.NET Aspire Preview 6: Enhanced Security and Testing, New Features, and More

Apr 26, 2024 3 min read

InfoQ Article Contest

This week Microsoft released  Preview 6  of the .NET Aspire project. Significant changes have been implemented to enhance the security and reliability of the platform. This release, version 8.0.0-preview.6.24214.1, introduces several noteworthy additions, like changes related to templates, components, dashboard, testing and more.

The breaking changes notable among these are related to the Service Discovery API and the removal of all obsolete APIs . Also, the team announces more breaking changes before the API is in the stable release.

Several adjustments have been made to improve the security of .NET Aspire. These enhancements include securing communication between various components such as the orchestrator, IDE, and dashboard, by utilizing TLS and API keys for authentication. As stated:

This prevents unauthorized users from accessing potentially sensitive information exposed by the app host project and the dashboard when running locally on your machine.

A significant change in this release is the addition of authentication requirements for accessing the dashboard. Given the sensitive nature of the data displayed on the dashboard, such as configuration details and telemetry data, authentication is now mandatory even in local development environments.

For users accessing .NET Aspire apps through Visual Studio or C# Dev Kit for Visual Studio Code, authentication occurs seamlessly without encountering a login page, thanks to updated Aspire tooling. However, users deploying .NET Aspire apps via the command line will need to perform an initial login to the dashboard. The required token is provided in the console output for users to copy and paste onto the login page, establishing a persistent authentication cookie.

The Preview 6 release introduces the following additions:  Aspire.Hosting.Qdrant which provides resource definition for configuring a Qdrant vector database resource within a .NET Aspire AppHost. Meanwhile, another one is the client called  Aspire.Qdrant.Client , offering a library for interacting with a Qdrant vector database.

Regarding the AppHost updates , preview 6 brings various new APIs and features to it, including the capability for users to specify custom container runtime arguments, pass project resources' arguments programmatically, customize environment variable names for connection strings, and ensure compatibility with other container runtimes through fully qualified container images.

In an official announcement, the team stated the importance of testing in the development process; new testing APIs have been introduced to assist in testing Aspire applications, following a pattern similar to the WebApplicationFactory in ASP.NET Core.

(Source: Microsoft Documentation ) Furthermore, updates have been made to the latest stable versions of the OpenTelemetry SDK and Instrumentation packages to simplify the OTLP exporter configuration using newer APIs. As reported, this feature automates the configuration of the OTLP exporter, directing metrics, traces, and logs to the designated OTLP endpoint specified within the OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_ENDPOINT environment variable.

Also, regarding OpenTelemetry the dependencies on pre-release versions have been removed, and replaced with the latest stable versions wherever possible. Additionally, the dependency on OpenTelemetry.Instrumentation.EventCounters has been removed.

Azure provisioning packages have been restructured into individual packages per service, allowing for selective installation based on user requirements. Users utilizing Azure provisioning packages directly, as stated are advised to update their project files to reference the new packages.

The Azure Developer CLI  now supports deploying projects, containers, or docker files with multiple endpoints, which will be mapped to the Azure Container App's ingress .

Finally, it has been reported that the .NET Aspire team is dedicated to issuing a new preview edition each month, to achieve a stable 8.0 release by the second quarter of 2024. This month developers could explore both Preview 5 and Preview 6.

Microsoft has stated that these scheduled releases are intended to offer developers consistent updates, incorporating new features and enhancements during the ongoing development phase.

  • How can I modify standard Sales pages in Oracle Visual Builder Studio?

Configure the Header on the Detail Page

The header on a record's detail page displays key details right at the top, so that users can quickly find what they need. The header displays a predefined set of attributes, but you can configure the region to display any attributes that your users are most interested in.

Where's the Header?

When you drill down to a record's detail page from a list page, the header displays at the top of the detail page.

This is a screenshot of the basic information region on an account record.

Configure the Header Region Using a Rule Set

You can modify the header using Oracle Visual Builder Studio. To modify any region on a page, you create a new rule that returns a custom layout.

In this example, let's look at adding the Type field to the header on the account detail page.

Navigate to the page that displays the area you want to extend.

In this example, navigate to the My Team's Accounts page and then click an account record.

To access Visual Builder Studio, you have one of two options:

Under the Settings and Actions menu, select Edit Page in Visual Builder Studio .

This screenshot shows how to enter into Oracle Visual Builder Studio.

If you don't see the Settings and Actions menu, then in the lower right corner of the page, hover over the Ask Oracle icon and click Edit Page in Visual Builder Studio .

This screenshot illustrates the link to access Oracle Visual Builder Studio.

If you're working on multiple projects, then select the Extend Redwood CX Sales project to keep your fragments extension separate from non-fragments changes.

If you're working in an active sandbox when you launch Visual Builder Studio, then Visual Builder Studio looks for a workspace that's associated with your sandbox. If you're not working in a sandbox, then Visual Builder Studio looks for a workspace without a sandbox. You might have to select a workspace if more than one workspace exists. If no workspace exists, then Visual Builder Studio automatically creates one for you.

When you enter into your workspace in Visual Builder Studio, the accounts-detail page is displayed in the Page Designer canvas.

This is a screenshot of how to display more of a page in the canvas.

Click the Design button.

This is a screenshot of the Design button.

On the Structure panel, click the accounts - Header Layout node.

The header is highlighted in the canvas.

This is a screenshot of the header on a detail page.

On the Properties pane, the rule set is also displayed.

This is a screenshot of the rule set for the header on an account page.

On the Properties pane, click the Header Layout rule set.

The Accounts layout tab > Rule Sets subtab displays. The Rule Sets subtab includes both a default layout as well as a default rule. Let's create a new rule.

This screenshot illustrates the default layout and default rule for the Header layout.

Click the Duplicate Rule icon.

This is a screenshot of how to duplicate the default rule.

In the Duplicate Rule dialog, accept the default rule name or enter a new name. The name you enter here is both the rule name and also the layout name, so enter a layout name that makes sense for you.

Also, make sure that the Also create a copy of the layout check box is selected.

This screenshot illustrates how to duplicate a rule.

The new rule displays at the top of the list of existing rules, which means that this rule will be evaluated first at runtime. If the rule's conditions are met, then the associated layout is displayed to the user.

In this example, we're not adding any conditions which means that the associated layout will always be displayed.

Modify the rule's copied layout.

Click the Open icon to edit the copied layout.

This screenshot illustrates how to edit the layout associated with a rule.

In the Filter field, enter type to locate the Type field.

Drag the Type field to an available section in the header.

In our example, drag the Type field to the item7 section.

This screenshot illustrates how to add a field to a layout.

Click the Preview button to see your changes in your runtime test environment.

This is a screenshot of the Preview button in Visual Builder Studio.

The preview link must include the application/container segments in the URL. If not, then change the preview link using the following example URL:

https://<servername>/fscmUI/redwood/cx-sales/application/container/accounts/accounts-detail?id=300000003513233&puid=7050&view=foldout

This screenshot illustrates the new field that was added to the Header layout.

Visual Studio trick to quickly find any file in solution

Andrew Arnott

August 2nd, 2008 0 0

You know that Find text box in the toolbar of Visual Studio?  Those of us who are keyboard-inclined probably never use it because Ctrl+F is quicker than moving your hand to the mouse.  But there is a hidden gem of a feature inside it that really makes me feel like a power user that I wanted to share.

That find box doubles as a Command Window prompt if you just start with a ‘>’ sign.  The feature in this that I use the most is this:

image

First jump up to that box using the keystroke Ctrl+/.  Now type ">of " and follow with the start of a filename.  As fast as you can type, Visual Studio searches your entire solution for a file or path that starts with the characters you type and you can quickly select that file (with the keyboard using the arrow keys if you wish) and open it.  If you’re working in a solution with several projects or folders, this can be a significant time saver.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Command Window, you can think of it like an Immediate Window that you use with the debugger, except that instead of controlling the debuggee, you’re controlling Visual Studio.  It’s like the VS macro editor, except that everything you type takes immediate effect.  To have this conveniently just a Ctrl+/, > keystroke away, especially when ">of " (short for Open File) is such a convenient acronym to search across your entire solution is awesome.

Andrew Arnott Principal Software Engineer, Visual Studio Platform

Assign licenses in the Visual Studio Subscriptions Admin Portal

  • 12 contributors

As a Visual Studio subscriptions admin, you can use the admin portal to assign subscriptions to individual users and groups of users.

For groups of users, you have choices for how you assign subscriptions.

  • You can assign subscriptions one at a time.
  • You can also quickly and easily upload lists of subscribers and their subscription information using the Bulk add feature.
  • If your organization uses Microsoft Entra ID, you can use Microsoft Entra groups to assign subscriptions to groups of users.

Add a single subscriber

Watch the video or read on to learn how to assign a Visual Studio subscription to a new user so that they can access the subscription benefits.

Sign in to the admin portal .

To assign a license to a single Visual Studio subscriber, at the top of the table, select Add , then choose Individual subscriber .

Add a single subscriber

A fly-out panel appears. Enter the information into the form fields for the new subscriber.

If your organization is using Microsoft Entra ID, typing the name of the subscriber in the Search Microsoft Entra ID box returns the names of any Microsoft Entra group members matching your criteria. After you select that person, sign-in email and notification email will automatically populate.

If the subscriber wasn't found in your organization, you can enter the subscriber's name in the Name field.

Enter the email address you want your subscriber to use to sign in. You can also select the Add a different notification email for receiving communication link and specify a different notification email address so subscribers and admins receive important subscription-related emails from Microsoft.

Subscriber details

In order for members of a Microsoft Entra tenant to be visible when you enter a subscriber name, the admin must be a member of the tenant.

Choose the subscription level you want to assign to this user. (The list only contains the subscription levels that were purchased as part of your agreement.)

If you want this subscriber to have access to software downloads when they sign into the Visual Studio Subscriptions Portal , make sure to leave the downloads toggle enabled in the Download Settings section. If you choose to disable downloads, the user doesn't have access to software downloads or product keys. The subscriber still has access to all other benefits included in the subscription.

Access to downloads

If you'd like to add your own reference notes to the subscription, you can do so in the Add reference section.

Add your own reference notes to each subscription

When you're done selecting options and entering data for the subscriber, choose Add at the bottom of the Add Subscriber fly-out.

Choose the Add button

Why use a different notification email address?

Some organizations set up their email services to block incoming emails from other domains. Blocking incoming emails means that subscribers and admins miss important communications:

  • Subscribers don't receive a notification when a subscription is assigned to them. They might also not be able to activate some of the included benefits.
  • Subscribers who assigned Visual Studio subscriptions with GitHub Enterprise don't receive the invitation to join your GitHub organization. They aren't able to access GitHub since they must accept the emailed invitation in order to gain access to your GitHub organization.
  • Admins aren't notified when they're added to an agreement. They don't receive monthly admin statements or notifications of feature changes that affect the way they manage subscriptions.

Using a notification email address lets you allow your subscribers to receive important communications about their subscriptions without changing their sign-in email addresses.

Resend assignment emails

After you add a subscriber, an assignment email is automatically sent to the new subscriber with further instructions. You can send the assignment email again at any time by selecting the subscriber and then selecting the Resend button in the top menu. To resend emails to multiple users, hold down the Ctrl key while selecting the subscribers. When you select the Resend button, you see a dialog asking you to confirm you want to resend to those subscribers.

@dotnetdev: I suggest either: a) removing the "or got" from your question or b) changing it to say "set only or got only" vs. "set or got".
