The Annual School Sports Day

Essay No. 01

“All work and no play makes jack a dull boy.” Therefore our school has made a very good arrangement for games and sports. Games are played daily. Sports are arranged every now and then. Every year annual sports are held.

The annual sports Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Students’ guardians and other persons are invited. Flags are pitched in the fields. Teachers and students are on duty. Teachers of  other schools are called to act as judges. Every sportsman wears a white banyan and a white shirt. A great man is invited to preside over the function. This year the District Magistrate was invited.

The Annual School Sports Day is celebrated in our school with great preparations. This day gives us a great pleasure. We are full of joy on that day. The 15 th December was our sports day this year.

As usual an interesting programme was made for the day. We got printed copies of the programme. The principal invited parents also. The senior P.T.I. was incharge of the whole show. The sports began exactly at 10 A.M.

First of all, the athletes taking part in different events, staged a march past. The Principal of the school took the salute. Then the sports began.

The first item was the races. There were 100 metres race, the 400 metres race and the 880 metres race and five kilometers race. The five kilometers race was a great fun. The hurdle race was also enjoyable. It was a great fun to see the boys running was also enjoyable. It was a great fun to see the boys running with their hands tied backward. It was a great fun when boys jumped to pluck an apple tied higher up. When they tried to find biscuit under flour, their faces were covered with flour.

Then began to slow cycle race, Ravi, my friend, won it. The three kilometers cycle race was worth seeing. Many cyclists took part in it. It was won by Raj Gupta.

After the races came the jumps- the long jumps, the high jumps and the pole jumps. These item were also very interesting.

Then came the item for strong and healthy boys- the shot put, the discus throw, and the javelin throw. I did not take part in these items.

Again we had the most interesting item. It was the weight. Lifting. Arun had won the junior championship in this item last year. He went into the arena. He had a muscular body. He lifted the weights with great ease.

We were waiting for the teacher’s race. All the teachers took part in it. It was won by our P.T.I. Shri Rana.

The sports finished at 5 P.M. The Principal requested the District Magistrate to give away the Prizes. The competitors stood in a semi – circle. They came one by one to take their prizes. The principal then thanked the District Magistrate. The school was closed for a day.

The prize distribution followed the sports. Arun was considered the best athlete of the school. The P.T.I. received his prize a little doll. Everybody congratulated him. After this, the students got packet of sweets each . we returned home happily.

Sports Day in My School

Every school celebrates its Sports Day and, to this all, the children very longingly look forward to. My school the St. Andrews Sr. Secondary School also has its Sports Day every year sometime in the month of November. The month of November is earmarked for the occasion, as, at this time, the weather is congenial for a long span of games on the field. When this day is about to come, there appears to be a lot of activity in the entire school premises as, arrangements take time. And so there is a lot of overtime beyond the scheduled hours of routine work.

Weeks before the Sports Day, children start giving their names for different events, and then, after the school hours, practices start. The children, who do not participate in any events, get other duties of the like of making relevant charts, making lists of games and participants etc. It is obvious that something is on for, at least for a fortnight before the event, studies are put as if on the hold, except of course for the STDs X and XII. The rest of the school is seen bustling with enjoyment and merriment for all enjoy such events. All the children, all the teachers and even all the other non-teaching staff seems to busy with some work or the other. This is because everyone yes, everyone is assigned a duty to see that the Day passes off well.

After a fortnight of being over busy with the preparations for the Sports Day, at last the day arrives. The lawns are so very meticulously done up, white chalk powder lines are installed for different events. Victory stands are beautifully done up to make the victors feel proud of being there after the events. All the children are so well groomed in their white uniforms that, it is a sight to watch and admire. To cap it all, the staff members are also very smartly dressed especially those involved with the different events they blend so well with the smart children that, the total effect is just smashing.

The day starts with the usual Assembly and then, all of us are instructed to go to our allotted places on the lawn, class wise. There are volunteers from the senior children who guide the smaller ones to their respective places and soon all is set as per the plan. As soon as all is settled, the Chief Guest arrives, and the Principal goes out to receive him/ her. The Chief Guest is taken to the dais and as soon as he/ she is settled, the Principal says a few words to introduce the guest to all, and requests him to say a few words and declare the Sports open. Now, the guest speaks usually on the importance of Sports and Sports Day, and declares the opening of the function. As soon as these two important speeches are over, the Chief Guest declares the Sports Day open, and there and then the events start.

One by one the events take place in a very well disciplined manner and the winners listed and made to stand on the Victory Stand and cheered by one and all. The games and Sports last for about two hours and then comes the most interesting moment of the function the moment of appreciating the winners by awarding them gifts and prizes, cups and shields. This is the ultimate moment of pleasure for winners when, amidst loud clapping and shouting of cheers, they get their rewards for their good work from the Chief Guest.

Even though I am not a very great enthusiast of games or sports, I just love this day and look forward to it through the year. I also make it a point to attend school on this day every year though I never participate. The thrill, the excitement, and then, the pleasure of winning are all moments worth seeing and enjoying. I love to see my friends and others participating with their hearts and souls with a complete involvement in the games. Their victory boosts up even my morale. Every year, after seeing this event, I decide that, I should also try to take part, but, the enthusiasm soon fades away as, I must admit that, I am not too keen a lover or fan of sports and games. I do love to watch it all but, I never feel the urge to participate.

When this day is about to come, there appears to be a lot of activity in the entire school premises as take lime. Avocado so there is a lot of overtime beyond the scheduled hours of routine work.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

All the children, all the teachers and even all the other non-teaching staff seems to busy with some work or the other. This is because everyone – yes, everyone is assigned a duty to see that the Day passes off well.

To cap it all, the staff members are also very smartly dressed specially those involved with the different events – they blend so well with the smart children that, the total effect is just smashing.

The Chief Guest is taken to the dais and as soon as he/ she are settled, the Principal says a few words to introduce the guest to all, and requests him to say a few words and declare the Sports open.

Now, the guest speaks usually on the importance of Sports and Sports Day, and declares the opening of the function. As soon as these two important speeches are over, the Chief Guest declares the Sports Day open, land there and then the events start.

One by one the events take place in a very well disciplined manner and the winners listed and made to stand on the Victory Stand and cheered by one and all.

The games and Sports last for about two hours and then comes the most interesting moment of the function – the moment of appreciating the winners by awarding them gifts and prizes, cups and shields.

This is the ultimate moment of pleasure for winners when, amidst loud clapping and shouting of cheers, they get their rewards for their good work – from the Chief Guest.

I do love to watch it all but; I never feel the urge to participate.

Essay on The School Sports Day

image_pdf

Our Annual School Sports Day fail normally in the month of May each year. It is not a very grand affair like some other schools, but it is about the grandest as far as our school is concerned, we have not considered a ‘premier’ school but we do what we can to make the Sports Day as memorable as can be. Sports Day is no different.

On the morning of the Sports Day, which is a Saturday, almost every student is involved in its preparation. The opening ceremony is due to start at 2 p.m. and there are many things to get ready before that. Many boys and girls are busy decorating their respective house booths so that they look as beautiful as possible. There is a prize for the best booth and each house (there are two of them) is set on winning the honor.

Some boy scouts are busy arranging chairs .in the pavilion just next ho the school- field. These chairs are for our guests of honor and the public who come to watch the events. The gardeners are busy decorating the pavilion with potted plants.

I help in polishing the challenge trophies and tying new ribbons onto them. Then with two more of my friends, we help the teacher-in-charge arrange the trophies and smaller medals. on a large table in front of the pavilion. They are to be presented to the winners later.

1:30 p.m. arrives and the school field is filled with students: The contingent of athletes stand ready in front of the pavilion. They are all dressed in white. The boys are in trousers and the girl’s skirts. Each of them has a colored sash across their chest to signify which house they belong to. It is quite a sight to see the flashes of fed, yellow, green and blue all neatly arranged in rows waiting for the opening ceremony to begin.

The other students wait at their booths. The guests wait at the pavilion. I wait at the prizes table with my two friends. We are dressed in our normal school uniform but we wear ties to smarten things up. It is hot wearing ties.

The monotonous music issuing from the four trumpet loudspeakers in the middle of the field suddenly ceases and a jagged voice announces the arrival of the Chairman of the School’s Board of Governors. All eyes turn to the group of people surrounding a big car at the entrance of the field.

Presently they walk to the pavilion and Sit down in the allocated places. Then the ubiquitous sound of ‘Colonel Boogie’s March’, more well-known as ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai fills the air and the contingent of athletes begin marching in tight formation.

They describe a pre-arranged pattern around the field and finally position themselves in front of the pavilion. The music stops and the Chairman gives a short speech after which he declares the Sports Day open.

Immediately after the opening ceremony, the events begin. The starter’s gun cracks many times to start the 100 m, 200 m, 400 rn, and other races. I myself have to take part in the 4 x 100 m for my house. I am not much of a runner, but they need someone to fill the team. Surprisingly we are second in the race. Well, second out of four competitors is not too bad.

I also help my teacher hand the prizes over to the VIP’s to present to the winners. Various people are called to give away prizes. They consist of people considered important by the school.

The events run off smoothly and at 4.30 p.m. we take a break for refreshments. After that, the remaining events are completed.

Six o’clock arrives and the closing ceremony begins with the contingent of tired but happy athletes marching around the field once again. It has been a great afternoon. The weather is wonderful, the spectators are Wonderful and everyone is happy. Finally, we gather around the prizes table in ordered formation while the Chairman’s wife gives away the challenge trophies. Shouts of approval and claps fill the air every time a winner is called.

After the last trophy is given away, the school captain leads the school n giving three cheers to the Chairman’s wife. As the roar of the cheers dies away, the murmur of contented voices is heard- as the people; students and guests alike, disperse and leave the field. It is indeed a memorable Sports Day.

School spending must be reconsidered as enrollments fall and reserves grow

New York State increased aid for Long Island’s public schools...

Gov. Kathy Hochul has introduced a new course for Long Island’s public schools: fiscal accountability.

Her proposal to end the “hold harmless” state policy which guarantees no school district will receive less state aid than it did a previous year sparked furious opposition among Long Island’s school districts.

Now it must spark a serious conversation about those school districts. School and district officials will say that a quality education costs an ever-increasing amount of money every year, even if student enrollment falls, schools are closed, and district buildings are sold. The argument not only defies logic but reveals these taxing authorities have virtually no oversight, accountability, or restraint.

Long Island school districts benefited from $854 million in federal pandemic aid meant to be an emergency infusion in the face of an unprecedented crisis. Now schools are citing the loss of that COVID funding as a reason for their insistence on increased state funding or, they warn, they will cut programs. Expecting endless COVID emergency funding is like a family relying on grandma’s inheritance each year.

Last year, New York State increased aid for Long Island’s public schools by $772 million to $4.8 billion for the 2023-24 school year. Yet, school tax bills for most districts increased. An annual state report found the reserves accumulated by Long Island 120-plus school districts had ballooned to $3 billion in 2022-23, roughly 20% of the schools’ projected spending; the state’s legal reserve limit for schools is 4%. LI’s school districts have amassed small fortunes on the backs of taxpayers in case of a “rainy day,” but when the COVID pandemic occurred, certainly Long Island’s rainiest day in history, these funds were not touched.

Also troubling: At a time when our region must address our decreasing school enrollment, attract a young and vibrant NextGen workforce, generate additional tax revenue, and increase affordability, many districts have objected to multifamily developments that would address these crucial challenges. The irony is that over time, their classrooms will continue to empty as young couples flee the region, shrinking the tax base and guaranteeing that school taxes increase as graduating classes decrease.

Hochul’s proposal has a simple message: We must create financial accountability and responsible governance among the school districts that represent 64% of our property tax bill. Schools must not be dependent on state or federal aid to preserve academic excellence. They ought to use excess reserve funds and find synergy savings with other districts.

Kings Park Schools Superintendent Timothy Eagen said Hochul’s proposal would cost the district $850,000 in state aid. Yet, according to the state Department of Education, Kings Park amassed $29.2 million in total reserves by the end of 2022-23, a 19.86% change since the prior year, and almost $4 million in unrestricted reserves. The facts don’t support the district’s rhetoric or its suggested balance sheet.

As a product of Long Island schools and father of two young children, I believe in the excellence of our region’s educational system. However, there is not a member of my generation who is not concerned about their school tax bill.

Hochul is forcing the region to face the crisis we’ve refused to acknowledge for decades. Everyone on Long Island wants good schools and low property taxes, but our current system makes it appear that we must choose one or the other. Long Island has the means to achieve both, and it starts with fiscal accountability for all.

What is Presidents Day and how is it celebrated? What to know about the federal holiday

Many will have a day off on monday in honor of presidents day. consumers may take advantage of retail sales that proliferate on the federal holiday, but here's what to know about the history of it..

essay school sports day

Presidents Day is fast approaching, which may signal to many a relaxing three-day weekend and plenty of holiday sales and bargains .

But next to Independence Day, there may not exist another American holiday that is quite so patriotic.

While Presidents Day has come to be a commemoration of all the nation's 46 chief executives, both past and present, it wasn't always so broad . When it first came into existence – long before it was even federally recognized – the holiday was meant to celebrate just one man: George Washington.

How has the day grown from a simple celebration of the birthday of the first president of the United States? And why are we seeing all these ads for car and furniture sales on TV?

Here's what to know about Presidents Day and how it came to be:

When is Presidents Day 2024?

This year, Presidents Day is on Monday, Feb. 19.

The holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of every February because of a bill signed into law in 1968 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Taking effect three years later, the Uniform Holiday Bill mandated that three holidays – Memorial Day, Presidents Day and Veterans Day – occur on Mondays to prevent midweek shutdowns and add long weekends to the federal calendar, according to Britannica .

Other holidays, including Labor Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day , were also established to be celebrated on Mondays when they were first observed.

However, Veterans Day was returned to Nov. 11 in 1978 and continues to be commemorated on that day.

What does Presidents Day commemorate?

Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington. In fact, the holiday was simply called Washington's Birthday, which is still how the federal government refers to it, the Department of State explains .

Following the death of the venerated American Revolution leader in 1799, Feb. 22, widely believed to be Washington's date of birth , became a perennial day of remembrance, according to History.com .

The day remained an unofficial observance for much of the 1800s until Sen. Stephen Wallace Dorsey of Arkansas proposed that it become a federal holiday. In 1879, President Rutherford B. Hayes signed it into law, according to History.com.

While initially being recognized only in Washington D.C., Washington's Birthday became a nationwide holiday in 1885. The first to celebrate the life of an individual American, Washington's Birthday was at the time one of only five federally-recognized holidays – the others being Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July.

However, most Americans today likely don't view the federal holiday as a commemoration of just one specific president. Presidents Day has since come to represent a day to recognize and celebrate all of the United States' commanders-in-chief, according to the U.S. Department of State .

When the Uniform Holiday Bill took effect in 1971, a provision was included to combine the celebration of Washington’s birthday with Abraham Lincoln's on Feb. 12, according to History.com. Because the new annual date always fell between Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays, Americans believed the day was intended to honor both presidents.

Interestingly, advertisers may have played a part in the shift to "Presidents Day."

Many businesses jumped at the opportunity to use the three-day weekend as a means to draw customers with Presidents Day sales and bargain at stores across the country, according to History.com.

How is the holiday celebrated?

Because Presidents Day is a federal holiday , most federal workers will have the day off .

Part of the reason Johnson made the day a uniform holiday was so Americans had a long weekend "to travel farther and see more of this beautiful land of ours," he wrote. As such, places like the Washington Monument in D.C. and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota – which bears the likenesses of Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt – are bound to attract plenty of tourists.

Similar to Independence Day, the holiday is also viewed as a patriotic celebration . As opposed to July, February might not be the best time for backyard barbecues and fireworks, but reenactments, parades and other ceremonies are sure to take place in cities across the U.S.

Presidential places abound across the U.S.

Opinions on current and recent presidents may leave Americans divided, but we apparently love our leaders of old enough to name a lot of places after them.

In 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau pulled information from its databases showcasing presidential geographic facts about the nation's cities and states.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the census data shows that as of 2020 , the U.S. is home to plenty of cities, counties and towns bearing presidential names. Specifically:

  • 94 places are named "Washington."
  • 72 places are named "Lincoln."
  • 67 places are named for Andrew Jackson, a controversial figure who owned slaves and forced thousands of Native Americans to march along the infamous Trail of Tears.

Oklahoma police say nonbinary teen’s death was not result of injuries from high school fight

essay school sports day

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A 16-year-old Oklahoma high school student who died a day after an altercation in a school restroom that may have been prompted by bullying over gender identity did not die as a result of injuries sustained in the fight, police said Wednesday.

Police in the suburban Tulsa community of Owasso are investigating the death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict, whose family said identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns.

Although the cause of death has not been determined, Owasso police said in a statement preliminary autopsy results indicate the teen did not die as a result of injuries sustained in the fight.

“At this time, any further comments on the cause of death are currently pending until toxicology results and other ancillary testing results are received,” the statement says.

Neither police nor school officials have said what led to the fight. But Benedict’s family says there had been harassment because of the teen’s nonbinary identity.

Police Lt. Nick Boatman said detectives are interviewing staff and students at the school to learn more about what happened.

Benedict was able to walk out of the bathroom after the Feb. 7 fight but was taken to a hospital by their family and sent home that night. The next day, paramedics were dispatched to the home for a medical emergency and took Benedict to a hospital emergency room, where they later died, police said.

Nex Benedict’s mother, Sue Benedict, told The Independent the teen suffered bruises all over their face and eyes after they and a transgender student got into a fight in a school restroom with three older girls.

“I didn’t know how bad it had gotten,” Sue Benedict told the outlet.

Malia Pila, Nex Benedict’s sister, described her sibling as a “wonderful child that impacted all of us in ways that are difficult to truly articulate in their importance.”

“We’re deeply, deeply sad about their passing,” she wrote in a text message Wednesday to The Associated Press.

Sue Benedict said in a statement on a GoFundMe page set up to help cover funeral expenses that the family was still learning to use the teen’s preferred name and pronouns.

“Please do not judge us as Nex was judged, please do not bully us for our ignorance on the subject,” she wrote. “Nex gave us that respect and we are sorry in our grief that we overlooked them.”

Boatman said investigators will forward the results of that probe to the local district attorney to determine what, if any, charges should be filed.

When asked if the students involved in the fight could be charged with a hate crime, Boatman said, “All crimes and charges will be on the table.”

School officials in Owasso, a suburb about 13 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of Tulsa, said in a statement a physical altercation occurred in a restroom and that students were in the restroom for less than two minutes before the fight was broken up by other students and a staff member.

After the fight, each of the students “walked under their own power to the assistant principal’s office and the nurse’s office,” and school officials recommended to the parent of one of the students involved that they visit a medical facility for further examination.

Police said they were not notified of the altercation until the student arrived at the hospital, and that a report was taken at that time.

Oklahoma’s Republican-led Legislature has passed several new laws targeting transgender and nonbinary people in recent years, including bills that prohibit children from receiving gender-affirming medical care and prohibiting the use of nonbinary gender markers on birth certificates.

Gov. Kevin Stitt also has signed bills that prohibit transgender girls and women from playing on female sports teams and prevent transgender children from using school bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity.

Stitt’s office released a statement Wednesday on behalf of the governor and his wife, Sarah.

“Sarah and I are saddened to learn of the death of Nex Benedict, and our hearts go out to Nex’s family, classmates, and the Owasso community,” he said. “The death of any child in an Oklahoma school is a tragedy — and bullies must be held accountable.”

Among the many anti-trans bills being considered this year in Oklahoma are measures to ban gender-affirming care for adults, prohibit school employees from using a student’s preferred pronouns if they don’t correspond with the sex assigned at birth and prohibit state laws or executive orders that recognize any gender besides male and female.

Oklahoma’s Superintendent of Public Schools, Ryan Walters, also has embraced anti-trans policies and faced bipartisan blowback after he appointed a right-wing social media influencer from New York known for posting anti-trans rhetoric to a state library panel. One of Chaya Raichik’s posts on her Libs of TikTok account on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, last year showing an edited video critical of a public school librarian in Tulsa led to several consecutive days of bomb threats to schools in the district.

“Policies that discriminate and hateful rhetoric spewed by state officials against transgender youth make our schools less safe and deny youth like Nex the future they deserve,” ACLU Oklahoma said in a statement.

In a statement Wednesday, Walters said he mourned the loss of the Owasso student and that he would “pray for God’s comfort for the family and the entire Owasso community.”

Boys basketball: North Jersey highlights from Day 1 of the state tournament

essay school sports day

RIDGEWOOD – Evan O’Reilly got way more aggressive in the final quarter and Ridgewood desperately needed it.

O’Reilly scored nine of his game-high 21 points in the fourth and top-seeded Ridgewood pulled away late for a 57-43 victory over No. 16 Bergen Tech in Wednesday night’s North 1, Group 4 boys basketball opening round.

The senior swingman stroked an NBA-distance 3-pointer from the left wing with a hand in his face – a hero-or-goat moment - to give Ridgewood some significant breathing room in the fourth with a 47-40 lead. He answered a Bergen Tech 3-pointer with a jumper in the lane for a 51-43 lead.

“I think some of those shots were what we needed to win,” said O’Reilly, who has 997 career points. “I wasn’t going to do something crazy, but I want to win, and we all want to win, and we were going to make the right plays to do so.”

Juniors Johnny Jackson (16 points) and Jake Roth also made big baskets in the fourth for Ridgewood (18-8). Jackson hit a 3-pointer from the left wing for a 43-37 lead. Roth parlayed a layup into a three-point play to give the Maroons their first double-digit lead, 55-43.

Bergen Tech (9-18) showed tremendous poise and patience for 28 minutes and might be the best 16 th seed in the state. Sophomore Dean Aminyar scored 13, including six in the third as the Knights turned a 22-17 halftime deficit into a 37-36 lead. Seniors Miguel Manalang and Raj Malhotra each hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third.

It was clear from Ridgewood’s first two possessions of the fourth that O’Reilly was going to force the action. He drove, drew a foul, and made two free throws to put Ridgewood ahead for good, 38-37. In transition, he hit a pull-up 15-footer from the foul line to extend the lead to 40-37 and trigger a Bergen Tech timeout with 7:27 remaining.

“I’m happy that we went through some adversity there, and were able to fight through it, but not a great opening from an offensive and defensive standpoint,” said Ridgewood coach Mike Troy, whose team hosts No. 9 Montclair on Monday in the quarterfinals. “Lazy mistakes and I’m hoping that we can clean that up.”

Clifton does it again

Clifton, the 15 th seed, knocked off No. 2 Eastside for the second time this season, 53-51. Senior Saif Saleh, who last week surpassed 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, had 11 points and 18 boards as Clifton (12-16) split four games against its Big North Liberty Division rival. Senior Gabe Cruz added 15 points and senior Alex Franco 13 for the Mustangs. Sophomore Caleb Williams scored 19 for Eastside (18-9).
