As part of the requirements for graduate level degrees, students must complete a thesis for a Master's degree and/or dissertation for a Ph.D. Dissertations and theses are submitted to the academic department and the Graduate College and are made available through the University Library. Since 2010, all theses and dissertations are electronically deposited into IDEALS, the Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship, the University's open repository of scholarly content.
ProQuest Dissertations is a comprehensive collection of citations to dissertations and theses worldwide from 1861 to the present day. Full text PDFs are available for many Ph.D. dissertations added since 1997 and some older graduate works.

Print Dissertations &Theses
Prior to 2010, print format dissertations and theses were bound and cataloged separately for the Grainger Engineering Library. Prior to 1983, each thesis was shelved by a call number assigned by subject headings. To locate them, search the online catalog for the author’s last name, title word(s) if known, and “theses” and the year granted as subject term(s).
Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering dissertations and theses granted from 1985 to 1999 were assigned Q.629.1Ta, followed by the 2-number year, followed by starting letters from the author’s last name. (Example: A 1991 thesis by M. Doyle would be Q.629.1Ta91D). Dissertations and theses granted from 2000 to present were assigned Q.629.1Tb, followed by the 2-number year, followed by starting letters from the author’s last name. (Example: A 2006 thesis by H. Dewey would be Q.629.1Tb06De).

Industrial Design Masters Theses
The Master of Industrial Design program explores design as a vehicle for addressing social, cultural, environmental and other concerns, recognizing that design is not simply a professional service, but rather a way of connecting individual interests and values with a social framework. Students with undergraduate degrees in other fields or with limited design experience are invited to enter the program during Wintersession as a means of preparing to begin the two-year master’s program the following fall.
ID covers a broad range of fields, from product and furniture explorations to design for aerospace and medical applications. Graduate students work independently under the guidance of a faculty advisor and thesis committee, and present their final work verbally, visually and in writing. They also participate in the RISD Graduate Thesis Exhibition , a large-scale public show held annually.
“Graduate candidates in ID don’t necessarily need an undergraduate degree in the field, but they do need strong visual communication skills. For those without an ID background, learning CAD, drawing and model making can be beneficial, and taking a general product design course can provide insight into the design process. Materials-based courses in a medium such as metal, glass, textiles, ceramics or wood also provide a good basis for work in ID.” - Andy Law, Graduate Program Director

Engineering Dissertation Topics
A dissertation (or a final year project report) is a comprehensive technical report of the research work carried out. A dissertation must present some new, original concepts that lead to further research. The core area of a dissertation consists of a hypothesis (or a research question) upon which an investigation is conducted and, in most cases, inevitably leads to further research. A dissertation must be focused, concise and must address the research topics at every level. Also, along with research, a dissertation is expected to present complete evidence of research work in the form of research methods. Sometimes it’s hard to even know where to start. Herein, many engineering research areas, currently being sought after in the industry and academia, are suggested, including electronics, sensors technology, environmental engineering, supply chain engineering, computer science engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering, to help you start your research.

WEST ORANGE, N.J. (WABC) -- Students at West Orange High School in New Jersey got hands-on engineering experience this semester while also helping an injured dog.
The dog, named Cody, was rescued from Puerto Rico.
"They found him out on the street. They had his leg removed because it couldn't be saved," the dog's owner, Karen Clark said.
Clark says Cody gets around just fine on his three legs, but as he ages, arthritis can become an issue.
"The majority of the weight is on the front legs. So if we can give his front-end a little bit of a rest maybe that'll delay the arthritis a little bit," Clark said.
That's where the West Orange High Engineering students come in.
The company 3D Pets is giving them hands on experience, building cody's prosthetic.
Their teacher has had this class since their freshman year.
"They're doing really good. Sometimes they're like we're not good enough. And I'm like you can do this," teacher Catherine Gardner said.
3D Pets founders were STEM students back in high school. They now make prosthetics for pets all over the world and wanted to touch the next generation.
"I do plan on going into either industrial or mechanical engineering and I might be working with projects like this, such as, 3D designing things, 3D designing prosthetics," student Jeremiah Latimer said.
Gardner says more than half of the class have been accepted into college engineering programs.
"Most of them are planning to go on into engineering," Gardner said as she wiped away tears. "I'm just so proud of them."
Cody will be fitted with his prosthetic in about five weeks.
