Office of graduate and postdoctoral education, fellowships and funding.

Georgia Tech awards and coordinates numerous student fellowships – varying in value from a few hundred dollars that may be awarded on top of other funding such as an assistantship, to full fellowships that cover tuition, fees and pay a stipend.

Institute-level fellowships are managed by the Office of Graduate Education and paid via the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid and the Office of the Bursar . Most fellowships are awarded and nominated internally by schools, not by Graduate Education nor the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. There are also many school-level fellowships which are handled separately by individual academic departments.

The Office of Graduate Education administers Institute-funded fellowships such as the President’s Fellowship  and the Georgia Tech Institute Fellowship , and many others. For example, we manage externally funded programs such as the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program, Ford Foundation and Department of Energy fellowships. We work with colleges to facilitate internal competitions for ARCS Foundation Atlanta scholars, and nomination processes for Dolores Zohrab Liebmann , Gilliam fellowship for Advanced Study and Schmidt Science Fellows. We also work with Academic Deans from individual Colleges to facilitate selection processes for donor-initiated fellowships.

Fellowships vs. Scholarships

Fellowships:.

• Usually awarded for doctoral research.
• Merit-based; not need-based.
• Funding is typically meant to be used for tuition and fees but is sometimes discretionary for student awardees to use as they see fit.
• Often come with a stipend.

Scholarships:

• Awarded to students based on academic achievements, financial need, or a combination of both.
• Usually merit-based; sometimes need-based.
• Generally, funding must be applied directly to tuition and other related expenses.
• Do not include stipends.

Fellowship Opportunities

There are a variety of fellowship opportunities available to graduate students. The awards listed in this section are only a selection of those available.

Unless otherwise noted, many of the awards listed in this section are open only to U.S. citizens and/or U.S. residents. It is challenging for international students to secure fellowships because many are funded by the U.S. government and/or come with a U.S. citizenship requirement.

Most fellowships are largely tied to doctoral research, and many are heavily focused on STEM disciplines. There are more limited fellowship and funding options for master’s level students and programs. If you are a master’s level student, or are considering a master’s level program, you may be more likely to secure a fellowship if you are pursuing a research-based master’s degree.

We recommend students to explore fellowship opportunities available for a wide range of degree levels, disciplines, program types, etc., by accessing the fellowship databases below.

Fellowship Announcements

• Many fellowships are internally selected or nominated by a student’s faculty advisor or department.
• Graduate Education will circulate announcements to specific academic units, entire colleges, or campuswide.
• Some competitions will be listed within Georgia Tech’s InfoReady Review platform.
• Other announcements will first be circulated to the Graduate Coordinator’s email distribution list and then forwarded to students, as applicable.
• Students are also notified of funding opportunities via announcements in the biweekly GradBuzz e-newsletter that goes out to all currently enrolled graduate students.

Tax Resources for Fellowships

Georgia Tech is unable to provide tax, financial or advice, and therefore all questions regarding taxes should be directed to a tax or financial advisor. The website " Personal Finance for PhDs " may be useful.

Do I include my scholarship, fellowship, or education grant as income on my tax return (for U.S. citizens and residents for tax purposes ONLY)?

This IRS Interactive Tax Assistant will help you determine whether the educational assistance you received is taxable. If you attended more than one educational institution and the funds were used for expenses other than qualified education expenses, run the interview separately for each educational institution.

Is my fellowship taxable if I am a nonresident for tax purposes?

In general, U.S. sourced taxable scholarships, fellowships, and grants that do not represent compensation for services are not subject to withholding when paid to U.S. citizens and residents, but they are subject to withholding when paid to nonresident aliens. If you are not sure if you are a resident or nonresident for tax purposes be sure to consult your GLACIER account. If you do not have a GLACIER account, please put in a ticket at asc.gatech.edu for assistance.

The withholding tax rate for nonresidents for tax purposes is 30%. However, the withholding tax rate may be reduced to 14% (or a lower treaty rate) if you are a nonresident alien student, researcher, or grantee who is temporarily present in the United States with an "F," "J," "M," or "Q" visa, and the taxable amounts you received are either:

• Incident to a qualified scholarship to which section 117(a) applies; or
• Granted by certain types of organizations described in section 1441(b)(2).

If, immediately before arriving in the United States, you were a tax resident of a country that has an income tax treaty with the United States, then you may be eligible for benefits under the applicable treaty, such as an exemption from tax, with respect to your scholarship, fellowship, or grant, including a specified amount that represents compensation for services. In order to determine whether you are eligible for a tax treaty, please consult your GLACIER account. If you do not have a GLACIER account, please put in a ticket at asc.gatech.edu for assistance.

Any part of your scholarship, fellowship, or grant that represents compensation for services performed in the United States is subject to graduated withholding.

Grants are a type of gift aid which qualifying students do not have to earn or repay. Graduate students are not eligible for the Federal Pell Grant or the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG). Consider in-state tuition and tuition reciprocity

In-state tuition costs are generally much lower than out-of-state tuition rates, which can save students thousands of dollars in tuition costs each year. Additionally, many universities and colleges reserve scholarships and financial aid for in-state Georgia students, which can help reduce the cost of attending college.

How do you get in-state tuition?

In order to establish residency in Georgia to qualify for in-state tuition , an individual must have maintained legal residence in the state for at least 12 consecutive months prior to enrollment. Additionally, the individual must demonstrate that they have a purpose for living in Georgia such as employment. This can be demonstrated through documentation such as driver’s licenses, voter registration and tax returns. 

However, it is important to note that residency rules can vary by college, and some universities may have additional requirements. Students who are unsure about their residency status should contact the admissions office of the university in order to obtain further information. 

Does Georgia have tuition reciprocity? 

Georgia is a member of two tuition reciprocity agreements known as the Academic Common Market (ACM) and the Southern Regional Education Board’s (SREB) Electronic Campus Regional Reciprocity Agreement.  

The Academic Common Market allows students to attend out-of-state public institutions while paying in-state tuition rates. The specific programs of study must not be available in their home state. 

The SREB’s Electronic Campus Regional Reciprocity Agreement allows students to take online courses from public institutions in other member states at in-state tuition rates.

Medical School Fellowship 

• To encourage the education of physician-scientists, MD/PhD students receive the Harrison Physician Scientist Scholarship for medical school tuition and student health insurance while enrolled in the medical school curriculum. 
• MD/PhD students also receive an annual stipend of $29,000. 
• MD/PhD students will be responsible for paying for the remaining student fees assigned to their accounts each semester during MD enrollment. 

Graduate School Stipends

• A Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) that includes an annual stipend of $29,000 and student health insurance (both funded by the mentor). 
• Travel funding up to $1000 every fiscal year (funded by The Graduate School).
• Enrolled students who compete successfully for eligible individual, external predoctoral fellowships will be rewarded for their efforts in the form of a supplement of $5,000 above the current GRA stipend unless the external award is less than $5,000. 
• MD/PhD students are responsible to pay $25 in tuition and student fees assigned to their accounts each semester during PhD enrollment.
• MD/PhD students who choose to enroll at Georgia State University, Georgia Institute of Technology or the University of Georgia, for graduate school, will obtain the stipend amount allotted to students based on institutional policies and procedures. Stipend, tuition, student health insurance, and student fees will vary according to the program and institution.

Travel Funding

• An additional $1,000 is available per fiscal year to offset travel expenses for presentation of research findings at local, national, and international scientific / clinical meetings during the entire program regardless of the enrolled institution.

Graduate Degree Accelerator (formerly Graduate School Dean’s Award) Nomination Deadline in October 2024

The Graduate Degree Accelerator, formerly known as the Dean’s Award, is a mechanism to assist doctoral students in overcoming obstacles that may be hindering their progress toward degree completion.

Presidential Graduate Fellow Award Nomination Deadline in Spring Semester 2025

This prestigious, highly competitive award was established to recruit exceptionally qualified students to our doctoral programs. Nominations for this award are presented to the Graduate School by individual departments or interdisciplinary programs in late January.

The award consists of a $10,000 supplemental award added annually to graduate assistantships provided by academic units. The supplement is for four years. During that time The Graduate School will pay mandatory student fees, provide travel support of $1,000 per year, offer regular programming that emphasizes professional / leadership development, and host regular meetings with senior university leadership.

Presidential Fellows recipients must register for a minimum of twelve (12)  graduate  credit hours for the Fall and Spring semesters and nine (9)  graduate  credit hours if registered during the Summer semester. Additionally, Fellows are expected to engage in research under the guidance of their faculty mentor and take advanced-level courses.

Each new Presidential Fellow is required to prepare and submit an Individual Development Plan and a Mentor-Mentee Compact before the Fall semester of their second year.

The award consists of a $7,000 supplemental award added annually to graduate assistantships provided by academic units. Fellows will receive four years of support and must hold a departmental or extramurally-funded assistantship for the duration of the award. Fellows can serve as GTAs in any year of the award.

Graduate School Doctoral Fellows recipients must register for a minimum of twelve (12)  graduate  credit hours for the Fall and Spring semesters and nine (9)  graduate  credit hours if registered during the Summer semester. The Dissertation Completion Award (DCA) is designed to support doctoral students who are writing their dissertations and  expect to graduate in the academic year of the award . These awards enable students to concentrate on research and writing to ensure timely degree completion. Recipients will be required to register for 12 graduate credit hours, fall and spring semesters, and should have no teaching responsibilities during the award period.

The Graduate School provides travel funding for students presenting their research at conferences and professional meetings. Funds are awarded on a rolling basis.

Summer Research Grants for Doctoral Students Nomination Deadline in Spring Semester 2025

The Graduate School is pleased to offer competitive grants for doctoral students from any discipline to conduct research related to their dissertations. Funds may be requested for supplies, software, data collection or analysis activities, and other operating costs associated with conducting the research. Funds may also be used for specialized training opportunities that will enhance specific dissertation research activities. Funds may not be used for stipend or salary.

Summer Doctoral Research Assistantship Nomination Deadline in Spring Semester 2025

The Summer Doctoral Research Assistantship is designed to provide summer funding to doctoral candidates in the fine arts, humanities, and selected social science and professional programs administered by the Graduate School, so the students may focus exclusively on their dissertation research and writing. This award supports doctoral candidates who do not have other sources of financial support during the summer to enable them to move more quickly toward completion of their degrees.

Grants for Communication of Research and Scholarship Nomination Deadline in Spring Semester 2025

The Graduate School is pleased to offer the Communication of Research and Scholarship Grant to support graduate students who wish to communicate the results of their scholarship to non-academic audiences. The outreach and communication activities supported by this grant will both engage new populations with the research and scholarship done by UGA graduate students and provide opportunities for our students to develop and practice skills that will serve them in a range of careers. Activities may include, but are not limited to, school demonstrations, public presentations, game or video development, podcast recording, or creation of a smart phone application. The funds may be used for equipment, supplies, and other operating costs associated with your outreach or communication activities. Funds may not be used for stipend or salary.

Research Out-Of-State Tuition Waivers Nomination Deadline in Spring Semester 2025

The Graduate School awards a limited number of out-of-state tuition waivers to degree-seeking domestic students who are classified as non-residents for the state of Georgia through the Board of Regents’ Research and Comprehensive University tuition waiver program.  The Regents’ Research Out-Of-State Tuition (ROOST) awards are based on applicants’ academic performance and the recommendations from their graduate coordinators. The waiver lasts for one academic year and is renewed each term of that academic year, contingent upon recipients earning at least a 3.00 graduate grade point average based on twelve hours of graduate course work in the fall and spring semesters and nine hours of graduate level coursework during the summer. These awards waive only the non-resident portion of the student’s tuition. Students interested in being nominated for this award should contact the graduate coordinator of their major department. Being nominated does not guarantee receipt of a waiver. Students must have a 3.5 GPA to be nominated the following year. If student has an assistantship at the time of candidacy and later needs the out-of-state tuition waiver, the student must submit the Application for Waiver of Graduate Out-of-State tuition form in Grad Status before the start of the term in which the waiver is needed.

Out-of-State Tuition Waivers for Candidacy Nomination Deadline in Spring Semester 2025

Doctoral students who are admitted to candidacy will automatically be granted an out-of-state tuition waiver by Graduate School staff if they do not have an assistantship waiver. The waiver will be effective the semester following the semester in which the student is admitted to candidacy (must be admitted prior to the last day of classes). If student has an assistantship at the time of candidacy and later needs the out-of-state tuition waiver, the student must submit the Application for Waiver of Graduate Out-of-State tuition form in Grad Status before the start of the term in which the waiver is needed.

Master’s students who are required to submit a thesis to the Graduate School are eligible for an out-of-state waiver after all courses on the program of study have received a grade with the exception of 7000 (research) & 7300 (thesis writing). A program of study form must be on file in the Graduate School. All students in this category must submit the Application for Waiver of Graduate Out-of-State Tuition to the Graduate School by the last day of classes for the semester prior to the eligible semester.

College’s grad programs climb to no. 4 in new u.s. news rankings.

Every engineering graduate degree at Georgia Tech remained in the top 10 nationally in the annual assessment.

For the fourth consecutive year, the College of Engineering moved higher on the widely watched U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Programs list, landing at No. 4 in the updated rankings released June 18 .

Georgia Tech is tied with the California Institute of Technology in the fourth spot. The College’s new ranking puts it second among public universities.

Among specific disciplines, the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering maintained its place as the nation’s No. 1 program for the 34 th year in a row. The Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering rose two spots to No. 2.

Also at No. 2: the biomedical engineering graduate program jointly operated by Georgia Tech and Emory University (the College also features an interdisciplinary bioengineering graduate program). Civil engineering remained at No. 3.

The 2024 Best Grad Schools rankings mark the 13 th year with every program in the College in the top 10 of their discipline. Most rankings were unchanged from last year’s list.

U.S. News   releases graduate school rankings each spring.   Their evaluation of engineering as a whole is based on a number of factors, including research expenditures and publications, peer and recruiter assessments, and doctoral degrees awarded. Rankings of specific engineering disciplines are based solely on peer assessments by department heads.

In the fall, U.S. News ranked the College’s undergraduate programs the best among public universities and No. 3 overall.

Pat Kelsey Impressed By Louisville's First Month of Summer Workouts

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The first of the game of the 2024-25 college basketball season is still over four months away, but the Louisville men's basketball program is already hard at work gearing up for the first year of the Pat Kelsey era.

Late last month, all 13 newcomers were officially announced by the Cardinals, and the baker's dozen slowly made their way to campus over the next few days. The program as a whole then officially kicked off summer workouts during the first week of June.

Over the course of the program's first full month together, the new head coach of the Cardinals has so far been pleased from what he has seen from his players.

"I think these guys going hard as crap every day," Kelsey said Thursday in his first press conference since being formally introduced in late March. "They're working hard. That's one of the things we hang our hat on, is competing. We compete in June, we compete in July, we compete in the preseason, we compete in practice in January and February. That is always at the center of what we do."

The players' efforts in the weight room hasn't been the only thing that Kelsey has been impressed with over the program first month together as a full team. Not only did he commend the entire roster for their buy-in and being "completely open and accepting" to the culture that Kelsey is trying to establish, he has seen several players start to step forward as leaders in their own way.

"With an older group, savvy veteran guys, they've all they've been successful where they been," Kelsey said. "They come from good programs and good coaches. They all, I would say, lead in their own ways.

"Some guys are a little bit more vocal. J'Vonne Hadley, for instance, I'm picking him out because you hear his voice a lot. Then there's other guys that lead more by what they do in their example. The guys that are in the gym earlier, that are in their late, how they go about their business. I like to think we have a team full of guys that lead, and that lead in different ways."

While Louisville does have a roster almost entirely of newcomers, Kelsey's first team with the Cardinals is one that is chock-full of collegiate experience. In fact, of the 13 scholarship players on the roster, eight of them are entering their final year of eligibility.

Even though the team has only formally been together working out and practicing for a month, they already have a clear understanding of the goal for the upcoming 2024-25 season: win.

"It's a very mature team," guard Reyne Smith said. "Most of us have one year left, and you kind of get this vibe that everyone's in it to win, and that's the most important thing. We've all got one year, so this is it for all of us. We want to make a run in the NCAA Tournament, and that's kind of the goal in mind throughout every workout, and just every day."
