An old issue in a new era: early years practitioners' perceptions of gender
Wingrave, Mary Ann (2014) An old issue in a new era: early years practitioners' perceptions of gender. Ed.D thesis, University of Glasgow.
This dissertation is an exploration of a group of Early Years Practitioners’ perceptions of gender. The current media and educational interest in the gendered brain suggests that children’s learning might be differentiated according to their sex. Based on assumed biological differences, approaches to the care and education of children could be established on sex categories rather than on an individual’s needs. My focus here is to explore understandings of gender to gain insight into how these might influence practitioners’ expectations of children’s behaviour and learning in the nursery environment. The study is premised on the belief that practitioners’ perceptions of gender could result in self-fulfilling prophecies being (re)produced and (re)created. Binary expectations could limit opportunities for children due to stereotypical assumptions and practices being employed. The dissertation adopts a Foucauldian lens to identify practices and perceptions that foreground children’s gender and sex categories and which do not reflect child-centred approaches. A number of themes permeate the dissertation, including the nature of gender, sexuality and play. The research data was collected from a group of eight Early Years Practitioners who took part in five discussion sessions as well as from a toy survey given to that group and a further 92 participants. The findings indicate that there is a belief among practitioners that gender impacts upon learning, behaviour and children’s play. In addition, there are clear indications that the participants believe children’s, especially boys’, early play behaviours predict their future sexual orientation. The conclusions presented suggest that changes to the education and training of Early Years Practitioners are required in order to raise awareness of gender issues in nurseries. I suggest that placing gender back on the training agenda with the use of Dewey’s critical thinking and Schon’s reflection-on-action may support changes to practice that could, in turn, provide children with more equitable teaching and learning experiences. Finally, areas for further research are proposed that investigate the perceptions of gender as understood by children and their parents.

A system that works for everyone, important notes:.
As a student of education looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing education theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.
The field of education is vast and interrelated with so many other academic disciplines. That is why creating an education dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.
We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic; it is the basis of your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.
This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in a cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.
While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best education dissertation topics that fulfils your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.
Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.
Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Take a look at some of our sample education dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.
How to Structure Your Education Dissertation

- Literature Review : This chapter presents relevant theories and frameworks by analysing published and unpublished literature available on the chosen research topic in light of research questions to be addressed. The purpose is to highlight and discuss the relative weaknesses and strengths of the selected research area while identifying any research gaps. A breakdown of the topic and key terms can positively impact your dissertation and your tutor.
- Methodology: The data collection and analysis methods and techniques employed by the researcher are presented in the Methodology chapter, which usually includes research design, research philosophy, research limitations, code of conduct, ethical consideration, data collection methods, and data analysis strategy .
- Findings and Analysis: The findings of the research are analysed in detail under the Findings and Analysis chapter. All key findings/results are outlined in this chapter without interpreting the data or drawing any conclusions. It can be useful to include graphs , charts, and tables in this chapter to identify meaningful trends and relationships.
- Discussion and Conclusion: The researcher presents his interpretation of the results in this chapter and states whether the research hypothesis has been verified or not. An essential aspect of this section is to establish the link between the results and evidence from the literature. Recommendations with regard to the implications of the findings and directions for the future may also be provided. Finally, a summary of the overall research, along with final judgments, opinions, and comments, must be included in the form of suggestions for improvement.
- References: Make sure to complete this in accordance with your University’s requirements
- Bibliography
- Appendices: Any additional information, diagrams, and graphs used to complete the dissertation but not part of the dissertation should be included in the Appendices chapter. Essentially, the purpose is to expand the information/data.

Top 50 Childhood Studies Dissertation Topic Ideas

- Dissertation
To define the meaning and scope of childhood studies, it is important to first understand the need for a formal discipline of academics in childhood study. The basic understanding behind the requirement for childhood studies as a specialized discipline of learning was put forth by academic thinkers in their study on “Overcoming developmental roadblocks” in 1997. The most rudimentary objective behind childhood studies is to understand the world from the perspective of a young mind. This can form the base for devising techniques and ideas in explaining concepts to young children. Childhood studies are, therefore, an extremely relevant discipline as it involves understanding the intricate elements of the early developmental phase.
What Do Childhood Studies Entail?
Childhood studies is a multifaceted field of study which includes within its purview the knowledge and perspective about all the different aspects of early childhood. The discipline also lays great emphasis on studying the journey of childhood from the viewpoint of a young impressionable child both historically and in the contemporary context. The discipline of childhood studies also encompasses learning about how different methods of empirical research can help in understanding the developmental milestones and patterns in children.
The subject is concerned with studying and determining the factors that influence the growth rate in children. Getting a broad understanding of these important concepts can help in devising effective techniques and strategies that can help children to demonstrate delayed growth and development. The discipline particularly focuses on the external factors that are responsible for slowing down growth and development. If you are a student of childhood studies and you have the liberty to choose your topic, we have put together a list of Top 50 Childhood Studies Dissertation Topic Ideas just for you:

Illingworth, Jessica (2021) Early-years practitioners’ views on the Covid-19 pandemic when considering the potential impact on children's personal, social, and emotional development (PSED) in England . (unpublished BA dissertation), University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth
This empirical dissertation is an exploration of the views of early-years practitioners on how the Covid-19 pandemic is potentially influencing children's personal, social and emotional development (PSED). Children's emotional wellbeing is a current global concern. The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that the UK government has had to introduce national restrictions on peoples movements and restrained the ability to mix outside the family household. Within the early year's foundation stage (EYFS), the national curriculum for early education, the key person's role is essential in supporting children's emotional wellbeing to build a strong foundation for children's personal social and emotional development (PSED). Early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings have experienced closures and restrictions to all children apart from children of key workers, including doctors, nurses, and Teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic. As the literature reports, this has led to many children experiencing a discontinuity of care, and concerns have been raised about children's emotional wellbeing. Drawing from attachment theory, this research explores why the key person approach is essential in supporting children experiencing the stressful events associated with the safety measures in place and continual changes of the pandemic. Through the use of a questionnaire, the research gathered the views of practising Early-years practitioners who continued to work in ECEC settings during the pandemic. The key findings detailed how practitioners supported relational attachments with children. They raised concerns about children's behavioural development but also recognised that some children’s PSED had developed during the pandemic as they had made new friends. The study concludes that the practitioners used multiple strategies to support children’s relational attachments, identifying that children were provided with a consistent, safe emotional environment to try and reduce the impact of the pandemic on their PSED.

Dear Annie: Oh no. My niece left step-cousins off the wedding guest list.
- Annie Lane Advice columnist
Dear Annie: My husband and I have been together for 15 years. He has three children from a previous marriage. In the early days of our relationship, my nieces would often come and visit during the summers, and all the kids would play together. As everyone grew older, the visits lessened to just holidays.
Now, one of my nieces is getting married. She invited my husband and me, and our two younger boys, but not the other three. I asked her if it was an oversight or if they were assumed in the family invitation. She told me that the four of them hadn’t really spoken in years, with my husband’s daughter ghosting her when she’s reached out. She also mentioned that because his daughter treats me poorly (she’s often rude and disrespectful — something my husband and I have been to therapy over), she doesn’t want that behavior at her wedding.
I mentioned this to my husband. He became very upset and thinks we should invite them anyway. He said his daughter has mental health issues and we just need to accept her behavior (this is why we are in therapy). I told him that my niece can choose who she wants to invite, and if there isn’t a relationship and her concerns of possible drama are valid, then she shouldn’t feel obligated to. Is my husband right? Should I ask my niece to reconsider?
— Blended Family Wedding Season
Dear Blended: This is a difficult situation, and I applaud that you are all in therapy to work on your relationships. If your niece just didn’t invite the daughter who was rude and disrespectful to you, then I would say you have to explain to her the consequences of her actions toward you. When you are rude or mean to others, you probably won’t get invited to events from people who love the one you are being mean to. However, she didn’t invite any of his children. That seems a bit exclusive and mean.
Dear Annie: I live in a condo complex, where we all own our individual condos. Recently, I redid my kitchen to include a dishwasher. My next-door neighbor, who is elderly, found out and asked if I wouldn’t mind putting a couple of dishes in with mine as she says that it is hard for her to stand at her sink and do them by hand.
She now wants me to come over and collect her dirty dishes, put them in my dishwasher and then return them to her. I feel guilty because she is elderly, but this has gotten completely out of control. How do I tell her no? Please help!
— Freeloading Neighbor
Dear Freeloading Neighbor: The reason she is taking advantage of your kindness is because you are kind. If you don’t politely stop her now, laundry might be next. Just know that having boundaries is not unkind, and let yourself off the hook.
