Quran History and Analysis Essay

The recension of the Quran was completed during the reign of Uthman ibn Affan. In particular, it was necessary to standardize this text because many people who knew the Prophet Muhammad and remembered the text of the Quran were dying. Furthermore, this standardization was critical because the territory of the caliphate and its population increased dramatically. This task was initiated by Uthman in 653 when Muslim scholars began to compile different Islamic texts.

The Uthmanic recension of the Quran has several distinctive features; at first, one should speak about the use of Kufic calligraphy with its angular strokes. Moreover, the text of this book was subdivided into 114 surahs or chapters. They are arranged according to their length, rather than chronological order. Modern versions of the Quran are based on the Uthmanic recension.

The term chronology can be used to describe the history of the Quran as the text. In this case, one should speak about the compilation of different manuscripts, which are now regarded as the inseparable part of the Islamic canon. In turn, the term chronology can be applied to describe the order of Allah’s revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. Yet, traditionally, surahs are not arranged in a chronological way.

It should be noted that for a long time, Western scholars did not perceive the Quran as the word of God. In other words, they stated that this text could be attributed to a specific author, the Prophet Muhammad (Ernst, 2009, p. 93). Much attention was also paid to the importance of oral tradition in Islam (Graham, 2010). However, the attitude toward the Quran has evolved considerably because it is perceived as the sacred text. Moreover, scholars accept the premise that in some communities, this text is considered to be the revelation from God.

Scholars, who study the Quran, can take different approaches to the analysis of this text. For example, they can focus on the themes explored in this text. This method is advocated by such a scholar as Fazlur Rahman (2009), who wants to focus on the main ideas, concepts, or underlying assumptions embedded into the surahs of the Quran. In this way, one can single out the key messages that a reader should consider (Rahman, 2009).

This paper will examine the 100th surah, which is also known as Al-Adiyat. This word can be translated as The Chargers or The Gallopers. On the whole, this surah is closely related to such a notion as Al-Akhirah that can be interpreted as afterlife. One can say that this notion plays a critical role in Islam because it shapes the ethical norms that a person should follow in his/her. This concept is not explicitly mentioned in the text, but the readers are urged to remember that their worldly life will be fully revealed to God.

Overall, this surah is aimed at showing that a person should be continuously aware of the existence and inevitability of the afterlife, during which each of his/her secrets will be disclosed and judged. This argument is particularly relevant if one speaks about individuals who commit crimes against other people. They should regard this surah as a warning against the grave danger that awaits them in the afterlife. On the whole, the thoughts about Al-Akhirah should guide the moral choices of a person. These are the main questions that should be discussed more closely because they are critical for the interpretation of this text.

This text of this surah opens with the description of violent acts committed by people who do not even think about the afterlife. In particular, one can speak about raiders who could plunder the property of other people.

In order to gain material prosperity, they could stop at nothing, even bloodshed. They are driven by “the love of wealth” (Al-Adiyat 100: 8). Such individuals try to turn a blind eye to the notion of Al-Akhirah. Apart from that, this worldview leads to the rejection of ethical norms that should guide the actions of a person. Therefore, one can argue that this behavior can produce disastrous impacts on the community. This is one of the points that should be considered by readers.

In turn, this surah is aimed at showing how erroneous this behavior is. In particular, people should take into account that their actions will not be concealed from God. In particular, one should bear in mind that the “secrets of the breasts” will eventually be made known (Al-Adiyat 100:10). In other words, a person should not suppose that God will not learn about his/her unethical actions. Therefore, one should not reject the notion of afterlife. Certainly, this surah does not clearly state that the evil deeds of a person will be punished; however, this consequence is implied in this text.

This is one of the main arguments that can be put forward. To some degree, this surah provides moral guidance that an individual should not disregard. Therefore, it is possible to argue that people who reject the notion of afterlife can act in an unethical way.

Nevertheless, this behavior will eventually lead to their destruction and damnation of this individual because God will be “perfectly informed” about the nature of their deeds. Furthermore, the wealth that these people acquired through evil deeds will be of no benefit to them. These are the main moral implications of this surah. To a great extent, it serves as a warning to the readers who should remember that their actions will be eventually evaluated from an ethical viewpoint.

Admittedly, this surah does not incorporate the term Al-Akhirah. Nevertheless, it indicates that a person should not focus only on his/her worldly life. This is one of the main details that can be distinguished. Additionally, one can say that a thematic approach to the study of the Quran is rather productive because, in this way, one can better identify the key messages that a reader should consider. Furthermore, this method is useful for understanding the ethical standards incorporated in the Quran. These are the main benefits of adopting this approach.

Thus, one can say that this surah demonstrates why awareness about Al-Akhirah is critical for the salvation of an individual. To a great extent, this goal is achieved by describing the self-destructive behavior of people who deny the existence of afterlife. The readers can see how destructive this world-view is. In particular, one should bear in mind that his/her actions and thoughts will not be concealed from Allah, who is omnipotent and omniscient.

Moreover, a person should not suppose that wealth or avert respectability can be of any benefit in the afterlife. These are the main details that be singled out because they reflect the ethical systems of Islam. Moreover, one can say that the thematic analysis of the Quran advocated by Fazlur Rahman (2009) is a very useful method of analyzing this text.

Phonetics and elocution

  • Waqf  (pause) identifies instances of pausal modes in recitation in coherence with  tafsīr  and accommodation of different teaching and learning methods.
  • Ibtidā  (resume) describes how to resume the recitation after a pausal mode was adopted.
  • Imāla  (inclination) is an Arabic dialectic phenome that shifts the long vowel  ā  to incline towards the long vowel  ī , articulating a vowel’s sound between the two.  Imāla  also includes the inclination of one consonant towards another such as the  ṣ  toward the  s  which is known to be a type of  ishmām .  Imāla  exists in most canonical  qiraʾāt  but is mostly present in certain readings such as Hamzah and Kisāʾī. The different styles of  imāla  showcase the Qur’an’s encompassment of distinct dialects, which accommodated the tribal diversity of the Arabs.
  • Madd  (lengthening lone vowels) classifies vowels and delineates the grades or levels of their duration. In many instances,  madd  transcends phonetical performances to draw the reader’s attention towards certain words, lengthen the spiritual experience of their meanings, and beautify the intonation of syllables.      
  • Takhfīf al-Hamzah  (a lightened articulation form of the letter  hamzah ), an Arabic phoneme marking the devocalization of the  hamzah  for the sake of lightening the pronunciation of a word. In addition to accommodating dialectical diversity,  takhfīf al-hamzah  makes fluent one’s articulation of the Qur’anic words. Arabs used to lighten the articulation of  hamzah  in different styles such as lightening ( tashīl ), substituting ( ibdāl ), omitting ( isqā ṭ ), and transferring the vowel to an unvocalized consonant preceding it ( naql ).  Takhfīf al-hamzah , which was adopted by many Arabs including Quraysh and Hijaz tribes, was triggered by the fact that  hamzah  is the heaviest letter in pronunciation and the farthest point of articulation ( makhraj ) in the deep throat.
  • Idghām  (assimilation), an Arabic phoneme indicating the assimilation of identical or similar consonants.

We have lived a long period of time when one of us is taught faith ( imān ) before the Qur’an. The  sūrah would be sent down upon Muhammad ﷺ so we learned its [rulings of] permissibility and prohibition, and where to pause upon reading it as you now learn the Qur’an. Today, we see men to whom the Qur’an is given before  imān  so that they recite it from beginning to end knowing nothing of its commands and prohibitions, nor where to pause when reading it. 69

Linguistic forms and rhetorical devices

The context ( maqām ) that demands the definition, generalisation, pre-positioning of part of a discourse, and inclusion (of particular words) differs from the context that demands the indefinite, specification, post-position and omission; the context of disjoining differs from that of joining; the situation that requires conciseness differs from that requiring expansiveness. Discourse with an intelligent person differs from discourse with an obtuse one. Each word with its companion is suited to a particular context. A high standard of beauty and acceptability of speech depends on its appropriateness to the situation and vice versa. 79  
  • al-Gharīb  (obscure words), a sub-genre of Qur’anic lexicology that examines uncommon or exceptional words, as well as idiomatic expressions.  Gharīb  works catalogue these words alphabetically or according to  sūrah  appearance.
  • al-Mu ʿ rrab  (loan words), a sub-genre that investigates if the Qur’an contains originally non-Arabic words and examines their process of Arabization.
  • al-Majāz  (non-literal or figurative expressions)

There are so many books which I like but Holy Quran is my favorite book which is like most. Quran is undoubtedly the complete code and covers all aspects of life. The Holy Quran is released by Allah and revealed on the last Prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W).  It is very helpful for living a peaceful life. Every minor aspect of life is discussed in Quran in detail.

My Favourite Book Essay in English Holy Quran

Every single aspect of life is very beautifully described in Holy Quran. It guides us how to differentiate between sins and evils. It describes us and teaches us every solution of a problem related to every minor topic of the whole universes in effective manners. There is a lot of information is hidden in this Book of Guidance with examples.

I recite Holy Quran on daily basis. It is in Arabic Language but is also translated into Urdu in order to understand the subject of Quran. I have firm believe in the teaching of Quran and every Muslim has firm believe because it reveals us the hidden mystery of two worlds. It not only teaches us about all aspects of worldly affairs but also guides about right and wrong affairs of the world hereafter.

The Holy Quran is written in the Arabic Language. But for our satisfaction and in order to learn the teachings of Allah and Muhammad the Holy Quran is translated into the Urdu language. It is comprised of thirty Paras. There are total one hundred and fourteen Surahs of which 85 Surahs are Makki whereas rest of the Surahs is Madani. There are 6666 are Sajad and Ayaats. The first Surah of Surah Fatiha which is the largest Surah of Quran among all Surahs whereas Surah Kosar is the shortest Surah of Quran.

The Holy Quran is the book in the world which is mostly read in the world. There are so many books which are often read in the world but Holy Quran is the sole book is most often read over again and again. There are also so many people who learned Holy Quran by Heart.  It is the sole book which gives you the surety of rewards of good deeds and punishments for bad acts and deeds. The major fact of this book it that the teaching of this Holy Book is not only for individuals or any nation or state but it is for the whole universe. We should all try to read the Holy Quran daily in order to seek refuge and forgiveness of Allah.

Four right-wing parties in the Netherlands said on Wednesday that they had reached a preliminary agreement to form a government that would exclude Geert Wilders, a populist politician, from becoming prime minister.

The breakthrough came hours before a midnight deadline and was the result of nearly six months of negotiations. After the negotiators expressed optimism about the chances of forming a government, the members of the parties that will make up the coalition said they would support the preliminary agreement.

“This won’t go wrong,” Caroline van der Plas, the leader of the Farmer Citizen Movement, a populist pro-farmer party , told reporters on Wednesday. In response, Mr. Wilders posted two prayer hands and a sun emoji on the social media platform X.

The agreement would still largely depend on Mr. Wilders’s party, Party for Freedom, which won elections decisively last fall, sending shock waves through the Dutch political system.

Since November, Mr. Wilders and his Party for Freedom had been negotiating to form a government with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, a center-right party that had governed the country for the past 13 years; New Social Contract, a centrist party ; and the Farmer Citizen Movement.

Together, the four hold 88 seats in the House of Representatives, a comfortable majority. In March, Mr. Wilders announced he would not become prime minister after the four parties could not agree on a way to work together under Mr. Wilders’s leadership.

Instead, he said, he would keep his seat in the House as the leader of his party. The leaders of the other three parties agreed to do the same, preventing any of them from taking the country’s highest office.

If the agreement is approved, the four parties will work together in a slightly different form than what the Netherlands is used to: with a cabinet that includes political outsiders and a prime minister who is not the leader of one of the governing parties.

Choosing this construction, rather than a traditional majority coalition like the one under which Prime Minister Mark Rutte has governed the country for nearly a decade and a half, aims to create more distance between the cabinet and Parliament.

But Mr. Wilders’s party will still have a lot of influence, said Simon Otjes, an assistant professor of Dutch politics at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

“It will be a cabinet on which a radical right-wing party will make a big mark,” Mr. Otjes said. “That won’t be taken away because Wilders won’t be prime minister.”

Much of the precise content of the preliminary coalition agreement remains unknown. It will most likely include a strict migration policy, the key issue on which Mr. Wilders campaigned.

A big question is who will be the next prime minister. Mr. Wilders and other negotiators have not made any public statements about it.

“We spoke about the prime minister today, as well,” Mr. Wilders told Dutch reporters on Wednesday. “And we will continue that conversation at a later time.”

Mr. Wilders is also the longest-sitting member of the House. That position could give him more weight in the public debate, Mr. Otjes said, and bolster his party’s already strong position in the House.

Mr. Wilders’s party easily became the biggest one after the Dutch elections in November. The victory by the Party for Freedom, which has advocated banning the Quran, closing Islamic schools and halting the acceptance of asylum seekers, was a clear rebuke to the country’s political establishment.

But since the election, Mr. Wilders has stepped away from some of his most extreme proposals.

And to ensure that he would adhere to the Constitution, the four parties took the unusual step of signing a document committing them to upholding it — something that had long been taken for granted.

The University of Chicago Press and Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society are pleased to announce the competition for the 2025 Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship. Named in honor of the founding editor of Signs, the Catharine Stimpson Prize is designed to recognize excellence and innovation in the work of emerging feminist scholars.

The Catharine Stimpson Prize is awarded biennially to the best paper in an international competition. Leading feminist scholars from around the globe will select the winner. The prizewinning paper will be published in Signs, and the author will be provided an honorarium of $1,000. All papers submitted for the Stimpson Prize will be considered for peer review and possible publication in Signs.

Eligibility: Feminist scholars in the early years of their careers (fewer than seven years since receipt of the terminal degree) are invited to submit papers for the Stimpson Prize. This includes current graduate students. Papers may be on any topic that falls under the broad rubric of interdisciplinary feminist scholarship. Submissions must be no longer than 10,000 words (including notes and references) and must conform to the guidelines for Signs contributors (see http://signsjournal.org/for-authors/author-guidelines/ ).

Extended Deadline for Submissions: June 15, 2024.
