Use of the forms 'a' and 'an'

Use of the forms 'a' and 'an'If a word starts with a consonant sound, we should use 'a.' If a word starts with a vowel sound, we should use 'an.' When in doubt, say the word out loud and listen for the sound at the beginning. If it sounds like a consonant, use 'a.' If it sounds like a vowel, use 'an.' This handy worksheet asks students to complete the sentences by writing 'a' or 'an'. Encourage Year 3 students to practise using 'a' and 'an' in their writing and speaking, and to ask for help when they're not sure which one to use.

Literacy is still a daily lesson in Year 3, made up of:

Reading in Year 3 – your child will:

• apply their growing knowledge of root words , prefixes and suffixes to read aloud and understand the meaning of new words they meet

• re-tell stories orally
• perform poems and play scripts , showing understanding through intonation and action
• infer characters' feelings though their actions, justifying their inference with evidence

Children should be allowed to choose a book at school to take home with them to read. You may be given an exercise book to write your comments in when you read with them. Children will also read with their teacher in groups once a week (this is called guided reading ).  

Try this at home:

• Keep reading together: even if your child is fluent, you can share stories and talk about themes
• Branch out – children develop favourite authors or themes at this age, but it’s good to broaden their choices by offering alternatives. Ask at your local library for ideas for new authors to try
• Word puzzles can be fun – encourage them to try a simple wordsearch

Writing in Year 3 – your child will:

• understand how to spell words with a variety of prefixes and suffixes
• become more confident in joining their handwriting, increasing its legibility and quality
• use a wider range of connectives (when, before, after, while, so, because)
• start using inverted commas to punctuate speech
• create settings, characters and plot in narratives using a range of descriptive language
• use organisational devices such as bullet points and sub-headings
• assess and improve their writing
• Play ‘hangman’ – it’s a simple game but it reinforces spelling and letters
• Let your child send an email or help them find a penpal – typing a letter to a friend or relative is good spelling and keyboard practice
• Make up stories together – gather together some favourite toys and make up an adventure for them (put your child in the story, too)

Year 3 English Homework

For many parents, homework is the only picture they get of what their child does at school. For this reason, Hamilton have put a great deal of effort into writing suitable, fun and home-friendly activities for children and parents to share together. Children will benefit and so will parents and teachers!

The activities rehearse core literacy skills that you may wish children to practise or keep on the boil. Read our English homework blog for more advice about using them.

Practise spelling familiar and unfamiliar words. Who can spell the longest words and earn the most points in a fun letter game? (2 sheets).

Practise creating alphabetical lists of items from an untidy cupboard or from under their beds. Note what happens in the list when two words begin with the same letter.

Write a short playscript based on a conversation with an adult about being bored. Not the child, but the adult!

Draw and label a picture of themselves wearing their favourite clothes. Discuss how what someone wears can give clues to their personality.

Write a short review of their favourite funny book. Practise writing in complete sentences. Talk about books with a partner.

Learn to form letters correctly in writing.

Use their imagination to think of superpowers for family and friends. Write a short description to explain what power they chose and why.

Write a short letter to persuade parents/carers to ban a food children dislike from the house.

Start to become familiar with prefixes by playing a prefix dice game (2 pages)

Use imagination to draw and then write a short description of their special secret hideaway. Practise thinking, saying and then writing sentences down.

Study words with silent letters from their reading book. Put the words into groups according to the silent letter.

Write a short description of their favourite thing to do in the summer holidays. Note that someone else will be reading their writing so they need to check for sense and handwriting.

Have fun writing a new rhyme based on the same pattern a 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star',eg. 'Wriggle, wriggle little worm'.
