Will this help with public speaking?
While there is some cross-over between presentations and public speaking, this course has been specifically designed for presentations. You will find the sessions on communication and delivery useful for public speaking.
Is there a practical element?
Yes. We’ll provide the details in your joining instructions, but we do allow time for you to do some presentations and get feedback from your trainer and fellow delegates.

This facilitator training course will:
- Outline a process for building a meaningful agenda.
- Provide a model (FOCUS) for framing discussions and setting expectations.
- Offer a framework for creating good questions (INQUIRE).
- Provide tools for managing conflict related to issues and personalities.
- Introduce multiple tools for building consensus.
Course Overview
The group met, discussion happened, people agreed to take action, and surprise! Only half of what was discussed got done. Frustrated, the group then scheduled another meeting, and the cycle continued.
What went wrong? Chances are, not everyone had an equal part in creating, discussing, and buying into the decided solution.
If this sounds familiar, facilitation skills training could help you get back on track. This program covers the basics of group dynamics, the essentials of discussion management, and the fundamental skills needed to facilitate meetings.
Program Objectives
At this program’s conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Explain different types of facilitation and the skillsets needed for success in each.
- Prepare for a meeting.
- Follow best practices for creating complete and concise agendas.
- Identify when and how to use ground rules.
- Follow the FOCUS framework to launch a meeting.
- Outline best practices for using parking lots.
- Leverage anchors, echoes, loops, and signposts to keep meeting participants focused.
- Discuss the importance of staying neutral as a facilitator.
- Step in and out of the facilitator’s role.
- Use the INQUIRE model to develop a robust set of questions.
- Demonstrate summarizing, reflecting, probing, and linking skills.
- Apply the Ladder of Influence to help participants find common ground.
- Explain conditions that would suggest a team is in need of mediation or arbitration in addition to or in place of facilitation.
- Identify solutions to common challenges meeting facilitators routinely face.

Hello, my name is John Bosco Conama. I’m the Course Coordinator of the Bachelor in Deaf Studies, in the Centre for Deaf Studies, CDS. The CDS is based here in Trinity College Dublin. Trinity is one of the top 50 universities in the world and is the only college in Ireland to offer a bachelor degree in Deaf Studies. The course is accredited by Trinity College Dublin and is linked to the National Framework of Qualifications, which covers level one to level ten qualifications. The Deaf studies course is 4 years in length and is a level 8 qualification, which is equivalent to an honours degree. Students who receive an honours degree can progress to a masters, level 9 or a PHD, level 10 programme. Students have the option of studying in different areas such as education, linguistics, psychology, cultural studies, all of which are linked to the area of Deaf Studies.
The aims of the CDS are as follows:
- To increase the number of qualified Irish Sign Language/ English interpreters. Before the Centre for Deaf Studies was established, there were very few qualified interpreters in Ireland. This course provides professional training for interpreters ensuring that Deaf people are actively involved in society.
- To set the highest standard of ISL teaching.
- To provide training in the area of Deaf Studies.

The CDS is not here to replace what the IDS, DeafHear or other such organisations, rather, it is here to support them. The aim of the CDS is to encourage the use of ISL, to make sure that more people are aware of Deaf culture but also to promote research and education in the area of Deaf studies.
The CDS was established back in 2001, prior to this there was no fixed setting for studies in this field. The IDS along with other organisations lobbied for the establishment of the CDS, and after 10 years of campaigning it was finally set up. Now the CDS has more than seventy students who have received the diploma from TCD, approximately one third of whom are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Past students who have finished the Deaf Studies course are currently employed as interpreters, in schools for the Deaf, teaching ISL or as lecturers in the CDS.
