  • Trivia One of the screenwriters Sanjay said the name 'Chandran' was considered for the character from the very beginning. But the power of the character has doubled with the addition of the place name Kadakkal to Chandran. Prior to the name, Kadakkal is very attractive also. The idea struck him when he went through this place several times. When the screenwriters thought of such a background, they came up with the idea of why Chandran could not be a Kollam district resident. That's it. Each region has its own politics. That is the politics of Chandran. Chandran got that majesty when the name of the place was added to the name of the leader and it was when Kadakkal came along.

*No Spoilers Ahead*

What's Yay:

Mammootty's majestic portrayal of Kadakkal Chandran

Impressive first half and interval block

Cinematography and background score

What's Nay:

Average second half

Kadakkal Chandran (Mammootty) is a senior politician and the Chief Minister of Kerala. His strong decisions and morals equally irk both the opposition party as well as the members of his own party. However, Baby (Joju George), the party secretary and Chandran's best buddy, always supports his decisions. However, things take a different turn when Kadakkal Chandran decides to present the 'Right to Recall' bill.

One Movie Review: Mammootty Shines Bright In This Moving Political Drama | One Movie Review Malayalam | One Review | One Review And Rating

Script & Direction

Director Santhosh Viswanath, along with scriptwriter duo Bobby-Sanjay, creates an earnest, moving political drama that discusses the importance of democracy and "Right To Recall". The character sketch and presentation of Kadakkal Chandran, the almost-Godly Chief Minister is highly impactful. Chandran is a man who is beyond all political games and agenda, he's almost flawless.

One is all about the honorouble CM's political as well as personal journies, and the battles he faces all alone. Despite being a realistic political drama, the Santhosh Viswanath directorial has some low-key mass moments in store for its leading man, and it does cause a huge adrenaline rush. The first-half majorly concentrates on establishing the characters, especially Chandran. The interval block is highly impressive and suggests that something more exciting is awaiting in the second half.

But One also has its flaws. The movie struggles to meet the expectations created by the impressive first half with its average second half and climax, which are stretched and half-baked. The Mammootty starrer also tends to get borderline-preachy and lacks conviction at points. Most of the supporting characters that had high potential are wasted with limited screentime and no scope to perform.

Performances

Mammootty once again stuns the audience with his majestic screen presence and brilliant performance as Kadakkal Chandran in One . The megastar brings the rooted yet larger-than-life persona of the Kerala Cheif Minister to life with absolute ease. Mammootty's voice modulation is simply impeccable.

Murali Gopy excels as the crooked opposition leader Jayanandan, while Joju George portrays the dilemmas of the party secretary Baby to near perfection. The rest of the star cast, including Mathew Thomas, Salim Kumar, Madhu, Shankar Ramakrishnan, director Ranjith, Jagadheesh, Sudheer Karamana, Prem Kumar, Mamukoya, Meghanadhan, Jayakrishan, Sudev Nair, Nimisha Sajayan, Nishanth Sagar, Gayathri Arun, Ishaani Krishna, and so on are good in their respective roles.

Technical Aspects

Vaidy Somasundaram, the DOP has done a brilliant job with the visualisation of this realistic political thriller. Nishad Yusuf' editing is not up to the mark, as the movie falls into slow pace and looks stretched in the second half.

Gopi Sundar, the National award-winning musician scores with a brilliant background score, that elevates the overall mood. However, the only song, which is sung by Shankar Mahadevan, fails to create any impact.

Mammootty's extraordinary performance is the backbone of this moving political drama. Despite the minor flaws in storytelling, One emerges as a highly impactful theatrical experience.

one movie review in tamil

Now streaming on:

Director Julian Farino ’s “The Union” follows Mike ( Mark Wahlberg ), a construction worker content with his job, dive bar outings with his friends, and sleeping with his former seventh-grade teacher (an awkward joke that remains a punchline over the course of the film’s entirety). When his adolescent flame, Roxanne ( Halle Berry ) returns to the east coast after decades of no contact, what he thinks is a meet cute down memory lane turns into an international intelligence operation.

Hackers have accessed the personal information of all of the Western world’s government employees, from soldiers to cops and the FBI. Agent Roxanne and her cut-to-the-chase boss Tom (J.K. Simmons) are spearheading the mission to retrieve the hack to prevent it from getting in the wrong hands. Their titular organization, The Union, is a small, highly secretive agency within the government, akin to the operations of the CIA. They’re “an invisible army that keeps the world running,” an agency that looks for street-smart, blue collar individuals who fly under the radar. Kidnapping Mike from New Jersey to London, Roxanne enlists his help for this high-stakes assignment for one sole reason: “He’s a nobody.” It’s a flimsy premise that precedes an equally thin film.

There’s no driving force when it comes to the characters. We suspend disbelief that Mike would be remotely interested in this life-threatening operation for which he has no true technical skills solely out of nostalgic romance and maybe a hint of patriotic duty (the latter of which is not far off but assumed more for Wahlberg’s habitual social sentiments than anything in-script). On paper, the plot seems to be the sole consideration of the film, while character development and world-building this criminal underbelly falls to the wayside.

Everything about “The Union” is painstakingly familiar. Wahlberg kicks back and lounges comfortably in his habitual role: a laid back, kinda cocky east coaster who juggles punchlines and machismo. Berry, who is fully capable of being a compelling action star, (most recently in the third installment of the John Wick franchise), attempts her best with the film’s shoddy script. “The Union” hits bullet points on its outline with an overwhelming sense of tired obligation and stunted creativity. Its leads have no chemistry and being that their will-they-won’t-they serves as the story’s main attempt at depth, the emotive capabilities of the film sputter and shut down.

“The Union” delivers tonal whiplash on account of its failure to exceed at either end of its genre attempt at action-comedy. The action is mostly unremarkable, with a few key set pieces that pump the pace, but ultimately neglect to put anything exciting on display. Rebounds of exposition and non-committal world building fudge the film’s flow, making the 105-minute runtime feel like a fight to the finish.

Its ham-fisted comedic attempts incite semi-indignant smirks and exasperated chuckles rather than genuine, inspired laughter. Most of the jokes hit with the punch of a half-deflated whoopee cushion, and the sneaking feeling that the script was written on the basis of cheap laughs creeps further up your back as the minutes tick on. “The Union” is unspecial and unengaging. It lacks charm and excitement, clutching to simplicity and a lazy script that relies on star power that’s not bright enough to save it.

One Movie Review: Mammootty Brings His A-Game In This Too Good To Be True Film

Mammootty is amazing but that isn’t enough to make a film brilliant in totality..

one movie review in tamil

Star Cast: Mammootty, Murali Gopy, Joju George, Salim Kumar, Mathew Thomas, Nimisha Sajayan, Madhu

Director: Santhosh Vishwanath

one movie review in tamil

What’s Good: Mammootty enters the frame and lives the life of bipolarity through a character that has lost himself to help his people.

What’s Bad: The film relies too much on the superstar and doesn’t really become a strong voice or representation that we expect from a politically sound social drama.

Loo Break: every time the DOP decides to take a slow-motion shot of Mammootty , RUN!

Watch or Not?: if you are still stuck in ‘too good to be true’ films and a Mammootty fan, why are you even here? Go watch. Others don’t go in expecting you are going to get the reality. It’s a template of how we want our Chief Minister(s) to be. Anil Kapoor did that back in 2001, 20 years ago. Just a lesser sanitised version, maybe.

One can be simply described as Mammootty explaining to the world what CMs are supposed to do. But I will be more creative, don’t worry. Kadakkal Chandran, CM of Kerala, is a person everyone unanimously dreads. Ones who have met him and even the ones who have just heard his name. But who is he? Is he that cruel? Does democracy mean anything to him? Why the fear? Everything is dissected when a boy and his friend dare to call him out after he is assaulted by the CM’s security guard at a hospital the boy’s father is admitted in.

one movie review in tamil

One Movie Review: Script Analysis

The last three films I got the watch are The Priest , Wild Dog and One. A thing that is common between all the above is the presence of a mass superstar; two even have the same. While The Priest was successful in putting the story above the star, Wild Dog was halfway there. Sad to report, One fails in that department, but Mammootty saves the day. More about that later.

My intrigue was upped by many levels when I read Bobby and Sanjay have penned One. Not to forget, these are the same guys who have shaped films like Uyare and Mumbai Police (if you haven’t, go for them before you watch One). The writers are known for tackling social stigmas and issues through their narratives respectfully. Remember how Mumbai Police focused on the LGBTQ community (don’t come at me calling it a spoiler. The film is ancient now).

With One, they try to do the same. They talk about the fact how the citizens are dreadful of the chair regardless of the fact of how the person sitting on it is. With that, they also focus on how a Chief Minister is supposed to be. What creates ideologies, and how to follow them and sow their seeds. For the first half an hour, it is just the build-up to meeting the man who sums it up all.

These 30 minutes, in my opinion, are closest to reality, and thus relatable to the max. A young boy Sanal, after his father is admitted to the hospital due to an inhumane incident, is manhandled by the cops outside the hospital because the CM is inside. That creates a whirlpool inside him, and when a friend triggers it, he decides to call that out through a social media post.

The post goes viral, and the opposition to the CM begin juicing out the situation. The ruling party is looking for the boy, who is running away thinking that the CM will kill him. Now, this was a fertile ground to showcase how rebels are created. The relation between the youth and the politics. Veteran politicians prepping up the youth. And Sanjay and Bobby too try and show all of that, but sadly fall prey to the command of overshadowing it all with Mammootty’s magnum presence.

What we instead get is a half baked look at a CM trying to get rid of the evils in the system, and incorporating the people in the system. The idea of giving power in those hands who elect the king is ideal in creating a social drama that will speak to the masses. But if your constant gaze is on how your antagonist walks in slow-motion, while you zoom in towards his shining shoes, writers can’t do much.

My interest forever was with the dynamic the Sanal and the CM shared. It seemed like a man is preparing his prodigy. Whenever youth and politics meet, it has to be fresh, because it is. Remember Mani Ratnam’s Yuva, not an exact example, but that is what I was hoping for. But the makers completely forget the angle for long chunks, and all Sanal gets to do by the end is stand and clap at a speech that Kadakkal has given. Wow inspired!

One Movie Review: Star Performance

I have indeed criticised the slow-motion shots, and too much focus on Mammootty, but that doesn’t take away anything from the fact that the superstar has kept his best foot forward. The actor plays a politician who has almost no family to lose. He is not just an image of a democratic leader to the world, but actually a democratic man in real life. His orders are not brutal commands but requests.

Though he gets no backstory, but you can see where he has come from. Mammootty lives the bipolarity of his character. You see it clearly when he forgets his signature. There is a battle within a battle, and with his calm face, he aces every minute of playing the part.

Mathew Thomas gets to play the boy Sanal. In the first few minutes he is given a breakdown scene and he proves to have calibre. The actor manages to embody the character and impress. And I will say that again, I wish he would have been explored more.

The Great Indian Kitchen actor Nimisha Sajayan gets an inconsequential cameo. Joju George and Madhu do what they know best.

one movie review in tamil

One Movie Review: Direction, Music

Santhosh Vishwanath takes the director’s chair and heads the film in directions far away from each other. The first hour is completely different from the next, and the climax conflict can be an entirely different film. Good that he is backed by some amazing actors, or the chinks would have shined brighter.

What kills the mood is the sanitisation of it all. Now the production design team is also to be blamed. For a film that talks about politics of the real world, there are no names, no mentions. Not even fictional flags to differentiate between the organisations. Everything becomes too vanilla, and we know that isn’t true at all.

Background score is grand and helpful to the fabric of the film.

One Movie Review: The Last Word

One is an honest attempt to telling the world how it is supposed to be, but a bit too sanitised. Mammootty is amazing but that isn’t enough to make a film brilliant in totality.

Mani ratnam’s ponniyin selvan 1 movie review tamil news:

one movie review in tamil

Ponniyin Selvan

ponniyin selvan 1 review in tamil :

publive-image

Aishwarya Rai as Nandini in Ponniyin Selvan

In ‘Good One,’ a family camping trip is full of emotional switchbacks

Justin Chang

Lily Collias brings a nearly wordless intensity as Sam in Good One.

Lily Collias brings a nearly wordless intensity as Sam in Good One. Smudge Films hide caption

Too often, the month of August is regarded as a fallow period for moviegoing, after the big blockbusters of the summer but before the awards contenders of the fall. But the aptly titled new movie Good One is a reminder that there are always smart, interesting films being released, if you’re willing to look beyond the obvious. As it turns out, looking beyond the obvious is something that the writer-director India Donaldson has a real knack for. In just 90 minutes, she tells a three-character story that appears simple enough on the surface, yet it’s so sharp and engrossing that you might not immediately notice the deeper story taking shape underneath.

Lily Collias plays 17-year-old Sam, who’s going backpacking in the Catskills with her father, Chris — that’s the terrific James Le Gros in a too-rare leading role. They’re supposed to be joined by Chris’ oldest friend, Matt, and his teenage son, Dylan. But Matt winds up being the only one to come along; he and Dylan’s mom are recently divorced, and Dylan isn’t taking it well.

Chris himself has been divorced for a while, and he and Sam have a pretty harmonious relationship by comparison. They seem to get along even when they’re bickering, as happens when Chris criticizes Sam’s driving.

Much of the movie consists of Sam listening quietly as Chris and Matt go on and on, reminiscing about old times yet always finding new things to grouse about. Chris, a savvy outdoorsman, can’t stop complaining about how badly Matt has overpacked for a three-day hiking trip.

Clockwise from top left: Inside Out 2, Thelma, Twisters, Hit Man, Fancy Dance and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.

These are the 19 movies we're most excited about this summer

While the two men rarely ask Sam how she’s doing or feeling, they seem cool enough where it counts. Chris has long been supportive of his daughter’s queer identity; she has a girlfriend whom she texts during the trip, whenever she can get a cellphone signal. Matt tells Sam that she’s wise beyond her years: Unlike all the other reckless, rebellious teenagers out there, she’s a rare “good one” in his book.

Scene by scene, however, writer-director Donaldson paints a subtler picture of the dynamics at work. At times Good One reminded me of Kelly Reichardt ’s quietly perceptive 2006 drama, Old Joy , which also squeezed a lot of emotional history into a fateful camping trip.

You get the sense that Sam has traveled a bunch with her dad and Matt before, and that she’s long adjusted to her designated role. When the three of them share a motel room on their way up to the Catskills, it’s Sam who instinctively rolls out her sleeping bag, without even being asked, leaving the two beds to the men. And once they reach their campsite, it’s Sam who cooks dinner for the three of them without complaint. The dynamics are complicated. Beneath the men’s easygoing manner, there’s an unmistakable air of condescension toward Sam, a sense that their appreciation of her is more conditional than genuine.

If Sam resents them for any of this, she doesn’t show it, at least not at first. Collias gives a beautifully understated performance; with very little effort, she can register everything from wry affection to barely concealed exasperation. And Donaldson, working with the cinematographer Wilson Cameron, proves as keenly observant as her protagonist. She’s alive to the beauty of the mountains, whether it’s the sight of a majestic canyon or the sound of rushing water. Some of the movie’s slow-simmering tension arises from your uncertainty about what might be lurking nearby, whether it’s a bear in search of food or three young men they cross paths with on the hiking trail.

But Good One isn’t one of those movies in which a journey into the wilderness spirals into horror. The dangers that Donaldson introduces are of a more intimate and perhaps more insidious nature. There comes a moment in the story when everything changes, and it’s at once surprising and unsurprising, all too believable and, in the moment, perhaps a little contrived.

But that hardly matters. What matters is how Sam responds to this sudden shift, and Collias shows her unpacking that response almost in real time, and with a nearly wordless intensity. Good One has the concision of a sharply etched short story, but what happens by the end can’t be easily summed up. Sam won’t soon forget the lessons of this particular trip, and neither will we.

Movie Review: Delicate and powerful, ‘Good One’ is one of the year’s indie breakouts

A 17-year-old’s perception of her father is forever altered on a three-day backpacking trip in India Donaldson’s excellent debut “ Good One ,” in theaters Friday .

Something happens. And then something doesn’t happen. But that’s more of the tear point on the already delicate fabric of a relationship that has been deteriorating from neglect for years.

The trip to the Catskills was envisioned as a joint family trip. Chris (James Le Gros) and his daughter Sam (newcomer Lily Collias) planned to go with Chris’s old friend Matt (Danny McCarthy) and his teenage son. But when they pull up to Matt’s place, there’s an argument taking place between the father and son, who retreats to the apartment as Matt stomps to Chris’s car. The teenage son is no longer joining them.

Donaldson focuses her camera on Sam, whose face and deeply expressive eyes tell you everything you need to know: This is weird and it doesn’t feel right. Suddenly she’s on a boys trip with a pair of sad middle aged men who have known one another for decades and whose lives haven’t worked out the way they thought. Both are divorced. Chris has moved on and has a new baby. Matt is still in the early stages of having his life upended. And, boy, do they talk about their failed relationships, one of whom is obviously Sam’s mother. “I couldn’t make her happy.” “She was the one who started doing things first.” “I didn’t want to get divorced.”

Sam rolls her eyes a lot of the time; Other times she responds insightfully. The guys seem to half hear her, but also not. They long ago decided on their own narrative, their victimhood, and Sam is not going to change that with a bit of innocent truth.

Image

Are they always this honest with their disappointments, failures and shortcomings around their kids, you wonder? Or is this a new thing happening on this trip? Chris, in particular, has forgotten that Sam, as worldly and wise as she seems, is still ultimately just a kid. You sense that Sam has already started to realize that her father is as flawed as anyone; but on this trip, his full self is on display.

Image

All of the acting is terrific and so naturalistic that it’s easy to forget that these are actors performing lines that they’ve memorized in front of a camera. Le Gros as the fastidious super camper, who freaks out about his daughter’s safety from bears when he discovers that Matt was eating in his tent, but does little later on; And McCarthy as a failed actor and now failed husband who can be charming and fun but is mostly annoying and gross. But the real breakout is Collias. Her face and presence, empathetic and knowing, carries the whole film in an unforgettable depiction of modern girlhood with all of the dreaminess, awkwardness and boredom.

Donaldson, like Kelly Reichardt , has a keen eye for the smallest of details; A reaction, a wince, even a blank expression that says everything. She also knows when to turn away from the dialogue and the people and give the audience a nature break. One of many great decisions was to have Sam on her period during the trip, something she deals with silently behind trees and bushes as the guys wait impatiently.

At one point the guys are dreaming about what they’d do differently if they had a second chance at life. Matt would be a philosopher. Chris would own a bookstore. What about Sam, they ask. She responds that hopefully she still has a shot at deciding on this life. Indeed.

These stakes might seem comparatively small in a movie landscape of deadly tornadoes, apocalypses and multiverses colliding. But that’s what makes it so special. It is humanity, with all of its beauties and disappointments, as most of us experience it. And it’s one that will likely stay with you for some time.

“Good One,” a Metrograph pictures release in limited theaters Friday, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “language.” Running time: 90 minutes. Four stars out of four.

One Fast Move Reviews

Blatz opts for scenes full of action and adrenaline, with moments that explore the complexities of family relationships. However, the film fails to escape genre tropes, making it predictable at several points. [Full review in Spanish]

one movie review in tamil

For most of its nearly two hour run time, One Fast Move feels stuck in neutral. Director/writer Kelly Blatz seems unwilling to take any interesting or risky detours with this racing film.

Full Review | Original Score: 5/10 | Aug 11, 2024

One Fast Move circles the same old sports-flick track, round and round, round and round.

Full Review | Aug 9, 2024

It’s difficult to say which are more numerous—the cycles or the clichés—in Kelly Blatz’s movie about a young biker who aims to become a pro...a warmed-over retread of the kind of sports story we’ve seen many times before.

Although some of the racing sequences are exciting, the cliché-fueled screenplay runs out of gas well before the finish line.

A woodsy hike becomes a Petri dish of human nature in “Good One,” writer-director India Donaldson ’s tense, revealing and exquisitely composed feature debut about a 17-year-old at the cusp of adulthood. In its lived-in quality and gathering churn, “Good One” is a dream of an indie, from the craft in every frame to the humor, epiphanies and mysteries that gird its portraiture.

Its watchful soul is a New York daughter of divorce, Sam (Lily Collias, a real find), who with her remarried architect dad, Chris (James Le Gros), is expecting their Upstate excursion to be a backpacking foursome. But when the teenage son of dad’s oldest pal, Matt (Danny McCarthy), bows out at the last second, making them a trio, Sam finds herself without a peer, a deflation that Collias perfectly conveys without words from the SUV’s backseat. Over an endurance test of a weekend, we’ll get to know this Mona Lisa-esque face very well as Sam’s microexpressions and utterances betray fascinating variations on “How did I get here?”

That’s because the trip quickly becomes the Matt and Chris show, a long-running two-hander stuffed with bickering, personality tics and grievances that suggests a friendship of opposites long past its sell-by date. Sam’s gently patronizing dad, masterfully rendered by one of our most underappreciated actors (when will James Le Gros get his Oscar?), is an uptight, over-organized weekend warrior with little tolerance for his old chum’s shambolic quality and self-mythologizing patter. Matt, meanwhile, is avuncular and parlor-philosophical, but in McCarthy’s perfectly captured performance of an ego barely hanging on by some well-chewed fingernails, he can barely hide how depressed he is about a life gone sideways, or how hurt he is by Chris’s jabs.

Two men hike in the woods.

It all leaves Sam in a situation where she’s not only a lone target for the pair’s “These kids today”-style ribbing, but also, by turns, a personal assistant, cook, advisor and peacekeeper. (When Sam tends to her period squatting behind a tree, the vibe is of a worker’s ill-timed break.) A quality getaway with loved ones starts to feel like managing a suffocating situation. Even her sympathy gets weaponized: When she indulges Matt’s harmlessly random musings or laughs with him, you can feel her father’s irritation rise.

“Good One” is soexpert at tracking a young woman’s emotional intelligence — as amusing, preciseand patient as a Kelly Reichardt film like “Certain Women” — that when the moment arrives when everything shifts, it’s a legitimate surprise. Don’t call it a twist, though. (No spoilers here.) It’s a built-in hinge, and the melodrama-averse Donaldson treats it as such, letting it open the door for a final act of decision-making and discovery that positions Sam as emerging from this odd, illuminating trip a more self-possessed individual.

A filmmaker in a button-down top poses for the camera.

India Donaldson grew up around Hollywood A-listers. Now she’s cutting her own path

Her father is responsible for ‘No Way Out’ and ‘Cocktail,’ but India Donaldson has found a signature way into filmmaking with her celebrated indie debut, ‘Good One.’

Aug. 6, 2024

So much of this psychologically complex movie’s artistry is wonderfully assured, from cinematographer Wilson Cameron’s textured intimacy with nature and faces, to the tenderly applied, deceptively varied music. But what most gives me hope for Donaldson as a filmmaker, however, is how much she cares about the lost magic of scene work, those building blocks of human interaction — movement, composition, dialogue, pacing, depth and in this case the gifts of an incredible newcomer in Collias — that fuse us to a movie’s internal logic, its intangibles. “Good One” is as complete a piece of storytelling as you’ll see all year. For a pot of frogs coming to a boil, it’s a great place to be.

28. Thalaikoothal (2023)

one movie review in tamil

This emotionally moving drama throws light on the ritual of Thalaikoothal, the traditional practice of senicide or involuntary euthanasia, which is prevalent in several districts in Tamil Nadu, India. A family may perform Thalaikoothal on a bedridden, comatose family member when all other options have been exhausted. In the film, lower-class middle-aged Pazhani (Samuthirakani) finds himself conflicted between family responsibilities (he has a wife, Kalaiselvi, and a daughter, Raji) and love for his comatose father, Muthu (Kalaiselvan), whose care affects their household finances. This plot moves ahead alongside a second one that shows Muthu’s youth and love life, the film’s way of putting things in perspective. Directed by Jayaprakash Radhakrishnan, ‘Thalaikoothal’ co-stars Kathir as young Muthu, Vasundhara Kashyap as Kalaiselvi, and Katha Nandi as Pechi, young Muthu’s love interest. one movie review in tamil

How long can you take a beating without knowing what you have been accused of? ‘Visaaranai’ is a chilling manifestation of this question. We have four laborers who are arrested and tortured almost to death to force them to surrender and take the blame for a high-profile robbery, a case that the cops need to close as soon as possible. A police inspector helps them walk free, but in return, they are required to kidnap another person. This kidnapping, unbeknownst to the laborers, is part of a deeper conspiracy by the state’s ruling political party. When the person dies in custody, his death is again pinned on the four laborers. The film is adapted from the novel ’Lock Up,’ written by M. Chandrakumar, who is the only surviving laborer in the story. To find out what happened to the other three guys, you can watch this Vetrimaaran directorial right here .

13. Mehandi Circus (2019)

one movie review in tamil

When two people fall in love, it is not just about the two who are involved; social implications shadow their love story, which has the potential to destroy lives. The tale of Mehandi (Shweta Tripathi) and Jeeva (Madhampatty Rangaraj) is tainted by caste differences and jealousy. Set in the 1990s, ‘Mehandi Circus’ is Saravana Rajendran’s directorial debut. He brings to life the fading art of the circus of which Mehandi is a part. Jeeva is the owner of a music shop in Kodaikanal where Mehandi’s circus troupe comes to perform. The circus troupe used in the film is Kamala Circus from Gujarat. The film’s color palette makes the scenes spectacular and conveys a sense of nostalgia. You may watch it here .

One thing is for sure, this film will make you miss your grandparents.

11. Andhaghaaram (2020)

one movie review in tamil

Translated as “Darkness,” ‘Andhaghaaram’ is a Tamil language supernatural movie that follows three seemingly unrelated individuals in Chennai. The first, Dr. Indran, is a doctor who was shot by a violent patient. Although the doctor survives, the patient massacres his whole family, leading to his license getting suspended. The second, Selvam, is a blind, honest man who lives with a severe kidney problem. However, being versed in the occult, he tries to get paid by capturing spirits in a seemingly haunted house. Finally, the third, Vinod, is a cricket coach who feels that he is to blame for gifting his friend, Pradeep, with a book on the occult, which appears to have given the latter some mental instability. As the movie progresses, it reveals how these three men live in different timelines and how the supernatural, or rather the spirit world, connects them. The rest of the movie is a thrilling watch as it reveals the current timeline and shows how the spirit world tries to use the living to wreak havoc on past wrongdoers. You can stream the movie here .

10. Spyder (2017)

one movie review in tamil

‘Spyder’ is another AR Murugadoss directorial that is made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. Both versions have the Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu in the lead role. ‘Spyder’ also has the surprise characterization of director SJ Surya as Heath Ledger’s Joker-like psychopathic villain, Sudalai. Mahesh Babu plays a cunning intelligence officer who comes in between the deadly scheme of the villain. He has to save the city and its innocent inhabitants from imminent danger before the psychotic serial killer, Sudalai, unleashes horror. Sudalai loves to hear people’s screams of pain and suffering and plots a deadly scheme to stage his death opera. The cat-and-mouse game ensues and reveals the inner demons of both the cop and the villain. You can stream ‘Spyder’ here .

9. Irugapatru (2023)

one movie review in tamil

Directed by Yuvaraj Dhayalan, ‘Irugapatru’ stars Saniya Iyappan, Abarnathi, Shraddha Srinath and Vikram Prabhu. It follows Mithra, a marriage counselor whose tips and tricks for maintaining a good marriage start taking a toll on her own married life. Side by side, we also get to see two other married couples undergoing relationship issues. Amid understanding and misunderstanding, we are provided with a big picture of what it means to be in a relationship wherein both parties are bound by the solemn oath. You can watch the film here .

8. Love Today (2022)

one movie review in tamil

From director Pradeep Ranganathan comes a rom-com starring Ivana, Pradeep Ranganathan, Akshaya Udayakumar, Yogi Babu, and Sathyaraj. The story shows what happens when Nikitha’s father tells her and her boyfriend Uthaman to swap their phones for a day, after which, if they want to get married, they can. Uthaman’s parents are out of the picture here. While both Uthaman and Nikitha are hesitant at first, they swap and eventually unlock each other phones. And that’s when complications, complaints, and confusion creep in. While for us viewers, it is fun, the film makes it clear that it takes one to understand one who is in such a situation. It’s not about cheating but about hiding and/or not telling stuff to the person who you have decided to spend your whole life with. To find out what happens to Nikitha and Uthaman, you can watch the film here .

7. Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal (2020)

one movie review in tamil

The story of two friends who con people by posing as app developers and their misadventures as they find love makes the film a fun watch. All four actors in the movie have been given enough space, which makes the film even more special. ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’ was shot in Delhi, Goa, and Chennai by the much-appreciated debutante director Desingh Periyasamy. The entertainer does not come across as preachy, nor does it hold guilt over any of the characters for what they have done. However, it does leave us with some “life lessons” through this funny yet filled-with-twists story. You may watch the film here .

6. Anjaan (2014)

one movie review in tamil

4. Maharaja (2024)

one movie review in tamil

Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, ‘Maharaja’ stars Vijay Sethupathi as the titular character. He is a single father/barber who ends up on the receiving end of a robbery that deprives him of his “Lakshmi.” What follows is his struggle to get the police to find Lakshmi, whom Maharaja’s daughter, Jyothi, loves. When requests don’t work, he turns to bribes to coerce the police into finding the culprits who have taken Lakshmi. However, what the police do not know is that Maharaja is looking for the culprits for a different reason, one propelled by the thirst for revenge that has resulted from a personal tragedy. Sethupathi’s performance uplifts the film from its regular revenge trope to a strong crime drama. Also co-starring are Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Sachana Namidass, and Natarajan Subramaniam. You can watch ‘Maharaja’ here .

3. Roja (1992)

one movie review in tamil

A cult classic, with an important role played by its songs and score as composed by A. R. Rahman, ‘Roja’ is a romantic thriller directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam. It shows the desperate attempts of a woman (Madhoo) from Tamil Nadu to get the Indian government to rescue her husband (Arvind Swami), a RAW agent, who is kidnapped by Pakistani terrorists. Stellar performances, exemplary direction, and a praiseworthy story make ‘Roja’ one of the best Tamil films of all time. You can watch it here .

2. Sila Samayangalil (2016)

one movie review in tamil

Also known as ‘Sometimes,’ this film narrates an unusual story of seven strangers who go to a clinic to get tested for AIDS and their anxiety as they learn that one of them is infected. It is human nature to be curious and to imagine possibilities or an alternative reality. As each of the characters reveals their story through conversations varying in-depth, we start to empathize with the characters and what they are going through. The film also highlights the stigma that surrounds AIDS and how it affects people, whether they have it or not. This is shown tactfully as the characters do not have inhibitions judging one another, although they are all standing in the same spot. The entire film is set in the waiting lounge of a clinic; therefore, the portrayal of the characters and the strength of storytelling carry the movie on its shoulders. You may watch ‘Sila Samayangalil’ here .

Garcelle Beauvais dishes on new Lifetime movie, Kamala Harris interview

one movie review in tamil

Garcelle Beauvais learned how far a Lifetime movie love scene could go while she was on set filming one.

Beauvais stars in and executive produces “Terry McMillan Presents: Tempted by Love” (premiering Saturday, 8 EDT/PDT and streaming Sunday). In the film, the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star plays Ava, a chef who returns to South Carolina from Europe to care for an ailing aunt (Donna Biscoe). When she lands back in the States, she feels a connection with Luke (Vaughn W. Hebron), the driver who picks her up from the airport, who's 20 years younger.

“At one point, my character is undoing Luke's pants buckle and I'm like, ‘Can we do this for Lifetime?’” Beauvais , 57, recalls with a laugh. “It just felt too racy. It didn't end up making it in the movie. But I think we pushed the envelope, and it was steamy and grown and sexy.”

“For me being a woman of ‘a certain age’ as we'll say, it's really cool to have the hope of finding love at any age,” Beauvais says of the movie’s storyline. “And we touch upon really real things: She's a chef, but she has arthritis, she's going through menopause. We didn't shy away from what people think is the uncomfortable stuff. But I think that's what makes it endearing, because it's real.”

It’s hard not to notice that TV has become more inclusive when it comes to older women, whether it's the success of franchises like Bravo’s “Real Housewives” or ABC’s “The Golden Bachelor.”

“I feel like women are looking better than they've ever been,” Beauvais says. “I feel like we're living longer, we're taking care of ourselves. Why put any stigma on it? It's about the spirit. It's not really about the number.”

Beauvais calls herself “invested” in other reality shows like “Golden Bachelor” but admits that she tries to avoid watching reality TV while filming “Real Housewives.” She just wrapped Season 14. The model and actress notes that she’s grown closer with a few of her castmates, including Sutton Stracke and Kyle Richards.

The actress also recently filmed an interview in Washington with Vice President Kamala Harris a few months ago, before she became the Democratic presidential candidate , that was posted online Aug. 10. Besides joking that the Secret Service had her “freaked out,” she enjoyed her conversation.

“I'm a Democrat, and I was nervous because of all the things that I was hearing about President Biden,” Beauvais admits. “But I'm so happy that she's getting a shot that she deserves. This is America, and we've never had a female president? This is our first (female) VP? I mean, come on, we're behind the times.”

‘The Union’ Review: Old Friends Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry Reunite in a Middling Spy Movie

Playing ex-flames who team up to save the world, the two leads have chemistry, but the movie lacks the personality to make their low-key screwball dynamic worth the hassle.

The Union

Life peaked in high school for Mike McKenna ( Mark Wahlberg ), whereas then-sweetheart Roxanne Hall ( Halle Berry ) managed to escape dead-end New Jersey and travel the world. While he joined the local construction workers union, she joined the Union , a clandestine spy group about whom Roxanne blandly claims, “Half the intelligence community don’t know we exist, and the other half regret finding out.”

Mike’s been drinking at the same bar ever since Roxanne dumped him, hoping she’d walk back into his life. “Is it as you imagined?” Roxanne asks when she does. “I dunno,” he says. “In my head, you were always wearing a bikini.” Just more evidence that the movie was made for 13-year-old boys, even if Wahlberg thinks he’s making this film for the blue-collar guys back home. What else could he mean when his characters says, “It’s nice seeing yourself reflected on-screen”? He’s not drinking martinis in a bespoke tuxedo, but this hardly feels like the representation that Hollywood’s been missing.

Wahlberg plays Mike as if he doesn’t want to do spy stuff, but the movie never gives him a convincing reason to come around. Maybe he would’ve joined the Union if Roxanne had been kidnapped, or if someone he knew (like Lorraine Bracco, wasted as his mom) were in danger, but as written, the character agrees because the actor playing him likes the idea. I suspect Wahlberg is also responsible for enlisting director Julian Farino (who has nearly two dozen “Entourage” episodes to his name). Comedy he can handle, but action doesn’t come naturally to the helmer, and it shows in set-pieces recycled from 007 and “Mission: Impossible” movies.

Once Mike agrees to join, the film compresses a two-week training program (already cut down from six months) into a trailer-length montage, during which he meets other Union members: top boss Tom Brennan (J.K. Simmons), combat pro Frank Preiffer (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), psych evaluator Athena Kim (Alice Lee) and an underused IT guy who calls himself “the Foreman” (Jackie Earle Haley). At times, “The Union” seems to suggest that all of these agents were once honest, hardworking stiffs like Mike — in which case, the organization’s name kinda makes sense — but if that were true, then Roxanne doesn’t fit the profile.

Or maybe she does. The trouble with “The Union” is that neither the film nor its characters have much in the way of personality, to the point it’s not even clear how they feel about one another. To reveal the villain would spoil a mild surprise, though it feels reasonable to complain about the cheap trick of insisting said baddie was once married to Roxanne. When all three characters are together, the movie intends to spark jealousy between Mike and his rival, but mostly it just freezes whatever chemistry had been heating up between the ex-high school sweethearts, as Mike finds himself friend-zoned.

In concept, there’s something inherently appealing about Berry and Wahlberg as action stars. Both have shone in the genre before: It’s hard to top Berry’s intensity in B-movie “Kidnap,” while Wahlberg does best in “Patriots Day” director Peter Berg’s real-hero portraits. In “The Union,” it’s easy to tell they’re being doubled by stunt people half the time, and when they’re not, neither actor looks very convincing — which is to say, instead of entertaining the notion that a Jersey boy can be a spy, it shatters the previously accepted idea that Wahlberg should play one.

'Thangalaan' Movie Review: What's Good, What's Bad; Find Out From Viewers' Words

After the success of two-part Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan', Chiyaan Vikram is back with 'Thangalaan', an action-adventure film, directed by Pa Ranjith of 'Kabali' and 'Madras' fame. The multilingual film is jointly produced by Studio Green, in collaboration with Neelam Productions and Jio Studios.

Apart from Vikram, the film has Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy, Hari Krishnan Anbudurai and Sampath Ram in the cast.

Thangalaan Movie Review What s Good What s Bad Find Out From Viewers Words

The movie has GV Prakash Kumar's music, Selva RK's editing and A Kishor Kumar's cinematography.

Story Set during the British Raj era, the story is about a fierce tribal leader named Thangalaan who is drawn into a battle against an apparent sorceress after assisting a British general in the quest for gold in their village.

Thangalaan and his tribe join forces with Lord Clement, a British General, to locate gold hidden in their village. However, their actions invoke the wrath of Aarathi, a mysterious and feared sorceress. As calamities begin to strike the villagers, fueled by legends that warn, "seeking gold here is seeking death," Thangalaan takes it upon himself to confront Aarathi and end the chaos.

Despite the spreading stories of monsters haunting the land, the British officer remains determined to find the gold. Thangalaan, convinced that Aarathi is the source of the turmoil, sets out to stop her with all his might.

The film is inspired by the real history of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), discovered by the British two centuries ago. The British exploited the land, looting its riches and oppressing the local people.

The movie has garnered a lot of hype. Will it live up to their expectations? Find out here

Rajasekar: #Thangalaan - The scene where women for the first time felt privileged wearing a blouse talks volumes about @beemji standing for the oppressed not just caste but also for the gender! His political inclination towards BR Ambedkar is very much evident. #Thangalaan first half - @beemji once again proves he is a unique voice here in Indian cinema. The way he subtly registers how Buddhism was destroyed here in India, how the land of the working class was once immorally taken away from them by kings in the name of Brahmadeya, Devadana, etc., (Google if you don't know) will be an eye opener for those who have sound ears and eyes that are willing to see the truth. Later from Kings, it's the Zamindars who once again take the lands of the workings class in the form of tax and other illegal means!

@chiyaan is extraordinary 🔥, he has given his heart, soul and everything to the film! @MalavikaM_ is super impressive , not an easy role to play. @parvatweets is as usual exhibited a great performance. @gvprakash proves that he is the best in the business for such metaphorically executed films!

PS: Audiences should come keeping in the mind that they are not going to watch a regular vannila cinema!

G Dhananjeyan: #Thangalaan 🔱 is magical, mystical & powerful in its theme with epic performances by the Team 👌🔥

@chiyaan sir terrific, fantastic and has lived the role. @beemji has created a classic film that will be remembered for long. @gvprakash is outstanding in his songs & BGM.

Solid performances by @parvatweets @MalavikaM_ #Pasupathy sir & #Daniel .

A pride production for @StudioGreen2 A glorious film & a must watch in theatres to experience the magic

sridevi sreedhar: #Thangalaan 3.5/5 Stunning! Don't judge @beemji #Thangalaan, just sit back & enjoy the spectacular making, the grand scale and above all, salute @chiyaan the actor 🙌 He is simply terrific in a physically demanding dual role. It's a film which Tamil cinema can be proud of 👏 @parvatweets is effortlessly convincing and @MalavikaM_ is a revelation. Music by @gvprakash is awesome with #MinikkiMinikki song my pick 🤩 Technically brilliant!

AmuthaBharathi: #Thangalaan [#ABRatings - 3.5/5]

- Fairly Good First half followed by an okish second half 🤝 - Action blocks are made quite impressive & liked the scenes involving malavika👌 - #ChiyaanVikram performance & #GVPrakash music are the 2 strong pillars of the movie 🔥🔥 - Slow narration, few flat scenes & predictable narration are the drawbacks !! - PaRanjith has delivered an excellent making 👏

Overall a Decent to Above Average attempt, which definitely can be watched for its unique experience

Siddarth Srinivas: #Thangalaan Interval: Good so far. The premise from Ranjith is so interesting that it holds in the tempo despite some pacing inconsistencies and forced elements. Full marks to Chiyaan Vikram and GVP - they have absolutely rocked. Action sequences 🔥👌

Prashanth Rangaswamy: The only problem so far - VFX . You guys cannot even VFX a peacock properly ? Why run a business then ? #Thangalaan

Roger Mani: #Thangalaan @chiyaan What an Acting sir ... Totally deserves an Oscar award 🫸🫷 @beemji Brilliant direction 🫡 @gvprakash your songs and BGM are the main pillars of the movie 😎🔥 @StudioGreen2 Thank you for making such a wonderful movie. Salute 🫡 Thangalaan - #GOLD

Narasimha Varman: #Thangalaan the film lacks a coherent story, unfortunately chiyaan's performance may go in vain. a Good score from GV Prakash

No Name: #Thangalaan has a terrific premise but the unfocused writing and weak filmmaking, along with the worst possible VFX, make this a dull watch. Almost no department brings their A-game to the film. One of the biggest disappointments of this year for me.

Muthu gautham: #Thangalaan [4/5] - Fairly Good First half followed by an okish second half 🤝 - Action blocks are made quite impressive & liked the scenes involving malavika👌 - #ChiyaanVikram performance & #GVPrakash music are the 2 strong pillars of the movie

Bala: #Thangalaan OMG this is a mind-blowing film from Pa Ranjith. Spectacular. Bloody good so far. Ufff. So many goosebump moments. Ranjith has outdone himself

Lets X OTT CINEMA: #THANGALAAN So far the Good Film in 2024 for KW 👏 @chiyaan deserves a awards for his acting ; An absolute BANGER from @gvprakash 🔥 All Kudos goes to @beemji sir , as usual your direction was top notch . Second Half worked out well ; Good Screenplay #Thangalaan First Half : Terificcc 🏆🏆🏆🏆 Pure Goosebumps 🤯🔥 Chiyaan Performace was so surprising , @gvprakash the Back Bone of the Film 🔥 , Visuals are really good ; Brilliant Making by @beemji - A Chiyan Sambvam ❤️‍🔥

John: Just first 20 minutes - so many triggering points for Bs. Pa Ranjith at it again as expected. #Thangalaan

Harish N S: #ThangalaanReview worked for me! 🙌 The first half is absolutely stellar with gripping storytelling and top-notch performances, especially by Parvati and Chiyaan Vikram-take a bow! 🙇 surprising performance from Malavika 👍 The second half kicks off with goosebumps and maintains the momentum, though a few elements towards the climax didn't quite land for me. However, the ending wraps up decently. GV Prakash's BGM and songs are on another level-he really rocked it! Overall, it's a brave attempt with a new genre, delivering spine-chilling moments in several places. Definitely worth a watch!

karambakkattaan: Chiyaaan sir kannu kalangiruchu!! 🥺🔥🔥⚡ First half is just a Lit, Its a Slow Burner and its Burned, Now waiting for 2nd half 🔥 As the words of everyone, Interval Block is 🔥🥺. @gvprakash sir neenga Manushane illaa, u r Hossam sir 🔥🥺

Hardik: #Thangalaan First Half - Disappointing so far👎 * Except Vikram- other artists performances are lackluster and fail to engage. * GV Prakash Kumar's background score is underwhelming and doesn't add to the movie's atmosphere. * The build-up to the interval is slow.

Umair Sandhu: First Review #Thangalaan : Unbelievable! What a deadly performance by #ChiyaanVikram ! #Vikram gave National Award 🥇 winning performance. Tamil fans will love this flick. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

STR_off: #Thangalaan Review: First Half: vikram nadipu vera level and Malavika acting also very nice💥 Second Half: vikram body language and fights, screen presence 💥 Songs: minikii song super ❤️ GV nice background music very emotional 😭 it's connected 👍 overall worth the movie 💥

‘Alien: Romulus’ Review: Go Ahead, Scream (No One Can Hear You)

The seventh installment of the series centers on Rain (Cailee Spaeny), a contract worker in an outer-space mining colony, and her friend Andy (David Jonsson), an android.

A woman with a gun stands in front of an android who holds her shoulder. They are on a space station.

By Manohla Dargis

Some movie sequels take a series in new directions, adding original ideas, new characters, different approaches and, at times, heft and myth. Other sequels are more like filler. They help plug the spaces between movies and keep the franchise’s brand in the public’s imagination, all while trying to make some cash. The newest “Alien” movie, “Alien: Romulus,” the seventh installment in this storied, apparently inexhaustible cycle of films, is perfectly adequate filler.

Since Ridley Scott’s “Alien” burst into gripping, gruesome life in 1979, the series has generated hits and misses, tankers of acidic slobber and a sizable body count. The franchise turned Sigourney Weaver into an icon and gave David Fincher his start as a film director. As the movies piled up, they also reminded you that the original “Alien” is a masterpiece and that even the lesser follow-ups that Scott directed, “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” have their virtues, among them striking visuals, filmmaking intelligence, a curiosity about the cosmos, and a twinned appreciation for the mystery of life and the inevitability of death.

“Alien: Romulus” is a nuts-and-bolts action-adventure horror story with boos and splatter. It doesn’t have much on its mind but it has some good jump scares along with a disappointingly bland heroine, a sympathetic android and the usual collection of disposable characters who are unduly killed by slavering, rampaging extraterrestrials. In series terms, the events in “Romulus” take place between those in “Alien” and those in the second film, “Aliens.” Written and directed by James Cameron, and crowded with big guns and bulging biceps, “Aliens” is largely notable for its swaggering action sequences that have become de rigueur in the series and for giving Weaver’s Ripley a muscular makeover while turning her into a surrogate mom.

Directed by Fede Álvarez (“ Don’t Breathe ”), who shares script credit with Rodo Sayagues, “Romulus” tells a familiar, half-baked story of adversity, gritty perseverance, quick thinking and a drag-down fight for survival. It centers on Rain (Cailee Spaeny), a 20-something contract worker in a grim outer-space mining colony. There, along with Andy (David Jonsson), a glitchy android that she loves and calls her brother, Rain yearns to leave the sunless planet and the punishing conditions that condemned both her parents to early deaths. She soon gets her chance when some other friends share that they’re planning an escape in an abandoned space station that has conveniently drifted above their planet.

Álvarez gets through this setup economically, and it isn’t long before Rain and company are creeping through the station’s eerily empty corridors, exploring its topsy-turvy rooms and pondering its not particularly mysterious mysteries. (Álvarez spends a lot of time showing off his sets, which are more engaging than the writing.) Spaeny, who played Priscilla Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” is an appealing performer — her youth and slight frame deceptively suggest near-childlike vulnerability — and you’re on Rain’s side straightaway. What keeps you rooted there is largely a matter of film-going habit and franchise familiarity: She’s the heroine and Ripley’s symbolic heir, after all, and the monsters are coming.
