The first person in the acquisition of native and second language

26 June 2024, 5:30 pm–7:15 pm

Standing man gestures with both hands while three people listen

Join this event to hear Susanne Herrmann-Sinai discuss Hegel’s Anthropology with a view to learning a first and second language, with reflections on Rousseau as well.

This event is free.

Event Information

Availability.

The process of learning our first language is elusive to our minds, which is striking, given the central status of our linguistic skills and our participation in linguistic practices for our self-understanding.

Drawing on the process of learning a second language and on Rousseau, Susanne will suggest that first language acquisition is closer to the process of second language acquisition than it might initially appear, paralleling Hegel’s talk about ‘magical relationships’ in the context of a mother-child relationship, an early form of intersubjectivity.

This in-person event will be particularly useful for those interested in theories of learning, the philosophy of Hegel and Rousseau and language learning.

PESGB seminar series

This event is part of the  Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain  (PESGB) seminar series. PESGB is a learned society that promotes the study, teaching and application of philosophy of education. Its London Branch hosts seminars every Wednesday in conjunction with the  Centre for Philosophy of Education . These seminars are led by national and international scholars in the field, covering a wide range of issues of educational and philosophical concern.

All are welcome to attend.

Green and orange tents and a student talking into loudspeaker standing on a low wall in front of a university building

UK universities must ‘show leadership’ over Gaza protests, says Gillian Keegan

Education secretary says she wants campuses to be safe places and warns vice-chancellors about escalation

  • Israel-Gaza war – live updates

University vice-chancellors need to “show leadership” in response to student protests over Israel’s military action in Gaza, the education secretary has said.

Gillian Keegan told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme that she wanted “our campuses to be a safe place where students feel welcomed, where students can express different views”.

Pro-Palestine encampments have been set up by students at more than a dozen universities across the UK against the war in Gaza, including in Cambridge and Oxford.

Referring to the encampments, Keegan said: “We have seen how this can escalate very quickly in other countries .” Pro-Palestinian student protesters in the US have clashed with police.

Keegan’s comments came as Rishi Sunak was hosting a meeting at Downing Street with vice-chancellors from leading UK universities on tackling antisemitism. Vice-chancellors from Leeds, Bristol, Middlesex and Sussex were among the first to arrive for the meeting, followed by about 12 more university leaders who all remained silent as they entered Downing Street.

Tents, students and a sign saying ‘stop arming Israel’.

The Union of Jewish Students (UJS) has criticised encampment protests for creating a “hostile and toxic atmosphere” on campus for Jewish students.

In an article for the Times , the prime minister condemned “extremists at the National Union of Students” who, he said, had tried to remove the UJS over its support for the existence of Israel as a state.

The UJS and the Community Security Trust (CST) are among the groups who will attend the summit in Downing Street on Thursday.

Sunak wrote that there were “students and academic staff being targeted, threatened and assaulted simply for being Jewish” and that discussions with vice-chancellors would focus on keeping Jewish students safe.

Keegan told the BBC: “Some university vice-chancellors have taken firm steps and some of the others I think probably need to share what others have done so they can figure out how to deal with this.”

She cited a Community Safety Trust study that suggested there had been a 203% increase in university-related antisemitic incidents in the UK between 2022 and 2023 and said there had been instances of violence on campus.

Keegan told LBC that she had heard directly from Jewish students who felt nervous and intimidated at university. “What we need to do is show real leadership and we need to de-escalate the situation,” she said.

In his article, Sunak wrote: “I understand the strength of feeling over recent events in Israel and Gaza . No one is saying that students should not be able to express the very human angst that many of us feel about the terrible suffering of war.

“We will always protect freedom of speech and the right to protest – and our universities are a natural place for that expression, precisely because they are institutions of learning and exploration where challenging ideas are debated rigorously.

“But just as importantly, universities have a profound duty to remain bastions of tolerance, where such debate takes place with respect for others – and where every student feels safe and at home, whatever their faith or background.”

Ministers will call on university leaders to take immediate disciplinary action if any student is found to be inciting racial hatred or violence and to contact the police if a criminal act has been committed.

Mark Gardner, the chief executive of the CST, said: “The growth of antisemitism on British campuses is appalling and an affront to the fundamental principles and values of university life.

“Everyone has the right to protest, but they do not have the right to disrupt other students’ learning, harass and threaten Jewish students, or spread hatred of Israel with calls for ‘resistance’ and other extremist language.”

Linking London Event - Supporting SEND students into and after Higher Education

When: 16 May 2024, 14:00 — 16:00 Venue: Online

Book your place

While many HEIs can boast an extensive portfolio of support activities designed for SEND students during their studies, the strategies for supporting SEND students before and after their course remain largely underdeveloped. This event aims to address the gap in available support by focusing on the pre- and post-HE parts of SEND students’ journeys.

We will hear from Pedro de Senna and Jack du Pille from Middlesex University, who will discuss “Performance for Futures,” a module developed for the innovative FUTURES project, and delivered to SEND students at Barnet and Southgate College. It involved hands-on and practical sessions, which invited students to “use the future” to inform present thinking about their personal and professional development – including the assessment if higher education is right for them.

We will then hear from Claire Toogood, Research and Insights Manager at AGCAS, and Ann-Marie Hall, Interim Director of Marketing & Communications at Shaw Trust. Recent research from AGCAS shows the continued existence of a disability employment gap in the UK, even for recent graduates. Work from Shaw Trust showcases the student voice through exploration of their lived experience of careers and employability. Claire and Ann-Marie will share key findings from these projects to inform discussion and meaningful action.

During the meeting, partners will have a chance to share good practice and to reflect on how to enhance support for SEND students at their respective institutions. This event, therefore, will be of interest to colleagues responsible for widening participation, IAG, and employability, as well as for colleagues interested in mitigating risks experienced by under-represented student groups.

Texas university leaders say hundreds of positions, programs cut to comply with DEI ban

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas universities eliminated or changed hundreds of jobs in recent months in response to one of the nation’s most sweeping bans on diversity programs on college campuses, school officials told lawmakers Tuesday.

In the fullest public accounting of the new Texas law to date, the head of the University of Texas system announced that its nine academic and five health campuses alone had cut 300 full- and part-time positions. Those campuses combined also did away with more than 600 programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion training.

“You may not like the law, but it is the law,” University of Texas Systems Chancellor James Milliken said.

Milliken was one of several chancellors who GOP state senators called to the Texas Capitol to testify on how campuses are complying with the law signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott last year. Texas is among about one-third of states across the nation that have taken steps to limit or prohibit DEI initiatives and practices.

Republican state Sen. Brandon Creighton, in a letter to chancellors in March, said he was concerned that some campuses were trying to skirt the law or find loopholes, such as renaming employing titles or campus offices.

“This letter should serve as a notice that this practice is unacceptable,” Creighton wrote in the letter.

Republican lawmakers in about two dozen states have filed bills seeking to restrict DEI initiatives this year, according to an Associated Press analysis using the legislation-tracking software Plural. Meanwhile, Democrats have sponsored measures supporting DEI in at least 20 states.

Last month, the flagship University of Texas campus in Austin — one of the largest campuses in the U.S. — announced the closure of the school’s Division of Campus and Community Engagement and the elimination of jobs in order to comply with the ban.

Earlier this year, the University of Florida announced more than a dozen terminations in response to a similar state ban.

Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp told lawmakers the legislation “makes it crystal clear” that “if you tread back into the bad waters, something bad is going to happen to you.”

On Monday, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Board of Trustees approved diverting $2.3 million of state funds for advancing diversity to instead serve public safety and policing. The move comes as North Carolina’s public university system will consider changing its diversity policy before the legislature steps in.

In Oklahoma, the head of the University of Oklahoma’s Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center announced earlier this month that he was forced to terminate its National Education for Women Leadership program because of an anti-DEI executive order signed by Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt last year. The program trained more than 650 women from dozens of colleges and universities across the country over the past 20 years.

“As one of only a handful of women to have held leadership positions in the Legislature since statehood, I believe this program’s elimination is a terrible loss,” said Democratic Oklahoma state Sen. Kay Floyd in a statement.

Associated Press writer Sean Murphy in Oklahoma City contributed to this report.
