Ah! 2023 has dawned and it’s full of fresh possibilities and new opportunities for effective communication. Like boy scouts, BrightCarbon is always prepared. So, we asked our designers and presentation experts what they expect 2023 to bring for presentation design. Is it new year, new you? Or business as usual? The results are in!

The big hitters…

Accessibility

Improved accessibility came out on top, with 40% of our presentation designers naming it as a key area of development for presentations and presentation creation platforms in 2023. Both PowerPoint and Google Slides are regularly adding new features, making it easier for users to create more accessible presentations. So, we’re expecting increased use of alt text, better adherence to contrast guidelines , and an improved understanding of screen-reader compatibility. We’re also expecting to see more requests for presentation slides with room left at the bottom for live caption generation.

As presentations are usually mediated by a presenter, presentation accessibility is a fairly complex topic. If you’re creating your own decks, you might find this starter guide useful: 5 tips for more accessible presentations .

Interactivity

The silver medal goes to interactivity – predicted to be a trend by a third of our designers. Presenters wanting to have better conversations with their audience will lean on presentations with robust navigation to facilitate agile, non-linear paths through their content. Most importantly, with proper menus and navigation, everyone avoids the awkward spectacle of a presenter exiting Show Mode and scrolling through their slides to find what they need. The good news is that it’s pretty easy to add basic interactivity to your decks in PowerPoint and Google Slides .

Our presentation experts expect these interactive presentations to be large, modular decks designed to be broken up into smaller, more targeted presentations. These decks will empower presenters to have better, more flexible conversations. On the one hand, decks like these give salespeople the flexibility they need whilst protecting carefully crafted structure and messaging. Our final big hitter is doing diversity better. Our clients want their presentation design to reflect the diversity of their organisations in authentic and meaningful ways. So, we’re looking forward to celebrating diversity through imagery and illustrations, as well as through the stories we’re telling.

A specific focus we’re expecting for 2023 is an awareness of disability diversity. Poor disability representation can look like a token image of someone in a wheelchair – let’s leave this behind in 2022. Honourable mentions…

Though some things are returning to how they were pre-Covid, many won’t be the same again. One reversal we’re not expecting is a complete return to in-person presenting, so don’t delete your custom Zoom backgrounds just yet!

With more flexible working, asynchronous knowledge transfer is becoming more and more popular. We’re expecting an uptick in requests for self-running, scripted videos. Whether it’s talking-head videos or illustrative dynamic animations, videos with bold colours and diverse characters that your audience can enjoy when and where they like are going to be crowd-pleasers in 2023.

With in-person conferences ramping up again, we’re expecting the return of beautiful, bespoke decks developed for specific events. With presenters tackling unusual screen sizes and configurations, big audiences in big rooms, and online and offline attendees – getting a specialist in can really make a difference.

And, as we all pack our bags and jet off to network, BrightCarbon’s presentation design experts are expecting 2023 to bring more requests for one-pagers, leave behinds, and worksheets for in-person events with clear, engaging storytelling and visuals.

Are the robots taking over?

Like most of you, our presentation experts are keeping a beady eye on the robots – and by that we mean AI design. Though AI-generated art is still novel, images generated by AI following user prompts could allow presentation designers to create things that stand out from the generic stock photos others are using – they could even avoid some of the copyright implications of sourcing photos on Google. That said, there are ethical questions about AI generated art that we should be aware of. Will AI art help truly visualise meaning? Probably not. Will everyone be sick of it by the end of the year? Probably! Will everyone try it anyway? Yes, yes they will.

Beauty is in the eye… Presentation design trends for 2023

So, those are the key presentations trends we expect to see in 2023, but what about the design trends that will transform our slides from dull to dazzling this year? Here’s what our presentation design experts predict:

Clean, minimal design is going nowhere, so expect to see slides with plenty of white space, clear hierarchy, and minimal text on lots of corporate decks this year. However, where there is colour, it’s going to be bold and vibrant making these slides stand out from the crowd.
Gradients are here to stay. They’ve been popular in graphic design for a while and were gaining popularity in presentation design in 2022. A twist we’re expecting in 2023 is custom mesh gradients.
In 2023 presentation design, we’ll see less hand-drawn/doodly animations, but patterns and textures will be popular, replacing flat colours in backgrounds and vector illustrations.
The new year will bring a touch of nostalgia with it – our presentation designers predict grainy textures and serif fonts to make a comeback.

Designer Lakshmi Babu explains, “With dopamine dressing trending in the post-pandemic era, loud colors have become a favorite among designers and celebrities. The bright hot pink hue struck a chord because while it looks angry, it also helps one get out of the dull and gloomy times.”

Of course, pink doesn’t have to be insipid or stereotyped, and this new incarnation of ultra-pink is quite the opposite, instead loaded with a feminist statement and a loud-and-proud attitude. For graphic designers, bright pink can bring power and punch to a wide range of designs, and it embodies a punk attitude when teamed with jet black.

2023 may be remembered as the year that the Web3 bubble burst. Hype about the third iteration of the internet had reached a feverish pitch by early last year, though actual use cases remained limited. Yet amid the highest interest rates in three decades, as well as stubborn inflation, investors started to get cold feet about what is still a nebulous and nascent ecosystem underpinned by technology that many central banks do not trust.

Crunchbase data show that funding to Web3 startups — defined as those in the crypto and blockchain sectors — fell 74% on annual basis in 2023. Startups raised $7 billion in 1,564 deals, compared to $26.6 billion in 2,891 deals a year earlier.

In Asia, however, the situation is somewhat more optimistic, including in both China and India – even though those two countries have severely restricted the use of cryptocurrency.

Web3 With Chinese characteristics

Ever since blockchain technology became prominent, China has been interested in using it for a wide variety of applications, from trade finance to supply chain security. This interest in blockchain reflects the tech and science-forward thinking that prevails at the highest echelons of the Chinese state. However, the Chinese government is not interested in – and indeed opposes – the idea of using blockchain to facilitate privatization of the financial system. A key motivation behind this project is to build the GBA into a Web3 hub.

The proposal recommends that the Chinese authorities consider building a GBA-based financing platform for the blockchain and digital assets industry across the GBA connecting Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong.

Thriving Ecosystem In India

Like China, India has taken a dim view of decentralized digital currencies given the challenge they could pose to the central bank’s authority. When it comes to Web3, however, New Delhi has been relatively tolerant, which has allowed startups to grow unfettered.

The Indian Web3 venture-capital firm Hashed Emergent estimates that India has one of the largest Web3 ecosystems in the world with more than 1,000 startups. The sector received $250 million in funding in 2023. While that was a decline in terms of overall funding from 2022, the number of deals has stayed consistent. Further, funding has risen for startups in Web3 finance, entertainment, and infrastructure sub-segments.

Some interesting use cases for Web3 have emerged in India. For instance, the Maharashtra State Board of Skill Development (MSBSD) has issued 100,000 digital diplomas via blockchain, a a significant improvement in efficiency from the previous manual verification system. For its part, the Telangana (a state in southern India) government’s initiative with local farmers, supported by AlgoBharat, employs blockchain to promote sustainable agriculture. Meanwhile, the startup Dygnify is building a blockchain-based credit enablement and data traceability platform for businesses access to credit and global carbon markets.

Caution Is Warranted

While both China and India could potentially develop large Web3 ecosystems, it is unclear if their respective antipathy towards cryptocurrency could ultimately derail those efforts. While crypto is not synonymous with Web3, it is one of the essential building blocks for the third iteration of the internet.

Some observers have conflated Beijing’s interest in Web3 with its willingness to let Hong Kong experiment with cryptocurrency. These are two separate initiatives from the standpoint of the Chinese authorities, and there are not any plans to build a Web3 ecosystem on the mainland underpinned by crypto. The one country, two systems model on which Hong Kong’s governance is based must be kept in mind. Hong Kong, with its open, globally oriented financial system, might be suitable as a cryptocurrency hub, but the mainland – where significant capital controls remain in place – is bound to take a more conservative approach.

To be sure, Southeast Asia, where many countries are embracing digital assets in one form or another, offers potential for Web3. In September 2023, the Monetary Authority of Singapore announced a commitment of up to $150 million Singapore dollars over three years under the Financial Sector Technology and Innovation Scheme to “support innovative FinTech solutions arising from emerging technologies such as Web 3.0.”

At the same time, it might be instructive to keep in mind what Tesla Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted about the third iteration of the internet in Dec. 2021 as it remains relevant today. At the time, he wrote, “Has anyone seen Web3? I can’t find it.”

The plunge in Web3 investment in 2023 suggests that investors may have some of the same concerns, even if the crypto bear market is now in the rearview mirror. After all, while crypto is foundational to Web3, the inverse is not true. Digital assets and blockchain technology are here to stay, regardless if the Web3 concept endures.

Time will tell if Web3 has staying power like decentralized virtual currencies and the distributed ledger technology that underpins blockchain, or if it is more like the metaverse, a concept that generated a lot of hype when it emerged, but that is gradually atrophying because it is overly amorphous and does not solve any real business problem.
