Funding & Scholarship: Graduate Programs

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,004 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the classes entering in Fall 2024 and beyond : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the  National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program  and  National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) . 

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies.  Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding.   In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

Currently, PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive.  PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship.  PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000.  The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided.This policy is subject to review and change.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for independent grants and fellowships to fund their studies.  Information about tuition and fees can be found here . Students in the  MS/MBA:Engineering Sciences program  are eligible to apply for need-based  HBS Fellowships  and student loans in both years of the program.

Alfred K. Priest Fellowship dartmouth.edu Awards graduate fellowships for graduates of Dartmouth College who attend Harvard University. Awards are approximately $10,000 a year.

The Architectural League: Deborah J. Norden Fund archleague.org The Norden Fund awards a total of up to $5,000 annually in travel/study grants to students and recent graduates in the fields of architecture, architectural history, and urban studies. Applicants should submit in letter form a brief proposal (no more than three pages), which succinctly describes the objectives of the grant request and how it will assist the applicant’s intellectual and creative development.

American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) amscan.org The ASF will offer around $300,000 to outstanding American students, scholars, professionals, and artists for study and/or research in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. Fellowships of up to $23,000 are intended to support an academic year-long stay, and priority is given to students at the graduate level who need to spend time at foreign academic or research institutions. Grants of up to $5,000 are considered more suitable for shorter research visits, both on the graduate or post-doctoral level. Funding is available to candidates in all fields.

American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) Scholarships asprs.org ASPRS is pleased to offer fourteen awards totaling more than $50,000 in value. Available to both undergraduate and graduate student members of ASPRS and others, these resources have been generated with the intention of advancing academic and professional goals within the fields of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and related disciplines.

Edmond J. Safra Graduate Fellowship ethics.harvard.edu The Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics encourages teaching and research about ethical issues in the professions and public life. Its Graduate Fellowships support outstanding Harvard graduate and professional students who are writing dissertations or are engaged in major research on topics in practical ethics, especially ethical issues in areas such as architecture, business, education, government, law, medicine, public health, public policy, and religion.

Urban Land Institute Fellowship uli.org The ULI Kenneth M. Landscape Architecture Foundation Ignite Scholarship lafoundation.org/ Ignite is a multi-year program with three core components: an annual scholarship, summer internships, and ongoing mentorship. AIA Arthur N. Tuttle Jr. Graduate Fellowship in Health Facility Planning and Design aia.org Recipients are selected each year by a committee of AHA and AIA representatives on the basis of study and travel proposals submitted by young architects and graduate students in accredited U.S.-based architecture schools.

AIA/Alaska Scholarship Program aiaalaska.org Open to permanent residents of Alaska who are enrolled in a Master’s Program in Architecture. Applicants must submit a transcript, letter of recommendation from a faculty member, and a resume. Applications are available on the AIA/Alaska website.

AIA Diversity Scholarships aia.org The scholarship is awarded to high school graduates, college freshmen, and community college students from minority and/or financially disadvantaged backgrounds who intend to pursue a NAAB-accredited professional degree in architecture.

AIA/New Hampshire Scholarship Program aianh.org Open to residents of New Hampshire who are enrolled in a NAAB accredited Architecture program or a program in a related field, such as Landscape Architecture, Architectural History, Preservation, or Planning. Scholarships of $500 to $3,000 will be awarded. The application deadline is April 15th.

AIA/New Jersey Scholarship Foundation aia-nj.org Between $1,000-2,500, these awards are for residents of certain counties of Northern NJ. The application involves form, transcript, letters of reference, and a personal statement.

AIA/New York cfafoundation.org Lists a number of awards for both New York state residents, and others.

AIA/Eastern Pennsylvania Scholarship aiaeasternpa.org Possible scholarship assistance to qualified applicants currently enrolled in an accredited architecture program and who are serious about their long-term pursuit of licensure as a professional architect. The candidate must maintain legal residence within one of the following AIA Eastern Pennsylvania counties: Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton, or Schuylkill.

AIA/Northeastern Pennsylvania Scholarship luzfdn.org The NEPA Chapter of the AIA Scholarship Fund is open to any “local” area student(s) who have received their high school diploma, and/or received a 2-year Associate Degree and have been admitted into and are attending any NAAB accredited (or NAAB Candidate) Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture program. In this case, “local ” refers to any of the following counties in Pennsylvania state: Bradford, Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming. Candidates must also possess the will and the ability to successfully pursue a college career, and have the academic ability, talent, and economic need for assistance in meeting tuition expenses in pursuit of an architectural degree.

AIA/Rochester Scholarship Program aiaroc.org This scholarship is open to college students currently enrolled in an architecture program for the 2021 – 2022 academic year. The scholarship is open to student who have a permanent residence within the seven-county area of Allegany, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates counties, or Greater Rochester member-firm areas served by AIA Rochester. AIA/South Dakota Scholarship Program aiasouthdakota.org Open to residents of South Dakota involved as a full-time student at a school of architecture in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th-year level. Student must also be of good character and show above-average scholarship ability.

AIA/Southern New York Chapter Scholarship aiaroc.org Applicants must be a resident of one of the ten counties the AIA Southern New York Chapter serves (Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland (Southern), Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins) and must be enrolled in an architecture program. AIA/Wisconsin Foundation Out-of-State Study Scholarships aiaw.org The Wisconsin Architects Foundation provides $1,000 scholarships to Wisconsin students pursuing the study of architecture out-of-state. Students must have graduated from high school in Wisconsin to be considered for this award.

AIA/Wyoming Scholarship aia-wyoming.org Open to Wyoming residents or Wyoming high school graduates currently enrolled in a master’s program in architecture. To be eligible, students must have completed three or more semesters in a program leading to an accredited degree in architecture. For information, visit the website or call 307-632-4077.

Architects/Engineers Professional Network aepronet.org Various national scholarship funds administered through professional societies, including locally administered grants available for awards in each member’s local territory. National scholarships are awarded principally to students of architecture and engineering schools where the applicant’s studies principally emphasize practice management.

Bergmeyer Scholarship bergmeyer.com This scholarship intended for a designer who is working towards a career in Interior Design. The Bergmeyer Scholarship recognizes and supports leadership potential in the field of Interior Design and Architecture through a $2,500 award.

Carter Manny Award grahamfoundation.org The Carter Manny Award supports the completion of outstanding doctoral dissertations on architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society. Students must be nominated by their department to apply for the Carter Manny Award.

Connecticut Architecture Foundation Scholarship cafct.org Students who have completed two years in accredited undergraduate architectural programs or have been accepted into an accredited graduate program are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Applicants must have a Connecticut connection (residence, school, work, etc.) in order to apply. In recent years, the individual awards have ranged from $2,000 to $5,000, depending upon the funds available in that year.

Ehrlich Rominger Scholarship siliconvalleycf.org The Ehrlich Rominger Scholarship Fund was established by Mr. Joseph Ehrlich and Mr. Jack Rominger to assist with the education of future architectural professionals.

Graham Foundation grahamfoundation.org Awards approximately 100 grants and fellowships for the study of architecture. Their site contains an easily searchable database of all awards and does not ask marketing questions.

Indiana Architectural Foundation indianaarchitecturalfoundation.org Scholarships are available for students who are permanent residents of the state of Indiana and in an Architecture Degree program. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Jewish Vocational Service jvschicago.org Educational scholarship funds from grants administered by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for Jewish college and graduate students. Approximately $500,000 is available each year for full-time students, predominantly those legally domiciled in the metropolitan Chicago area, with career promise in their chosen fields. Assistance is available primarily for those with   FINANCIAL NEED who are pursuing careers in the helping professions. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $8,000.

Leo and Trinidad Sanchez Scholarship siliconvalleycf.org This scholarship was established by Gil Sanchez in memory and honor of his parents, Leo and Trini Sanchez, who emigrated from Mexico to the United States in the 1910s. Gil’s hope is that this scholarship will encourage and help further the education of young people seeking to become architects.

Graduate Research Fellowships: National Science Foundation nsfgrfp.org NSF Graduate Fellowships offer recognition and three years of support for advanced study to approximately 900 outstanding graduate students. Approximately 90 awards will be in the Women in Engineering (WENG) and Women in Computer and Information Science (WICS) components. Most tailored to Urban Planning and Design students.

How do international students apply.

The application requirements are the same for all applicants whether a student attends high school inside or outside the U.S. All first-year candidates must complete the   Common Application  or the   Coalition Application   along with the required supplements. We have no preference and each application is treated equally by the Admissions Committee.   View our detailed application requirements here .

Do I have to take the TOEFL?

A strong knowledge of English is essential for successful study at Harvard, including the ability to understand and express thoughts quickly and clearly. First-year and transfer applicants are not required to take an English proficiency exam, but you may submit scores if you wish to do so. Visiting Undergraduate Students program applicants are required to take the TOEFL.

Are there quotas for international applicants?

There are no quotas or limits of any kind at any point in the admissions process. All students are considered in the same pool for all places in the incoming class, regardless of citizenship or the secondary school they attend. A student's chances for admission and financial aid are not affected by citizenship or by the location of the school that the student attends.

Does Harvard offer admission application fee waivers to international students?

We are committed to making the application process accessible for all students. If the admissions application fee presents a hardship for you or your family, the fee will be waived. You can request a fee waiver directly through the Common Application or the Coalition Application, Powered by Scoir, if you meet their respective indicators of economic need. If you do not meet these indicators, please follow these instructions to learn how to get your fee waived . Requesting a fee waiver will not disadvantage your application in any way.

Will Harvard provide travel expenses for international students who receive financial aid?

All students, American and international, who are on financial aid have a travel allowance included in their financial aid award to help cover the cost of travel to and from Cambridge. Overseas students are advised to seek information from the nearest U.S. Cultural Affairs Office about travel grants and other financial assistance available to qualified students from various foundations and from the U.S. government.

Common Questions

We are often asked by prospective students, “Do you count me as an international applicant?”  Because all applicants follow the same procedures and timetables and are eligible for the same financial aid, we do not need to categorize individual applicants as either international or domestic.  We have foreign citizens applying from American high schools and American citizens applying from high schools around the world.  When we refer to “international admissions,” we are generally referring to applicants who apply from schools outside the United States as the documentation submitted by those schools may differ substantially from that submitted by an American high school and may require specialized knowledge.

Please note that we do not have quotas or limits based on either citizenship or location of high school. Furthermore, admissions decisions are made without regard to whether an applicant has applied for financial aid, even if the applicant is a foreign citizen.

Financial Aid

Our  financial aid policies  are the same for all applicants, regardless of nationality or citizenship. All aid is based on financial need, and admissions decisions are made without regard to whether an applicant has applied for financial assistance. Harvard meets each student’s demonstrated need.

Standardized Tests

Harvard will accept the SAT or ACT to meet the standardized testing requirement. In exceptional cases, when those are not accessible for a student, one of the following can meet the requirement:

• AP exam results 
• IB Actual or Predicted Scores
• GCSE/A-Level Actual or Predicted Results
• National Leaving Exams Results or Predictions

English language proficiency examinations such as the TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo cannot be used to meet the standardized testing requirement, though students are welcome to submit them for review as part of their application materials.   Students may self report their standardized test scores.  If the cost of taking the SAT or ACT is of concern, keep in mind that both the College Board and ACT provide fee waivers to some domestic students from low-income families. Students who are non-US citizens attending secondary schools outside the US are not typically eligible for SAT or ACT fee waivers. If applicants are ineligible for fee waivers, but still face financial hardship in paying for a SAT or ACT, the Admissions Committee still encourages these students to apply. We encourage students in this situation to take and submit results from other standardized tests to which they have greater access. For instance, students lacking access to the SAT or ACT may submit AP or GCSE results, IB/A-level/other national leaving exam predictions or results.

English Language Proficiency

A strong knowledge of English is essential for successful study at Harvard, including the ability to understand and express thoughts quickly and clearly.  Although you are not required to take an English proficiency exam (such as the TOEFL, IELTS, etc.), you may submit scores if you wish to do so.

While we try to make alumni interviews as widely available as possible, we are unable to interview all applicants. The absence of an interview will not adversely affect your candidacy. Please see our guide on what to expect after you apply for information on arranging an interview.

Translated Materials

If you choose to provide translated versions of your academic credentials or letters of recommendation, please note that you should not translate the documents yourself.  You do not need, however, to hire a professional translator.  We are happy to receive letters translated by an English teacher, for example.  All translations should include the name of the translator and his/her relationship to you.  A copy of the original (untranslated) document should always accompany the translated version.

Harvard has a number of programs for international students planning to study at Harvard graduate and professional schools. The present Graduate Degree Students Scholarships is part of the mentioned programs and it makes funding opportunities at Harvard University available for those meeting the eligibility criteria.

RCCHU encourages highly-talented graduates enrollment at Harvard University for pursuing their training at both Master and PhD levels. This call offers training possibilities in the graduate programs of Harvard schools and departments allowing to obtain a doctorate or master’s degree. Those candidates admitted at Harvard and awarded with an RCCHU Scholarship will become RCCHU Fellows and will enjoy the benefits associated to such status.

The scholarships can be enjoyed for one or more academic years depending upon annual renewal. Candidates must apply for an extension of the scholarship every academic year until they have completed their studies. Continuing students at Harvard willing to renew their RCCHU Scholarship must have performed satisfactory progress both in their studies and RCCHU activities.

The RCCHU and the Committee on General Scholarships at Harvard University will determine the amount and purpose of the award, which can be used to cover tuition fees. In the case the scholarship covers all annual expenses calculated by Harvard University, it will not be compatible with any other type of income or scholarship for the same studies. If it does not cover the total amount of these expenses, it can be combined with any other scholarship or funding, as long as it is compatible with the basis of this scholarship.

As a recipient of one of the RCCHU Grants and Scholarships you will need to travel with a J-1 Visa. Please, make sure that your department at Harvard will sponsor your J-1 Visa application in advance.

You are eligible to apply for one of the RCCHU Research Fellowships if you are a full-time faculty at one of our  Partner Universities and have been admitted at a Harvard School, Department or Center in order to carry out a research project. Exceptionally proposals from other positions always related to Partner Universities could be considered.

You are eligible to apply for one of the RCCHU Graduate Scholarships if you are a Graduate (licenciado/a, ingeniero/a, arquitecto/a, graduado/a, master) who enrolls in one of the Graduate Programs at Harvard University. Preference is given to students who have attended one of the RCC Partner Universities .

The Scholarships are awarded for one academic year, but recipients may apply for renewal.

Do I need to have an English Certificate? expand_more

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)  test scores are required from all individuals that wish to apply for any of our RCCHU programs when such requirement is included in the call.  Applicants are required to have a minimum score of  100  on the Internet-Based TOEFL and to submit the results to the RCCHU on or before the stated deadline in the corresponding call of each funding opportunity.

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship : The Liebmann Fellowships are available to support students who are currently enrolled in graduate degree programs in many fields, with an emphasis on scholarly endeavors. Applicants should have outstanding undergraduate records, demonstrated financial need, and U.S. citizenship.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships Fellowships : To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program at Harvard. Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Summer Grants : Eligible applicants for the Summer Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Grants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents.  Applicants are required to obtain Harvard transfer credit approval and must be continuing full-time students enrolled at Harvard University.

Rappaport Institute Public Policy Summer Fellowship : The Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston encourages graduate students to spend part of their careers in public service through a paid, 10-week summer internship in key state and local agencies in the Greater Boston area.

Weatherhead Center for International Affairs : The Center welcomes applications from graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in various disciplines whose research involves important international, transnational, global, and comparative national issues that may address contemporary or historical topics, including rigorous policy analysis, as well as the study of specific countries and regions outside the United States.

Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program (HSAFP) : The program was established, and is still intended, for mid-career professionals educationally disadvantaged by past laws and resource allocations in South Africa. Today, HSAFP seeks to expand its reach to institutions and organizations across South Africa in a continued effort to draw the broadest possible range of candidates for the program. International Students Financial Aid

The J.D. financial aid program is designed to help students from across the economic spectrum and around the world meet the expense of a law school education while preserving career choice options in the broadest range of law-related and public service fields. International students (any students who are not U.S. Citizens or non-citizens eligible for federal student aid) can apply for HLS need-based grant and loan assistance, and financial aid eligibility is determined using the same need-based approach that applies to students who are U.S. citizens. International graduates of the HLS J.D. program are also eligible to participate in the  Low Income Protection Plan .

Applying for Aid

The application for international students is substantially the same as that for domestic students. After you are admitted, we will email you directions to log into the  SFS Self-Service Portal , our secure online financial aid system. In the SFS Self-Service Portal you will submit the Student Application form, which will then create a personalized list of requirements. Student Budget and Need

International students have the same  standard student budget  as domestic students. Financial need is determined and aid is determined according to the same formula used for domestic students.

Aid Packages and Funding Options

Like domestic students, international students who demonstrate financial need in excess of the Grant eligibility threshold will see their provisional financial aid eligibility includes Grant eligibility. The School may also provide a limited amount of institutional loan funding for Grant eligible students, based on financial need.  The remaining cost, up to the standard student budget, can be financed with a loan from a private source. Our  Preferred Lender List for International Students  provides additional loan options with no U.S. cosigner required, and many other lenders offer loans to international students who have an approved U.S. co-signer.

UNSW offers a wide range of scholarships and awards to support international undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students commencing full-time study at UNSW. Some scholarships will provide a full or partial tuition fee payment, while others provide a stipend to assist with the costs associated with your studies. Students wishing to undertake postgraduate research study should contact the Graduate Research School.

Scholarships & Awards that require an Application

By submitting an application for the UNSW Scholarships for International Students Commencing Term 1, 2025 (PUCA1029) you may be considered for the scholarships listed in the below table. More scholarships may be progressively added to this list.

To apply for PUCA1029, please register an account in the Scholarship Application Online portal , or if you have already created an account, log in and submit your application. You can also access the Scholarship Application Online portal using the Register and Login buttons on the right side of this page.

*Please note this application will open on 1 September 2024 and close at AEST 11:59PM on 30 November 2024*

Additional Eligibility Criteria

• Must be an international student; and
• Have received an offer of admission* into an eligible program for Term 1 2025 by 30 November 2024.
• Undergraduate or postgraduate Letter of Offer (unconditional)
• Undergraduate or postgraduate Conditional English Package Offer (UEEC) - students must be enrolled in the UNSW Institute of Languages and successfully complete the program prior to commencing in Term 1 2025.

Selection Criteria

• Academic merit
• Leadership skills (school, workplace or community)
• Extra-curricular activities (sporting, cultural activities, volunteer/work experience)
• Reasons for undertaking studies at UNSW

You must provide evidence supporting the above criteria in your online application. Please refer to the Scholarship Application Supporting Documents for a detailed list of examples.

Unanswered application questions or claims without supporting documentation will not be assessed. Late applications/supporting documentation will not be accepted.

Eligible students who have received an offer of admission to UNSW will be automatically considered for the scholarships and awards listed in the table below. You do not need to submit any specific scholarship application or additional supporting documentation to be considered.
