Nishabdam Movie Review: A two-hour forced narration to convey a lousy message
Nishabdam review: This can be a compelling mystery or a mixed-genre film to those who have never watched the scenic beauty of US constructions and typecast alarming camera movements on the screen.
Key Highlights
- Nishabdam, named Silence in Tamil, has been directed by Hemanth Madhukar and produced by Kona Venkat who also wrote the screenplay
- Despite the star casting including Madhavan, Anushka Shetty and Anjali, the film largely lacks the substance to engage the audience
- The idea to film a mystery thriller with perspective story-telling can be appreciated. However, it has plenty of lethargic loopholes in its 2-hour narration
Silence, named Nishabdam in Tamil , begins with a shot of a secluded villa in Seattle, US followed by a couple dancing for a song holding a glass of wine each. The eerie camera moves to reveal something startling has been set. The scene ends with the couple getting murdered and crucified by an unknown force (typical horror stunts) in the basement of the woodhouse villa. This incident happens in 1972 and hence the place is termed as a haunted villa.
The real story, as narrated by Mahalakshmi a Seattle police officer played by Anjali, begins 49 years after the first incident inside the villa. Sakshi (Anushka Shetty) shows up as a differently-abled (aurally & orally) sketch artist who falls for the world-class cello player, Anthony (Madhavan). Sonali (Shalini Pandey) is a close friend of Sakshi and both of them share a deep relationship while growing up in an orphanage together. Vivek (Subbaraju) is a popular photographer who travels with the key characters in the film.
It takes some time to understand the relationship between the characters in the film until we are 'taught' by the narrators in the course. Speaking about narration, it might feel like the lack of synchronization experienced during a mobile conversation due to network issues. To make the audience engage with the plot, the story-telling aspect should subconsciously guide them into the world of the characters. However, Silence drags the attention of the viewer, which is already lost elsewhere and probably, who may be thinking to pause the film or continue watching later (which would not have been possible in theatres).
The laziness in writing even such a long-forgotten template horror or thriller could be spotted throughout the film. Having said that, the idea to tell a compelling mystery thriller or horror story from varied perspectives deserves appreciation. The whodunnit factor introduced in the middle of the film literally 'betrays' the audience who might have expected to watch a horror or ghost story. Therefore they have to forget the first five minutes, except for the Josephine artwork . The off-beat behavioural pattern of the character Captain Richard Dickens (Michael Madsen) coupled with Maha's self-proclaimed intelligent quotient could allude to the enchantment of a 3-year-old kid in a peek-a-boo game.
The audience should strictly turn off their logical instincts without which, it will be really hard to feel the intricately layered suspense elements like the scene where Richard opens the door of a house with an 'evidence key' but the intruder Maha uses her intellect and finds a window that can be opened in just a slide.
A few minutes before taking the 2-hour forced narration to a halt, the director unveils a series of twists to convey a lousy message about the concept of love. The clean roads of the US, neatly constructed houses, art-galleries, greeneries, local police departments, and explicitly staged performances of actors might create curiosity for people who are not even fond of primary school kids stage plays.

People Media Factory மற்றும் Kona Film Corporation படத்தை தயாரித்துள்ளது.

Synopsys: A couple die in a haunted house in Seattle in 1972. Word spreads that the house is haunted. After 46 years, a couple Sakshi (Anushka Shetty) and Anthony (R. Madhavan) go inside that haunted house in search of a painting. Anthony is killed and Sakshi escapes. The case is handed over to Seattle police Maha (Anjali) and Richard. Sakshi, who is the sole witness is a deaf and dumb girl. Who killed Anthony? How did Maha solve the case forms the remaining story of the film.
Due to the pandemic, the movie that was scheduled to be released on big screens got postponed indefinitely and got finally released on OTT Platform. This movie is released on Amazon Prime on 2 nd of October in Telugu, Tamil and English versions. The film is dubbed in Malayalam with the same name while the Tamil and English version is named Silence.
Madhurkar, who got inspired by the movie Pushpaka Vimana wanted to make a similar dialogue less thriller. Later he gave the story to Kona Venkat who thought it had the potential of an “International project” and has added dialogues to it.
Anushka Shetty who is seen in many heroine-oriented films plays the deaf and mute character named Sakshi. She has played her role well. Her facial expressions and sign language are so commendable. She has trained herself in sign language for more than two months. Her eyes and expressions speak thousand words. Madhavan fits into his character of a wealthy popular musician. Anjali, looked serious in her role as a cop. She looks fit and suitable for the role and carried herself well. Subbaraju, Shalini Pandey and Avasarala Srinivas did their characters very good. Shalini’s role of a over-protective friend is well portrayed.
The background score of the movie took the movie to an outstanding level as the music plays an important role in the thriller films. The songs are very good. Ninne Ninne by Sid Sreeram was very good. Madhuramide was very melodious.
The story and the script were good. This movie is not like any other murder mysteries. This movie starts with horror element and slowly takes the story making it a crime thriller. Undoubtedly it keeps the audience glued to the screens with its twists. Perhaps, better direction would have given even better results as the film has got a talented star cast who had much to offer with their acting skills. Nevertheless, the film is still must watchable for its starcast and commendable acting of the lead actors.

Silence/Nishabdham Review - The amateurishness is deafening!

Silence/Nishabdham - The amateurishness is deafening!
Bharath Vijayakumar
What is it with South Indian OTT releases featuring leading ladies. Leaving aside the quality of the films, there seems to be more than one similarity. This could be mere coincidence but Ponmagal Vandhal, Penguin and now Nishabdham/Silence. Slightly darker films with a rather brooding female at the forefront must be the first thing that comes to mind when these makers sit down to decide a project!
Nishabdham gets into business right away. There is a murder within the first few minutes and few minutes later we are introduced to Sakshi (Anushka) and Anthony (Madhavan). What also gets registered in these first few minutes is a sense of disappointment because a certain amateurish feel is unmistakable and this despite the presence of established stars on screen. Sakshi is an artist and Anthony is a musician. Does any of this information really matter? Not really, but I need to write something about the movie. Hence kindly bear with me.
Anjali (investigating officer) along with her boss (played by American actor Michael Madsen) provide some respite for us in the form of unintended humour. Both these actors seem to be the only ones excited about the film but that only means we need to put up with their histrionics. Atleast with Michael there is a certain intrigue with the way he moves around but Anjali trying to be all serious and yet cool only ends up being unintentionally funny.
It is tough to analyse where something went wrong because right through the film there is very little that really works. The later portions with a crucial reveal does hold some interest and you can now see that the one liner did have potential. This also explains why these established stars probably signed up for the film. But the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
Bottomline:
With those twists towards the end, there is a possibility that the one liner might have sounded interesting. But Nishabdham / Silence is painfully uninteresting with a meandering focus, characters that you don't care for and performances that range from bad to perfunctory!

Silence – Review
Silence, a horror movie directed by Hemant Madhukar, produced by Kona Venkat and Vishwa Prasad and released in Tamil and Telugu at a time. Madhavan and Anushka Shetty play the lead roles and supported by Anjali, Shalini Pandey, Srinivas Avasarala, Subharaju and Michael Madsen. Music by Gopi Sundar and Cinematography by Shaneil Deo.
The story is about Sakshi (Anushka Shetty), a deaf and mute painter who goes to a Mansion in Seattle, America with her fiance Anthony (Madhavan) to get a special painting, available in that mansion building so that she can replicate it. There Anthony gets murdered mysteriously and Police investigates and the story goes on. That building was haunted and left abandoned for many years and so on.
There are many drawbacks in the movie. Opening scene was very nice and promising. The disappointment is no other scene was like that. Nothing impressing and we find it very difficult to stay till the end. Anushka Shetty does the role well as a deaf and mute but not allowing her drawbacks overcome her ambitions. Her acting is not excellent and she is the best among all acted in the film.
Characterizations itself has many flaws. Why Anushka Shetty is deaf and mute and what importance it has got with the story is not clear. Her inability to speak and hear doesn’t make any difference anywhere. This characterization may be to justify the title. But we feel that the title is the answer for all questions arising within us during the movie.
Why Madhavan is a billionaire and a world class cello player and what connection it has got with the story is again a question mark. It seems that it is a ploy not to hamper the image of the renowned actor.
Finally, why the story is set in America, what difference it makes to the story telling is a great mystery. The concept could have been fitted easily anywhere else. By setting the story in U S, we get a very different feeling of the characters struggling in speaking English, the accents are out of sync and the dialogues are like translated from Telugu to English.
Music and Cinematography are remarkable.
The motives of almost all the characters are not explained. The film tries hard to Americanize an ordinary story and to evoke a different feeling. But all that we are left with after seeing the film is the title of the movie, Silence.

Silence Movie Review
With time, the OTT platform is beginning to see big budget flicks, even of big stars landing in on its platform. Though, the Bollywood entertainment industry has already embraced the OTT platform to an extent, the South Indian cinema industry is still hesitant to place its balls on it. With Jyothika’s Ponmagal Vandhal, Keerthy Suresh’s Penguin, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar’s Danny, and Vaibhav’s Lock Up being the only few entertainers previously reaching the audience on their hand devices, in comes a decent budget film Silence . From trying to craft the nature of his lead characters in an intriguing way to attempting to keep the audience hooked with split screen horror angles, director Hemant Madhukar has ambitiously moved things. But has he succeeded in his attempt? To know let us get in to the review.
Silence Movie Review – Anushka Shetty, Anjali, Madhavan
Silence begins with depicting an event that took place in the 1970’s on a Christmas night in a villa nearby Seattle in the U.S. A young couple are entertaining themselves with wine, music, and dance. Moments later, the girl begins to head upstairs while the boy goes to the basement. Bam, we have the conventional thrill elements the flickering of bulbs and demonic background score. The girl begins to walk towards the basement and shrieks at the sight of her brutally murdered boyfriend. The crime goes unsolved and as the result the house is tagged haunted around the surrounding. The scene cuts to 2019 where the house is bought and renovated except for the basement by a Colombian businessman who lists the house as a rental property.
Then we get the introduction of our protagonist Sakshi ( Anushka Shetty ), a deaf-mute woman who grew up in an orphanage. Sakshi is a talented artist and her art works are well received. She displays her works at exhibitions and raise funds for the orphanage. During one such event a much celebrated cellist Anthony Gonzalves ( Madhavan ) comes across Sakshi and is smitten by her. He purchases Sakshi’s painting for a million dollar. Sakshi expresses her gratitude and informs him that half of the money will be going to the orphanage. Then the eventuality happens; Sakshi falls for Anthony Gonzalves in no time. Sakshi’s close friend Sonali ( Shalini Pandey ) has trepidation over Anthony Gonzalves. In spite that Sakshi gets engaged to him.
One day Sakshi and Anthony Gonzalves go on a short trip to the haunted house just to see a painting that Sakshi’s is more interested in and plans on replicating. The couple reaches the place and gets in to the house, but before we could settle in, Anthony Gonzalves is murdered in the exact pattern as the guy who was murdered in the 1970’s. Shocked Sakshi flees for her life and wakes up in a hospital. In walks Maha ( Anjali ), a detective and Michael Madsen, a cop in the Seattle Police Department to investigate the mysterious murder of renowned cellist Anthony Gonzalves. Their every attempt to solve the case ends in a road block. Meanwhile, Sakshi’s close friend Sonali is found to be missing since the murder. Does Sonali’s disappearance has anything to do with the murder or is there a ghost angle to the murder, is what makes the rest of the flick.
The strength of any murder mystery thriller depends on the knots that it knits at the beginning, then the gradual unfolding of the knots, and startling revelations towards the end. Silence knits the same clichéd knots that many thriller films have done in the past and the twists in the flick are so predictable that one can foresee what is coming even after missing out few minutes of the drama. The director’s minimal use of visual narrative and predominant deployment of voiceover narrative kills the thrill of the thriller entertainer. There are also some key elements which were used to lure the audience’s attention initially but were left out half way through. For instance, the speech and hearing impairment of the lead character which seemed like some sort of allegory has no real impact in the plot. The rest of the characters are also half baked and walk in and out of the plot to the comfort of the story teller.
Though it is good to witness actress Anushka Shetty after quite a while, one could clearly agree it is surely not one of her best performances. Also, the weak characterization makes it even difficult to bear. Actor Madhavan who has been away from acting for quite some time has returned to acting. He has a very short screen time, more sort of extended guest appearance. But he is the saving grace of the film and essays off his different shades role with ease and makes his presence felt in short phase. Actress Anjali suffers in an awkwardly misplaced role. Surprising the much expected Kill Bill star Michael Madsen’s character has no depth in affecting the flow of the plot and only raises the question of his presence in the flick. Actress Shalini Pandey struggles even in a simple role.
On the technical front, musicians G. Girish, Gopi Sundar and Vishwajeet Jaykar have done a decent job to make thrilling moments effective. Cinematographer Shaneil Deo’s frames have wonderfully covered the beauty of Seattle, especially during the night. Editor Prawin Pudi’s pointless use of split screen leaves us in splits.
On the whole, director Hemant Madhukar ambitiously attempts to dish out an interesting thriller but it is his own lazy writing and narrative style that has squandered the chance of making one.

"Silence" is a monumental work, and a punishing one. It puts you through hell with no promise of enlightenment, only a set of questions and propositions, sensations and experiences.
It is no surprise to learn that the film's director, Martin Scorsese , has been working on it for decades, since he first read the 1966 source novel by Shûsaku Endô about Jesuit priests suffering for their faith in 17th century Japan, where Christianity is outlawed. I can't think of another Scorsese film that's so intent on simply showing us things and letting us consider their meaning. There's a little bit of voiceover narration and a few shots that go inside characters' perceptions, but for the most part you're an observer, watching people from a purposeful distance. The film starts with a long moment of actual silence, and embraces silence throughout its running time, or something akin to silence. Wood burning, waves crashing, wind moving through grass: this is what you often hear in place of a musical score. When "Silence" is not quiet, you wish that it were, because the soundtrack is filled with moans of pain and screams of agony and the sounds of bones being broken and flame searing flesh. And, of course, during such moments you fear silence, too, because the grave is silent.
The story is simple: two priests ( Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver ) leave Portugal for Japan to find a third priest ( Liam Neeson ) who has gone missing while working as a missionary. The third priest is believed to have committed apostasy by stepping on an image of Jesus Christ after being tormented by the Japanese. Eventually, one of these wandering priests—Garfield's character, Father Sebastião Rodrigues—gets captured and goes through a similar experience, surviving torture and witnessing the torture of others while pondering unanswerable questions: How much suffering can a man take before breaking and renouncing that which is most important to him? If he does break, does it mean he has failed God? Does God want him to resist blasphemy no matter what the cost? Or does he want the priest to give up and renounce his faith, secure in the knowledge that God's love is great enough to forgive him for not being able to endure unendurable pain? Is God indifferent to the suffering? Does He even notice it?
The movie starts with the first priest, Father Cristóvão Ferreira (Neeson), witnessing mass torture of Christians and being told that if he will only commit apostasy, the suffering will cease. The story then jumps forward many years to find Father Rodrigues and his partner, Father Francisco Garrpe (Adam Driver), as they make their way to Japan by way of Macao (with help from a Japanese Christian whose own faith seems reawakened by serving as their guide). The first hour of the film is a somewhat picaresque narrative that slowly builds dread as the priests get closer to figuring out what happened their predecessor. The Japanese authorities don't take kindly to Europeans wandering around their island nation talking about the glories of Jesus. In fact, they see Christianity as a cancer to be cut from the body politic.
In the film's second half, Father Rodrigues finds himself locked in a wooden cage and forced to watch and hear the torture of Japanese Christians—some of whom followed and helped him. He is plagued by doubts, not just about the wisdom of coming to Japan or his capacity to survive this ordeal, but the wisdom of the missionary enterprise, which expects people to suffer and die on behalf of ideals. The priest even begins to wonder what God wants, what He's thinking, and whether He has a point-of-view on misery and pain.
What would Jesus do? A lot of people in Father Rodrigues' position would interpret that as a physical challenge: if Christ withstood the agonies of the cross, I can get through this. But Christ wasn't mortal, so it's an unfair test. But what if the unfairness of the test is the test? And what of the other prisoners in the facility with the priest? All it would take to end their suffering—or so the priest is told—is one footprint on the image of the savior. Is it moral to allow others to suffer when their suffering can be ended with a single symbolic gesture? Would God want that? Maybe the priest is destined to realize that it’s all right to apostatize if it ends the pain of others.
Scorsese and his co-screenwriter Jay Cocks —the two did uncredited rewrites on " The Last Temptation of Christ "—have been accused by some of my colleagues of glorifying the European missionaries, or at least not examining them in a critical enough way. I didn’t get this out of “Silence” at all. In fact, one of the things that impressed me most about it was the care it devotes to understanding the position of the Japanese authorities. Without condoning their brutality, it lets a major character—Inoue Masashige ( Issei Ogata ), one of the officials in charge of eradicating Christianity from Japan, and the supervisor of the hero’s suffering—explain the official point-of-view on Western religion. He doesn’t just consider it a corrupting influence on Japanese culture, he doubts that Christianity can truly take root in the “swamp” (his word) of his home country. There are echoes here of another recurring Scorsese fascination, the self-preservation instinct of the tribe. The tribe may tolerate rebellion, heresy or external threats up to a point, but after that they crack down mercilessly.
Scorsese's respectful distance makes the suffering more unbearable than it would be if he showed every atrocity in close-up. It's unsettling because it conflates the point-of-view of God and the point-of-view of the audience. You're paralyzed. You want to act, or you want the movie to act, to stop the suffering, but the suffering continues until finally it doesn't. We're watching men of God being tested. Try as they might, they cannot entirely wrap their minds around the purpose of the test, and when they do grapple with it, they worry that they've arrived at the wrong conclusion. They worry that they’ve missed the point; that they're not faithful enough or smart enough to understand why this horror exists, or must exist. I don’t know what to think of the ending of the film, which I won’t discuss here except to say that I’ve changed my mind about it many times, and that it seems to be constructed to encourage viewers to come at it again from new angles rather than settling on a single conclusion. This is not the sort of film you “like” or “don't like.” It's a film that you experience and then live with.
Scorsese has been here before, in one sense or another—not just in straightforwardly theological dramas such as " Kundun " and "The Last Temptation of Christ," but in his crime pictures and thrillers as well. The entire running time of "Silence" could be the self-flagellating fantasy of the young hoodlum hero of Scorsese's 1973 breakthrough " Mean Streets " as he holds his hand over a flame (the title character in " Taxi Driver " did the same thing), and the terrors visited upon the priests and their flock are sadistic enough to have come straight from the reptile brain of Max Cady in " Cape Fear ," a devil or demon figure who exists to punish people for the sins of weakness, hypocrisy and pride. But "Silence" foregrounds such things in the manner of a parable that is not intended to lead the listener to a single realization but to stimulate thought and emotion.
This, too, is characteristic of Scorsese, who studied to be a priest but became a monk for cinema, and who nonchalantly describes himself as a "lapsed Catholic" yet has been preoccupied with sin and salvation for nearly 50 years and weaves Christian themes, imagery and situations throughout his work. You even find them in what might otherwise be straightforward commercial genre projects—"Cape Fear," " The Departed " and " The Color of Money " spring to mind—in which Scorsese seems to be using theology to frame his story and characters in ways that he understands, maybe as a way of personalizing a story that's not all that personal otherwise. For a lapsed Catholic he sure does see the entire world in terms of imponderables and spiritual tests. Maybe there’s an alternate reality in which Scorsese became a priest. I bet he was a good one.

Silence 2 Release Time: Remember Manoj Bajpayee and Prachi Desai starrer Silence? The crime drama had released in 2021? The crime drama was a massive hit among the fans and left everyone wanting for more. Besides, Manoj's performance was praised by everyone. And after the phenomenal success of Silence, the makers are finally coming with the second season of the crime drama as Silence 2 and the audience can't keep calm.
Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Prachi Desai, Sahil Vaid, Vaquar Shaikh, Dinker Sharma and Parul Gulati, Silence 2 is directed by Aban Bharucha Deohans. The trailer has given an impressive glimpse of intriguing thriller and the audience can't wait for the crime drama to unfold. To note, Manoj Bajpayee will be seen reprising his role of ACP Avinash Verma in the movie who along with this team will be solving series of murders and are in a race against time.
Silence 2 Release Time
As the trailer has managed to create a massive buzz in the town, fans are looking forward to the release of Silence 2. To note, Silence 2 will be releasing on Zee5 on April 16. As there have been several speculations about the release time of the series, Silence 2 is likely to premiere at midnight on Zee5 tonight.
Talking about how his character has grown in Silence 2, Manoj Bajpayee told English Jagran, "In this sequel, ACP Avinash Verma is portrayed as more comfortable with his team. Unlike in the first installment where they were relatively new to each other, now they are familiar with each other's personalities and work methods. This familiarity brings a sense of calmness to the team dynamics. However, despite this calmness, the intensity of the investigation remains just as high".
On the other hand, director Aban feels that Silence 2 is more complex than the previous season and comes with a deeper layer of drama and investigation.
