Some students take a year off between school and university, to work or to travel. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages? OR

It is common practice for some students to take a gap year after graduating high school to work and/or travel. What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Band 9.0 Model Essay:

It is true these days that many high school leavers choose to start their work or take a trip before going to university. While a gap year can bring some immediate drawbacks, I am convinced that it is more likely to have long-term benefits for their lives.

On the one hand, young students are very likely to encounter several difficulties when delaying their university study. One of these problems is the delay in academic progress caused by spending one year off school. It is understandably almost impossible for young people to enjoy their experiences in doing a job or travelling to a new place but still arrange a certain amount of time for revision. As a result, gap-year takers may have to face the challenge of becoming familiar with the knowledge at school again, receiving more pressure of catching up with their peers. Besides, the life outside the university campus may prove to be mentally and physically overwhelming for inexperienced school leavers. They, for instance, may be at risk of being exploited in an exhausting job or face potential dangers on their trips to a new country. If not well prepared for such possible obstacles, young high school graduates can suffer from unintended consequences.

On the other hand, I would argue that these disadvantages are outweighed by the positive effects. A gap year is an ideal opportunity for students to learn about what is not taught at university. Working with other people who are experts in a particular field can give these newcomers not only an understanding of the job but also valuable practical lessons to help them become more mature. When it comes to applying for a position in a company, employers tend to favourably consider applicants who possess extensive experience in life and the occupation. Furthermore, in terms of recreation, having a year to relax can be advantageous as students can have a chance to relieve stress in study. With a comfortable and willing attitude, undergraduates can acquire knowledge more effectively in comparison with those who go to university right away.

In conclusion, despite some negative aspects, it seems to me that the benefits of a gap year are more significant for the reasons mentioned.

  • Peer (n): a person who is the same age, or has the same social position or the same abilities as other people in a group. ==>In some developing Asian countries such as Vietnam, baby girls are usually less appreciated than their peers due to the remnants of feudalism that favoured men more than women.
  • Overwhelming (adj): too great or large for somebody ==>High school students in Vietnam, ranging from primary to high school ones, are obliged to learn an overwhelming amount of knowledge at school, not to mention loads of homework and other extra classes.

IELTS Writing Task 2: an advantage-disadvantage essay on taking a gap year before starting university education; with plans and model answer

This IELTS Writing Task 2 post offers the insights of writing a great answer to an advantage-disadvantage essay . This task 2 question asks the candidates to provide their personal opinions on taking a gap year before starting university education. In this post, you will find a plan that can help you to write this answer effectively along with a mind-map or brainstorming ideas .  You will also find a great 7.5-band model answer written by two candidates who took my IELTS Writing Correction Service . I am hopeful that these answers can help you construct your own answers for other opinion topics.

Let’s have a look at the question first.

In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this.

What kind of essay structure should you follow?

In most IELTS Writing Task 2 essays, a 4-paragraph structure is followed. For this specific problem-solution essay, we should also follow a 4-paragraph essay structure.

Paragraph 1: Introduction (Introduce the topic with some background information and your thesis on the topic in 40/60 words)

Paragraph 2: (Explain the advantages – with examples in around 120-130 words)

Paragraph 3: (Explain the disadvantages – with examples in around 120-130 words)

Paragraph 4: (Conclude the essay with a personal opinion on what decision can be made about taking gap year – 40/50 words)

How to plan for your answer to a descriptive topic:

When you start writing your task 2 answers, what strategies do you follow? Do you have a plan that you arrange beforehand and apply it accordingly?

It is always a very good idea to plan before you write something; even it takes 5/7 minutes of your time. A good plan reduces your pressure of real-time thinking and writing together. It also improves your power of thinking and arranging ideas. So, utilize the opportunity of thinking beforehand and take some necessary notes that can help you to present your thoughts in an organized way.

For this kind of opinion topic, we need to analyze the question and try to understand what the task requirements are. Let’s look at this question again and find out what they want us to write:

As you can see, there are two points on this topic and we should answer the question effectively by explaining the advantages and disadvantages . We should also remember to write a minimum of 250 words to illustrate our ideas, thoughts, suggestions etc.

So, here is a plan that I’ve made to establish my ideas, thoughts, and suggestions. You can do the same by doing some brainstorming and taking some notes. You need not be accurate to do this, just put down your thoughts and do some regular practice.

Now, let’s have a look at the plan:

Description of the pros and cons of taking a gap year before starting university education:.

Advantages of taking gap year:

  • Expand horizons by traveling new places; learn about new customs and cultures
  • Learn about the value of hard-work; change of perspective about being lavish

Disadvantages of taking gap year:

  • Feel homesick; miss family and friends
  • Earning money makes disillusionment about studies; risking job career.

Now, here is a model answer prepared by an IELTS candidate who scored 7.5 in IELTS Writing. In my opinion, the answer is quite organized and you can easily get a band score of 7.5 or more if you write your answers like this one.

Model answer:

Many people in various nations of the world advocate taking a year gap with the purpose of working or traveling before embarking on one’s third-level education. While this offers a number of benefits, there are also some pitfalls which are worth considering.

Traveling or working before starting university education includes two primary advantages. At the initial point, young learners will be able to expand their horizons through visiting different places. When students set out for their overseas journey, they will be eventually open to the elements of different cultures and customs. This will provide them with a deeper perceptive of the world as a result. Besides, students who decide to work for 12 months ahead of their university classes will be taught to realize the value of earning money due to the fact that they will appreciate the struggle involved here. As a consequence, they will be able to control their desire to spend money lavishly and may become more selective in spending the hard-earned money in a more productive way.

On the flip side, some drawbacks of taking a gap year must not be ignored. Primarily, traveling is a well-documented reason of homesickness and many students, who have not been apart from their loved ones before, may pine for these people and if the case gets more serious, they may even turn out to be troubled and depressed. Moreover, students earning a handsome amount of money may suffer from disillusionment to return to their studies because they may take pleasure in becoming financially independent and growing some sort of self-identity. Hence, they may jeopardize their future career as in recent times it is vital for every person to graduate with a good degree in order to compete in the job market or business world.

To conclude, gaining invaluable experience and learning to become more independent in relation to money are the prime benefits of taking a gap year. Nonetheless, young learners may also feel homesick and wind up discontinuing their studies. In my opinion, weighing the advantages against the drawbacks carefully before coming to a decision is crucial or students may go for an extremely risky adventure.

Gap Year Advantages Disadvantages IELTS Essay

In recent days, it is quite common for young adults having a break time after graduating from secondary school. It is not the case of rich people choosing travelling as a destination while poor young adults prefer to work in spite of entering university for a period of time. I personally believe that there will be a number of positives and drawbacks in both cases.

The reasons for this issue may involve the recognition of restricting knowledge and experiences in entering university studies, comparison with deciding to work or take a journey which will give a broader view of life. The young adult will be better on the resources of the personal life because for both cases are able to develop them as the independent people. Students deciding work or explore the beauty of world definitely gain some practical experiences and recognise the meaning of life rather than spending much time with some papers or plenty of assignments.

On the other hand, the disadvantages of both cases perhaps make people not interested again in continuing their study. They may end their study because of enjoying their daily life. Moreover, they may face some problems in adapting academic environment after spending a lot of time in work field or adventures. Therefore they probably think that it is better to pursue a career in particular jobs or do something different which can make this life full of colours in spite of studying in university. However, it will be less of people deciding break because to obtain a better future academic qualification as a primary of requirements.

In conclusion, having off time for young adults after graduating secondary school is not a wrong decision. They may argue that spending time for gaining greater experiences is one way to enjoy this life before coming to the environment which has many differences from the previous study.

In Many Countries Students Take Year Gap IELTS Essay

Nowadays, it has become a trend to take a year off before going to university or college for travelling or work, however, this trend has a number of benefits and drawbacks which I shall discuss in upcoming paragraphs.

Relaxation is, first of all, one of the leading benefits of travelling which is utterly important for students. The competition level in education is truly stiff, which is why, they have a lot of burden on their Shoulders and in order to kill this and perform better in further education, travelling is simply the best remedy. Secondly, by working after higher school, they can get practical experience about their education. It can be seen that nowadays to get a job in MNCs, student not only has to carry the appropriate level of education but also practical experience of that particular field. ieltsxpress

ieltsxpress preply IELS tutors starting from usd 5 per hour

On the other hand, the major disadvantage of taking a short break amid study is, it derails students. It has been seen several times that once young ones put their efforts into their work, after some time they feel enable to concentrate on education. Besides this, due to gaping one year to travel or work, these students attend universities later than their current peers. The gap in ages might be a difficulty for them to fit in and to make new friends. For example, I was once the older in my class, and it was very hard for me to talk to my classmates because of differences in viewpoints.

Overall, taking one year off for work or travelling has both positives and negatives, on the positive side; it can provide relaxation and practical experience which can be beneficial in education while, on the negative side, it can divert students and keep them away from their friends. Gap Year IELTS Essay

The contemporary era is an era of modernization, students have more choices about how they can improve their skills in higher education. Therefore, different types of learners have a tendency to spend time at an interval of time so that they can make a living or travel something. I would argue that the benefits of taking a gap year may outweigh the drawbacks.

To begin with, we should think about travel and work during this period, which really makes us enrich ourselves with absorbing knowledge. To be more specific, if we visit many places and come into contact with different traits, we will have the opportunity to access a variety of cultural conditions, which we can perceive as an accelerating trend in our cognitive range. Furthermore, break not only helps us to open our mind but also helps us to outline our future schedule. For instance, whenever we stop and think about our shortcomings, we are being better prepared for our future careers. IELTXpress.com

However, taking a break from formal schooling has its drawbacks. Simply put, according to a recent study by BBC News, we would tend to relax when we settling down after 12th grade. So, we get so easily haunted that we might just give up on the road to success because of the tempting entertainment. On the other hand, I still believe that the merits of a different period will outperform the demerits.

To sum up, taking an opportunity after the previous class gives us more opportunities to thrive rather than squander our resources. However, only when we effectively use the break between two types of learning can we benefit from it. ielt s xpre s s

IELTS Essay on Gap Year

Some people are in favour of students taking a gap year before university, while others believe such a break in education is disruptive. I believe that while there are arguments in favour of both views, that students benefit more from continuing their education straight from secondary to tertiary level.

On one side of the argument, a gap year provides opportunities for work experience, personal development and a period of relaxation away from the stresses of full-time education. High-school students are subjected to enormous pressure to achieve high grades, particularly in Asia, meaning that leisure time is practically non-existent and young people have little chance to indulge in hobbies or recreational activities After-school classes, summer schools and exam preparation courses also prevent many high-school students from engaging in sports which can develop teamwork and leadership skills, or from travel which allows them to gain cultural awareness and to develop as individuals. A gap year would provide just such opportunities.

Furthermore, work experience either in paid employment or in a voluntary capacity would give students practical skills, a sound work ethic and an appreciation of the value of money they have earned themselves. Such experiences help students to become more rounded individuals, enhance their CVs when they apply for scholarships or work after graduation and provide employers with valuable insight into an individual’s aptitude, personality and ambitions.

On the other side of the argument, many students returning from a break in academic study find it very difficult to adjust to university life, give up their ideas of a higher education altogether, or waste their gap year in worthless activities. Starting a university course after a year’s break is difficult. Gap-year students are a year behind their high-school friends and have forgotten many of the lessons learned in school, or indeed, how to study at all. Many also miss the income from unskilled gap-year jobs and decide that they would rather have money now than wait for a better salary later, prompting some to abandon their scholarly ambitions altogether. In the Philippines, for example, some students are enticed into non-skilled jobs with attractive salaries, forgetting that what they can earn after graduation will, in the long run, provide far better financial security. There are also many high school students who start a gap-year with good intentions, but fail to find work or a worthwhile activity and end up wasting their time – something they find hard to explain to future employers. ielt s xpress

In conclusion, while some students may profit from taking a gap year, I am convinced that for the majority of students a year’s break is detrimental to both their educational progress and their final careers.

Advantages Disadvantages of Gap Year IELTS Essay

Taking a gap year off between high school and the university has become a popular choice for many students. There are a number of common ways they utilise this time; such as travelling abroad, volunteering or working. I personally believe that this kind of experience should be recommended to students more actively since they can offer youngsters several benefits.

Spending time outside of school indicates that students can encounter opportunities to interact with people who they are not used to communicating with. Foreigners they meet while travelling overseas or colleagues from volunteering and work enable them to develop exceptional social skills to talk to others with cultural, racial or age differences. Such experiences can subsequently motivate them to be a more confident and outgoing person, which is believed to help them establish a solid social network.

Another distinctive advantage that a gap year break can give to students is a time to try out different types of practical work. Many teenagers graduate from high school without having clear occupational plans. However, participating in work experience programs or working part-time before starting university can broaden their perspectives on career choices. An exemplary case can be illustrated by looking at my sister, who spent six months teaching English in Cambodia during her gap year. While she was looking after the disadvantaged local kids, she developed a desire to work for international charity organisations and she enrolled in an international studies degree.

In conclusion, I am convinced that the society should encourage more high school graduates because the process of establishing social skills and trials on different jobs can provide them with invaluable life experiences. IELT S XPRESS

IELTS WRITING TASK 2

taking a gap year ielts essay

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write at least 250 words about the following topic:

In many countries, there is a growing trend of encouraging young individuals to take a gap year, either for work or travel, after completing high school and before starting their university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this choice for young people.

Sample Answer, C1 English Level, Advanced, Band Score 6.5-7.5

  • Paraphrase the topic description: Encouraging young individuals to take a gap year after high school is a growing trend in many countries.
  • State the main opinion or idea: This choice presents both advantages and disadvantages for young people.
  • Support the main opinion: Gap year offers opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery.
  • Provide an example from personal experience: Engaging in work or travel experiences can broaden worldview and develop practical skills.
  • Support the main opinion: Gap year may pose challenges in terms of academic readiness and motivation.
  • Provide an example from personal experience: Some students might struggle to resume studies after a year off, potentially leading to loss of focus and momentum.
  • Summarize the body paragraphs: Taking a gap year has both positive and negative implications for young individuals.
  • Restate the main opinion: Making an informed choice based on individual goals and circumstances is crucial in deciding whether a gap year is suitable.

The growing trend of advocating for young individuals to take a gap year after completing high school before starting university studies has become more prominent in various countries. From my personal perspective, I believe that this choice can offer both advantages and disadvantages to young people.

On one hand, taking a gap year can provide young individuals with valuable opportunities for personal growth and self-discovery. By engaging in work or travel experiences, they can gain practical skills, independence, and a broader worldview. For instance, during my gap year, I volunteered in a foreign country, which not only allowed me to contribute to a meaningful cause but also exposed me to diverse cultures and perspectives.

On the other hand, there might be drawbacks to taking a gap year, particularly in terms of academic readiness and motivation. Some young people might find it challenging to resume their studies after a year of hiatus, potentially leading to a loss of momentum and focus. Additionally, financial constraints could limit the possibilities for those who wish to travel or pursue certain gap year opportunities.

In conclusion, the decision to take a gap year after high school can have both positive and negative implications for young people. It provides a chance for personal development and enriching experiences but could also pose challenges in terms of academic continuity and financial considerations. Ultimately, making an informed choice based on individual goals and circumstances is crucial in determining whether a gap year is the right path to embark upon.

The increasing trend of encouraging young individuals to take a gap year after completing high school and before starting university has sparked debates worldwide. This essay will explore the advantages and disadvantages of this choice for young people, based on personal experiences and knowledge.

Taking a gap year can be a valuable opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery. Youngsters can use this time to travel, volunteer, or work, gaining real-world experiences that can shape their character and broaden their horizons. For instance, during my own gap year, I volunteered in a rural community, which not only exposed me to different cultures but also instilled a sense of empathy and social responsibility.

Moreover, a gap year can help young people gain clarity about their future goals and career aspirations. Many students feel pressured to choose a university major without truly understanding their interests and passions. By taking a gap year, they have the chance to explore various fields, make informed decisions, and enter university with a clearer sense of purpose.

On the other hand, a gap year may present certain drawbacks. Some individuals might find it challenging to resume their academic pursuits after a year-long break, as they may lose the momentum and study habits developed during high school. Additionally, financial constraints can be a concern, as not everyone can afford to travel or volunteer without a steady income.

Furthermore, there is a risk that some young people might fall into the trap of procrastination during their gap year, losing focus on their educational goals altogether. Without proper planning and guidance, the gap year might not yield the desired outcomes, and students could find themselves adrift without a clear path.

In conclusion, a gap year can be both advantageous and disadvantageous for young individuals. It provides opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and gaining valuable experiences, which can positively impact their future. However, the risk of losing academic momentum and financial constraints should not be overlooked. Ultimately, the decision to take a gap year should be well-considered and aligned with individual aspirations and circumstances.

The increasing trend of promoting gap years for young individuals after high school but before university studies is prevalent in many countries. In my view, this choice has both merits and drawbacks for young people.

On one hand, taking a gap year can provide valuable opportunities for personal and academic growth. By engaging in work or travel experiences, young individuals can gain practical skills, enhance their independence, and broaden their horizons. For example, during my gap year, I worked as an intern in a nonprofit organization, which not only helped me develop professional skills but also allowed me to explore my interests before committing to a university major.

On the other hand, there are potential downsides to taking a gap year. Some young people might struggle to re-adapt to an academic environment after a year off, leading to a loss of motivation and academic momentum. Additionally, financial constraints may limit the options for those who wish to pursue travel or certain gap year programs.

In conclusion, the decision to take a gap year after high school can have both positive and negative consequences for young people. While it can offer enriching experiences and personal growth, it also carries the risk of academic challenges and financial limitations. Ultimately, making an informed choice based on individual goals and circumstances is crucial in determining whether a gap year is the right path to take.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample: Gap year between university and college

gap year between high school and university

In some countries, young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decided to do this .

High school graduates are sometimes advised to take a gap year before they begin their tertiary education. While there are certain benefits for young people in doing so, the disadvantages of leaving school for a year should be considered as well.

Students who find it rewarding to take a gap year often claim that it provides them with invaluable benefits and lessons. Simply put, by working and earning money before they embark on academic studies, students will find it much easier to manage the high expenses and tuition fees of their university. This results in students being more focused on their studies due to having no financial worries and therefore scoring higher in their courses. In addition, the ones who opt to travel gain life experience. For instance, in my country, many high school graduates travel to Japan, a country known for its people’s high life expectancy. This way, they learn about the Japanese’s healthy lifestyle and are encouraged to adopt their practices upon their return. Thus, traveling during the gap year might help students become wiser and make better choices in order to lead a better life.

However, spending a year away from their studies may not always end with students returning to school. For instance, many graduates start a job during this period and when they start gaining financial benefits, they find it more appealing to gain money instead of spending most of their days studying. In other words, they begin to think that university is not the best doorway to success in real life. As for those who travel, despite having gained a lot of life experience, some of them might realize that  they have forgotten many of the concepts, such as mathematics, that are required to succeed during tertiary education.  This fear of failure, unfortunately, is enough for many students to let go of their academic dreams and steer the course of their lives and careers away from univerities.  This fear of failure, unfortunately, is enough for many students to let go of their academic dreams and change the course of their lives and careers.

In conclusion, working or traveling for a year after high school graduation may help students with their financial stading or outlook on lifer. Having said that the possibility of it leading to disenchantment with education is too significant to ignore.

Some people believe that students should acquire working experience during their gap year instead of traveling.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Some feel that if a student decides to take a gap-year it is better to work than to travel. I am generally in agreement with this proposition as it will better prepare individuals to choose a university major.

Those who argue in favor of travel contend that after school, individuals may be too busy to travel for an extended period. Graduates must typically either begin applying for graduate school or for positions in the workforce. Once a person has a job, they will then only have limited time for holidays, most of which they are likely to spend with family. This is why many high school graduates take advantage of the freedom before university to explore exotic destinations that require long flights like countries in Southeast Asia and South America.

However, there is immense value in work experience that can inform one’s future career choices. Most students are ill-equipped to make a career choice at the age of 18 and this is reflected in the number of graduates who switch jobs and never establish a career in their field of study. By working for a year, not only will students have a firmer understanding of the challenges of the typical workweek, but they might also gain perspective as to what kind of work they enjoy. For instance, a prospective film student who interns at a film studio may decide that they would prefer to work in a less stressful environment and subsequently change majors.

In conclusion, despite the singular opportunity to travel that a gap-year provides, it is more important to work and learn one’s career inclinations. There could naturally also be some balance between work and travel.

Obtaining working experience and utilizing the time to travel becoming the two main options that students consider the most in their gap year of study. Despite the enjoyment in exotic countries, I am generally in agreement with gaining work experience will allow students to have better preparation for choosing a university major.

A stereotype impression for most is that people spent a big part of their life dedicated to their career, in other words, argue in the most leisure period of a human being is likely to take place in the study stages. Subsequently, some will favor having a break for travel during the gap year. Exploring the world with own eyes provides benefits to students, not only widen their perspective point of view, vision and attitude in a global level, the travel experiences can also allow opportunities for students to improve their abilities on independently working, problem-solving and interpersonal relationships handling, that might not be able to acquire from schools in their hometowns. However, the general experiences from the traveling time in the gap year do not outweigh the advantages of an on-the-job training period that indicates a clear vision for students’ future.

Fully utilizing the gap year of study in a way of being trainees in a company or two can give students thorough ideas of their future career. It can also help to deal with the issue of unemployment amongst youth overall. Some research found that some of the graduates depressed on the first few years after they started their career, as they are not likely to feel motivated due to the types of work, that they are working on are not what they desired, and eventually lead to resignation. This could be a result of superficial choices for major in college and university. In contrast, on-the-job training experiences during a gap year can provide in-depth ideas for the students, clearly knowing what they are interested in can assist them to have careful consideration for future study. Furthermore, it can result in a decrease in unemployment rate amongst graduates.

In conclusion, both traveling, and on-job training experiences are valuable to students and deliver positive impacts and inspirations, I personally claim that focusing on specific working experiences can provide better concepts for their career and turn out to be a reduction in the unemployment rate of the nations.

taking a gap year ielts essay

In my opinion , you need to come down , honestly saying, ur essay is just a page of complicated words and it is hard to find ur direct answer to exact question , i don't know if i have spelling mistake or not but i am sure that u now know my opinion about ur essay . This matters .
Jul 12, 2014

I think your essay is too high-class which is far beyond the understanding of beginners. You can write your essay in simple sentences.
Jul 18, 2014

Unfortunately I think the comments above are correct.

You look like you are trying to use lots of complex words, but they are not all used correctly and it is sometimes unclear what your point is.

You do need to simplify things.

Did you plan before you wrote the essay?

You need to plan carefully - decide what each idea will be to support your point and use examples to explain it further.

Take a look at some of the writing lessons for Task 2 on this page:

Sep 03, 2014

its true that some of the sentences are long and some of the words are complicated. It would be better to make it simple and clear to score better ielts marks.
Sep 17, 2014

Yes am agree with all who commented before that your words are tough to understand...Like i just wants to write an essay for my Language paper but could not understand the mean of your words..
Sep 26, 2014

hi. i believe that ur essay lacks proper ideas. u talked too much out of topic and put emphasis only on structure and words.the main priority for u should be appropriate idea and a little support of it
Oct 02, 2014

hi i am beginner, i want to ask the question that in writing essay should i use simple words or high vocabulary. because some people say that we should use high vocabulary

Oct 02, 2014

Hi,

You should do what is within your ability. There is no point in using 'high level' vocabulary if you are going to make lots of mistakes.

You are likely to get a better score if you use words that you know you can properly.

Keep learning new vocabulary and practice with it but be careful in the test.
Nov 21, 2014

Should give 3 or 4 examples too??
Jan 07, 2015

hello, I agree with your point that there should be equal no. of men and women in universities. I am afraid that your way of presenting your ideas is not comprehensive.

we should try to write as many positive points in support of our arguments in the given word limit and cut down useless info that the examiner is supposed to be least interested in ( like your first paragraph. you should add in more positive effects which the proposed suggestion will lead to. like societal perspective will change, equal opportunity, greater understanding b/w men and women etc.

I hope you understood my point didn't take me wrong.

:)
all the best
Apr 27, 2015

Yes I agree with the comments above....it's a bit complex need to plan the essay in a easy way
Jul 18, 2015

There is no doubt that we need to use less common vocabulary. But problem with you is that you are using complex words unnecessarily.

You need to make your points understandable. If you are saying something, you must elaborate.

An essay is not just to show that you know difficult words. Difficult words are necessary but when required.

Try to read your topics on google. Acquire some knowledge.

hopes you will like
Sep 02, 2015

its difficult to understand because you mix difficult word
Sep 02, 2015

not so bad
Nov 03, 2015

Hi everyone...
i read this easy. it seems there are some difficult wording in it and the use of difficult wording is not understandable for the learners.
and other thing that i wanna share, you used lengthy sentences.
Nov 18, 2015

hey..... friend....you use high vocabulary and know one student anderstand so use simple word and i think u shoud re-write and solve your small small mistake.
Dec 29, 2019

Too good

Ratio of Male and Female Students

by Rachel - butterflyB908

Universities should take the same number of men and women in each major. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Many people feel that both females and males should be in equal number when attending a course at an educational institution. I am inclined to disagree with this statement. Due to gender equality most people feel that everyone should be given equal rights, but it strikes me that this is not the case. To begin with, It seems to me that women have always been treated inferior to men, it has been a struggle through the years for them to stand out and not be judged by people for what they do for a living. And I can say that the same goes for men. Why males cannot be stay at home dads? Why females cannot be football players or engineers without people judging them? Having the same number of man and women in each class seems like a good idea, that way all of them have equal chances to stand out and pursue their dreams regardless their gender. Nevertheless, to my way of thinking this measure solves the problem of gender equality but creates another issue. It is true that people should be treated the same, but, a University is the place where people are accepted for their intelligence, their character and ambition. For instance, it is not fair to take an equal number of females and males when maybe the male candidates are better, or the female ones. It is a matter of who deserves the place, that should be the only criteria. All things considered , I firmly believe that Feminism is about people being treated equal. It is not fair to anyone if opportunities are taken form men and given to women or vice-versa. Everyone should fight for what they want and forget about all the stereotypes that stop us from achieving our goals. Please comment on my essay

Free Education for All

by naomi chisi (Cork)

There are many benefits to a good education. Therefore, a university education should be offered to all students, not just students with good high school grades. Do you agree or disagree? A good education opens many doors, hence tertiary education is important and should be offered to everyone who is willing to learn. This essay will discuss the reason why university education is essential and should be provided to all students. First of all, society only offer tertiary education to students who do well with their high school diploma. Although, this makes some students to work extra hard so that, they are accepted to university of their choice. However, I personally agree that university education should have been offered to everyone who is willing to learn regardless what the outcome of the high school grades were? Education itself is a key to many opportunity a person can have. Being educated not only does it open many doors for the individual? But it also makes a person to think and act appropriate. There are many advantages for having university education. For example, nowadays when you apply for the job almost on any application form there is a question of highest education level. The highest education level you have the better chances for you to be given the job. Furthermore, community always admire a person who is educated, not only are you respected by many people but you can be a role model to the young generation. Beside, being educated can take you places you always wanted to go. Travelling around the global not only are you seeing places, but you are able to learn other culture from differences society. This can help a person to be open minded and see things different. And finally, education at the end of the day make the world a better place for everyone. *** Essay on Free Education for All Students - Comment below to help this student improve their IELTS writing score.

Essay on Taking a Second Degree

by Aim (Bangkok)

Graduates who cannot find work in their chosen fields should be advised to do a second degree, rather than taking a job that does not interest them. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Nowadays, more and more students graduate from universities each years. Some of them get the job they want, but others cannot join their desired position. While some graduates willingly work in an unwanted job, I would argue that they should enroll and complete their second degree in order to get the perfect position for them. Some people believe that graduated students should work and live by their own salary after they finish their degree, despite getting an uninteresting job. Two main reasons should be given to support this point of view. First, some parents think that it is waste of time to finish the second degree, and that their children should get a job to gain their own earnings. Second, some successful people in the world haven't worked in their firstly desired job, so they have tried many jobs before they find which position is perfectly fitting to them. On the other hand, some people advocate that graduates who are not be hired in their field of study should register for a second degree. They believe that if students cannot get their suitable job, this mean that there are too many students who graduated from that field of study. For example, there are more than 10 thousand engineer students who finish their degree in Thailand each year. Therefore, graduates should study a second field in order to be different and get a better job. To sum up, although it is true that students who get an unwanted job could get their desired job in the end, students that choose to study a second degree would get a better chance to find the job. Second degree-graduates definitely have wider knowledge to apply to many different tasks. This could be an advantage for them to gain a position they want. *** Provide feedback for this Essay on Taking a Second Degree to Find the Right Job below. Restricting University Entry

by Anandita Rizki (Indonesia)

University education should be restricted to the very best academic students, rather than being available to a large proportion of young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree? At the entrance university examination, the prospective students’ application mainly selected based on their overall academic performance at high school. It is argued that higher education only provided to the youngsters who have an outstanding academic performance. As a result, only low percentage of young generation can attend university. In my opinion, I believe that it should be accessible to everyone. The term of outstanding academic performer can lead to an injustice judgement. Genetic factor plays an important role in developing a smart person. But this factor is not enough. In fact, intelligence is affected by many factors which strongly related to how much money you invest. This can be ranged from simple to complicated things. Brain needs nutritious foods as well as supplements to develop well even since we are at our fetus stage. Thus, we obviously have to increase our budget to fulfill this kind of needs. Other factor is the education facilities that we can afford such as schools, tutors, and books. Its price often followed by its quality. The more we pay, the more we are likely to get high quality. All of this can only be afforded by the richs. The poors experience difficulty in providing the nutritious foods and education facilities for their children. As a consequence, the group which comprises of very best students at school often belong to the richs. However, nowadays many scholarships are available for the poors. They can successfully graduated. In fact, there are many cases that their life a way much better if they have their university degree. When the restriction is imposed, they don’t have the equal right to pursue their degree in tertiary education. Education is a long-term investment for the future of a nation. Its benefits are going back to the whole society. By giving an equal chance, there will be more population that hold their university degree. Each person give their best effort because they have a skill in particular area which they had acquired in university. They can be seen as the country’s assets to improve the quality of its human resources and, moreover, accelerate its economic development. To sum up, I completely disagree that the university is merely an exclusive place for those who marked as an outstanding student. However, everyone is capable in pursuing their degree. Therefore, higher education should be provided for all. *** Help this IELTS candidate by commenting below on their IELTS essay about Restricting University to the Best Academic Students

IELTS Essay: Taking a Gap Year

by Prachi Rao

Taking a Gap Year

Taking a Gap Year

In some countries young people are encouraged to work and travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this. In various nations younger population is being motivated to take a gap year in order to gain some work experience or travel around before they start with their further college education. In this essay we will be focusing on advantages of this situation as well as the disadvantages that come along. To start with the advantages, younger education today is more motivated to gain a global experience. They do not want themselves to be restricted to the local area experience they are being provided with, rather they want to explore the world and try learning about the work culture and other aspects. Now as we know it is quite important to have knowledge about the field one is going to work in, work experience will definitely help them grow and flourish in that area as real life scenario can be much different than what is being taught in books. Moving on to the disadvantages, though it is important to gain some knowledge of the real world and travel around, it is also important to get done with your university education in order to land the perfect job depending on the course one opts for in university. Secondly, some people are not mentally strong to live apart from their family and might end up getting homesick. Which can ruin their whole idea of the gap year. To summarize, taking a drop year has certain advantages it also has some possible drawbacks which should be taken into account before making the decision as these years most certainly makes up for our future.

Accepting Male and Female Students

by bhowmick (USA)

Universities should accept equal number of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree. Education is considered backbone of a nation. It is also an important element of human life. No nation can develop and prosper unless properly educated. However, both men and women are equally considered to contribute national achievement. Hence, to ensure empowerment and gender discrimination I believe that the universities should offer equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. The main reason I support the notion that the tertiary institutes should accept equal number of boys and girls is to eliminate gender discrimination. In many countries in the world especially in western countries both men and women enjoy equal degree of freedom in all aspect of life. Unfortunately, this is not the same in third world countries. In fact there is an opposite picture exists especially in poor nations where male dominate in most of the aspects. For instance, in some nations male doctors are not allowed to inspect and treat female patients and thus the authorities give preference in female candidates in those subjects. Whereas in developed world there is virtually no sex differentiation and pupils can get admitted any subjects they are interested in. What I want to highlight here is that if educational institutions pick equal number of students from both gender it will not only eliminate impartiality that might exist once graduates enter employment but also equalize the balance between male and female employees. The other reason I strongly believe that all educational institutes should take the same number of male and female candidates is due to gender empowerment. As we are aware that female candidates may have more attraction to nursing programs whereas male candidates may be interested in sport. This way it might bring inequality of gender ration once they are graduated. Therefore, to avoid additional candidates to a particular discipline universities can offer admissions same number of boys and girls. In fact, such practice would help to stop the disruption between both sexes and will make sure empowerment of both sexes uniquely. In conclusion, needless to say that for every stages of national and international achievement both sexes are vitally essential. So I believe that both male and female should receive equal level of education and, hence, all institutes should accept the same number of genders in every subject.

Going into University or Work Essay

by Henry Le (VietNam)

I'm going to have an IELTS test this September and here is my most typical way of writing a writing task 2 answer. Could you please suggest me the band that i am at so i could improve it as soon as possible please. Some people think young people should go to university to further their education while others think they should be encouraged to work as car mechanics or builders etc. to serve society. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. There is a wide range of choices for students to choose after high school these days. It is argued that people should continue their academic process by going to the university, whereas some opine they should be motivated to contribute to the world as soon as graduating. The upcoming paragraphs will discuss both opinions and draw a possible conclusion. To commence with, the most plausible reason to study further in university is obviously to improve technical experiences in the specialized area. For example, learning major such as law, medical or architecture requires a huge syllabus and years of theoretical and practical training before mastering their field. Although it is challenging and often causes discouragement to the students, the future career that requires advanced knowledge usually offers them high salaries and diverse perks. Therefore, further education is not only a better choice, but also is essential. By contrast, working without a university degree has two main advantages in terms of time and money. To exemplify, it is surveyed that nearly 60% of students in poorly-conditioned countries are unable to afford the university‘s tuition while others have to be responsible for their old-aged parents. Therefore, working as manual labor could not only decrease the financial burden on their family but also is less time-consuming as the students are not required to study 4-7 more years. To recapitulate, people have different views on whether students should further their academic study or start looking for a job after high school. Personally, it is partially agreed that young people should go to university if financially allowed because it seems that they are more likely to succeed in the future.

Hi,
I am not an expert so I’ll avoid give any band or score. Essay seems really god and different variables are available such as complex sentences and good vocabulary. Therefore I think it’s a good work and all the best for your exam.

IELTS Essay: Choosing a Major

by Venkatesh (Hyderabad. Telangana )

Students should choose a university major that prepares them for high-paying careers. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Nowadays, it is crucial that every student has to take wise decisions in their career. Most societies consider that they need to select a university where they can pursue the desired course. It will result in excellent salaries in their life. I strongly agree with the point and will outline why potential learners benefitted from this. There are several key benefits which stem from a college major. Firstly, it will enhance knowledge. Indeed people who select the subject which has been explained in depth about courses will include field trips, internships, and live projects. These are perfect examples of how students ace their brains. With this, they can know what is subject-based and what everything will include. Although by this method, they can learn ubiquity and understand and grow their skills. Secondly, students can participate in co-circular activities. Numerous universities conduct Debate competitions, Quizzes, and Sports Tournaments. Now students have a chance to boost their Resumes in particular fields. Indeed, enrolling on this will play a vital role in their life, resulting in impressive placements. Despite this, there are significant outcomes for good pay. The first one is that they can develop the technology. After successful completion, students pursuing information technology will join in a dream job in this field, and now they are imperative for an organisation to develop the technology. With this company, sales will surge with innovative developments which impact salaries which they good amount of money. Another essential part is finically independence. Individuals who take wise decisions to pursue the career they have Secure jobs at the age of 25 will aid various aspects of their family. Such as money in countries like India, for instance, they are critical for expenses in the family. In conclusion, making good moves will help for various reasons. Students need to understand before choosing which will help them to take the Zenith position.

IELTS Essay: Importance of University Education

by Gurkiran kaur (Gurdaspur, Punjab)

Some people think that the best way to succeed in life is to get a university education, while others disagree and say that it is no longer true nowadays. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. While a certain section of society believes that acquiring a university degree is paramount to become successful in life, yet there is some disagreement regarding its importance in this modern era. This essay will discuss both the viewpoints before deducing to the conclusion in my further paragraphs. To commence with, attaining education from the university or college enables the students to grasp in-depth knowledge about specific subjects. To elaborate it, these students will have the opportunity to understand the background information by engaging in detailed studies and concepts of certain fields, resulting in an increased familiarity and practicability of the ideas. For example, a graduate in business would potentially have stronger hold over the different business terminology and fundamental principles which would assist him/her with enough knowledge to handle any of its applicability in the real world. Ultimately, the graduates tend to qualify for much bigger designations in any organization owing to their information domain. Hence, a university degree, by being added on the resume considerably account for the success of a person. Another key point is that, not only pursuing the education from colleges aids in academic growth, but is also advantageous from the social perspective. As the university going scholars will have more links established and built long-lasting friendships by the time they leave their institutions. In addition, these social circles could undeniably count worthy for their satisfaction at deeper personal and emotional level. Thus, the link between the higher education and success seems significantly fair. On the other hand, tertiary education is becoming less popular due to the widespread availability of information on the internet, accessible to everyone at their comforts. To explicate, people can now easily learn new skills by signing up to plethora of courses available online. For instance, many youngsters are learning the photo editing courses by paying minimal charges, unlike the universities, and getting paid for their skills. As a result, the considerable shift towards e-education has revolutionized the way people access information and build their careers. This makes them successful irrespective of their academic qualifications. Along with it, web services have various perks for the entrepreneurs as well. To put it another way, individuals with or without degrees can use various tools and platforms such as instagram, facebook or online selling portals for the marketing of products. To exemplify, a famous cloth selling brand named Biba, is being run by its founder on instagram without having in prior knowledge in the business. Thereby, the obligation of having higher studies is no longer a prerequisite condition to excel in life. In conclusion, although it appears that the popularity of e-learning has paved new ways of becoming successful, I believe that the idea of having a university study is of far greater significance for succeeding both professionally and personally.

by Paywand Hassan (Iraq)

In some countries, young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of taking a gap year before entering university. Give your own opinion and support it with examples. Education systems are different from country to country, but the most developed countries are doing researches by collecting data and information to provide their students the most relevant knowledge and opportunity to enhance and encourage them to have this kind of abilities to manage their life properly. Moreover, adults are considered as a fuel for running the countries economy and accelerate the development process. So, enriching and enhancing adults, especially in the stage between high school and university, is the more crucial task of the government’s responsibility to build most successful individual for their countries. In this essay I am going discuss the advantages and disadvantages of taking a gap year before entering university and in conclusion I will show some points in regard to my opinion. Furthermore, the advantages of giving this gap between high school and university for working or traveling abroad are more than the disadvantages. According to conducted research and studies, students will be more successful in their university’s life academically and socially, because they will learn and gain more information about the life outside education field, and they will notice the importance of having experience for their future. On the other hand, they will be more familiar with the job market and financial situation. While, the disadvantages of this gap can be concluded in three points. Firstly, some students will not going to university after having a good payable job opportunity. Secondly, some students will lose the courage to start university life after taking this gap. Thirdly, traveling aboard and be familiar with different cultures enhance some students to change their first goal, for example maybe some of them planned to study medicine and after having this gap maybe they will find studying in the IT departments are more acceptable in the job market and you can reach it faster. In conclusion, in my opinion the advantage of the gap is more than the disadvantage, in the end with this gap the students are going to learn from their experiences and real life. Meanwhile, the social activities like having a part time job and taking responsibilities are more likelihood than going directly to the university. Finally, the student will not be fresh graduated if they have this one year of work experience and they have some information about working life after university.

In this day and age, taking a gap year has become increasingly popular among high school leavers. From my perspective, the drawbacks of this trend are clearly eclipsed by its merits.

Undoubtedly, there are some obvious advantages of taking a gap year after finishing high school. Firstly, this short break offers students a golden opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses , which will make them be well-prepared for the unknown future. In some countries, like Vietnam, the majority of high school students fail to wisely decide what degree they wish to pursue. This issue could be alleviated if high school graduates were granted a gap year to travel and gain fresh experiences. This would enable them to identify their interests and make good educational decisions.

Secondly, taking a gap year will give students the precious chance to accumulate experience instead of just learning theory in books . In fact, s tudents might learn about the job and acquire valuable practical experience by collaborating with professionals in the field, which would aid in their development as adults. When evaluating applications for open positions, employers generally prioritize applicants with extensive life and professional experience.

In conclusion, taking a gap year in order to explore or engage in employment can cause disruptions to a student's future academic progress and emotional well-being. However, a gap year can also provide an opportunity for individuals to be well-prepared for the future and expand their practical knowledge.

Bài mẫu Gap Year IELTS Writing Task 2

It has become common to see some high school graduates take a gap year for travel and work purposes before they apply to university. While there are some upsides to taking a year off upon high school graduation, it is not without its downsides.

To start, there are some clear advantages of taking a gap year for traveling and working as a high school graduate. Regarding traveling, this experience helps them become more mature by broadening their outlook on life and enjoying more independence. A break from academic life and its pressures is one other favorable aspect of an academic leave. Having studied for eleven consecutive years, most students tend to grow bored and tired of rigorous academic routines . Hence, students taking a gap year have the chance to enjoy some free time and return with a fresh mind. As for the work aspect of this decision, they can earn some money, which enables them to afford a better education for themselves. Experience they gain from working also helps make better academic and career decisions in the long-term.

Despite that, one should not be dismissive of some possible drawbacks of taking a gap year after school graduation. The most evident downside is perhaps the fact that their academic life will suffer as a result of academic absence. Students who put their studies on hold tend to have difficulties catching up with their peers later on. This is even more so in the case of university education seeing as courses taught at universities tend to be more comprehensive and complex, which can present a challenge to the student. Adding to this point is the fact that most students who take a gap year lose interest in pursuing tertiary education. This is because once they gain some independence after earning money, they develop a false sense of financial security, which kills their interest in learning.

In conclusion, while the main advantages of a gap year for travel and work are personal development and a fresh mind as well as better academic prospects, drawbacks range from academic challenges to a lack of interest in education.

  • Broaden their outlook on life/their minds : mở rộng đầu óc/cái nhìn về cuộc sống

  • Lose interest in : đánh mất hứng thú với cái gì
  • Develop a false sense of: hình thành lầm tưởng về

In many countries some students take a year off after finishing their high school studies for traveling or working before they enroll in a university . In my perspective, this one year gap between high school and university provides them with more disadvantages than advantages.

On the one hand, there are some merits for students who take a year off to travel or work between high school and university. Firstly, travel broadens the mind of your people. This might help them to gain valuable experience in their life. For example, students who travel to different places get a chance to mingle with different types of people and cultures and this may improve their knowledge and experience. Another positive outcome is that while traveling or working, young people could acquire maturity and this would help them perform well when they join the university. A final benefit is that young people will probably earn some money when they work before joining the university. This money can be used to pay their university fees .

On the other hand, there are more drawbacks when students spend a year working or traveling before joining the university. The first one is that if young people decide to work, they might get used to receiving an income and because of this they will not want to come back to their student life anymore. The second one is that traveling is an expensive activity and students who travel a year require a huge amount of money. This could be spent on university studies. What is more, most of the students are too young to travel by themselves and this might put them in more dangerous situations. For example, young students are not mature enough and they may get involved in illegal activities such as selling drugs and crime.

In conclusion, although there are some advantages to traveling or working between high school and university, in my opinion, the disadvantages of this practice outweigh the advantages.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Taking a Gap Year | Band 8 Essay Sample

Advantages and Disadvantages of Taking a Gap Year | Band 8 Essay Sample

Essay topic

In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies.

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young people who decide to do this .

Band 8 essay sample

In many countries, youngsters are often encouraged to take an year off, to work or travel across the world, before embarking on their formal university education. This recent trend, also known as “gap – year”, has numerous merits and a few demerits, which will be discussed in this essay.

To begin with, the biggest advantage of taking sabbatical to explore the world is that it gives them an opportunity to discover their career interest. Such trips are not only fun , but also  gives  them  a chance  to  socialise , engage in volunteering, and understand global issues  and global culture . This helps them to discover their real passion which is the foundation stone for a fulfilling career. For instance, data from Harvard University, 2010, pointed out that drop-out rate from university courses is around 10 percent less in those children who chose the course after taking a “gap year” in comparison to those who headed straight to university after the high school.

In addition to this, working for a year before starting university reduces the financial burden of higher education to an extent. As the advanced studies are costly in most countries, working for a year helps them in saving money so they have to borrow less money and are under less financial debt, when they start higher studies.

In contrast to above viewpoints, the most significant disadvantage of such a break is that it can be a distraction from further studies. Some students find such breaks so relaxing and enjoyable that they decide to shun further studies permanently.

Although the incidences of such cases are few, the effects can be disastrous for their further career. For instance, a 2010 report from Florida University revealed that 1 in 100 students, who take “Gap-year” never go for advanced studies and struggle throughout their life to make the ends meet because of being unskilled.

To conclude, the break of a year taken before pursuing university studies helps students to discover their career interest and also allows them to consolidate financially. However, for a minority of high school graduates it can lead to an end of  an academic career .
