Thangalaan review: Vikram delivers a spellbinding performance in this Pa Ranjith film

Thangalaan review: pa ranjith's film is intertwined with some fantasy and mystical realism. a must watch for vikram fans..

Thangalaan review: When we head into a Pa Ranjith film, we know that we can expect something that is different. Thangalaan starring Vikram, Pravathy Thiruvothu, Pasupathy and Malavika Mohanan is a historical drama that is set during the British rule and revolves around the Kolar Gold Fields in the late 1800s. British ‘dorai’ Clement has a hunger for gold and having heard of the ancient gold mines of Tipu Sultan (Kolar, Karnataka), he wants a group of labourers for the mining. He is told it is the tribals (pariahs) at Veppur village (North Arcot) who have been traditionally involved in mining and he has to convince the people there to take up this job. He even says he will share the spoils with the villagers to take them out of poverty.

Thangalaan (Vikram), his wife (Parvathy) and the others in Veppur wotk hard on their land but don’t reap the rewards - it’s the local mirazdar who does. Oppressed and treated like slaves, it is the need for self-respect and a better life that pushes Thangalaan to take up Clement’s offer. But the tribals also fear the existence of a strong, supernatural mystical power called Aarthi (Malavika Mohanan) who lives in the forests and hills to protect the gold. Thangalaan has experienced the fierce power of Aarthi on an earlier sojourn to mine gold but he believes that this time will be different. With Thangalaan leading the way, the group heads to Kolar with Clement to see if can find gold. Now, does Thangalaan find gold? Does the story of Aarthi turn out to be a myth? Does Britisher Clement help the tribals get a better life?

The verdict

Pa Ranjith has once again given us a film in a completely new genre - Thangalaan is a period film that is intertwined with some fantasy and mystical realism. The characters and the setting are raw and rustic and it adds to the allure of this drama which is based on the Kolar gold fields and the labourers who worked there. Thangalaan is definitely a visual extravaganza - right from the costumes to the make-up and the stark settings of the dry, arid land and the poverty-stricken look of the people creates a strong impact. You feel the suffering and desperation of the tribals just by looking at them and Ranjith and his team must be praised for this. The first half of the film takes its own time to set up the stage and this slow pacing is an issue. The second half meanders and is not as gripping as one expects which is a let-down. The hallucinations the characters face also get a bit jarring. Given that the characters speak a different kind of Tamil, it’s not easy to follow the dialogues which is a drawback. Thangalaan has a great new concept and fine performances but could have been more engaging.

Vikram has outdone himself in this film as Thangalaan and shows us how talented and committed he is, yet again. Whether it the emotional scenes or the action ones, Vikram makes you feel every emotion he goes through. Parvathy and Pasupathy are excellent as well and all three have mouthed the period Tamil dialogues with extreme elan. Malavika Mohanan is good in her role too.

Music director GV Prakash’s tunes and BGM for the film are really apt and he proves how he can adapt his style effortlessly across genres. The cinematography by A Kishor Kumar is a plus for the film but the editing could have been tighter.

Director Pa Ranjith has always been the voice for marginalised communities and themes of social reform, social justice, caste oppression and discrimination, often find their way into his films. His central character is usually an underprivileged person and Thangalaan is no different. Thangalaan, may not be perfect, but it’s a film that’s unforgettable thanks to its excellent performances, especially Vikram’s.

డ్రగ్స్ మాఫియాపై ఉక్కుపాదం మోపే ఏజెంట్ విక్రమ్ ( కమల్ హాసన్) సస్పెన్షన్‌కు గురై అండర్ గ్రౌండ్‌లోకి వెళ్లిపోతాడు. భారీగా డ్రగ్స్‌తో కూడిన కంటైనర్ మిస్ కావడంతో దాని కోసం డ్రగ్ మాఫియా డాన్ సంతానం (విజయ్ సేతుపతి) వెతుకుతుంటాడు. డ్రగ్ లావాదేవీలను అరికట్టేందుకు అమర్ (ఫాహద్ ఫాజిల్) బ్లాక్ ఆపరేషన్ నిర్వహిస్తుంటాడు. అండర్ గ్రౌండ్‌కు వెళ్లిన విక్రమ్.. కర్ణన్ అనే పేరుతో తన కొడుకుకు కారణమైన వారిని చంపుతుంటాడు.

విక్రమ్ కథలో మలుపులు

ఏజెంట్ విక్రమ్ కొడుకు ఎలా హత్య చేయబడ్డాడు. విక్రమ్ కొడుకును ఎవరు చంపారు? మిస్ అయిన డ్రగ్స్ కంటైనర్ కోసం వెతుకులాటలో సంతానం ఎలాంటి క్రూరత్వం చూపాడు? మనవడి కోసం విక్రమ్ ఎలాంటి నిర్ణయం తీసుకొన్నాడు? విక్రమ్, సంతానం మధ్య జరిగే పోరాటంలో అమర్ ఎలాంటి పాత్ర పోషించాడు అనే ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానమే విక్రమ్ సినిమా కథ.

విక్రమ్ ఫస్టాఫ్ ఇలా..

విక్రమ్ ఫస్టాఫ్‌ గురించి చెప్పాల్సి వస్తే.. కమల్ హాసన్ ఎంట్రీ సీన్ సినిమాపై ఆసక్తిని పెంచేలా ఉండటమే కాకుండా కథలోకి తీసుకెళ్లేందుకు తోడ్పాటునందించింది. ఇక విజయ్ సేతుపతి పాత్ర పరిచయం పవర్‌ఫుల్‌గా, భయానకంగా ఉంది. ఆ తర్వాత ఫాహద్ ఫాజిల్ పాత్ర ఎంట్రీ మరో హైలెట్. ఇంటర్వెల్‌లో కమల్ హాసన్‌కు సంబంధించిన ఓ సీన్ కథను మరో మలుపు తిప్పేలా చేస్తుంది. అయితే ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో కథ ఎక్కడా కనిపించకుండా కథనమే డామినేట్ చేయడం కొంత నిరాశను కలిగించే విషయంగా కనిపిస్తుంది.

సెకండాఫ్ పవర్ ఫ్యాక్ట్‌గా

ఫీల్ గుడ్ ఇంటర్వెల్ బ్యాంగ్ తర్వాత అసలు కథ చెప్పడంతో విక్రమ్ సినిమాపై మరింత ఆసక్తి పెరుగుతుంది. నా కొడుకును చంపిన వాళ్లను చంపడం నా లక్ష్యం కాదు.. డ్రగ్స్ లేని సమాజంలో నా మనవడిని చూడాలని అనుకొంటున్నాను అనే కమల్ చెప్పిన డైలాగ్‌తో అప్పటి వరకు సాగిన సినిమా స్వరూపం ఒక్కసారిగా మారిపోతుంది. ఇక యాక్షన్, థ్రిల్లింగ్, సెంటిమెంట్ ఎలిమెంట్స్‌తో కథ బలంగా కనిపిస్తుంది. చివర్ల సూర్య ఎంట్రీ సినిమాకు మరో హైలెట్. కథకు ప్రాధాన్యం ఇవ్వకుండా.. సీన్లను పేర్చుకొంటూ వెళ్లి చేసిన సరికొత్త ప్రయోగం విక్రమ్.

దర్శకుడు లోకేష్ గురించి

దర్శకుడు లోకేష్ కనకరాజ్ విషయానికి వస్తే.. డ్రగ్స్ నేపథ్యంగా నడిచే రెగ్యులర్ పాయింటే. కానీ స్టార్ వాల్యూ, మేకింగ్ స్టాండర్డ్స్ సినిమాను కొత్తగా మార్చాయి. హాలీవుడ్ సినిమాలు, వెబ్ సిరీస్‌ల ప్రభావంతో లోకేష్ కనకరాజ్ రాసుకొన్న కథ, కథనాలు ఆసక్తికరంగా మారాయని చెప్పవచ్చు. విజయ్ సేతుపతి, కమల్ హాసన్, ఫాహద్ పాజిల్, సూర్య పాత్రలను కథలోకి జొప్పించిన విధానం, బలంగా ఆ పాత్రలను మలిచిన తీరు సినిమాకు స్పెషల్ ఎట్రాక్షన్‌గా మారడమే కాకుండా లోకేష్ కనకరాజ్ ప్రతిభను మరోసారి బయటపెట్టాయి.

నటీనటుల ఫెర్ఫార్మెన్స్

కమల్ హాసన్, విజయ్ సేతుపతి, ఫాహద్ ఫాజిల్ యాక్టింగ్, పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ గురించి కొత్తగా చెప్పనక్కర్లేదు. నాలుగేళ్ల తర్వాత మళ్లీ స్క్రీన్ మీదకు కమల్ రావడంతో విక్రమ్ ఎలా ఉండబోతుందనే విషయం ఆసక్తిని పెంపొందించి. కచ్చితంగా కమల్, విజయ్ సేతుపతి, ఫాహద్ నట విశ్వరూపాన్ని మరోసారి రుచి చూపించారు. సూర్య అతిథి పాత్ర బ్రహ్మండంగా పేలింది. ఇతర నటీనటులు కూడా మెప్పించే విధంగా నటించారు.

టెక్నికల్ విభాగాల పనితీరు

సాంకేతిక విభాగాల పనితీరు విషయానికి వస్తే.. ఈ సినిమాకు అనిరుధ్ మ్యూజిక్ ప్లస్ పాయింట్. బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్‌తో అదరగొట్టాడు. పాటలు పెద్దగా ఆకట్టుకొలేకపోయాయి. సినిమాటోగ్రఫి, ఎడిటింగ్ విభాగాల పనితీరు బాగున్నాయి. ఫైట్స్ సీక్వెన్స్ కొత్తగా ఉంటాయి.

ఫైనల్‌గా ఎలా ఉందంటే

విక్రమ్ సినిమా గురించి చెప్పాలంటే.. రొటీన్ కథకు హాలీవుడ్ స్టైల్‌ స్క్రీన్ ప్లేను జోడించి చేసిన మ్యాజిక్ అని అనిపిస్తుంది. ఈ సినిమాకు స్టార్ వాల్యూ కొండంత బలంగా మారింది. సినిమా నిడివి కొంత ఇబ్బందికరంగా ఉంటుంది. సాంకేతిక విభాగాల పనితీరు, నటీనటుల ప్రతిభ ఈ సినిమాను మరో రేంజ్‌కు చేర్చాయని చెప్పవచ్చు. తప్పకుండా విక్రమ్ సినిమా థియేట్రికల్ ఎక్స్‌పీరియెన్స్ ఉన్న సినిమా. ఓ హాలీవుడ్ సినిమా స్థాయి యాక్షన్, ప్రొడక్షన్ వాల్యూస్ కనిపిస్తాయి. కాబట్టి ఓటీటీలో చూడటం కంటే.. థియేటర్‌లో చూస్తేనే మంచి ఎక్స్‌పీరియెన్స్ కలుగుతుంది.

Vikram Movie Review: దాదాపు నాలుగేళ్ల విరామం అనంత‌రం క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్ హీరోగా న‌టించిన చిత్రం విక్ర‌మ్‌. యాక్ష‌న్ ఎంట‌ర్‌టైన‌ర్‌గా తెర‌కెక్కిన ఈ సినిమాలో విజ‌య్ సేతుప‌తి,ఫ‌హాద్ ఫాజిల్ ముఖ్య పాత్ర‌ల్లో న‌టించారు. లోకేష్ క‌న‌క‌రాజ్ ద‌ర్శ‌క‌త్వం వ‌హించిన ఈ చిత్రం నేడు ప్రేక్ష‌కుల ముందుకొచ్చింది. ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందంటే....

వైవిధ్య‌మైన క‌థాంశాల‌కు, ప్ర‌యోగాత్మ‌క పాత్ర‌ల‌కు ద‌క్షిణాది చిత్ర‌సీమ‌లో చిరునామాగా నిలుస్తుంటారు క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్‌. ఆయ‌న సినిమా అంటేనే తెలుగు, త‌మిళం అనే భేదాలు లేకుండా అన్ని భాష‌ల ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్లో ఆస‌క్తి నెల‌కొంటుంది. జ‌యాప‌జ‌యాల‌కు అతీతంగా తాను న‌మ్మిన సిద్ధాంతాల‌తోనే సినిమాలు చేస్తూ కెరీర్‌లో ముందుకు సాగుతున్నారు క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్‌.  

 విశ్వ‌రూపం 2 త‌ర్వాత దాదాపు నాలుగేళ్ల విరామం అనంత‌రం విక్ర‌మ్ సినిమాతో ప్రేక్ష‌కుల ముందుకొచ్చారాయ‌న‌.  ప్రయోగాత్మకంగా తెరకెక్కిన ఖైదీ చిత్రంతో ప్ర‌తిభ‌ను చాటుకున్న లోకేష్ క‌న‌క‌రాజ్ ఈ చిత్రానికి ద‌ర్శ‌క‌త్వం వ‌హించారు. విజ‌య్ సేతుప‌తి, ఫ‌హాద్ ఫాజిల్ కీల‌క పాత్ర‌ల‌ను పోషించారు. అగ్ర హీరో సూర్య అతిథి పాత్ర‌లో క‌నిపించ‌డంతో ద‌క్షిణాదిన ఈ సినిమాపై భారీగా అంచ‌నాలు ఏర్ప‌డ్డాయి. హీరో నితిన్ నిర్మాణ సంస్థ శ్రేష్ట్ మూవీస్ ద్వారా ఈ సినిమా తెలుగు ప్రేక్ష‌కుల‌ముందుకొచ్చింది.

ప్రభంజన్ అనే పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్‌తో అత‌డి  తండ్రి క‌ర్ణ‌ణ్ (కమల్ హాసన్)ను,  మ‌రో నార్కోటిక్ అధికారిని ముసుగు మ‌నుషులు హ‌త్య చేస్తారు. ఆ హ‌త్య‌లకు సంబంధించి ఎలాంటి  క్లూస్ పోలీసుల‌కు ల‌భించ‌వు. పోలీస్ క‌మీష‌న‌ర్ ఆ కేసును బ్లాక్ స్క్వాడ్ ఆఫీస‌ర్ అమ‌ర్ (ఫహాద్ ఫాజిల్) కు అప్ప‌గిస్తాడు.  ఆ ముసుగు మ‌నుషులు సిటీలో ఉన్న డ్ర‌గ్ డీల‌ర్స్ ఒక్కొక్క‌రిని చంపేస్తుంటారు.  అమర్ తో పాటు వారిని  ప‌ట్టుకోవ‌డానికి డ్ర‌గ్ డీల‌ర్ సంతానం (విజయ్ సేతుపతి) కూడా ప్ర‌య‌త్నిస్తుంటాడు. అమ‌ర్ ప‌రిశోధ‌న‌లో ఆ ముసుగు మ‌నిషి 1987 బ్లాక్ స్వ్కాడ్ లీడ‌ర్ విక్ర‌మ్ (కమల్ హాసన్) అనే నిజం తెలుస్తుంది . తానేవ‌రో ప్ర‌పంచానికి తెలియ‌కుండా ముసుగు ధ‌రించి అత‌డు ఎందుకు హ‌త్య‌లు చేస్తుంటాడు. క‌ర్ణ‌న్ అనే మారుపేరుతో అత‌డు బ‌త‌క‌డానికి కార‌ణ‌మేమిటి? ప్ర‌భంజ‌న్‌తో అత‌డికి ఉన్న సంబంధ‌మేమిటి? విక్ర‌మ్ తో పాటు అత‌డి మ‌న‌వ‌డిని సంతానం ఎందుకు చంపాల‌ని అనుకుంటాడు?  తాను ప్రాణంగా ప్రేమించిన గాయ‌త్రిని అమ‌ర్ ఎలా దూరం చేసుకున్నాడు? ప‌గ ప్ర‌తీకారాల‌తో కూడిన ఈ పోరాటంలో గెలుపు ఎవ‌రిద‌న్న‌దే ఈ చిత్ర ఇతివృత్తం. 

ఖైదీకి కొనసాగింపుగా...

త‌న గ‌త చిత్రం ఖైదీతో ముడిపెడుతూ లోకేష్ క‌న‌క‌రాజ్ విక్ర‌మ్ క‌థ‌ను రాసుకున్నారు. ఓ పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్ ర‌హ‌స్యంగా దాచిపెట్టిన కోట్లాది రూపాయ‌ల విలువైన డ్ర‌గ్స్‌ను చేజిక్కించుకోవ‌డానికి సంతానం వేసే ఎత్తులు, అత‌డిని అడ్డుకోవ‌డానికి ప్ర‌య‌త్నించే విక్రమ్.. మ‌ధ్య‌లో ఓ అండ‌ర్ క‌వ‌ర్ పోలీస్‌ అమర్.. ఈ ముగ్గురు  చుట్టూ విక్ర‌మ్  సినిమా సాగుతుంది. డ్ర‌గ్ మాఫియా క‌థాంశానికి ఫ్యామిలీ ఎమోష‌న్స్ మేళ‌విస్తూ యాక్ష‌న్ ప్ర‌ధానంగా లోకేష్  క‌న‌క‌రాజ్ ఈ సినిమాను తెర‌కెక్కించారు.

క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్ చ‌నిపోయే సీన్‌తో సినిమా ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. అత‌డి హ‌త్య వెనుకున్న కార‌ణాల్ని ఫ‌హాద్ ఫాజిల్ అన్వేషించే సీన్స్ తో ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా ముందుకు సాగుతుంది. ఒక్కో ట్విస్ట్ రివీల్ చేసుకుంటూ క‌థ‌లో ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని లీనం అయ్యేలా చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. విరామ స‌న్నివేశాల్లో వ‌చ్చే ట్విస్ట్ తో ద్వితీయార్థం కోసం ప్రేక్షకుల్ని ఆసక్తికరంగా ఎదురుచూసేలా చేశారు దర్శకుడు. సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్ ఎవ‌రో, అత‌డి పోరాటం ఎందుకోస‌మో చూపిస్తూనే సంతానంపై అత‌డు ప్ర‌తీకారం తీర్చుకోవ‌డాన్ని యాక్షన్ ప్ర‌ధానంగా ఆవిష్క‌రించారు. 

మూడు పాత్రలు హైలైట్

క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్‌తో పాటు విజ‌య్ సేతుప‌తి, ఫ‌హాద్ ఫాజిల్ క్యారెక్ట‌రైజేష‌న్స్ ఈ సినిమాకు ప్ర‌ధాన బ‌లంగా నిలిచాయి. ఈ మూడు  పాత్ర‌లు పోటాపోటీగా సాగుతాయి.  వారి నటనకు ఎక్కడ వంక పెట్టలేము. అంతగా పాత్రల్లో ఒదిగిపోయారు. క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్ పాత్ర డిఫ‌రెంట్ షేడ్స్ తో సాగుతుంది. కమల్ పాత్ర  ను పూర్తిగా ఎక్క‌డ రివీల్ చేయ‌కుండా ఎండ్ వ‌ర‌కు ఒక్కో షేడ్ చూపిస్తూ నడిపించడం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది.  

అండ‌ర్ క‌వ‌ర్ పోలీస్‌గా ఫ‌హాద్ ఫాజిల్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ న‌వ్విస్తూనే  ఉత్కంఠ‌ను పంచుతుంది. సీరియ‌స్ సీన్‌లో అత‌డు వేసే పంచ్‌లు అలరిస్తాయి. సెటిల్డ్ గా అత‌డి క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌ను ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు రాసుకున్నారు. విల‌న్ పాత్ర‌లో మ‌రోసారి విజ‌య్ సేతుప‌తి త‌న విశ్వ‌రూపాన్ని చూపించారు. ఎంట్రీ సీన్ తోనే అత‌డి క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ సినిమాలో ఎంత ప‌వ‌ర్ ఫుల్ గా ఉంటుందో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు చూపించారు. డ్ర‌గ్ డీల‌ర్‌, అడిక్ట‌ర్‌గా ప్ర‌తి సీన్ లో త‌న న‌ట‌న‌తో విజ‌య్ సేతుప‌తి ప్రేక్షకుల్ని సర్ ప్రైజ్ చేస్తుంటారు. క‌మ‌ల్ హాస‌న్‌కు ధీటుగా అత‌డి క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ సాగుతుంది. ముగ్గురి న‌ట‌న గురించి ఎంత చెప్పినా త‌క్కువే అవుతుంది.

చివ‌ర‌లో హీరో సూర్య‌ను అతిథిగా చూపించి విక్ర‌మ్ సినిమాకు కొన‌సాగింపుగా మ‌రో భాగం ఉంటుంద‌ని లోకేష్ క‌న‌క‌రాజ్  ప్రకటించారు. అందులో  కార్తి, క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్‌, ఫ‌హాద్ ఫాజిల్ పాత్ర‌లు ఉండ‌బోతున్న‌ట్లుగా చూపించారు. 

రొటీన్ రివేంజ్ డ్రామా

ఖైదీ తో విక్రమ్ కథను క‌నెక్ట్ చేసి చెప్ప‌డానికి ప్ర‌య‌త్నించ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు లోకేష్ క‌న‌క‌రాజ్ కొంత క‌న్ఫ్యూజ‌న్ కు లోనైన‌ట్లుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఆ పాయింట్  కార‌ణంగా కొత్త పాత్ర‌లు ఎంట‌ర్ అవుతూ తిక‌మ‌క పెడుతుంటాయి. ముసుగు ధ‌రించి చేసే హ‌త్య‌ల తాలూకు ఎపిసోడ్ లెంగ్త్ ఎక్కువ‌గా అనిపిస్తుంది.  ప్ర‌థ‌మార్థంలో స‌స్పెన్స్ ను హోల్డ్ చేస్తూ వ‌చ్చిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ఫ్యామిలీ ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ రీజ‌న్ తో ముడిపెట్టి ట్విస్ట్ ను రివీల్ చేయడం క‌న్వీన్సింగ్ అనిపించ‌దు. ద్వితీయార్థం పూర్తిగా రొటీన్ రివేంజ్ డ్రామాగా సినిమా మారిపోతుంది. క్లైమాక్స్ పూర్తిగా ఖైదీ సినిమాను పోలి సాగుతుంది. 

అనిరుధ్ మరో హీరో..

మ్యూజిక్ డైరెక్ట‌ర్ అనిరుధ్ ర‌విచంద్ర‌న్ ఈ సినిమాకు మరో హీరోగా నిలిచాడు. సినిమాలోని ప్రతి సీన్ కు అతడి బ్యాక్‌గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ తోడ‌వ‌డంతో ప్రేక్ష‌కుడికి హై మూవ్‌మెంట్ ను ఇస్తుంది. ఈ సినిమాకు క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్ నిర్మాత‌. త‌న సొంత సినిమా కావ‌డంతో బ‌డ్జెట్ విష‌యంలో ఎక్క‌డ కాంప్ర‌మైజ్ కాలేదు. తెలుగు డ‌బ్బింగ్‌లో చాలా జాగ్ర‌త్త‌లు తీసుకున్నది శ్రేష్ట్ మూవీస్ సంస్థ. తెలుగులో త‌న పాత్ర‌కు క‌మ‌ల్‌హాస‌న్ స్వ‌యంగా డ‌బ్బింగ్ చెబుతున్నారు.

What’s it about?

The story takes place in 1850, during the British era. Thangalaan (Vikram) and their villagers suffer at the hands of their village landlord. The landlord seizes Thangalaan’s land documents due to their failure to pay taxes.

To escape from this tyranny, Thangalaan (Vikram) and a few more men from their village agree to guide British general Clement (Daniel Caltagirone) to find gold.

Thangalaan knows very well that Aarathi, the sorceress (Malavika Mohanan), never allows them to dig for gold and draws blood to secure the land’s possessions. Additionally, Aarathi’s visions haunt Thangalaan. Despite all this, he leads the way to dig gold for a better future for his entire village. Will he succeed?

Director Pa Ranjith, renowned for “Kabali” and “Kaala,” specializes in portraying narratives from the vantage point of marginalized communities. He consistently incorporates politics and Dalit perspectives into his stories. His latest “Thangalaan” (meaning “son of gold”) deviates from conventional movie narratives with its plot. The film talks about the migration of laborers to Kolar in order to excavate mines in that region, which subsequently became recognized as KGF (Kolar Gold Fields).

Undoubtedly, Pa Ranjith has crafted a story that remains mostly unexplored in Indian film. Furthermore, he employs the technique of magic realism to convey this tale. Although the implementation of this magic realism narrative approach is effective in certain places, it eventually becomes overly intricate and hinders the overall coherence of the storytelling, rendering the movie challenging to comprehend.

But for movie lovers, the film offers many brilliant episodes. The performances are superb. Vikram once again demonstrates what a great actor he is, providing an example of realistic portrayal. Additionally, the film features a few poignant sequences. One example is when Vikram gets the chance to wear a shirt and pants. It reminds us of a scene in “Django Unchained.” In fact, the basic plot has similarities to this Quentin Tarantino’s film. Then there is another episode where the women of the village celebrate when they first get the opportunity to wear blouses. This entire stretch is filmed in a touching manner.

The flashback episode involving Malavika Mohanan’s character and Vikram’s grandfather is another beautiful sequence. Voila Davis’s “The Woman King” appears to have inspired Malavika’s appearance.

A major part of the film captivates our interest and allows us to appreciate the actors’ performances, as well as Pa Ranjith’s storytelling. However, as previously mentioned, as the story progresses, it gradually loses its pace and also lacks coherence. The film’s screenplay is too esoteric, potentially not appealing to all.

The duration of the runtime is extremely lengthy.

In addition to Vikram’s exceptional performance in the film, Parvathy Thiruvothu’s acting is also remarkable. She performs exceptionally well in her role. Malavika Mohanan shines in her limited role. Preeti Karan, portraying the character of Anasuya, delivers a fine performance.

The technical elements of the film, including the soundtrack and background score by composer GV Prakash Kumar, are good.

Bottomline: “Thangalaan” incorporates elements of magical realism to depict the tale of Kolar Gold Fields, the miners, and their tales of oppression. The film showcases a remarkable performance from Vikram and has several deeply moving sections, yet it suffers from excessive length and lack of clarity. The film is too hard to follow at many places. The film works only to limited section of audiences.

Thangalaan is Vikram’s latest film, which has caught everyone’s imagination. Thanks to the promotions, the film was released today in Telugu with decent hype. Directed by Pa Ranjith, Thangalaan has Malavika Mohanan as the female lead. Read to find out whether the film lives up to all the hype or not.

Thangalaan is set in the year 1850 CE in Veppur village, North Arcot. Thangalaan is the chief of a tribal group who is hired by the British to search for traces of gold in his village. However, this job of Thangalaam angers the locals headed by Aarathi(Malavika Mohanan). This creates a solid war between Tangalaan’s tribe and the force headed by Aarathi. How all this unfolds in the backdrop of the British empire is the basic story of the film.

Plus Points :

The basic setup created by Pa Ranjith is just amazing. His story, the cast chosen, and the backdrop give an idea of how deep the director goes when he tries to tell a story that has so many layers deep within. In Thangalaan, he discusses many topics, such as suppression, Buddhism, and the ill-treatment of women by the men from the tribe. All this makes Thangalaan quite interesting,

Thangalaan becomes even more interesting when stars like Vikram play lead roles. He is just amazing in the title role and shocks us with his performance. Be it his look, body language, and the slang used, Vikram is the mainstay of the film and delivers a memorable performance.

Malavika Mohanan is the surprise package of the film and shocks you with her intense act. All these years, we have seen her in glamorous roles, but director Pa Ranjith brings out the best in her. Malavika is amazing in all the confrontation scenes with Vikram.

Parvathy Thiruvothu Vikram’s wife was also elegant in her role. One of the biggest assets of the film is the production design. The minute details and the bygone era are showcased in a breathtaking manner. The fight sequences have also been designed well and look realistic in the second half.

Minus Points :

As the film is done in sync with sound, the Telugu dubbing looks a bit weird. One needs to get adjusted to the pace of the dialogues to get a feel of the proceedings. One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is the VFX part. The graphics are tacky and leave you irritated for the most part.

Pa Ranjith is a director who directs films in a very realistic manner and is known for his technicalities. But he neglecting the VFX part leaves a lot to be desired. There is no denying the fact that Thangalaan has a feel of art cinema told in a commercial format. It will be really hard for hardcore Telugu cinema lovers to adjust to the vibe of the film.

Pa Ranjith’s films are mostly about oppression and the same happens in Thangalaan too. After a while, the scenes showcased in this aspect look predictable and boring. Also, the character of Malavika Mohanan and her tribe should have been established in a better manner.

Technical Aspects :

As mentioned earlier, the VFX is tacky and goes against the film. The editing in the second half is a tad dull, and more care should have been taken with the screenplay to make the viewing a lot better. The camerawork showcasing the bygone era is just amazing. The production design, costume design, and makeup done are of award-winning quality.

Coming to the director Pa Ranjith, he is known to push boundaries with each passing film of his and he does the same with Thangalaan as well. He chooses a very interesting story and extracts solid performances from his cast. But to enjoy his narrative, one needs patience and an eye for scenes that are serious and have no scope for entertainment.

On the whole, Thangalaan showcases Vikram in yet another crazy avatar. Malavika Mohanan is the surprise package of the film and impresses in a shocking new avatar. The pacing is slow and the subject matter is for those who have an eye for art and serious cinema told in a commercial format.

విక్రమ్‌ కథేంటంటే... మాస్క్‌ మ్యాన్‌ పేరుతో ఓ ముఠా వరుస హత్యలకు పాల్పడుతుంది. అందులో భారీ స్థాయిలో డ్రగ్స్‌ను పట్టుకున్న పోలీసు అధికారి ప్రభంజన్‌, అతని తండ్రి కర్ణణ్‌ (కమల్‌ హాసన్‌) కూడా ఉంటారు. ఈ ముఠాను పట్టుకునేందుకు రంగంలోకి దిగుతాడు స్పై ఏజెంట్‌ అమర్‌(ఫాహద్‌ ఫాజిల్‌). అతని టీమ్‌తో కలిసి ఈ కేసును ఛేదించే క్రమంలో ప్రభంజన్‌ హత్య వెనుక డ్రగ్స్‌ మాఫియా లీడర్‌ సంతానం(విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి)ఉన్నట్లు తెలుస్తుంది. అలాగే అందరూ అనుకున్నట్లుగా కర్ణణ్‌ చనిపోలేదనే విషయం కూడా తెలుస్తుంది. మరి కర్ణణ్‌ చనిపోయినట్లు ఎందుకు నటించాడు? అతని నేపథ్యం ఏంటి? అతనికి ఏజెంట్‌ విక్రమ్‌కి మధ్య ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి? డ్రగ్స్‌ మాఫియాను అరికట్టేందుకు కర్ణణ్‌ వేసిన ప్లాన్‌ ఏంటి? ఈ క్రమంలో అతను ఎదుర్కొన్న సమస్యలు ఏంటి? చివరకు అమర్‌ వారికి ఏవిధంగా సహాయం చేశాడు? ఈ కథలోకి సూర్య ఎలా ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చాడు? అనేది తెలియాలంటే విక్రమ్‌ సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే. 

ఎలా ఉందంటే..  స్టైలిష్‌ యాక్షన్‌కి పెట్టింది పేరు లోకేష్‌ కనకరాజన్‌. అలాంటి దర్శకుడికి కమల్‌ హాసన్‌, విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి, ఫాహద్‌ ఫాజిల్‌ లాంటి దిగ్గజ నటులు దొరికితే.. ఎలా ఉంటుంది? యాక్షన్‌ సీన్స్‌ని వేరే లెవల్‌లో చూపించొచ్చు. విక్రమ్‌లో కనకరాజన్‌ అదే చేశాడు. ఫుల్‌ యాక్షన్స్‌ సీన్స్‌తో దుమ్ము దులిపేశాడు. కథలో కావాల్సినన్ని ట్విస్టులు, ఎలివేషన్స్‌ ఉన్నాయి. డ్రగ్స్‌ మాఫియా చుట్టూ విక్రమ్‌ కథ తిరుగుతుంది. భారీ స్థాయిలో డ్రగ్స్‌ని పట్టుకోవడం, దాని ఆచూకీ కోసం సంతానం ప్రయత్నం చేయడం, ఈ క్రమంలో వరుస హత్యలు.. స్పై ఏజెంట్ అమర్‌ రంగంలోకి దిగడం.. కర్ణణ్‌ గురించి కొన్ని నిజాలు తెలియడంతో ఫస్టాఫ్‌ ముగుస్తుంది. ఇంటర్వెల్‌ ట్విస్ట్‌ అదిరిపోతుంది. ఇక ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో సాదా సీదాగా అనిపించిన సీన్లను సెకండాఫ్‌కు ముడిపెట్టి చూపించిన విధానం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది.

ఇక సెకండాఫ్‌లో అయితే యాక్షన్‌ డోస్‌ భారీగా పెంచేశాడు. 1987 నాటి  ‘విక్రమ్’ సినిమాకు, అలాగే లోకేష్‌ కనకరాజన్‌ గత చిత్రాలు ‘ఖైదీ’, ‘మాస్టర్‌’కి ఈ చిత్రాన్ని లింక్‌ చేసిన విధానం బాగుంది. ఇక క్లైమాక్స్‌లో అయితే కమల్‌ హాసన్‌ చేసే యాక్షన్‌ సీన్స్‌..  రోలెక్స్ పాత్రలో సూర్య ఎంట్రీ అదిరిపోతుంది. అంతేకాదు పార్ట్‌ 2 ఉంటుందని సూర్య పాత్రతో చెప్పించాడు దర్శకుడు. ఎప్పుడెప్పుడు కమల్, సూర్యలను తెరపై పూర్తి స్థాయిలో చూస్తామా అని వెయిట్ చేసేలా చేశాడు. 

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే.. విక్రమ్‌ పాత్రలో లోక నాయకుడు కమల్‌ హాసన్‌ ఒదిగిపోయాడు. 67 ఏళ్ల వయసులోనూ ఇలాంటి పాత్రలో నటించడం ఒక్క కమల్‌కే సాధ్యమయింది. యాక్షన్‌ సీన్స్‌లో కమల్‌ చూపించే యాటిట్యూడ్‌ అదిరిపోయింది. అలాగే ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో తాగుబోతుగా, డ్రగ్స్‌ బానిసగా తనదైన నటనతో ఆదరగొట్టేశాడు. క్లైమాక్స్‌లో కమల్‌ చేసే ఫైట్స్‌ సీన్‌ సినిమాకే హైలైట్‌. ఇక స్పై ఏజెంట్‌ అమర్‌గా ఫహద్‌ ఫాజిల్‌ మంచి నటనను కనబరిచాడు. యాక్షన్‌ సీన్స్‌లో దుమ్ము దులిపేశాడు. ఎమోషనల్‌ సీన్స్‌లో అద్భుతంగా నటించాడు.

ఇక విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి నటన గురించి ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పనక్కర్లేదు. ఏ పాత్రలోనైనా అవలీలగా నటిస్తాడు. డ్రగ్స్‌ మాఫీయా లీడర్‌ సంతానం పాత్రలో విజయ్‌ సేతుపతి పరకాయ ప్రవేశం చేశాడు. అతని గెటప్‌ కానీ, యాక్టింగ్‌ కానీ డిఫరెంట్‌గా ఉంటుంది. ఇక క్లైమాక్స్‌లో రోలెక్స్‌గా సూర్య ఎంట్రీ అదిరిపోతుంది. తెరపై ఉన్నది కొద్ది క్షణాలే అయినా.. తనదైన నటనతో అందరినీ మెప్పించాడు. అంతేకాదు పార్ట్‌2పై  ఆసక్తిని కూడా పెంచేశాడు. సాంకేతిక విషయానికొస్తే.. ఈ సినిమాకు మరో ప్రధాన బలం అనిరుధ్‌ సంగీతం. తనదైన నేపథ్య సంగీతంతో సినిమాను మరో స్థాయికి తీసుకెళ్లాడు. గిరీష్‌ గంగాధరణ్‌ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది. స్క్రీన్‌ప్లే చక్కగా కుదిరింది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు సినిమా స్థాయికి తగినట్లుగా ఉన్నాయి.

“మిరపకాయ్” హిట్ తర్వాత రవితేజ, హరీష్ శంకర్ కాంబినేషన్లో చిత్రం ఇదే. “రైడ్” అనే హిందీ రీమేకుగా వచ్చిన ఈ “మిస్టర్ బచ్చన్” ఎలా ఉందో చూద్దం.

కథలోకి వెళ్తే బచ్చన్ (రవితేజ) ఒక నిఖార్సైన ఆదాయపు పన్ను శాఖ అధికారి. అయితే వృత్తిలో భాగంగా బచ్చన్ సస్పెన్షన్ కి గురౌతాడు. తన ఊరొచ్చి కుమార్ శాను పాటలు పాడుకుంటూ ఆర్కెష్ట్రా నడుపుతుంటాడు. అక్కడే ఒక మార్వాడి-తెలుగు అమ్మాయి (జిక్కి) ప్రేమలో పడతాడు. రెండు కుటుంబాలు ఒప్పుకుని పెళ్ళికి సిద్ధమైన సమయంలో బచ్చన్ మీద సస్పెన్షన్ ఎత్తేసి డ్యూటీలో అర్జెంటుగా చేరమంటుంది డిపార్ట్మెంట్. కారణం ముత్యం జగ్గయ్య (జగపతి బాబు) అనే ఎంపీ ఇంటిపై రైడ్ చెయ్యాలి. ఇంతకీ ఆ రైడ్ పూర్తి చేసి, సరైన సమయంలో వెనక్కొచ్చి జిక్కి మెడలో తాళి ఎలా కడతాడనేది తక్కిన కథ.

2019లో “గద్దలకొండ గణేష్” తర్వాత హరీష్ శంకర్ మళ్లీ ఇదే రావడం. ఐదేళ్ల గ్యాప్ వచ్చినా అతని పట్ల యూత్ లో అంచనాలు తగ్గలేదు. తాను తీసిన సినిమాలో పూర్తి కమర్షియల్ విలువలతో కూడిన వినోదం ఉంటుందని యువప్రేక్షకుల నమ్మకం. అయితే ఈ సినిమా చూసాక అతని ఐదేళ్ల గ్యాప్ కెరీర్ కే కాదు, అతని రైటింగ్ లోని డెప్త్ కి కూడా వచ్చిందని అర్ధమవుతుంది. ఐదేళ్లల్లో సినిమాల తీరూ తెన్నూ చాలా మారిపోయింది. కానీ హరీష్ శంకర్ అక్కడే ఉండిపోయాడా అనే అనుమానాలొస్తాయి.

ఎందుకంటే హిందీ సినిమాని తీసుకుని రీమేక్ చేసే క్రమంలో, మంచి ఫేస్ వేల్యూ ఉన్న నటులని పెట్టుకుని కామెడీ అనబడే సీన్లు నాలుగు రాసేసుకుంటే తెర మీద వినోదం పండిచ్చేయవచ్చనే ఓవర్ కాంఫిడెన్సుతో తీసిన సినిమాలా ఉంది. అసలు కథేంటో చెప్పమంటే సింగిల్ లైన్లో చెప్పొచ్చు. పెద్దగా విషయం లేని కథని కథనంతో కట్టిపారేయడం చాలా కష్టం. అలా కట్టిపారేయనప్పుడు చూసిన వాళ్లు కొట్టిపారేస్తారు. అది సహజం.

ఈ చిత్రంలో పాత్రలన్నీ మ్యూజిక్ లవర్సే. ఒకరు కిషోర్ కుమార్ ఫ్యాన్, ఇంకొకరు కుమార్ శాను అభిమాని. ఇంకో పాత్రకి అమితాబ్ పాటల పిచ్చి, మరొకరికి ఘంటశాల పాటల అభిమానం..ఇలా ప్రతీ పాత్ర పాటలు వింటూనో, పాడుతోనో కనిపిస్తుంటారు. అదంతా వినోదంలో భాగంగా తీసుకోవచ్చు. కానీ ట్రైలర్లో అత్యంత ఫెరోషియస్ గా కనిపించిన జగపతిబాబు పాత్ర కూడా “తాయారమ్మా..” అంటూ ఏవో పాటలు పాడుతూ ఇంట్రడ్యూస్ అవుతాడు.

ప్రధమార్ధమంతా వినోదాత్మకంగా తీసి, ద్వితీయార్ధంలో సీరియస్ డ్రామా నింపి హీరోయిజాన్ని తారాస్థాయికి తీసుకెళ్తాడనుకుంటే ఆ భాగాన్నంతా జంక్ తో నింపేసాడు దర్శకుడు. కథ ముందుకు కదలదు. రెండో సగమంతా రైడ్ ఎపిసోడే.

హీరోయిజం శక్తి తెలిసేది విలన్ బలంగా ఉన్నప్పుడే. కానీ ఇక్కడ విలన్ పాత్ర పరమ వీక్. రంగస్థలంలో ఫణీంద్ర భూపతిగా, అరవింద సమేత లో బసిరెడ్డిగా వైవిధ్యమైన సీరియస్ విలనీని పండించిన జగపతిబాబు ఇందులో ముత్యం జగ్గయ్యగా తుస్సుమనిపించాడు. తప్పు ఆయనది కాదు. రాసుకున్న పాత్రది.

మరో విషయం ఏంటంటే, ఆదాయపుపన్ను శాఖ అధికారుల్ని ఇండియన్ ఆర్మీతో పోలుస్తూ నిజాయితీ పరుడైన హీరో చేత ఘనమైన డైలాగ్ చెప్పించాడు దర్శకుడు. కానీ అదే సమయంలో అతని వెంట వచ్చిన అదే శాఖకు చెందిన తక్కిన అధికారులు లంచాల ఎరకి పడిపోయేవారిగా చూపించాడు. అంటే ఇందులో హీరోలాగ ఏ ఒక్కరో తప్ప తక్కిన శాఖంతా అలా లంచగొండులుగా ఉన్నారని చెప్పకనే చెప్పాడా? ఏమో మరి! పైగా వాళ్లల్లో లేడీ ఆఫీసర్స్ ని మరీ నగలు కోసం కొట్టుకునే ఆశాపరులుగా చూపించాడు. సరే అది కూడా కామెడీలో భాగమే అనుకోవాలేమో.

ఇక సినిమాలో సీరియస్ డ్రాప్ ఎక్కడంటే చమ్మక్ చంద్ర పాత్ర వచ్చినప్పటినుంచీ. “శుభలగ్నం” సినిమాలో ఆలీ స్టైల్లో బిహేవ్ చేసే క్యారక్టర్ అది. అంటే సుమారు మూడు దశాబ్దాల క్రితం నాటి కామెడీ ట్రాక్. ఇక్కడ మేటర్ ఆ ట్రాక్ ఎంత పాతది అని కాదు..దాని ప్లేస్మెంట్ కుదరలేదు!

అలా అనుకుంటే 63 ఏళ్ల క్రితం నాటి ఒక సీన్ ని కూడా స్ఫూర్తి పొంది ఇందులో పెట్టాడు దర్శకుడు. అదే 1961 లో వచ్చిన “వాగ్దానం”లోని హరికథ పాటలోని ఒక సన్నివేశం. గుర్రపుబండి చక్రం గోతిలో పడితే హీరోయిన్ కృష్ణకుమారిని పక్కన పెట్టుకుని దానిని బయటికి లాగలేక ఇబ్బంది పడుతుంటాడు చలం. అదే సమయంలో అటుగా వస్తున్న నాగేశ్వరరావు దానిని ఆ గోతిలోంచి బయటికి తోస్తాడు. సరిగ్గా అప్పుడే “ఫెళ్లు మని విల్లు..గుండెలు జల్లుమనే..” అనే లైన్ వినిపిస్తుంది. అనుకరణే అయినా అది బాగుంది. స్క్రీన్ ప్లేలో చక్కగా కూర్చుంది.

మైనస్సులు పక్కన పెట్టి ప్లస్సులు మాట్లాడుకుంటే సంగీతం బాగుంది. పాటలు, నేపథ్య సంగీతం చక్కగా వినిపించాడు మిక్కీ జే మేయర్. కానీ ఒక పాటలో దేవీశ్రీప్రసాద్ ఎందుకు కనిపించాడో అర్థం కాదు.

రవితేజ డ్యాన్సులు అద్భుతంగా చేసాడు. ఎనెర్జీ ఏ మాత్రం తగ్గలేదు. తన పాత్రకు తాను పూర్తి న్యాయం చేసినా పైన చెప్పుకున్నట్టు విలన్ వీక్ గా ఉండడం వల్ల తన హీరోయిజం పాటలకి ,హీరోయిన్ తో రొమాన్స్ కే సరిపోయింది.

భాగ్యశ్రీ బోర్సే తెరకింపుగా ఉంది. నిజానికి ఈ చిత్రంపై యువతలో ఆసక్తి పెరగడానికి ఆమె కూడా ఒక ప్రధానమైన కారణం. అందంతో, డ్యాన్సులతో మార్కులేయించుకున్నా అభినయంలో ఇంకా పరిణతి చూపాలి. ప్రస్తుతమున్న కాంపిటీషన్లో కేవలం అందంతో నెట్టుకొచ్చేయడం కష్టం.

జగపతిబాబు పాత్ర ప్రారంభంలో చాలా సీరియస్ గా కనపడి తర్వాత కమెడియన్ గా మిగిలాడు. మధ్యలో హీరోయిన్ వచ్చి దండం పెడితే “దీర్ఘ సుమంగళీభవ” అని దీవిస్తాడు. విలనా, కమెడియనా, క్యారెక్టరా అనేది అర్ధం కాకుండా గందరగోళపరచిన పాత్ర ఇది.

సిద్ధు జొన్నలగడ్డ అతిధి పాత్రలో వచ్చి వెళ్లాడు. అతని ఇంట్రోకి ఇచ్చిన బిల్డప్పుకి, ఆ తర్వాత వచ్చిన సాదా సీదా ఫైట్ సీన్ తేలిపోయింది.

తనికెళ్ల భరణి అమితాబ్ అభిమానిగా కామెడీ టచ్ ఉన్న సెంటిమెంట్ క్యారెక్టర్లో ఓకే. హీరోయిన్ తండ్రిగా శరత్ ఖేదేకర్ ప్యాడింగ్ ఆర్టిష్టుగా సరిపోయారు. అన్నపూర్ణ చేత కామెడీలాంటిది చేయించారు. సీనియర్ నటుడు నారాయణరావు ఒక సీన్లో కనిపించారు. ఝాన్సి ప్రారంభ సన్నివేశాల్లో వచ్చి మాయమైంది.

కథతోనో, కథనంతోనో కాకుండా స్టార్ వేల్యూతోటి, నిర్మాణ విలువలతోటి, పూర్తి లైటర్ వీన్ ట్రీట్మెంట్ తోటి తీయాలనే ఫార్ములా వేసుకుని తీసిన చిత్రమిది. ఎందుకంటే ప్రధమార్ధంలో కొంతైనా హత్తుకున్న వినోదం ఇంటర్వల్ తర్వాత వెతుక్కున్నా కనపడదు. అలాగని యాక్షన్ పార్ట్ ఆకట్టుకుంటుందా అంటే అదీ లేదు.

ముఖ్యమంత్రి, ప్రధానమంత్రి నేరుగా ఫోన్ చేసినా కూడా “డోంట్ కేర్” అని వాళ్లకే పంచ్ డైలాగులు కొట్టే హీరోలని చూసి అభిమానులు చొక్కాలు చింపుకునే రోజులు పోయాయి. వాళ్లల్లో విద్యావంతులు, పరిణతి ఉన్నవారు పెరిగారు. అందుకే హీరోయిజాన్ని ఎంతవరకు నడపాలో, ఎలాంటి తూకంలో సీన్లు రాసుకోవాలో ఆలోచించాలి. ప్రాక్టికాలిటీకి దగ్గరగా సంభాషణలు రాసుకోవాలి.

హరీష్ శంకర్ మీద చాలా అంచనాలున్నాయి. జనాలకి “నచ్చెన్”, అభిమానులు “మెచ్చెన్” అనేట్టుగా తీయాలంటే కథా కథనాల్లో ఆత్మ లేకుండా ఎన్ని కమర్షియల్ రంగులద్దినా సరిపోదు. ఇప్పటికి మాత్రం అభిమానుల అంచనాలనే బుడగలని సూదితో “గుచ్చెన్” అని చెప్పుకోవాలి.

Vikrant Rona Review: More Ambition, Less Engaging

After the massive success of “KGF 2”, the focus has shifted to big-ticket movies from the Kannada film industry. Sudeep’s “Vikrannt Rona” has successfully generated hype with its pan-India promotion. Has this film lived up to expectations?

Let’s find out.

Story: Set in a fictional town named Kamarottu in a bygone era, an inspector of police gets killed brutally. A cop named Vikrant Rona steps in. The village kids are being murdered one by one. Rona begins his investigation deeper.

Just beside Janardhan Gambhira’s house, there lies a haunted house where Rona resides. At the same time, Sanju, who ran away when he was a kid, returns from London to see his mother and father Janardhan Gambhira. 

Vikrant Rona slowly zeroes on suspects. How will he unearth the story behind the killings and what secrets Vikrant is hiding in his heart?

Artistes’ Performances: Sudeep is a big star in Kannada and he exhibits all swag and style that will appeal to his core fans. As a performer, he does his best. He exhibits both style and able performance. 

Except for Sudeep, none of the actors make an impact. Most of the actors exhibit theatrical expressions. Nirup Bhandari, brother of the film's director plays an important role and his romantic track with Neetha Ashok is clumsy.  

Technical Excellence: The film is lavishly made. The production values are top class. The visual effects, cinematography, and production design are the major strengths of this movie. The technicians have delivered the best. But the songs are poor.

Analysis Of late, Kannada films are being produced on a grand scale. The ambition to attract the pan-Indian audience is visible in “Vikrant Rona”. The production design and the stylish taking the makers exhibited are part of this exercise. But style should complement the substance. “Vikrant Rona” is all sound and fury, but nothing else. 

The story takes place in a period when a liter of petrol was just Rs 6. It must be in the 1970s! And the backdrop is a deep forest. It begins much like an adventure thriller. Then it turns into a supernatural thriller. Once Sudeep enters the scene, it becomes an investigation thriller. Much later it turns into a revenge saga. Then there is a sentimental drama. 

Director Anup Bhandari has put all genres in a grinder and blended them.

In the first half of the film, all Sudeep does is investigation wearing a hat like a Sherlock Holmes. Then we see a boring romantic track between Anup Bhandari and Neetha Ashok. We also get to see a song shot on them. But despite the inconsistency, the first half of the film carries some mystery and is intriguing to some extent. Although the film is inspired by films like Aamir Khan’s “Talaash”, and Fahadh Faasil’s “Athiran”, it is watchable till the first half. 

The second half of the film goes haywire. When it becomes clear the real motive behind the killings, the film turns out to be a boring affair. Even the so-called item song featuring Jacqueline Fernandez fails to rescue it. The climax is a big letdown.

In a nutshell, “Vikrant Rona” doesn’t engage us despite having a top-quality production design. The style doesn’t help the film at all.
