Presentation Convent, Galway.

Presentation Convent, Galway. This is a copy of an original Hardiman print.

At the request of the Rev. Edmund Ffrench, Warden of Galway, a convent of the Presentation of nuns was established in Galway. His father, the Rev. Edmund Ffrench, had been for many years Warden of the Established Church, and had been elected Mayor in 1774. The name of the Rev. Edmund Ffrench appears among other signatures to the "black petition" against the Catholics in 1761. The petition was on the 10th November of that year presented to Parliament praying to prevent Catholic shopkeepers from manufacturing or selling their goods, or employing journeymen for this purpose. His two sons Charles and Edmund when very young became Catholics, and later on Dominican Friars. Edmund was elected vicar, and on the death of the Warden, Dr. Bodkin, he was in turn in 1812, elected Warden - an appointment which gave rise to great bitterness in the town. The other Vicars protested strongly against his election and charged the lay-patrons "with partiality and injustice". Hardiman writes:"A disunion was accordingly the consequence; the chapter declared the proceedings invalid, refused to confer institution on the newly elected warden, and finally appealed to the Pope, complaining against the innovation of a regular intruding on a secular chapter ... The election, however, was afterwards, on 18th June, 1813, confirmed by the Pope; and the piety, zeal and exertions of Warden Ffrench, since his accession to the wardenship, justly entitle him to the respect and esteem in which he is so generally held."

The Presentation Order was founded by Nano (Honoria) Nagle, a native of Cork. After an elementary education at home, where Catholic schools were declared illegal, she was sent to France to complete her education. Some of her relations were then living in the suite of the exiled King James, and she entered on a brilliant social life in the court circles of Paris. Deciding to devote herself to the education of Irish Catholic children she spent a short time as a postulant at a convent in France. She returned to Ireland where she joined with some ladies who had privately organised a school in Dublin. On the death of her mother and sister she went to Cork, and in spite of the most adverse conditions in that city, she opened a school to combat the ignorance and vice there prevalent. Her first pupils were gathered secretly. In less than a year she succeeded in establishing two schools for boys and five for girls. She also organised and conducted an asylum for aged and infirm women at Cork. For the support of her schools and asylum she personally collected money from door to door in the city. In 1775 she founded the Presentation Order and established a convent, and the order spread rapidly all over Ireland. She adapted the rule of St. Augustine and a habit similar to that of the Ursulines.

Rev. Bartholomew Burke, one of the Catholic vicars of Galway, who died in 1813, bequeathed 6,000 (a great part of which was given him for charitable purposes) for founding a convent of the Presentation Order for the education of poor female children in Galway. The convent was established on the 27th October, 1815, in a house in Kirwan's Lane and a school was opened in November, 1815. A larger house was opened in Eyre Square in the following March. Here the nuns continued until 1819, when they removed to their present convent. This building had been built as a Charter School under the Society for Promoting English Protestant Schools in Ireland. On the 1st April, 1788John Howard described this school: "Twenty two boys, one an idiot. All had shoes and stocking; but in general they did not look healthy, which might be owing to their late recovery from the measles. Allowance for soap, candles and turf only 14 a year. No towels. The house in good repair, but wanted white washing. This is a good situation for a bath". After this report the Charter School declined and was closed in 1798. During the rebellion of that year it was taken over as an artillery barrack and continued to be used as such until 1814.

The nuns held the building by lease for 60 years at 60 annual rent. "Each nun on admission to this order pays a sum of 500 towards the general fund, which is now considered sufficient, with the aid of annual sermons and occasional donations, to support this valuable establishment", wrote Hardiman. In 1820 thirty female orphan children were fed, lodged, clothed and educated, and according to the first Report of the Royal Commission on education, 1825, 395 children were attending the day school. The curriculum was needle work such as Limerick lace, Irish point and crochet, reading, writing and arithmetic. John Barrow in his Tour Round Ireland in 1835, wrote,

"I paid a visit to the Presentation Convent, with which I was much interested. The nuns, two and twenty in number, are all ladies of good family, and employ a part of their time very usefully in the education of children who are received from the age of seven to fifteen or sixteen. It was said there were at this time no less than four hundred under their tuition. They are instructed in the English language, but what books they read I did not learn. They are also taught needle work, and, when sufficiently skilled, are employed in making lace and tambour-work, the materials for which are sent for the purpose in large quantities from Nottingham; and the girls are paid, by those to whom the lace belongs, a certain sum for their labour, which assists their parents in clothing them, and in the payment of their rent. There chanced to be about forty or fifty girls employed in this manner when I passed through the rooms, and I was much pleased with their work, some of the patterns being very rich, and designed with great neatness and precision. The chapel attached to the convent is small but neat, and there is a good painting over the altar. Three of the sisters went through the apartments with us ... One of the ladies was inclined to be conversable, and we had a long chat together regarding the regulations of the convent... I thought she seemed not to have altogether forgotten the world of which she was once a denizen: she asked me about a family who formerly resided in London, and in whom she seemed to take some interest."

Barrow also quotes a letter from an anonymous correspondent on the school,

"In a school of several hundred girls belonging to the Presentation Convent at Galway, and assisted by the National Board we found the great girls writing out themes on virginity, priesthood, and martyrdom. The one state was glorious, the other more so, and the last, of course most of all... Several classes of little girls in the same school had their books open upon a catalogue of saints, male and female, whom they were to call upon in prayer, filling two pages. The children were apparently learning these names by heart; but when I asked if I might be permitted to listen, the nun who had charge of the class instantly began questioning one of them on a different subject, in so low a tone, however, that I heard scarcely anything but the name of Christ, which had no place in the lesson before them... The lady who conducted us over the convent, a beautiful and well bred woman, of about 30 years of age, was recognised by Lord ____, who had just preceded us in a visit to it, as the daughter of a baronet of ancient family, and large estate in an adjoining county. A few years before, she was a Protestant, as all her family are, and mixing with them in the world. This lady told me, that the estimated expense of entrance and profession in her convent was about 500. She expatiated to me with great complacency on the flourishing convent of the same order, which has been lately established in Newfoundland, by a colony of Irish ladies, who have also large schools under their tuition. It is well known, by those who are acquainted with Newfoundland, what strong reinforcements of Irish popery are pouring into that country. "

The circumstances under which the Galway nuns went to Newfoundland are worth a note. At the request of Dr. Fleming, Vicar Apostolic of Newfoundland, Sisters Josephine French and Mother de Sales Lovelock went from Galway to Newfoundland where they established a house at St. John's. Shortly before the arrival of the sisters on the island Catholics, who were mostly Irish, were looked on as a proscribed class by the governors of the time, who were generally commanders of British warships. Priests were hunted and persecuted, people who harboured them or permitted Mass to be celebrated in their houses were fined, imprisoned, and flogged, and their houses either burned or pulled down. These acts were undoubtedly illegal. The penal laws of Ireland were taken as applicable to Newfoundland, and even when Catholic Emancipation was granted to Ireland it was claimed by the legislature that it did not apply to the colony. Dr Fleming fought strongly against these injustices and finally succeeded in obtaining full freedom for the Catholics, and the denominational system of education was established by law.

Presentation

Presentation Ireland works for a more compassionate, just and sustainable world. We are inspired by the people we work with, by their energy, creativity and enthusiasm.  We aim to work in innovative and inclusive ways. We seek to develop new approaches to learning and to create awareness of human rights, and sustainable living. We believe that small, well thought out actions can make a big difference.

We help people to design responses to unmet needs in our society. We try to use the learning from our work to influence public policy to promote inclusion and fairness.

Our work is rooted in the Christian tradition of faith and social justice. Presentation Ireland was set up by the Presentation Sisters. We follow the example of Venerable Nano Nagle, a Cork woman, who challenged institutional injustice by setting up small schools for poor children during the Penal Times in Ireland over 225 years ago.

Currently, our main areas of work are: social inclusion and outreach; learning innovation; ecology and sustainable living. In addition, we have recently embarked on an exciting project to promote greater collaboration among centres and programmes supported by the Presentation Sisters.

After a long wait the new school for Presentation College Athenry is opening for classes on Monday.

This €20 million state of the art Presentation College building will be able to serve 1,000 pupils as demand for education services in the area grows.

It’s taken many years of campaigning by parents, teachers, and the local community for ‘The Pres’ Athenry to get this new facility.

Since first opening its doors in 1947, the Pres has educated three generations of locals in some 70 fine years of work.

Galway East TD Seán Canney congratulated Presentation College on the move to its new school at Ballygurran.

He added that as someone who has worked in education he understands “the importance of providing modern facilities for top class education. In that way, we enable students to maximise their full potential.”

Presentation College isn’t the only major upgrade to Athenry’s education facilities that’s making progress.

Construction got underway on a new school facility for Clarin College last December as is currently expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

“Together these schools will meet the present and future demands for second level education in Athenry,” Seán Canney said

Deputy Canney added that when the new Clarin College is complete, the old campus would be available to develop as primary and secondary gaelscoils for the area.

Cairde Pres, an outreach group made of people who’ve been involved in Presentation College over the years, said that they were feeling nostalgic but excited about the future.

“The students, the teachers and all those involved with ‘The Pres’ helped make so many great memories.”

“We know our lovely new school will help us build more wonderful memories.”

“We look forward to welcoming you all to the new Presentation College at Ballygurraun, Athenry. when we have settled in.”

Galway – St. Joseph’s, Tuam

The story of our community, presentation convent, st. joseph’s, tuam.

Our Community was founded in Tuam, on 10 th May, 1835 at the request of Archbishop McHale on receipt of Mr. Burke’s legacy which was in Galway Presentation Convent. The founding Sisters were Sr. de Sales Coppinger (Superioress), Sr. Lewis Tighe, Sr. Ignatius Blake and Sr. Veronica Cunningham. The reason our school was founded was because no school existed for girls in the town other than a private, fee-paying school for the “well to do”. Mr. Burke requested that the Sisters be brought to educate the poor.

The Convent is located in Tuam town, beside the Cathedral. St. Jarlath’s College, the Bishop’s residence and the Mercy Convent are also located around the Cathedral. The Townland is Currylea and the Convent is build on property owned by William Burke and given for said purpose. Mr. Burke, a Dubliner, who lived in Currylea, Tuam, had made a lot of money in business and he bequeathed a legacy (£30,000) to Archbishop McHale for the foundation of the Presentation Convent and other similar Institutes in town. William Burke’s statue stands on the Cathedral terrace. A Ms. Anna Burke, no relation to William, also helped out financially.

Extensions to Convent were begun in 1848. There was a new wing added comprising a Kitchen & Dining Room and St. Brigid’s & St. Patrick’s corridors. In the early ‘60’s an annex was added to the dining room. In 1991- 1992 the building was converted to a Nursing Home.

Since 1835, the Sisters had taught in their own residence and in 1852 the first school was opened. The building consisted of a solid, masonry, two-storey structure. The school began with 300+ pupils and steadily increased to 500. A new school was built in 1956, just over 100 years later. Subjects taught were Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Spinning, Needlework, Christian Doctrine, Cookery and Laundry. There was also Sunday school Irish. An Inspector’s Report of 1889 also lists Music, Drawing and French. During the Famine years, the work of education had to be abandoned in favour of feeding the starving. The school became a kitchen and they erected sheds in their yard for this purpose. A Soup Kitchen was operated from near Bishop Street Gate.

Anecdotal Early Tales : Dr. McHale was opposed to the National Board of Education, hence there was no financial aid until his successor, Dr. John MacEvilly, acknowledged the Board and became Patron of the school in 1881. The Grant enabled the Sisters to extend the curriculum. Prior to this, the Sisters had greater freedom when the school was a voluntary school and even taught the forbidden subject “Irish”! They displayed religious objects in their classrooms – this was much ‘frowned on’ when they came under the Board. (See reference below re Sacred Heart picture). The Sisters also tried to set up an Alms House for aged women and appealed to the Public for help; however, the Scheme had to be abandoned for lack of funds.

The new Primary School opened in 1956 – to accommodate it on the site, the Cemetery had to be relocated to its present position. The school celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2006. This particular year also marked the end of the Sisters in the school after 171 years. Many events took place in the course of the year 2005-2006, culminating in a great celebration in November, 2006. A Commerative Book was launched and a plaque unveiled in the school to honor both events.

The old primary school building is now used as extra accommodation for the Sisters and is called St. Veronica’s, after one of the founding sisters, noted for her generosity towards the poor. The first lay principal, who was also the first lay teacher in 1977, was appointed in 2007.

Rising enrolment and the requirement of extra rooms for Resource Learning and Language Support necessitated the erection of two large pre-fab classrooms. Ground space being limited, meant that a piece of ground had to be supplied by Convent. A Shelter had to be removed to provide extra playing space and another Shelter developed into small classrooms.

Development of Secondary School : In 1882, a house at Bishop St. Gate, known as St. Joseph’s, became a Boarding House for pupils, beginning with 5 pupils. In 1897, three houses on Dublin Road, later St. John’s, were purchased for £300 to accommodate the increasing number of Boarders. In 1905, a building of St. Jarleth’s was used also and in 1956 the Protestant Bishop’s Palace was purchased – this is now known as “Joe O’Toole’s” Restaurant. In 1912 the school came under the Intermediate Board of Education and, with payments received, four new classrooms were added, together with a Library. From 1956, the old Primary school housed the Secondary School. The introduction of ‘free education’, announced in 1967, led to increased enrolment and to the building of a new boarding secondary school in Currylea in 1971. A convent on the Currylea site was finished on 1972 to accommodate the community of teaching Sisters.

The Boarding school was phased out completely by 1990, as it was becoming increasingly difficult to supervise Boarding accommodation and, in any case, children had easier access to a greater range of local schools.

Development of Other Ministries from late 1970’s onwards : Sisters were invited by the Archbishop to do home and household education with the women in Estates. Sisters also became involved in visitation of homes, adult literacy classes organized at night for Travellers, Religious adult education, teacher exchange between Currylea and St. Jarleth’s, provision of religious classes for Technical School, involvement in Parish Pastoral Team, involvement in Parish Pastoral Council, classes for handicapped in Toghermore and in Prayer ministry in the Parish and in Knock. In addition Sisters assisted various voluntary Organisations – handicapped, wheelchair, cancer care, St. Vincent de Paul and social services. A Sister also acts as Diocesan Advisor and some are involved on Boards of Management.

Foundations in Ireland from Tuam: Athenry (1908), Headford (1910), Keel, Achill (1919), Tiernea (1935), Carraroe (1956) and Currylea (1972).

Foundations/Missions Overseas founded from here : New Zealand (1950) founded by M. Zavier Curran, Sr. Asicus Shanaher, Sr. Pius Carney, Sr. Catherine McHugh and Sr. Perpetua Leahy.

The Presentation Mission in Peru and Chile, founded from New Zealand, has a special link with St. Joseph’s, Tuam. Two of the religious working in this depressed and underprivileged part of South America began their religious life in Tuam.

FROM AN OLD ARTICLE (in Out of the Shadows ):

WHEN ARCHBISHOP McHALE arrived in Tuam in 1835, he bemoaned the fact that there ‘was not a solitary convent in the diocese ‘. This was quickly put to rights by the response to his invitation to the Presentation Sisters in Galway to found an institution in Tuam town. Thus, the Presentation Convent of St Joseph’s, on Bishop Street, is the oldest extant convent in the archdiocese.

As a cloistered Congregation at the time of their arrival in Tuam, the sisters were confined to their own grounds and could engage in education and works of charity only in their own premises. Even to participate in the Sunday schools of the time at the nearby Cathedral was beyond their remit in those days. This stemmed from the canonical classification of their Order as an Order with solemn vows in the approval given by Rome after the death of the founder, Nano Nagle.

Their first primary school was a long, low, thatched building, adjacent to Bishop St, which was accessible through a gate now used only as a pedestrian entrance, from the street itself. In 1848, the Sisters built their Convent on the Cathedral terrace behind their school. There was, at the time, only one school, a ‘pay school’, in Tuam. This was of benefit only to the children of the well-off. When the sisters opened their primary school, they immediately had a massive intake of 300 children.

As was the case with other religious congregations in the diocese, the sisters had to provide their primary school out of their own resources. The embargo by Archbishop McHale on joining the government scheme for National Schools, and the consequent loss of government aid, made life hard for the sisters. The reason for the embargo only became clear to the Sisters many years later, when, under the regime of Archbishop MacEvilly, the sisters were at last permitted to apply for recognition as a National School. Whereas the school got an excellent report from the Government inspectors, they were directed by letter to remove all Catholic emblems from their classrooms during times when subjects other than Religion were being taught. They were specifically instructed by the Commissioners that they were to remove the picture of the Sacred Heart in a certain classroom.

In an interesting reply from Mother M J McTucker, dated 7 December 1898, the case is made that only Catholic pupils were attending the school and that the work referred to was the work of the children themselves and that it served ‘as as a constant encouragement to them in their drawing, the aim being to do one like it for their own home ’ . The letter from the doughty Superior ends with a memorable line: ‘We took down the drawing according to your directions, but have replaced it again, awaiting your reply ‘.

A Boarding School — 1890

In about 1852, the sisters commenced a type of secondary schooling and in 1890 began to provide boarding facilities. This school submitted students for what was called ‘the King’s scholarship’, but did not become a registered Secondary School under the Intermediate Board founded by the Intermediate Education Act, until 1912. Therefore it was not in receipt of any of the new Government grants which might be payable on the basis of the results achieved in these examinations. The school, however, was to gain a national reputation for the excellence of its results in the King’s scholarship. In one particular year twenty girls secured places in the Training College. In those years, the school was run by Sr. Aidan Murphy, a particularly gifted teacher.

An advertisement for the Tuam Presentation Convent School in The Irish Catholic Directory for 1912, for ‘young ladies ‘, where ‘most particular attention was paid to the health and deportment of the children’ and where ‘pupils are taught such subjects as Shorthand, Drawing, Painting, Typewriting, Book-keeping and French as well as Cooking, Laundry and ornamental Needlework’ . Significantly, the advertisement states, almost as an afterthought, that ‘an Intermediate School has also been started this year .’

This Intermediate school meant that the school was now recognised under the Intermediate Education Act and could submit students for the public examinations. Based on the results achieved, the school could qualify for small grants. This would be the origin of the Presentation Secondary School from which the huge modern-day Presentation College at Currylea, Tuam has grown.

At the time of its inception in 1912, the Intermediate school was based in part of the old Primary school on the Cathedral Terrace. Extra buildings were constantly being added, without any grants, and the Primary school itself was itself replaced by a new Primary School on Dublin Road only in 1956. In opening this school, provided at a cost of €88,880, Archbishop Walsh remarked that this was the first building for which the Presentation Sisters had ever received a government grant since their arrival in Tuam in 1835.

The Secondary School continued to use the Cathedral Terrace building until the late 1950’s. All the time the school was expanding as its reputation as a boarding school and day school spread and a new interest in secondary schooling became more general in the country. The school grew from 65 pupils in 1935, lo 188 in 1952, and to 237 in 1960. Throughout these years, many of the boarders had their accommodation at the opposite side of the Cathedral Terrace in what was called the ‘Old Palace’ and which was subsequently taken over by St Jarlath’s for a time, until it reverted to the diocese in recent years. This ‘Old Palace’ had been, through the entire nineteenth century, the home of Archbishop’s Kelly, McHale, MacEvilly and Healy until the latter moved, in 1905, to the present location of Archbishop’s House at the rear of the Cathedral.

Space had always been a problem for the sisters on their constricted site so, in 1956, the Presentation sisters purchased the spacious grounds of the former Church of Ireland Bishop, together with the Protestant Bishops’ Palace, the substantial building, now the ‘Palace Restaurant’, on the south side of Bishop St. This became their new school for a number of years and remained as the boarding school accommodation until 1990. The spacious grounds to the rear of the building allowed the construction of the present Presentation College at Currylea in 1972. Since then, the numbers have increased dramatically to almost 500 pupils.

As Tuam town is unique, for its size, in having four Secondary Schools and a Vocational School, the Mercy and Presentation Sisters decided, in 1998, in order to guarantee a continuity of service and a better level of choice to the girls attending their schools, to institute steps to amalgamate their two secondary schools in Tuam town. For the same reason, a decision was reached, two years later, to amalgamate St Jarlath’s and St Patrick’s Colleges for boys. These projects were still at the planning stage at the time of writing in early 2008.

Presentation College, Headford

Mission Statement

Presentation College, Headford is a Voluntary, Catholic, Secondary School which opens its doors to all. Its aim, in partnership with parents, is to facilitate the education of its students for Christian living, by developing each one morally, socially, culturally, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and physically. We seek to promote a caring and committed school community where learning is nurtured, where gifts are recognised and the dignity of each person is valued.

School History

The story of Presentation College Headford began on Friday, August 26th 1942, in a disused army hut behind the presbytery. The founders of the new school were the Presentation Sisters, who had been involved in primary education in Headford since 1906. At first, the new secondary school catered for girls only.

In its opening year, there were seventeen students in first year and twenty in second year. By 1946, the demand for more space necessitated the use of the parochial hall and the convent dining room as classrooms.

The building of the new post-primary school at a cost of £12,000 in 1953 was a landmark. It consisted of six classrooms, a home economics room and a staff room – all still part of the present structure.

The courageous decision to become coeducational marked a new departure, and the arrival of eighteen intrepid boys in 1955 created a truly ‘mixed’ school. Sr. Vianney guided PCH through this transition and the rapid increase in student numbers during the ‘free education’ era in the sixties and seventies.  This expansion made it necessary to plan an extension, which was completed in 1978, to provide facilities for a wider curriculum. These facilities enabled the school to offer woodwork, metalwork, technical drawing, art, computers, music, typing and home economics, as well as the traditional academic subjects. Thus the school broke from the narrow academic tradition and became comprehensive, striving to cater for the needs of all.

In a notable showcase of academic excellence and scholarly engagement, students from the Schar School of Policy and Government made a significant impact at the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) Conference held in Chicago earlier this month. Despite its regional designation, the conference attracted some 5,000 attendees, solidifying its status as a premier national event in the field of political science.

Among the participants were two undergraduate and eight doctoral students from the Schar School, who distinguished themselves through their presentations of papers and posters. Their topics spanned a wide range of political science disciplines, reflecting the depth and diversity of research being conducted at the institution.

The presentations covered areas such as public perception of political events, the impact of Supreme Court rulings, the analysis of political disloyalty, community sponsorship in resettlement, and the intricate dynamics of global politics, among others.

The students' contributions were not only well-received but also highlighted their professional demeanor, analytical prowess, and engaging presentation skills. Their work garnered positive feedback throughout the weekend-long event, demonstrating the high caliber of mentorship and academic preparation they received at the Schar School.

In the days prior to the conference, student participants were invited to an afternoon workshop where several of their professors, experienced hands at presenting difficult material to a live audience, coached them during practice sessions. The fine-tuning paid off.

The Schar School representatives were “professional, poised, curious, and engaging,” said Associate Professor Jennifer N. Victor . “[They were] doing their best and getting good feedback on their work. I was proud to be their professor, mentor, and colleague at this important national political science conference.”

As the MPSA Conference continues to be a pivotal event for political science scholars nationwide, the participation of Schar School students not only enhances their own academic profiles but also elevates the school's reputation as a hub for innovative research and scholarly excellence.

‘We lost heroes.’ CMPD officer, 3 US Marshal task force members killed in E CLT shootout; 4 hurt

C HARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) — Three U.S. Marshal task force officers and a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer were killed, and four other officers, three of whom were with CMPD, were hurt during an east Charlotte shootout that stemmed from a fugitive warrant operation on Monday afternoon.

Residents, along with anyone in the area of the neighborhood, were asked to avoid the area as active gunfire was ongoing for hours. At 4:56 p.m., CMPD said the area was safe .

The situation began around 1:50 p.m. along Galway Drive near Denson Place.

CMPD announced that Officer Joshua Eyer was shot in the line of duty Monday afternoon after assisting other officers with the apprehension of a suspect. Eyer was a six-year veteran and a member of the 178th Recruit Class.

The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections stated that two of the USMS members were N.C. Department of Adult Correction veterans. They were identified as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott. Poloche leaves behind a wife and two children, while Elliott and his wife are parents to one child.

The third task force officer, Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas M. Weeks Jr., 48, of Mooresville, is a 13-year veteran of the USMS who has served the Western District of North Carolina for the last ten years. He leaves behind a wife and four kids.

Police say as the task force tried to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, they were met with gunfire, and officers returned fire. During that shootout, authorities struck the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, and he was pronounced deceased in the front yard.

Hughes was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony to elude out of Lincoln County.

As officers approached Hughes, they said they were met by more gunfire from inside the home. After a long standoff, officers cleared the house and found two females inside, an adult and a 17-year-old, who were both brought to the police station as persons of interest.

“Today [Monday] is an absolutely tragic day for the city of Charlotte and the profession of law enforcement,” said CMPD police chief Johnny Jennings. “Today, we lost some heroes...that were out...just simply trying to keep our community safe.”

Statesville Police announced that one of the four other officers injured was among their own, Cpl. Casey Hoover, a U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force member. Hoover was shot in his upper torso but is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.

CMPD’s SWAT team helped handle the incident. They advised that the threat was isolated to the area of 5000 Galway Drive but still asked residents to shelter in place.

Our full, live report can be watched below:

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said two schools were on full lockdown: Devonshire Elementary School and Briarwood Academy. Those students were able to be dismissed once police issued the all-clear around 3:40 p.m. Two other schools, Cochrane Collegiate and Lawrence Orr Elementary School, were put on modified lockdown and are being dismissed on a staggered system.

Officers listed the incident as a “severe alert.” They said “numerous law enforcement officers” were hit by gunfire in the situation, stating the US Marshals Task Force was conducting an investigation in the area when they were engaged in active gunfire by a subject.

Many roads, including parts of Interstate 77 and 277, were closed for faster ambulance transports. Charlotte Area Transit System notified those on the Gold Line that emergency vehicles blocked the tracks from Elizabeth and Hawthorn to Sunnyside Station.

A Witness’s Perspective

A neighbor said dozens of law enforcement officers used his home and backyard during the shootout.

Live on WBTV, Tyler Wilson described officers streaming into his home, including one officer who appeared to be a sniper using his window during an active shootout Monday afternoon. At one point, Wilson said he saw one officer dragged through his home by his shoulders. He wasn’t able to see the extent of the officer’s injuries or whether the officer was shot.

Wilson said the people who lived in the home had lived there for “a year and change” but otherwise didn’t know them. They occasionally had backyard parties, Wilson said.

Wilson described the scene as “gunfire galore,” with officers army-crawling through his backyard, hiding behind trees, and jumping around bushes.

Officers ordered Wilson and two others in the home to hide in a back room as the gunfire was ongoing. At around 4 p.m., Wilson said it had been quiet for about 90 minutes.

Official Statements

Governor Roy Cooper tweeted , stating he was in contact with law enforcement “concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area, and we have offered state resources to help.”

At about 5:20 p.m., it was confirmed Cooper was en route to Charlotte following the devastating news that law enforcement officers were killed.

Mayor Vi Lyles issued the following statement regarding the shooting:

“I am deeply saddened by the shooting that occurred that involved Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers and US Marshals today. I ask that all Charlotteans keep them, the other injured officers, and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

Senator Tom Tillis also tweeted , calling the incident an “attack in Charlotte.”

“An attack in Charlotte on our brave law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and serve us all,” he wrote. “Susan and I are praying for everyone’s safety.”

Atrium Health’s statement relating to today’s CMPD officer tragedies can be read below:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred today involving multiple law enforcement officers. Our Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center emergency department teammates immediately began providing care to the injured. We have also been extending emotional support to their families and colleagues.

As a hospital, our priority is to provide the best possible care to our patients, while respecting their privacy and confidentiality. We are working closely with the police department, who is leading the investigation and the communication with the media and the public.”

CMPD issued a statement , which read in part:

“Today, some of our fellow colleagues made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and protection of our community. We are grateful for the bravery shown by all officers and outpouring responses from our neighboring agencies.”

President Joe Biden released the following statement:

“Earlier today, four brave law enforcement officers - including a Deputy U.S. Marshal - were killed in the line of duty. They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded.

When a law enforcement officer puts on that shield in the morning and heads out the door, their family members dread the phone call – the very call that came today. It’s like losing a piece of your soul. To the families of those we lost: Jill and I, and all Americans, are here for you. And we will always be here for you.

We must do more to protect our law enforcement officers. That means funding them - so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. And it means taking additional action to combat the scourge of gun violence. Now. Leaders in Congress need to step up so that we ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of guns, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law. Enough is enough.

May God Bless these fallen heroes.”

The Gaston County Board of Commissioners issued a statement on today’s tragedies that can be read below:

“On behalf of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, we extend our deepest condolences to our brothers and sisters in the law enforcement community. Today, we mourn the loss of several brave heroes and pray for those injured in the line of duty defending us from evil.

This tragedy transcends political affiliations. Now is the time to set aside our differences and focus on the physical and mental health well-being of those who protect and serve our communities. It is a time for unity and shared concern for our law enforcement family.

In these trying times, Gaston County stands in unity with our local and federal law enforcement families. We are committed to providing support and assistance in any way we can.

We also extend our support to the officers’ families, loved ones, and teammates. We recognize your grief and pledge our steadfast support during this challenging time.

In memory of our fallen heroes, we will continue to honor their service by upholding the values they hold dear. Their legacy of courage, sacrifice, and dedication will continue to inspire us all.”

The NC Department of Corrections issued the statement below in a news release:

“These officers died as heroes and made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to our state. We remember them, we honor their service, we send our deepest condolences to their families and friends, and we pray for healing for all affected by this tragic incident.”

Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC owner David Tepper released the following statement:

“We are deeply saddened to learn members of the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force and a CMPD officer were tragically killed in the line of duty today. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this horrific tragedy.” - David and Nicole Tepper

A GoFundMe has been started to provide support for those affected.

“As the investigation unfolds and the names of the fallen are confirmed, the community stands together in solidarity, determined to honor the bravery of those who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty,” the fundraiser reads.

ABSN Student Connects Dermatology and Mental Health During Poster Presentation

Duke School of Nursing ABSN Student Alexandria Inthavanh’s research highlights the need for mental health screenings in dermatology to enhance patient care and address health disparities.

Inthavanh

Inthavanh said her inspiration for the poster came from the high volume of new nurses entering the cosmetic and dermatology industry who do not consider mental health when consulting patients about their expected outcomes. “Mental health is one of the many reasons why patients decide to undergo any cosmetic procedure and providers oftentimes overlook the screenings when there may be an underlying cause that may need other psychiatric treatment.”

She added, “I hope individuals who work in the dermatology and aesthetic industry will consider using the Peak Consultation Method and the Body Dysmorphic disorder screening when treating their patients. By taking the extra step to screen patients, we can help prevent unnecessary cosmetics procedures or treatment.”

Inthavanh said the conference was spectacular and extremely educational and led her to realize the Duke School of Nursing has an opportunity to enhance its nursing education when it comes to teaching students about the skin. “I was able to sit on lectures about T-cell Lymphoma, Pediatric Dermatology, Psoriasis, and so much more.”

She has worked with Associate Professor Amie Koch , DNP, FNP-C, RN, ACHPN on the importance of screening for mental health concerns while in a dermatology setting and breaking the negative stigma behind mental health screenings in the Aesthetic and Dermatology fields.

Inthavanh said she was amazed by the magnitude of peers who informed her that mental health is not heavily spoken about in Dermatology or Aesthetics. “I hope to further my research and provide more primary prevention methods and awareness to this unspoken topic.”

She hopes to share this experience with her colleagues and believes it can pioneer a greater change for Duke in filling healthcare gaps. “Specifically, through my experience and continuing this research, I believe I can help fill gaps in mental health awareness in dermatology and nursing dermatology education in higher education institutions,” Inthavanh said.

A major part of Inthavanh’s work at DUSON is centered on conducting mental health screenings before a cosmetic procedure and she said she hopes to help eliminate associated health inequalities by doing so. “Many patients do not fully understand the benefits and risks of procedures and there is often a gray area. While presenting at the conference, I asked each individual ‘have you ever been screened at a dermatology office, MedSpa, or plastic surgeon’s office for mental health,’ and every single individual answered no,” she said.

She continued, “this is a cause for concern as patients who have mental health conditions may need other psychiatric measures. One argument is that there is a negative connotation when asking patients about their mental health in the dermatology and cosmetic industry as it can deter clientele and limit revenue.”

Inthavanh said as industry nurses, it is imperative that they break the negative stigma about losing clients and money and make mental health consultations a normality. By doing so, nurses can prevent unwarranted procedures, prevent addictions, and treat other concerns patients may have.

“In my work to reduce these inequities, as a fourth semester student in the ABSN program, I created the Aesthetic and Dermatology Students organization. This organization aims to bridge schooling and the professional industry and support students in their education in Aesthetics and Dermatology,” she said. “The organization provides educational resources, trainings with professionals, and conference opportunities.”

Inthavanh is a native of Atlanta and resides in Charlotte, N.C., with her husband Nash and their 2-year-old daughter, Desa.

Olsen, Oakridge, Broward Estates are among schools to close in new proposed plan

Superintendent howard hepburn holds town halls until may 9.

Sanela Sabovic , Reporter

Andrea Torres , Digital Journalist

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The first of seven town hall meetings with the Broward County Public Schools superintendent was on Monday in Hollywood.

Superintendent Howard Hepburn said he received “a lot“ of feedback from the community at Hollywood Hills High School.

Hepburn talked about the possibility of closing Olsen Middle in Dania Beach, Oakridge Elementary in Hollywood, and Broward Estates Elementary in Lauderhill.

“We can come up with the best options,” Hepburn said. “It is not going to make everybody happy. These are tough decisions that affect families.”

The proposed plan did not sit well with Julie Burger Shannon. She works as an exceptional student education specialist at Oakridge Elementary School.

“We are extremely shocked and also disappointed,” the teacher said. “We were never included in any preliminary conversations.”

Several other schools identified in five zones would be combined, have a boundary adjustment, or be repurposed to expand community services.

The district also presented a second proposal known as the “total district realignment plan,” which Hepburn opposes. It would match the number of seats per student prompting 42 schools to close.

The goal remains to eliminate excess seat capacity districtwide. One of the proposals would redraw all school boundaries and eliminate magnet programs.

School board members are set to vote on a final plan on June 18. The process is set to take years and there won’t be any changes during the 2024-25 school year.

“I want to make sure I support a plan that looks at all of Broward,” said Daniel P. Foganholi, the school board member representing District 5.

NEXT 6 TOWN HALL MEETINGS

The next meeting with Hepburn will be in District 4 at 6 p.m., at J.P. Taravella High School, 10600 Riverside Drive, in Coral Springs.

The meeting at District 5 is at 6 p.m., on May 1, at Dillard High 6-12, at 2501 NW 11 St., in Fort Lauderdale. The meeting at District 3 is at 6 p.m., on May 6, at Fort Lauderdale High School, at 1600 NE 4 Ave.

The meeting at District 2 is at 6 p.m., on May 7, at Charles W. Flanagan High School at 12800 Taft St., in Pembroke Pines.

The meeting at District 6 is at 6 p.m., on May 8, at Western High School, at 1200 SW 136 Ave., in Davie. The meeting at District 7 is at 6 p.m., on May 9, at Deerfield Beach High School, at 910 Buck Pride Way.

  1. The Presentation Convent School
