Artificial Intelligence, Presentation Brilliance

A closer look at the artificial intelligence behind haiku deck zuru.

You may have heard that Haiku Deck Zuru is the world’s first presentation creation tool powered by artificial intelligence. It is so unique and powerful that we have submitted a patent for the transformation of structured content into a presentation.

So…what exactly does that mean?

Here’s a step-by-step walk-through of Zuru with our co-founder and CTO Kevin , who shows that artificial intelligence isn’t just a buzzword. In fact, Haiku Deck Zuru uses a number of different kinds of artificial intelligence (as well as massive amounts of proprietary data) in thoughtful ways to transform presentations from boring to brilliant.

Step 1: Parsing and Data Structuring

Types of artificial intelligence used: natural language processing.

The presentation transformation process begins with an uploaded PowerPoint or Keynote file, or with an outline created in Evernote. (Our goal is to be able to input more file types soon.)

First, Haiku Deck Zuru’s parsing engine extracts the text, converting it from a binary file into structured data that can be analyzed (and, ultimately, transformed).

Zuru looks for and extracts any custom images, analyzing where the images are placed on each slide and assessing importance by calculating how much of the slide area each image takes up. If an important custom image is identified, Zuru centers and aligns it to make it fit well with the visual style of Haiku Deck.

At this stage, Zuru also uses natural language processing to strip words down to their most meaningful roots, remove duplicates, standardize text, and identify meaningful compound words (for example, “Space Needle” instead of “space” and “needle”). This processing stage is critical for identifying appropriate images later on.

Next, Zuru looks at how the text is laid out, noting patterns such as list items, titles and subtitles, headers and sub headers, and so on. It analyzes the size and placement of text to intelligently identify footer text, and to zero in on which text is important and which is not.

Zuru also analyzes the text to evaluate at a high level how well it follows presentation best practices, and to identify presentations that will require more manual intervention. For example, are there too many bullets, or too many words in general?

Step 2: Keyword Analysis

Types of artificial intelligence used: machine learning.

This is where the artificial intelligence behind Zuru gets really interesting, as Zuru uses the (anonymous) data it has gathered from the millions of presentations created by Haiku Deck users to suggest a beautiful, relevant image for each slide.

Using this giant data set (which had to be crunched for 36 hours using a linear regression model), Zuru looks at how frequently each possible keyword on a slide appears in presentations, vs. how frequently it has been used as an image search term and actually selected as an image result.

For example:

• “Love” appears very frequently in presentations, but it’s not frequently used as the image search term. So when Zuru sees “love” on a slide, it is less likely to select that word for the image search.
• “Dog” appears frequently, and is frequently chosen. So when Zuru sees “dog” on a slide, it is more likely to select that word for the image search.
• “Space Needle” does not appear frequently, but is frequently chosen. So when Zuru sees “Space Needle” on a slide, it is very likely to select that phrase for the image search (and, if you remember from step 1, it’s smart enough to look for the iconic structure instead of pictures of stars or sewing).

Zuru also takes into consideration where a given keyword appears in the slide (for example, a word appearing in the header is likely more important than a word appearing in the 5th bullet), how frequently it appears on the slide, and how frequently a given word has appeared in other slides. All these calculations help determine the best term or terms to use for an image search.

Step 3: Image Selection

Next, Zuru does an image search for the most highly ranked keywords, returning hundreds of extremely high-quality, Creative Commons licensed images in a matter of milliseconds. Kevin has carefully designed this step to be able to handle massive amounts of image searches very quickly, in parallel, so that it feels instantaneous to the user.

Because of all the natural language process and normalization we’ve done already (see step 1), as well as our robust proprietary data set (see step 2), more than 90% of image search terms appear in our list of the 70,000 most popular image search terms, which allows Zuru to suggest standout images incredibly quickly and accurately.

Images that have been hand-curated by our team, or that have been selected frequently by Haiku Deck users, rise to the top — and, of course, Zuru will continue to get smarter with every new presentation created.

Step 4: Image Optimization

Types of artificial intelligence used: computer vision, k-means clustering.

Once Zuru has identified the perfect image for a slide background, it converts the image into a Lab color space, a format closely mapped to the way that humans perceive light. Zuru uses a process called K-means clustering to analyze the color palette, removing the grayscales and zeroing in on the colors that appear most frequently in the image. Zuru pulls out the most prominent colors in the image and performs brightness analysis on them, comparing them against hundreds of professionally designed color palettes to select the ideal colors for the slide foreground and background.

Next, Zuru performs brightness analysis to determine the best placement of the text (top, middle, or bottom), and whether a text screen is needed for optimal readability and contrast.

Finally, Zuru adjusts the zoom and placement of the image so that the slide background is perfectly centered.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

At this stage, Zuru analyzes the presentation content to determine the high-level category (for example, real estate, marketing, education) and select an appropriate font from our full library of themes .

Kevin’s goal with Zuru is to use data and artificial intelligence to get presentations 90% of the way there in a matter of minutes, and to make it very easy for the presentation creator to review and fine-tune the results.

In this final stage, Zuru will point out areas where trimming down text could improve the presentation, and also identify slides where it needs more input to select the correct keyword or image. The user can either make edits right in Zuru, or export back to .pptx format to edit directly in PowerPoint (which we didn’t even think was possible until very recently).

Sound complicated? Well, it is — which is one of the many reasons we love Kevin and his team. The good news is that although Zuru is complex behind the scenes, it’s incredibly important to all of us that the user experience is simple.

Haiku Deck’s Zuru is smart enough to build your presentation for you

It’s time to officially ditch PowerPoint as your go-to tool for building slideshow presentations. Slideshow-building app Haiku Deck ’s latest feature, Haiku Deck Zuru, practically builds a slideshow for you, extracting the must-know information from your notes and putting it together in a gorgeously themed presentation. The Haiku Deck team calls Zuru, which was announced on Thursday, artificial intelligence, as it looks for keywords to pick out slide topics and relevant images pulled from its image database, which is entirely safe for public use. 

Haiku Deck got a couple of additional new features on Thursday as well. You’ll find a new presentation gallery with customizable templates for a wide range of events, additional slide templates, and a new color-matching tool that lets you use precise color schemes (perhaps pulled straight from your brand’s logo). You’ll also be able to “remix” existing decks created and shared by other users. All of these features, save for Zuru, are available for both the iPad and the Web version.

Need to present a social media report? There’s a deck for that.

We applauded Haiku Deck when it first launched for offering a seamless way to build slideshows on the iPad, which could then be exported to PowerPoint or Keynote or shared via the Web. Each Haiku Deck update brings added functionality that make it a real competitor in the presentation building space, and Haiku Deck Zuru feels like the platform’s first major premium offering. It’s an additional feature that users will have to pay extra for—$30 a year if purchased during the presale, and $60 a year after that. 

So, with a price tag like that, is this service worth it? I got to demo Haiku Deck Zuru before launch with Adam Tratt, Haiku Deck’s cofounder and CEO, and really liked what I saw.

Here’s how it works: You import your slideshow outline (sorry, there is a little work involved here) from Evernote, PowerPoint, or Keynote, and Haiku Deck Zuru gets to work. It analyzes keywords, looks for key phrases, studies how you’ve organized your notes, and builds a deck from there. You can manually play around with individual slide layouts and tweak the content, of course, and shuffle the slides around until they’re in the order that you want. 

Zuru organizes your notes into a slideshow, but you can change the slide template if there’s something you like more.

It reminds me of Evernote’s presentation mode, which turns your notes into a slideshow with the push of a button. However, one thing that Haiku Deck Zuru excels in is images. It automatically pulls in artwork from its database based on keywords—for example, if you’re working on a presentation about San Francisco’s housing market, Zuru might identify “San Francisco,” “rent increases,” and “housing bubble” as keywords, and then recommend an image to use that is tagged with one of those keywords. Images are selected based on how often an image has been selected over time—meaning, you’ll see the best and most popular images float to the top of your selection list.

You can always manually change the image to something else in Haiku Deck’s database, or select a different keyword to open up your image options. You can also upload your own photos to use, but make note of your privacy settings—if you’re making a public presentation, that image will be made available to the rest of the Haiku Deck community.

When you’re finished building your deck, you can embed that slideshow in any website, or share it to your social networks or via email. You can also export it as an editable PPTX file and work with it some more in either PowerPoint or Keynote. 

It might seem redundant to upload a slideshow you’ve already built, but I loved what I saw Haiku Deck Zuru do with a ho-hum PowerPoint slider. It stripped away its cheesy stock template, broke over-crammed slides up into more digestible bites, and even recognized important charts and figured out a way to incorporate them in a more visually impressive way. Plus, it created a custom color palette to give the slideshow a more polished design.

“We want to get the user as close to ‘done’ as possible,“ Tratt said, “and if we can take something crummy and make it 80 percent better, we’ve done our job.”

Haiku Deck Zuru will be a Web-only offering to start. It can be purchased now during its presale for $30 for a one-year subscription, and presale subscribers will have access to a beta in early spring 2015. The full Version 1.0 of Haiku Deck Zuru is scheduled to launch by late spring 2015, and it’s regular price is set for $60 per year. Haiku Deck Zuru is an additional premium feature—Haiku Deck’s apps for the iPhone and iPad will remain free, as will its standard Web app.

Haiku Deck’s Zuru tool uses AI to help you create PowerPoints fast

Most people hate putting together a PowerPoint deck. If you’re one of those, Haiku Deck’s new Zuru tool promises to cut the time you need to spend to do so to a matter of minutes.

For each slide, a user simply needs to input his or her text; Zuru then analyzes the content, highlighting what it thinks are the key points and matching the text with a thematically appropriate image.

Haiku Deck Zuru is what the company has put together after quietly watching what customers of its Haiku Deck Web and iOS app have put together over the past year or so: shareable, public presentations that use some common, attractive layouts and complement them with Creative Common images. Zuru just does them automatically, and with intelligence, executives said.

Users can either create their own decks from scratch or “remix” decks that others have made.

 “Because we’ve taken this cloud approach [to the app], we can look at this data in aggregate: what approach does the user take as he or share creates their story, what images are they picking, what ideas are important versus less important,” said Adam Tratt, the founder and CEO of Haiku Deck, in an interview.

Users can select from one of several templates, input their data, and let Haiku Deck Zuru do its thing. Alternatively, a customer can choose to “remix” a deck that another user has published publicly. Users can also color match images to their preferences, and use one of a dozen new custom fonts.

Users can select from a variety of layouts, too.

But to be clear, the Zuru app’s priority is to reduce the time needed to put together a PowerPoint presentation, while keeping it looking it sharp. And Haiku Deck will charge for the privilege. While the Web app and iOS app will remain free, the company will charge $60 per year for the Zuru service. Early adopters will be charged $30 per year.

For the price, subscribers will be able to able to have early access to the Zuru service, which will enter beta in “early spring” and roll out later in the quarter. They’ll be able to make the presentations private or public, and save them as a generic Powerpoint .pptx file if they so choose.

Why this matters: You may look at Haiku Deck and think it looks a bit simplistic; you may be used to PowerPoint presentations with a dozen bullet points and graphics on a single slide. Nothing precludes you from making a complex PowerPoint slide using Haiku Deck; Zuru just tries to cut the time for you to do so dramatically.

3 Must Know AI Presentation Apps

Introduction

In this video I provide a brief overview of three AI presentation apps you need to know. These apps use artificial intelligence as a foundation function and help you create stunning presentations. The three apps covered are beautiful.ai, Haiku Deck Zuru, and slidebean Pitch Deck Builder. I cover what you need to get started, template and layout options, adding content, and presentation options.

When you think about artificial intelligence, what comes to mind? Household items that assist you with daily chores? Maybe something a bit more advanced like playing chess, food prep, or delivery? Or maybe actual robots - friendly or not. So, are your presentations being controlled by AI? Probably not, but artificial intelligence is definitely becoming a common element of presentation software.

Beautiful.ai

Currently the top AI presentation app is Beautiful.ai. With a focus on corporate and business environments, it has a wide variety of options. You do need to create an account to use the software. And is free to try for a 14-day trial period.

The platform provides two types of templates: slide decks and layouts. You start by selecting a Smart Slide template. Or you can select a starter template. Once you've selected the slide design, then you have a variety of layout templates.

On the layout template you add your data, text, or images. The AI engine then adjusts its formatting as needed. For instance, if you add an image to the layout all of the objects on the slide adjust automatically.

Once your deck is done, you can present either straight from the browser or export to PowerPoint or Google Slides.

The next app I want to highlight is Haiku Deck Zuru. This is a new product from Haiku Deck. It uses AI to analyze an exiting presentation or outline and then offers slide deigns based on the content analysis. At the time of recording it is in trial mode and free to try. You do need to create an account to use it.

Once you log in you have three options, upload from an existing presentation. Create a presentation from a Wikipedia topic. Or create a presentation from you own outline.

The software then pulls out words that potentially represent the main point. You select a word and a series of related images is provided. You continue this process for each identified concept. Once you select an image, the software makes it the background. The text if placed as an overlay on the image.

Once created, you have the option to modify the slides. If you want to save or download the final presentation, you'll be asked for payment details.

Slidebean is a B2B agency focusing on helping startups develop pitch decks and connecting with investors. You can use the Pitch Deck Builder for free as part of the Basic plan. You are required to create an account and sign-in to use the free services.

In the pitch deck builder, you add your outline to plain slides. Then click the Arrange by AI to get a design for your deck. The Theme you select determines the fonts, color, and style of the slide deck. Once you are satisfied with the design you can share or export the presentation.
