How Much Does a Lutron System Cost? Why Is Lutron So Expensive?
I was recently shopping for smart switches so I could swap out an old switch that only turns the lights on and off. I wanted to be able to add some home automation so that the switch would turn on and off based on certain activities.
Lutron was one of the brands I looked at, and I really noticed the price difference between some of the competitors. I could get one Lutron Caseta switch, or I could get three TP-Link switches for the same price. That got me thinking.
Why Is Lutron So Expensive?!
Lutron products are so expensive because they are the highest quality available and made in the USA. Lutron is the gold standard. Lutron is expensive because of the amount they invest into research and development creating the product, and the level of support they provide to consumers and contractors.
Ask anyone who has used Lutron devices, and they will tell you that Lutron is the best. There is nothing better, and most people say, “It Just Works!”. Let’s take a closer look at what their quality and reputation look like, how much it cost, and how much more it cost over the competition.

What Makes Lutron Expensive?
Lutron has five principals that are the basis of their business decisions. The principals can be found on Lutron’s website here, but here is a copy for reference:

At least 3 of those 5 principals are related to making high-quality, superior products. In order to do that, Lutron has to spend money in hiring quality employees, and funding research and development. That cost gets passed on to the customer.
What Is a Lutron System?
Lutron designs and manufactures lighting shade and temperature control systems. These range from residential dimmer switches all the way up to automated and timer controlled whole-building systems. Lutron creates products for residential and commercial customers.

So, what is a Lutron system?
Lutron systems range from residential systems providing smart lighting, temperature, and shade control for the whole home to commercial systems that can manage lighting controls, motorized window shades, digital ballasts and LED drivers, occupancy sensors, and light sensors.
Lutron has several brands that it sells to customers. The brand that most people looking into smart lighting are familiar with is called Lutron Caseta.
Lutron Caseta may seem expensive when compared to other smart lighting controls, but it turns out Caseta is the starter level for Lutron. Remember, Lutron only produces quality products, so even their low-end brand is going to be some of the best performing on the market.
Lutron actually classifies Caseta as “Single Room Controls”, although you can have up to 75 Caseta devices in a single home. Many people do use Caseta devices for their whole home. I’ll classify Caseta as a whole home system for the sake of this article.

All the brands above Caseta are designed to be professionally installed, although you can find RA2 Select starter kits if you search hard enough. (Like here at lightinghomes.com . I do not have any experience with that company and do not endorse them.) You will need to go to Lutron’s website and find a contractor (click here ). How Much Does a Lutron System Cost?
The cost of a Lutron system varies greatly depending on what series you choose.
A Lutron Caseta system starts at $100. The next step-up, RA 2 Select, has starter kits for about $400. Professionally installed Lutron systems cost a minimum of $1500 and go upwards of $30,000 for the top-of-the-line Lutron HomeWorks QS.
Lutron Caseta can operate with just a switch and a controller, but you need to add a smart bridge to control it from the app or to integrate it with a smart assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant. Prices will fluctuate over time, but are currently around $50 for a lamp dimmer and a Pico remote.
The Lutron Caseta starter kit, which adds the Smart Bridge, is double the price goes at around $100. Fortunately, you only need to buy the Smart Bridge once.
The next step up would be RA2 Select, which has starter kits that cost around $350 to $400.
Okay, those are the “cheap” systems. RadioRA and HomeWorks is where you will be spending a good amount of money.
For a 4-bedroom house, HomeWorks QS is going to cost around $15,000 for parts, not including labor. HomewWorks needs to be professionally installed. Keep in mind that you are locked into using HomeWorks and it will cost around $4,000 minimum to remove it and go with another system.
RadioRA has slightly less logic and a few other downgrades from HomeWorks. However, it cost about half the price. A good estimate for a 4-bedroom house is $7.500 for the Lutron parts, and then some for labor.

Weighing Wired Against Wireless Lighting
Which kind of lighting control system is right for you here’s a rock-’em, sock-’em five-round smackdown to determine your winner..

Going wireless is the way to go, right? After all, you probably already have a wireless computer network in your home. Maybe wireless printing. You may have cut the cord on phone service—perhaps even cable TV. So why not go wireless with electronic lighting control as well?
With so much working wirelessly in your home already, why not go with a wireless lighting control system that lets you shut off all your home’s lights from one location, dim lights and set cool scenes. It will save you the hassle of having to run wires from the keypads to a central processor, which is how most wired lighting control systems work.
“You should never have a home without wireless in the future,” says Roger Stamm, international sales director at Lutron Electronics , manufacturer of both wired and wireless lighting control systems.
So that’s it. Wireless wins, right?
Not so fast. There are advantages and disadvantages of using both technologies. And what you ultimately choose could depend on several factors:
- Is your home already built or is it in the process of being built?
- What’s your budget and what can you pay up front?
- The reliability of the system.
- The features and size of the system.
- And future add-ons and technologies.
Especially note what Stamm said last: “in the future.” Wireless lighting control is certainly in the here and now. And we’re seeing more and more of it—with good reasons. But it’s not the winner of the lighting world by default—and least not yet.
It looks like we’re going to need a lighting technology smackdown between the wired and wireless lighting. Let’s go a few rounds and rate them in various categories—and you can judge which one best fits your needs.
Round 1: New Construction vs. Retrofit
A few years ago, the answer was easy: If you’re building a new home or an addition and the walls aren’t closed, you wire, wire, wire.
“If you can wire, your first choice should be a wired network,” says Hector Morazan, international sales manager for high-end lighting system maker LiteTouch .
So why are we seeing more and more wireless systems in new homes? It could be that the walls were closed by the time a lighting system was specified. And let’s face it: wireless systems free you from the hassle of running wires.
“When the walls are up and everything’s done, wireless offers another option,” says Ian Hendler, director of business development for Leviton Manufacturing , a mid-market lighting systems maker.
“Wireless is for when all existing house wiring is done, and you don’t want the disruption of pulling new wires,” agrees Lutron’s Stamm.
That’s easy enough: Wire for a system if you can. If you can’t wire, go wireless.
But wait: There may be another consideration: “Wired is probably best for larger homes in new construction,” says Hendler.
So smaller homes, say under 3,000 square feet, should opt for wireless, even if the walls are open and wires can be run? That’s a personal choice, and may be tied to budget considerations.
Winner: It’s a draw. Wire in new construction, go wireless in retrofit.
Round 2: Cost Benefits
In total cost, it is generally perceived that wired lighting systems, by the nature of their typically larger sizes, are more expensive than smaller, wireless systems. For example, a typical wired Lutron HomeWorks system will cost $15,000 to $25,000 and up, while a wireless Lutron RadioRA starter package begins at about $1,300 and can cost $3,000 to $4,000 to cover a couple of rooms.
But guess what? In terms of the per-product pricing, wireless is still a bit more expensive. Lutron, for example, sells a wireless HomeWorks system, and its dimmers go for about $200, while the wired dimmers run between about $150 and $160. Wireless is more expensive per component because the RF (radio frequency) communications and sometimes the processing are built right into a dimmer, light switch or keypad.
Though, says Lutron’s Stamm, “The cost of wireless has come down closer to the cost of the wired lighting control system.”
The cumulative cost of a wired system typically reaches into the five figures because a home with a wired system tends to be larger houses—and with a wired system, you have to spend much more up front. You have to get all those wires into the walls before they close; therefore, the entire system is often bought and installed at one time.
With a wireless system, you can start smaller to save money, and add on as you can afford it. “It gives you the opportunity the scale back to do some things, and it is possible to add on in the future,” says Stamm. But go from a couple of rooms to most of the house with wireless, and you, too, could enter five-figure territory—while paying more per dimmers and keypads.
“If you can do a wired system, you can get a cost benefit,” says Leviton’s Hendler.
So wired strikes back. But wait … You also have to figure the cost of the labor of putting wires into the walls—especially if it’s a retrofit—and that can make any savings realized with a wired system a wash.
Then again, there’s set-up time to consider for a wireless system. The punches are flying fast and furious.
Winner: Advantage to wireless, because you can start with a much lower budget.
Round 3: Reliability
This is where you can run into problems with a wireless lighting system, though wireless lighting technologies and their reliability have improved steadily in recent years.
“Reliability with wired is rock solid,” says Leviton’s Handler.
“People still run wires for the feeling of reliability,” echoes Lutron’s Stamm. “And in some cases, wireless is not suitable.”
For example, concrete walls or metal mesh in the walls for plastering can significantly affect the range and reliability of wireless communications in a home—as well as the ability simply to switch on and off lights via a wireless control system.
“Even with WiFi coverage of about 200 feet, you could have problems with concrete,” says LiteTouch’s Morazan, who sees this problem frequently in southern climes.
“There are lots of ‘moving parts’ with wireless,” says Vantage Controls ‘ Andrew Wale. “And you have to pay attention to the integrity of the network.”
The good news is that wireless lighting control technologies have improved significantly in recent years. Lutron’s RadioRA 2, for example, communicates over multiple channels to avoid interference with the transmission of an RF signal. “Adding occupancy sensors and other devices for an RF network means more traffic,” says Stamm, “so we had to improve the technology and protocol in the network to handle that traffic.”
“Mesh” networks like ZigBee and Z-Wave, in which each enabled device like a ZigBee or Z-Wave dimmer can become a redundant communicating network node like a repeater, have improved in their reliability as well—so much so that LiteTouch uses a Hybrid wired and wireless lighting system with its modular FiveK processor, in which the wireless components are ZigBee-enabled, but only communicate point-to-point with the processor. Lutron’s RadioRA, by contrast, does not require a central processor.
“What has increased the reliability in wireless lighting is the increased processing power and open standards,” says Leviton’s Hendler, whose ViziaRF wireless lighting products use the Z-Wave protocol.
Nevertheless, “Hardwired solutions are more robust,” concludes Vantage’s Wale. Few would disagree.
Winner: Advantage to wired systems, but wireless is catching up.
Round 4: Features
Will you generally get more features with a hardwired lighting system? Yes. Is this due to the technical limitations of a wireless system? Not really, says Lutron’s Stamm.
The company’s wireless RadioRA system was first introduced for lower-cost and retrofit solutions, “so we limited the feature set a little bit. Now the cost of the technology has gotten better, so we can add those features back,” Stamm says.
The newer RadioRA 2, for example, can interface easily with motorized shading systems and works with all sorts of new devices and features like smart thermostats and plug-in appliance modules for energy management. It has also grown from being limited to 32 dimmers to being able to handle 200 devices. If your home needs more, you can upgrade to the wireless HomeWorks version that supports 1,500 devices.
So the feature limitations with wireless are largely the result of economics.
“With Vizia, the biggest thing we’re seeing is security guys pushing it real hard and bundling it with energy management,” says Leviton’s Hendler.
ViziaRF products can work with other Z-Wave devices like Mi Casa Verde’s Vera system, which has become a popular mid-market controller for Z-Wave audio/video, lighting, and more. One can set up a Leviton system, transfer control to Vera, and it can calculate all the energy being used at the switch level. It can even be controlled via an iPhone app, and work with Z-Wave compatible door locks. Very cool and affordable.
Sure, you can still get more features and more robustness from a wired system, but know what you want to do and research what each type of system can do for you.
Winner: Wired systems, for now.
Round 5: The Future Hardwired lighting control systems are still the better bet for being reliable and more robust. These advantages are becoming slimmer and slimmer, however, as wireless technologies improve and become more cost-effective. If you have open walls and can afford a wired system, by all means go for it.
Budget, however, may be the knockout punch for wireless over wired for most: You can start with a wireless lighting system at a much lower cost, and build on it from there. Just check for potential interference and range issues—and you should be golden. The reliability and robustness of wireless systems have improved greatly.
We’re also seeing some really cool technological applications, such as energy-saving kinetic energy, in which keypads can be powered on their own, using the energy resulting from key presses. PCS’ (Powerline Control Systems) PulseWorx RF system and Leviton’s commercial-grade LevNet wireless system use technology from EnOcean to do this, and our bet is that we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of it in the future. Though it shouldn’t be limited to wireless lighting control systems.
As Lutron’s Stamm says. “You should never have a home without wireless in its future.” And with many more retrofit home projects taking place today, you can see where this is going. But still, wire if you can.
Winner: Wireless

Palladiom Shading System
The Palladiom Shading System redefines the beauty of daylight control. Available as a wired or wire-free, battery-operated system these shades look beautiful from every angle, and are designed to be installed without a fascia, pocket, or recess in exposed applications.
Palladiom Bottom Rail
To accentuate the minimalist aesthetic of the Palladiom Shading System, Lutron has created the inventive Palladiom Bottom Rail. The design uses a groundbreaking method of clamping onto the fabric – regardless of the fabric thickness – to ensure that the hembar will always sit perfectly flat and perpendicular to the fabric plane. The subtle curve along the hembar face matches the roll diameter at the top of the shade. When the shade is fully open, the hembar disappears into the negative space behind the shade itself.
Design Options
End bracket.
Ideal for mounting on or above a window frame, the end bracket beautifully showcases each hand-finished surface. The arm and the foot of the bracket are the same depth, giving the overall aesthetic balance and grace. End brackets can be mounted to the wall or to the ceiling.
Center Bracket
Designed to structurally support two adjacent shades on a single bracket for a clean aesthetic that maintains a minimal light gap. Center brackets can be mounted to the wall or to the ceiling.
Jamb Bracket
The simplest of the three forms, the jamb bracket is designed to sit elegantly inside a window frame. The minimalist geometry extends the roller tube outward and into the wall, and the shade appears to float in midair.

The bottom rail of the Palladiom Shading System features distinctions no other shading system can match. Made of extruded aluminum, this design required an entirely new manufacturing and finishing process, much of which is done by hand. Thanks to a rubber fabric-pinching spline, it sits parallel to the window sill, without tilting one way or the other – and when the shade is raised, the bottom rail is shaped to fit perfectly in the negative space behind the roll. When visible, the Palladiom Bottom Rail is only 3/8” high, making it an extremely minimal and elegant aesthetic.

How much does a Lutron lighting system cost?

We are premium Lutron Dealers. We get asked this question a lot.
If you have found your way here from Google when looking at to cost of a lighting control system, you will need to ask yourself some questions first:
1) How important is lighting in your home?
2) What is your budget allocated to lighting?
Lutron has several different solutions for all budgets. The most straightforward approach is to get a professional involved so they can quote your system and value engineer the control system based on detailed specifications. We offer free site surveys or can quote from drawings.

Residential Systems are usually split into different types, which we will explain below.
Lutron Homeworks QS Lighting System:
Lutron Homeworks QS is Lutron's flagship residential lighting installation. You can have wireless, wired, or combined. You can integrate Sivoia QS Blinds, and the integration into other systems is almost guaranteed. HomeWorks also has patented technology like RTISS (real-time illumination stability system), which takes a rough 240v mains signal and cleans it prolonging lamp life and enhancing dimming.
All wiring from the electrician runs to a central location.
You would consider Lutron Homeworks QS when doing a new build and want the best quality dimming experience to complement your lighting design.
As Lutron HomeWorks QS is a tailored lighting experience, the only natural way to price the system up is to have a professional Lutron dealer survey your property.
Lutron Ra2 Select Wireless Lighting System:
This is Lutron's latest system to hit the market in late 2018 to early 2019. Ra2 Select is a wireless system based on a modular retrofit installation. Switches are all wireless, and so are the modules they communicate with.
It would be best to place a Lutron dimming/switching module where you want the light dimmed (at the light fitting itself). 5amp lighting is solved now with the latest 5amp Module.
You would consider using Ra2 Select if your budget was lower and you wanted to retrofit (install onto old cabling), not chase the walls, etc., and your installation was below 100 devices.
Lutron Ra2 Select will be cheaper than HomeWorks QS and will not have the same features. For retrofitting, you will find Lutron Ra2 Select is the better option.
Conclusion:
Whichever system you are looking at, with a Lutron lighting system, you are buying the best in the business; Lutron invented the electronic dimmer and spent a tremendous amount on research and development. , or having your path lights turn on when you get close to home, lights dimming down when you switch on your movie mode, all and much more, is possible with a Lutron Lighting system.

Lutron’s Alisse wall control range may be the most stylish smart light switches yet

Lutron has revealed its latest smart home controllers: the Alisse wall control range, which is a super stylish way to adjust your lights and control your connected blinds and shades.
Part of the Lutron HomeWorks whole-home automation system, the Alisse wall control panels are super skinny – just 3.2mm thick – smart light and blind switches that come in a range of shapes, sizes, configurations and colors.

They look so darn slick thanks to the Signature Metal finish of the collection. This is a range of handcrafted metal finishes – aged bronze, aged brass, brushed brass, champagne, satin nickel, graphite, and bright chrome – and there are also several painted metal colors to choose from as well: matte black, brilliant white, snow white, and architectural white.
So, you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that fits in well in your home.
There are also multiple button arrangements to choose from too, as well as a range of different sizes; single column, double column and triple column.
Finally, there is the option for custom engraving, so you can label the buttons, and the good news there is you can chop and change over time as the base unit is installed and programmed independent of the front plate, which simply snaps on.
The buttons also feature futuristic illumination options and are covered in a proprietary preservation process that will mean no fingerprints, stains or wear and tear.
As mentioned, you’ll need a Lutron HomeWorks system in place to use the new Alisse wall control panels ; these aren’t regular plug and play smart light switches.

FYI, I am in a US average city, and I quoted for Lutron Triothon shades, basic fabric, for one 5ft by 12ft one, it's $2,000. And smaller ones, it's around $1,000, including installation. For one with drapery that is ~10ft by 8ft, it's ~$6,000, also basic fabric. It's hard to say out of context.
RA3 and Homeworks QSX use the same software, so as far as glitches, there aren't many, certainly not RR3 specific ones. I've been working with Lutron systems exclusively for over 18 years now, the main difference is the max device capacity. QSX is like 8 or 10 thousand devices. I'm not really sure, I've never hit the limit.
The cost of a Lutron system varies greatly depending on what series you choose. A Lutron Caseta system starts at $100. The next step-up, RA 2 Select, has starter kits for about $400. Professionally installed Lutron systems cost a minimum of $1500 and go upwards of $30,000 for the top-of-the-line Lutron HomeWorks QS.
Not an easy comparison to give; two different types of systems. I just quoted the exact same system in both Homeworks and Ra3. It was approximate $6000 difference across 53 dimmers, 13 keypads and 2 repeaters. But the difference in cost doesn't compare to the difference in programming that is available in Homeworks.

If the system is old and in need of replacement, Lutron does have an upgrade path to accomplish this. Unreliable, unlikely. If the system is unreliable, like the other poster mentions, it is probably in need of some sort of service call. I would also suggest it might need to be re-programmed to meet your needs and expectations.
