Badgerdog Summer Writing Camps

Badgerdog’s Creative Writing Summer Camp is staffed by professional writers who inspire, instruct, and encourage young people to explore the literary arts. We approach writing as a creative pursuit—an outlet for imagination and personal expression. Lessons are designed to be creative, surprising, engaging, and challenging. From 9 a.m. to noon each morning, campers learn through discovery, practice, mentorship, and collaboration.

Workshops are held in three-week sessions across Austin and open to rising 3 rd – through 12 th -graders. Each day, campers encounter the work of classic and contemporary writers, and they study the techniques published writers use to craft artful poetry and prose. Campers author numerous creative pieces in various genres, sharing their work along the way with fellow campers. These summer workshops emphasize all aspects of the writing process, from idea generation to revision to publication, and all campers are invited to publish their best work in Badgerdog’s two professionally bound anthologies— Rise for elementary-age writers and Emerge for middle- and high-school writers.

Each camp session culminates with a reading on-site, where students perform an original poem or story before an audience of fellow writers, parents, family, and friends. At the end of the summer, coinciding with the anthology release, Badgerdog hosts an end-of-summer reading, where selected campers from each workshop perform their work at the annual Texas Teen Book Festival. All summer camp writers are invited to attend and sign books for their fans.

We believe Badgerdog not only helps young people improve their writing skills, but also increases campers’ confidence and improves attitudes towards writing.

Fit N’ Fun Fit N’ Fun camp helps kids develop running skills and fitness through fun activities, games, and play! The camp’s daily structure is: Warm-Up Activities Form-Focus Relays Fitness FUNdamentals Snack/Break Games & Fun-Finish!

Cycle the City Cycle the City Camp is for skilled bikers who can comfortably ride 2 miles on roads and/or trails before a rest stop. CTC Camp starts with a review of biking safety, “rules of the road,” and AYF’s group-riding rules (“riding as a team”). The daily rides range from 5-12 miles, increasing in both distance and difficulty as the week progresses. Badgerdog Creative Writing Camps

Each spring break and summer, Badgerdog hosts writing workshops for rising 3rd- through 12th-graders. These fun and challenging writing workshops allow students to work closely with a professional writer as they explore the arts of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and playwriting. All campers experience the joy of reading, writing, and sharing their original work.

At the end of the summer, all three-week summer camp students will have their work published in one of two professionally produced anthologies—Rise, for elementary-aged writers, and Emerge, for middle- and high-school writers. In the fall, Badgerdog hosts a Young Authors Reading & Anthology Launch, where selected campers perform their work and celebrate the launch of the anthologies. All summer camp writers are invited to attend! For more than 10 years, Badgerdog’s Creative Writing Summer Camp has given Austin youth a space to fall in love with writing, discover authentic self-expression, learn from a professional writer, and publish original work. Girlstart Summer Camp

It’s just rocket science! Join Girlstart this summer for a week-long, full-day STEM camp for girls entering 4th-8th grade in 2023-2024. Rock-About Climbing Adventures

Rock-About believes climbing young can help kids grow and become great adults. Our Austin summer camps are a great way to get your kids outside in a safe way. Rock climbing builds positive interactions with others and teaches them to work together as a team. We offer many kids’ Summer Climbing Camps and a Spring Break camp as well. Camps are for kids 9 and up. No experience is needed, but experienced climbers are encouraged to join also, as we can challenge any level of climber. Our Climbing Camps are day camps that include five great days of climbing at great Texas locations, with two days at the Austin Greenbelt and three days at Reimer’s Ranch. When appropriate and safe, we take the kids swimming after they have climbed in the morning. UT Summer Design Camps

Get ready for another summer of fun and creativity with the School of Design and Creative Technologies! Designed and taught by UT Austin faculty, these courses will allow students from 8th grade through high school to get hands-on experience in a college classroom. These fun, skill-building camps provide students with exposure to new software programs, a chance to explore interests before declaring a major, and an opportunity to build a portfolio piece as they prepare for college applications. Badgerdog offers creative writing workshops for adult writers of all age and skill levels in libraries and community centers across Austin. Some classes offer a broad survey of literary genres and written forms, while others focus specifically on fiction, poetry, or nonfiction. Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary

Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary is a private, non-profit zoo, with over 350 animals across a hundred different species and is a forever home for our rescued animals. Check our website for "Daily Zookeeper Talks" schedule, a map of the zoo, and tips for planning your visit. You can purchase tickets online before you visit!

Zoo memberships and gift certificates are now available. We also offer birthday parties, camps and field trips.

Our outreach programs where we bring the zoo to you can be tailored to fit a variety of age groups and settings. Camp Agape Grief Support

Camp Agape is an innovative camp program designed specifically for children and families who have suffered the loss of a loved one. Our service is available to children between 7 and 12 years of age who are grieving and need support. Camp Agape offers all the fun of a typical summer camp, along with group-therapy activities to assist children with their bereavement process. These activities incorporate the use of art, music, games and play therapies, with the theme of offering true hope for their future. For 2022 Camp is June 26th - 30th.

Rock-About Climbing Adventures

At Rock-About Climbing Adventures our Climbing Camps are day camps include five great days of climbing at great Texas locations. They include two days at the Austin Greenbelt, two days at Reimer’s Ranch, and one day at the great Enchanted Rock. The Enchanted Rock trip also includes going through the really neat cave and climbing. Ages 9 and up. Sportball offers year round programs that encourage kids to stay active with noncompetitive sports instruction for children 16 months to 12 years old. Kids are introduced to 8 popular sports: soccer, hockey, basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, golf & football. School break camps, summer camps and birthday parties also available.

Austin’s favorite and longest-running theater camp for kids is ready to see you take the stage this summer. Join themes from Matilda to The Addams Family (a play!), Encanto to Spider-Verse, Sing 2, Descendants 3, Star Wars, and more... they've got it all. Show Choir camps will perform everyone's favorite pop star's songs in the Swiftly Taylor camp and you can make your own scenes in the Acting for TV and Film camp.

With camps in 18 locations they are just around the corner from home or work!

Looking for a more intensive theatre experience? Newsies JR will be the summer musical production in July/August! This is a 4 week long musical camp running July 10-August 4, with performances August 4-6.

Art, Music & Performance Camps

Arts and music programs help build self-confidence. They help children develop communication and language skills, increase creativity, and improve self-esteem.
