History of Cricket

The game of cricket goes long back to British times. When it was introduced in India, very few people played this game. The Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh brought this game into limelight. He was a great patron of sports. He played cricket and he had his own team. Cricket was his second love after his kingdom. He was the man behind the golden history of cricket due to his passion for the game. His team Patiala XI was the best team during that time and he was the captain of the Indian team. How is Cricket Played?

Cricket is a game played by two teams of eleven players each on a pitch with two sets of three stumps, which are called wickets. The bowler bowls the ball down the pitch to the batsman of the opposing team, who must defend the wickets in front of which he stands. The target of the game is to score as many runs as possible.

Runs are scored by individual players by running on the playing strip (called pitch) between the wickets, or by hitting a ball that flies outside the boundary of the playground or which falls inside the boundary but bounces or rolls outside. When the balls go directly outside the boundary, the batsman scores six runs, and when the ball falls within the boundary but rolls outside then the batsman scores four runs. The opponent team will bowl and field and their objective is to take the wickets for each of the batsmen playing on the pitch.

A batsman can be dismissed in one of several ways: by the bowler hitting the wicket with the ball, which is called, bowled; by a fielder catching the ball hit by the batsman before it touches the ground and it is called caught; by the wicket-keeper or another fielder breaking the stumps while the batsman attempts a run and is therefore out of his ground. This is called stumped or run out. A batsman can also be dismissed if the batsman breaks the wicket with his own bat or body and this is called a hit wicket; by a part of the batsman’s body being hit by a ball that would otherwise have hit the wicket is called leg before the wicket or “lbw”.

A match consists of one or two innings, and each inning ends when the tenth batsman of the batting team is out, when a certain number of overs (an over: a series of six balls bowled) have been played or when the captain of the batting team declares ending the innings voluntarily.

Forms of Cricket

They are switched out whenever they are declared out or complete their allotted number of balls and overs. The strategic play between these two players forms the essence of the game, showcasing the intricate dynamics that unfold on the cricket field.

Before the commencement of a cricket match, a coin toss occurs to determine which team will start batting. This toss becomes a crucial moment, setting the tone for the entire match.

The essence of cricket lies in the dual facets of winning and defeating, adding layers of intrigue to the game. Moments of exhilaration erupt when a batsman hits a boundary or scores a six, filling the cricket ground and stadium with the resounding cheers of fervent cricket lovers, particularly when the favored team is at the crease.

English Essay on “A Cricket Match” English Essay-Paragraph-Speech for Class 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 CBSE Students and competitive Examination.

A Cricket Match

Essay No. 01

I had often wondered why cricket is called a religion in our country. I found my answer the day I saw a live match at the Wankhede stadium.

As I reached the stadium I could feel a buzz around the place. Soon, we were seated and the match got underway. I craned my neck to get a good look at all the players I had admired over the years. South Africa got off to a good start. With every wicket that fell, there was a deafening roar in the stadium. Placards went up and flags were waved hysterically.

The Indian team came in to chase the score. The crowds were on their feet as Sachin Tendulkar came in to bat. As he scored run after run, the applause became louder and reached a crescendo as he reached a century. However, he was bowled out on the very next ball. At that moment, you could have heard a pin drop in the silence that fell upon the stadium.

The match was coming to a close and India still needed six runs on the last ball to win. I could feel my heart thumping loudly. Would we come so close and lose the match? I am sure every person in the stadium was praying along with me at that moment. As the last ball was bowled, Anil Kumble stepped out of the crease and lofted it over the stadium. I watched with baled breath as the ball covered the ground and landed over the boundary rope. The whole stadium erupted with joy.

Even if you have watched innumerable matches on television, nothing can prepare you for the thrill of watching India win a cricket match live!

There was a toss of a coin. We won the toss and elected to bat first. The players began to warm up. They stretched and jumped.

He played some good strokes and scored steadily. Uttam was caught behind the wicket. He was dismissed for 18 runs. Then came in our captain Tapan. He is an all-rounder. He scored 30 runs before he was declared LBW. It included six and two fours. Later Saurav played well and scored 25 runs. It helped our side to reach 120 runs for eight in the allotted 30 overs.

After lunch, the Hindu School Team started bating. Their opening batsmen played intelligently. They scored slowly and steadily. But their middle-order batsmen could not face our attack. They were soon out after another. They made 70 runs in 25 overs and gave away five wickets.

Their tail-enders played boldly. But then they were all out for 105 runs. We beat them by 15 runs. I took their three valuable wickets.

Essay on A Cricket Match 500 Words in English

Below we have provided a Cricket Match Essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

“Cricket to us was more than play; it was a worship in the summer sun.” ~ Edmund Charles Blunden

Two things have made their place in the heart of Indians forever; Shahrukh Khan (The King Khan of Bollywood) and the sport of cricket. In our country, cricket is a religion and players like Sachin Tendulkar are considered as god. This game is enjoyed by small children as well as office going adults. It never fails to amuse us. You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

Paragraph on Cricket – 250 to 300 Words for Classes 9, 10, 11, 12 and Competitive Exams

Initially popular as the “Gentleman’s Game,” cricket, over the years has emerged as a sport beyond the borders of gender, race and countries. Every time we hear words like “How was that?” or “Bowled out,” we can only think of the heartbeats, the cheering, the pressure and the amazement of a cricket match.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) governs matches globally whereas the rules of the game are laid down in a code called Laws of Cricket. Every cricket match is played between two teams of 15 players out of which the best and fittest 11 play the match. The match equipment including bat’s weight, usage of the ball, wicket dimensions, position of umpires, etc. are strictly monitored on the field.

The format has changed considerably with matches in both limited and unlimited overs. In addition to large scale tournaments like the World Cup, country-based premier leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL) and Champions League (CLT20) have gained popularity. The major national team rivalries in cricket are seen between England and Australia, India and Pakistan, South Africa and England with nail-biting matches.

Although cricket is not the national game of India, it is definitely the most followed and played. The Men’s national team has won the cricket world cup in all formats under the leadership of captains like Kapil Dev and M.S. Dhoni. The Women’s national team is prospering and has reached world cup finals with players like Mithali Raj, Smriti Mandhana, Jhulan Goswami and so on. Even the under 19 and blind cricket teams of India have brought home several trophies.

Since cricket, as a sport drives so many emotions, it is the responsibility of every player to keep its spirit alive. Gambling and illegal practices must completely be stopped in the game. Cricket should be cherished as the childhood dream and adulthood celebration if not reality of a thousand hearts!

The CRICKET MATCH ESSAY ( NARRATIVE)

A cricket match that i watched.

Games and sports are a good source of amusement. People have always sought rescue in games and sports to escape dullness and monotony. They provide us a time to forget our worries and get lost in great pleasure.

Last Saturday a one-day cricket match of 50 overs was played between two reputed teams of Kashmir YCC and BCC in Srinagar at Bakshi Stadium. A large number of spectators had come to witness the match.

Please enable JavaScript

BCC started at a rather slow pace. However, runs started coming once the opening pair settled well. They scored 50 runs in the first fifteen overs. In the next five overs, they hit 30 runs. Soon after the spinners were brought in, they managed to move the ball and checked the flow of runs. It made the batsmen impatient and they started hitting the ball desperately. They started losing wickets and at one occasion slumped to 125 for seven. They needed 74 runs in the last 14 fourteen overs with only three wickets in hand. The vice-captain showed courage, skill, and aggression. He hit twenty runs in 38th over with 2 sixes and 2 fours. There was a bowling change which again proved disastrous and the hitter was clean bowled. With two wickets in hand BCC still needed 36 runs in 36 balls. In the next two overs, they scored 13 runs. At this stage, the 9th wicket fell.

In the last over they had to score eight runs to win. They scored five runs off the first five balls. Now the last ball had to be bowled –one wicket for YCC and three runs by BCC was the victory target. There was extreme sensation all around. The bowler of YCC team came racing and bowled a ball of 150km speed. It took a lucky edge and crossed the fence giving a brilliant victory to BCC.

Both the teams were given warm applause for their struggle and brilliant performance. I really enjoyed the match very much.
