Frequently asked questions about high school logos

Creating the perfect logo for high school with freelogodesign is easy, but just in case, here are some answers to questions you may have.

Whether you are an expert or not, here are some steps to follow that will help you create a high school logo. First, analyze your business and products. What are your strengths, weaknesses, and values? Never forget that you are creating a high school logo for your business, not for a competitor. Then, think about your brand image by choosing a logotype, color palette, and font that represent your business well.

Finding the perfect icon when creating a high school logo is essential, especially if you decide to make a combination mark or emblem logo. There are thousands of available icons on FreeLogoDesign to help you. When creating your high school logo with our logo maker, click on the Add an icon button to begin searching. Try different icons until you find the one that meets your needs.

Yes! As the name suggests, you can create a free high school logo with FreeLogoDesign’s logo maker. You will have access to all the logo templates (we have more than 2000!) and features to create your logo. Your free high school logo will be in a PNG format, 200 x 200 px. If you need high resolution or vector files, please note that you can also purchase one of our premium plans or add-ons: business card templates, brand guide, email signature, invoices.

What should be the main color of your new logo? Choosing the right colors for your high school logo can be challenging. Your brand image components of a logo are significant as they could impact the first impression someone has of your business. Selecting the right colors can make a huge difference in how people perceive your brand since every color has a specific meaning. People only need a few milliseconds to have an opinion on your business when they look at your high school logo. You must then ensure that your logo stands out from the competition while remaining representative of your field and values. If you want to know more and make an informed choice, take a look at FreeLogoDesign’s page on the meaning of the colors.

Don't wait! Create your own logo now!

Essential Question

What is a logo, what are the elements of effective logo design, and how have musicians and bands used logos to brand themselves?

In 1969, Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones contacted the London Royal College of Art in search of a student who might design the poster for the band’s upcoming tour. Graduate student John Pasche took the job. Pasche’s design so impressed the band that Jagger enlisted him to create a logo for the record label they were preparing to launch.

In 1970, Pasche spent a week developing the Rolling Stones logo, considering what image might best reflect the band’s status as the “bad boys” of Rock and Roll. While designing the logo, Jagger showed Pasche an image of the open-mouthed, red-tongued goddess Kali, a Hindu deity associated with sexuality and violence. While this might have played a part in inspiring the logo, Pasche later recalled feeling equally transfixed by the facial features of Mick Jagger himself. “Face to face with him,” said Pasche in a 2008 Rolling Stone magazine interview, “the first thing you were aware of was the size of his lips and his mouth.”

A preliminary, one-inch version of Pasche’s design was sent to Craig Braun, who was developing the cover to the band’s upcoming release, Sticky Fingers. Braun and his associate designers took Pasche’s initial design and made some modifications, before enlarging the logo to cover the entire inside cover of the album.

Whether inspired more by the rictus of Kali or Jagger, Pasche and Braun’s design, “The Tongue,” was a success. It is still used by the Rolling Stones almost fifty years later.

“The Tongue,” wild though it may be, followed certain basic principles of design. Pasche wanted the logo to represent the spirit of the band in a manner that could be, “easily reproduced and…stand the test of time.” A representative of the London Victoria and Albert Museum, who purchased the original “Tongue” artwork for $92,500 in 2008, described the logo as “one of the first examples of a group using branding and…arguably the world’s most famous rock logo.”

During the pre-internet era of print, logos such as “The Tongue” served several important purposes. Most fans discovered music through the radio, from which they received no images. Until MTV launched in 1981, listeners either saw a band in person, or on the pages of print media, where space was limited. A clear, memorable logo could leap from the page and lodge itself in a fan’s psyche. A well designed logo often could be easily reproduced by fans–on notebooks, desks, lockers, clothing, even human skin. In the era before the internet and one-click sharing, a good logo “went viral” via a pen and the closest canvas, exposing bands to new audiences in a way paid advertising never could.

In this lesson, students explore band logos as examples of graphic design, and consider how logos derive meaning through association with the bands they symbolize. Guided by a handout that introduces Five Principles of Effective Logo Design, students study images of band logos and analyze their effectiveness. Armed with a new sense of what might make logos effective, students then design logos for their own fictitious, or real, bands.

Upon completion of this lesson, students will:

  • What the meaning and function of a logo is
  • Basic principles of semiotics and associations
  • Principles of effective logo design
  • Through the analysis of images and through group discussion, students will be able to identify and understand principles of effective logo design, and apply their knowledge by designing their own logos.

logo design assignment high school

  • What does this logo represent?
  • Where might you see it?
  • Does Batman appear in just one place, or many? Does his logo change? (Students will likely note that Batman is in comics, TV shows, movies, and elsewhere, but his logo remains largely the same throughout.)
  • Why do you think the Batman logo stays roughly the same regardless of the medium in which the character appears, or the actor who plays the character?
  • Display the Gallery Walk 1 images around the classroom (if desired, teachers may also display logos from the Supplemental Handout – Additional Logos ). Break students into groups and distribute one copy of Handout 1 –  Gallery Walk 1 Questions to each group. Have students study each of the images, and then record their group’s answers on the handout. Discuss their answers as a class.
  • Distribute Handout 2 – 5 Principles of Effective Logo Design and read it aloud as a class.
  • Have students return to their groups. Display the Gallery Walk 2 images throughout the classroom, while keeping on display the images from Gallery Walk 1. Distribute Handout 3 – Gallery Walk 2 Questions to each group, and have students analyze the logos using the 5 Principles of Effective Logo Design. Then, allow each group to share their answer to one of the questions.
  • Pass out one copy of Handout 4 – Design Your Own Logo to each student. Upon completion, have students share with the class their band’s identity and their custom logo.

Summary Activity:

  • In what way are logos helpful in developing a group’s image?
  • In your own life, can you recall a time when a logo made you interested in looking into a brand or band that you otherwise wouldn’t have? What was the logo, and why did it appeal to you?
  • What band/product logo do you find works especially well in representing the product it is selling? Does that logo adhere to the principles of effective logo design?

Canva Projects for Digital Art Lessons in Middle & High School Art

Canva Projects for Digital Art Lessons in Middle & High School Art

If you haven’t discovered the amazing world of Canva yet, it’s time! I have spent the last year developing Canva design projects to introduce design concepts to middle school art or high school art students. It’s a free tool and online program, perfect for Chromebooks, iPads, and similar. This graphic design tool can be used with any experience level because it is incredibly easy to work with. Check out six creative projects for Canva below for ideas to incorporate into your art class.

VISION BOARD CANVA PROJECTS

Canva Projects for Digital Art Lessons in Middle & High School Art

A great introduction to Canva is a vision board project. Students dive into aesthetics and outline what their artistic likes and dislikes are. For this art assignment, students select a collage base and add their own images reflecting their aesthetic. They are encouraged to change the simple template from Canva to make the design their own.

This Canva project only takes a few days. It’s a great introduction to design, art philosophy, and layout design. This is perfect for any middle school art or high school art course. If you want to hit the easy button, grab this digital art lesson  here . You get everything you need to teach your students how to make these digital photo collages!

LOGO DESIGN PROJECT

Canva Projects for Digital Art Lessons in Middle & High School Art

My newest project focuses on developing a logo using Canva. Once again, Canva makes this process easy by providing lots of templates for students to customize. This is a great way to introduce design concepts to students since they aren’t faced with a blank page. With Canva, they have a template to jump off from.

You can grab the lesson pack for this on my website  here  or on my TPT  here . Get a digital art lesson plan, Canva how-to activity, research sheets, presentation, rubric, and more.

BUSINESS CARD CANVA PROJECTS

Canva Projects for Digital Art Lessons in Middle & High School Art

This project pack combines multiple Canva projects into one. With this project, students develop a quick logo and apply it to a business card and brochure for a hypothetical business. Through Canva they are able to easily load their designs and apply them to a business card template and a brochure template. You can check out this project on my TPT  here . You can also get this project as a part of my intro to design curriculum  here .

MOVIE POSTER REDESIGN

logo design assignment high school

This graphic design project has quickly become one of my most popular assignments. Students take a movie poster and redesign it using Canva. In my project pack, students research movie posters, learn the history of posters, and critically think about how to include important information and visuals. Check out this project on TPT  here .

CAMPAIGN POSTER PROJECT

logo design assignment high school

It seems like campaigns are endless in the US. The last midterm election was in full swing when I was inspired to create this digital art lesson.

Building off of the movie poster redesign, students create another poster focused on them. They must create a campaign poster for a hypothetical race. Students develop a style, take a picture of themselves, and select an issue that is important to them. This is turned into a slogan and campaign poster. Once again, they start with the templates in Canva but edit them to make them their own unique design. Check out this lesson  here .

GIF CANVA PROJECTS

This GIF project is perfect for middle school art or high school art students. Using a combination of Photoshop, Pixlr, or hand-drawn images, they create their own GIF in Canva. This project was recently revamped from using an old GIF compilation website to a much simpler compilation process in Canva. Check it out  here . You can also get this project when you purchase my drawing curriculum  here.

Get all of these projects with my 6 Canva projects pack here .

Thanks for checking out these fun projects that use Canva, more to come in the future. These projects are a fun way to get students interested in graphic design while they practice digital design elements. If you are looking for more graphic design or digital design projects for your middle or high school art students, check out more  here  or on my TPT  here . Be on the lookout for my Design II curriculum, slated to be released this spring! Thanks for stopping by, don’t forget to follow me on  Instagram  and  TikTok  for weekly visual journal demos. Until next time!

Midtown High School

Visual Identity & Brand

The Assignment

Letter from dr. bockman.

bockman.jpg

December 2020

Dear Grady High School Community:

Our high school has been a cornerstone institution in Atlanta since 1872.  It has changed its identity before, as the city evolved to reflect new concepts of inclusion and diversity.

It is now time to effect change again.

As you are all aware, in Fall 2020, the Board of Education of Atlanta Public Schools voted to change our name from Henry W. Grady High School to Midtown High School.  This change will go into effect on June 1, 2021.

This is an exciting period as we prepare for this change and develop our logo and visual identity.  The decisions made in the next four months may be in effect decades in the future.  Our intention is for our logo to be authentic, distinctive and recognizable, while also serving a variety of functional needs, from digital platforms to signage to pens.  While we will remain the “Knights” and retain a shade of red as our school color, many other creative decisions need to be made.

The process between now and June is multi-phased.

1.   Assess.  Determine needs, processes and timeline.

2.  Discover.  Conduct listening sessions about our brand tone and logo needs.

3.  Define.  Review feedback and articulate clear creative direction.

4.  Create.  Develop concepts, primary logos, configurations and unit-level logos.

5.  Activate.  Create material with our logo, develop guidelines, train our community.

In January and February 2021 we will begin the “Discovery” process and conduct virtual listening sessions.  During these sessions we will explore the attributes that you believe Midtown High School possesses; these insights will guide the creative direction of the initial logo concepts.  The dates and times of the listening sessions will be made available soon.

In addition, we are collecting information about the way various team members will be using a new logo in their areas.  Please consider sharing information on these two surveys:

Areas of Midtown High School Requiring a New Logo - click here

Functional Logo Needs for Midtown High School  - click here

We look forward to this being an outstanding, real-world learning process for our students.  Our AP Art students are already deeply engaged in creative exploration.

Finally, I would like to thank John Brandhorst, our Department Chair of the Fine Arts Department.  He has been working closely with colleagues at Atlanta Public Schools, faculty, staff and community volunteers.

Thank you for joining in this process.  Please stay tuned for additional information in the future.

The Creative Brief

Midtown High School

Rebranding Creative Brief

Background:

“Individually we are different; together we are Midtown High School.”

Our mantra since 2001 celebrates what makes Midtown High School unique - a learning environment that leverages the various interests and diverse life experiences of its teachers, students, and administrators. It's “a high-performing school where educators inspire, families engage and students love to learn”.

Located at the heart of the city, Midtown High School is “in the middle of everything.” Adjacent to the Rainbow Crosswalks and across the street from Piedmont Park , Midtown High School is at the center of Atlanta, with an urban home that brings together neighborhoods from Old Fourth Ward to Virginia- Highland to Midtown to Morningside to Home Park and celebrates the diverse communities it honorably serves.

At Midtown High School, you’ll find award winning programs from Robotics to Speech/Debate to Strings/Choir, an impressive 90+% 4-year graduation rate, and average ACT/SAT scores that exceed both the Georgia and national student averages. In 2020 alone, students received over $16.5M in scholarships, had double the average acceptance rate at Georgia Tech (45% vs. 22%) , and acceptances to many of the world’s most respected colleges.

While “Knights” traditionally hail from medieval times, Midtown’s modern warriors are our present and future cultural leaders inspired by today’s diverse heroes -  John D. Lewis , King T’Challa , Jimmy Carter , Stacey Abrams,  Ruth Bader Ginsburg , Marsha P. Johnson , Lizzo , and Bill Gates .

While the mantra and academic rigor will carry forward, the Board of Education of Atlanta Public Schools voted to change the name from Henry W. Grady High School to Midtown High School. This change will go into effect June 1, 2021. When the name changes, a new brand identity will be necessary.

Audience:

Students - Midtown HIgh School is fortunate to have a diverse population* with a wide variety of passions and interests. When the 1,500 Midtown students aren’t studying, they participate in a broad range of extra curriculars from sports to drama and actively contribute to their communities. The students care about the school’s name and logo, because in one student’s words, “they represent us. When other people see you wearing your school’s shirt, they know where you’re from… they know where you go to school. I want that to be a strong representation of our unique culture”.

Additionally, the students' lives are full of the universal, timeless characteristics of high school students.  They are busy becoming adults - navigating their social circles, assuming more responsibility in their homes, and exploring potential college and/or career interests.

*Asian - 3%, Black - 38%, Hispanic - 8%, Multi-Ethnic - 4%, White - 47%

Atlanta Public Schools / Midtown High School Staff - when the teachers and Midtown/APS administrators are a major part of the strength of the community. As diverse as the students, the staff share their areas of knowledge and offer their unwavering guidance to help positively shape the students’ lives. They are also invested in having a school name and logo that celebrates what makes Midtown High School distinct.

Objective:

Position Midtown High School as a leading model for grades 9-12 learning and achievement.

Strategy:

Communicate what makes Midtown High School unique, its centrality. This theme emerged from the multiple student and administration listening sessions.

cen·tral·i·ty

/senˈtralədē/

1.  the quality or fact of being in the middle of somewhere or something

2. the quality of being essential or of the greatest importance

Midtown High School aptly exhibits these multiple definitions - it is located at the city center, is a meeting point for diverse neighborhoods, and offers the critical lessons/skills that become central to the lives of its students.

The Assignment :

Develop a visual identity to include:

A single unifying creative concept that has two distinct logo executions, 1) academic logo and 2) sports/spirit logo. See here for a list of college/university examples

Font & color choice

Executions must be applicable for, but not limited to, the following:

School sign(s) and environmental graphics

School office materials (e.g., stationery, invoices, name tags, PPTX template)

Digital  applications (e.g., website, web banners, screen buttons, social media)

Considerations:

Ability to reproduce the logo in a range of sizes and physical/digital formats (e.g., merchandise - pencils, cups, signs, website, etc.). Solid, simple, bold designs will reproduce most easily. Detailed, intricate designs will not reproduce well across the various needs.

The logo must be developed for a horizontal and vertical format.

A full visual identity system will be developed from the chosen logo to represent the many academic units, student groups and individual teams with an appropriate lock-up.

Mandatories:

Word mark / logo should spell out “Midtown High School”

Knights remain the school mascot

Color - Pantone 201C - Stanford Red (may recommend a different color but must be close to this red)

Logo cannot be more than three colors including white and must be able to reproduce as one color and black/white versions

Primary mark/logo can be a proprietary font. Secondary font(s) must be a free to use

The Guiding Principles

At its core, our visual identity is our reputation. It represents who we are as a school and stands for our aspirational goals and ideals. It embodies our values as perceived by the general public, our students, our faculty and staff, our alumni and our friends. The following principles will guide us through the process.

Distinctive &

The visual identity must represent the unique spirit, people and positive traditions of an institution.

It is important to scan the landscape to ensure it is bold and distinct among a very crowded set of peers and competitors.

A full inventory of all needs must guide the creative approach.  The common and future uses must guide the simplicity/complexity of design.

Digital use and environmental graphics are of greater priority in design.

Logos have multiple configurations (horiz, vert, circular) and color combinations (full color, one-color, knock-out)

Recognizable

Color complexity is critical and must be consistent in all uses and application.  Prepare for 3-color process.  Decisions with licensing & manufactures in consideration is important.

Proprietary typography in logo improves recognition and awareness.  Secondary fonts should be based on common options so they are convenient and free.

The visual identity must be versatile enough to be used by all units (academic departments, clubs & associations, athletic teams, alumni groups)

Visual elements can emerge from the visual identity ie. shield shape, i-bars, window frame

Creating with flexibility in the beginning will reduce costs over time as groups have additional needs

The Process

The approach strikes a balance between exploration, strategy and expression. To accomplish the project’s goals and objectives, design solutions are created by applying an informed, strategic, collaborative, and iterative process.

Graphic Design Lessons - A Short History of Logo Design

A logo is a sign, symbol, trademark or badge which conveys the identity or ownership of a product, company, campaign or concept in a memorable way.

MILTON GLASER (b.1929) 'I Love New York', 1977

A logo is a sign, symbol, trademark or badge that conveys the identity or ownership of a product, company, campaign or concept in as memorable a way as possible.

How are logos used?

A logo can be used in many different forms, sizes and contexts. For example, the logo for a hotel could be printed on a letterhead or menu, embroidered onto a napkin or jacket, embossed on metal cutlery or illuminated as a huge neon sign on the side of the building.

What are the basic qualities of a good logo?

A logo should be simple so that it retains its clarity of design in different contexts. If it is too complicated, its details may be lost when it is reduced in scale. Also, a simple logo design is faster to read, easier to remember and consequently more instantly identifiable. The 'I Love New York' logo by Milton Glaser, one of the most reproduced logos ever, illustrates most of these basic qualities.

What is the main function of a logo?

A logo should convey an immediate and memorable identity and must connect with its target audience in a positive manner.

Logo Design - A Symbol of Faith

SYMBOLS OF FAITH above: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism below: Sikhism, Taoism, Judaism, Islam

H ow have logos evolved?

Logos have been around in one form or another for several thousand years. The Ancient Egyptians are known to have branded domestic animals with hieroglyphs to mark their ownership. The Ancient Romans and Greeks marked their pottery to identify the manufacturer. The great faiths of the world have all adopted symbols for ease of recognition.

Logo Design - Identifying the Brand

HERALDIC DESIGNS

Royal Coat of Arms of the UK

F rom the 12th century onwards through medieval times, heraldic designs (coats of arms) were used to identify the status and property of the nobility.

HERALDIC DESIGNS

Alpha Romeo Logo and the Visconti Coat of Arms

T he heraldic tradition continues to this day in logo design. The Alfa Romeo logo is the official branding of A.L.F.A (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) which is designed to represent the family coat of arms of the Visconti, one of the most influential and respected families of Milan.

Logo Design - A Mark of Quality

Gold HALLMARKS

18 ct Gold Hallmarks from the London Assay Office

I n general, the most common early logos were trademarks signifying the origin or quality of a craftsman's product. Hallmarks, which testify to the quality of precious metals, are a good example of this practice. The leopard's head has been the hallmark of the Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office since 1300.

Logo Design - Early 20th Century Vocabulary

CIGARETTE ADVERTISING

A t the start of the 20th century with the introduction of color printing and the birth of the advertising industry, logo designs tended to use a vocabulary of national, nautical, heraldic, and agricultural images. The public readily understood the meaning of these symbols. National and heraldic symbols (crowns, flags and coats of arms) meant dignity and status while nautical, natural and agricultural symbols (seascapes, life buoys, birds, wheat stalks and farm animals) represented purity and freshness.

CIGARETTE ADVERTISING

U nlike today, there was no concept of targeted advertising and designers freely used all these symbols to advertise any product. Cigarettes for example, before we understood their association with lung disease and cancer, used the full symbolic vocabulary to make their merchandise more 'appealing'.

Logo Design - Less is More

The Shell Logo (1900-2020)

O ver the last century, our lifestyles gradually became more complex. Conversely, the design of logos became simpler for ease and speed of recognition in a faster world. The evolution of the Shell Logo throughout the 20th century clearly demonstrates this effect. The 1971 version, which was designed by Raymond Loewy and is still in use, has dropped its brand name as 'shell' is an English word that gets lost in translation in an international market. In short, the art of logo design illustrates the design concept "Less is More" better than any other graphic form.

Logos, as we know them today, are intelligent graphic images that are carefully designed to impart their concepts, both consciously and sub-consciously, for immediate recognition by a specific target audience.

In a notable showcase of academic excellence and scholarly engagement, students from the Schar School of Policy and Government made a significant impact at the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) Conference held in Chicago earlier this month. Despite its regional designation, the conference attracted some 5,000 attendees, solidifying its status as a premier national event in the field of political science.

Among the participants were two undergraduate and eight doctoral students from the Schar School, who distinguished themselves through their presentations of papers and posters. Their topics spanned a wide range of political science disciplines, reflecting the depth and diversity of research being conducted at the institution.

The presentations covered areas such as public perception of political events, the impact of Supreme Court rulings, the analysis of political disloyalty, community sponsorship in resettlement, and the intricate dynamics of global politics, among others.

The students' contributions were not only well-received but also highlighted their professional demeanor, analytical prowess, and engaging presentation skills. Their work garnered positive feedback throughout the weekend-long event, demonstrating the high caliber of mentorship and academic preparation they received at the Schar School.

In the days prior to the conference, student participants were invited to an afternoon workshop where several of their professors, experienced hands at presenting difficult material to a live audience, coached them during practice sessions. The fine-tuning paid off.

The Schar School representatives were “professional, poised, curious, and engaging,” said Associate Professor Jennifer N. Victor . “[They were] doing their best and getting good feedback on their work. I was proud to be their professor, mentor, and colleague at this important national political science conference.”

As the MPSA Conference continues to be a pivotal event for political science scholars nationwide, the participation of Schar School students not only enhances their own academic profiles but also elevates the school's reputation as a hub for innovative research and scholarly excellence.
