• Make it into a science experiment. Encourage children of all ages to experiment with different types of art mediums, such as watercolor pencils, marking pens, and paints, to see what happens when rain or water is added at home or in the classroom.
• The photograph below shows a rainbow drawn with washable markers after a few minutes in the rain. A similar but different effect will occur with watercolor pencils or paints. Test them all for a fun science activity for kids!

3. Allow Rain paintings and rainy day art to dry:

• Please pick up your rainbow rainy day art and carefully bring it inside to allow it to dry.
• When you carry the wet rain artwork inside, hold it as flat as possible. Please be mindful that rain paintings can drip and create quite a mess.
• Tile or composite floors, countertops, and tables with flat sheets, old towels, drop cloths, or tarps on top of them work well.
• You can also put it in the bathtub, but only if the art medium won’t stain the ceramic or plastic.
• The colors may shift and change depending on how much water is on the paper. Watching the colors move on wet paper is also fun for kids!

Fun Process Art for the Kids: Make Rain Art!

I’ve been wanting to try rain art for awhile. But it seems whenever it rains, we just hide indoors.

Why?! Being outside when its sprinkling it so much fun! The boys just love it!

Its been raining pretty much non-stop the last few weeks (a horrible planting season for farmers in Iowa this year).

I finally took advantage of all the rain drops and the boys and I got to see the cool effects of rain!

I’ve seen rain art be done a few ways… and I don’t think we chose the best…

I’ve seen Messy Kids use Kool-aid on paper .

I’ve seen Moment to Moment use oil pastel crayons … (by the way, look at the lanterns they made from the art, they’re fantastic!)

Even Little Page Turners used just drops of food coloring (my favorite)!

I chose to have the boys color with chalk art pastels that I had on hand. They’re a very soft chalk.

They colored a piece of paper however they liked. I let them choose two colors each (so we wouldn’t end up with muddy brown).

I showed Henry how you could used your finger to smudge the colors together. He tried it. And used his whole hand. Of course, George followed suit.

When they had their papers covered how they liked them, we took them outside since it had been sprinkling on and off all morning.

Of course, when we head out there… it doesn’t rain… we waited and waited… the boys kept coming back to check on them, just in case they missed the rain.

We left them be and headed out on a walk downtown.

Of course, it poured when we were out for a walk.

We remembered the art that we did when we were getting home and Henry rushed to check it out.

He thought his was the best (of course, his is the best everything!).

Henry’s turned out with lots of dark dots, which he thought was just amazing.

George’s, you really couldn’t see the rain spots, but it did seem more blended together.

Whatever the result, it didn’t matter, the boys thought it was fascinating seeing what the rain would do to the art they made!

We did this the other day. We used watercolor paper and put drips of liquid water color paint on them. The results were BEAUTIFUL. I actually plan to frame some they are that pretty. The girls really enjoyed running out into the rain and then watching as the pictures developed on our porch. We will certainly be doing this activity again

Super cute idea! I love letting my kids run around in the rain..as long as there is no thunder clouds. So going to try this..wait it’s raining right now! Ha!

Yep! That’s our rule too – as long as there’s not thunder or lightning, they can go out and play in it :) Hope you were able to try it when it was raining!

We’ve done rain art using the food coloring method a couple times (once when LittleMan was 2 and again when he was 4) and both times were an absolute hit. One thing we’ve done differently is we sit by the door and watch the art work get rained on on our porch, that way he can decide when he thinks the rain has done enough “helping” with his painting. We’ve also included a spray bottle for no other reason than that he likes “making rain.” Ours looked pretty cool and we had a hard time parting with them when it was time to rotate the art on display in our home. I had never thought of trying oil pastels or kool aid, I’ll have to give them a go, thanks for the tip!

That was our plan too – to watch it be rained on from our porch — but it just wasn’t raining, so we left – and of course, that’s when it rained…. ha ha! I think it would have definitely added more involvement in the process if they had been there during the rain shower.

I love the idea of just adding the spray bottle. We just did one with coffee filters – but never thought to do it like this. Thanks for the tip!

10 Most Famous Rain Paintings

Many artists draw inspiration from the weather and the changing of the seasons.

Paintings that feature rain will most always have a sense of melancholy or gloom about them as the sky darkens and the heavens open up.

Weather affects all of us, everyday and in different ways, some love the sun while some run for shade, but when it rains we almost always flee from it or take some kind of refuge in a doorway or under an umbrella.

Famous Rain Paintings

1. paris street; rainy day – gustave caillebotte.

Gustave Caillebotte’s (1848–1894) best-known work is Paris Street; Rainy Day, a massive 1877 oil painting on canvas. It depicts a group of people going through the Place de Dublin, originally known as the Carrefour de Moscou, at a junction in north Paris east of the Gare Saint-Lazare.

Although Caillebotte was a friend and patron of many impressionist artists, and this piece is included in that school, it varies in its realism and focus on line rather than sweeping brush strokes.

Caillebotte’s fascination with photography is palpable. The individuals in the front look “out of focus,” those in the middle distance (the carriage and pedestrians at the junction) have crisp edges, and the characteristics in the distant get more blurry.

The harsh cropping of several characters, notably the guy on the far right, demonstrates the effect of photography.

The picture debuted at the Third Impressionist Exhibition in 1877. The Art Institute of Chicago now owns it.

2. Rain – Vincent van Gogh

Rain is an oil-on-canvas work by Vincent van Gogh that was completed in 1889 when he was a volunteer patient at a hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

He painted the scene outside his chamber window many times, portraying the hues and tints of the fields and hills near Saint-Rémy as they looked at different times of day and in different weather situations.

Van Gogh was a volunteer patient at the Asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, a former monastery in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, from May 1889 to May 1890.

During his stay in the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole hospital, Van Gogh was particularly taken by a field behind the hospital that was surrounded by walls, which he represented in a sequence of at least 14 paintings and just as many sketches. He captured the area at various times of day and seasons.

Rain was painted on an untreated cotton canvas in November 1889, possibly during a period of heavy rain on October 31, 1889. Van Gogh depicted the rain as slanted lines that were angled differently from the lines in the wheat field in the backdrop. He was inspired by Japanese prints while producing this look.

Rain is housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the United States and measures 73.3 cm 92.4 cm (28.9 in 36.4 in).

3. The Umbrellas – Pierre-Auguste Renoir

The Umbrellas is an 1880s oil-on-canvas work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir that was completed in two stages.

It is held by the National Gallery in London as part of the Lane Bequest, however it is alternatively shown in London and at the Hugh Lane City Gallery in Dublin. It returned to Dublin for a six-year stint from May 2013 to 2019. It is presently on display in the National Gallery in London.

Renoir started the picture about 1880–81, using the free brushwork with dark and brilliant tones that was characteristic of the Impressionist style.

After abandoning Impressionism and drawing inspiration from classical art he saw in Italy and the works of Ingres and Cézanne, he reworked parts of the painting, particularly the main female figure to the left of the frame, in a more classical linear style using more muted colors, and added the background and the umbrellas themselves, around 1885.

4. Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway – J. M. W. Turner

Rain, Steam, and Speed – The Great Western Railway is an oil painting by J. M. W. Turner, a 19th-century British painter.

The artwork was initially shown at the Royal Academy in 1844, however it might have been done earlier. It is presently housed at the National Gallery in London.

Turner’s painting offers the sense of immense speed in a static work, which separated him from other painters. The piece mixes the force of nature and technology to generate an emotional tension linked with the sublime notion.

The picture was completed around the conclusion of the Industrial Revolution, which saw a significant transition in the Victorian era from an agricultural economy to one dominated by machine manufacture.

The railway was one of the most powerful symbols of industrialization, since this new mode of transportation had a significant impact on both industrial and social life.

Turner seemed to be a generation ahead of other artists since he was one of the few painters at the time who saw industrial progress as a worthy topic of art.

5. The Avenue in the Rain – Childe Hassam

The Avenue in the Rain is an oil painting by American Impressionist painter Childe Hassam, completed in 1917. It shows Fifth Avenue in New York City in the rain, covered with American flags. The artwork is one of six by Hassam in the White House’s permanent art collection in Washington, D.C.

Between 1916 and 1919, Hassam painted around thirty paintings of flag-draped streets. This work was created in February 1917, when the flag had 48 stars and the United States was about to join the First World War, at a period when patriotic fervor was high.

The artwork is 42 by 22.25 inches (106.7 cm 56.5 cm) in size and is dominated by red and blue tones, depicting the American flag. Several dark individuals hold umbrellas in the middle distance, as the far distance fades into the blue backdrop.

The flags seem to float in mid-air, suspended on poles projecting from invisible structures. The pictures are reflected in the puddles on the wet pavement and sidewalk.

6. Rainy Day, Fifth Avenue – Childe Hassam

The urban life outside Hassam’s studio on lower Fifth Avenue influenced his depictions of New York. That vast roadway, the city’s cultural and economic artery, was also the nation’s principal parade route.

When Hassam eventually relocated his studio uptown to 57th Street, closer to the core of those vibrant patriotic displays, he had a look into the country’s rising engagement in World War I.

Hassam was perhaps motivated by two paintings by Claude Monet portraying national festivities in Paris on June 30, 1878.

7. Landscape at Auvers in the Rain – Vincent van Gogh

Landscape at Auvers in the Rain is an oil on canvas work by Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter.

It portrays a scene near Auvers-sur-Oise, where van Gogh spent the final years of his life, and was finished only three days before his death in July 1890.

Van Gogh created thirteen double-square paintings of landscapes in and around Auvers between June 17 and July 27. The representation of rain with dark, diagonal lines is said to be influenced by Japanese art, notably Hiroshige’s woodcuts.

It also demonstrates van Gogh’s artwork’s visceral link between nature and emotion, as well as artistic developments such as a heightened horizon line, expressive brushstrokes, and vivid colors.

8. Seascape Study with Rain Cloud – John Constable  

Seascape Study with Rain Cloud is a Romantic oil on paper work by John Constable that was completed in 1827. It is now housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Between 1824 and 1828, John Constable made many visits to Brighton, where he stayed with his family because his wife, who suffered from TB, benefitted from the sea air.

Constable disliked living in the loud, fancy resort. He did, however, spend many hours painting the water while lounging on the beach.

9. Belle-Ile, Rain Effect – Claude Monet

Monet’s two-month vacation on the island of Belle-Ile, off the coast of Brittany, resulted in Belle-Ile, rain effect.

He was enthralled by ‘this terrible place,’ where massive granite outcrops had been twisted into strange forms by the unyielding powers of wind and sea.

Monet continued extending his stay in order to capture the impact of shifting coastal light on these natural features, as well as the ceaseless seas washing around them.

10. In the Rain – Franz Marc

Franz Marc (February 8, 1880 – March 4, 1916) was a German painter and printer who was a prominent player in German Expressionism.

His mature paintings mostly show animals and are notable for their vibrant colors. In the start of World War I, he was recruited into the German army and killed two years later at the Battle of Verdun.

As part of their persecution of contemporary art in the 1930s, the Germans labeled him a degenerate artist. However, the majority of his work survived WWII, ensuring his legacy.

The majority of his mature work depicts animals, frequently in natural settings such as In the Rain . His art is distinguished by vivid primary colors, almost cubist depictions of animals, stark simplicity, and a great feeling of emotion.

How to Draw Realistic Rain: A Step by Step Guide for Beginner Artists

Drawing rain in your art can make it look more interesting and moody . This is why you should learn how to draw realistic rain the right way.

This guide will help you draw better rain that you can also apply to painting realistic rain.

How To Draw Realistic Rain The Right Way

So, a lot of people think drawing rain means you draw individual drops falling straight down from the sky in a uniform up-to-down motion.

The reality is, rain usually falls sideways, and not all raindrops are the same size.

You can get away with drawing realistic rain by simply drawing light, short diagonal lines that get a little thicker and darker towards the bottom. See the picture below for what I mean.

You don’t even need to make the lines all the same size or perfect. This doesn’t happen in nature and it does not need to happen in your drawing.

Here is an alternative to drawing rain. Notice the lack of detail but also notice how I used white drops on the darker background and darker drops on the lighter background.

Mixing it up makes your rain look more realistic as you are giving it shade, depth, light and many other attributes I discuss later in this guide.

While I explain how to draw realistic rain using pencils, you can follow the same steps using a fine brush and any kind of paint.

Draw Rain Dropping Diagonally

Start with a light pencil like a 2H and pick a spot on the paper and flick the pencil upwards to make a diagonal line.

As I am right-handed, this usually means the rain is angled at a 60-degree angle, falling right to left, as the images show below.

This gives your rain drop drawing a more realistic look to it.

Once you have a few of these drawn, grab an HB pencil and at the bottom part of each raindrop, make it a little darker and shade some of the falling drop lines.

Remember to be consistent with which side you shade; follow the normal rules of shadows being cast based on your light source.

Easy Ways to Improve Rain Drawings

Here are some easy ways to make your rain drawings better. They help your art look rainy without taking over the whole picture.

Observe Real Rain

Next time it rains, stare out the window, I mean watch the rain really come down and play close attention. Make it go in slow motion in your mind.

Pay close attention to how rain looks in different settings. Notice raindrops’ size, shape, and speed in various weather conditions.

Vary Raindrop Sizes

Not all raindrops are the same size. Include a mix of small and larger drops to add realism.

They don’t even need to look like individual drops of detailed rain when you’re drawing a lot of them.

Pick a few and add some detail. The rest can be blurred lines.

Show Motion with Streaks

When drawing raindrops in motion, use streaks. Longer streaks indicate faster rain, while shorter streaks suggest lighter rain.

Use Angles and Direction

Rain rarely falls straight down. Show the effect of wind by angling the raindrops in a consistent direction.

Add Reflections and Wet Surfaces

Show the impact of rain on surfaces. Puddles, wet roads, and shiny leaves add to the rainy atmosphere.

Create Depth with Shading

Lighter shading can represent rain further away, while darker, more defined drops indicate rain that’s closer.

Utilize Blurring for Distance

Slightly blur or soften rain in the background to create a sense of depth.

Incorporate Splashes

Where raindrops hit surfaces, add small splashes or circles to show the impact.

Consider the Light Source

How light interacts with raindrops can change their appearance. Bright light can create highlights, while overcast conditions may soften the look of the rain.

Practice Consistency

Keep your raindrops’ direction, size, and style consistent throughout the drawing for a cohesive look.

You will find that when you add all or most of these steps into your rain drawing , your rain drawing will be better than 90% of other artists drawing what they think is realistic rain.

How Rain Works on Different Surfaces

When you draw rain on things like leaves, windows, or skin, it shows how rain changes them.

Artists use different shading to make things look wet.

I like to make the water droplets act like a magnifying glass when it’s on a surface. It should magnify parts of the surface and distort the image a little.

If you take this approach, your raindrop will look very realistic on any surface. Have a look at some examples below.

Important Ways to Draw Good Rain

Understanding how light changes rain.

Making rain look real in art is all about how light plays with the water. Rain isn’t colored but it changes how light looks.

Think how the rain you are drawing exists in relation to the wider image. That is, are you just drawing rain or are you drawing rain in a city scape?

Is the rain falling on a road? Is the rain dripping down a window? Now that you are asking yourself these questions, think about the light source and its effect on rain and water.

The amount of light and the type of light source will change how realistic your rain drops will look in comparison to its surroundings.

• Sunlight : Makes rainbows, adds bright spots.
• Overcast Sky: Mutes reflections and creates soft contrasts.
• Artificial Light : Makes sharp, elongated highlights and shadows.

Enhancing the Effects of Rain by Surface

The impact of rain on different surfaces.

• Glass : When rain hits glass, like windows, it leaves streaks. You can draw lines that show the raindrops sliding down. The glass might also look foggy where the rain is more dense.
• Metal : On metal surfaces, like cars or metal railings, raindrops create shiny spots. These spots can be drawn as little bright dots or circles to show where the light reflects off the wet metal.
• Soil : Rain makes soil look darker. In your drawing, you can shade the ground more where the rain is hitting it. The edges of puddles in the soil can be less clear, showing how the water soaks into the dirt.

Depicting Rain in Natural and Urban Settings

• Forests and Fields : In natural places like forests or fields, rain can change the whole mood. Draw rain with vertical lines of different thicknesses to show it falling among the trees. Adding a misty look in the background can make it feel more humid and rainy.
• City Streets : Rain in the city looks different. Streets get wet and shiny, reflecting street lights and neon signs. You can draw puddles that show reflections of buildings, cars, and streetlights. The rain makes the city colors look more vibrant in the puddles and on wet surfaces.

Can you now see how putting together all these tips and techniques are adding up to a more realistic drawing of rain? Pretty cool hey.

Now before you stop reading, have a look at some of the common mistakes people make when drawing rain. I have even listed some quick fixes for you.

Common Mistakes in Drawing Rain (and How to Fix Them)

Too uniform rain streaks.

• What’s the Mistake? Sometimes, when people draw rain, they make all the streaks look the same – same length, same direction. It’s like having soldiers all in a row, which isn’t how real rain looks.
• How to Fix It: Mix it up! Draw some rain streaks longer, some shorter. Have them going slightly different directions, like how the wind would blow them. This makes your rain look more natural, like it’s really falling from the sky.

Inaccurate Color Choices

• What’s the Mistake? It’s tempting to use bright blues or even purples for rain, but that’s not how rain really looks. Bright colors can make your rain seem fake.
• How to Fix It: Use more natural colors. Think about how rain looks on a normal day. It’s clear, but maybe it has a slight gray or blue tint. Using softer, subtler colors will make your rain look more real.

Too Much Detail and Complexity

• What’s the Mistake? Sometimes, in trying to make rain look cool, you might add too many details – like too many droplets or too many lines. This can make your drawing look messy or cluttered.
• How to Fix It: Keep it simple. Focus on a few well-drawn rain streaks. Remember, sometimes less is more. By not overdoing it, your rain will stand out better and add to your drawing without overpowering it.

Missing Contrast and Volume

• What’s the Mistake? If all your raindrops look flat or the same, your rain won’t look real. It needs to have some depth.
• How to Fix It: Use shading. For raindrops that are closer, make them darker and more detailed. For ones farther away, make them lighter and blurrier. This creates a sense of depth, like some rain is near and some is far away. It makes your drawing pop, like you’re right there in the rain.

By watching out for these common mistakes and knowing how to fix them, you will see that your rain drawings will look much better.

How To Turn A Rainy Day Into Art

Seattle artist Peregrine Church uses rain as his medium. By stenciling images and words on the sidewalk in water-repellent spray, he creates Rainworks —art pieces that appear only when it’s wet outside. Instead of shelling out $45 for the paint Church uses, you can follow the lead of DIYer Dan Rojas to make your own. Rojas discovered that spray antiperspirant contains a commonly used hydrophobic chemical. Clear spray paint binds it in place, creating a cheap water repellent that can last for months. “A lot of the stuff you see,” Rojas says, “was made when people put two or three products together and came up with something new.”

Instructions

• Cut a stencil out of cardstock and place it on the sidewalk. Spray with clear paint.
• While the clear coat is still wet, mist with deodorant.

Rainy weather is a great topic to explore with preschoolers. Most preschoolers love rain – watching it, walking in it, and even jumping in puddles. Preschoolers can discover that rain provides needed water for animals and plants and other science concepts.

NASCAR masters the art of racing after the rain on wet-weather tires at New Hampshire

LOUDON, N.H. (AP) — After decades of races shortened or delayed by sprinkles or severe storms, NASCAR may have finally mastered the art of racing in the rain.

Well, at least on a damp track.

Christopher Bell drove the final 86 laps Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to become the first driver in the Cup Series to win a race on Goodyear rain tires.

It was a race Bell wouldn’t have won before this season — New Hampshire was stopped by rain with 82 scheduled laps left and it would not have resumed without the wet-weather tires. That would have meant a checkered flag for Tyler Reddick.

Bell instead celebrated his second career Cup win at New Hampshire once the race resumed on the new tires and swept the weekend following his Xfinity Series win on Saturday.

“We would have been done with 82 laps to go,” senior vice president of competition Elton Sawyer said. “It gave us an opportunity to get that green.”

NASCAR switched to wet-weather tires Sunday after a 2 hour, 15-minute weather delay that threatened to end the race. New Hampshire had a solid crowd for its lone Cup weekend and fans that braved the weather and stuck out the delay were treated to a thrilling — and complete — race to the end because of the tires.

“Our fans that bought a ticket, they got to see some great, exciting racing,” Sawyer said. “There are still some things that we’re learning through this process.”

The Xfinity Series also used the wet-weather tires on Saturday.

Bell, team owner Joe Gibbs and crew chief Adam Stevens all had rave reviews for the tires.

“I was probably the biggest skeptic when they said they wanted to run wet at the ovals,” Stevens said. “I thought they were crazy. They proved me wrong, for sure. They did a really good job of coming up with a plan methodically. They figured out that once you got the water off the race track, you could run in it. That was probably the best way to dry the track, too.”

Sawyer said the idea to move ahead with Goodyear for a reliable rain tire was the vision of NASCAR chairman Jim France. The tires weren’t constructed to be used when it’s actually raining but once the severe weather has passed and the oval tracks are still damp. Teams had a maximum of four sets of wet-weather tires to race on the damp oval track. Teams had to take rain tires during pit stops and their position could not be affected.

NASCAR used non-competitive pit stops because pit road was not completely dry.

“We just want to do this in the safest way possible,” Sawyer said.

NASCAR only used a wet-weather tire once before on an oval in a Cup race — at the start of this season’s race at Richmond that saved it from a lengthy delay.

“If you look at the reason we came up with this and started working with teams and the folks at the (research and development center), it was to do exactly what we did yesterday with the Xfinity race and what we did today with the Cup race,” Swayer said. “So yes, very successful.”

The Russian capital, Moscow, on Tuesday recorded its highest temperature in 134 years, authorities said.

The mercury hit a high of "+32" degrees Celsius, the TASS news agency reported.

Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Meteorological Center, said the last time the city's temperature rose to +31.9 was on July 2, 1890.

Temperatures have been increasing in all Russian cities, sometimes crossing the 35-degree mark recently.

State of emergency

Two Russian regions declared a state of emergency on July 1 as summer wildfires spread amid intense heat.

The governor of the remote Siberian region of Tuva said the authorities had taken the step due to forest fires caused by intense heat, strong winds and dry thunderstorms.

"At the moment, 23 forest fires have been registered on the territory of the republic. About 1,700 hectares are covered by fire. Most of them are in inaccessible mountainous areas," Vladislav Khovalyg, head of Tuva region, posted on Telegram.

Weather forecasters predict the heat will subside in the next few days, and rain is expected in some parts of the region, he said.

"However we cannot rely on the weather: July as a whole promises to be the most difficult month in terms of the fire situation. And we have to fight for every hectare of forest," Khovalyg wrote.

In Russia’s Far East, a federal state of emergency was declared in the Republic of Sakha, also known as Yakutia. The Russian ministry of emergency situations said there were 107 wildfires registered on more than 331,000 hectares.

The situation was being monitored by drones, the ministry said on Telegram.
