The Past, Present and Future of Music in Education: a transdisciplinary framework designed to promote re-engagement and reform in music education for teachers, students and the community.

Profile image of Georgia Pike-Rowney

This thesis explores and analyses the discipline of music education by situating it within a transdisciplinary contextual framework. Its aim is to develop a simple, practical model to help teachers, particularly generalist classroom teachers, reflect on their own musicianship and that of their students and the community, as a means of increasing engagement in music both in school and beyond. It emerges from, and builds upon, the work of the Music Engagement Program at the Australian National University, where music is conceptualised in such a way as to increase the confidence and abilities of all teachers to offer music making opportunities to their students. Despite evidence to suggest that music making is a universal human trait, studies indicate a decline in active music making, particularly in countries such as Australia with ‘Western’ style school systems. There is evidence to suggest that aspects of music education may be contributing to this decline. The adults teaching music can be affected by negative feelings about their own musical capacities, perpetuating this lack of confidence in the next generation. Solutions to date have not produced reforms that successfully overcome these systemic problems on a large scale. This study develops through a set of nine ‘iterations’, each exploring a different realm of knowledge, some not commonly applied to the field of music education. Each iteration acts as a disciplinary ‘lens’ through which new data and perspectives are explored and considered, including: 1) language and etymology; 2) the conceptualisation of problems in current music education; 3) the origins of music; 4) thought and practice in ancient Greece and Rome; 5) the development of ancient performance spaces; 6) the influences of the early Christian church; 7) 20th century educational reformers; 8) the practice of the Music Engagement Program; and 9) the development of a framework in consultation with teachers. The framework that emerges through the iterative research process is refined through consultation with practising teachers in Iteration 9. The practical framework is designed to spark a process of reflection and debate amongst educators, articulating the different outcomes that stem from underlying educational beliefs at opposite ends of the spectrum. At one end of the spectrum is the belief that music is a specialised talent that requires specialist instruction. The outcome of this belief is that the bulk of the population disengages from, or lacks confidence in, their music making capacities. At the other end of the spectrum is the belief that music is a universal human impulse, which can be released and encouraged through education, but which is not reliant on specialised instruction. The outcome of this belief is that multiple pathways may be developed for and by each individual. The original contribution of this study is the provision of a historical and cultural framework of a scope that captures the extent of the influences converging on educators today, for use as a dialectical tool for debate, reflection and reform. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the ramifications of the framework for practice, research and policy.

Abstract We offer a multi-voiced performance autoethnography where contemporary music education practices are informed and imbued with the voices of teachers and learners. By dialogically and musically engaging with the very people who live, make music, and engage with learners in music classrooms, we promote contemporary qualitative forms of research and the (re)conception of a sociology of music education as a political and an ethical construction that needs to be grounded in serving communities of music practitioners. Through a pedagogical story, told from the perspectives of music teachers using their own voices, we begin an open conversation about the nature of power structures and struggles in music education research. We invite new possibilities in developing understandings of the complex socio-cultural dynamic of music making, music learning, music teaching, and music researching in all facets of contemporary society. By embracing a broader set of traditions—Arts-Based Educational Research and Creative Analytical Practices—that enable us to go beyond socio-cultural frameworks and orthodox beliefs that currently exist in the music education profession, we seek to (re)form a culturally contextualized, ethos-rooted, sociology of music education.

Although in an educator's life the time devoted to reflection is on average marginal, a balance between a reflective and active dimension, between theory and practice, can provide the teacher with a sense of coherence needed in his or her activity. Reflecting on one's own educational practice can in fact favour or radically change certain positions and beliefs and improve the relationship between the educator and the educational system. The fundamental question for an educational process to be effective is in fact that the teachers involved are fully aware and compatible with the premises of the system itself. A conceptual framework in which the functions and relationships in the educational process are highlighted is an important aid to reflection, to establish who we are, what we do where we want to go and how. In this process a prominent role is certainly that of culture, of which music is an essential part. In socio-cultural relations there is space for conflicts, ideologies and theories of all kinds that can be applied to the concept of what we usually call music education.

Peter Gouzouasis

"We offer a multi-voiced response to the (re)creation of a sociology of music education, where contemporary music education practices are informed and imbued with the voices of teachers and learners. By dialogically and musically engaging with the very people who live, make music, and engage with learners in music classrooms, we are pointing toward promoting contemporary qualitative forms of research and the (re)conception of a sociology of music education as a political and an ethical construction that needs to be grounded in serving the communities of music practitioners. Through a pedagogical story – told from the perspectives of music teachers using their own voices – we begin an open conversation about the nature of power structures and struggles in music education research, and invite new possibilities in developing understandings of the complex socio-cultural dynamic of music making, music learning, music teaching, and music researching in all facets of contemporary society. By embracing a broader set of traditions (i.e., Arts-Based Educational Research, Creative Analytical Practices) that enable us to go beyond socio-cultural frameworks and orthodox beliefs that currently exist in the music education profession, we seek to (re)form a culturally contextualized, ethos-rooted, sociology of music education. For this reason, our inquiry invites readers to consider the importance of including teachers as dialogic partners in writing and presenting music education research. We encourage and invite music makers and educators to use their own words and experiences toward self-expression and empowerment in writing research. In this paper, we begin to develop a teacher and learner centered sociosophy of music education, and evoke this new form of music education research as an alternative, creative pathway to expanding knowledge in the preparation of reflective-reflexive music teachers and music education researchers. This essay responds to five commentaries on Music Matters: A Philosophy of Music Education, 2nd edition (2015). Because each author provides a substantial discussion of different aspects of the book, this essay does not attempt to address all points. Instead, we reflect on selected aspects of each scholar’s critique.

This chapter reports on a European Comenius3 project, called meNet – a music education Network, in which there was a specific focus on music education in schools. The process for collecting information for music education in 20 different European countries will be explained to gain insight into specific issues related to each country. Some examples from current practice will be shown to support the existing situation. From the analysis of the collected data, it appears that music education in each European country might have some diversity in relation to the way it is put into practice based on contextual, cultural or circumstantial factors. In fact, what is considered good practice in a particular context might not be that good in another one and vice versa. It appears that music education in schools cannot be seen in isolation and is interrelated both with the quality of teacher training and with specific competencies relevant to lifelong learning. In that sense, it is necessary to interlink music education in the different systems and based on the socio-critical paradigm to rethink what music in present democratic societies should mean for children’s holistic education, as all European countries without exception assert, at least in a theoretical way.

In November, 2005 a landmark government report entitled the National Review of School Music Education was released. The report found that there was a great variability in the quality of music education in schools. It was acknowledged that although there are some excellent music programs in schools, there is “cycles of neglect and inequity” and greater support is required for teachers and the subject itself. The report acknowledged the influence of recent curriculum developments in Australia including integrating the arts into one subject. The paper will discuss issues arising from the report and how it has impacted music in Australian schools twelve months later.

The purpose of this study was to survey music education students in their first year of undergraduate studies to learn what influences and/or musical experiences affected their choice in selecting music education as their major. Participants ( N = 28) were enrolled in an Introduction to Music Education course at a mid-sized metropolitan university. Subjects were asked to complete a survey and rate perceived degree of influences on the selection of the music education major. Participants were also asked to provide written responses on personal influences that led them to select music education as a major. Survey results indicated that 89.3% of the students were most influenced by their high school music instructor in their decision to pursue music education. Other results show from all participants that previous experiences in music ensembles also had an influence on their decisions.

Integrated Article

Music Education in a Liquid Social World: The Nuances of Teaching with Students of Immigrant and Refugee Backgrounds

Gabriela Ocádiz Velázquez , The University of Western Ontario Follow

Doctor of Philosophy

Schmidt, Patrick

This integrated-article dissertation explores the multiple ways in which music teachers, community facilitators, and students engage in music teaching and learning in social contexts prone to change due to human mobility. Drawing upon Bauman’s sociological understanding of modern societies as liquid and the larger implications of processes of human mobility in schools and communities, this research focuses on exploring music education as it happens within an increasingly diversifying Canadian society.

In the first article, a philosophical research study, I conceptualize the notion of coping with discomfort as a form of response possibly experienced by music teachers. Here, I draw from psychological understandings of coping and a Foucauldian understanding of discomfort to view coping mechanisms as a form of pedagogy that may help or hinder music teachers in their responses to newcomer students in the music classroom. The second article, a multiple case study, uses and expands this framework to analyze the current pedagogies, reflective practices and adaptive processes experienced by two school music teachers working in highly diversifying school settings. The third article, an autoethnography, sets the investigative parameters of my own experiences teaching music at the Youth Music Program (YMP), a program of music education developed for newcomer children and youth in partnership with two community centres that provide settlement services in Canada. Finally, in the fourth article, I focus solely on the perspectives and experiences of newcomer youth and outline their understandings during and after their participation at the YMP.

The findings from all these articles draw attention to the nuances of individual perceptions, assumptions and preconceptions that guide actions. I emphasize the relevance of reflective practices in the processes of adaptation that may be experienced by music teachers and facilitators when engaging with the multiplicities of their students, and the importance of considering the particularities of developing more complex understandings of pedagogy and processes of reflection and adaptation.

Summary for Lay Audience

My research focuses on observing and providing understandings of what is currently happening in music education within diversifying Canadian communities. In four articles, I studied how music teachers, facilitators, and students interacted with one another through music education. I focused on studying schools and communities that were receiving large populations of immigrant and refugee backgrounds. Using the metaphor of water that is naturally fast-flowing and moving continuously, as in rivers, I explain how these communities have and continue to change.

In the first article, I viewed c oping as a psychological process that helps individuals act in particular ways, and discomfort as an emotion that may help individuals to interrogate their own thoughts and actions. I then established the concept of coping with discomfort, suggesting a process that may help music teachers to be more responsive to changes in population in their communities. In the second article, I analyzed how two music teachers reflected on their teaching practices, and what their adaptive processes were while they were working in schools with a highly diverse population. In the third article, I narrated my experiences teaching music with young newcomers at the Youth Music Program (YMP), a program implemented in two community centres that provide settlement services in Canada. Finally, in the fourth article, I studied the perspectives, experiences and understandings of the students who participated at the YMP. I explained and narrated how their experiences with immigration were relevant or not to music education and placed their musical learning as an example of adaptation.

Findings from these articles helped me suggest that thinking deeply about past and present events may support more intricate adaptive processes; that teachers and facilitators working in societies which are changing due to increasing immigration need to interrogate themselves about their perceptions, assumptions, and preconceptions to engage with newcomers in more meaningful ways, and that understanding how, for what end, and for whom they teach may bring about more complex understandings of what it means to teach, to reflect, and to adapt to societies that are continuously changing.

Master of Music in Composition

Hannah Azcuna

The Master of Music in Composition is offered in traditional and Low-Residency formats. The Low Residency modality of our Master of Music in Composition is designed to be an individually tailored composition lab to help composers further develop their composition and entrepreneurial skills so they can advance their portfolios and professional careers.

The Master of Music in Composition is designed to develop a personal voice as a composer through private instruction, supporting theory and analysis courses, fostering the entrepreneurship skills needed by the today’s professional composers, and providing a platform to experiment and try out new directions through our campus student ensembles, the IU South Bend Philharmonic, Choral Union, Wind Ensemble, as well as resident and professional ensembles such as the Euclid Quartet and Ensemble CONCEPT/21, dedicated to performing diverse musical output since 2000. We also offer readings to our students for their choral and chamber works.

With the Low Residency modality, the four-semester program is centered around the practical experiences of four-day residencies in South Bend, Indiana. Student  composers can work with professional performers to rehearse, perform, and record their portfolio compositions, attend and participate in masterclasses  and seminar presentations, as well as complete in-person work needed for certain courses. Besides these short residencies, the remaining work is done through online platforms, allowing participants to continue their professional careers no matter where they are.

Keyboard Proficiency

  • Final Project The keyboard examination is given at the end of each semester. Students who fail the examination must register in piano until the requirement is met.
  • Designed to ensure the student’s ability to use the piano as a tool within the framework of professional activities, the requirements vary according to level and area of music study. Students are to discuss specific requirements with their music advisors. Other examinations pertaining to specific degrees may be required as appropriate.

Final Project

The student must complete a final writing project prior to the graduate recital. This project may take one of three forms: a thesis, extended program notes, or a performance-lecture. Students must present a proposal for their project by October 1 for completion in the spring semester and by March 1 for completion in the fall semester. Proposals should include the student’s name, degree program, a working title for the project, a 1-2 page single-spaced narrative providing background and significance of the project, and the semester in which the project will be completed. An additional MUS-I 711 Masters Recital may be substituted for the final project.

Students choose one of the following three project options.

1. master's thesis.

The master’s thesis is an extended research paper on a subject in music history or music theory chosen in consultation with and under the direction of a member of the academic faculty. The thesis must present an original idea and argument that is supported by extensive research in a document generally 50-75 pages in length.

2. Extended Program Notes

With this option, the student will prepare extended, comprehensive program notes that address the repertoire chosen for the student’s graduate recital. The notes must be based on substantive research in order to provide contextualization and analysis for each piece on the program. This project has two parts: extended program notes for review by the advisor (approximately 15 pages) and condensed program notes for printing in the recital program (approximately 5 pages).

3. Lecture–Recital

The student will prepare a 45-60 minute performance lecture that will be given before the recital program. During the lecture, the student should provide the audience with historical contextualization and analysis of the pieces to be performed and demonstrate musical examples where appropriate.

Graduate Qualifying Examinations

Students must pass final examinations in music history, theory, and major area before the graduate recital. A student may attempt the examinations at any time during the degree program but must successfully complete each segment within a maximum of two attempts or be dismissed from the program.

  • Each oral examination will be about 50 minutes.
  • There will be a committee of three faculty members—including the studio teacher—and at least one academic faculty member.
  • Two questions will be asked four weeks prior to the oral examination. One question will relate specifically to the area of study, and one question will relate to the final writing project, with a focus on music history and music theory. The student will prepare a 15 minute answer for each question, with additional time allotted for follow-up.

Sample question | Composers often engage with political and social issues through their music. Choose two pieces, one choral and one symphonic, by two different American composers and compare and contrast the ways in which each addresses a specific contemporary problem. Be prepared to discuss and cite relevant scholarly literature.
