Thesis Topics

You are invited to pursue any topic that falls under the English department’s purview, and the Honors Committee will assume that you will pursue it with scholarly rigor, intellectual seriousness, and artistic integrity. You should follow your own interests and commitments in defining your project, though you should avail yourself of the advice of those faculty members whose expertise will help you focus your ideas and give them depth. Again, we welcome critical, creative, interdisciplinary, mixed genre, and hybrid creative/critical projects. Most successful applicants have derived their projects from interests developed during their time as English majors at Georgetown. During the actual writing of the thesis, of course, you will work closely with a faculty mentor.

In addition, Honors students have written short story collections, memoirs, and collections of poetry. Students have also written hybrid creative/critical projects, such as a critique of postcolonial memoir within a postcolonial memoir. Those students who propose creative projects should have developed their skills through taking courses with the Georgetown English Department creative writing faculty or through participation in campus and professional journals and other creative venues.

A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical early steps in your writing process . It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding the specifics of your dissertation topic and showcasing its relevance to your field.

Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:

  • Your anticipated title
  • Your abstract
  • Your chapters (sometimes subdivided into further topics like literature review, research methods, avenues for future research, etc.)

In the final product, you can also provide a chapter outline for your readers. This is a short paragraph at the end of your introduction to inform readers about the organizational structure of your thesis or dissertation. This chapter outline is also known as a reading guide or summary outline.

Chapter outline example American English

It can be easy to fall into a pattern of overusing the same words or sentence constructions, which can make your work monotonous and repetitive for your readers. Consider utilizing some of the alternative constructions presented below.

Example 1: Passive construction

The passive voice is a common choice for outlines and overviews because the context makes it clear who is carrying out the action (e.g., you are conducting the research ). However, overuse of the passive voice can make your text vague and imprecise.

Example 2: IS-AV construction

You can also present your information using the “IS-AV” (inanimate subject with an active verb ) construction.

A chapter is an inanimate object, so it is not capable of taking an action itself (e.g., presenting or discussing). However, the meaning of the sentence is still easily understandable, so the IS-AV construction can be a good way to add variety to your text.

Example 3: The “I” construction

Another option is to use the “I” construction, which is often recommended by style manuals (e.g., APA Style and Chicago style ). However, depending on your field of study, this construction is not always considered professional or academic. Ask your supervisor if you’re not sure.

Example 4: Mix-and-match

To truly make the most of these options, consider mixing and matching the passive voice , IS-AV construction , and “I” construction .This can help the flow of your argument and improve the readability of your text.

Frequently Researched Topics in English Language Theses and Dissertations: Basis for Future Researches

Abstract Theses and dissertations take a resounding part in catering the needs of the learners in education. To be fully aware of the topics chosen is one of the eminent pointer to remember when conducting a research. This qualitative descriptive research reviewed the frequently investigated topics of the theses and dissertations of masters and doctoral students who were specializing in the field of language education in the graduate program of the School of Teacher Education, Saint Louis University (STE - SLU). The researches were treated according to the five (5) macro skills in the English language. It was found out that of the five (5) macro skills, speaking is the frequently investigated topic from 2011-2014 followed by reading, writing, listening, and viewing. It is then a challenge for the researchers to explore on the other areas of the macro skills especially viewing since there are no studies conducted yet in this skill. This study aimed to determine the performance of the grade 7 learners in five macro communication skills in English language learning at Cotabato City National High School-Main. Campus. Specifically, it determined their performance in listening focused on stress and intonation, speaking focused on correct production of vowel and consonant sounds and pitch levels, reading focused on comprehension and use of appropriate reading style, writing focused on writing purposes and sequencing sentences, and viewing focused on identifying meaning of signs and symbols and use of structural analysis. Finally, it determined the skills they performed best and worst. Thus, the subjects of this study were the 728 grade 7 students of CCNHS-Main Campus in the school year 2022-2023. Their performance in five macro communication skills were measured. The researcher used a quantitative descriptive design particularly teacher-made test in listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writing. The test questionnaire was based on the K-12 Curriculum Guide competencies which consisted of 50 test items for the five macro communication skills and divided it into 10 test items in each skill. Furthermore, after conducting the test, the results were analyzed and interpreted and came up with an output which is intervention materials in macro communication skills in English (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The intervention materials aims to help the grade 7 students in improving their communication skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. The findings revealed the following: the performance level of the grade 7 students in listening, speaking, and reading are all described as "did not meet expectations"; the grade 7 learners' performance in viewing skill is found to be in the "very satisfactory" level; in writing skill, the grade 7 learners' performance level is described as "fairly satisfactory"; their performance level in five macro communication skills is described as "fairly satisfactory"; and the learners perform best in viewing while they perform worst in reading. Based on the findings, it is concluded that the grade 7 learners are good viewers but they have very poor performance level in terms of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The following recommendations are offered based on the findings and conclusion: the language teachers should utilize different strategies and activities to help improve students' deficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing; there is a need for students to involve actively in interactive activities in school or watch English tutorial videos in speaking and listening to enhance their listening and speaking skills, likewise, they may also engage in writing tasks to eventually overcome their deficiency in writing and they may expose themselves in different reading texts or books in order to improve their reading comprehension level; the school administrators should provide opportunities for the students to develop and to enhance their communication skills through different events conducted inside and outside the school such as seminar-workshops, trainings, and academic festivals or contests; the intervention materials constructed as an output should be used by the language teachers to remediate learners' learning gaps; language teachers should integrate viewing English programs activity to enhance the students' speaking skill; the Department of Education and school administrators should intensify monitoring the efficient implementation of reading programs under DepEd and see to it that all schools implement it, teachers need to implement the reading program religiously; and future researchers may conduct further study about the students' English communication skills using different setting and respondents to validate the results of the study.

The efficacy of macro-linguistics in developing reading skills

Studies regarding reading skills have been carried out for a long time. However, the bond between linguistics and foreign language teaching, especially reading skills, has been frequently overlooked. Thus, this study which aims to emphasize the importance and need of linguistics offers an alternative way of dealing with reading texts. In this context, after reviewing the literature about some major fields of macro-linguistics such as, pragmatics, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics briefly, a relationship is established between the interdisciplinary areas listed above and foreign language teaching, mainly reading skills. The study is intended to help foreign language teachers to enrich their teaching reading experiences via keeping the core fields of macro-linguistics in mind. Thus, as an implication, an integrated lesson plan is developed in the study to demonstrate the efficacy of macro-linguistics in developing reading skills. Based upon the observations conducted, aforementioned plan highlights that the students are kept aware and motivated, reflect their experiences, have ideas about the register and intralingual and interlingual vernaculars of the language displayed in the text. The data is collected through student observations, performances and samples of their works. The results of the study indicated that foreign language students' comprehension levels of a reading text could be increased with the realization of macro-linguistics.

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is offered in all Faculties of the University. In the Faculty of Commerce, it is a research degree on an advanced topic under supervision. The examination is by thesis alone. The general rules for this degree are set out in Book 3 of this series entitled "General Rules and Policies". The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is also subject to the following Faculty rules:

A candidate who registers for the degree without submitting an approved research proposal is required to submit this approved research proposal to the Faculty Board by no later than six months from the date of first registration.   FDA2

If the Faculty Board approves the research proposal, the Board shall recommend the candidate for registration to the University’s Doctoral Degrees Board.

If the candidate fails to submit a research proposal by not later than six months from the date of first registration, or if the Faculty Board rejects the research proposal, the candidate’s registration shall be cancelled. 

A candidate registering for the first time for the degree may register at any time.

A returning candidate shall register by not later than 28 February each year.

The registration renewal is subject to a satisfactory annual report from the primary supervisor and relevant Head of Department approved by the Dean or Dean’s nominee. 

Except by the special permission of the Dean of Commerce, the thesis submitted for the degree shall not be less than 40,000 words or exceed 80,000 words.

PROCEDURES FOR ADMISSION INTO THE PhD in Economics (by Thesis)

  • A Masters degree in Economics is usually required.
  • Applicants should upload a 5-page proposal with their application. Check our staff page  for our academic's areas of interest. 
  • You must put in an application to the University as well. You can do this online at  http://applyonline.uct.ac.za/ . We encourage students to apply through the Commerce Faculty.
  • Your proposal will be distributed to the relevant lecturers within the School of Economics to match you with a suitable supervisor.
  • The Post-graduate Committee in the School of Economics will send recommendations for suitable candidates to the Faculty Board.
  • Subject to Faculty Board approval, the candidate may register with the university for this degree.
  • A candidate will be required to submit and present a formal research proposal to the Post-graduate Committee and Faculty Board for approval by no later than six months from the date of first registration.
  • If the proposal is not accepted, registration will be cancelled.
  • During the registration period, a candidate will normally be required to “attend the University” for a period of at least one year. By “attend at the University”, the Senate understands that the candidate shall, within reason, be readily available for discussion at the University.
  • For practical purposes, the PhD in Economics (by thesis) programme takes about 4 years to complete. The Doctoral Degrees Board (DDB) controls much of the process after registration, even though the School of Economics can call for seminars periodically. Students are generally required to be residents in Cape Town for at least one year.  The thesis submitted for the degree shall not exceed 80,000 words.
