Assessment of Listening and Speaking, or ASL, is introduced as part of the curriculum for classes 11 and 12  in CBSE schools to evaluate students’ listening, speaking, and communication skills in the English language.

ASL enables students to be evaluated on a variety of abilities, including articulation, knowledge, grammar, comprehension of the question, and prompt response. Thus, it is critical to choose topics that students are familiar with, as this will aid in their preparation and provide time for them to practise and master the above-mentioned skills.

Listening Task

A series of questions will be asked to a student. Throughout the task, an audio clip will play. There will be four brief discussions in this clip about various topics such as the health benefits of chocolate, Indian tribes, and a trip to a particular location. Four distinct types of questions will be posed in response to these clips, one for each of the four discussions. The student must respond to all questions concurrently. The nature of the question now varies. They will, for instance, ask:

Speaking Task

The speaking test is used to see how well the student can speak. The student will be required to present a topic in this task. You must select one from a list of possible topics that your teacher will provide prior to conducting the ASL. To make this task, the students are put together in groups that aren’t chosen by the teacher. Both students then have to write a speech on one of the topics that their school gives them. The students can choose their own topic, depending on how their school does things. The two students will each give a speech on the topic they have chosen, and then the examiner will ask them some general questions about what they have learned. The answers that the students will give will be kept in a file.

ASL Test Overview

The ASL Test will help the students to measure their speaking and listening skills through various activities. Speaking and Listening are the basic forms of communication which you must excel at to become an efficient communicator. In this section, we have discussed about the ASL Test and everything you need to know about it.

Listening Test

Listening and being listened to is an important part of communication. In this test, the teacher examines the listening skills of the students. And in order to test this ability of a student, he or she is made to sit in an audiovisual enabled room where two audio clips are played before them. one of those audios is a speech and the other one is more like a conversation. Both the audios will be played twice before the student and after having listened to both the audios, the students will be made to answer some questions related to those audios only. The audios will be played in one go and will not be repeated more than twice or be paused in between, therefore it is extremely necessary for the student to be attentive throughout the audios. The student is then expected to answer all the questions correctly, however, there will be no negative marking for incorrect answers.

Speaking Test

The speaking test examines the speaking strength of the student. In this test, the teacher examines the students based on their Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Sentence Formation, Interaction, etc. For this test, the students are randomly paired. Both the students then have to prepare a speech on one of the topics that are given to them by the school or the students can choose the topic themselves depending on the procedure followed in their school. The two students will present their speech in turns on the topic they have chosen, after which they will be asked some general questions by the examiner. The answers that the students will give will be recorded. The two students can also question each other on the topics they have spoken.

Listening and speaking are equally important for effective communication. Hence, both tests are given equal importance by CBSE. Students must be taught from an early age that listening is as important as speaking because one cannot communicate the correct thing without understanding the opposite person’s issues. These tests are a stepping stone to a child’s better personality and future.

Instructions for Speaking Test:

  • The total time duration given to each student is 10 to 12 minutes (approx.)
  • There will be a single invigilator during the ASL
  • Invigilator must be a qualified English teacher

People coming out of theatres are often seen appreciating the acting skills & amazing cast of the movie. Have you ever seen someone appreciate the costume designer, editor, scriptwriter, or anyone who has worked more than the cast behind the camera? This is what women feel on a daily basis. After taking care of the house, and kids & even managing daily chores. They are not appreciated enough in our society. How can we expect to grow in a world where women are not involved in decision-making or given equality? Empowering our women has become more vital than ever. Women empowerment is not just about educating women or involving women in the decision-making process, women empowerment is about gender equality, accepting their thoughts & viewpoints, appreciating their efforts & decisions, and letting them make their own life decisions without forcing them.

Women’s empowerment can not be achieved in a day. It is a long chain of little efforts every day. The next thing you must be thinking about is what we students can do to bring this big change. In your neighbouring societies or nearest slums or even the girl child of your house can give you this opportunity. If those girls are not enrolled in schools, you can get them enrolled in your nearest educational facilities & teach them the benefits of education in life. You can also help them by donating books or clothes and by providing free tuition to help them in their studies. These are the little thing we can do together to help a girl in need. There is no greater gift than education and if we can empower a girl with our efforts, we should definitely help and bring a change in society.

The freedom to speak and express views & thoughts are different for men and women in our society. A man can speak up his mind, and make his own decisions in life whereas a woman has a limitation on her imagination as well. Women are not even allowed to imagine or aim higher in life because their role is only limited to cooking, cleaning & taking care of the family. In a world where a woman is dominated by society, it has become more vital to empower women. What exactly is women’s empowerment? When women are given authority to handle their personal, educational & professional lives, given equality in society, and the ability to raise their voice against violence, then they are truly empowered. We live in a country where gods that are worshipped are female idols but 1 out of 3 women have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in a lifetime.

Every human whether male or female should be treated equally at all levels, but women are treated otherwise. Sometimes due to cultural norms, women are not empowered. Like in India, the right to education is just for the boy child, the power to make a decision at home is for male members, whereas the women who spend all her life taking care of the family doesn’t even get a thankyou. Women will only be able to be empowered if they are not prohibited from accessing the opportunities. Educational Opportunity is one of the basic rights of every woman which also helps in women’s empowerment. If women are provided with proper educational facilities & encouraged to study more, their level of confidence will increase and they will also be aware of various topics around the world. We might be turning into a digital era but some parts of India are still living in different centuries because child marriage, female foeticide practices, and violence against women still exist. However as individuals, we have some responsibilities toward the women of our society. Appreciating the efforts that our mothers put at home, involving women in decision-making and allowing them to be whoever they want to. Women are not just limited to household chores. There are many examples of women who have achieved higher like Seema Kushwaha, poetry queens like Rupi Kaur, the Youngest CEO like Radhika Gupta, or ultimate pop star Beyonce. Women can achieve anything in the world, if they are given opportunity and considered an asset instead of a burden. Women just need a pair of wings & they can fly high on their own!

Even before dedicating her life to achieving Indian independence, she was active in the social movement for the abolition of child marriages and the Purdah (or Pardah) System. She believed that these two systems were the main barriers to women getting an education and worked tenaciously to get them abolished.

  • Julia Gillard’s “The Misogyny Speech”

When she was Prime Minister of Australia in 2012, Julia Gillard publicly embarrassed one of her political rivals for making sexist remarks about her. The so-called “Misogyny Speech” discussed the difficulties faced by women in the workplace and the ongoing battle against discrimination.

Further, keeping these vastly increased population even at a tolerably good standard of living, we need more and more of technology and science, more and more discipline and team-work, and consequently, more and more work in schools, colleges, factories and fields in fact, in every walk of life including offices. The fact is that this is our necessity, not merely for progress, but for sheer survival. “Developed” nations even today work harder than we do. With them, work methodical, systematic work, carried out punctually and without external compulsion is a habit, very much as sloth, casualness, unpunctuality, the tendency to work less and demand more, are’ deeply ingrained habits with us. That is why Nehru’s slogan of “Aram Haram Hai” is perhaps the central need of today.

Q. How can the habits of hard work be inculcated among children? A. People should be made to understand the disadvantages of being lazy and idle. If we talk about the children, they should be given age-appropriate responsibilities. Like maintaining their own belongings keeping their uniform ready, doing their homework etc. Timely supervision is also required.
