Funding & Scholarship: Graduate Programs

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,004 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the classes entering in Fall 2024 and beyond : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. For more detailed information, please visit the following pages: GSAS Tuition and Fees  G SAS Financial Support for PhD Students

External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the  National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program  and  National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) .

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies.  Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding.   In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

Currently, PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive.  PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship.  PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000.  The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided. This policy is subject to review and change.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for independent grants and fellowships to fund their studies.  Information about tuition and fees can be found here . Students in our Computational Science & Engineering or Data Science programs-should visit this page and also may contact the  GSAS Financial Aid Office  to learn more.

Students in the  MS/MBA:Engineering Sciences program  are eligible to apply for need-based  HBS Fellowships  and student loans in both years of the program.

International Applicants

Applying From Abroad

We welcome applications from all over the world. Our admissions and financial aid processes are the same for all applicants - regardless of nationality or citizenship.

Frequently asked questions

How do international students apply.

The application requirements are the same for all applicants whether a student attends high school inside or outside the U.S. All first-year candidates must complete the   Common Application  or the   Coalition Application   along with the required supplements. We have no preference and each application is treated equally by the Admissions Committee.   View our detailed application requirements here .

Do I have to take the TOEFL?

A strong knowledge of English is essential for successful study at Harvard, including the ability to understand and express thoughts quickly and clearly. First-year and transfer applicants are not required to take an English proficiency exam, but you may submit scores if you wish to do so. Visiting Undergraduate Students program applicants are required to take the TOEFL.

Are there quotas for international applicants?

There are no quotas or limits of any kind at any point in the admissions process. All students are considered in the same pool for all places in the incoming class, regardless of citizenship or the secondary school they attend. A student's chances for admission and financial aid are not affected by citizenship or by the location of the school that the student attends.

Does Harvard offer admission application fee waivers to international students?

We are committed to making the application process accessible for all students. If the admissions application fee presents a hardship for you or your family, the fee will be waived. You can request a fee waiver directly through the Common Application or the Coalition Application, Powered by Scoir, if you meet their respective indicators of economic need. If you do not meet these indicators, please follow these instructions to learn how to get your fee waived . Requesting a fee waiver will not disadvantage your application in any way.

Will Harvard provide travel expenses for international students who receive financial aid?

All students, American and international, who are on financial aid have a travel allowance included in their financial aid award to help cover the cost of travel to and from Cambridge. Overseas students are advised to seek information from the nearest U.S. Cultural Affairs Office about travel grants and other financial assistance available to qualified students from various foundations and from the U.S. government.

Common Questions

We are often asked by prospective students, “Do you count me as an international applicant?”  Because all applicants follow the same procedures and timetables and are eligible for the same financial aid, we do not need to categorize individual applicants as either international or domestic.  We have foreign citizens applying from American high schools and American citizens applying from high schools around the world.  When we refer to “international admissions,” we are generally referring to applicants who apply from schools outside the United States as the documentation submitted by those schools may differ substantially from that submitted by an American high school and may require specialized knowledge.

Please note that we do not have quotas or limits based on either citizenship or location of high school. Furthermore, admissions decisions are made without regard to whether an applicant has applied for financial aid, even if the applicant is a foreign citizen.

The Harvard Club of the UK has created a  website to answer specific questions  for those applying from the United Kingdom. You may find it a useful source of supplemental information.

Financial Aid

Our  financial aid policies  are the same for all applicants, regardless of nationality or citizenship. All aid is based on financial need, and admissions decisions are made without regard to whether an applicant has applied for financial assistance. Harvard meets each student’s demonstrated need.

Standardized Tests

Harvard will accept the SAT or ACT to meet the standardized testing requirement. In exceptional cases, when those are not accessible for a student, one of the following can meet the requirement:

  • AP exam results
  • IB Actual or Predicted Scores
  • GCSE/A-Level Actual or Predicted Results
  • National Leaving Exams Results or Predictions

English language proficiency examinations such as the TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo cannot be used to meet the standardized testing requirement, though students are welcome to submit them for review as part of their application materials.   Students may self report their standardized test scores.  If the cost of taking the SAT or ACT is of concern, keep in mind that both the College Board and ACT provide fee waivers to some domestic students from low-income families. Students who are non-US citizens attending secondary schools outside the US are not typically eligible for SAT or ACT fee waivers. If applicants are ineligible for fee waivers, but still face financial hardship in paying for a SAT or ACT, the Admissions Committee still encourages these students to apply. We encourage students in this situation to take and submit results from other standardized tests to which they have greater access. For instance, students lacking access to the SAT or ACT may submit AP or GCSE results, IB/A-level/other national leaving exam predictions or results.

More information about standardized testing is included on our  application requirements  page.

English Language Proficiency

A strong knowledge of English is essential for successful study at Harvard, including the ability to understand and express thoughts quickly and clearly.  Although you are not required to take an English proficiency exam (such as the TOEFL, IELTS, etc.), you may submit scores if you wish to do so.

Translated Materials

If you choose to provide translated versions of your academic credentials or letters of recommendation, please note that you should not translate the documents yourself.  You do not need, however, to hire a professional translator.  We are happy to receive letters translated by an English teacher, for example.  All translations should include the name of the translator and his/her relationship to you.  A copy of the original (untranslated) document should always accompany the translated version.

International Students Financial Aid

The J.D. financial aid program is designed to help students from across the economic spectrum and around the world meet the expense of a law school education while preserving career choice options in the broadest range of law-related and public service fields. International students (any students who are not U.S. Citizens or non-citizens eligible for federal student aid) can apply for HLS need-based grant and loan assistance, and financial aid eligibility is determined using the same need-based approach that applies to students who are U.S. citizens. International graduates of the HLS J.D. program are also eligible to participate in the  Low Income Protection Plan .

The application for international students is substantially the same as that for domestic students. After you are admitted, we will email you directions to log into the  SFS Self-Service Portal , our secure online financial aid system. In the SFS Self-Service Portal you will submit the Student Application form, which will then create a personalized list of requirements. For more details on the application process, visit the  Apply For Aid Overview .

Student Budget and Need

International students have the same  standard student budget  as domestic students. Financial need is determined and aid is determined according to the same formula used for domestic students.

Aid Packages and Funding Options

Like domestic students, international students who demonstrate financial need in excess of the Grant eligibility threshold will see their provisional financial aid eligibility includes Grant eligibility. The School may also provide a limited amount of institutional loan funding for Grant eligible students, based on financial need.  The remaining cost, up to the standard student budget, can be financed with a loan from a private source. Our  Preferred Lender List for International Students  provides additional loan options with no U.S. cosigner required, and many other lenders offer loans to international students who have an approved U.S. co-signer.

UK Scholarships for International Students: A Complete Guide

The United Kingdom has long been one of the most popular study destinations for international students. With its world-renowned universities and vibrant academic culture, studying in the UK offers an incredible opportunity to gain a global perspective while earning prestigious degrees. However, the cost of education can be a significant barrier for many students. That's where UK scholarships for international students come into play, making it easier for students worldwide to pursue their academic dreams in the UK.

In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore various full scholarships for international students in the UK, focusing on undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities. Whether you're a student seeking financial aid, a parent supporting your child's education, or a counselor guiding students toward success, this blog will provide valuable insights into the various scholarships available, their benefits, and how to apply for them.

Why Study in the UK?

The UK is home to some of the world's oldest and most respected universities, such as the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Beyond its prestigious reputation, the UK offers a wide range of courses and degree programs across various disciplines, ensuring that students can find programs that match their career aspirations.

But why choose the UK over other countries? Let’s break it down:

  • World-class education : The UK has consistently ranked among the top global education providers, with its universities featuring prominently in international rankings. Degrees from UK institutions are recognized and respected worldwide, which can significantly boost your career prospects.
  • Cultural diversity : Studying in the UK exposes students to a diverse and multicultural environment essential for personal and professional growth. You will interact with peers from all over the globe, fostering global networks and learning about different perspectives.
  • Research opportunities : The UK is a leader in academic research, making it an attractive destination for those interested in postgraduate research and innovation. With access to cutting-edge facilities and esteemed faculty, students are encouraged to push the boundaries of their disciplines.
  • Work opportunities : The UK offers international students the chance to work while studying, and several post-study work visa options allow graduates to gain valuable work experience in the UK. This can be particularly beneficial for students looking to establish themselves professionally before returning to their home countries.

While these benefits make the UK an appealing destination, the high tuition and living expenses can deter many students. In such cases, scholarships to study in the UK can help to alleviate financial pressure.

Types of UK Scholarships for International Students

There are various scholarships to study in the UK, each tailored to different academic levels and fields of study. Here are the most common types of scholarships available for international students:

1. Full Scholarships for International Students in the UK

Full scholarships for international students in the UK are highly coveted because they cover the entire cost of tuition, accommodation, and sometimes even living expenses. These scholarships are often awarded to students with outstanding academic records, leadership potential, or unique talents, making them highly competitive.

This makes the scholarship attractive for students eager to make a significant impact in their professional fields.
  • Commonwealth Scholarships : Funded by the UK government, Commonwealth Scholarships are available for students from Commonwealth countries and cover tuition fees, airfare, and living expenses. How to Increase Your Chances of Earning a UK Scholarship

Securing a UK scholarship for international students is highly competitive, but several strategies can increase your chances of success. Here are some practical tips:

1. Start Early and Research Thoroughly

Begin your scholarship search well in advance, ideally a year before you plan to start your studies. Research various scholarships that align with your academic background, goals, and financial needs. Whether you're applying for a scholarship for a master's degree in the UK or a full scholarship for international students in the UK, starting early gives you the advantage of preparing strong applications.

2. Tailor Your Application

Avoid submitting a generic application. Instead, tailor your statement, essays, and other documents to each specific scholarship. Highlight your academic achievements, leadership roles, extracurricular activities, and how the scholarship will help you achieve your long-term goals.

3. Focus on Leadership and Community Involvement

Many scholarships, especially government-funded ones like Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships, prioritize candidates who have demonstrated leadership and community involvement. Highlight your leadership roles, volunteer work, or initiatives that have positively impacted your community.

4. Secure Strong Letters of Recommendation

Choose recommenders who know you well and can provide detailed and positive references. Whether you're applying for a scholarship for a master's degree in the UK or an undergraduate scholarship, strong letters of recommendation can significantly boost your application.

5. Proofread and Polish Your Application

Before submitting, proofread all your application materials to avoid grammatical errors or inconsistencies. A well-polished application reflects your attention to detail and professionalism, which can leave a positive impression on scholarship committees.

How to Write A Good Scholarship Application Letter

Filling in a scholarship application can be a daunting task. Here’s how to effectively approach the writing process to increase your chances of success.

1. Start with a Strong Opening

Your opening statement sets the tone for the entire application. Begin with a compelling introduction that grabs the reader’s attention right away. In addition, your opening should be memorable and aligned with the goals of the scholarship you are applying for.

2. Demonstrate Alignment with the Scholarship’s Mission

If you are applying for scholarships to study in the UK, discuss how studying in the UK specifically aligns with your personal and professional goals. Be extremely specific about how the scholarship will enable you to contribute meaningfully to your field or community.

3. Provide Clear, Concise Examples

Throughout your application, use concrete examples to support your statements. Avoid vague statements like "I am a hard worker" and instead show how you applied effort to achieve a specific outcome. If you are applying for scholarships meant for foreign students in the UK, you can describe how your international perspective will enrich your study experience and the broader academic community.

4. Focus on Your Unique Qualities

Reflect on what differentiates you from other applicants. Are there specific life experiences that shaped your perspective? Did you overcome challenges to reach your current academic standing? Highlight these unique aspects in a way that resonates with the scholarship’s values.

5. End with a Clear Vision

Conclude your application by outlining your future aspirations and how the scholarship will help you achieve them. Make sure to articulate your long-term goals. Discuss how the opportunity to study in the UK will equip you with the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact in your field or community. Ending on a strong note reinforces your commitment to making the most of the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria Breakdown

When applying for UK scholarships for international students, it’s important to understand the eligibility criteria, which can vary depending on the scholarship provider and program. Here’s a breakdown of the most common criteria:

1. Academic Excellence

Most scholarships prioritize academic achievement, so strong grades, research experience, and intellectual curiosity are key factors. Some scholarships may require a minimum GPA or equivalent academic performance to be eligible.

2. Financial Need

Many scholarships, particularly government-funded ones, are awarded based on financial need. Applicants are often required to provide proof of financial hardship or demonstrate that they would be unable to afford UK education without financial aid.

3. Leadership and Extracurricular Activities

Scholarships such as the Chevening Scholarship and Rhodes Scholarship prioritize leadership potential and community involvement. Applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to public service, activism, or leadership roles in their communities will stand out.

4. Specific Fields of Study

Certain scholarships are designed for students pursuing specific fields of study, such as STEM fields, arts, or social sciences. Be sure to check whether the scholarship aligns with your intended field of study.

5. Nationality or Country of Residence

Many scholarships are targeted at students from specific countries or regions. For example, Commonwealth Scholarships are specifically for students from Commonwealth nations, while GREAT Scholarships cater to students from specific countries.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Applying for UK Scholarships

While applying for scholarships, it's important to avoid common mistakes that could disqualify your application. Here are some key things to watch out for:

  • Missing deadlines: Scholarship deadlines are often months in advance of the academic year. Missing the deadline usually means missing the opportunity entirely, so it's crucial to stay organized and submit all materials on time.
  • Incomplete applications: Applications that are missing required documents, such as recommendation letters, transcripts, or personal statements, will typically be rejected. Double-check that all components of the application are complete before submission.
  • Applying for the wrong scholarships: Ensure that you meet all eligibility criteria before applying to UK scholarships for international students. Applying for a scholarship for which you do not qualify will not only waste your time but also drastically reduce your chances of success.

Alternative Funding Options for International Students

In addition to UK scholarships for international students, there are several alternative funding options available that can help cover the cost of studies for international students in the UK.

1. Student Loans

International students may be eligible for private student loans through various lenders. These loans typically cover tuition and living expenses, but they come with repayment terms that begin after graduation. While loans are not as desirable as scholarships, they can provide essential financial support for students who do not secure enough scholarship funding.

2. Grants and Fellowships

Several organizations offer grants and fellowships that cater to specific research areas, social causes, or fields of study. These grants may cover project expenses, research costs, or even travel expenses for students involved in specialized work. Fellowships can also stipulate living expenses while students focus on academic or research pursuits.

3. Assistantships

Graduate, teaching, and research assistantships are common in UK universities, especially for postgraduate students. These assistantships provide students with stipends, reduced tuition, or even full tuition coverage in exchange for work in academic departments. Assistantships also offer valuable work experience that complements students' academic pursuits.

4. Part-Time Work

International students in the UK are allowed to work part-time during their studies, up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays. This helps students cover living expenses, and although it doesn't cover tuition, it can be a valuable supplementary income source. Part-time work can also provide students with professional experience in their field of study.

Studying in the UK opens the door to incredible academic and professional opportunities, but the cost can be a significant barrier. Fortunately, numerous UK scholarships for international students are available to help make these dreams a reality. Whether you're seeking full scholarships, undergraduate scholarships, or postgraduate scholarships in the UK for international students, there are countless options to explore! Pursuing a PhD can be rewarding, but it often comes with the challenge of securing adequate funding, especially for international students. Understanding the Costs of a PhD

Before diving into the various funding avenues, it’s essential to understand the costs of pursuing a PhD. The expenses can vary significantly depending on the university and the country you choose to study. Beyond tuition fees, which can be substantial, we should also consider living costs, research expenses, and travel fees. It’s advisable to thoroughly research these elements as they contribute to the financial undertaking.

Another factor to consider is the unforeseen expenses of being an international student. These may include health insurance, student fees, and costs related to obtaining visas. Creating a comprehensive budget that reflects all potential costs is wise, providing a roadmap for your financial planning. Knowing exactly what you’re up against can help alleviate some stress when seeking PhD funding.

Finally, understanding the concept of opportunity costs is crucial. Working on a PhD often means forgoing a full-time job, which could have provided a stable income. Factoring in lost wages can give you a more accurate understanding of the financial impact of pursuing a doctoral degree. Awareness of these costs can lead to better funding options tailored to your situation.

Types of PhD Funding Available

PhD funding can come from various sources, each with its benefits and drawbacks. The most common types include scholarships, grants, assistantships, and loans. Scholarships are typically awarded based on merit or financial need and can cover many tuition fees. They do not require repayment, making them an attractive option for many students.

Conversely, government bodies or foundations often provide grants and may be awarded based on specific research projects or academic achievements. Similar to scholarships, grants are usually need-based and do not require repayment. Understanding the differences between these types of funding is critical to maximizing your financial aid potential.

Assistantships can be especially beneficial for international students as they provide funding and valuable experience. Typically, students will work in teaching or research roles in exchange for a stipend or tuition waiver. These positions help cover living expenses and enhance your resume by providing professional experience in academia.

Lastly, loans may be necessary for some students. While they can provide immediate financial relief, it’s essential to understand the long-term implications of taking on debt. Be sure to look into private and governmental loan options, carefully comparing interest rates and repayment terms.

Scholarships and Grants for International Students</h3>

Scholarships and grants are fantastic ways to secure funding for your PhD studies without incurring debt. Many universities offer scholarships for international students to encourage diversity within their programs. These can range widely in value, from partial tuition coverage to total funding, including living expenses. To find the best options, check university websites and external scholarship databases.

In addition, many governments and private organizations also offer scholarships to promote education among international scholars. Programs such as the Fulbright Program or government-sponsored scholarships provide valuable funding opportunities. These often come with stringent requirements, so having all the necessary documentation is essential to increase your chances of being awarded the funds.

It’s also vital to understand the application process for these scholarships. This often entails submitting essays, recommendation letters, and detailed academic records. Crafting a powerful narrative around your educational journey and future goals can significantly impact your application. Don’t forget to follow instructions carefully, as even minor oversights can jeopardize your chances.

Research and Teaching Assistantships

Research and teaching assistantships offer an excellent funding solution that lets you gain critical classroom or research experience. Typically, these positions require you to work a set number of hours per week, often under the supervision of a faculty member. This collaboration helps alleviate some of your financial burdens and fosters mentorship relationships.

Research assistantships often involve specific projects where you’ll contribute to the faculty’s work. This can be incredibly fulfilling, allowing you to delve deeper into your study area while providing tangible contributions to ongoing research. Additionally, this experience can help build your professional network, which is invaluable for future academic or career opportunities.

On the other hand, teaching assistantships usually involve leading discussion groups, grading papers, or even lecturing. This is an excellent experience for anyone considering a future in academia, as it helps you develop valuable pedagogical skills. It can also improve your public speaking abilities — a notable asset for any career path!

However, balancing these responsibilities with your studies can be challenging. Time management becomes crucial to ensure that neither your academic nor assistantship responsibilities suffer. Still, with adequate planning, assistantships can significantly enrich your PhD experience.

Loans and Other Financial Aid Options

If scholarships, grants, and assistantships don’t fully cover your expenses, turning to loans may be inevitable. However, it’s essential to approach this option with caution. Research various loans available for international students, ensuring you understand the terms, interest rates, and repayment plans. Government and private loan programs are designed for students fleeing their home countries to pursue education abroad.

Before taking out a loan, evaluate how it fits into your financial picture. Consider creating a detailed budget that includes potential income from assistantships, expected living costs, and tuition fees. This can help you make informed decisions when borrowing significantly.

Additionally, explore other financial aid options that could complement loans. Some universities offer work-study programs, which allow you to work on campus while studying. This option can help you reduce expenses while gaining valuable skills and experiences.

Tips for Applying for PhD Funding

Applying for funding can seem daunting, but breaking it down into manageable steps can make the process smoother. Start by creating a list of potential funding sources that fit your research interests and funding needs. Prioritize them according to deadlines and eligibility criteria, and allow ample application time.

An important tip is to tailor your application for each funding source. Writing a generic statement can diminish your chances of standing out. Take time to demonstrate how your research fits into the goals and priorities of the funding organization, highlighting your unique perspectives as an international student.

Don’t hesitate to seek feedback on your applications. Reach out to Scholar Den experts. A second set of eyes can catch mistakes you may have overlooked and provide a fresh perspective on your narrative. Networking also helps; sometimes, learning from the experiences of others can guide you toward more effective strategies.

Resources for International Students

Numerous resources exist to aid international students in navigating the challenging terrain of PhD sch. University websites often have dedicated sections for graduate funding opportunities, which can provide a comprehensive overview of what’s available. Additionally, many universities have an international student office to guide you to specific funding prospects geared toward non-local students.

Outside university resources, organizations like scholarden.com offer valuable information regarding international student scholarships and funding. Their guidance can be beneficial in understanding the nuances of each option and any specific requirements for international students. You can also find online databases that aggregate various scholarship opportunities, making the search process more efficient.

Lastly, consider engaging with academic communities online. Websites, forums, and social media groups can provide insights and shared experiences from fellow international students who have successfully secured funding. Connecting with others in your situation can offer valuable funding information and emotional support as you navigate your academic journey.

Final Thoughts on PhD Scholarships for International Students

In conclusion, securing funding for your PhD as an international student may seem daunting, but many resources and strategies are available. Whether you explore scholarships, grants, assistantships, or loans, the key is to research and apply early.
