Wvu medicine camden clark celebrates silver beacon award.

PARKERSBURG — The WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center received a national award as it kicks off Hospital Appreciation Week.

The hospital earned the national silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) within both its Cardiovascular Intensive Care (CVICU) and Intensive Care Units (ICU).

The award was given for exceptional patient care and its efforts to foster excellence and a positive work culture, hospital officials said.

The award is based on looking at evidence-based criteria such as leadership structures and systems; appropriate staffing and staff engagement; effective communication; knowledge management and learning and development; evidence-based practice and processes; and outcome measurement.

The Camden Clark CVICU and ICU are the first nursing units within the state and region to achieve this award as well as the first to earn the silver designation.

“This makes Camden Clark the only hospital in the state of West Virginia with any Beacon units,” said Carol Grove, Camden’s Chief Nursing Officer. “The fact we have two is just over the top.

“It is amazing and I can not be anymore proud of all of you and your hard work. We are proud to have an organization that encourages nurses and their leaders to create unit cultures that promote evidence-based practice, supports professional growth, focuses on quality improvement and prioritizes a healthy work environment.”

Steve Altmiller, WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center President and CEO, said the award looks at how the nursing teams work together, how well they communicate, how the teams track patient outcomes and more.

“I am very proud of our CVICU and ICU staff and leadership who chose to pursue this recognition,” he said. “Our staff seek to be the best at what they do within their profession as critical care nurses.

“This national recognition validates that our staff are well on their way in the pursuit of excellence.”

Winning the silver award (out of a gold, silver and bronze designation) on the first attempt was very good, Altmiller said.

“They were not only as good as they thought, they were better,” he said. “It speaks a lot to the type of staff we have, their professionalism and their pursuit of excellence.”

The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards.

Director of Emergency, ICU and Trauma Services Chris Dellinger said there is a 35-page application that has to be filled out extensively by the nursing, physician staff and others. It looks at quality outcomes, processes, leadership and more as well as things like length of patient stays in those units which is currently under the national average and central line infection rates where they had zero for an 18-month period.

“It is a prestigious award for us,” Dellinger said. “It lets the community know that we provide excellent care day-in and day-out for the patients we serve.”

The award highlights the hard work these groups do every day and can help recruit more nurses into these units.

“I have a compassionate and dedicated ICU team,” Dellinger said. “It is definitely a morale boost.”

Director of Cardiovascular Services Kristina Brooks has been involved with the CVICU for over 12 years and said the award looks at patient outcomes in the type of care they are receiving.

“You are measured on how your patients are actually doing,” Brooks said. “We are very proud that we have great quality metrics in our open-heart and cardiac programs.

“It is a testament to the work our staff and nurses do and it speaks to the leadership at the unit level as well as the hospital level we have to accomplish the things we need to accomplish to take care of our community the best we can.”

Being National Hospital Week, Altmiller said it was a time to honor everyone at the hospital for the work they do and the service they provide to the community. A number of things will be planned throughout the week.

“It is a way for us to celebrate all of the work our staff does from nurses to housekeepers to physicians to everyone,” he said.
