I Tried Macro Photography With My Smartphone: Here Are My Best Shots

Don’t believe these 7 myths about smartphone photography, the 5 best slideshow template resources i trust for my presentations.

Talking about your career journey is a nerve-wracking exercise, whether in an interview or presenting to a large audience. You can make this process much more exciting by narrating your journey as a story.

A story that contains facts, figures, anecdotes, and more stories to illustrate your knowledge, experience, expertise, conflict resolution techniques, and insights. Here's how you can harness the power of PowerPoint to present your career journey as an interesting story:

1. Ask the Right Questions

Before you begin creating your presentation, you need to have a good idea about the content you will include in it. You can write down bullet points that act as the deck outline, or ask yourself pertinent questions. What kind of questions should you ask yourself? Here's a list to get you started:

  • Who's my target audience; recruitment teams, college/school students, job fair attendees, or working professionals?
  • What do I aim to achieve with this presentation?
  • What professional events, stories, incidents, and insights should I include?
  • What statistics, tips, and professional highlights should I mention?

Your presentation can go in widely different directions based on your answers.

2. Draw a Content Flow Chart

Man standing in front of a White Board with a Flow Chart drawn on it

Now that you have a good idea about what to include, it's time to organize this information into a seamlessly flowing story. Draw a flowchart or a simple diagram to indicate what goes where. This is the storyboarding stage, where you'll order the content and fine-tune the details to the last fact and figure.

3. Choose Content Format and Media

Different Types of Slides With Various Infographics to showcase information concisely.

Once you're done with the “what” and “where,” it's time to address the “how.” How do I present my career story as concisely as possible? Not every part of your journey needs a slide with elaborate textual content. You can use graphs and timelines to depict career trajectories and time spent in different roles. Use bolded numbers with labels or SmartArt and Charts to highlight critical statistics.

A short video can explain your work methodology with animations and voiceover. Concept images, tag clouds, and simple sketches can convey information more concisely than a slide full of text. Once you've decided how each part in the flowchart will take shape on the slides and have the media content ready, it's time to launch the PowerPoint app.

4. Pick the Right Template to Tell Your Story

Choosing the Right template in PowerPoint

Searching for story-based templates brings up lots of options on PowerPoint that have different slides to highlight stats, show graphs, depict growth, insert a video, etc.

You can insert your information in the appropriate slides, clone the ones that need repetition, delete the ones that don't fit in with your story, and insert slides from other presentation decks that cater to your requirements. Just make sure to edit the theme of this slide to match the main template.

Using a premade template to prepare a professional presentation . You'll not have to waste time deciding on fonts, colors, themes, and manually inserting diagrams and charts. You can also download or buy presentation templates from online resources like Crystal Graphics or SlideUpLift . These sites offer custom templates to showcase career journeys, with creative slides to present information concisely.

You can also use the Slide Master feature in PowerPoint to create a custom theme for your presentation.

5. Design Your PowerPoint Presentation

It's time to execute your vision. Use as many slides as you need without worrying about the length of the presentation. Here are a few quick PowerPoint tips to help you present your career journey in a stellar way:

  • Use high-quality images, videos, and graphics.

Theme Fonts feature in PowerPoint

  • Use Animations and Transitions sparingly.

Presentation Record Feature in PowerPoint

  • Use Presented View mode to check how your slides look, keep an eye on your notes, and edit as needed.

Using Section Divider Slide for Quiz Questions in PowerPoint

6. Polish Your Stories

Your career journey would be incomplete without highlighting your professional growth and maturity, lessons learned, and insights gained. Use the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Results to avoid rambling and keep it short and straightforward.

When narrating stories, describe the situation or conflict you were facing, what needed to be done, what was done, what you learned from the experience, and how it has impacted your decision-making process. The STAR method touches upon all the crucial details of a learning incident, allowing you to tell more stories in fewer words.

7. Edit Your Slides

Now you need to step into the shoes of your target audience. Look at every slide critically. Think about the value each slide adds to the rest of the presentation, and decide whether it stays or goes.

Review Feature in PowerPoint with Spellcheck and Thesaurus

Are all your stories helpful and needed? Are your statistics factually accurate? How long will it take for you to walk through the entire set? Use these and other relevant questions as markers to cut down the number of slides.

8. Deliver With Poise

Making a kick-ass presentation is just one part of depicting your career journey. The other part consists of being a good storyteller. Use the PowerPoint Speaker Coach to improve your presentation skills . Memorize your notes, pay attention to your hand gestures, make eye contact, and do not read from the slides. Practice with a timer until you can deliver it in the precise amount of time you've been allocated to present.

Present Your Career Journey With Aplomb

Look for Behavioral Interview related questions online and how to ace them before you sit down to create your career journey presentation.

boy and girl preparing employee experience presentation

Hey there, fellow presentation enthusiast!

Are you ready to dive into the world of crafting the perfect employee experience presentation?

Well, you're in the right place. In this guide, we'll explore why employee experience presentations matter, how to structure them effectively, and provide some invaluable do's and don'ts. By the end of this journey, you'll be well-equipped to create outstanding presentations that captivate your audience.

Why does employee experience matter?

Employee experience isn't just another buzzword; it's a game-changer. It encompasses everything an employee encounters during their journey within an organization. This includes their interactions with colleagues, superiors, work environment, and the overall culture. Now, let's explore why it matters.

Employee engagement: The key to success

  • Employee engagement is the secret sauce that drives an organization's success. Engaged employees are more committed, productive, and loyal. Crafting an exceptional employee experience is the gateway to boosting engagement.

Retention and satisfaction

  • High-quality employee experiences result in better retention rates and higher job satisfaction. When employees feel valued and supported, they're more likely to stay with your organization.

Enhanced productivity

  • Happy employees are productive employees. When you prioritize their experience, you unlock their full potential, driving higher productivity levels.

How to structure an effective employee experience presentation

Now that you understand the importance of employee experience, let's roll up our sleeves and get into the nuts and bolts of creating a presentation that truly shines.

When it comes to structuring your employee experience presentation, think of it as a journey you're taking your audience on. Here are the stages to make it easier:

1. Introduction: Setting the stage

  • Start with a compelling introduction that grabs your audience's attention. Share a relatable anecdote or statistic to pique their interest.

2. Defining employee experience

  • Clearly define what employee experience means within your organization. Use relatable examples to make it tangible.

7. Engagement strategies

  • Dive deep into employee engagement strategies. Share real-world examples and statistics to support your points.

8. Visual aids: More than just charts

  • Don't just stop at charts. Discuss other visual aids like infographics and maps to convey your message effectively.

9. Workplace satisfaction

  • Explore how your presentation can impact workplace satisfaction and retention.

10. Final touches

  • Provide tips for putting the final touches on your presentation. Discuss themes, corporate branding, and how to ensure your presentation is on-brand.

How to Create a Successful Project Presentation

How to Create a Successful Project Presentation

Written by: Unenabasi Ekeruke

An illustration showcasing a project presentation being built.

You’ve spent time working on a project that could be a potential game-changer for your company or client. Now you’re buzzing to present it to your team, investors and other key stakeholders.

Creating and delivering project presentations can be nerve-racking and you probably have one question running through your mind.

How do you get the decision-makers to understand your project or secure their buy-in?

Considering that some companies have had about 12% of failed projects in the past year, you want to create presentations that are not only convincing but memorable.

With the right project presentation deck, you can win and keep your audience’s attention long enough to explain project details and why it’s sure to succeed.

Not sure how to create successful project presentations? We’ve got you covered.

This article will show you how to set project goals and create winning presentations that take your project to the next level.

Here’s a short selection of 8 easy-to-edit project presentation templates you can edit, share and download with Visme. View more templates below:

powerpoint presentation work experience

Let's get to it.

1 Set Goals for Your Project

Before you dive into the main details of your project presentation, you want to answer these questions:

  • What is your project set out to achieve?
  • Why is it important for you and your team to achieve your set goals?
  • How do you plan to communicate your goals to your audience?

If you have to make long guesses before answering these questions, you’ve got a lot of work to do.

Here’s what you should know. Beautiful or well-articulated project presentations aren’t a substitute for project planning. Without clear goals, your project is already set up to fail. And your investors might think, “why bother listening?”

Many project managers tend to rush through the goal-setting phase, but we don't recommend this. That’s because you could be setting yourself up for failure.

Once you clearly define your project goals, you can get stakeholders to buy into them.

Now the question is, how do you set goals for your project and achieve them? One way to do that is by using the SMART goal setting method.

Setting SMART Project Goals

SMART is an acronym that stands for S pecific, M easurable, A chievable, R elevant and T ime-Bound.

SMART goals are a staple for planning and executing successful projects. It takes a deeper look into the finer details your audience care about, such as:

  • Project plan and schedule,
  • Project timelines,
  • Milestones,
  • Potential roadblocks and more

For example, let's say your project aims to improve customer experience on web and mobile devices. Notice this example describes the end goal. But it doesn’t specify how you’ll work to enhance customer experience.

Here’s how using SMART goals provides direction for your planned project.

When setting your goals, be clear and specific about what you want to achieve in the end.

A specific goal could be: “We want to build a responsive website and mobile app for our company to improve customer experience. This project will require inputs from our product design, software and marketing department”.

Measurable

During your presentation, you'd have to answer questions like:

  • What metrics will you use to determine if you meet the goal?
  • How will you know you’re on the right track?

Having metrics in place will help you evaluate your project. Plus, you’d be able to monitor progress and optimize your project to achieve better results.

It doesn’t matter if you’re planning a short-term or long-term project. Ensure you set metrics and milestones that count towards your goal.

From our earlier example, a measurable goal could be to have:

  • Over 100,000 mobile app downloads on Google Playstore and Apple App Store.
  • A 20% bounce rate on your website and a 15% conversion rate on mobile and web.

Attainable

One of the most critical questions you want to ask during goal-setting is, “Can we achieve our set goal?” Do we have the resources to accomplish the goal within the available time frame?

If the answer is no, then you’d have to consider what it would take to achieve those goals. This may require adjusting your goals or the resources needed to achieve your goal.

Although it’s okay to be ambitious, you should also be realistic.  For example, getting 200,000 app downloads in one week could be overly ambitious if you’ve just launched your app. However, if you set out to achieve that goal in three months, that could make your project practicable.

Your project goals need to align with your broader business goals. Are your goals relevant to the growth and success of the company?  Are they worth allocating resources for?

For instance, if your company is B2B and doesn’t plan to expand to the B2C market, launching an e-commerce website would be an irrelevant goal.

Time-Bound

Regardless of your project type and size, you should set time frames. Setting target dates for deliverables creates a sense of urgency and motivates you to hit your goals.

From our example above, a time-bound goal could be “We aim to achieve 100,000 mobile app downloads and a 15% conversion rate by the end of the fiscal year. Our company will launch the mobile app by Q3 with a robust marketing campaign that will run through the end of next fiscal year.”

Setting SMART goals doesn’t have to be a challenging task. Use the template below to set project goals that position your business for success.

Communicate Project Goals to Your Team Members

After you've set your goals, your team will play a key role in helping you achieve them. So you ensure they understand these things:

  • Why the project goals are in place
  • What it's supposed to deliver for your business and customers
  • How their role, team and department contributes to the success of the project

Unless you’re clear on this, the project can derail and move in all sorts of unwanted directions.

Rather than slam the goals you’ve set on your team, make it a collaborative effort.  Spend time talking to your team and stakeholders about the project goals.

Don't limit your communication to people within your department. You can reach out to people in other departments like sales, operations, finance, etc., to see how well your goals align with theirs.

To give your team a better understanding, you can communicate your project goals in a variety of ways, including:

  • Visuals (videos, images, charts, infographics, etc.)
  • Verbal presentation
  • Documentations

By doing that, you’re sure to get their valuable feedback, buy-in and commitment to the project. Plus, getting your team on board with your project plan will up your chances of successful execution.

2 Lay Out Your Project Plan

Once you’ve set your goals, the next big step is to outline how you'll achieve them. An excellent place to start is by organizing your project into an actionable plan and steps for execution.

You might wonder why this step is important for creating a successful project presentation.

Whether you’re planning a small or big project, writing a detailed plan, structure and layout puts everything into perspective. It eliminates vagueness and helps your audience grasp the project roadmap without missing the points.

Your project plan should contain the technical and non-technical project details. Therefore, you want to give yourself an edge by using a project presentation template that clearly explains all the activities and steps.

Not only that, your presentation structure should be simple and easy to follow.

Depending on the project type, your plan could include key details such as:

  • The goals and objectives you've outlined earlier
  • Your project scope, methodology and framework
  • Project milestones, deliverable and acceptance criteria
  • Project schedule and timelines
  • Resources and budget estimates, etc.

A project management presentation template available to customize in Visme.

There's no hard and fast rule for laying out your project plan. However, if you want to create a memorable plan that will keep your audience engaged, you could break it down into three parts, including:

Introduction

  • Conclusion and key takeaways

Your introduction should provide a brief overview of what you’re going to talk about and why it’s relevant to your audience. You could start by writing down the project name and the executive summary.

Think of your executive summary as an abridged version of the project plan.

If your audience read only your executive summary, would they have all the information they need about your project? If the answer is yes, your executive summary has served its purpose.

The length of your executive summary will depend on what you intend to cover in your project plan.  However, we recommend keeping your executive summary one or two pages long.

You can include key information such as:

  • Objectives of the project
  • Key points of the project plan
  • Results, conclusions and project recommendations

Keep in mind that not everyone will have the time to dive into the details of your project plan.

Having a snapshot of your project brings clarity to key stakeholders and collaborators. It also enables people who aren't actively involved in the project to understand it at a glance.

Ready to create your own presentation in minutes?

  • Add your own text, images and more
  • Customize colors, fonts and everything else
  • Choose from hundreds of slide designs and templates
  • Add interactive buttons and animations

The body of your project plan is where you have the full project details and everything relevant to its success.

Here you can break your project into deliverables, tasks, milestones and schedules (start and end dates).

Ensure you precisely define the resources you need to complete the project, including finances, team, time, technology, physical resources and more.

This is the part where you sum up your project plan with key takeaways. Your conclusion should include what you expect from your audience, including key action points and next steps.

Writing your intro, body and conclusion may sound like a lot of information. But instead of writing multiple pages of text, incorporating visuals can make your project presentations more effective.

By using images, videos, infographics and charts , you can capture all the vital information and help your audience understand your message better.

Visme presentation templates are effective for visualizing different sections of your project plan. They are professionally designed and easy for anyone to craft high-quality project plans that keep their team on track.

Use the project plan templates below to kickstart your project planning process.

3 Outline the Problem and Solution

You've just spent time crafting your project action plan. Now it’s time to communicate your project plan and goals with your audience.

Project presentations are a lot like sales pitches. Whether you’re presenting your project plan to clients or creating a pitch deck for investors, your job is to keep your audience hooked right from the start till the end.

One of the most potent ways of grabbing your audience's attention is by highlighting their pain points.

It’s not enough to have beautiful slides that showcase your amazing product features and project activities.

Make sure you set up your project presentation to:

  • Outline your audience pain points
  • Emphasize how your project, product or service works to address their pain points
  • Explain how they’ll benefit from using your product or investing in your project

In a nutshell, your audience should have a clear insight into how your project makes their life better. When they’re clear on this, they’ll most likely listen to the solutions you bring to the table and take the desired action.

Don’t make sweeping assumptions about your audience.

If you’re looking to get them on board, dedicate a slide to discuss their problems and solutions. Make them understand how your project benefits them.

A goals presentation slide available in Visme.

Not sure what your audience's pain points are? Go ahead and do these things:

  • Run a persona survey or interview existing customers. This will help you build a data-driven user persona that you can use for all types of business and marketing decisions.
  • Talk to your customer support and success team. They have close relationships with your customers, so they know their challenges and what they want. If they don’t know these things, do them a favor and create a customer success program .
  • Interact with your community, ask for feedback and involvement. The more you engage with your consumers, the more you understand their challenges, work toward solving and get them invested in your brand.
  • Keeping an eye on relevant social media trends,  Twitter hashtags, Facebook trends
  • Join relevant online forums like Quora, Reddit, Stack Exchange, etc.

4 Keep Your Presentation Slides Short

When creating project presentations, prioritize quality over quantity. Be sure to keep your slides short and simple. When you do this, your audience will be glad you value their time.

Remember, this isn’t the time to slam your audience with lengthy and irrelevant jargon. Instead, keep your slides on topics and hit the main points without the boring and unnecessary details.

Here’s why you need to keep your presentation brief:

  • Concise presentation slides are not only powerful, but they are also memorable.
  • Studies have shown that during project or business presentations, attention levels drop sharply after 30 minutes . By creating lengthy presentations, you risk losing your audience's attention halfway.
  • Nobody wants to sit and watch you flip tons of slides for hours. With shorter slides, you can capture your audience's attention and get them to focus on the message.
  • Most people might have limited time or have short attention spans. So they’d want to quickly digest information and move on to the next best thing.

How do you keep your project presentations short?

  • If your slide doesn’t add value to your presentation, it shouldn’t earn a spot on your deck.
  • Supercharge your slide deck with captivating visuals that capture more information
  • Adopt proven methods for preparing your slide

For example, the 10/20/30 rule by Guy Kawasaki is one of the most popular methods used by experts. The rule recommends using ten slides for 20 minutes presentations (about two minutes per slide). It also specifies using a font size of at least 30 for text.

This will enable your audience to digest the messages on your screen while you’re talking.

A business model presentation slide available in Visme.

Keep in mind that this isn’t an iron-clad rule for presentation. There are other rules such as Pecha Kucha method , Takahashi method, Lessig method, etc. You can adapt any of these rules to suit your project presentation needs.

5 Use Less Text and More Visuals

Another great way to keep your slides brief yet interesting is using less text and more visuals.

Remember, your slide should aid your verbal presentation and not replace it. So you want to avoid crowding too much information on one slide.

Cluttering your presentation with too much text could:

  • Overwhelm your audiences and bore them
  • Shift your audience's attention to the text, making your presentation less effective.

Instead, use one slide to present each idea. Marketing guru Seth Godin recommends no more than six words per slide .

People retain more information when it’s presented in bite-size chunks and visuals. This applies to B2B, B2C audiences, project managers and corporate executives.

About 59% of business executives say they’d rather watch a video about a topic than read about it. Hence the need to supercharge your project presentation with compelling visuals that capture and bring your audience’s attention right where you want it.

Steve Jobs’ MacWorld Keynote presentation in 2007 is an excellent example of how to enhance your presentation with compelling visuals.

6 Use Quality Visuals, Diagrams and Presentation Aids

Visuals are important for making successful project presentations. Beyond grabbing the audience’s attention and keeping them engaged, viewers recall 95% of a message when presented in visual form. But when shared via text, they retain only about 10%.

There are many types of visual aids you can use in your presentations, including:

  • Graphs and charts
  • Heat and choropleth maps
  • Scatter plots
  • Screenshots and more

Using images and videos will up your chances of getting audience engagements and positive responses to your call-to-action (CTA).

Gantt charts , whiteboard drawings and mind maps are ideal for visualizing early-stage project designs. You can use charts, diagrams, maps and trees to present the project architecture for technology-related projects.

If you’re working on product development projects, consider adding sketches, flowcharts , models and prototypes to your slide.

Pie charts are excellent for showing percentages. Vertical bar charts indicate changes over time, while horizontal bar charts help you compare quantities.

Infographics are perfect for visualizing data and explaining complex information like market trends.

Here’s the interesting part. Visme has the tools you need for every job. The software allows you to add different visuals, infographics, charts and graphs to your deck and customize them to suit your needs.

You can change design, text and background colors, add or remove legends, animate charts, etc.

You can also use maps to represent geographic information. Or, use progress bars, thermometers, radials and widgets to visualize stats and figures as shown in the template below.

A pie chart template available to customize in Visme.

When adding visuals to your slide, don’t go overboard. Stick to a minimum of two images per slide. In addition, make sure your visuals are relevant to your project presentation.

While designing your presentation slides , always stick to high-quality visuals.  Blurry or low-resolution images or videos can be a major turn-off for viewers.

With high-quality visuals, your presentations will be crisp and clear, even on large screens.

The slide below is an excellent example of how to power your presentations with compelling visuals.

7 Pay Attention to Design

Want to create impressive presentations that pop? If the answer is yes, you need to pay attention to your design details. Your design can make or break your project presentation.

Whether you are an experienced designer or a novice, design tools like Visme give you an edge. You can create compelling presentation designs for your business in a few minutes.

The beautiful thing is that you don’t have to break the bank to make stunning project presentations. You'll find beautiful ready-made templates and millions of stunning royalty-free images for your slides.

Here are tips you should consider while designing your slides.

Use the Right Color Combination

If you want to make your presentations appealing, use color moderately.

We get it; everyone loves color. But using too many colors can make your presentations look chaotic and unpleasant.

Your color choice can influence how your audience grasps and responds to your presentation. A general rule of thumb is to pick colors that evoke positive emotions in your audience.

For example, warm colors like yellow, orange and red convey feelings of excitement and positivity. On the other hand, cool colors (blue, green and violet) reflect an aura of calmness.

When combining colors, aim for a balanced color scheme. For example, if your slide or image background is dark, your text and design elements should have bright colors. This contrast will make your project presentation legible and visually appealing.

You can learn about color psychology and how to use it in your next presentation design by watching the video below.

Use Clear and Consistent Typography

Optimizing your typography can make a difference in how people perceive your message. So you want to make sure your slide looks organized, professional and sends the right message.

Here’s how you can make this happen:

  • Use fonts that embody the spirit of your brand
  • Keep your text styles consistent throughout your presentation. We recommend you stick to a maximum of three fonts.
  • Avoid fancy fonts and tiny text that strain the reader's eyes. Rather use fonts like Arial, Time News Roman, Calibri and other legible fonts suited for small and large screens.
  • Use a font size of at least 30 for the body text and 36 for titles.

In addition, remember to present your text using the color scheme we mentioned earlier. This will keep your text visible over your background.

Take a look at this slide from one of our presentation templates. Notice how the design, fonts and color combination blends in to make the visuals pop.

8 Start With a Presentation Template

Whether you’re a newbie or pro, creating project presentations that pack a punch can be time-consuming.

Let’s say you’ve got a deadline looming. You’d have to deal with writing your project outline, preparing your slide notes, designing your slides, sourcing and incorporating visuals and more.

Handling these things from scratch could slow you down or make your presentations untidy.

Using presentation templates could save you from all the stress. They help you make professional-looking project presentations fast and easy.

Since the slides are pre-designed, you’ll find a place to insert every possible piece of content you need. Be it a progress bar, chart, graph, table, video or image, the design is right there.

All you need to do is type your content, input data or insert the image. And boom, your presentation is ready to go.

In addition, using presentation templates offers brand consistency in terms of font, style, layout, colors and overall design. You can customize and share templates with your project team to keep your presentations uniform.

The title and main body slide, image and chart layout and fonts are set in the template. Therefore formatting your slide becomes a breeze—no more messy or cluttered project presentations.

Visme has a wide selection of templates designed to make your presentations shine. You’ll find millions of pixel-perfect graphics, icons, design elements and professionally designed templates for any purpose, industry and project type.

Regardless of your skill level, you can customize your templates like the one below. Just add your content and your project presentations will be ready in a few minutes.

9 Present Your Project Like a Pro

If you follow all the tips we shared above, you’ve probably got the perfect project presentation on paper.  Great stuff, but your job isn’t done yet.

Your delivery is the final piece of the puzzle, and you’ve got to make it count.

Here’s the thing. Your presentation could flop if the delivery isn’t convincing. Hence the need to plan your delivery and drive your message across with passion and enthusiasm.

Here's how to deliver project presentations that leave an impact.

Practice Makes Perfect

Did you know that Steve Jobs used to spend two days prepping for presentations? Yes, you read that right.

Practice is one of the key steps to nailing your delivery.

You can practice by reading out loud in your quiet space. While you’re at it, make audio and video recordings and watch them repeatedly.

Ask your friends and colleagues to serve as a test audience and give feedback on your presentation.

This run-through will help ensure your presentation captures the main points within the allotted time. It will also help you maintain the correct body posture during your project presentation.

Make time to check if the equipment is working and get familiar with the settings and operations. This is especially important if you plan to use video or audio in your slides.

Start With a Strong Opening

Your audiences could have short attention spans, so make those first moments count. With solid openings, you can hook your audience and set the mood for a successful presentation.

Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford commencement speech at Stanford is an excellent example of having a solid opening. With over 4 million views on YouTube, it’s one of the most memorable and watched speeches in history.

powerpoint presentation work experience

Notice how he hooks the audience with powerful anecdotes about his life, beginning from dropping out of college. And then, he goes on to share the lessons he learned in his early days at Apple, losing his job in 1985 and reflections on death.

Here’s how to make an excellent opening speech that grabs the audience’s attention and convinces them you’re worth listening to:

  • Ask a question
  • Tell a compelling story
  • Share mind-blowing facts and statistics
  • Show captivating video and visuals that spark curiosity
  • Open your presentation with humor

Be sure to tailor your opening hook to your audience. To make this effective, it’d help to know about your audiences, including their likes, dislikes, cultural and ethical dispositions, etc.

If you want to learn more about making captivating presentation openings and more, read our guide on starting a presentation .

While presenting your project, focus on your audience’s needs. By doing this, you’ll build an emotional connection and drive action.

However, don’t go overboard. Be genuine and focus on getting the points across to them. This way, you’ll gain their trust and build excitement about your project.

Keep in mind that everything may not go as planned. It’s best to have backup materials and be flexible enough to make necessary adjustments. Preparing for unexpected events will give you more control over them.

End Your Presentation on a High Note

After you've delivered a fantastic presentation, make sure you wrap it up in a memorable way. Doing this will leave a lasting impression and nudge your audiences to take action.

One way to end your project presentation is to use a powerful call to action.

You can also tell memorable stories, summarize the main points and highlight compelling figures about the project.

For example you can mention some really intriguing figures like:

  • Expected growth rate, return on investment and profit margin
  • Potential company valuation in the next five to ten years.
  • Projected earnings and market position etc.

The goal is to hype your audiences and stimulate them to take action.

New Rules for Teamwork

  • Angus Dawson
  • Katy George

powerpoint presentation work experience

Not that long ago, teams were typically composed of people with similar skills working in the same place. Their efforts were based on the idea that by working together in a well-managed process, they could deliver replicable results.

Today, companies of all types are called on to demonstrate integrated, cross-functional, project-based teamwork in their operations.

New ideas about teamwork are emerging, some based on experience, some guided by new practices, some made up on the fly. But none of this has yet cohered into a systematic approach to improving how teams work.

In this article, the authors set out new principles of teamwork that focus on continuous, real-time testing, learning, analysis, adaptation, and improvement.

Collaboration is more complex than ever—and more difficult to get right. Here’s how organizations can build better teams.

Idea in Brief

The changing reality.

Traditional thinking about teamwork has often been based on intuition and observation. But that approach isn’t well suited to today’s workplace, which demands that teams adapt to constant change and disruption.

The Problem

New ideas are emerging, some based on experience, some guided by new practices, some made up on the fly. But none of this has yet cohered into a systematic approach to improving how teams work.

The Way Forward

The authors set out a new, systematic approach to teamwork that relies on continuous, real-time testing, learning, analysis, adaptation, and improvement.

Not that long ago, teams were typically composed of people with similar skills working in the same place. Their efforts were based on the idea that by working together in a well-managed process, they could deliver replicable results. They primarily operated with efficiency and effectiveness but would frequently encounter obstacles, such as internal siloes or bureaucratic processes, that hindered their overall performance. In response, they began to innovate how they worked together, establishing the groundwork for a more flexible, cross-functional approach to their rituals and practices. From the Skunk Works engineers of the 1950s to Brazilian football in the 1960s to the aviation and surgical collaborations that delivered stunning improvements in the 1990s and early 2000s, organizations have continually searched for ways to enhance their teams’ effectiveness.

And what to do about it

Ohio State students gain work experience through summer internships

Wheeler and wolstein program connects students with central ohio firms.

Students in a variety of majors gained practical work experience this summer by participating in the Wheeler and Wolstein Internship Program . The students made presentations highlighting the projects they worked on at central Ohio companies during an Aug. 9 event at The Ohio State University’s Student Entrepreneurs’ Center, home of the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship.

The program provides scholarship funding to undergraduate and graduate students in internships with startup companies and small businesses. Students are matched with organizations offering project-based internships throughout Ohio State’s summer term (May-August).

Students shared what they learned through the internship program.

The Wheeler and Wolstein Internship Program is funded by contributions from the late Tom Wheeler, an industrial engineer and Ohio State alumnus, and the Bert and Iris Wolstein Foundation.

“The dollars that they give go 100% to allowing students to have an internship that our startup companies and small businesses don’t have to pay for,” Turnbull said. “It’s a win-win for our companies and for our students. Students get a great experience, and the companies have access to this awesome talent.”

This summer, students interned at companies ranging from business incubators to real estate development companies to technology firms. Several of the host companies got their start through the Ohio State President’s Buckeye Accelerator program that helps students launch business ventures.

Information systems major Parker Haskett interned for one such company, ParaWave, which provides drone technology to first responders. Haskett said he gained valuable experience while managing the company’s social media and website. He also created a three-page leaflet detailing the company’s services for prospective clients.

“I made their new website from scratch using WordPress. … I did get to use my interest in website design,” Haskett said. “I was able to combine my knowledge of ParaWave into this three-pager.”

Radiologic sciences and therapy major Safa Mohamed oversaw customer relationship management operations for PointPro. The company assists businesses in assessing risks and managing assets.

“I gained exposure to the technology industry, which I hadn’t had before,” she said. “Working remotely caused me to manage my time very efficiently.”

Biomedical engineering major Hari Kasi interned for the Ohio Innovation Fund, a business incubator. He conducted market research and brainstormed growth strategies for various central Ohio companies.

Kasi said the internship complemented his personal interest in entrepreneurship. He is a co-founder of Almara, a startup that was one of the winning teams in this year’s President’s Buckeye Accelerator. The company aims to connect cancer patients with potentially life-saving clinical trials.

Kasi said his internship with the Ohio Innovation Fund culminated with a capstone project that enabled him to draw on his background in clinical research. He assisted life sciences and biomedical companies in coordinating clinical trials.

“Working really close with companies was amazing because you got to see how the team develops and see investment and how to keep fueling growth on their journey,” he said. “That really interested me to see how you can position yourself during the clinical trial stage to be successful.”

City and regional planning major Brady Foy interned with real estate firm Spire Development, working with the company’s team to analyze the current state of central Ohio’s real estate market and project future trends.

“I gained a lot of understanding of the real estate world,” he said. “I worked on the development side, I worked with property management, [completed] a lot of the bookkeeping stuff, which is something I’ve never even thought about. [I exchanged] a lot of emails with all different parts of the business. It was my first 9-to-5 experience.”

Shannon Bradley, the Keenan Center’s program coordinator for entrepreneurial programs and talent, encouraged the students to draw on their internship experiences when they enter the workforce.

“Every project that you worked on has a direct impact on the company,” she told the students. “I encourage you to tell that story to future employers. Make sure you’re showcasing what you’ve done.”

Students Impress in 2024 UREP Project Presentations

Libby Sullivan | May 14, 2024

Undergraduate student research continues to thrive at New York Tech, with the 30 College of Engineering and Computing Sciences students showcasing their projects on May 9 as part of the  Undergraduate Research and Entrepreneurship Program  (UREP) providing the most recent evidence.

Presenting their projects on topics ranging from developing green roofing systems for urban agriculture and using AI in dentistry to building robots to mitigate unsolved home invasions, studying the impact of flash floods on electric vehicles in New York City, and much more, the eight teams comprising students from both New York campuses highlighted the findings of their group research or entrepreneurship projects conducted under the guidance of faculty mentors. UREP provides each team with $500 to cover the cost of supplies and materials; the projects can run for a single semester or extend to multiple semesters for teams pursuing further development.

Since the spring of 2018, more than 300 students have participated in this program established by Associate Professor   Ziqian (Cecilia) Dong, Ph.D. , who welcomed faculty, staff, students, and other attendees to the seventh annual event.

Addressing the student participants, Dean  Babak D. Beheshti, Ph.D. , said, “All of you have had a chance to work closely with the College of Engineering and Computing Sciences faculty in an undergraduate research project, which is a really valuable experience for you personally and professionally, and an amazing thing to put on your résumé for whatever pursuit that you have in mind after graduation.”

Teams featured undergraduate students, ranging from first through fourth year, and from programs including computer science, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering. Most teams were co-ed. Presented projects included:

2024 UREP Projects and Teams

  • Comparative Study of Hydroponic Plant-Disease Detection Systems Team members: Joseann Boneo, Best Justus, Alysar Tabet Faculty mentor:  Houwei Cao, Ph.D.
  • Identifying Dental Cavities from X-Ray Images Using Cnn Team members: Sarah Allrozamo, Tanuza Abdin, Hannah Ocampo Faculty mentor:  Huanying (Helen) Gu, Ph.D.
  • Thermoacoustic Refrigeration Team members: Sheikh Ahmar, Jericho Lee, Ernesto Rosas Romero Faculty mentor:  James Scire, Ph.D.
  • Home Invasion Detection and Prevention Team members: Shan Caballes, Dani Gulino, D’ron Strapp, T’ron Strapp Faculty mentor: Kirti Mishra, Ph.D.
  • Level Crossing Analog to Digital Converter Representation Using Chebyshev Polynomials Team members: Pavan Kanakkassery, Emilio Santana-Ferro, Damian Sarjudas Faculty mentor:  N. Sertac Artan, Ph.D.
  • AI Detection in Creative Writing Team members: Elijah Ewers, Vighanesh Gaund, Cheuk Tung Ho, Wedad Mortada, Tanat Sahta   Faculty mentor:  Wenjia Li, Ph.D.
  • Interactive Visualization Tool for NYC Open Data Team members: Ali Elshehawi, Ali Khachab, Guang Wei Too, Alan Yuan Faculty mentor:  Ziqian (Cecilia) Dong, Ph.D.
  • A Study on the Current Effects of Flash Floods in NYC on Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Team members: Mekan Agahanov, Angily Ally, Isha Kaur, Ishaan Singh Faculty mentor: Ziqian (Cecilia) Dong, Ph.D.

Beheshti noted that the variety and depth of the projects speak to the hard work that the teams have put in. He recognized and thanked the faculty mentors and reiterated to the students the importance of this experience gained by “handling an open-ended problem, outside of your classroom, that you owned, and you managed to take from an idea to a concept” and beyond.

8 L.A. night hikes to escape the heat and experience awe

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

My coworkers and I were deep in conversation when we all gasped.

We’d crested a hill in Griffith Park, and rising just as we did up the hill was the strawberry moon.

The light red full moon rising over L.A. in June 2023.

All conversation ceased for a moment as we took in the view, the headlights of thousands of drivers on the 5 Freeway, twinkling street lamps and the orange glow from homes in nearby Atwater Village and beyond — and that moon, low in the sky, a reddish tint thanks to its proximity to the horizon.

That’s when I really fell in love with full moon hikes, standing there eating strawberry-flavored snacks with my giddy colleagues as we celebrated our luck of arriving at Five Points at the perfect moment.

Hiking during full moons, and sometimes just on a nice evening, is a semi-regular ritual of mine. Not only does it offer a different type of sensory experience than daytime treks — including croaking frogs, hooting owls and chirping crickets — but it’s also a more tolerable way to get outdoors during the hottest months of the year.

August’s full moon will be brightest and boldest on Monday. And if you can’t make it on exactly that evening, you can typically hike the night before or after a full moon and get a nice show.

Two dogs sit on a dirt path at night. A bright moon and city lights loom in the distance.

The first thing you need for an evening hike is hiking companions. Don’t get me wrong, I love a solo hike — just me, my dog and my satellite communicator out in the woods. But hiking at night alone isn’t something I would recommend, as many of our native wildlife — including mountain lions, bears and coyotes — are most active then.

The next thing to consider is what gear you’d like to bring. Sturdy hiking boots are helpful because if you trip or stumble, your ankles are more protected. A flashlight or headlamp is good to have, although some hiking groups discourage their usage, unless they come with the option to switch to a red tint, as our eyes are less affected by the longer wavelengths of red light. I like to bring a flashlight with a UV option because it not only saves your nighttime vision but also allows you to see (and avoid) scorpions, which glow under UV light.

As with any hike, you’ll want to check the weather and pack accordingly. My colleagues and I were up at Griffith Park on a particularly windy evening for a full moon hike and were glad we’d layered up. From there, you should bring whatever you usually need on a hike, like poles, snacks and water.

As for where to do a full-moon hike, there is no shortage of options. I look for urban hikes with wide paths to high points with panoramic views of L.A. County. Some hiking spots close at sunset, so you’ll want to check the times that trails are open. When parking, look for gates. You don’t want to come down from your hike to find a locked gate blocking in your car.

If you’d be more comfortable with a group, you’re in luck: There are many organized full moon and night hikes in L.A. County this time of year. I’ve rounded up some of them below:

  • The Eaton Canyon Nature Center Associates hosts a monthly moonlight walk, usually on Fridays closest to the full moon. You can join them at 6:45 p.m. Friday at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center. The hike leaves at 7 p.m. sharp so being on time is quite important. Learn more at ecnca.org .
  • The Sierra Club Angeles Chapter hosts its moonlight hike on Saturday, meaning the moon will be fairly bright for that outing. This is a moderately paced five(ish)-mile hike through Griffith Park. Sierra Club membership is not required. Arrive by 6:45 p.m. to sign liability waivers. The hike leaves at 7. You can learn more and register at meetup.com .
  • We Explore Earth, a nonprofit outdoors group, will host a free full moon hike from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday in Elysian Park. Participants can also partake in a 30-minute yoga session during the event and stargaze through telescopes that group leaders will bring on the hike. Register at eventbrite.com .
  • TreePeople, an L.A. nonprofit, will host a moonlight hike at Coldwater Canyon Park in Beverly Hills on Aug. 23. It costs $20 per person, kids under 15 cost $10. You can learn more and register at its website .
  • Vasquez Rocks Natural Area hosts a monthly twilight and early full moon hike. The hike is free but donations to the Vasquez Rocks Nature Center Associates are appreciated. August’s event is full (with more than 100 people on its waiting list), but September and October are open for registration.
  • For my Wilders near Riverside or San Bernardino (or for those wanting to explore a new place), the Wildlands Conservancy will host a night hike Saturday at its Oak Glen Preserve in Yucaipa. You can learn more and register here .

For those who feel nervous about hiking at night but still want to experience the glory of a summer night sky in person, try these options:

  • The Lancaster Museum of Art and History will host a one-mile astronomy-themed tour Saturday through the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve in Lancaster. Weather permitting, there might be telescopes available to gaze through. Register at eventbrite.com .
  • Orange County Parks will host a full moon nature journaling session Sunday in the gorgeous Black Star Canyon. Registration required. Sign up at letsgooutside.org .

I personally enjoy going to Griffith Park for full moon and evening hikes because it offers so many great views. I usually park near the merry go-round. From there, my friends and I usually head to either 5-Points (lower right corner of this map ), or Mt. Hollywood.

Lights from homes, streets and the city stretch out toward the night horizon.

Mt. Hollywood in Griffith Park remains my favorite — especially for a full moon hike. It offers panoramic views of L.A. County, and there are picnic tables where you can take a break before heading down.

That said, it’s a popular spot. My friend Laura and I hiked up to Mt. Hollywood one evening and sat quietly admiring the view, commenting on how remarkable it was that we were in a county of 10 million people, in the middle of the city, and yet we were mostly alone in this beautiful place.

Two human silhouettes against a rocky wall.

And then, we heard the thump of a bass. Dozens of hikers covered in glowing necklaces and bracelets emerged from the trail, dancing joyfully. Laura and I laughed really hard. They were such a fun group, I was tempted to ask how I could join. After all, a full moon over Los Angeles is something best appreciated with friends, new and old.

3 things to do

A wide Los Angeles Street filled with bikers.

1. Bike almost seven miles of car-free streets in Hollywood Walk, jog, bike, roller skate or skateboard along 6.6 miles of car-free streets Sunday as CicLAvia takes over the streets of Tinseltown for the nonprofit’s 54th event in L.A. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can traverse the route , which connects East Hollywood, Hollywood and West Hollywood. Visit any of the five hubs along the route for family-friendly activities, restrooms, free water refill stations and basic bike repair. There will also be plenty of spots to eat along the way. Please note that, although certain types of e-bikes are permitted, electric scooters and other nonpeople-powered vehicles are not allowed, outside of motorized wheelchairs and related vehicles for people with disabilities. Learn more at ciclavia.org .

2. Collect data on local wildlife in Harbor City Join jr. urban ecologist Ryan Kinzel from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park (25820 Vermont Ave.) in Harbor City for a so-called BioBlitz. At this L.A. City Recreation & Parks event, you’ll use the app iNaturalist to collect data on species that live around Machado Lake and the rest of the park. Organizers advise you bring sunscreen, water and a charged phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded. Learn more at the L.A. Parks’ Facebook page .

3. Take a free compass and map course in Fountain Valley Getting lost is any hiker’s nightmare. Sports Basement, an outdoor goods retailer, will host a free introductory course to using maps and navigation tools from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Participants will learn how a compass works and how to read topography maps and practice orienting a map and taking a bearing. Register at eventbrite.com .

The must-read

Half Dome at dusk in the distance from Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park

The death of 20-year-old Grace Rohloff while hiking Yosemite’s Half Dome has reignited debates about how to improve the safety of the iconic outdoors destination. The hike to Half Dome is 14 to 16 miles, and a permit is required to use the cables, installed in 1919, that visitors use to reach the top. You can read part of that debate in our letters to the editor this week. Connie Stewart of Santa Monica argues that National Park Service officials should permanently remove the cables, which are currently available seasonally . “Half Dome is dangerous. And that’s as it should be. National parks aren’t Disneyland; they are part of nature,” Stewart writes. Conversely, Bill Smart of Santa Barbara suggests that the problem lies in too many inexperienced hikers attempting to summit Half Dome. “Let the cables be. Screen permit applicants more carefully, as the danger lies with some of them, not the cables,” Smart writes.

Regardless of where you are adventuring, please be safe out there, friends. When in doubt, turn around. The mountains will be there next time you return.

Happy adventuring,

Bills DC Bobby Babich reflects on his first play-calling opportunity

  • Buffalo Bills | News, Scores, Schedules & Standings

The Buffalo Bills commenced their 2024 preseason slate this past Saturday in a contest that featured no shortage of players taking their first NFL snaps; in one instance, an individual was taking his first-ever reps in an organized football game .

There was also a first unfolding in the coaches' booth, as Buffalo defensive coordinator Bobby Babich called plays for the first time in the team’s 33-6 loss. The Bills promoted Babich, a long-time position coach within the organization, to defensive coordinator in the offseason to prevent him from being poached by one of several inquiring teams; head coach Sean McDermott has still not decided whether he or Babich will call defensive plays in the regular season, but he allowed the first-year coordinator to helm the unit in the preseason opener .

McDermott was generally complimentary of Babich’s first effort, telling reporters that he did a “really good job in a lot of areas” despite the scoreline. Babich himself reflected on his first go at play-calling on Wednesday morning, saying that he was generally pleased but that it was an overall learning experience.

Related: Bills DC touts under-the-radar CB as an example of what coaches ‘love to see’

“I thought it was good, but like I said, there’s some things that I look at that I’m like, ‘Okay, maybe I do this a little bit different, maybe I do this a little bit different,’” Babich said. “Bounce some things off of Sean, like I talk about all the time. I thought the operation piece went smooth as far as what we wanted to get accomplished, obviously there’s things that have to improve all the time. You learn every time you do something new. You learn something new, you learn something new, you learn something new.

“Thought it went well, there are a couple of things we wanted to accomplish as far as going into this game and getting certain things communicated [and] executed. I thought things went pretty smooth with some things that I can learn from and grow from.”

McDermott has yet to come to a final decision on this year’s defensive play-caller, but it looks as though he’d like to hand the responsibility over to his coordinator. He’ll have to make–-and announce—his decision sooner rather than later, as Buffalo kicks off its 2024 regular season on September 8.

FDA rejects MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD

The Food and Drug Administration declined to approve MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, drugmaker Lykos Therapeutics said Friday .

Experts and advocates say the decision is a minor setback in the growing movement to use psychedelics in the treatment of certain mental health conditions .

There had been intense political pressure on the FDA to approve the drug. Friday's decision was the first time the agency had considered a Schedule 1 psychedelic for medical use. If approved, it would have been the first new treatment for PTSD in more than two decades.

Lykos Therapeutics had asked the FDA to approve the drug as part of a treatment regimen, given alongside talk therapy.

The agency’s decision came after an independent advisory committee in June declined to recommend approval of the drug , saying there was not enough evidence that the therapy was safe and effective.

first MDMA treatment for PTSD.

The committee cited a myriad of concerns, including poorly designed studies, allegations of sexual misconduct during a midstage clinical trial and the potential for serious health risks after taking the drug, including heart problems and abuse.

A review by FDA scientists , published ahead of the June meeting, also raised concerns about how the trials were carried out, including that a number of patients and therapists likely were able to guess who was given the medication and who got the placebo.

Despite the rejection, experts say they expect that psychedelic therapies are still on their way to FDA approval. There are around four dozen MDMA trials in various stages of clinical development, according to ClinicalTrials.gov .

“I think it will be a temporary setback,” said Holly Fernandez Lynch, an associate professor of medical ethics at the University of Pennsylvania. “The advisory committee and FDA gave very clear indications of what they’re looking for in terms of study design and adverse event reporting, so Lykos and other companies should know pretty clearly how to proceed going forward if they want to get psychedelics approved.”

Psychedelic scrutiny

The agency’s rejection highlights the high level of examination and scrutiny psychedelics must withstand as advocates seek their approval for medical use in the U.S.

According to Lykos, the FDA asked the company to complete an additional phase 3 clinical trial to further study the safety and effectiveness of the drug. Lykos added that the agency expressed concerns similar to those raised during the advisory committee meeting in June. The drugmaker said it plans to ask the FDA to reconsider the decision.

“The FDA request for another study is deeply disappointing, not just for all those who dedicated their lives to this pioneering effort, but principally for the millions of Americans with PTSD, along with their loved ones, who have not seen any new treatment options in over two decades,” Lykos CEO Amy Emerson said in a release.

Food And Drug Administration Headquarters In Maryland

In a statement, an FDA spokesperson said the agency recognizes that there is a "great need" for additional treatment options for PTSD.Still, "as discussed at the advisory committee meeting, there are significant limitations to the data contained in the application that prevent the agency from concluding that this drug is safe and effective for the proposed indication," the spokesperson said.

About 13 million people in the U.S., many of whom are veterans, have PTSD, according to data shared by the FDA at the June meeting.

Talk therapy as well as antidepressants are the main treatments, but patients may not follow through with therapy, and less than a third report full remission of their symptoms from the medications, according to the FDA.

David Olson, director of the U.C. Davis Institute for Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics, said he doesn’t think the FDA decision will hinder the development of psychedelics for mental health disorders, including PTSD. He noted that a version of ketamine has already been approved by the FDA to treat treatment-resistant depression. That version, sold under the name Spravato, uses a modified drug called esketamine that does not produce the same dissociative and psychedelic effects as naturally occurring psychedelics.

Olson expects that there could be another psychedelic-based treatment for PTSD in the next five years.

“Psychedelics like psilocybin are demonstrating a lot of promise, and hopefully, the groups developing those compounds will learn from the mistakes of others and be more rigorous,” Olson wrote in an email.

He also noted that there is a new and emerging class of drugs called neuroplastogens that he said have been designed to retain the therapeutic effects of MDMA while minimizing side effects, such as hallucinations.

“All of this is to say that the future is very bright for this class of therapeutics,” he said.

Dr. Brian Barnett, a psychiatrist who heads psychedelic research at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, also said he thinks MDMA will be eventually approved for PTSD, despite the FDA’s decision.

“I think it will be another arrow in the quiver of psychiatry,” Barnett said. “We do have some good treatments for PTSD. They don’t work for everyone, though.”

He acknowledged the FDA and the advisory committee’s concerns, although he noted that some of the issues they raised about the trials are not unique to MDMA.

“The advisory committee was very focused on what was called functional blinding, where the participants were aware whether they got MDMA or not,” he said. “It was so surprising to me that they were so focused on that because functional blinding is a problem essentially for all pharmacological treatments in psychology.”

Pressure on the FDA

In July, nearly 800 veterans sent a letter asking President Joe Biden to consider MDMA for PTSD, saying that they are “confident” that the therapy will prove to be “amongst the most invaluable treatments ever developed to combat the veteran suicide epidemic.”

Politicians also weighed in.

Earlier this month, a bipartisan group of 80 lawmakers sent letters to Biden and FDA Commissioner Robert Califf urging them to consider approving the treatment, writing that “we cannot allow our veterans to continue to suffer in silence.”

Lynch, of the University of Pennsylvania, said she had been “dismayed to see politicians pressuring FDA” on the decision, adding that could harm future approvals for psychedelics.

Although the agency’s decisions can’t exclusively rest on the science and questions on safety and effectiveness do require some “judgment” calls, "when politicians interfere on behalf of specific products, it can reduce trust in FDA’s decisions,” she said.

The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a nonprofit group that evaluates the cost and effectiveness of drugs, has been critical of the development of the treatment, saying in a report published in late March that patients and providers in the trial treated psychedelics “more like a religious movement than like pharmaceutical products.”

In a statement following the FDA’s decision, ICER's chief medical officer Dr. David Rind said, “we hope that ongoing and future careful research will examine how to maximize the benefits and minimize the harms of adding MDMA to these and other psychotherapies.”
