipalities, such as Bremen, Hamburg, and Berlin, coeducation at the primary level is the rule; at the secondary level there has been little change.

Antagonism to coeducation in England and on the European continent diminished more rapidly in higher education than in secondary. In England, Girton College at Cambridge was established for women in 1869, and the London School of Economics was opened to women in 1874. Germany permitted women to matriculate in 1901, and by 1910 women had been admitted to universities in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Austria-Hungary, France, and Turkey.

Since World War II , coeducation has been adopted in many developing countries; China and Cuba are outstanding examples. There are many other countries, however, where social conditioning and religious sanctions have limited its success. In most Arab countries, for example, girls tend to drop out of coeducational schools at the age of puberty.

For years, a question many educators, parents, and researchers have been asking is whether or not it is academically beneficial to teach boys and girls together or separately at school. Some argue that coeducation has primarily social benefits, allowing males and females of all ages to become more prepared for real-world situations, whereas a student that is only familiar with a single-sex setting could be less prepared, nervous, or uneasy.

Admissions officers read thousands of essays each application season, and they may devote as little as five minutes to reviewing a student’s entire application. That means it’s critical to have a well-structured essay with a compelling introduction. As you write and revise your essay , look for opportunities to make your introduction more engaging.

There’s one golden rule for a great introduction: don’t give too much away . Your reader shouldn’t be able to guess the entire trajectory of the essay after reading the first sentence. A striking or unexpected opening captures the reader’s attention, raises questions, and makes them want to keep reading to the end .

Start with a surprise, start with a vivid, specific image, avoid clichés, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about college application essays.

A great introduction often has an element of mystery. Consider the following opening statement.

This opener is unexpected, even bizarre—what could this student be getting at? How can you be bad at breathing?

The student goes on to describe her experience with asthma and how it has affected her life. It’s not a strange topic, but the introduction is certainly intriguing. This sentence keeps the admissions officer reading, giving the student more of an opportunity to keep their attention and make her point.

In a sea of essays with standard openings such as “One life-changing experience for me was …” or “I overcame an obstacle when …,” this introduction stands out. The student could have used either of those more generic introductions, but neither would have been as successful.

Some students choose to write more broadly about themselves and use some sort of object or metaphor as the focus. If that’s the type of essay you’d like to write, you can describe that object in vivid detail, encouraging the reader to imagine it.

Cliché essay introductions express ideas that are stereotypical or generally thought of as conventional wisdom. Ideas like “My family made me who I am today” or “I accomplished my goals through hard work and determination” may genuinely reflect your life experience, but they aren’t unique or particularly insightful.

Unoriginal essay introductions are easily forgotten and don’t demonstrate a high level of creative thinking. A college essay is intended to give insight into the personality and background of an applicant, so a standard, one-size-fits-all introduction may lead admissions officers to think they are dealing with a standard, unremarkable applicant.

Quotes can often fall into the category of cliché essay openers. There are some circumstances in which using a quote might make sense—for example, you could quote an important piece of advice or insight from someone important in your life. But for most essays, quotes aren’t necessary, and they may make your essay seem uninspired.

Co education, as the word denotes, means education of boys and girls together in schools and colleges. When both the sexes receive education jointly, there is no need for separate institutions. This is obviously an advantage from the economic point of view since separate institutions and separate staff for those institutions will entail greater expenditure.

When free contact between the sexes is allowed and encouraged, there can be no sex-suppression on either side. It is a psychological fact that the segregation of the sexes leads to many complexes. The age of puberty is crucial for both boys and girls, and if they get no chance to meet one another they are tormented by unhealthy, morbid thoughts.

Boys will thus steadily develop a habit of talking decently and behaving in a gentlemanly manner. The mutual understanding engendered co-education also leads to recognition by men of the desirability of giving to women a high status in social life. Hitherto men have been only too ready to oppose any rights or privileges being conceded to women.

Another salutary effect of co-education is that it produces a healthy spirit of competition between boys and girls. Each sex makes efforts to excel the other. Both are therefore urged to a more fruitful intellectual exertion than is the case in separate institutions for boys and girls.

But co-education is not an unmixed blessing, and its drawbacks should be clearly recognised and guarded against the system has been bitterly criticized by many educationists. In the first place, men find it difficult to concentrate upon studies in the presence of women.

Again, there is a real danger that the free inter-mixing of the sexes at the age of puberty may lead to sexual misconduct Boys will aim at entangling girls, and girls may become the willing victims of unscrupulous boys. This sort of thing, besides being undesirable and improper in itself, has an adverse effect upon the discipline of an institution.

The needs of women are different from those of men. The same curriculum does not suit both the sexes. Boys and girls should not, therefore, be given exactly the same sort of education. If the list of subjects suitable for study by the two sexes are compared, the number of subjects common to the two lists may appear few.

Co-education in India has made considerable progress. It has already been introduced in most colleges. The number of girls in co-educational institutions nowadays is as large as that of boys.

This essay has a good strong introduction and is clearly organized. Congratulations too on your vocabulary, you use a good variety and most of it is accurate.

You might want to revise the difference between 'learn' and 'teach'. I'm not sure about the use of 'our boy' and 'our child' - I would go for the more neutral ' a boy' or 'boys'.

Likewise I would change the conclusion slightly, don't say that you hope parents make a good choice, keep it impersonal!

I think it was close. But let's look at the essay in more detail as there are rather a lot of inaccuracies for band 8

'question whether separate classes or mixed classes are better for our boys and girls' - a minor point, but stick to the question at hand in your intro- this is about schools not classes.

'with the same gender' = of the same
'in that age' = at that age
'behaviours' = behaviour
'better for the teachers' = easier for the teacher (the meaning is lost slightly here)
'having a possibility' having had the opportunity
'another gender' = the other gender/the opposite sex
'they learn children'= they teach children
'which will help them' = and this will help them (avoids confusion)
'I hope that they will choose the best option'= so it is vital that they give due thought to the matter/so it is essentially that they think about their schooling carefully.

Firstly if it is an opinion essay you may not give both argument. you should mention just one argument,whether you agree with the co-education or not. still i do not get that which side you are. besides it you have a good range of vocabulary

Mixed Schools versus Separate Schools

Some people think that it is better to educate boys and girls in separate schools. Others, however, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Certain group of society feels that it is beneficial for boys and girls to be educated in separate institutions, whereas it has an opponent view who trust and support both the sex studying under one roof. This is also called Co education. I think going to a mixed education school has a lots of benefit such as gaining confidence and not being shy, cost effectiveness, respect for women as well as being more responsible citizen. It has been observed that children who study at mixed gender school are more open and gains confidence as a natural phenomenon of being appreciated by opposite sex. Boys as being close to girls and vice versa gives a good opportunity to understand each other. This later on turns into respecting each other rather than being bias. Being attracted to opposite gender helps them to take ownership and eventually are being a bonhomie and responsible person. Single roof education reduces the cost of education as two different infrastructure is not required. My cousin is one of the best example. He was very shy when he was in boys school, however, after being admitted to a coeducational he in the virtue of showing himself special, he improved dramatically and today he is a confident and bonhomie person. Having said that, people will advocate in support of separate schools for genders for risk of being engaged and committing unfair activities. There has been several instances where boys or girls getting attracted to each other and impacted there studies. Others went into illegal relationship at very early age. This is true do we have any assurance that such acts will not happen if they study at separate school. The answer is no. In conclusion, despite of some drawbacks and risk what a coeducation may have, can not defeat several advantages. Therefore in my opinion, I agree to the thought that coeducation is more beneficial for boys and girls. *** You can post your comments on this essay below.

Requesting your time to review the following essay of mine. It will be very helpful, if you could shed some light on areas to improve. I need band 7 in writing which seems elusive at the moment. Some people think that it is better to educate boys and girls in separate schools. Others, however, believe that boys and girls benefit more from attending mixed schools. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion Worldwide education is given utmost importance as it play's pivotal role in shaping an individual. In today's educational system, school's role is considered vital. Some argue that the schools for boys and girls should be separate while others refute this opinion. Both sides will be argued with reasoned analysis before reaching a conclusion. The social environment has many sections of society with different upbringing. For example, in traditional countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Yemen, it is more common to see separate schools for boys and girls rather than mixed schools. This might be due to the social framework in these countries. It is argued by many in these countries that girls should be protected from males. To avoid any undue incidents, such as love affair or physical contact between boys and girls which might result in bad reputation for a family in their society. May be, this could be one among many reasons for some to argue that boys and girls should have separate schools. On the other hand, modern societies often consider mixed schools as an opportunity in building a better individuals out of their kids. For instance, students from mixed schools tend to be more outspoken, not being shy while being around opposite sex. Girls learn, how to be bold in expressing themself from boys. Likewise, boys get an idea of commitment and politeness from girls. These attributes would help both boys and girls in their adult life, including personal and professional fronts. Thus, it can be seen, why some prefer mixed schools to be advantageous. In conclusion, after a detailed analysis of both the sides of this argument, the positives obtained out of mixed schools outweigh the concept of separate schools for boys and girls. It is predicted that the co-education schools would be preferred more in the coming years.

I think if you are not getting a 7 yet you are very close. It's generally a good essay - well organised with some interesting arguments to support it and some good vocab.

You could maybe try and put another argument in your first body paragraph as it only has one (and shorten the first part of that paragraph as this does not answer the question).

But I think it is possibly your grammar that is preventing you getting a 7.

It is pretty good, but there are quite a few minor errors such as missing articles.

"the majority" of sentences must be error free to get a 7 for grammar, which is difficult to achieve. You have quite a few minor errors, so it may be that the majority are not error free when you are in the test.

So you really need to focus on that.

I think you should be able to get the score you need soon though.

As you had used apostrophe 's' with material things whereas as per the rule of conjugation of pronoun, one should use such apostrophe with living thing only. Advantages and disadvantages of co-education

Have you ever thought about the advantages and disadvantages of co-education? Well, in this article, we will cover all the advantages and disadvantages of co-education system.

The topic of co-education has always been popular in our society. There is always a positive as well as a negative side to co-education, while there are more advantages and fewer disadvantages. Co-education is a schooling system where girls and boys are taught together under the same roof, in other words, we can call it mixed-gender education.

The idea of a co-education system was introduced back in the 1830s when it was decided that girls and boys would study and learn alongside. Since then, this co-education system has been adopted by many developing countries and they highly encourage it because they think it helps in developing the personality of men and women which is later quite helpful for them as they enter the real world.

Advantages of co-education

1. better communication skills.

It is widely known that it is an important factor that kids develop communication skills from a young age and there is no better way than a co-education system that would help kids in building the skills that they need. Co-education plays a huge role in this as it allows the children to talk to people of any gender with ease. If kids are not given this opportunity, then it would affect them in the longer run as it would be difficult for them to interact with people and communicate with them.

2. Preparing for the real world

Co-education can be the perfect tool of shaping young minds for the real world in the long run. No matter where they go, men and women must be in constant contact with one and another throughout in the corporate world. By experiencing this at an early age they will find it much easier having to build relationships and work with the opposite genders.

3. Gender equality

We live in a time where gender equality is an important factor no matter what people say or do. Co-education provides an environment where children from an early age tend to learn about these things which help them in shaping their minds. They are taught and treated in a way that is healthy for them as it promotes equality from the very start of their education. Children that are taught in such an environment tend to be more respectful as they grow up and appreciate the opinions of opposite genders and think that they all are equal.

4. Healthy Competition

Competition is always there no matter if you’re a kid or an adult and it is a key factor in our lives. Healthy competition in an education system plays an extremely vital role as it helps the kids to deal with success or failure in school life or later in the corporate real world. Be it working in a team together for a project, preparing for a presentation or working alone, it can help in overcoming the barriers of shyness and create a rather comfortable environment. It would help the pupils and motivate them to share their ideas or opinions with a group of people without any fear. It would help in creating a balanced environment.

5. Breaking down barriers

Stereotypes have always been a huge problem in every society. These stereotypes cause issues for boys and girls in specific roles, but co-education systems can help in diminishing these barriers. For example, some girls would not be offered to work with robots or electrical cars as they are seen to be for boys, similarly boys would be discouraged to take the subject of fashion and textile or food nutrition as they are seen something for girls but these things don’t matter in a co-education system as whether it is a boy or a girl, they all are treated the same way and are encouraged to take similar subjects or take parts in activities.

6. Mutual understanding and respect for the opposite gender

Some recent study revealed that children behave in a much more decent and civilized way when they are taught in a co-education school. Co-education is a key part of building the characters of these kids, both girls and boys. These things emphasize, focusing on how important it is for children to respect and listen to the opposite genders, it also helps in developing and creating a better understanding level that eventually helps in reducing any kind of discrimination regardless of any gender.

7. Offering diversity in schools

If young boys and girls are exposed to diversity at an early age, it will be super helpful as they grow up, it would be much easier for them to adapt into different environments. This kind of set up offers to be in teaching styles that portray other forms of diversity such as social barriers or different cultures.

8. Improving teamwork

With the help of co-education schools, it helps the students to work and do assignments together. This not only helps them while they are young, but it also helps them when they grow up to be in the corporate world. Male and female both will gain confidence in working with the opposite genders, not only this, but they get to share their share of ideas with each other that will help to improve their thinking ability and learn to respect other people’s opinions even if they differ from one another. Exchanging ideas will boost their confidence and thinking level.

9. Developing self-esteem

As you all know, self-esteem is extremely important, and it must be built in a good way at an early age. Co-education systems are the best solution for this. Children must go to a co-education school as this will help in building their self-esteem, it is a place where they will meet and face people with all types of personalities which would be beneficial for them as they grow up, it will not only boost up their self-esteem but will also teach them to respect each other’s self-esteem. This would help the young minds to step out of their comfort zone confidently.

Disadvantages of co-education

Though the advantages weigh way more than the disadvantages of the co-education systems, every system has its good and bad sides. Hence, here are a couple of disadvantages of co-education.

1. Unwanted arguments/fights causing unhealthy environment

Since both these genders have different schools of thought, arguments are bound to happen. If the arguments are not handled in a proper manner, then it may cause an unpleasant environment for the students which might take a toll on their mental health as well as their behaviors. Thus, it will divert the attention of students from concentrating on their studies.

2. Lower concentration level

Studying together may cause a lower level of concentration in the studies as younger minds are known to be easily diverted into other things so this may have an adverse effect on the studies of the children.

3. Less confidence

Some kids may not be confident enough to speak up in the class in front of their classmates. They might not be able to perform well, hence this would cause issues in participating in class projects, presentations or even asking questions. Kids might not feel comfortable with the opposite gender being in the class which would affect their studies badly.

4. Limitation of resources

Co-education systems mean that there will be more pupils in classes which will put a high strain on the resources available at the institutions which are already very limited. Due to this reason, it will cause quite a lot of problems for the performance and results of the students.

5. Early relationships

Students are likely to spend most of their time in school, which means that opposite genders have plenty of time to interact with each other, this can lead to engaging in relationships. Students at an early age are immature or careless and indulging into unethical relationships may cause some serious problems.

6. Unethical activities

As young students are immature, there is a high chance of risk that these students end up indulging in unethical activities or crimes that can destroy their future. Such unethical activities can be anything from flirting to lying or stealing to parents or early affairs. One of the biggest and most serious issue is sexual harassment in these institutions. Many cases are registered of sexual assault.

Despite all the advantages and disadvantages of co-education, it is still growing rapidly in most parts of the world. It totally depends, if we start to take things in a more positive way only then will we achieve fruitful results. We are the ones who need to teach and train the minds of people that co-education is productive for our society.

To conclude, co-education is an excellent system which will help our children in all spheres of life. It will not only help build up their confidence but also in their all-round development which would benefit them in the real world.

Co-Education means educating boys and girls or both genders together in one education system, under one building and in same institution.  In the recent times some of our colleges, schools and universities have adopted this concept.  A lot of people favor this system of education but also there exist some minds who do not accept this system.  Co-education is common concept in European and other developed countries but this concept is not as much popular in Pakistan.  In Pakistan a small number of colleges have adopted the co-education.  People in Pakistan believe that co-education leads girls and boys to wrong concepts of leading life.  However, there are some other people who believe that co-education can bring a healthy competition in girls and boys.  This can be beneficial to both genders mutually so we should adopt it. 

Co-education and social intelligence:

It would not be wrong to say that this is the basic need of time to stand both genders together.  In the present era no development is possible without even one of these genders.  Both boys and girls are equally important for development in any sector of the country.  We should not deny that boys and girls have to live together in the society so we should prepare them in advance to survive with each other.  Co-education is very important for understanding social progress. Social progress can be defined as the capacity of a society to meet the human needs of its citizens and allowing them to enhance the quality of living.  No society can progress without competition.  If we will not allow boys and girls to compete with each other we will not be able to develop social intelligence in them. 

Co-education, a controversial issue of our country:

There is no doubt that co-education has been a controversial issue of our country since after the partition.  There are some people who encourage this system of education and want to introduce in our country.  There can be many arguments to favor the co-education.  The major reason to support co-education in Pakistan is in a backward and financially ill country it is impossible to maintain separate education for both genders. Co-education will be proved good for the progress of the country, enhance the standard of education and develop as sense of competence in students. 

But there also exist some arguments in defaming co-education which include: in country like Pakistan sex consciousness develops in early ages.  So it would not be wrong to say that co-education may lead to the lack of concentration in studies.  Because opposite genders attract each other so they lose interest and concentration in education.  Also there exists sexual harassment in co-education based institutions.  In co-education there are more chances of distractions, enethical activities and more interest in personal feelings. 

Advantages of co-education:

A good education system is considered to be progressive if it give equal value and respects to both genders.  As co-education plays a vital role in social intelligence.  Co-education system can also be named as mixed-sex education.  In co-education boys and girls learn to develop a sensation of mutual respect.  In under developed countries like Pakistan sex discrimination has reached its peak.  Co-education can be helpful in overcoming the fear of opposite gender.  Co-education will also result in healthy competition and develops the sense of self-esteem among genders. 

Almost all the countries of the world have accepted the concept of modernism.  Modernism can be defined as transfer of dogma to facts.  In this modern era we should understand that development of girls is as much important as boys.  So we should introduce co-education in order to encourage their survival in the future.  Co-education develops many mentionable characteristics in human personality which include character enhancement, denouncing discrimination on the basis of gender, developing a sense of competition in boys and girls, maintaining resources and promoting a controlled environment.

It will not be wrong to say that some people support co-education because they want to adopt western culture.  There is a need to understand the difference between modernism and evil.  There is no doubt that west has adopted co-education and we can copy them too.  Co-education is not a form of evil.  It is just a getting education by the cooperation of your opposite gender.  Anything can be demonstrated wrong if it is used for the evil accomplishments.  And even a wrong thing can be right if it is done for the sake of someone’s benefit.

Here, I am not supporting or defaming the co-education.  My opinion is that co-education under a controlled environment and good administration of college, universities and schools will be proved beneficial in the development of country.

Conclusion:

To conclude, co-education is an excellent system of promoting education equally among mixed genders.  No country can lead to progress unless both girls and boys work together for it development.  So, we should promote co-education under a controlled system.  It is important to develop all-round characteristics of kid’s personality as it takes away the fear of interacting with the opposite gender.  Moreover, co-education prepares them for a world where they can work in all kinds of environment without being hesitated.

Co-eduction is a system of education where girls and boys are educated together. The practice started in Greece and is now becoming common all over the world. The feeling of gender equality is inculcated and it boosts their social skills and self-esteem. It allows them to compete with each other and learn from each other. It makes the students understand that no sex is superior to others. It prepares the children for the adult life. They can share their ideas and thoughts with each other.

The practice of co-education first started in Greece. The world’s oldest co-educational school is Archbishop Tenison’s Church of England High School, Croydon. It was established in 1714 in Surrey (now in South London). During the Middle Ages in Europe, co-education was rare, and most education took place in monastic and religious institutions. Co-education became more prevalent in universities and colleges during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The fight for women’s right and increased gender equality further promoted co-education. By the mid-20th century, co- education became common in primary and secondary school around the world including India.

While co-education is widely accepted, debates continue about the best practices for fostering equality and inclusivity in educational settings. Co-education is an important step towards promoting gender equality in education and society.

Co–education in India has been present since ancient times in the form of the Gurukul system of education, where students of all genders received education in the same place under the guidance of a guru or teacher. During British colonial rule, gender-based education became more common, with separate schools for boys and girls. This separation was mainly due to social norms prevalent at that time. After India gained independence in 1947, co-education started to regain popularity. The Indian government promoted co-education as a means to promote gender equality and social integration. In India majority of the colleges and university departments are now co­educational. While co-education is widely practiced, disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes still exist in certain parts of India, particularly in rural areas. After the enactment of the Right to Education Act in 2009 it was made compulsory for educational institutions to provide equal opportunities to students of all genders.

The supporter of Co-education basically favor the Co-Education system for two factors i.e. Sociological and Economical factor. The various benefits of co-education are described as follows:

  • The students get exposed to diversity at a young age, so they find it easier to adapt to diverse environments which reduces gender biases.
  • It promotes co-existence by promoting social and communication skills.
  • They study in a healthy environment consisting of both the sexes, that improve their communication skills. It motivate them to excel in academics and in extracurricular activities.
  • It help in developing mutual respect for each other and the holistic development of a student’s personality.
  • Studying together in co- education helps overcome hesitation and shyness to talk to the opposite sex as they study in a friendly environment together.
  • In co education both male and female point of view or perspective is explored and thereby provides healthy learning environment and broaden their horizon.
  • It reduces the burden on the government to provide resources and infrastructure to the state with more school. So it is a cost effective method.
  • It reduces gender stereotype and resultes in better social grouping by working together in the same environment.
  • It results in the character development of an individual.
  • Co-education helps in developing the habit of team work.
  • Co-education promotes gender equality and reduces gender discrimination.
  • It helps create a more inclusive and equal society by ensuring that education is accessible to all, regardless of gender,

Co-education has various benefits but it also has some disadvantages, depending on specific circumstances and the way it is implemented. Some of the disadvantages of co-education are as follows:

  • Coeducation can result in distraction, especially during adolescence, as students are more interested in socializing with members of the opposite sex than in studying
  • It can result in unequal participation and opportunities for students of the opposite sex as some courses or activities may be dominated by one gender.
  • Safety of the girl student is of major concern in the co-educational institutions. Cases of sexual assault and harassement in these institution requires proper policies.
  • Some cultural norms and beliefs are against co-education. They restrict their daughters to study in the co-educational institutions.
  • Some students feel shy and uncomforatble in co-learning environment for personal and cultural reasons.
  • It can result in unhealthy competition between both genders, which may not form conducive environment for learning.
  • It reduces the options for schools and colleges for the students of both genders.
  • It can result in unwanted agruments and discussions that can form unhealthy environment.

Co-education provides both advantages and disadvantages. It results in deveolping mutual respect for the opposite sex, reduces gender dicrimination and enhances social and comminication skill and prepare the students for the real life world. However, it can also lead to less concentration, social pressure and reinforce gender stereotype. Its implementation depends on culture, proper management, and the ability to address needs and challenges of mixed learning. Finally the choice should be madedepending on the values and specific goals of students and an educational institution.
