How to Add a Custom Font to your Video

Having downloaded your royalty-free fonts for your video, how do you use?.

We will be demonstrating this process using Animotica , our video editing software. Animotica is an easy-to-use, feature-rich video editor suitable for both beginners and pros. Download it here .

If you’ve downloaded and installed the software, let’s proceed with adding custom fonts to your video.

Step 1: Go to Settings and Open the Search Box

In the search box, enter Font. A pop-up will appear. From the list, select Font Settings .

You should be taken to the window shown below.

Step 2: Import your Font(s)

First, from the list of font families we have in the first section, download your preferred typeface (it comes as a zip file containing all the fonts available). Open the zip file and extract it.

Next, select all the fonts within the folder, except the OFL document. You can select them at once by holding the control button while tapping on each of them.

Having selected them, hold down the ‘select’ button and drag the fonts to the settings icon.

You will be taken to the settings window. Do NOT release the button until you have dragged the fonts to the “font box,” as shown below.

Wait a few seconds while the fonts get uploaded. You can use the search box to see if you successfully uploaded them.

Animotica is already open on your system, please close and reopen it for the new font to reflect.

Step 3: Open Animotica and Upload your Project Files

Open Animotica and select New Project . On the new window, hit Add Video/Photo Clips.

Select Add Video or Photo Clip , navigate to where you’ve saved your files, select them, and hit Open .

Now you have something to write on. Let’s get our new fonts!

Step 4: Locate and Use your New Fonts!

Click on the Add button and select Add Text. Input your text and hit the X button afterward.

On the bottom panel, hit Font and navigate to the Font option. You can now scroll up or down until you find and select your imported fonts.

Voila! You just added your new font!

Choosing the right font can seem like an impossible task. There are so many things to consider. What is the font going to be used for? What message are you trying to send? Is the font readable? Does the font include special features? Combine these questions with virtually unlimited font choices, and you’ll find your head spinning.

Different styles of fonts serve different purposes. Bold, blocky fonts are typically used for titles or headings. Script fonts are used for creative projects such as invitations, posters and apparel. Finally, there are fonts that work well as body copy. Body text is your longer text that usually appears in paragraphs. Because this text can be anything from a few words to millions of pages, legibility is very important. If a viewer is going to spend longer that a few seconds reading your text, you need to make sure that you’re providing a great reading experience. We’ll take a look at some tips for choosing the right fonts for longer bodies of text and I’ll also make some recommendations for fonts that you can use for your next project.

A Little Spacing Goes A Long Way

One of the biggest mistakes people make when working with longer blocks of text is not using correct spacing. The spacing between lines, paragraphs and characters can be the difference between fomenting being easy to read or impossible to read. Often, people space text and element to close in an attempt to save space, use less pages or get in some extra information in a small area. I get it. Sometimes you have one word left over, and you really don’t want to create a widow and orphan situation. But, there is no reason to cram all of your body text into a small area.

Reserve The Decorations For Parties And Special Events

As graphic designers, we tend to be creative people. I love adding a bit of flair and pizzaz to everything. There’s a time and a place for the fancy had-lettered fonts. Your body text is neither the time nor the place. Using a decorative font to signify a chapter or section header can be a really nice visual break and keep everything from appearing as a never-ending wall of text. Using a decorative font as the default font for your body will be impossible to read and put a lot of strain on the viewers eyes. It will also take up significantly more space than using a clean font designed for long works of text.

Font Pairing Is Still Important

Making your text easy to read is your top priority, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add some variety to your text. We’ve already mentioned how using decorative fonts for chapter and section headers can be useful, but there are some other situations where mixing things up is a great idea. If you have subsections throughout your text, you can implement some font pairing. For subsections, you wouldn’t want to make them decorative, but you would want to find a way to distinguish between the subsections and the body text. You can also use the font in body copy as a replacement for Times New Roman, Verdana, or Arial. Futura harks back to the past and is something that has survived for so many years.

The typeface is simple while also being artistic enough to meet expanded uses.

Due to its retro look, Futura is great for retro and vintage designs for artwork and jewelry themes. Perhaps Futura will also look good as a movie documentary font.

Merriweather font was designed to be a text face that was to be pleasant on the screen. It features a large height and condensed letterforms, with diagonal stress, and sturdy serifs with open forms.

The Merriweather sans is a sans-serif version that harmonizes with the weights and styles of the serif family.

It’s a low-contrast font which is extremely pleasant to read at small sizes. That’s why it’s ideal for computer screens. Merriweather Sans gives you the feeling that it’s something old even with the modern shapes adopted for the screen.

Currently, there are 8 styles ranging from Light, Regular, Bold, Extrabold in both Roman an5d Italic styles.

Best for light-hearted and uplifting content.

The Pluto font family was designed by Hannes von Dohren in 2012. The clear Sans serif family is based on Pluto architecture and has a friendly feel over the quirky bits that Pluto conveys. Compared to Pluto, Pluto Sans feels less loud.

The geometric forms and the large height is great for long texts in small sizes and usage in print and on-screen. But Pluto Sans and Pluto have the same range of weights and styles.

Pluto Sans is great for complex professional typography and the open type fonts have an extended character set to support central and eastern European as well as Western European language. Each font has alternate letters, fractions, lining, tabular numbers, and more.

How to Add Custom Subtitle Fonts with VEED

This is the step-by-step guide to help you with subtitles and translations inside VEED . VEED helps you to automatically add closed captions with the subtitle generator in just a few clicks.

1. Unzip the ZIP file

Start by unzipping the ZIP file containing your font, if needed. For reference, fonts look like this:

To add subtitles, upload the video that you want to add subtitles to. You can simply drop in a Dropbox link, upload files to your PC or add YouTube video links.

6. Pick Between Auto, Manual, and File

Go to the subtitle button in the left-hand toolbar and choose from automatic subtitles, manual subtitles, or subtitles from an external file. VEED accepts these filetypes: SRT, ASS, VTT, and SSA.

7. Verify and Check Accuracy of the Subtitles

Once you pick the subtitle or the closed captions you need to verify them for accuracy. You can also translate your subtitles to any language with VEED. In the Translate tab, you can see the language drop-down menu. Choose your language and VEED translates these subtitles for you.

8. Download the Final File

Hit the export button on the top right-hand corner to download your video.

How To Style Subtitles with VEED

1) under subtitles in the left toolbar, go to styles.

Once you have generated the subtitles, click on Styles under the subtitle editing panel. You get a drop-down menu to choose your custom font from.

At this point, you customize your subtitle color, backdrop, line height, and letter spacing for better readability. In the next section, we’ll talk about formatting.

Here are advanced VEED subtitle editing tools , go to the subtitle button in the left-hand toolbar and click on styles.

You get to choose from a number of options, beginning with fonts to letter spacing.

2) Change Font from Choices on VEED or Upload your Branded Fonts

To get the best subtitle you need to compare different fonts. The good news is: VEED supports a number of fonts. All you need to do is test them out with a PRO account.Another option is to upload custom fonts. You can use branded fonts as well.

Regardless of choice for subtitles, the text must be easy to follow especially on lower resolution screens.

You need a balance between aesthetic fonts and readable fonts.

Tap the drop-down menu that suits the project best. I’d recommend exporting a few videos with a few fonts to find out what you ideally want.

3) Font Size and Color

On the styles menu, you can choose the sizing for the font. Go to the T-shaped icon right next to the font size drop-down menu. Pick a color from the palette, add a hex color code or use the pipette tool to select a color from your video.

4) Alignment

To add the alignment of the text, go to the styles tab once more and then access the second row.

You get three options to adjust the alignment. Choose the desired option.

5) Letter Spacing, Case, and Line Height

To adjust letter-spacing or line height add the desired numbers and VEED does that for you automatically. You can also choose from lower case, capitals, or camel case.

6) Add Different Effects

To add effects go to the effect selector under the text styling options

Just tap on the chosen effect to apply.

Best Practices to Format Readable Subtitle Fonts for Video

Picking the right font is only half the work. The next thing you need to do is format things so that what’s written is easy to read without being too distracting or fading into the background.

Alignment: Align the subtitle text to the left. Avoid positioning text on the far left or right as well as the upper or bottommost part of the screen which may cause your text to get chopped off the srceen.
Font size: The captions should be big enough to be understandable to the viewer without making them squint or so massive they take up the whole screen.
Font color: High contrast color choices are perfect to make sure people can read your subtitles.
Video resolution: Make sure to export your video in a high enough resolution so things aren't pixelated (and therefore hard to read).
Video background: The video background shouldn’t clash with the font color. Hide distractions behind the text. You can also add a background color to fix this and add contrast.

Ready to pick a font for your next video?

There are two different ways with which you can add subtitles to your YouTube videos. The first thing you can do is use auto-generated captions or spend time creating subtitles manually.

Here’s the step-by-step breakdown of how to add subtitles. You can use VEED to add subtitles to your social media videos like those posted on YouTube.

Upload the created YouTube video to VEED
Once the video is uploaded go to subtitle options and click on auto-generated subtitles to get your subtitles.
This will generate the subtitles and add them to the video
Click on export to get the final video

Here’s how to translate video subtitles:

The best Prime Day tablet deals are difficult to find among the deluge of discounts that are drowning shoppers at Amazon.

Instead of scratching your head over which tablet deal is worth it — and which ones are worth skipping — wouldn't it be nice to simply ask an expert, someone who knows tablets, to help you make sense of it all? As it turns out, you're in luck. I happen to review tech for a living, including laptops, phones, and, of course, tablets.

I know which tablets are worth grabbing (i.e., the iPad Pro ), as well as the ones you should pass on (like the new iPad Air ). That being said, here are the best Prime Day tablet deals . (While you're at it, check out our Prime Day tech deals hub , which was also curated by an expert.)

Best Prime Day 2024 tablet deals

This list, curated by a tablet expert (i.e., yours truly), will contain a mix of both iPad and Android tablet deals. Based on my expertise, this list will only contain the best tablet deals.

11-inch iPad Pro (M4)

The latest, newest iPad Pro has dropped down to $919 on Amazon from its original price of $1,000.

Here are three reasons why I recommend the new iPad Pro, according to my testing:

It's the thinnest Apple product ever, making it super light, ultra-portable, and travel-friendly

The battery life, tested by Mashable, is out of this world

Mind-blowing performance that beats some laptops

To dive deeper into these three points, Apple boasted that its latest iPad Pro is thinner than an iPod Nano. But when I actually got a chance to play with it, as I mentioned in my review , it was like holding the whispers of technology in my palms.

Next, the battery life is incredible. I ran a TikTok rundown on the 13-inch iPad Pro, and to my surprise, it lasted 16 hours and 24 minutes on a single charge. With the 11-inch iPad Pro sporting the same M4 chip, it should offer a similar runtime.

And finally, after running some benchmarks, the iPad Pro has incredible performance, so much so that it even beats some MacBooks and PCs. The only downside I noticed during my testing, however, is that the iPad Pro can run hot while running some intensive tasks (e.g., gaming). Plus, if you want to transform your iPad Pro into a laptop-like setup, I suggest upgrading to the 13-inch model and pairing it with Apple's Magic Keyboard.

Lenovo Chromebook Duet

This one is an oldie, but a goodie — and it's just $189 at Amazon , as of this writing. Lenovo, by the way, is one of the most respected laptop vendors in the world as the mastermind behind the ThinkPad line.

I own a Chromebook Duet — and it's the one of the best budget tablets on the market, particularly if you often work with the Android ecosystem. Here's why I recommend the Chromebook Duet:

It has a budget-friendly price tag of less than $200

It has a battery runtime of about 9 to 10 hours

Great for Google-focused workflows

The above selling points speak for themselves. The Chromebook Duet won't break the bank, and it delivers killer battery life. But keep in mind that it has ChromeOS built into its system, not Android, so this device is best for users with Google-focused workflows.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+

If you're a casual artist, or you love to take notes, the Galaxy Tab S9 FE is my best recommendation for you. It's down to just $398 on Amazon for Prime Day from its original price of $600.

Here are the three reasons I suggest it:

It ships with an S Pen

Decent battery life (compared to similarly priced tablets)

Sturdy, waterproof build

Many tablets out there support styli (yes, styli is the plural of stylus), but they don't ship with an actual pen. The Galaxy Tab S9 FE, on the other hand, does come with the S Pen included, so you don't have to worry about purchasing one separately. On top of that, it's one of the best Android tablets (perhaps next to its pricier Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra sibling).

According to our sister site PCMag (we share the same parent company, Ziff Davis), the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ lasted about 8 hours on a charge (which isn't half bad compared to similarly priced competitors). My only caution is that this is a mid-range tablet, so its performance is not built to support heavy graphics rendering. If you want a turbocharged Android tablet, I suggest getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra instead.

OnePlus Pad

I highly suggest the OnePlus Pad, which is down to $369.99 for Prime Day from its original price of $480.

OnePlus is beginning to catch the attention of consumers who often only flock to Apple, Google, and Samsung for their mobile needs. After getting glowing reviews for its smartphone efforts, OnePlus is now getting praise for the OnePlus Pad. Here's why I recommend it:

It has a striking, vibrant, 11.6-inch, 2800 x 2000-pixel screen

Loud, booming speakers

Decent battery life

According to our sister site PCMag , OnePlus lasted about 8 hours on a charge. That's certainly not as long as the 16-hour iPad Pro, but it should be able to last an 8-hour work or school day. It also has a slick Android skin, punchy audio, and a gorgeous display. One thing to consider, however, is that the OnePlus Pad may not be able to keep up with more intensive workflows.

Samsung Galaxy A9+ Plus

The Samsung Galaxy A9+ Plus is another tablet I recommend, and it only costs $142.49 on Amazon for Prime Day (down from $220).

Here's why I suggest it:

Budget-friendly, giving you a lot of bang for your buck

Great software that facilitates productivity

Punchy speakers

Despite being less than $150 at Amazon, the software on Galaxy A9+ is seamless for anyone who wants to get light work done on it. As PCMag pointed out, it sports some "productivity boosters," including a hideable taskbar, the ability to use multiple apps at once, and easy sharing of media between other Samsung devices.

If you own a Samsung phone, the Galaxy A9+ Plus is my recommendation if you're seeking a wallet-friendly, smooth-and-seamless Android tablet.

Or you could write a piece that’s specifically for senior women leaders in STEM who need to improve their presentation skills.

“It might seem like that article is too narrow,” remarks Grayson Riegel, “but the more specific you are, the more your message will cut through the clutter and get to your ideal readers.” Understanding the needs, preferences, and pain points of your readers will help you create content that resonates with them. Tailoring your message to your audience ensures that your writing is relevant and impactful.

Choose The Right Platforms

Choosing the right platforms to share your writing is crucial. Blogging and creating content for LinkedIn are excellent ways to showcase your expertise and engage with your audience. This allows you to create and share content that is both engaging and SEO-friendly.

Guest posting and contributing to industry-related websites and magazines can help you build credibility and reach a broader audience. Look for opportunities to write for established publications in your field to expand your visibility and authority. Contributing to high profile publications can significantly enhance credibility. But that doesn’t have to mean Harvard Business Review, Forbes, or The Wall Street Journal. In her Writing and Publishing for Coaches and Consultants course, Grayson Riegel teaches participants to identify the high-profile publications that their potential clients are reading. For example, one of her clients coaches fundraising professionals, so getting published in the Chronicle of Philanthropy was a better fit (and an easier in) than trying to get into The New York Times.

If video is your medium, guess what? You still need to be an excellent writer. Research shows that video has emerged as “the king of content,” and so your content needs to be well-planned and well-written.

All videos start with a script, or at least a series of bullets to spark your speech. In an interview , Ann Handley, author of Everybody Writes , said, “No matter what form your content ultimately takes, it always starts with a story, and it starts with being able to articulate that through some concise and cogent writing.”

Grayson Riegel, who has over 110,000 subscribers on YouTube, concurs. “Building your video brand is one of the best ways for your clients and prospects to get a three-dimensional picture of who you are and why they’d want to buy what you’re selling. Those three dimensions could be boring, disorganized, and useless if you haven’t planned what you’re going to say. Or they could be engaging, motivating, and captivating.” That comes from good writing.

Develop Your Writing Style

You might be thinking that generative AI has solved the writing challenge. After all, isn’t ChatGPT your full-time ghostwriter?

ChatGPT and writing-focused GPTs, like Write for Me , are powerful tools for supporting your writing, but they don’t remove you from the process. Finding your voice is essential in developing your writing style. Authenticity is crucial in writing because it builds trust with your audience. Develop your unique writing style by being honest, sharing personal experiences, and writing in a conversational tone. To build a following or fans, being a skilled/differentiated writer is essential and understanding exactly how and when to use AI is a must. Grayson Riegel teaches her clients to use AI as a thought-starter, but not as the end product. For example, she suggests, “You can ask ChatGPT to generate a list of 10 reasons why managers are reluctant to give feedback to their direct reports. But then it’s your job to cull that list down to the top 3-4 reasons that would resonate most with your readers and then populate those reasons with your own examples, evidence, and experience.”

Create Valuable Content Consistently

Thought leadership pieces allow you to share your perspectives on industry trends and developments. Writing opinion pieces showcases your expertise and establishes you as a thought leader. And sharing personal stories helps you connect with your audience on a personal level, building relatability and trust. Focus on content that delivers value to your ideal audience.

Consistency is one of the three critical Cs of branding (clarity and constancy are the other two). It’s the key to building a strong personal brand. Maintain a regular writing schedule and ensure consistency in tone, style, and messaging across all your content. This helps create a cohesive brand identity that your audience can recognize, relate to, and trust.

Grayson Riegel’s consistent approach to writing and publishing has contributed to her bottom line. “A single article that resonates with my prospects and clients can become a webinar or a workshop, then a keynote, then a self-paced online course,” she shares. “I’ve written several pieces that have generated five- and six-figures worth of business alone.”

And in order to know if your content is hitting—or missing—the mark, encourage interaction with your readers. Invite them to comment, share, and discuss your content. Responding to feedback and engaging in conversations helps build a relationship with your audience. Use writing to foster a sense of community around your brand and encourage reader contributions and guest posts. Grayson Riegel says you know you’re doing something right when your core audience reaches out to you with a topic and says, “I think you should be writing about this!”

Finally, measure the performance of your writing efforts. Track metrics like views, shares, comments, and conversions to understand what works and what doesn’t. Gather feedback from your readers and make improvements based on their responses. Stay updated with industry trends and new writing tools and adjust your content strategy accordingly.

On Friday afternoon, Sneh Zala, 24, waited for celebrities to arrive on the red carpet for the wedding ceremony of Anant Ambani, the youngest son of India’s richest man, and Radhika Merchant, a daughter of a fellow business tycoon.

The red carpet was set up in a room adorned with lanterns and red and orange garlands and floral arrangements. Mr. Zala, a photographer working for Manav Manglani , one of Bollywood’s top paparazzi, had already shot several of the couple’s prewedding functions, which began in March .

It’s not every day that Kim and Khloé Kardashian, John Cena and Boris Johnson gather in Mumbai for an Indian wedding. All four were in attendance on Friday at the Jio World Centre in traditional Indian garb.

Mr. Zala was one of about 100 media members clamoring next to the red carpet, not a common addition at most weddings. But given the sheer number of celebrities present — Bollywood superstars, several members of the Indian cricket team, former prime ministers and billionaire businessmen — and the fabulous Indian clothes on display, a runway seemed in order.

When Mr. Cena came out wearing a baby-blue sherwani, one photographer shouted, “Welcome to India.”

What type of font is good for videos?

After making videos for over a month now, I've been getting criticisms about how boring my choice of font is for my videos, a design detail I never even thought about.

My font is a sort of Arial-ish font that's rounded out on the tips called "Comfortaa", where it's not too special and it's pretty typical. It looks like this: http://img.fontspace.com/preview/charmap/78b20d84f8f2914b72b7d13ac557491b.png

I usually colour the font and the outline it with a white outline - however, many have been saying that my text font is just too bland and a turn-off for new viewers of my videos.

Unless you're making your viewers read paragraphs I'd stick to a nice sans font with squared tips. This is, of course, all my opinion.
