More about the Admissions Process

As you prepare to apply, please be sure to familiarize yourself with the admissions process for your desired program.

Non-discrimination Policy

Harvard University's policy is to make decisions concerning applicants, students, faculty, and staff on the basis of the individual's qualifications to contribute to Harvard's educational objectives and institutional needs. The principle of not discriminating against individuals based on characteristics such as race, color, national or ethnic origin, age, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, political beliefs, veteran status, or disability unrelated to job or course of study requirements is consistent with the purposes of a university and with the law.

Civic Engagement

The Harvard Graduate School of Education strives to prepare leaders in education and to generate knowledge to improve student opportunity, achievement, and success. Civic leadership and learning are important components in achieving this. Those who engage responsibly in exercising their rights and freedoms will not have their chances of admission compromised, nor will admissions offers be revoked, regardless of whether they face disciplinary action by their schools or districts as a result of peaceful protest.

Application Review Process

While our admissions process is highly selective, it is also personalized, comprehensive, and fair. There is no single formula or criterion for admission. HGSE looks for students with a passion for education, diverse life and work experiences, and a deep commitment to making an impact in the world — as educators, researchers, policymakers, and service-minded leaders of character and integrity.

FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (Buckley Amendment) allows you to access your education records if you are admitted and decide to enroll at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. If you enroll at HGSE, your educational records would generally include information like your enrollment status, grades, and your admissions records. More information about FERPA can be found on the U.S. Department of Education website .

Connect with Our Faculty

Starting a doctoral program is a long term commitment. During the five-year program, students are trained to be a skilled researcher utilizing a rigorous curriculum and one-on-one faculty mentors. To ensure our program is a good fit for both the student and faculty, we strongly encourage applicants to review the faculty profiles within the area group of choice and reach out to those who research interests overlap with their own. An introductory email would include:

  • Name and program of interest
  • Term you plan to apply
  • Highlight 1-2 publications you found interesting from their profile and why
  • How faculty research overlaps with your own
  • Request a 10-15 minute meeting on the phone/Zoom

Application Materials

All application materials must be submitted by the posted deadlines to ensure adequate timing of admission decisions. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure all application materials are received by the posted deadline or the application will be closed as incomplete. Make sure to check the status of application materials. Note: no refunds will be issued for incomplete or withdrawn applications.

All applicants:

Upload an unofficial transcript for every college and university attended in the application prior to submitting/paying the application fee. All colleges and universities attended should be reported even if coursework was transferred to another college or university. Make sure your name and the institution name are visible on the unofficial transcript.

International applicants:

An unofficial transcript and certificate of degree/diploma in both the original language and English from the home institution are required. Make sure the university seal is visible on the documents. If the home institution does not provide English translations, a notarized copy may be submitted. Read more about international academic records here .

If offered admission/accept the offer, an official e-transcript or paper transcript will be required prior to registration.

Acquire three letters of recommendation from academic sources. At least two letters should be requested from professors who are in a position to analyze your academic ability and potential for success in a rigorous graduate program. Professional letters may be used if the applicant has been away from school for several years. All letters of recommendation must be in English. If you have been enrolled in a previous graduate program, it is required that one letter be from your research or program advisor in that graduate program. Letters of recommendation cannot be released to the applicant and cannot be forwarded elsewhere.

The Statement of Purpose is your opportunity to discuss your intent for pursuing the graduate program and how it aligns with your career objectives. While not required, it is highly recommended that you connect with the SOE faculty member whose research interests align with yours prior to submitting an application. The Statement of Purpose essay should then list the faculty member(s) you wish to work with highlighting the specific research you are interested in.

The Personal History Statement is about your background, culture, economic and social experiences, and how those elements have led you to pursue a graduate degree.

Each essay is approximately 1-2 pages double-spaced in a Word/PDF document.

The writing sample should be a research or final class paper submitted for a previous course on any topic, and should not exceed 30 pages. It is preferred that you be the sole author of the paper.

Submit a copy of your most recent CV/resume highlighting academic and professional accomplishments, publications and other noteworthy achievements.

Request TOEFL or IELTS scores electronically from the testing center to be sent to UCR. UC Riverside code: R4839 TOEFL or IELTS scores must be submitted by students whose native language is not English and who do not have a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from an institution where English is the exclusive language of instruction for the institution. Doctoral programs.

The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.

In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.

The doctoral degree in Education at the GSE includes doctoral program requirements as well as a specialization, as listed below, overseen by a faculty committee from one of the GSE's three academic areas.

Program Specific Admissions Requirements

In addition to the general admission requirements, specific admission procedures for the Ph.D. are listed below. Submit the following items to the Office of Graduate Admissions prior to registering for any graduate courses. Where noted, forms are available online at: http://www.liberty.edu/apply .

  • Academic Records.   Applicants must submit an official transcript indicating successful completion of a master’s degree program from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Transcripts should be sent directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions from all schools previously attended.
  • Ph.D. applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above on graduate degree required for entrance to the program.

Transfer of Credit

All graduate transfer credits are subject to the approval of the School of Education (SOE) Graduate Committee. Such courses must carry a grade of at least a B- and be comparable to Liberty University graduate courses. Transfer credit will only be considered from institutions or schools accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. With approval, up to 30 hours may be transferred into the Ph.D. program. It is the responsibility of each applicant to supply official transcripts along with a written request to have credit applied to the degree program. Transfer credits must have been completed within the previous seven (7) years to be eligible for transfer to the Ph.D.

Students who have earned an Education Specialist in Curriculum and Instruction degree through Liberty are permitted to apply up to 27 hours (as applicable) from that degree toward the PhD in Education - Curriculum and Instruction.

Dissertation

Candidates must adhere to the time frames noted on their specific DCP for proposal and dissertation completion. Exceeding  time limits will result in removal from the Ph.D. program.

Before beginning the dissertation research, the doctoral dissertation committee must approve the research proposal. The dissertation is expected to exhibit scholarship, reflect mastery of technique, and make a distinctive contribution to the field of knowledge in which the candidate has specialized. A faculty committee of two (2) members, comprising a chair and  committee member, is responsible for the general supervision of the doctoral dissertation. A formal defense of the dissertation is required for final approval.

Once candidates enter the dissertation phase as noted on their specific DCP, they must maintain continuous enrollment (Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters) until they complete all degree requirements. If they do not, they will break enrollment, and they will be required to apply for readmission if/when they wish to resume the pursuit of their degree. They will have to complete their degree under the Degree Completion Plan (DCP) in effect at the time of their readmission.

Time Limits for Degree Completion

The time limit for completing the degree from the date of admission to the program is seven years for the Ph.D. Only in unusual circumstances may the candidate be granted an extension. Granting of an extension of time will usually result in additional requirements.

There will be a time limit of five years for completion of the Ph.D. for candidates who were granted 18 hours or more of advanced standing from a previously completed Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

Any candidate who does not complete coursework within the permissible time limit, for any reason including discontinued enrollment, must reapply for admission. A candidate may reapply only once, and will be subject to the current standards and curriculum. The SOE Graduate Committee will determine if any previous courses are sufficiently time sensitive and must be repeated. Beginning with the date of readmission, the candidate’s time limit for degree completion is determined by the number of hours remaining.

Nearly all members of the 118th Congress have a bachelor’s degree – and most have a graduate degree, too

More than nine-in-ten U.S. representatives and senators have a college degree, continuing a decadeslong trend. In the 118th Congress, 94% of representatives and all but one senator hold at least a bachelor’s degree, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. House and Senate biographical data .

A line graph showing that almost every member of the 118th Congress holds a college degree

The share of voting members of Congress with a college education has steadily increased over time. In the 79th Congress (1945-46), for instance,  56% of House members and 75% of senators  had a bachelor’s degree or higher. By the 103rd Congress (1993-94), this share had risen to 90% of members or more in both chambers. In each Congress since then, nine-in-ten or more members have held at least a bachelor’s degree.

The share of members in each chamber with at least a bachelor’s degree peaked in the 116th Congress (2019-20), when 96% of representatives and all 100 senators had one. Although both shares have remained high, they have slightly declined since then.

This analysis includes the 534 voting members of Congress seated as of Feb. 2, 2023.

This analysis builds on earlier Pew Research Center work to analyze the educational attainment of lawmakers in the U.S. Congress. To determine the educational background of lawmakers in the 118th Congress, we used U.S. House and Senate biographical data . Data on the educational attainment of U.S. adults overall comes from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Our analysis reflects the 534 voting members of Congress as of Feb. 2, 2023, not including one vacant seat in the House following  the death of Democratic Virginia Rep. Donald McEachin . Independent members of Congress are counted with the party they caucus with.

Those with at least a bachelor’s degree include a small number of members who do not hold a bachelor’s degree but have an advanced degree in a field that does not require one. For example, Republican Rep. Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee completed some undergraduate coursework at East Tennessee State University before going on to receive a doctorate in pharmacy from Mercer University.

In total counts of 118th Congress’ most-attended universities, lawmakers with multiple graduate degrees are counted once with each of the schools they have a graduate degree from; medical residencies are not included.

In the House, nearly two-thirds of representatives (64%) have a graduate degree. Five representatives (1%) have an associate degree but no bachelor’s. Another 22 members (5%) do not have a degree. This group includes one member who has a professional certification: Democrat Cori Bush of Missouri has a registered nursing diploma.

Among the 100 current senators, 78 have at least one graduate degree. Republican Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma is the lone senator without at least a bachelor’s degree. He holds an associate degree from Oklahoma State University of Technology. Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, earned a doctorate in medicine from Duke University Medical School but does not hold a bachelor’s .

A chart showing that members of the 118th Congress are far more likely than Americans overall to have a bachelor's or graduate degree

The educational attainment of the current Congress far outpaces that of the overall U.S. population. In 2021, around four-in-ten American adults ages 25 and older (38%) had a bachelor’s degree or more education, including 14% who had a graduate degree, according to  U.S. Census Bureau data . Another 10% held an associate degree, while the largest share (52%) did not have a college or associate degree.

The educational attainment of members of Congress differs somewhat by political party, at least in the House. While 95% of Democrats and 93% of Republicans in the House hold at least a bachelor’s degree, Democrats are more likely than Republicans to have completed a graduate degree (73% vs. 55%). Fourteen of the 22 representatives without a college degree are Republicans. In the Senate, similar shares in both parties have undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Some universities are especially well represented in Congress. For example, about three dozen members of the House (9%) have at least one degree from Harvard University. In the Senate, 13% of senators have at least one degree from Harvard, while 9% have a degree from Yale University and 7% have at least one degree from Georgetown University.

House members are more likely than senators to have completed a degree at a college or university in the state they represent. About two-thirds of representatives (64%) have at least one such degree, and 21% received both an undergraduate and a graduate degree from an institution in their state. Among senators, nearly half (48 of 100) have at least one degree from a school in the state they represent, including 20 senators who have both a bachelor’s and an advanced degree from a school in the state they currently represent.

USM School of Education Ranked in U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Education Schools

Thu, 04/18/2024 - 08:41am | By: Karelia Pitts

The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) School of Education has been ranked No. 99 among the 2024 Best Education Schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

Designed for prospective students looking to advance their education, the Best Education Schools rankings evaluate programs on nine distinct factors that include indicators related to student selectivity, faculty resources, research activity and peer assessment. The rankings evaluate all public and private institutions across the country to empower prospective students to choose the best fit for their educational needs and career goals.

“The USM School of Education has been intentional in its efforts to increase the societal impact it makes in the state and region. This ranking is clear evidence of their daily dedication to our mission of transforming the human condition through exemplary teaching, excellence in research, and meaningful service,” said Dr. Trent Gould, dean of Southern Miss’ College of Education and Human Sciences. “I couldn’t be prouder of this group of faculty and their commitment to this community and our K-12 partners.”

By collecting education school data annually, U.S. News is able to present the latest enrollment numbers, job placement rates, faculty statistics and other essential quality indicators that help prospective students make informed decisions. In 2023, USM ranked No. 138. The year-over-year climb that allowed USM to break into the top 100 schools was achieved in part by other colleges of education across the nation taking notice of the impact Golden Eagles are making and commending those efforts through the peer evaluation process.

“I am tremendously proud of the work being done in the School of Education and its commitment to student success,” said University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Lance Nail. “Thanks to the dedication of our faculty and staff, Southern Miss graduates are ready for success in classrooms across our state and nation.”

The USM School of Education offers an undergraduate program in elementary education as well as graduate programs in educational administration, higher education, elementary curriculum and instruction, special education, alternate route licensure, dyslexia therapy and educational research.

“We were founded with the audacious goal of establishing a state teacher training college, and these rankings demonstrate our ongoing excellence and steadfast commitment to providing high-quality instruction,” said University President Dr. Joseph S. Paul. “We are honored to be recognized on the national level and proud to be one of only two schools in the state to make the top 100 list.”

Prospective students can see how USM compares to other institutions and how the rankings are calculated on USNews.com .
