Good morning. Anytime we update our devices, we must understand any changes or new features. The current Apple update included a feature, that when enabled, allows someone to place their phone next to your or your family member's phone, and receive contact information including phone number, email address, picture, and more. To turn this feature off take these steps: 1. Go to Settings 2. Go to General 3. Go to AirDrop 4. It’s been an amazing school year! I just wanted to say thank you to all the schools, towns, youth and family services, and organizations that brought me in for my presentations during the 2022-23 school year. Parent online safety: a presentation for schools.

We know it's not easy to talk to parents about online safety - so we've created a ready to use presentation for you to deliver to them. Find top tips, discussion starters and resources to help empower them to keep their children safe and start those key safeguarding conversations.

When it comes to online Safety, we recommend a drip-feed approach rather than one single session. Choose events where parents are already present - parent evenings, celebration days, coffee mornings etc. 

Simply select the topic(s) and relevant slides from the above menu . We've added practitioner notes/prompts to support your discussions. Why not get your pupils to present alongside, share their knowledge of the latest trends or demonstrate privacy settings.

School-led Parental Online Safety Presentation

Research informs us that where children and young people encounter online issues, they are most likely to turn to Parents and Carers ** for advice.

In education terms, Online Safety for Children and Young People requires a ‘whole-school’ approach with a broad network of support (including parents and carers) if it is to be effective .  In line with this, school colleagues typically provide regular parental awareness sessions for parents, carers and the wider school community to provide updates about online-related issues and how the school addresses staying safe online as a key aspect of safeguarding provision .  Relatedly, an associated benefit of these sessions is to provide an opportunity to encourage parents and carers to support the school’s approach on topics such as social media use or age-appropriate gaming which often present issues for children and young people both within, and outside of, the school environment. 

The Online Safety agenda can be broad and complex and whilst there is therefore undoubtedly benefit in engaging external expertise to provide good quality advice and guidance (particularly around developing curriculum progression), many of the core messages for parents and carers do not necessarily require commissioning external subject-specialists and can be more effectively delivered internally .   However, a barrier to this approach is colleagues citing a lack of confidence in the subject matter, knowledge about how to approach or which resources from the vast array available are recommended to be good quality and effective.

To support education partners with a school-led approach, colleagues at Childnet have developed a (freely-available) staff-led Parental Online Safety Presentation , complete with associated guidance and delivery instructions.  The presentation considers six main areas and includes the widely recognised ‘ 3C’s Online Risk Matrix ‘ of Content, Contact and Conduct.  The presentation also covers topics including Online Grooming, Bullying and Nudes/Sexting as well as strategies, signposts and tips, along with recommendations for reporting concerns.

Internet Safety Expert Presentations

Our Internet safety experts travel nationwide to deliver in-person presentations to schools, religious groups and corporations to help educate and inform on the dangers facing our children in this mobile connected world. Our parent presentations are filled with real life examples and practical advice on how to parent and guide children to keep them safe.  Our student Internet safety presentations emphasize storytelling, practical examples and encourage peer-to-peer interaction to help reinforce concepts in a way that children can relate to and retain.

Internet Safety Presentation and Workshop Philosophy

We believe in the importance of parent-child dialogue regarding technology. Therefore, we structure our Internet safety presentations and workshops for students and parents in such a way as to facilitate conversations at home. During the day, we will lead the Internet safety presentation or workshop for students that relate to the devices, software, websites and applications they are using (both in school and at home) and specifically touch upon cultural implications and the potential harms that come with Internet usage. We discuss a variety of issues including social media, over-exposure, online predators and cyberbullying – just to name a few. That same day, we will facilitate an evening Internet safety presentation for parents and teach them about how today’s children are interacting online, the positive and negative implications of technology, and how we can parent with more understanding of technology for our families. All presentations and workshops are highly interactive and encourage dialogue among participants.

Our facilitator will encourage participation by telling relevant stories and conducting role plays to help kids and parents easily understand the content being presented.

Staff Led Online Safety Presentations

Online safety presentations for staff and parents designed to be delivered by your school.

Online safety is a whole community issue and these presentations have been designed to help support your school in raising awareness with staff and parents.

Both presentations have been designed to be delivered by the online safety Lead, or designated staff member, in your school, organisation or child care setting.

To deliver the presentations, print and read the delivery instructions in advance and familiarise yourself with the content and timings of the Prezi. The Prezi is embedded into each page and just needs to be played. You can advance the slides at any time. All supporting resources are provided.

The presentation is flexible and the direction of discussion can be guided by the staff members present and pertinent current issues.
