The majority of doctoral positions are structured under the TV-L (Tarifvertrag im Öffentlichen Dienst) salary scale, often falling within the TV-L 13 category, with a salary range spanning from €4,188 (Tier 1) to €6,037 (Tier 6).

Salaries are typically determined based on a wage agreement that specifies the contract tier (Stufe) and working hours (percentage-based). Many entry-level PhD students start with tier 1 contracts that are not full-time. For example, if your contract places you in Pay Group E-13 Tier 1 of the TV-L and you work at 75% capacity, your monthly gross salary will be €3,141.

Can I Work While Pursuing a PhD in Germany?

It’s generally allowed for PhD students in Germany to have part-time jobs to cover living expenses. However, the rules and expectations can vary depending on your supervisor, field of study, and specific circumstances.

While part-time work is an option, keep in mind that pursuing a PhD can be quite demanding, often requiring long hours of research and study. It’s essential to find the right balance between work and your academic commitments. Additionally, make sure to be aware of any legal and contractual obligations related to your employment while studying for your PhD.

What Is the Process for Defending a PhD Thesis in Germany?

In Germany, defending your PhD thesis involves several steps. You start by submitting your thesis and necessary documents, making sure they meet all the formal requirements. A commission is formed, and you may have the opportunity to suggest reviewers.

Then, you will have to prepare and undergo an oral defense, which can be either public or private and typically lasts between 30 minutes to 2 hours. During this, you present your research and discuss it with the committee.

The outcome of this discussion determines your final grade, which you receive after the defense. If everything goes well, you’re granted the Ph.D. title and have about two years to publish your dissertation.

PhD/Master's Application Process

If you are an international applicant to a PhD or Master's degree program, you have the same general requirements as all other applicants.

Note: Applicants to a non-degree program, including Exchange Scholars , Visiting Assistants in Research , and Visiting Students , should visit the relevant page for information about admission to those programs.

Bachelor's Degree or International Equivalent

All entering students must have earned a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent prior to enrolling at the Graduate School. You may submit an application before receiving your degree, or while your degree is still in progress, as long as the degree will be completed prior to matriculation.

Some countries grant an undergraduate or bachelor's-equivalent degree in three years. In such cases, completion of a three-year degree will meet the application requirement.

English Language Testing (TOEFL/IELTS)

TOEFL or IELTS is required of almost all applicants whose native language is not English.

If you have received (or will receive) an undergraduate degree from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction, you are exempt from the English Language Test requirement and are not required to submit the TOEFL or IELTS. You must have studied in residence at the undergraduate institution for at least three years to qualify. No exemptions are made on the basis of an advanced degree (e.g., MA/MS or PhD) from any institution. For more information, please see Standardized Test Requirements .

Although the Graduate School does not have test minimums for admission, individual departments may have a minimum requirement and will use these scores when they review your application. Please check with the department or program to which you are applying to see if it has a minimum requirement. The Graduate School requires incoming doctoral students who received a score of 25 or below on the TOEFL Speaking section or a 7.5 or below on the IELTS Speaking section to participate in a Summer English Language program at Yale in August prior to matriculation. These students are required to demonstrate English proficiency before they are permitted to teach.

Entry Term/Intake

All PhD and Master's students begin their studies at Yale in the fall term. No spring term entry is permitted. Application for admission to any of the Graduate School's programs begins in the summer or fall of the academic year prior to the one in which you propose to matriculate. Please submit your application by the program deadline .

Visa Questions and Processing

The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) serves as the immigration adviser for all entering international students and their accompanying family members. Beginning in March, OISS will contact you with the necessary visa and immigration information if you have accepted Yale's offer of admission.

GPA and GPA Conversion

You may self-report a GPA and GPA scale in the “Academic History” section of the application. Please do not convert or recalculate your GPA. If your college or university does not report or compute a GPA, you should omit it.

Translations

All academic records and letters of recommendation uploaded to your application must be in English or accompanied by an English translation.

While this guide covers the main questions that students might have around applying for a PhD in Canada, it is important to check the requirements for your university and ask the admissions team if you have any questions about the process.

Once you have decided to apply to a PhD programme in Canada, you can use degree databases to find which university offers PhDs in your area of interest, such as Universities Canada or provincial bodies such as Education Planner BC . Search engines or other global commercial degree directories may also help you identify a suitable programme.

Alternatively, you could search for which faculty members conduct research in your area via publication databases and then look up the universities where they teach.

If you already know which university you are most interested in, you should look at both its departmental/programme web pages and the pages of a central graduate school if applicable.

Unlike at undergraduate level, where you can apply via a central application system, application to graduate programmes is usually targeted to each programme, which can vary across institutions.

What qualifications do I need to apply for a PhD ?

We recommend that applicants check the admissions requirements for their programme of interest.

In terms of qualities admission committees may be looking for, these will vary by subject area – for example graduate programmes in natural sciences may look for different attributes from those in the performing arts.

Graduate students in Canada are usually expected to work independently and be self-directed. As such, applicants may want to provide evidence of how they have taken initiative and shown self-direction and perseverance. Passion, curiosity, focus, commitment, collegiality and enthusiasm are all qualities that applicants may find mentioned on programme websites.

How do I look for a PhD supervisor?

The first step would be to check with your programme of interest to see if contact with a supervisor is encouraged or required. Processes vary and some programmes assign you supervisors based on interests identified in your application, some require commitment from a supervisor prior to the application, and some may determine supervisors after some initial coursework or rotations.

If a programme requires you to contact potential supervisors, begin by researching faculty members and their research topics. Most universities, including the University of British Columbia (UBC), have a research supervisor database where prospective students can search faculty.

Candidates should read recent papers by potential supervisors and look for a good match between their own interests and those of the faculty member. Reading graduate student stories can also help, as applicants will be able to see current research projects students are working on, and get a sense of the faculty or programme they are looking into.

Once you have found a faculty member you would like to work with, you can reach out to them individually. Prospective students should be aware that academics often receive many such requests every week. Plan carefully who to contact and customise each message to the particular faculty member, explaining your research interests and why you are interested in working with them.

How should I write my research proposal?

Your research proposal is a crucial part of your application. It gives a sense of how prepared you are to conduct research and what directions of research you’re likely to pursue. A specific proposal is more likely to impress than some general ideas.

Your research areas and interests may change once you have entered your programme, so you will not be held to the ideas you’ve proposed. However, it gives prospective supervisors a sense of how your research aligns with theirs and that of the department in general.

Be sure to stay within the word count requested, and of course it’s essential you avoid any spelling or grammatical errors. We always recommend that applicants write several iterations of their research proposal and gain feedback from friends, colleagues and, if possible, professors at each stage. When you approach previous professors for a letter of reference, it’s worth sharing your proposal to get their feedback on it.

When should I start applying?

Applicants need to meet the application deadlines, which are often a year or more in advance of the desired start date (eg apply in December to start the following September). On top of that it is important to allocate enough time to prepare and complete various steps to be able to submit a completed application in time.

International applicants will need to ensure there is enough time to take the required English language tests. Applicants should also check if they have to complete any other courses before applying and that they have enough time to collect the necessary documentation and proofread everything.

We recommend that prospective students review application timelines for their programme of interest and then plan backwards, ensuring they have time to complete all aspects of the application. All the steps may take longer than expected, so give yourself extra time to compile the strongest possible application.

How long will the application process take?

This will depend on each university, programme and sometimes supervisor. Once you have applied, the process will probably take a further two to three months at least. At UBC, many graduate programmes close applications in December and January, with offers being made February to April as a rough guideline. Depending on subject area, applications can close as late as April or May for a September start though.

What supporting documents do I need as an international student?

In general, required supporting documents won’t be too different from those for a domestic applicant, with the exception being proof of English language ability. Examples of supporting documents could be:

Transcripts of all post-secondary courses/degrees previously enrolled in
Reference letters
Statement of interest/research statement
English language test scores
Depending on programme, test scores or portfolio

Many institutions allow applicants to apply with scans of their transcripts initially. However, once applicants receive an admission offer they will usually have to submit official copies, which may include translations for international applicants.

International applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with other details, such as study permit procedures, work opportunities and health insurance. While not required for the application itself, these are important considerations for which to plan and budget if the application is successful.

Do I have to pay for my PhD application?

Most universities in Canada will charge an application fee. At UBC, the application fee for international applicants is CAD$168.25. UBC automatically waives these fees for applicants from countries identified among the world’s 50 least developed nations. Other universities in Canada may have similar measures in place, so be sure to check this.

Other than application fees, students should make a financial plan that incorporates tuition and living costs, as well as checking what financial aid you could be eligible for and which scholarships are available for international students.

Deciding to go to graduate school is a big decision and often a difficult one if you do not have a clear understanding of what it will be like. It is important to go to graduate school for the right reasons, including:

Being interested in a given field.
Desiring to be part of an intellectual or professional community.

Acquiring expertise to change sector or professional area.
Gaining experience and entry requirements for an academic career.

Also, it is important to think about where you would like to study. Location and lifestyle can make a significant difference. Think about how this will affect your life, and importantly, is it a place where you could live in the future?

Regarding being successful in the process, preparation is key. Most universities provide a lot of information on their websites about the process and how to prepare strong applications. Make use of these resources, take the time to read the advice and treat the application itself as an opportunity to show that you possess key qualities faculty members are looking for, such as paying attention to detail, and writing ability.

General entry requirements for international students

At Sussex, our usual entry requirements for UK and international students are:

at least an upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate honours degree or equivalent international qualification
a Masters degree if you are applying for research degrees in the arts or social sciences, or an equivalent international qualification.

We may also consider professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing when making offers.

Specific entry requirements for international students

If you are an American student, federal regulations state that you must have a secondary school completion credential (high school diploma) or the recognized equivalent of a secondary school completion credential to be eligible to apply for Federal Student Aid. International Applicants

The Harvard International Office and the HGSE Office of Student Affairs provide extensive support for international students before they depart and once they arrive in Cambridge.

How to Apply

International applicants must submit all standard application materials outlined in the How to Apply section. Please see below for additional information regarding transcripts and standardized tests for Ed.L.D. and Ed.M. applicants.

Note: applications for the Ph.D. in Education must be submitted through the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, (GSAS). If you are applying for the Ph.D. in Education, please review the GSAS Application Information and Instructions for information about the Ph.D. application process.

Transcripts

Ed.L.D. and Ed.M. applicants are required to upload transcripts from each postsecondary institution attended in the Academics section of the application. If the institutions you attended do not provide official transcripts in English, you will need to obtain a certified English translation; students cannot translate their own transcripts.

All translations must be literal (i.e., word for word) and complete versions of the original records. You will upload your transcripts with their accompanying certified English translation as part of your application. All transcripts should show courses completed, grades received, duration of study, and degree or diploma received, if applicable.

Should you be offered admission to the Ed.L.D. or Ed.M. program, you will need to submit your official transcripts and supporting documents for verification through World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE), or SpanTran . These providers will send your verified transcripts and accompanying evaluation to HGSE directly; we do not accept evaluations sent by the student. Transcripts submitted for verification must include any additional coursework you have taken or degrees you have earned since submitting your application.

HGSE reserves the right to withdraw an admissions offer if there is a discrepancy between the uploaded version and the official original transcript and/or the official translation.

Standardized Tests

If your native language is not English, you are required to submit official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for Academic Purposes. However, y ou are exempt from this requirement if you have earned a bachelor's degree from an institution at which English was the sole language of instruction. Additionally, you must have completed at least 3 years of full-time enrollment at the institution, otherwise, TOEFL/IELTS scores are required.

We are currently accepting the academic TOEFL and IELTS tests, including the at-home or online versions of the TOEFL iBT.

Official TOEFL and IELT S scores are valid for a limited period of time. If you are applying for enrollment in the 2024-2025 academic year, the test must have been taken on or after January 1, 2022 . Please have the testing service send your official scores directly to HGSE. HGSE’s institution code is 3428 ; there is no department code. For the IELTS exam, an electronic score report must come from the test center where you took the exam directly to HGSE. IELTS does not prompt you for an institution or department code specific to HGSE.

For TOEFL , HGSE prefers applicants with scores of 104 or higher on the Internet-based TOEFL, with individual section scores (e.g., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of at least 26.
For IELTS , HGSE prefers applicants with scores of 7.5 or higher on the IELTS for Academic Purposes exam, with individual section scores (e.g., reading, writing, listening, and speaking) of at least 7.5.

Note: a major or concentration in English is not sufficient to waive the TOEFL/IELTS requirement. Additionally, completion of graduate-level degrees at an institution where the instruction is conducted in English does not exempt an applicant from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.

Once students have been admitted as degree candidates, Harvard University requires international students who need a Harvard-sponsored student visa to submit financial certification documentation that demonstrates adequate funding for one year of study. Detailed instructions regarding this process will be available upon admission to HGSE, and additional information regarding funding requirements for visa financial certification can be found on the HGSE Financial Aid website . Note: admitted international students requesting J-1 or F-1 visas are required to enroll on a full-time basis.

STEM-eligible Programs

The Learning Design, Innovation, and Technology (LDIT), Human Development and Education (HDE), and Education Policy and Analysis (EPA) Master’s in Education programs are all assigned STEM-eligible Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) codes. These are the only STEM-eligible programs at HGSE . All other HGSE programs have the general education designation CIP code.

For more information, including questions about what this means for visa and Optional Practical Training (OPT) purposes, please refer to the information available from the Harvard International Office .

Prospective students should apply to the program that aligns most closely with their academic and career objectives; the STEM-eligible CIP code should not be the deciding factor. Program changes after an offer of admissions are rare.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics , the number of doctoral degrees conferred increased 15% between 2009–10 and 2019–20 at private nonprofit institutions. So you have decided that you want to earn your Ph.D. abroad. With so many reputable graduate programs available in the United States, how do you choose which one is right for you?

The best way to narrow down your list is through a little advanced research that compares what you want in a program with what a program has to offer:

First, compile a list of what is important to you in a graduate program.
Include your interests, goals, desired areas of research, and the traits that are most important to you in a graduate degree environment.
Compare this list to the programs you are considering, and see how they match up.

Aside from research focus and program specifics, you should also consider degree funding. If you are looking for someone to help you pay for your doctorate through a grant, scholarship, fellowship, trust, or gift of some other kind, where and how much funding you are offered can play a big role in which program you choose.

Another way to narrow down your choices is to consider the following question: do the program/school’s graduates have careers that I would like to have?

Often, programs will disclose the jobs that their graduates accepted shortly after graduation as well as the careers they hold currently. This can be a good indicator of how well their degree and training prepared them to enter the field.

Here's what a strong ph.d. application looks like for international students.

Your application is a presentation of yourself on paper — your accomplishments, interests, research, and work experience. A strong Ph.D. applicant will meet all of the requirements for admission, and will demonstrate a unique determination to advance their chosen field of study.

Generally, international applications must submit an online application and application fee, transcripts, english proficiency test scores, GRE test scores and letters of recommendation.

Complete the online application (Make sure you answer all questions correctly)
A $75 application fee (collected online)
Copies of transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended or currently attending (confirm with your program if unofficial transcripts can be used during admissions review).
Three letters of recommendation
Proof of English language proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS scores ( Required for students applying from countries that do not meet SMU’s TOEFL exemption policy)
Official scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (check department requirements)
Video essay (Required for some Dedman College applicants)

English Language Proficiency Exam (TOEFL/IELTS)

The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL , and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) evaluate students’ proficiency in four areas of English language skills — reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

A TOEFL/IELTS score is required of all international applicants from countries where English is not the native language. Your test scores must be within the past two years of the application deadline; otherwise, you must retake the test. Why take IELTS/TOEFL?

English proficiency tests are important because they demonstrate your ability to function and learn within the English language, a necessary skill for all Ph.D. students in the U.S. IELTS and TOEFL are both widely used and trusted to be accurate. Due to the strict nature of both tests, you can be sure your score is an accurate representation of your understanding of English.

If you score well enough, it might also help you secure a teaching assistantship — and the funding that goes along with it. To serve as a teaching assistant while you earn your Ph.D., your school needs to know that you can accurately communicate the lessons and grade papers and assignments appropriately.

Beyond your academic goals, a good IELTS/TOEFL score can also help you secure a job. Whether you want to work for a multinational company, a government agency or in education, your score will help demonstrate to employers that you have a strong understanding of English.

Tips for Acing the IELTS/TOEFL

Here are six helpful tips for the IELTS/TOEFL

Know the test format Having a good grasp of the number of questions, sections, the length of the test, and the types of questions that will be asked will help you to feel more prepared going into the test. The fewer surprises the better, so spend some time learning about what will be on the test.
Create a study plan Name specific strategies for learning to speak, read, write, and listen in English. You can find many english proficiency test exercises online that will help you outline what and how to study.
Take as many practice tests as you possibly can Practice tests, especially ones published by the testing companies themselves, will help you familiarize yourself with the material.
Set a goal score Setting a goal will keep you motivated, focused, and will help you measure your progress throughout your time taking practice tests.
Enlist support Ask family, friends, tutors, and anyone else to help you practice your English language skills.
Retake the test Trying again is an option if you leave enough time to retake the test.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

Many graduate programs in the United States require students to submit official scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) . The GRE is a test that measures a student’s proficiency and skills in several areas, necessary for graduate education. The test focuses on three areas of competency: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. To succeed in taking the GRE, students should study the structure and scoring methodology of the test .

Students have the option to take the test on paper or online, and should choose the arrangement that works best for them. The test is offered in more than 160 countries, and is administered at 700 test centers around the world. Results can be sent electronically to the program of your choice (SMU’s code is 6660). Most graduate programs require applicants to take the GRE within five years of application.

However, check whether or not your program still requires the GRE . Some programs have opted to be test optional, but English language proficiency test scores are still required by all programs.

Video Essay — Dedman College Applicants Only

A video essay is required for certain Dedman College Ph.D. applicants. You are required to submit a video essay if:

You submitted a TOEFL/IELTS speaking score below 23 (TOEFL) or 6.5 (IELTS).
You are applying to the Statistics or Biostatistics PhD programs.

If you receive a higher score than those listed above, the video essay is optional.

Students should not be nervous about the video essay portion of the application . This is an opportunity for you to speak directly to your admissions committee via a recorded response about your passions and strengths. The best thing students can do to prepare for the video essay is to practice a lot, and to think about it like a job interview.

How does the video essay work?

Students will be asked to record their answer to just one question. Students can practice as many times as they want, but they are only allowed two chances to record their final answers. Students will be asked one randomized question from one of the following three categories:

Interest in SMU and/or their desired degree program
Personal characteristics, leadership skills, and activities
Academic and research experience

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts are accepted during the application phase for applicants applying to Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences or the Lyle School of Engineering. Upon admission to SMU, you will need to send official transcripts, certified and translated if from a foreign institution, directly from each school of higher education you attended. Applicants applying to the Meadows School of the Arts or Simmons School of Education and Human Development must provide official transcripts at the time of application.

Applicants must also provide a copy of their diploma in the original language and in English. The translation of these documents should effectively and accurately explain the title of the course from its native language, so the faculty can understand what it is.

Meadows School of the Arts and Simmons School of Education and Human Development also require transcript evaluations for international applicants. All foreign transcripts must be accompanied by a professional evaluation and an official transcript, including an English translation if it is not in English, and course descriptions or syllabi. Dedman College applicants must provide an official transcript evaluation if they hold a 3-year Bachelor’s degree in order to demonstrate equivalency of a 4-year U.S. Bachelor’s degree.

It is the student's responsibility to procure this evaluation and to assume financial responsibility for it. Because of the importance of this information, SMU only accepts evaluations from the following agencies of proven reliability:

The above services' evaluations should include an explanation that the institution is recognized by the ministry of education in the home country and is generally considered to offer at least the equivalent of U.S. higher education credit. In addition, it should include an explanation of the credits, the grading system and course levels, as well as a course-by-course evaluation.

The expertise and reliability of a professional evaluation report is recognized worldwide and is likely to be accepted by other academic institutions, employers and state licensing boards. However, the report is not binding to SMU and it will be considered a recommendation for SMU's independent decision of the credit to be given. Information and applications from the agencies are available online.

Letters of Recommendation

As part of your application, you will need to submit three letters of recommendation . When choosing the three individuals who will write your letters of recommendation, you should choose people who know you well and can speak specifically to your accomplishments. Unless you have specific and extensive work experience in your chosen field, the best recommendations for Ph.D. applicants are from academic references.

Be sure to provide them with all the materials they need to craft your letter, and plenty of time to submit it before the deadline.

Understanding fees, funding, taxes, and visas for international students.

Once admitted, international students must provide a Certification of Finance Form or Letter of Financial Backing as evidence of financial support. A Letter of Financial Backing may be signed by a parent or sponsor, but must be certified by a bank. These documents must be notarized and on file with the university to begin the process to obtain an I-20, as well as a visa and passport.

The cost to obtain a Ph.D. in the U.S. will vary depending on your school, program and whether or not you qualify for funding, like scholarships, grants and fellowships.

Funding Your Ph.D.

There are several different options for funding your Ph.D. degree as an international student in the U.S., the most common of which include:

fellowships
teaching and research assistantships
grants and scholarships

This section will briefly describe the differences between each, which funding sources are available for international students at SMU, and resources to help you find and apply for each type of funding.

Fellowships in the U.S. for International Students

Fellowships are gifts of money, offered by either the university or external benefactors, that are commonly given to students as a merit-based award. Fellowship funding can last anywhere from one year, to the whole duration of a student’s Ph.D. program. Fellowships are frequently used to sponsor a student and fund proposed research that will advance their specific area of study.

At SMU, tuition fellowships are available from the university, and are awarded on a competitive basis for both merit and need. If a program offers departmental funding, students are considered at time of application and do not need to fill out an additional fellowship application. Sometimes additional documentation is required, in which case the department will contact the student directly.

You can also research additional external fellowships through websites such as ProFellow and GoGrad .

Teaching and Research Assistantships

Teaching and research assistantships are available from the departments.

Teaching assistantships are positions in which students support department faculty members in their various courses. Some of these positions will involve work helping the professor prepare materials for the class, and in some cases graduate assistants you may be asked to teach the class yourself.

Research assistantships are similar, in that you will support a department faculty member in their lab and research while receiving compensation, but you will not be involved in classroom interactions.

Similarly to fellowships, they are awarded on a competitive basis for both merit and need, and students are considered for these opportunities at the time of their application. Assistantships cover a student’s tuition and fees and can, in addition, pay stipends for designated work in the departments.

Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are both gifts of free money from both private and public institutions that will not need to be paid back after you finish your Ph.D. These types of funds are usually earmarked for students from specific ethnicities, countries, or with particular skills or other qualifications. The best way to take advantage of grants and scholarships is to begin your research early and apply for as many as possible.

International students are not eligible for U.S. Government grants, but there are plenty of opportunities from private institutions — some even offer fully-funded scholarships or grants for international graduate students. You can find grants and scholarships specifically for international students on websites such as GreatCollegeDeals and CollegeScholarships.org .

Private loans are offered to international students through a variety of different institutions. Students can borrow up to the total amount of the cost of their education and education related expenses, after financial aid is applied, to be paid back to the institution with interest upon completion of your degree.

You will need to apply for these loans, which will include providing the lender with some financial information. International students applying for loans will often be required to have a creditworthy cosigner on the loan who is a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen permanent resident.

Websites such as International Student Loan and IEFA can help you find and compare loans, interest rates, and repayment plans.

Every international student is required to file a tax return if they were in the US during the previous calendar year. These need to be submitted by April 15th of each year. You must file a tax return (or in some circumstances Form 8843 ) to comply with a F-1 visa, even if you didn’t earn any money in the U.S..

If you received income in the US in the last calendar year, you will need to file both Form 8843 and most likely Form 1040NR-EZ . There are several options for completing your tax paperwork:

File online, by purchasing a tax code for an online program facilitated by the International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSS)
Fill out hard copies and mail them directly to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
Pay a professional to file them for you

Immigration Laws and Obtaining A Visa

International students will need to acquire several documents to legally study in the United States. At SMU, our Office of International Student and Scholar Services works with students directly to process their visa paperwork. The office will contact students directly through email, to help get paperwork in order and remind students if anything is still missing.

After being accepted by SMU, a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certified school , international students will begin the process of filling out your paperwork to study in the U.S.. Follow this easy step-by-step list will help ensure international students complete each necessary component.

How to Apply For A Student Visa to Study in the United States:

Your designated school official (DSO) will send you an I-20 to complete
Pay Your I-901 SEVIS Fee (make sure to keep your receipt — you will need it!)
Apply for a U.S. Visa (F-1 student visa status)
Arrive at U.S. Port of Entry (schedule arrival within 30 days of official program start date listed on your I-20)
Once international students arrive in the US, they will be met by a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officer. Be prepared to present the following:
Acceptance letter from your SEVP-certified school
Evidence of financial support
Name and telephone number of your DSO
Once international students have been admitted, they will receive a form I-94 , “Arrival and Departure Record”
International students must maintain their status as a fulltime student, until they have completed their chosen degree program

After one full year of study, international students are eligible to take an annual vacation. Students who wish to find part time employment must speak with their DSO first to ensure that they meet all the necessary requirements.

F-1 students should speak with their DSO if they are planning to do any of the following:

Change their major, program, or degree level.
Change their education level.
Transfer to a new school or take a leave of absence.
Take a break from school.
Travel outside the United States.
Move to a new address.
Request a program extension.

Dallas is a large, popular, and easily accessed city, which makes it easy to get to and from SMU.

There are two major airports in the Dallas area: Love Field and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport .
DART is the transportation system that gets you around Dallas and 12 surrounding cities. SMU participates in a DART Higher Education Pass Program . All enrolled students are eligible to receive a FREE annual DART transit pass.

The SMU Express and Museum Express shuttles are free to all students and do not require a DART Transit Pass to ride.

Tell us a little about where you are from and your educational background.

I am from the southern part of Brazil, from a city close to Florianópolis (which is the capital of the State of Santa Catarina). Even the capital is a small town compared to Dallas, the whole metropolitan area of Florianópolis has around 1 million inhabitants, so coming to a big city has been a big change! Regarding my educational background I received my bachelor’s degree in economics from the State University of Santa Catarina. Right after graduating, I enrolled in a master’s program in economics in the Federal University of Pernambuco.

What was your primary motivation for applying to an international graduate school?

There were two main reasons. The first one is that there were more options that would let me achieve a educational background with higher quality levels than what were available and feasible to me back home. And the second was to have the experience of living in a different country and being in contact with different cultures.

What made you choose SMU over other schools?

The deciding factor was being at a place that you felt welcome in. The team that did the recruitment in my PhD program did an amazing job with that. I already was inclined about choosing SMU, but the environment sealed the deal.

Was there anything you found challenging about applying to an international school?

Yes, for sure. The biggest hurdle was the language. I am not a native English speaker, so adapting and breaking the ice in conversations was difficult.

Is there any advice you would give an international student applying to SMU?

Start early and get you application package ready to go when you need it. The whole application process is already stressful enough without the pressure of not meeting the deadlines. Moreover, be in touch with the people that are on the other side of the application process, let your recruiters know about any question or concern that you may have.

Is there anything you have found difficult about attending an international school?

The language barrier was scary initially, but the community does a good job of making you feel safe and included!

What is one thing you would recommend doing in Dallas, to all international students attending SMU for the first time?

Not exactly in the city of Dallas, but close by there is the Fort Worth Stockyards, which gave me a little bit of the feeling of being in an old western movie. It was a great experience getting to know the area and checking out the longhorn bulls!

How to apply to doctoral programmes

3-16 April 2024 (only some doctoral programmes)
15-25 July 2024 (only graduates of University of Helsinki, only some doctoral programmes)
4-17 September 2024 (all doctoral programmes)
6-19 November 2024 (only some doctoral programmes)
8-21 January 2025 (only some doctoral programmes)
2-15 April 2025 (only some doctoral programmes)

Each admission period opens at 8 AM local Finnish time, and closes at 3 PM local Finnish time.

You must have completed a Finnish second-cycle (master’s) degree or a foreign degree that makes you eligible for doctoral education in the country where the degree was completed.

The University of Helsinki will verify your eligibility for doctoral education from the documents you have submitted .

You have to demonstrate your academic language proficiency in either Finnish, Swedish or English. To ensure you have the time to complete a language test, if necessary, familiarise yourself with the language requirements well in advance of applying.

You can demonstrate your language proficiency in any of the three languages regardless of the language in which you intend to write your doctoral thesis. The language in which you demonstrate your language proficiency will be recorded as the language of your degree.

Visit the doctoral programme websites to read their descriptions, teaching programmes and activities. Once you have found an interesting programme that matches your research topic and background, browse the research profiles of the programme’s supervisors.

If you already have a supervisor, you can also discuss your programme options with them.

Start looking for a supervisor well in advance, that is, months before the application round begins. Many doctoral programmes require that you have one or two supervisors at the time of submitting your application.

Check your programme's possible requirements for supervisors. Also note that some programmes require that you have a coordinating academic and a thesis committee already when applying.

The University of Helsinki’s Research Portal is a good starting point when looking for potential supervisors. The portal’s Research Units section contains faculty-specific lists of principal investigators.

Many research groups also have websites of their own where you can find out more about them.

Many doctoral programmes are multi- or cross-disciplinary, making it possible to pursue degrees awarded by a number of faculties. When applying, you have to state your target degree in your application.

If you fail to submit the documents as instructed and by the deadline, your application will no go to academic evaluation and will be rejected.

How to Apply PhD, International Education

This doctoral program prepares you to work in educational and cultural organizations that facilitate international exchanges and cross-cultural training. In this doctorate, you will develop a course of study that concentrates on a cultural area of the world – with an option to study abroad – and take course work in specialized research methods, globalization and educational policy, and international education.

We offer three concentration areas:

The Cross-Cultural Exchange and Training (CII) concentration prepares you to work in educational and cultural organizations that facilitate international exchanges and cross-cultural training.

The Global Education (GED) is ideal for doctoral students interested in work at colleges, universities, schools, publishing houses, and educational agencies that design, develop, and implement global education programs in international or multicultural settings.

In the International Development Education/Education, Peace, and Conflict Studies (COP) concentration, you’ll gain the skills for a career in government agencies, private voluntary organizations, and foundations that provide educational assistance to underdeveloped countries so they can achieve sustainable economic growth. You can also focus on educational emergencies in contexts that are affected by recent conflict.

On the online application you will select the International Education PhD program with the concentration you are interested in. Concentrations in Cross-Cultural Exchange and Training, Global Education, and International Development Education are available.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend one of the on-campus or online events to get to know program faculty, their research, and to look for alignment in research interests. Due to an overwhelming number of requests, and to keep our responses equitable, we do not schedule individual meetings with faculty and prospective students.

These instructions and requirements are for all applicants. If you are not a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States, please read the special instructions for international applicants .

Your application will require the following items. The following are acceptable document types for uploads: .pdf, .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, .tiff, .png, .doc, .docx, and bitmap.

1. Prepare Your Application

You are required to upload a copy of your most recent résumé or curriculum vitae as part of your application.

Statement of Purpose

You are required to upload a typed, double-spaced, two- to three-page statement explaining your purpose in undertaking graduate study in this particular program as part of your application. This is your opportunity to explain your research interests and how they connect to our program. Your research interests should be significant for scholarship and for the practice of international education and you should identify a primary mentor from among our core faculty.

Letters of Recommendation

Submit three letters of recommendation. Be sure to request them well in advance of the deadline. Read detailed instructions .

Writing Sample

As part of your application, you are required to submit an academic writing sample - a course paper or its equivalent - that demonstrates your writing and analytic abilities. Typically, these statements contain citations to academic works. The sample should be no more than 20 pages and does not need to display a knowledge of international education.

Transcripts

Upload one official copy of transcripts from every postsecondary school you have attended or are attending. Make sure to request them in advance of the deadline.

If you completed or are completing a degree at an institution outside of the US or Canada, you are required to provide a WES or ECE evaluation. Please review our requirements for translation and a course-by-course evaluation of your transcripts.

After you fill in and upload the required information, you can submit your completed application. Your application must be completed, dated, electronically signed, and submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST of the stated deadline.

Application Fee

You will be prompted to pay a $75 application fee, payable by major credit card only. After submitting your payment, you will see your application status change from “saved” to “submitted.” Please print this screen for your records, as it confirms that your application has been successfully sent to our school. If you have problems submitting your payment, please contact the Office of Graduate Admissions. Learn more about our fee waiver policy .

Mailing Additional Items

If any application materials need to be mailed to our office, mail the materials to NYU Steinhardt, Office of Graduate Admissions, 82 Washington Square East, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10003-6680. Please do not mail your materials in binders or folders. Any mailed materials must be received by, not postmarked by, the stated deadline . Only completed applications will be considered and reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Due to high volume, we are unable to confirm receipt of mailed materials.

Application Policies

Application deadlines are "in-office" deadlines, not postmark deadlines. It is your responsibility to ensure that all materials are in the Office of Graduate Admissions by the appropriate deadline, and we reserve the right to return any application that arrives after the deadline. Only completed applications will be considered. Should a deadline fall on a weekend, the in-office deadline will be the next business day. We advise you to apply early.

Please check the online system to confirm that you have successfully submitted your application. Due to the volume of applications and related materials received, the Office of Graduate Admissions will only contact you if your application was successfully submitted and is deemed incomplete because of missing required materials. Otherwise, you will hear from us when the admissions committee has made its decision.

Deferral policy: NYU Steinhardt does not allow deferrals. Applicants who wish to be considered for a future semester must reapply by submitting a new application with all supporting materials, including letters of recommendation, by the application deadline.

3. Receive Your Admission Decision

You will be notified about your decision by email. Typically, decisions will start going out in late March or early April for fall enrollment. You may learn of your decision before or after this timeline.

Once you have applied, you will need to send your transcripts and other required documents for the Liberty admission process.

Please keep in mind that transcript requirements differ depending on degree level . Liberty University admissions may also require additional documents. Visit your specific program admissions page to learn more.

How to Submit Admission Documents

Official High School Transcripts

Official High School transcripts are required for undergraduate programs. Students may be able to enroll in up to 12 credit hours with unofficial high school transcripts and our high school self-certification form .

If official high school transcripts are not received within those 12 credit hours, a hold will be placed on the account and additional registration will not be permitted until transcripts are received. The official high school transcript can be waived with 12 or more college credits from an accredited school with an acceptable GPA.

Official College Transcripts

Students can be accepted into most programs with unofficial transcripts, but official college transcripts must be submitted within 60 days of acceptance or before non-attendance drops for the first set of matriculated classes, whichever occurs first.

Please note: Unofficial transcripts can only be used for acceptance purposes when a transcript request form is also submitted.

You can fill out and submit the Transcript Request Form , and we will determine if we can request your official transcripts at no cost to you.

Official transcripts must either be mailed or submitted directly to Liberty University from your previous institution through an electronic official transcript system.

International Applicants

Applicants who have completed secondary education or college-level academic coursework outside of the U.S. must have their transcripts evaluated by a credential evaluation service provider that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services ( NACES )*.

Liberty University offers general admission for students who achieve one of the following minimum scores on a standardized test of English Proficiency.

Undergraduate:

Duolingo English test: 90**
TOEFL Essentials test: 7***
TOEFL (Internet Based Test or iBT): 61
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.0
Pearson Test of English (PTE): 51
International Test of English Proficiency Academic Plus (iTEP): 3.6

Graduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral:

Duolingo English test: 105
TOEFL (Internet Based Test or iBT): 80
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.5
International Test of English Proficiency Academic Plus (iTEP): 3.9

You may fax, email, or mail a copy of your unofficial course-by-course evaluation and transcripts. Official course-by-course evaluations with attached transcript(s) must either be mailed or submitted directly to Liberty University from your NACES-approved evaluator through an electronic official transcript system.

*International schools with U.S accreditation will not need an NACES evaluation.

**The School of Aeronautics requires a minimum Duolingo English test score of 105 for all undergraduate and graduate programs.

***The School of Aeronautics requires a minimum TOEFL Essentials test score of 8.5 for all undergraduate and graduate programs.

Get started setting up your financial aid by following the below steps and submitting the forms that apply to you.

As an accredited university, eligible students may use federal and private grants and aid. Make sure you have your FAFSA completed prior to class registration . Even if you intend to pay out-of-pocket through one of Liberty University’s interest-free payment plans, have military benefits, or have corporate tuition assistance, you may be eligible for additional benefits through financial aid.

It can take up to two weeks to process, so we recommend that you submit your FAFSA as soon as possible.

FAFSA Application

Use Liberty’s school code ( 010392 ). You must complete the FAFSA to be considered for financial aid. If you have more questions or concerns about the FAFSA, see more about the FAFSA .
