I am busy sending invitation cards, arranging games and decorating the drawing room, on my birthday. I have left certain things entirely to my sister. For example, it is for her to decorate the cards and write addresses in a very beautiful handwriting. She also invites her friends to join the party. My father has a very different notion about the celebration of my birthday. Last year, he had taken me to an orphanage and had made me contribute money to their welfare fund. This year, he intends to take me to the school for the blind.

My friends start arriving around 5 p.m. I welcome each one of them with warmth and make them sit comfortably in the drawing room that is beautifully decorated. They bring gifts for me, nicely packed in coloured wrappers. My uncle who lives abroad sends me a nice set of pens or a pair of nice jeans. This year again, I hope to get something wonderful from him.

When all the friends have come, my mother brings the cake to the drawing-room. The candles are lit on it. As my friends sing “Happy Birthday,” I blow out the candles and use a knife to carve out small pieces of the cake. Everyone wishes me a prosperous future. Some snacks are also served. The gifts are piled up in one corner and we all get ready to play the games. Every game seems to be full of fun. They all roar with laughter.

I woke up very early on my birthday because I had to dress up in casual clothes for school . The day before, all my candies were ready that I would distribute in the classroom.

My mother prepared my favourite breakfast and gave me a big chocolate bar for lunch as well. I went to school and the whole class sang for me and congratulated me. It was the turn to distribute sweets.

My best friend and I went to all the teachers to distribute toffees and we had a great time there. Moreover, it was an incredible feeling. My friends were all singing for me and eager to come to my birthday party later in the evening.

My birthday falls on 17th of June every year. My family gets more excited for my birthday than me. On my birthday, my parents invite everyone to our house.

Every year, my siblings plan a surprise theme party for me. Last year, it was a Halloween theme party. They all plan this secretly without even giving me any hints.

At 12 o’clock, everyone comes to my room bringing my favorite chocolate cake. I make a wish, blow the candles and then cut the cake. In the evening, everyone gets dressed for the actual party.

My family invites all my friends and teachers too. I welcome everyone and make them sit in my lounge that is beautifully decorated by my siblings.

Everyone is so happy on that day. All my friends and relatives bring gifts for me that are nicely packed in colored wrappers. My siblings pile up all my gifts in one corner and then we get ready to play games.

My father becomes the referee of all games. We play musical chairs, Pictionary, dumb charades and many other fun games.

My dad also calls magicians and joker to add more colors to my party. The magician shows us several tricks. Everyone enjoys so much.

When everyone has finally arrived, my dad brings the cake. He knows that I love chocolate cakes so he always brings delicious chocolate cakes for me.

Everyone sings “happy birthday” as I blow the candles and cut cake. Everyone hugs and wishes me a bright future. My mom prepares delicious meals for everyone.

The guests are served with cake pieces, juices, snacks and sweets. Everyone enjoys the food very much. I also have a lot of fun in eating and chatting with my friends.

As it gets dark, everyone starts to leave. My parents distribute toffees and chocolates among my friends and relatives.

On every birthday, my father has a habit of taking me with him to charity home too. My father has always taught me to remember poor people in our special days.

So, on my every birthday, I go with my dad to charity homes to share sweets and gifts with them. The happiness that I feel after giving them gifts and seeing their smile is an indescribable feeling. It feels very nice when people to whom we distribute gifts, give us blessings.

At night, I open gifts with my siblings. My favorite gift is the teddy bear which was gifted by my mom last year. I sleep with it every night. I am so proud to have such an amazing family in my life who celebrates my birthday with so much excitement.

I chose my birthday cake and my father ordered the same for me. My birthday cake was really beautifully escorted and came with sparkled candles too. And my birthday party was full of fun all my dear ones enjoyed a lot and they blessed me a lot on my special day.

I helped my mother for making the cake. I helped her in baking too as mango is my favorite fruit my mom baked it for me. The way she baked it I loved seeing her love towards me.

I helped her by mixing the ingredients well. Also, I helped her in baking the cake as she took it out from the oven. I also helped my mother in garnishing the cake with jam and chocolate syrup.

The birthday cake by my mother had my name over it. She wrote my hero as she calls me with that name. My parents have done a lot for making my birthday very special for me.

So my 7th birthday was special to me as it brings everyone so close and we really enjoy ourselves a lot. I blew candles on the cake and then cut the cake.

The birthday cake is a really necessary part of my birthday. My birthday cake was eye candy and the taste of it was so fresh and creamy and texture. And a birthday party without the cake is not successful.

Also, the fact that my birthday cake was delicious the cake made by my mother was the first that I had cut. My birthday cake was chocolate and what my mother made was a mango that gave me a real feeling of delight.

I loved my mother’s effort as she loves me a lot and my father who ordered the cake for me even in this strict lockdown. My birthday cake is an opportunity not for me but also for my sister to have something tasty as she also likes all of this.

Data in this report comes from Wave 151 of the American Trends Panel (ATP), Pew Research Center’s nationally representative panel of randomly selected U.S. adults. The survey was conducted from Aug. 5 to Aug. 11, 2024. A total of 9,201 panelists responded out of 10,079 who were sampled, for a survey-level response rate of 91%.

The cumulative response rate accounting for nonresponse to the recruitment surveys and attrition is 3%. The break-off rate among panelists who logged on to the survey and completed at least one item is 1%. The margin of sampling error for the full sample of 9,201 respondents is plus or minus 1.3 percentage points.

SSRS conducted the survey for Pew Research Center via online (n=8,935) and live telephone (n=266) interviewing. Interviews were conducted in both English and Spanish.

Panel recruitment

Since 2018, the ATP has used address-based sampling (ABS) for recruitment. A study cover letter and a pre-incentive are mailed to a stratified, random sample of households selected from the U.S. Postal Service’s Computerized Delivery Sequence File. This Postal Service file has been estimated to cover 90% to 98% of the population. 1 Within each sampled household, the adult with the next birthday is selected to participate. Other details of the ABS recruitment protocol have changed over time but are available upon request. 2 Prior to 2018, the ATP was recruited using landline and cellphone random-digit-dial surveys administered in English and Spanish.

A national sample of U.S. adults has been recruited to the ATP approximately once per year since 2014. In some years, the recruitment has included additional efforts (known as an “oversample”) to improve the accuracy of data for underrepresented groups. For example, Hispanic adults, Black adults and Asian adults were oversampled in 2019, 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Sample design

The overall target population for this survey was noninstitutionalized persons ages 18 and older living in the United States. All active panel members were invited to participate in this wave.

Questionnaire development and testing

The questionnaire was developed by Pew Research Center in consultation with SSRS. The web program used for online respondents was rigorously tested on both PC and mobile devices by the SSRS project team and Pew Research Center researchers. The SSRS project team also populated test data that was analyzed in SPSS to ensure the logic and randomizations were working as intended before launching the survey.

All respondents were offered a post-paid incentive for their participation. Respondents could choose to receive the post-paid incentive in the form of a check or gift code to Amazon.com.  Incentive amounts ranged from $5 to $20 depending on whether the respondent belongs to a part of the population that is harder or easier to reach. Differential incentive amounts were designed to increase panel survey participation among groups that traditionally have low survey response propensities.

Data collection protocol

The data collection field period for this survey was Aug. 5 to Aug. 11, 2024. Surveys were conducted via self-administered web survey or by live telephone interviewing.

For panelists who take surveys online: 3 Postcard notifications were mailed to a subset on Aug. 5. 4 Survey invitations were sent out in two separate launches: soft launch and full launch. Sixty panelists were included in the soft launch, which began with an initial invitation sent on Aug. 5. All remaining English- and Spanish-speaking sampled online panelists were included in the full launch and were sent an invitation on Aug. 6.

Panelists participating online were sent an email invitation and up to two email reminders if they did not respond to the survey. ATP panelists who consented to SMS messages were sent an SMS invitation with a link to the survey and up to two SMS reminders.

For panelists who take surveys over the phone with a live interviewer: Prenotification postcards were mailed on July 31, and reminder postcards were mailed on Aug. 5. The CATI soft launch took place on Aug. 5 and involved dialing until a total of three interviews had been completed. CATI panelists receive up to six calls from trained SSRS interviewers. All remaining English- and Spanish-speaking sampled CATI panelist numbers were dialed throughout the remaining field period.

Data quality checks

To ensure high-quality data, Center researchers performed data quality checks to identify any respondents showing patterns of satisficing. This includes checking for whether respondents left questions blank at very high rates or always selected the first or last answer presented. As a result of this checking, 4 ATP respondents were removed from the survey dataset prior to weighting and analysis.

The ATP data is weighted in a process that accounts for multiple stages of sampling and nonresponse that occur at different points in the panel survey process. First, each panelist begins with a base weight that reflects their probability of recruitment into the panel. These weights are then calibrated to align with the population benchmarks in the accompanying table to correct for nonresponse to recruitment surveys and panel attrition. If only a subsample of panelists was invited to participate in the wave, this weight is adjusted to account for any differential probabilities of selection.

Among the panelists who completed the survey, this weight is then calibrated again to align with the population benchmarks identified in the accompanying table. The weight is then trimmed at approximately the 1st and 99th percentiles to reduce the loss in precision stemming from variance in the weights. Sampling errors and tests of statistical significance take into account the effect of weighting.

The following table shows the unweighted sample sizes and the error attributable to sampling that would be expected at the 95% level of confidence for different groups in the survey.

Sample sizes and sampling errors for other subgroups are available upon request. In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of opinion polls.

Dispositions and response rates

Validated voters

Members of Pew Research Center’s nationally representative American Trends Panel were matched to public voting records from national commercial voter files in an attempt to find records for voting in the 2016 and 2020 general elections. Validated voters are citizens who told us in a post-election survey that they voted in a given election and have a record for voting in that election in a commercial voter file. Nonvoters are citizens who were not found to have a record of voting in any of the voter files or told us they did not vote.

In an effort to accurately locate official voting records, up to three commercial voter files were searched for each panelist. The number of commercial files consulted varied by when a panelist was recruited to the ATP. Three files were used for panelists recruited in 2022 or before, while one file was used for panelists recruited in 2023. Altogether, files from four different vendors were used, including two that serve conservative and Republican organizations and campaigns, one that serves progressive and Democratic organizations and campaigns, and one that is nonpartisan.

Breaking made its debut as an Olympic sport Friday, and among the competitors was Dr. Rachael Gunn, also known as B-girl Raygun, a 36-year-old professor from Sydney, Australia, who stood out in just about every way.

By day, her research interests include “dance, gender politics, and the dynamics between theoretical and practical methodologies.” But on the world’s stage in Paris, wearing green track pants and a green polo shirt instead of the street-style outfits of her much younger fellow breakers, she competed against the 21-year-old Logan Edra of the United States, known as Logistx.

During the round robin, as Raygun and Logistx faced off, Raygun laid on her side, reached for her toes, spun around, and threw in a kangaroo hop — a nod to her homeland. She performed a move that looked something like swimming and another that could best be described as duckwalking. The high-speed back and head spins that other breakers would demonstrate were mostly absent.

The crowd cheered Raygun politely. The judges weren’t as kind. All nine voted for Logistx in both rounds of the competition; Logistx won, 18-0.

Online, Raygun’s performance quickly became a sensation, not necessarily in a flattering way.

“The more I watch the videos of Raygun, the Aussie breaker, the more I get annoyed,” one viewer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “There’s 27.7 million Australians in the world and that’s who they send to the Olympics for this inaugural event??? C’mon now!”
