Biography Tells Its Story Of Active Face Oils At Clean Beauty Retailer Onda Beauty

When Linda Alixe Thompson launched Olie Biologique in 2012, its face oil forte was an anomaly in an American market that considered oils a strange proposition for skincare. In the ensuing years, face oils became so commonplace that their ubiquity in the clean beauty segment made it difficult to distinguish them.

Despite the proliferation of face oils, Thompson decided not to run away from them. Instead, with Biography , a new company building upon the learnings of Olie Biologique, she’s doubling down on face oils to be a trusted purveyor of the best of them. Now, she’s rolling out Biography to the retailer Onda Beauty , where its face oils will be incorporated in spa treatments to showcase their power to discerning beauty consumers with the wherewithal to try tons of skincare offerings.

“Because of my experience and conviction, and how we blended these ingredients, their efficacy and our sourcing, we are really an authority on oils. It’s almost like how you would go to Rossignol for skis. Active oils are really our expertise,” says Thompson. “They are not part of a range, and just another feature in a broader lineup emulsions and cleansers. They are really our specialty and that narrows down the competitive landscape.”

Thompson, a scion of the Bronfman family that amassed its fortune from the Seagram liquor business, was originally introduced to face oils about a decade ago while traveling to France for Cartier International as the storied jewelry brand’s SVP of editorial content. Seeking a moisturizer for her skin parched by a frigid Paris winter, she popped into a local French pharmacy, and the pharmacist whipped her up an ampule of oils that proved to be better than any moisturizer she’d previously applied. Thompson set out to create oils of her own with potent ingredients from countries around the world.

“Before I knew it, I put oils on 10,000 faces. In so doing, people discovered a different way to hydrate their skin. It really took off. Then, I realized it was really something I wanted to brand and get serious about,” says Thompson. “It wasn’t only about incredible ingredients, but the stories people would tell you. Older women, for example, who would say people who had never noticed them before were noticing them.”

“Active oils are really our expertise.”

With Biography, Thompson’s objective is to draw loyal customers to share their various personal experiences with oils. She details designers, musicians, artists, fitness instructors and more residing in vibrant urban centers are gravitating to the brand. With the help of creative director Adrianne De Loia, its visual identity was crafted with a nod to Art Deco in its typography and structural packaging mixed with a contemporary color palette. Reflecting the evolution of individuals’ biographies, Thompson says, “The interaction of the color of the oil and the color of the bottles changes over time as you use them.” She adds, “It’s really designed for somebody who has a high-design aesthetic. It’s not just a cream that you put in a cabinet. It’s meant to be something that’s gifted and out for display every day.”

Biography’s selection consists of four face oils priced from $52 to $112 for 30-ml. sizes. Long June is a dry oil addressing inflammation that’s an entry point into the brand. Petty Grudges is an overnight treatment oil intended to boost skin elasticity. Golden Ray is a radiance amplifier with French marine algae as its star ingredient. Few Words is a multipurpose oil for men that can serve the functions of shaving creams and post-shave salves as well as hair, beard and skin oils. Biography’s oils are housed in recyclable glass and Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper tubes printed with soy ink. The brand has produced video clips and playlists for each oil to immerse consumers in their worlds. Oils extending into the body care, home and children’s arenas are opportunities for assortment growth.

“Your skincare routine is bookended by a cleanser and a sunblock, and the way I look at the Biography line is that it can take you through to those two bookends,” says Thompson. “Our Golden Ray, for example, can take the place of a serum and a moisturizer. The products are all highly concentrated. So, used on a daily basis, they’re quite accessible.”

Biography’s face oils are constructed with proprietary formulations containing pure distilled and pressed oils. Thompson explains, “Just because we have only 14 ingredients in a bottle, it’s not immediately obvious how that is going to be harmonious. People think you toss them together, and that’s great, but it’s like cooking. There’s a certain level of art and skill you need to have.”

Biography went live in direct-to-consumer distribution in December and, although DTC is expected to be its primary sales driver at the moment, Thompson is interested in the brand entering key retailers that bolster its positioning. Clean beauty retailers are natural stockists, but she foresees Biography going into venues that might seem atypical, too, including travel-oriented stores, barbershops, and interior design and clothing destinations. Miami pop-ups catering to the art and design community are possibilities. So far, Biography’s customers are about 20% male, and its Instagram following is about 30% male. Its female customers are younger than Thompson imagined at the outset, and she says the brand is attracting customers in their 20s at the edge of the gen Z/millennial divide.

In its retail debut, Onda Beauty has a three-month exclusive on Biography. “They have a wonderful customer base that really believes in clean beauty, and they have an aesthetic that fits ours, and it brings us close to an audience that is like-minded,” says Thompson. “It offers the customer an expert-level component with the treatment that’s missed in online sales. It was important for me to meet the aestheticians and have a close connection with our customers through them.”

Amid the sea of clean beauty brands flooding the beauty industry, Onda Beauty founder Larissa Thomson says Biography “caught my attention.” She elaborates, “Their perspective on skin having its own narrative and being able to change that narrative to improve your skin’s story is a straightforward yet unique approach to skincare. Biography focuses on perfecting one category—face oils—with the clear intention of achieving visible results wrapped up in four beautifully designed and formulated products.”

Thompson worked with West , a combination strategy, creative and venture capital firm, on developing Biography. Asked about a first-year sales goal for the brand, Thompson responds, “I’m not too worried about sales in the short term. We are really about getting the word out and getting people’s stories out. Longer term, we are a company that’s about relationships and collecting information on our consumers’ biographies. That data set will be important to us, and I’ve got some significant non-beauty partnerships in mind that are going to start to bubble up.”

The Best After-Sun Products to Calm and Reset Sunburned Skin

Even those of us who don’t necessarily worship the sun can at least acknowledge the delight of basking in it, from its first rays in the morning to the hazy warmth of a late afternoon. It’s simply nature at work, as sunlight helps regulate everything from your sleep cycle to your vitamin D production.

Still, having too much of a good thing holds especially true when it comes to the sun—and the results can be uncomfortable at best. “Too much sun exposure, especially when not protected by SPF, leads to an inflammatory response in the skin,” says Geeta Yadav, MD, a dermatologist in Toronto. “It’s one of the major components of a sunburn: inflamed skin that’s hot to the touch.”

This is where the best after-sun products can shine. Dedicated formulas typically offer anti-inflammatory agents to calm skin within minutes, as well as antioxidants (the countermeasure against UV-induced free radicals) to offset longer-term damage to skin. Aloe vera may be the best known ingredient among them. “In addition to being hydrating and naturally full of antioxidants, it's quite soothing on contact,” says Yadav. (The key is to have the unadulterated form in a high concentration.) Another winner is chamomile: “It contains a compound known as azulene, which has potent anti-inflammatory effects.” 

That said, don’t forget that after-sun products primarily only help to relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of a sunburn. “It doesn’t undo the damage caused by the radiation, including increased risk of skin cancer,” cautions Yadav. “If you find yourself having to use after-sun products all the time, it might be that the sun protection you are using isn’t sufficient.” If that’s the case, consider a next-gen sunscreen formula (whether chemical-based or mineral ) to prevent exposure in the first place—and remember to reapply.

Face Oils Are About to Become Your New Favorite Skincare Product — Here’s Why

In the American skincare market, “oil” used to be something of a bad word, synonymous with acne, uneven skin texture, and shiny foreheads. Cleansers and moisturizers proudly declared themselves “oil-free,” and we continue to counter imperfections and blemishes with products that dry up our natural oils and leave our skin stripped. Linda Thompson founded and continues to run her beauty brand, Biography , on a different mindset entirely: Her line is made up of high-quality, carefully blended oils formulated to protect, clarify, and renew skin to leave it healthy and glowing.

While face oils weren’t commonly viewed as a skincare must-have in the U.S. when Thompson first started mixing and gifting them to friends and family a decade ago, they’ve since risen to prominence and there are now too many options to count. Below, Thompson dispels any misconceptions about face oils, how to use them, and how to find the right face oil for your skin’s needs.

What is a face oil?

The name sounds pretty self-explanatory, but there are actually different types of oils meant for different purposes. Sure, they might all have a similar consistency, but they don’t all work the same. At their core, however, face oils are meant to lock in moisture and protect the skin barrier. Some products are simply a single oil, while others are blends that can help address skin concerns like discoloration, fine lines, and more. 

Doesn’t oil on our skin lead to clogged pores or acne?

“Oil helps to regulate your skin so it doesn’t produce as much of its own oils; that’s why it can work for people with oily skin, too,” Thompson explains. “You just have to figure out what your skin needs.”  To put it simply, adding a layer of oil onto your skin will not necessarily cause acne because the appropriate product can help moderate your own oil production, and can in fact reduce shine and acne. That’s why Biography’s products work for a range of skin types: “Our oils are non-comedogenic, meaning they don’t contain any pore-clogging ingredients.”

Some oils contain “actives,” which are ingredients that actively work toward the product’s intended purpose. Think of toothpaste: The tube probably lists sodium fluoride as an active ingredient for cavity prevention, and then a bunch of other inactive ingredients.

“We believe that less is more when it comes to ingredients — fewer ingredients that are properly blended at a concentration that’s potent and effective,” Thompson tells us.

For example, one of the star ingredients in Biography’s Petty Grudges blend is rosehip seed oil, which contains vitamin C , phenols, and trans-retinoic acid that help repair UV damage, lighten dark spots, and soften fine lines. “That makes it great for people with aging or damaged skin,” Thompson says.

In a similar vein, Biography’s Golden Ray glow face oil contain a few different actives, one of which is French marine algae. “At the concentration in Golden Ray, that algae is clinically proven to stimulate collagen production, which improves elasticity and softens wrinkles,” Thompson says. “Carrot seed oil — another active that’s packed with vitamins A, C, and E — works in tandem to help repair sun damage and scars, boost collagen, and moisturize your skin. It’s a really powerful, but gentle, product.”

Where should face oils fit into our skincare routines? Should they replace a moisturizer?

Before you cut out your go-to moisturizer entirely, assess what’s in it and what it’s doing for your skin. “People use ‘hydrate’ and ‘moisturize’ interchangeably when it comes to skincare, but they’re actually very different,” Thompson tells us. “Hydration = water, and moisture = oil. So if your skin is dull and tight, that means it’s dehydrated and lacking water. If your skin is flaky and red, that means it’s lacking oil.”

For most people, the best way to ensure your skin is getting everything it needs is to layer up. Start with a hydrator, like hyaluronic acid or peptides, to give your skin a boost of water. Then, move onto your moisturizing ingredient — like oils — to seal everything in,” Thompson says. Some oils can be both: Golden Ray contains collagen-boosting marine algae that improves hydration, plus oils that moisturize and lock in that hydration.

Thompson recommends applying oil on damp skin so it locks in hydration for a longer-lasting, dewy look, but regardless of the products you use after cleansing, face oils should be the last product you apply before sunscreen and makeup. That’s because it forms a protective barrier on your skin that other products won’t be able to penetrate.

“You can apply it under your makeup or even mix a few drops in with your favorite foundation or tinted moisturizer to create a glowy sheen. You can also apply a little oil over your makeup as a midday refresh.”

How should we go about choosing an oil brand?

First off, find a company that has strict standards for its ingredients and safety tests its products: “Even natural oils can cause irritation or reactions if improperly formulated or contaminated,” Thompson says. 

Assess your skin’s needs, and look for active ingredients at high enough concentrations to get you there — beware of filler ingredients or really low amounts of active ingredients that won’t actually be effective.

If you’re concerned about price, think of it this way: A little goes a long way, so while the price point may be a little higher than a cream moisturizer, an oil will last longer. And Biography has even rolled out mini versions of its oils that will still last you for months, so you can find out if they work for you without making a big financial commitment.
