How to choose a good thesis topic

Choosing a thesis topic is a difficult but essential step on your thesis journey. Your choice of topic not only determines the direction of your research but is also what needs to keep you motivated and satisfied throughout your thesis writing process.

To help you choose a good topic for your Bachelor’s or Master’s, here is our step-by-step guide on choosing a good thesis topic .

How to choose a good thesis topic - 5 essential steps

Step 1: Reflect and identify your research interests

At the beginning of your thesis journey reflect upon your research interests and personal passions .

What interesting research topics and subjects have consistently fascinated you throughout your studies? Think about your courses, readings, previous projects, and research papers that have inspired and sparked your curiosity in the past.

Use online thesis topic databases like Excelerate.dk to search for interesting topics created by other students and researchers. This way you explore new perspectives and ideas for your thesis project.

Remember, you’ll be spending a huge amount of time investigating and delving deep into your topic. It’s important that your topic genuinely excites you to keep you motivated while writing your thesis.

Step 2: Explore the current research landscape of your interest

Once you’ve identified your research topic interests, conduct a thorough literature review in your chosen research field .

Familiarise yourself with the existing research, ongoing debates and discussions, and potential gaps in the current knowledge. Look at recent publications, research paper topics, and emerging trends in the field.

This approach will not only help you gain a deeper understanding but also identify potential research questions or areas that require further exploration. Perhaps a thesis topic you could dig deeper into in your project?

Step 3: Consult with your academic supervisors and peers

By now you hopefully have a rough idea of the direction your thesis project is going. Discuss your research ideas and initial thoughts with your academic supervisor, professors, and fellow students to receive constructive feedback.

You shouldn’t hesitate to ask your academic advisors and peers for suggestions and recommendations. Their research expertise and knowledge can give you valuable insights to help you get started with your thesis.

Step 4: Define the research goals and objectives for your thesis

It’s time to clearly outline your project’s research goals and objectives . What are the specific questions you want to answer? What is the scope of your thesis? It’s essential that you are realistic about the resources and time available for your research.

You only have 6 to 12 months to write your thesis. Ensure that your thesis topic is not too broad or too narrow. Try to strike a balance that allows you for in-depth analysis within the scope of your research.

Step 5: Consider the practicality and feasibility of your thesis topic

At this point in the process, it’s time to assess the practicality and feasibility of your chosen thesis topic.

Are the necessary resources and data available to you? Do you for example have access to libraries, databases, laboratory equipment, search materials, and archives? Consider also your methodology for collecting the data. Will you need to conduct surveys, interviews, experiments, or collect historical data?

Data collection is time-consuming. It’s crucial that you have a clear plan for your data collection so you realistically obtain the data you need within the time frame of your thesis project.

Step 6: Get your thesis topic approved and begin writing

That’s the way to go! You’re now at the final step of choosing the best thesis topic for your project.

All you have to do now is consult with your thesis supervisor to make any final adjustments and get your thesis topic approved .

We wish you the best of luck with your thesis writing. We root for you!

“MBS Outstanding Thesis” – The Best Final Papers of 2021

February 25, 2022

The MBS Outstanding Theses 2021 of Munich Business School lying side by side on a table

Last year, four further theses produced by our MBS graduates were selected for inclusion in ‘ MBS Outstanding Thesis’, a series of working papers. This blog article introduces the outstanding final papers in 2021.

Whether at bachelor’s or master’s level, a thesis is more than just the final step towards completing a degree: it can also make a significant intellectual contribution to academic and societal discourse. Students at Munich Business School are no exception, conducting high-level research as part of their theses. However, given that it is not usually possible to have these papers published in academic journals, Munich Business School’s Prof. Dr. Bartholomae launched a series of working papers entitled ‘MBS Outstanding Thesis’. In the fall of 2020, the first installment in the series recognized and published the master’s thesis of MBA graduate Jiaojiao Zhao .

At the start of the 2021/22 academic year, MBS asked its professors to put forward exceptional theses for inclusion in the series. Submissions not only required excellent grades but also had to exhibit innovative approaches and methods and provide novel insights. One bachelor’s and three master’s theses stood out in particular and have been awarded the designation “MBS Outstanding Thesis”. The authors hail from Europe, Asia and South America – the topics they covered are similarly diverse and as broad-based as the university’s curriculum.

Here’s an introduction to the four outstanding theses:

The Implementation of Socially Sustainable Supply Chains in the German Natural Stone Industry Using the Example of Trade with India

In her bachelor’s thesis, Eva Maria Fröhlich investigated the social sustainability of supply chains in one of the few industries for which the recently passed Supply Chain Act does not apply. Focusing on the trade with India and using qualitative research methods, the author examined which concrete criteria and implementation strategies of social sustainability are relevant and currently beeing applied in the natural stone industry. She established the importance of strengthening the implementation of cooperative strategies and which criteria should be taken into account beyond the avoidance of child labor. Furthermore, she identified which communication strategies can be used to raise awareness among end customers and which legislative measures could provide essential support for socially sustainable supply chains. Case Study Concept for Microsoft to Support the Digital Transformation in German SMEs

Mauritius Freuding, who graduated from the master’s program in International Business , researched the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in the field of cloud computing. During his analysis of cloud computing, he also found ways to make this complex topic comprehensible to people who are not domain experts. In addition, Freuding developed a method of outlining the benefits of cloud computing for small and medium-sized enterprises. Microsoft has since adopted Freuding’s method as its standard procedure for adapting cloud computing solutions to the needs of SMEs – a ringing endorsement of his innovative approach. Esports Sponsorship Effectiveness on Brand Association and Purchase Intent

Yi-Chun Chen focused on this barely researched but highly topical field for her thesis as part of the MBA International Management program (the former name of the MBA program at MBS, renamed MBA General Management in 2019). She surveyed almost 400 Taiwanese gamers and analyzed the data she collected using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings? Attitudes towards the sponsor, the suitability of the event-sponsor fit, and the sponsor’s involvement in activities had a significant influence on gamers’ association with the brand and their intention to purchase a product from the sponsor. Brand association also plays an important role in forecasting purchase intention. Based on these insights, Chen also developed a number of highly instructive recommendations for both marketing professionals and further research. Click here to read the full paper.

The Emergence of Green Bonds as Innovative Financial Instruments

For his final paper in the MBA General Management program , Nicolas Penuela carried out a bibliometric analysis of the rise of green bonds as innovative financial instruments. He examined a dataset of 98 academic articles on green bonds published between 2008 and 2020. Using a qualitative filtration process, the MBA graduate initially analyzed controversial topics cited most frequently in the articles. Then, using a piece of software called Biblioshiny , he identified trends and gaps in green bonds research and divided his findings into three chronological phases, which allowed him to demonstrate how published articles developed over time. Finally, Penuela put forward a dynamic template for analyzing journal articles to help (future) academics to familiarize themselves with this new yet rarely used research discipline. This highly innovative topic is currently gaining considerable momentum in the field of sustainability. Click here to read the full paper.

Munich Business School would like to congratulate its graduates on these outstanding pieces of work! An overview of all final papers in the ‘MBS Outstanding Thesis’ working paper series can be found here .

⭐ What Does a Thesis in Economics Look Like?

A good thesis in economics is a blend between an empirical paper and a theoretical one. One of the essential steps in choosing a topic in economics is to decide which one you will write.

You may write, research, analyze statistical data and other information. Or build and study a specific economic model.

Or why not both!

Here are some questions you can ask when deciding what topic to choose:

  • What has already been written on this topic?
  • What economic variables will my paper study?
  • Where should I look for the data?
  • What econometrics techniques should I use?
  • What type of model will I study?

The best way to understand what type of research you have to do is to write a thesis proposal. You will most probably be required to submit it anyway. Your thesis supervisor will examine your ideas, methods, list of secondary and primary sources. At some universities, the proposal will be graded.

Master’s thesis and Bachelor’s thesis have three main differences.

After you get the initial feedback, you will have a clear idea of what to adjust before writing your thesis. Only then, you’ll be able to start.

📝 How to Select an Economics Thesis Topic

As your academic journey is coming to an end, it’s time to pick the right topic for your thesis. The whole academic life you were preparing to undertake this challenge.

Here is the list of six points that will help you to select an economics thesis topic:

  • Make sure it is something you are genuinely interested in. It is incredibly challenging to write something engaging if you are not interested in the topic. So, choose wisely and chose what excites you.
  • Draw inspiration from the previous student’s projects. A great place to start is by looking at what the previous students wrote. You can find some fresh ideas and a general direction.
  • Ask your thesis advisor for his feedback. Most probably, your thesis advisor supervised many students before. They can be a great help too because they know how to assess papers. Before meeting with your professor, do some basic research, and understand what topic is about.
  • Be original, but not too much. You do not want to spend your time writing about a project that many people wrote about. Your readers will not be interested in reading it, but your professors as well. However, make sure you do not pick anything too obscure. It will leave you with no secondary sources.
  • Choose a narrow and specific topic. Not only will it allow you to be more original, but also to master a topic. When the issue is too broad, there is just too much information to cover in one thesis.
  • Go interdisciplinary. If you find yourself interested in history, philosophy, or any other related topic, it can help you write an exceptional thesis in economics. Most of your peers may work on pure economics. Then, the interdisciplinary approach can help you to stand out among them.

Some universities ask their students to focus on topics from one discipline.

Bachelor and Master Thesis Topics

Project: digital innovation and transformation in retail, contact: prof. dr. jan recker.

Consumers have traditionally made purchase decisions at the store shelf, giving institutional brick-and-mortar retailers complete control over behavior, data, and preferences. This business model is now being digitally transformed: On the one hand, e-commerce, mobile shopping, sensor technologies, smart devices and artificial intelligence are but a few of digital innovations that threaten traditional retailers. On the other hand, digital technologies also present enormous potential for improvements and innovation within established, central operational routines. Particularly, in retail, negotiation processes, central purchase organization, and marketing strategies can benefit from current and emerging digital solutions.

Within this exciting context, students have the opportunity to work on thesis topics related in close collaboration with Edeka.Digital ( https://digital.edeka/ ). Possible research problems available for selection include

  • Artificial Intelligence as Source of Knowledge for supplier negotiation – Operational scenarios and Use for central buying units (Einsatzszenarien und Nutzenpotenzial künstlicher Intelligenz im LEH)
  • Supporting negotiation processes by using digital tools (IT-gestützte Optimierung des Verhandlungsprozesses im LEH)
  • From driven to driver/Taking the driver seat – Data Mining as a useful instrument for negotiation processes (Vom Getriebenen zum Treiber - Data Mining als Nutzenhebel im Verhandlungsprozess mit Lieferanten)
  • The Future Food Retail Industry
  • Cooperative Cloudsolution – Potential, Challenges and Responsibilities (Genossenschaftliche Cloudsystemlösung – Potenziale, Herausforderungen und Verantwortungsbereiche)

The thesis project will be completed in cooperation with the University of Hamburg and Edeka.Digital who will assist with supervising the project and providing access to cases, data, insights, and experts (interviewees). Thesis projects are available as a bachelor and master thesis project for students in business administration (all specializations), information systems, computer science, and industrial engineering. The scope and complexity of the thesis project will be defined accordingly. Preferred language will be German but theses can also be submitted in English.

Topic: Digitalizing Multisensory Experiences

Contact: Johanna Lorenz

The COVID-19 pandemic induced a massive disruption on societal as well as entrepreneurial life. Since “offline” multi-actor interactions have been inhibited due to containment measures, digitalizing related activities evolved as the medium of choice. The digitalization of multisensory experiential activities (MEA) such as culinary tastings or cooking workshops became emblematic for the disruption of the pandemic and initiated the genesis of an industry of digitalized MEAs. However, digitalizing these activities is challenging since their original participation stimulates a broad sensory spectrum that cannot be replicated completely by their digital counterpart. The question arises, how the quality of real-world multisensory experience can be provided through adequate digital design. In this context, also visionary technologies should be considered (e.g., holograph or VR technology) that exceed the technological affordances of current video-conferencing tools and might leverage the quality of multisensory experience.

Students can work on different topics related to digitalizing multisensory experiences using an appropriate research method of their choice. Topics are available as bachelor and master thesis projects for students in business administration (all specializations), information systems, computer science, and industrial engineering. The scope and complexity of the thesis project will be defined accordingly.

  • The digital MEA industry 2.0: Visionary design strategies to leverage multisensory experience in MEAs
  • Visionary communication technologies as enablers of multisensory experience in professional and private communication
  • Reflecting cognitive-affective processing in the digital design of multisensory experiences
  • Coined by the pandemic: Exploring the persistence of digitalized leisure in a post-pandemic world
  • Hybridity as an emerging concept during the pandemic in IS-related applications: classification, status quo, and its evolution towards a post-pandemic world
  • The temporal and structural morphology of business models that have been digitalized due to external disruptions
  • Multisensory learning in the context of digitalized MEAs: linking related theory (e.g., Cognitive Load Theory) to means of adequate product configuration

Writing Your Bachelor Thesis at Our Chair

Welcome to the assistant professorship of management analytics! Our research conducts research on data-driven business process management (BPM) by means of process mining and machine learning. We are interested in finding data-driven solutions to real-world BPM problems. Our main research focus topics are user behavior mining and the application of process mining techniques in practice, but we also supervise thesis topics in adjacent fields, such as the digitalization of BPM.

We’re happy to see that you apparently find our research interesting enough to think about writing a bachelor thesis at our chair.

Below you will find further information that you might need before writing your bachelor thesis.

Which requirements do I have to fulfil?

In principle, we only supervise bachelor theses if you have previous knowledge in process mining / business process management / data mining because otherwise the familiarization with the topic would take too much time.

If you have such prior knowledge (e.g. from lectures at the University of Mannheim, lectures during your semester abroad, internships, etc.), please outline it in your application.

Previous participation in the bachelor seminar (SM 458) is not compulsory, but an advantage.

How can I find a topic for my bachelor thesis?

If you have specific topic ideas or wishes , please include them in your application. This is optional, but very welcome. Ideally, such topic ideas have arisen in the context of a university course or a working student activity.

In the rare cases where we have concrete bachelor thesis topics available, you will find them on our website . Otherwise, we will find a topic together with you.

How can I apply for writing my bachelor thesis at the chair?

For applying, please send an e-mail with the following documents:

  • Motivation for writing a thesis at our chair (in the body of your e-mail)
  • Application documents (CV, Current Transcript of Records)
  • Concrete ideas for a thesis topic (if applicable, in the body of your e-mail)

Address your email to the member of the chair who you think best matches your interests (and your proposed topic, if applicable). To do this, check the websites and publication records. If you are not sure, you can also send your email to jpmac mail- mail.uni-mannheim.de .

A member of the chair will contact you. You will then be informed of all other regulations regarding bachelor theses by the supervising person.

How can I approach the research proposal?

Once you have agreed on a research topic for your thesis with your supervisor, you can start working on a detailed proposal. This proposal is very important because it sets the objectives and expectations of your thesis. You can expect that your proposal will go through multiple iterations before your supervisors accepts it. Only then you may only officially register your thesis. Working on a proposal is therefore not a commitment for supervising your thesis! There is always a chance (for you and for us) to decide against supervision if we feel that it’s not a good fit for one side.

The proposal should contain the following:

  • Motivation (context – problem – solution)
  • Objective of the thesis
  • Envisaged methodology
  • Existing literature

Are there any published bachelor or master theses that I can use for guidance?

No, there are no publicly available bachelor or master theses of our chair – and this is quite intentional. The general structure of scientific publications is always the same, but it is important to adapt this structure to the specific topic you are working on instead of following existing theses.

Do I have to participate in the thesis colloquium of the chair?

In addition to supervision, you are expected to participate in the chair's thesis colloquium,  which takes place jointly for bachelor and master students who write their thesis at our chair. The aim of the colloquium is to promote the exchange between students and to strengthen your presentation skills and feedback competences.

To this end,  you are expected to present your work  at least once . A good time to do this is around the middle of your editing period, when you already have a good idea of your topic but can still incorporate feedback.

Please adhere to the following time guidelines: Your  presentation  should have a duration of  10 minutes , followed by  10 minutes  of  Q&A .

Participation in the colloquium is mandatory during the editing period , even if you do not present. The colloquium usually takes place on the second last Thursday of the month. An invitation is sent separately to the respective students as soon as they officially registered for writing their theses.

The next dates are:

  • Thursday,  12/ 07/2023 , 1.45 p.m.
  • Thursday, 01/ 18/2024 , 1.45 p.m.  (takes place online !)
  • Thursday, 02/ 25/2024 , 1.45 p.m.
  • Thursday, 03/ 21/2024 , 1.45 p.m.
  • Thursday, 04/ 18/2024 , 1.45 p.m.
  • Thursday, 05/ 16/2024 , 1.45 p.m.
  • Thursday, 06/ 20/2024 , 1.45 p.m.

(Subject to change.)

Please also consider the guidelines for master theses , where you can find further helpful information and tips for writing your bachelor thesis.

Please note, however, that the arrangements with your supervisor are valid and may deviate from these guidelines.

bachelor thesis ideas business

Empirical researchers aim to find causal inferences – to what extent does a presumed cause lead to an effect or outcome. In entrepreneurship and innovation, empirical research is often conducted using secondary data. This data is usually cost-effective, instantly available, and sometimes the only viable option for specific research settings. An example may be: To what extent does spending in research and development (R&D) increase the likelihood of new product development in the upcoming years. However, data on R&D spending is not available for all firms since its reporting may be optional for the management of a firm. This may hinder empirical research because crucial observations may be missing causing a selection bias and getting the causation wrong – endogeneity – distorts the results. By identifying and applying statistical techniques and robustness tests in Stata, the validity of an empirical study can be significantly improved, e.g., the Heckman 2-stage estimation, control function, and impact threshold of a confounding variable ITCV.

Keywords: Heckman, Statistical Methods, Inference, Robustness

2. "Identifying top management team characteristics that affect green external venturing activity"

According to the upper echelon perspective, the experience of top management team (TMT) members shapes their views and ultimately their decision-making. Are their certain TMT characteristics that foster green external corporate venturing acticity (i.e. green M&A, green CVC, green alliances)?

3. "Innovation as Big Tech’s winning formula – Are the FAANG companies better than the old economy in innovating?"

The 2010s have seen the tremendous rise of technology companies in economic importance and stock prices. Five companies – namely Facebook (Meta), Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google (Alphabet) are particularly prominent and said to dominate their markets. How come? A recent stream of literature investigates the role of innovation for those companies’ success. This thesis aims to advance recent literature by comparing Big Tech’s innovation activity to that of the old economy. How do their innovations differ? Do Big Tech companies bring more radical innovations and breakthroughs to the market? This thesis aims at addressing those questions empirically building upon existing data and approaches.

Keywords: Innovation, Technology, Digitalization, Firm Performance

4. "Digital Health and Innovation in healthcare"

The digitalisation of healthcare has been one of the main drivers of innovation in the healthcare sector, and not just since the Corona pandemic. An increasing number of digital solutions are in development or are being introduced into the German health market under the term Digital Health Application (DiGa). In the context of these developments, we examine the role of start-ups and established companies in this development. Further research questions are the origin of innovations and their penetration in the market. Which go-to-market strategies exist and which of them are suitable for start-up-related innovations. The starting point for these studies is a broad quantitative database, which we are constantly expanding. See Research Group – Digital Ecosystems for further information.

5. "Hit or hype? Digital technologies shaking up today's economic landscape"

Digital transformation is shaking up the value chains of companies in all industries. An unprecedented number of new technologies are entering the market, e.g. artificial intelligence or blockchain. The impact of these technologies on our economy today, but also on social life in general, needs to be explored intensively. Theses in this area investigate these interrelationships with different methodological approaches, e.g. literature reviews, surveys, secondary data analysis.

Keywords: Digital Technology, Digital Transformation, Firm Performance

9. "Differentiating technologies for dealing with climate change - A systematic literature review"

As the world confronts the escalating challenges of climate change, climate change adaptation and adoption technologies are coming into the spotlight. We want to understand the focus of companies in their development efforts and how research has addressed the topic in the past. In this paper, a systematic literature review according to Tranfield (2003) is carried out to examine the two types of technology in more detail. Hereby, the analysis focuses on the patent class Y02. The evaluation of the current research landscape will thus help to understand the respective focal points and identify possible research gaps.

The industrial landscape for the recycling of traction batteries is currently reshaping itself. This is resulting in various possible business models along the recycling chain for traction batteries. In addition to the depth of added value of the individual players, the ownership structure of the valuable raw materials also plays a key role. As part of the thesis, a systematic literature review will be conducted to identify which business models are already established today.
