The Ganesha idol was reportedly discovered by children.
Devotees bring bells to the temple after their wishes have been granted.
The Sautadka Mahaganapati Temple, where Lord Ganesha is enshrined in an open area, is believed to be able to fulfil the wishes of devotees. Located near Kokkada on the route from Dharmasthala to Subramanya in Dakshina Kannada district, the temple is about 17 kilometres from Dharmasthala. It serves as a major centre of devotion for the faithful, surrounded by rows of bells and a serene atmosphere, with Lord Ganesha standing amidst nature. The close proximity of the deity allows devotees to worship with deep devotion, and many believe that all their troubles will be resolved through such worship. The Ganesha idol in this open shrine was reportedly discovered by children who were grazing cattle in the area. These children used to offer whatever food they had to Ganesha, and this simple act of devotion led to the place being named Sautadka. According to legend, if a temple were to be built for this Ganesha, it would have to be as tall as the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and should be made within 24 hours, which is why Ganesha remains in the open.
The simplicity of the Sautadka Mahaganapati Temple extends to the offerings made here, where instead of the usual offerings of silver or gold, devotees are required only to offer a bell. This unique practice has become a special service at the temple. Devotees bring a bell to the temple after their wishes have been granted, with more than a hundred bells being offered in a single day.
Bells of various sizes, ranging from small ones to those weighing up to 100 kilograms, are offered as a form of gratitude. After their desires are fulfilled, devotees return to the temple to offer a bell, following the tradition of marking the end of their difficulties by hanging a bell at the temple. The numerous bells at the temple serve as a testament to the troubles that have been resolved for the devotees. It is said that around 11 tonnes of bells are offered to the temple each year.
During Ganesh Chaturthi, special rituals and prayers are performed at the temple, attracting thousands of devotees. The offering of Avalakki (flattened rice) as prasad is a distinctive service here, with many devotees participating. Continuous Rangapooja is conducted, and the prasad is also offered to the monkeys that visit the temple.

About Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala
800 years ago, Dharmasthala was known as Kuduma in Mallarmadi, a then village in South Kanara. Here lived the Jain Chieftain Birmanna Pergade and his wife Ammu Ballalthi in a house called Nelyadi Beedu. Simple, pious and affectionate people; the Pergade family was known for its generosity and hospitality to all.
According to legend, the guardian angels of Dharma assumed human forms and arrived at Pergade’s abode in search of a place where Dharma was being practiced and could be continued and propagated. As was their habit, the Pergade couple hosted these illustrious visitors with all their wherewithal and great respect. Pleased by their sincerity and generosity, that night the Dharma Daivas appeared in the dreams of Shri Birmanna Pergade. They explained the purpose of their visit to him and instructed him to vacate his house for the worship of the Daivas and dedicate his life to the propagation of Dharma.
Asking no questions, the Pergade built himself another house and began worshipping the Daivas at Nelyadi Beedu. This continues even today.
As they continued their worship and their practice of hospitality, the Dharma Daivas again appeared before Shri Birmanna Pergade to build separate shrines dedicated to the four Dharma Daivas – Kalarahu, Kalarkai, Kumaraswamy and Kanyakumari. Also, Pergade was instructed to choose two persons of noble birth to act as the Daivas’ oracles and four worthy persons to assist Shri Pergade in his duties as the Executive Head of the shrines. In return, the Daivas promised Shri Pergade family protection, abundance of charity and renown for the ‘Shri Kshetra’.
As ordained, Shri Pergade built the shrines and invited Brahmin priests to perform the rituals. These priests requested Pergade to also install a Shivlinga beside the native Daivas. The Daivas then sent their vassal Annappa Swamy to procure the Idol of Lord Manjunatheshwara from Kadri, near Mangalore. Subsequently Shree Manjunatha Swamy temple was built around this idol.
Around the 16 Century, Shri Devaraja Heggade invited Shri Vadiraja Swami of Udupi to visit the shrine. The Swamiji gladly came but refused to accept Bhiksha (food offering) because the idol of Lord Manjunatha had not been consecrated according to the vedic rites. Shri Heggade then requested the Swamiji to re-consecrate the shiva linga himself. Pleased by the observance of the vedic rites and Heggade’s charity to all, the Swamiji named the place Dharmasthala the abode of religion and charity. Thus, the roots of charity and religious tolerance established by the Pergades 800 years ago have been nurtured and strengthened by twenty one generations of the Heggade family, (Heggade being a derivative from Pergade). Today’s Dharmasthala blossoms with the fruit of this selfless dedication.

Dharmasthala
Situated 75 Kms. East of Mangaluru, set in sylvan surroundings on the lower slopes of the Western Ghats, this well known pilgrimage center is an interesting amalgam of faiths. The Manjunatha Temple is a prominent Shaivaite Center, that has Madhwa Vaishnavaite priests and is administered by a hereditary Jain family, the Heggades. The Jain influence can be seen in the 39 ft. statue of Bahubali, erected in 1980 on the hill near the temple. Opposite the temple is the Manjusha Museum which houses a wide rage of objects, including ancient scripts on palm leaves, silver jewellery and religious statuary. Charity is a way of life here and pilgrims that throng the temple are given free food in the temple. During the annual festival, Laksha Deepotsava held in November-December, one lakh lamps are lit and literary and religious discourses are held.

A Trip to the Temple Town of Dharmasthala
November 29, 2017 by madur
Dharmasthala, the beautiful temple town of Sharmasthala lies in the banks of River Nethravathi. To be precise, it is located in the Belthangadi district of the Dakshin Kannada region of Karnataka. It is a famous panchayat village that sees tourists and pilgrims with religious sentiments flock in huge numbers from the neighboring towns and cities.

The sound of prayers, the essence of incense sticks and bells ringing in temples are like music to the traveler’s soul. Not just Hindu Gods, but a number of shrines of other deities can be found as well. Here, you will find Brahmin priests as well as Jain administrative units. Dharmasthala is thus, an epitome of religious tolerance.
Significance of Dharmasthala
Legend has it that the famous Shiv Ling of the place was actually brought to the area by Annappa at the time he used to work with the Heggade family. Apparently, when the Heggade was worshiping Lord Shiva, Annappa promised to get a linga there and he vanished to complete his task. The next morning, people woke up to find the linga established just a few meters from the Heggade’s home.
There is another interesting tale associated with the naming of the town. Somewhere around the 16 th century, Shri Vadiraja Swamy was invited from Udupi by Shri Devaraja Heggade to visit the town.
However, he refused to have food as the offering because Lord Manjunatha’s idol had not been erected yet as per the Vedic rituals. Shri Haggade asked Swamy to lay the Shiv Linga foundation himself. Seeing the commitments, rituals, and prayers around this, Swamy was impressed and he named the town Dharmasthala or the abode of religion and charity.
Things to do at Dharmasthala

As the name suggests, this temple is dedicated to Manjunathaswamy, who is believed to be a form of none other than Lord Shiva. Its pyramid-shaped roof is remarkable. You will notice gilded copper plates thatched above. Moreover, the kitchen attached to it seats 3,000 people and offers basic, free meals.
Yet another elegant temple on the banks of River Nethravathi, the Ram Mandir boasts of elegant construction and marble idols of Lord Ram and Lakshman, as well as Goddess Sita. Year on year, the number of tourists it sees has only been increasing.
Other temples
Besides the 2 famous temples mentioned above, you must visit these temples as well including Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala, the Jain Temple of Bahubali, Shri Rama Kshetra and Southadka Shree Mahaganapathi Kshetra.
Manjusha Museum. mage courtesy NGowthami k
It is is not just about temples. It’s also about some preserved elements in a museum. Take Manjusha Museum for example. It houses vintage cars, objects of religious importance, antiques, chariots, artefacts, and paintings.
Nethravathi Barrage
The River lends its shores to beautiful temples. However, a part of the secluded barrage offers scenic views for visitors as well. It houses a nature care hospital on its banks. A system of five elements or panch bhoothas is followed here.
People love shopping anywhere and anytime. Why should the temple town stay behind? While there aren’t any massive malls or dedicated shopping complexes, clothes, fresh fruits and vegetables and basic stuff can be bought by the roadside stalls and smaller stores around the town.
Spot the statues
Sometimes, the statues diffuse importance to the temples. In Dharmasthala, there are a few statues you must pay special attention to. The Bahubali statue was erected in the year 1973 out of a single rock and is 12 meters in height. On the other hand, the tall statue of Gomateshwara is amongst those that cannot be missed.
How to reach Dharmasthala
Dharmasthala as such does not have a railway station. However, trains to the closest stations could be boarded. Yedamangala Station is just 27 kilometers away while the one at Kabakaputtur is merely 28 kilometers away. Mangalore Railway Station is at a distance of 74 kilometers and Bangalore City Junction Railway Station is roughly 295 kilometers away.
The closest airport is Bajpe Airport of Mangalore at 155 kilometers and the next closest is Mysore Airport at 155 kilometers. Kempegowda International Airport of Bangalore is approximately 295 kilometers.
If you want to drive down from Bangalore or Mangalore , they are situated about 295 and 75 kilometers respectively. If you want to board a bus, you can check the schedule in advance as most of the buses from major cities ply to Dharmasthala at frequent intervals.

Dharmasthala Temple is an 800-year-old religious institution in the temple town of Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka, India. The deities of the temple are Shiva, who is referred to as Mañjunatha, Ammanavaru, the tirthankara Chandraprabha and the protective gods of Jainism, Kalarahu, Kalarkayi, Kumarasvami and Kanyakumari. The temple is considered unique since it belongs to the Shaiva sect of Hinduism. The priests are Shivalli Brahmins, who are Vaishnava, and the administration is run by a Jain Bunt family called the Pergades. 800 years ago, Dharmasthala was known as Kuduma in Mallarmadi, then a village in Belthangady. Here lived the Jain Bunt chieftain Birmanna Pergade and his wife Ammu Ballalthi in a house called Nelliadi Beedu. According to the legend, the guardian angels of Dharma assumed human forms and arrived at Pergade’s abode in search of a place where Dharma was being practised and could be continued and propagated. As was their habit, the couple hosted these illustrious visitors with all their wherewithal and great respect. Pleased by their sincerity and generosity, that night the Dharma Daivas appeared in the dreams of Pergade. They explained the purpose of their visit to him and instructed him to vacate his house for the worship of the Daivas and dedicate his life to the propagation of Dharma. Asking no questions, the Pergade built himself another house and began worshiping the Daivas at Nelliadi Beedu.
This worship of daivas continues. The Dharma Daivas again appeared before Pergade to build separate shrines to consecrate the four Daivas — Kalarahu, Kalarkayi, Kumaraswamy and Kanyakumari. Also, Pergade was instructed to choose two persons of noble birth to act as the Daivas’ oracles and four worthy persons to assist Pergade in his duties as the executive head of the shrines. In return, the Daivas promised Pergade protection for his family, abundance of charity and renowned for the ‘Kshetra’. Pergade, as desired, built the shrines and invited Brahmin priests to perform the rituals. These priests requested Pergade to install a Shivalinga beside the native Daivas. The Daivas then sent their vassal Annappa Swamy to procure the linga of Shiva from Kadri Manjunath Temple, near Mangalore. Subsequently, the Manjunatha temple was built around the linga. The Pergade family is a Jain Bunt family who descend from the creator of the temple. Birmanna Pergade and his wife Ammu Ballalthi and are the hereditary trustees of the temple. The eldest male member assumes the position of Dharma Adhikari (chief administrator) and uses the title Heggade. The Heggade was the feudal lord of the temple town and solved civil or criminal disputes. This was a judicial function and continues even to this day: The Heggade sits in judgement on hundreds of civil complaints, known as hoyulu, each day. About nearly twenty generations of the Pergade family have assumed the position of Dharma Adhikari. The present Dharma Adhikari is Veerendra Heggade.

History of Dharmasthala Temple
Dharmasthala Temple was founded by Basavanna, a 12th-century poet-saint who belonged to the Lingayat sect of Hinduism. He was inspired by Jainism and wanted to spread its teachings in his region. He built a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on a hilltop near his ashram (hermitage). He also established a monastery for Jain monks and nuns.
The temple was later renovated and expanded by various rulers and dynasties over time. It became a center of learning and worship for both Jains and Hindus. It also attracted many pilgrims from different parts of India and abroad. The temple was administered by a Jain Bunt family known as the Pergades until 2014.
In 2014, the temple was taken over by Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba, a spiritual leader who claimed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He renamed the temple as Sri Manjunatha Temple after Lord Shiva’s consort Lakshmi. He also introduced many changes and innovations in the temple’s administration, management, and services.
Today, Dharmasthala Temple is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Karnataka. It receives millions of devotees every year who come to seek blessings from Lord Shiva or Lord Manjunatha (Shiva). It also hosts various festivals and events throughout the year that celebrate its diversity and harmony.
Architecture and Culture of Dharmasthala Temple
Dharmasthala Temple is known for its unique architecture that blends elements of Jainism and Hinduism. The temple is built on a hilltop that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The temple complex consists of several structures that are connected by stairs or paths.
The main structure is called the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) where Lord Shiva or Lord Manjunatha are installed in a shivalinga (a linga-shaped symbol) form. The shivalinga is made of black stone that symbolizes Lord Shiva’s power over death. The shivalinga is surrounded by various idols or images that represent different aspects or forms of Lord Shiva or Lord Manjunatha.
The Garbhagriha is flanked by two smaller structures called Mandapas (prayer halls) where devotees can perform rituals or ceremonies. One Mandapa is dedicated to Lord Rama while the other one is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. Both Mandapas are decorated with colorful paintings or murals that depict scenes from Hindu mythology.
The Garbhagriha is also connected by two other structures called Mandapas where devotees can offer prayers or donations to Lord Shiva or Lord Manjunatha.

Architectural Style
The temple has been built following the Kerala temple architecture. The architecture of temples in Kerala is different from the other areas in India. The architectural style of the temple follows suit and has an inherent simplicity. The temple has a very distinct style of architecture coupled with a lavish use of wood, stone and metals. The base structure of the temple is made using granite and laterite. The temple has a square plan and thus a pyramidal roof. The steep and needle like roof is made of wood and is covered with gold-plated copper plates in order to protect the inner skeletal framework from the vigorous monsoons of the western ghats. Recently, a meticulously planned renovation was conducted at the temple to renew the wood carvings and apply methods to protect the architectural components from external physical or climatic adversities.

Shri Veerendra Heggade has identified the segments of development absolutely thoughtfully. After ensuring a quality education to the youth, the next step was to ensure a healthy living for the people of Dharmasthala. What started as a local venture of providing health care aid to the natives evolved into a nationwide procurement process. Now, SDM trust has built more than 20 major healthcare organizations that provide health care assistance of international standards.
Mobile Hospital
The SDM mobile hospital is one of the most thought-over solution provided to the physically needy. Shri Heggade realized that if the villagers in these inaccessible areas could not reach hospitals, which incidentally were far and few, then he had to literally bring the Hospital to their doorstep.
The Mobile Hospital is staffed by experienced doctors and qualified support staff. It is equipped with a laboratory and a fully stocked pharmacy. It visits all the villages, however inaccessible the location, to provide immediate relief. The dates of the visit and the services provided by the Mobile Hospital are widely publicized through the Panchayat Leaders, Social Workers and NGOs. Recently LIC of India donated the chassis on which an ultra modern version of the Mobile Hospital was built. This replaces the old one who served for over three decades.

Home / Cultural Development
The existence of a variety of cultural or ethnic groups within a society leads to a lot of different cultural practices. Tulunadu contributes very actively to the cultural assets of Karnataka and subsequently India. The various folk forms like Yakshagana, Bhootha Kola, Nagamandala, Pili Vesha are very popular and ancient folk forms of the regional populace.
Dr. Veerendra Heggade has taken every effort to preserve and propagate these art forms within the people of tulunadu and spread its glory throughout the world. Yakshagana is a colourful folk drama – which features colourfully attired artistes typical to this beautiful folk art – and entertains the spectators with a night long performance. Since it narrates stories from the Hindu mythologies through songs, dances and dialogues, the artistes represent characters from the Hindu pantheon of gods.
This art form has a history of more than 200 years. It is popular in the district as an art form that is both entertaining as well as didactic. As the theme is drawn from mythology, it has a moral message communicated through music, dance and dialogue in the vernacular Language (Kannada as well as Tulu).
To strengthen the glory of Yakshagana, Shri Heggade established the Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Yakshagana Kala Kendra.
This Kala Kendra encourages young and aspiring artists to learn this performing art and provides them with a six month training course every year. In the coastal region of Karnataka the funding and presentation of an yakshagana performance is seen by devotees as an expression of their gratitude to Lord Manjunatha for the blessings bestowed on them by the Lord. Many such devotees show their gratitude to Lord Manjunatha by organizing and funding a yakshagana performance by the Dharmasthala Yakshagana troupe. The troupe is so popular that one has to book a performance by the troupe years in advance if one wants to undertake such a religious offering.
