How To Create A Restaurant Pitch Deck (Examples Included)

Elana Kroon

Struggling to create a restaurant pitch deck that attracts investors?

This straightforward guide unpacks the key components your pitch deck demands, from defining your restaurant’s vision and business approach to presenting actionable financials.

With this article, you’ll draft a no-nonsense pitch that captures your venture’s essence and demonstrates why it deserves investment.

Key Takeaways

A pitch deck is important for securing funding, conveying your restaurant’s vision, unique features, and the experience you promise, and it must compellingly represent your business plan in a concise format.

Key elements of an effective pitch deck include a clear concept, target market, customer profile, and a unique selling proposition that makes your restaurant stand out, supported by both storytelling and strong visual design.

Financial projections, detailed growth strategies, marketing and brand positioning plans, and a prepared response to potential investor questions and objections are essential components to illustrate your restaurant’s potential for profitability and investor returns.

The essence of a restaurant pitch deck

A restaurant interior with stylish decor and ambient lighting

A restaurant pitch deck is:

A visual feast

A storytelling journey

An introduction to your restaurant concept for potential investors

More than just a collection of slides

A window into the soul of your restaurant

Showcasing the vision, potential, and unique features of your venture

An opportunity to share your passion for food and service

Conveying your restaurant’s vibe and experience in a compelling way

A well-designed pitch deck can be the tipping point in securing the necessary funding to launch or expand your restaurant.

Your pitch deck should aim to pique investor interest in your concept. It must convincingly outline your restaurant’s potential for growth and why it’s a sound investment.

Your pitch deck should be a concise version of your business plan, a roadmap that guides potential investors on a tour of your restaurant’s vision.

It’s not just about serving quality meals; it’s about crafting a unique dining experience, a brand positioning that makes your restaurant unique.

Key ingredients for a winning pitch deck

A colorful and vibrant outdoor food market

A winning pitch deck, much like a signature dish, requires a blend of key ingredients. It begins with a clear concept and vision, a well-defined target market and customer profile, and a unique selling proposition that sets your restaurant apart.

These components serve as the main courses of your pitch deck, providing potential investors with a taste of what’s to come.

We’ll now delve into these important elements and their role in shaping an impressive restaurant pitch deck.

Concept and vision

Your pitch deck commences with your concept and vision. It’s the foundation upon which your restaurant stands, the driving force behind your journey.

Your concept introduces the theme of your restaurant, whether it’s a cozy vegan café or a high-end steakhouse. Your vision and mission statement communicate your restaurant’s overarching goals and purpose, painting a picture of the future you strive to create.

The charm is in the details. Here are some ways to improve your restaurant’s appeal:

Highlight your menu’s star dishes

Showcase any sustainable practices or innovative features

Create a well-crafted brand identity using a select color palette

Outline community engagement strategies that align with your restaurant’s commitment to building patron relationships

After all, a restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a hub for community interaction and memorable experiences in the restaurant industry, especially at local restaurants.

Target market and customer profile

Following this, we focus on your target market and customer profile. Understanding who your customers are and what they value is essential in tailoring your restaurant experience to their tastes.

A clear understanding of your target market, backed by solid market research, helps you craft a menu, pricing, and concept that resonate with your audience.

Your pitch deck should include a detailed analysis of demographic details such as age, gender, income, education, and location, as well as psychographic factors such as values, interests, and attitudes.

This detailed profile of your target audience allows you to tap into their preferences and build a brand that truly speaks to them. Remember, specifically stating the target market and the opportunity in the pitch deck, including the unique location and scarcity of similar establishments, is vital.

Unique selling proposition (USP)

Let’s transition to your pitch deck’s secret weapon - the Unique Selling Proposition (USP). Your USP is the primary reason your restaurant stands out from the crowd, the unique benefits, and solutions you offer that your competitors don’t. It’s the magic ingredient that makes your restaurant memorable to investors.

To showcase your USP in a pitch deck, you need to clearly communicate what makes your restaurant unique and worth investing in. Perhaps it’s your innovative menu, your sustainable practices, or your technological innovations.

Whatever it is, make sure your USP aligns with market gaps or emerging trends, and don’t be afraid to use evocative language and specific examples to convey your restaurant’s unique value proposition.

The art of pitch deck storytelling

Pitch decks are more than just facts and figures; they’re stories waiting to be told. The art of pitch deck storytelling revolves around creating a relatable character and a story that builds tension before presenting the solution.

This narrative technique can make your pitch deck presentation more memorable, engaging, and 22 times more likely to stick in an investor’s mind during a pitch meeting.

Your passion and pride for your restaurant should shine through your pitch deck. Personal stories and anecdotes can pique interest and build loyalty, emphasizing the whole experience rather than just the business aspect. Address investor concerns about scalability and the problem being solved, presenting a clear and logically structured narrative.

Keep in mind that your compelling restaurant pitch deck is more than a mere presentation; it’s an inspiring narrative that can fuel a desire to join your restaurant’s journey, much like an effective elevator pitch.

Designing a visually appealing pitch deck

A well-designed and visually appealing pitch deck on a tablet

An excellent pitch deck isn’t just about the information it contains; it’s also about how that information is presented.

Design and visuals significantly enhance the overall experience of a pitch deck, making it more appealing and memorable.

The ideal design focuses on key points, ensures elements are not cluttered, and uses charts and diagrams for data visualization.

We’ll delve into these facets in the subsequent subsections.

Choosing the right visuals

The right visuals can bring your pitch deck to life. They set the mood, engage the audience, and help tell your restaurant’s story.

Using original photography and stock photos that accurately reflect your brand is key to creating a visually appealing pitch deck.

These images, whether they’re of your mouthwatering dishes or your cozy dining space, can immediately capture investors’ attention.

Visualizing data with charts, graphs, and clear layouts aids in emphasizing key figures and making complex information easier to digest.

Differentiating sections with compelling images and strategic use of white space can improve the pitch deck’s visual appeal and maintain professionalism.

Keep in mind that your visuals are more than just images; they serve as potent storytelling tools that can forge a bond with investors.

Creating a consistent design

Consistency in design not only exhibits professionalism but also signals to investors the meticulous attention to detail that your business applies in all of its operations.

Maintaining a uniform color scheme, typography, and visual elements across your pitch deck is essential to reinforce your brand identity and convey a professional narrative.

A cohesive design strategy not only makes your pitch deck more engaging and easier to follow but also showcases your team’s attention to detail and project dedication.

Using templates that incorporate brand themes and employing whitespace effectively can save time while achieving a consistent look. Remember, your pitch deck’s design should cater to your audience’s preferences, with templates and visuals adapted to suit their expectations and tastes.

Presenting your team and expertise

A diverse team of professionals discussing business strategies in a modern office

Behind every successful restaurant is a dedicated team of professionals.

Presenting your team and their expertise in your pitch deck is an opportunity to highlight their skills, their passion, and their commitment to your restaurant’s vision.

Here are some tips for showcasing your key team members:

Include professional headshots of each team member

Provide a brief bio for each team member, highlighting their experience and qualifications

Use real human images to establish authenticity and build trust with investors

By compellingly showcasing your team, you can demonstrate the strength and potential of your restaurant to investors.

Each key member’s role, expertise, and notable successes should be featured, emphasizing their ability to execute the vision and their relevance to the restaurant’s success.

Logos from well-known former employers or educational institutions can immediately convey high standards of professionalism and achievement. A thoughtful team presentation bolsters credibility, brings a human touch to the business, showcases domain expertise, strengthens commitment, and builds investor confidence.

  • Case Study: Putting Your Staff First

Financial projections and growth strategy

Numbers speak volumes in a pitch deck. Your financial projections and growth strategy provide concrete evidence of your restaurant’s potential for profitability and expansion.

Here are the key financial documents that should be included in your pitch deck:

Revenue projections

Expense forecasts

Cash flow statements

Profit and loss projections

Operational metrics

These projections need to convey financial viability through strong revenue growth and manageable costs, backed by reasonable and credible assumptions.

But it’s not just about the numbers. Your growth strategy should detail:

Market expansion

Scalability

Unique growth opportunities

Sustainability during growth

Alignment with your restaurant’s vision

It should also tie into your marketing strategy and future plans. Investors are interested in not only your current position but also your future direction and your strategies to reach there.

Showcasing marketing and brand positioning

Marketing and brand positioning are key ingredients in your pitch deck. Demonstrating an understanding of the competitive landscape and specifying marketing and outreach initiatives planned to promote your restaurant are crucial components of your pitch deck.

Your marketing and sales strategy should be clearly outlined, showing tactics like:

advertising

email marketing

loyalty programs

This will illustrate how your business model plans to attract and retain customers.

Visual representation of competitive analysis, such as an XY graph, can help position your restaurant uniquely in the market, conveying your brand’s competitive advantage to investors.

Your brand positioning should illustrate not only your uniqueness but also your superior offerings. It should highlight the unique benefits and solutions that your restaurant offers, setting you apart from your competitors.

Preparing for investor questions and objections

Investors are likely to have questions and objections about your restaurant venture. Preparing for these questions not only highlights your strengths but also addresses concerns and builds rapport with potential investors.

During a pitch, objections can be used as opportunities to engage further and clarify points with investors, through confidence and sincerity, without becoming defensive.

Practicing the pitch extensively and being prepared with answers helps mitigate the common mistake of failing to anticipate questions or feedback from investors. Encouraging investors to ask questions can lead to a more productive dialogue and allow you to demonstrate adaptability.

Even if an investor doesn’t commit immediately, making a positive impression with useful information can pave the way for future consideration.

Restaurant pitch deck examples for inspiration

A chef preparing a signature dish in a restaurant kitchen

Looking at successful restaurant pitch deck examples can provide valuable insights and inspiration. Whether it’s a farm-to-table concept that emphasizes sustainable and local sourcing or an authentic Japanese sushi bar that offers a unique cultural dining experience , these pitch decks can serve as a blueprint for your own.

The use of high-quality images depicting mouthwatering dishes can immediately capture investors’ attention. Incorporating design elements that reflect your restaurant’s theme, such as rustic imagery for a country-style eatery, can help your pitch deck tell the visual story of your restaurant.

But perhaps the most compelling element of these successful pitch decks is the narrative, such as:

the story of a chef’s personal journey to opening their dream restaurant

the inspiration behind the restaurant concept

the unique selling points of the menu and dining experience

the potential for growth and profitability

Including a well-crafted narrative in your pitch deck can help investors connect with your vision and increase the likelihood of securing funding for your restaurant.

Fine-tuning your pitch deck: best practices and common mistakes

Fine-tuning your pitch deck is a crucial step in the process.

A perfect pitch deck should:

Be no more than 10-15 pages or slides

Have a clean, professional design that organizes content and presents visuals in a compelling way

Integrate storytelling to create an emotional connection and make it more memorable

Increase investment potential

The final slide of your pitch deck should leave a strong impact. Instead of ending with a generic ‘Questions?’ slide, consider summarizing your key points or emphasizing the opportunity.

Your pitch deck represents an opportunity to create a lasting impression and inspire potential investors with your vision and passion. Don’t let this opportunity slide away. To make it even more professional, consider using Google Slides for creating your pitch deck.

In the bustling world of the restaurant industry, a compelling pitch deck can make all the difference.

It’s not just a presentation; it’s a storytelling journey that introduces your restaurant concept to potential investors. It’s a snapshot of your vision, a preview of the gastronomic experience you’re about to bring to the table.

From defining your concept and vision, understanding your target market, and articulating your unique selling proposition, to integrating storytelling, designing visually appealing slides, and preparing for investor questions, every aspect of your pitch deck contributes to making your restaurant venture a success.

But remember, a pitch deck is just the beginning. It’s the first step in a journey filled with passion, dedication, and hard work.

With a well-crafted pitch deck, you can not only secure funding but also inspire others with your vision. So, get out there, start crafting your pitch deck, and let’s bring your dream restaurant to life.

How to build a restaurant pitch deck

presentation ticket restaurant

Whether the business plan is in the beginning stages or the prep work has begun for a large investor meeting, creating a pitch deck is often a crucial step in opening a restaurant. It’s a sales pitch for attracting investors. Once you’ve decided on the restaurant concept, start thinking of how you, as the restaurant owner, want to sell potential partners on the vision.

A pitch deck is a concise, visual version of your business plan. It allows potential investors to easily follow along with the concept throughout the duration of the presentation. The best business plans are ripe with material. But many lose their impact due to an information overload—too many words and not enough graphics.

Time is limited in a pitch meeting, so it’s imperative that the vision is clear and concisely communicated from the start.

Quick links How to design your deck Building out the presentation

How to design your deck

A well-designed pitch deck illustrates key points and helps potential investors understand the restaurant’s goals. To ensure the deck makes an impact:

  • Decide on a platform: There are plenty of free platforms that can help build out a pitch deck with ease. Google Slides offers free, customizable slideshow templates that you can use to collaborate with the restaurant designer. Canva is another great option if the restaurant is looking for a larger portfolio of templates. Just be sure that the restaurant’s brand identity matches whatever template you choose.
  • Keep it short: The deck should be no more than 10-15 pages (printed) or slides (digital presentation)
  • Use your business plan: The business materials should all share a cohesive and obvious vision for the restaurant. Treat the business plan as an outline for the pitch deck, with one slide representing one section. Repeat the exact words in both documents for more important sections (like describing the concept).
  • Less is more: Remember, the pitch deck should complement the business plan with visuals. Limit slides to 10 words each for maximum impact. The goal is to talk through—not read—the slides. Remember, the pitch deck is meant to be an overview. Potential investors can dive into the business plan to find further details on financial projections or all of the dishes on the sample menu.
  • Visuals are key: Think of the key audience—potential investors and potential guests—when building out the presentation and incorporate images that will engage them. If possible, include original photography that shows off the staff, the space, and illustrates dishes in development. Otherwise, use stock photos that reflect the restaurant brand and what it hopes to do. Feel free to include both types of visuals; whatever best represents the restaurant’s vibe.
  • Be cohesive: Keep the entire deck sharp, professional, and on brand. Make sure that it aligns with the business plan and all other marketing materials. Conflicting statements could result in a red flag for investors so be clear with expectations and goals from the start.

Building out the presentation

After you’ve outlined the pitch deck, start thinking about how to portray the restaurant. Think of the pitch deck as more than just the content on the slides—it’s an opportunity to demonstrate the entire restaurant vibe and experience.

  • Start with the elevator pitch: Off the bat, introduce what this restaurant is going to be. The elevator pitch should be under a minute and should succinctly describe the theme of the presentation.
  • Make sure to touch on: who the target guest is, what the experience will be, when you’ll meet key deadlines, where the location will be, why the restaurant is unique, and how it’ll come to fruition.
  • Make it personal: Anecdotes can be a business owner’s best friend in an otherwise technical pitch. Take the time to clearly explain what makes this restaurant different and don’t be afraid to share personal stories. Adding in personal touches will not only help pique an investor’s interest, but can help build brand loyalty with guests later on.
  • Show the research: The pitch deck can include minimal text while also highlighting statistics. Be sure to demonstrate an understanding of the target market and examine key competitors. Investors will want to know how the restaurant intends to reach new customers and stand out from the competition.

You’ve done your homework—explain that there is a clear plan to adapt when facing adversity and provide solutions that illustrate this. Touch on the marketing strategy and direct investors back to the business plan for further details.

  • Have some fun with it: This is the moment to let the restaurant shine. The pitch should always be professional, but is also a great opportunity to illustrate what the restaurant is all about. Introduce investors to the team, include a mood board, even consider sampling some concept dishes.

Once the deck is built, begin preparations to present it. Getting potential investors in the room can be the most difficult part of opening a restaurant. Make the most of this time by preparing for every scenario.

Start by sharing the business plan with people who are experts in areas that you’re not. Critical feedback is a vital part of opening and growing a successful restaurant. Ask trusted friends and colleagues to look over the business plan and pitch deck to see where it might’ve fallen short. It’s hard to see the big picture from inside the frame.

Take the time to rehearse the deck. Have advisors ask new questions on the spot to prepare for any that might arise during the actual presentation. And while every run through might go smoothly, remember that investors will ask high stakes questions that you might not know the answer to. Use the pitch meeting as a learning opportunity and incorporate constructive feedback after the fact.

On the day of, bring a digital version and hard copy of the pitch deck to meetings. If there’s a technology fluke, it ensures there’s a back up so the presentation can move forward as planned.

Lastly, bring the passion. This presentation and pitch deck are a representation of the restaurant brand. Demonstrate that it’s something to be proud of. An exhibition of enthusiasm can inspire potential investors to get involved and an illustrative pitch deck can establish why this restaurant business is the one to bet on.

How to Design a Restaurant Ticket?

Restaurants are perhaps one of the most profitable businesses out there. According to the National Restaurant Asociation, the restaurant sector had a revenue of 863 billion dollars in 2019. Promotional materials like pamphlets, posters and tickets have played a role in the industry's success. If you are looking to design something like a restaurant ticket, you can check some of the tickets below.

1. Establish the Ticket's Purpose

Before you begin with the design phase of the ticket, you must first have a clear idea of what the ticket's purpose is. As the restaurant manager or the restaurant's graphic designer, you must be aware of what the ticket is for. If you are the latter, it's important to ask your client about the use of the ticket because it will give clarity.

2. Choose a Theme for the Ticket

Choosing a theme for the ticket will be easy once you know of its purpose. The theme that you will decide on will be the guide for the graphic design elements of the ticket, so be careful when choosing one.

3. Gather Visual Materials

With the theme as a guide and reference , you can now gather the visual materials that you might need for the ticket's design. Look for photos, images and color schemes that are in line with your theme.

4. Choose a Suitable Font Style and Font Size

Your restaurant ticket will not be complete with the font style and font size. Let the theme you chose to guide you when choosing a font style. The reason for this is that you want all the visual elements to unite under the theme you chose.

5. Add Security Features

To ensure that the ticket you are designing is secure and no one can easily make a fake to exploit it, you should put security features. There are varying security features you can place in the design, for example, holograms, barcodes and serial numbers. All of these makes the replication of tickets difficult if not impossible.

  • être comprise entre 50 et 60% de la valeur nominale du titre ;

Love the concept (street food in Japan the best!), but expected Japanese sticky rice and grilled chicken for the teriyaki (asked a friend to get for me without looking at menu, because had never seen teriyaki chicken deep fried). Open to trying other items though!

Michelin Guide announces the BEST restaurants in Moscow

Twins Garden brother chefs Ivan and Sergei Berezutsky receive two Michelin stars and a Michelin green star during a ceremony held at the Zaryadye Concert Hall to award Michelin stars to Moscow restaurants and chefs.

Twins Garden brother chefs Ivan and Sergei Berezutsky receive two Michelin stars and a Michelin green star during a ceremony held at the Zaryadye Concert Hall to award Michelin stars to Moscow restaurants and chefs.

“Moscow has many stars, but no Michelin stars yet,” joked Sergei Sobyanin, the city’s mayor, at the opening ceremony of the Michelin edition of Moscow. The capital has great historical gastronomic roots. Merchants and noblemen laid down their last ruble to treat guests with dignity. In Soviet times, many traditions were lost and first-class restaurants turned into Soviet canteens. In the 1990s, Russia and Moscow began to catch up and hundreds of good restaurants appeared which surprised guests with the sophistication of their dishes.

Moscow became the first city in the CIS with restaurants and cafes awarded with stars and other Michelin trophies, while Russia became the 33rd country in the world to join.

Why is the guide coming to Russia now?

According to Gwendal Poullennec, international director of Michelin guides, work on the Moscow guide started five years ago. Experts of the Guide visited restaurants anonymously and evaluated them according to international standards, analysing several criteria: quality of food, combination of flavors, chef’s skill, price and quality, regularity of restaurant’s work. The pandemic made a difference in the evaluation process and the announcement of the results.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of Michelin guides.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of Michelin guides.

“This project was a challenge for all of us because of the pandemic, travel restrictions and event cancellations. But, we got it done in the end. We are happy to say that Moscow, as one of the cities for gastronomic tourism, has great prospects in terms of its development. The city certainly has its own culinary identity; many chefs work with local products, carefully preserving the culinary heritage of their region. The first Moscow edition will include 69 restaurants,” Gwendal Pullenek said at the guide’s presentation in Moscow on October 14. According to him, this is just the beginning, which should support the restaurant industry.

Two Stars: The best of the best

Two restaurants in Moscow have been awarded two Michelin stars. The award means that the restaurant is so good that it is worth visiting, even if it is not up your street (or fit your budget!).

Ivan and Sergey Berezutsky, Twins Garden.

Two stars went to ‘Twins Garden’ restaurant, headed by brothers Ivan and Sergey Berezutsky. Twins Garden has won a number of international awards and in October it was ranked 30th on The World’s Best 50 Restaurants list. The brothers promote the symbiosis of science and nature and most of the products in the restaurant come from their farm.

The second restaurant in this category was ‘ARTEST - Chef’s Table’, a new (open since February 2021) fine dining restaurant by chef Artem Yestafiev and restaurateur Arkady Novikov.

Estafiev recently moved to Moscow from St. Petersburg, but has already managed to win over the Moscow public with his approach to gastronomy. The chef pays special attention to local products, uses wild and rare mushrooms. Before joining ARTEST, he trained at the restaurant of French chef Alain Ducasse, whose establishments have been awarded Michelin stars more than once.

One Star: It’s worth visiting!

Seven restaurants in the capital have been awarded one Michelin star.

Among them:

- ‘Selfie’, a restaurant of auteur cuisine headed by chef Anatoly Kazakov (one of the top 100 chefs in the international ‘The Best Chef Awards 2021’ ranking);

- ‘Beluga’ restaurant of Russian delicacies, where you can taste two dozen kinds of caviar, enjoy the stunning view of Red Square and indulge in the explosive menu by Chef Evgeny Vikentyev;

Green Stars

The Michelin Guide gives this award to the restaurants that care about conscious consumption, the reduction of food waste and take into account seasonality. The restaurants Biologie (chef - Ekaterina Alekhina), Twins Garden (Berezutsky brothers) and the northern cuisine restaurant ‘Bjorn’ (Nikita Poderyagin) in Moscow all received a Michelin Green Star.

Good food for reasonable money

Fifteen restaurants made the BIB Gourmand list, where you can have a delicious meal for 2,000 rubles (approx. $28). Among them are ‘Sevicheria’, ‘Delicatessen’, ‘Bjorn’, ‘Eva’, ‘Erwin.RekaMoreOkean’, ‘Flor’, ‘Geraldine’, ‘Hibiki’, ‘Kazbek’, ‘Lucky Izakaya bar’, ‘Rybtorg’, ‘Tilda’, ‘Ugolek’, ‘Vani’ and ‘Uilliams’.

Another 45 restaurants also made the Michelin Guide’s list of recommendations.

Click It or Ticket Kickoff Event

Sophie Shulman, NHTSA Deputy Administrator

Washington, D.C.

Good morning, and thank you for joining me as we kick off this year’s Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign.

Seat belts save lives – it’s that simple.

But your seat belt can only save your life if you’re wearing it. More than 11,000 people killed in crashes in 2022 weren’t wearing their seat belts.

That’s why we’re joining with law enforcement agencies nationwide to launch this year’s Click It or Ticket campaign, with a special focus on rural areas and nighttime use.

And we have new data that show why we’re focusing on these areas. We’re seeing a disturbing trend of people choosing not to wear their seat belts at night. In 2022, 57 percent of occupants killed in crashes were unrestrained – 14 percent more than during the day. And more occupants killed in rural traffic crashes at night were unbuckled, as compared to those in urban areas.

We also see trends in the types of vehicles where people are less likely to be buckled up in a fatal crash. Pickup trucks – very common in rural areas – have the highest rate of unbuckled drivers and passengers. In 2022, 61 percent of drivers killed in pickups were unrestrained, as compared to 46 percent of passenger car drivers.

So, no matter where you live, what you drive, or what time of day it is – please, buckle up for every trip, every time.

Advertising for our Click It or Ticket campaign started Monday and will run through June 2, reminding drivers and passengers to always buckle up. Our $11.2 million public awareness campaign includes TV, radio, digital and social media ads in both English and Spanish.

In addition to rural areas and nighttime, we are also focusing on passenger vehicle occupants 18 to 34 years old. We’re especially looking to reach men in that age group, as they are most likely to be involved in a fatal unbelted crash.

We are also partnering with state and local law enforcement agencies to help spread this lifesaving message. From May 20 to June 2, officers will be out on the roads, reminding drivers of the importance of wearing a seat belt and of local seat belt laws.

And we expect them to conduct all of their activities in support of this campaign in a fair and equitable manner. After all, the goal is to save lives and prevent unthinkable tragedies.

No matter where you’re going, where you live, or how short or long your trip will be – the seat belt is the best tool you have to protect yourself in a crash.

So please, remember: Click It or Ticket . The consequences of not wearing your seat belt could be a ticket – or it could be your life.

Markets Keep Rising Despite Inflation Concerns

Stocks on both sides of the Atlantic set records as investors foresee interest rates moving in one direction: down.

By Andrew Ross Sorkin ,  Ravi Mattu ,  Bernhard Warner ,  Sarah Kessler ,  Michael J. de la Merced ,  Lauren Hirsch and Ephrat Livni

Two traders holding tablets stand on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

Inflation euphoria goes global

Stocks in Asia and parts of Europe rose on Thursday as investors bet that new data showing inflation easing would finally persuade central bankers to lower interest rates from multidecade highs. The rally has pushed stock indexes on both sides of the Atlantic into record territory .

Another test comes on Thursday when Walmart, a bellwether for U.S. consumer sentiment, reports quarterly results.

The market moves follow Wednesday’s Consumer Price Index report, which came in better than expected. The data showed that so-called core inflation, which strips out volatile food and fuel costs, rose by 3.6 percent on an annual basis last month, the lowest level in three years .

Inflation remains well above the Fed’s 2 percent target, but traders were encouraged by the results. The futures market now sees two Fed rate cuts this year, the first most likely coming in September.

Economists’ main takeaways from the report:

The good: Grocery, auto and airfare inflation eased.

The concerning: Housing inflation, a huge driver of the overall rate, showed only a modest improvement.

The puzzling: The Bureau of Labor Statistics accidentally published the data on the web ahead of schedule. But there were no obvious signs that traders (or their bots) had tried to profit from that mistake, with markets fairly quiet until just after 8:30 a.m. Eastern, the expected release time.

The S&P 500 is up more than 11 percent this year , blowing past most analysts’ 2024 forecasts. At the start of the year, the Wall Street consensus was for inflation to steadily ease, rate cuts to start as soon as the spring andmarkets to rally modestly. Stubbornly high inflation upended that prediction — yet stocks have outperformed many of even the most bullish predictions.

Stronger-than-expected corporate earnings have helped, despite concerns about consumers pulling back on spending. Another factor: The Fed has all but ruled out raising rates, giving investors the sense that monetary policy will be no more restrictive than it is today.

The market rally has been a bonanza for Wall Street. Ken Griffin’s Citadel Securities, a giant market maker, collected about $2.3 billion in trading revenue in the first quarter, according to Bloomberg , putting it on pace for a record year.

The market exuberance isn’t universally shared. Some economists, as well as policymakers like the Minneapolis Fed president, Neel Kashkari (a nonvoting member this year), reiterated that more data like Wednesday’s was needed before the central bank could feel confident that inflation was under control.

Roger Aliaga-Diaz, an economist at Vanguard, was more blunt. Inflation is still too high, he wrote in an investor note on Wednesday, adding that he believes the Fed is unlikely to cut rates this year.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Berkshire Hathaway reveals its mystery holding. Warren Buffett’s conglomerate disclosed on Wednesday that it had built a $6.7 billion stake in the insurer Chubb , after having requested confidential treatment about the investment from the S.E.C. for months. It ended a guessing game on Wall Street about what the Oracle of Omaha had been up to; shares in Chubb were up nearly 8 percent in premarket trading on Thursday.

Vladimir Putin meets with Xi Jinping in Beijing. The visit by Putin, Russia’s president, is meant to bolster support for his full-scale invasion of Ukraine and to pull the countries even closer together against the United States. Xi said their countries were “a model for a new type of international relations,” though he is under growing diplomatic and economic pressure to halt support for Moscow.

Microsoft has reportedly asked China-based employees to relocate. The tech giant has asked hundreds of staff members — most of whom are Chinese nationals — who work on cloud computing and artificial intelligence to consider transferring out of the country amid tensions between Washington and Beijing, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Why Wall Street donors are coming around on Trump

Donald Trump trails President Biden in fund-raising , and much of the money that Trump has raised is going toward his growing legal fees.

But there are signs that he may be able to close that gap. Donors from Wall Street and beyond are warming up to the former president after turning on him over his leadership style and the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, The Times’s Rob Copeland writes.

Unhappiness with Biden is pushing some to reconsider their allegiances. Many donors aren’t exactly excited about Trump: “I still hate the man,” one hedge fund billionaire told The Times. And Trump faces multiple legal fights, including a hush-money trial in New York.

But these figures are increasingly frustrated by Biden’s economic, regulatory and immigration policies. Another point of contention is the White House’s hardening stance on Israel in its war in Gaza.

A prominent example is Ken Griffin. The hedge fund mogul is one the biggest donors to Republicans, but as recently as 2022 derided Trump as a “three-time loser.”

Griffin’s attitude appears to be changing: He told The Times that he’s now “giving serious consideration” to backing Trump, and he and his camp have told the Trump campaign that they’re waiting to see whom the former president picks as his running mate.

Trump also sees opportunities in Silicon Valley. The venture capitalist David Sacks is hosting a fund-raiser at his home on June 6, according to Puck, with attendees including the fellow financier and podcast host Chamath Palihapitiya. And Palmer Luckey , the founder of the virtual reality company Oculus and the defense tech supplier Anduril, will host a fund-raiser on June 8.

That said, Biden last week raised millions during a West Coast fund-raising trip , which included events hosted by the former Yahoo chief Marissa Mayer and the venture capitalist Vinod Khosla.

Europe goes after Meta

European regulators are going after Big Tech again. The European Union opened an investigation on Thursday into whether Meta’s hugely popular products are addictive for children.

The case, which carries a potentially big fine, could have wide-ranging implications for how the company designs apps like Instagram and Facebook, The Times’s Adam Satariano writes.

Regulators say children could be at risk. The European Commission, the E.U.’s executive arm, said the company’s social media platforms could “exploit the weaknesses and inexperience of minors” to make them dependent on the tech. The regulators said they had been in contact with their U.S. counterparts.

The apps’ designs could violate the bloc’s Digital Services Act. The landmark 2022 law requires that online platforms police content and mitigate any risks to minors. Users under 13 shouldn’t be able to create an account; the investigators said they would also look into Meta’s age-verification tools.

“We will now investigate in-depth the potential addictive and ‘rabbit hole’ effects of the platforms,” said Thierry Breton, the E.U.’s internal markets commissioner, who is overseeing the investigations.

Meta has consistently said its products are safe for young people. The company did not immediately comment on the new investigation. The company has already made changes to its products to comply with the European law, including blocking targeted ads to children.

The impact of social media on children is high on the political agenda. Governments worldwide are looking to regulate services like TikTok and Instagram, accusing companies of using recommendation algorithms to keep young people glued to their devices — and serve them ads.

And a wave of academics including Jonathan Haidt , an N.Y.U. professor and psychologist, argues that too much exposure to social media is a health risk for adolescents.

It’s the latest effort by European regulators to rein in Big Tech. Last month, the E.U. opened an investigation into Meta over its handling of Russian disinformation . TikTok pulled a version of its app in Europe after E.U. officials raised concerns that some of its features were addictive.

Meta could be fined up to 6 percent of its global revenue if the company is found to have violated the D.S.A.

Streamers flex their muscle at the upfronts

In years past, the upfronts — broadcasters’ presentations to major advertisers — were the domain of traditional media companies as they unveiled their fall television lineups.

But this year’s beauty pageant reflected the growing power of players like Netflix and Amazon, whose announcements about programming largely stole the show. The technology giants are hoping to seize more ad dollars as advertising becomes a bigger source of their revenue .

Netflix is pushing further into live sports. The streaming platform said it would show at least one Christmas Day N.F.L. game for the next three years. (One of them will feature the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, which has seen its global popularity soar because of the Taylor Swift factor .)

The package — for which Netflix is reportedly paying $75 million per game — reflects the company’s efforts to expand its live sports offerings without getting into the hugely expensive bidding wars that its competitors engage in.

Netflix also announced that its ad-supported tier had hit 40 million monthly active users , up from just five million a year ago.

Amazon made its first appearance at the upfronts, joining Netflix and YouTube, in a signal of its streaming ambitions . (The presentation came as Amazon prepares to start showing ads on its Prime Video service). Amazon’s star-studded show featured celebrities including Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell and Jake Gyllenhaal, all of whom star in content airing on Prime Video.

Like Netflix, Amazon also promoted its sports programming, including a third season of N.F.L. games and coming documentaries about stars like the racecar driver Dale Earnhardt and the tennis icon Roger Federer.

Presidential debate news underscored the heft of traditional TV. ABC and CNN announced on Wednesday that they had each scored a face-off between Biden and Trump in perhaps the biggest TV programming coup of the year . (The former CNN chief Jeff Zucker praised the network, predicting that its June 27 debate would be “the most-watched event, day, night, in the history of CNN.”)

The debates came together incredibly quickly, according to The Times: Mark Thompson, CNN’s chair, was about to go onstage for the upfront presentation by his network’s parent, Warner Bros. Discovery, when he got the news. He quickly rewrote his remarks.

In other upfront news: Bob Iger, Disney’s chief, said that his media company had overspent in the streaming wars . “Basically we invested too much, way ahead of possible returns,” he said.
