If one considers some of today’s main challenges – including climate change, pensions, public debt, and the labor market – an obvious conclusion emerges: It is relatively much worse to be young today than it was a quarter-century ago. Yet in most countries, the generational dimension is remarkably absent from the political debate. Fifty years ago, people spoke often, and loudly, of a “generation gap.” Today, that gap has become invisible. This is bad for the young, for democracy, and for social justice.

Start with climate change. Its containment requires changing habits and investing in emission reductions so that future generations will have a habitable planet. The alarm bell was first rung in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro; but over the last generation, little was done to contain emissions. And progress following the landmark agreement achieved in Paris in December is unlikely to be fast, because the accord is premised on postponing major efforts. Universal assent was made possible only by further delaying.

Given the massive inertia inherent in the greenhouse effect, the gap between responsible and irresponsible behavior will start resulting in different temperatures only in a quarter-century, and major consequences will follow only in 50 years. Anyone older than 60 today will hardly notice the difference between the two scenarios. But the fate of most citizens currently younger than 30 will be fundamentally affected. In due course, the respite gained by the older generations will have to be paid for by the younger ones.

Now consider debt. Since 1990, public debt has increased by about 40 percentage points of GDP in the European Union and the United States (and much more in Japan). Given near-zero interest rates, the corresponding drag on income is currently low; but, because inflation is virtually inexistent and growth is anemic, the debt ratios have only stabilized. So debt reduction will take longer than expected in the aftermath of the global crisis, which will deprive the coming generations of the fiscal space they might need to invest in climate action or in the containment of security threats.

Future pensions represent another form of debt. The pay-as-you-go (PAYG) systems in place in many countries are giant intergenerational transfer schemes. True, everyone is expected to contribute while they work, before becoming a recipient in retirement. In an ideal steady state, pension regimes would not redistribute income across cohorts born at different points in time. As specialists say, they would be generationally neutral.

But the baby boomers (those born from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s) paid little into the PAYG schemes because economic growth, population size, and their parents’ low life expectancy made financing pensions easy. All these factors have now gone into reverse: Growth has slowed, the baby boomers are a demographic bulge weighing on their children, and they are expected to live long.

Countries where pension reforms were introduced early have been able to limit the resulting burden on the young and keep the balance between generations approximately fair. But countries where reforms were delayed have allowed that balance to place the young at a disadvantage.

Finally, consider the labor market. Over the last decade, conditions for new entrants have worsened markedly in many countries. The number of young people categorized as NEET (neither in employment nor in education or training) currently stands at 10.2 million in the US and 14 million in the EU . Furthermore, many of those who have recently entered the labor market have suffered from job insecurity and repeated spells of unemployment. In continental Europe, especially, young workers are the first to suffer from economic downturns.

On all of these issues – climate, debt, pensions, and jobs – the younger generations have been made relatively worse off by developments over the last quarter-century. A telling symbol is that there is often more poverty among the young than among the elderly. This ought to be a major political issue, with significant implications for public finances, social protection, tax policy, and labor market regulation. And it reinforces the imperative of reviving growth through productivity-boosting policies.

Yet the new generation gap has had little direct political effect. It hardly arises in electoral debate and has generally not led to the emergence of new parties or movements. Instead, the generational divide shows up in electoral participation.

In the latest US mid-term elections, the turnout rate among younger citizens was less than 20%, compared to more than 50% for senior voters. Similar trends are observable in other countries. Despite the increased uncertainty they face, younger citizens are much more disengaged from electoral politics than their parents and grandparents were at the same age.

This generational gap in electoral participation explains why politicians care more about the elderly than about the young. But in aging societies, the more the young abstain from voting, the more decisions by parliaments and governments will be biased against their interests.

True, parents are generally not selfish. They help their children through private transfers and grants. But only those with income and wealth can provide meaningful support. The result of neglecting young people collectively while supporting them privately is social inequality on a massive scale.

How to redress generational biases in the political system is a key question for all democracies. Solutions do exist: mandatory voting, term limits for elected officials, and youth parliaments or special bodies to examine intergenerational issues, for example. But such measures are either difficult to implement or only moderately effective in view of the magnitude of the challenges.

Current trends are clearly unsustainable politically and socially. What is unclear is when and how young people will recognize that and make themselves heard.

We should always welcome fresh and new ideas. Accepting new changes indicates that we are advancing and developing significantly. Do You Need to Mind the Generation Gap?

Generational misunderstandings and culture clashes (generation gaps) are part of the human condition. It’s typical for each generation to create and embrace new music, dance, fashion, haircuts, technologies, lexicons, and gender expressions that distinguish them from prior generations.

To some extent, younger generations have always challenged and changed the existing culture and perceived older generations as old-fashioned, uncool, condescending, and out of touch. Meanwhile, older generations have always wailed about “today’s youth” and viewed youth cultures with puzzlement and an affront to their own familiar generational cultures. An amusing aspect of this recurrent type of generational conflict is that it’s always only a matter of time before the young become the old and cultural and technological changes put them on the other side of the generation gap.

Today’s version of generational culture clash features the Millennials (born from the early 80s to 1996) and Generation Z (1997-present) versus the Boomers (born from the mid-1940s to 1964). Fueled by media stories and memes spread on social media , it features the telltale signs of ingroup-outgroup bias (what you might think of as “tribalism”).

These signs include stereotyping , that is, negative generalizations about a group and its members where specific traits are assigned to most members, regardless of variation among members. For example, the current generational kerfuffle is around a Gen Z/Millenial meme that portrays Boomers as politically incorrect and technologically incompetent, and promotes a norm of dismissing them with “Ok Boomer.” The flip side: the "Ok Boomer" meme appears to be a reaction to videos of Boomer rants about young people being terrible and articles about Gen Z/Millenial narcissism , entitlement, and how they’re responsible for the demise of industries , malls, etc.

On January 15, 2020 US Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts was hearing a case on ageism when he asked, “Is 'Ok Boomer' ageist?” While I doubt that merely saying this to someone in the workplace would constitute legal proof of discrimination based on age, I do think there’s reason to be concerned about the age-based bias and tribalism it promotes.

Ingroup-outgroup bias includes the outgroup homogeneity effect. Basically, this means that we see outgroup members as more similar to each other than they are. Of course, there are things you can say that are generally true; for example, Millennials and Gen Zs tend to be more technologically and social media savvy than Boomers. But truthfully, none of these groups is as homogeneous as generational stereotypes suggest. Each of these groups is comprised of diverse individuals that vary in their politics , personalities, and work ethics . Each generational group is diverse as far as culture, race, economic class, gender, etc., which also means they're diverse as far as their past, present, and future social, economic, and political power.

Likewise, the fact that so many years are included in each of these generational categories makes it rather ridiculous to assume the experiences, lives, practices, and attitudes and opinions of a person are similar to most others in these generational categories. The early Boomers were young adults in the early 1960s when the late Boomers were born. Likewise for the Millennials, the oldest of which are almost 40 and the youngest of which are in their early 20s. In short, it’s foolhardy to generalize but so much about each group and to reduce the undesirable behavior of individuals to their age group.

Ingroup-outgroup biases are motivated by some interesting psychological forces, some of which appear to be at play here. For instance, according to social identity theory, when we put down an outgroup and its members, we feel good about our group and ourselves (this is called positive distinctiveness ). Believing in our group’s superiority and other groups’ inferiority boosts self-esteem and solidarity within our own group.

Unfortunately, the negative stereotypes of the other group that fuel our self-esteem and solidarity frequently create unnecessary distance and conflict between our group and the other group ( intergroup conflict ). After all, it's human nature to dislike and avoid those that appear to dislike us and to reciprocate the hate. For example, dismissing someone with a condescending “Ok Boomer” doesn’t exactly inspire friendly relations or listening and may invite a generational counterattack (an “Ok Boomerang” if you will). Despite this, Boomers could benefit from reading between the lines of “Ok Boomer” for the very real frustrations and fears of Millenials/Gen Zs. After all, empathy is an antidote to poisonous conflict.

In short, we all should actively resist this age-based nonsense since it seems to promote ageism and harms intergenerational relationships. It also works against the intergenerational conversation and cooperation we need to address the big problems our society faces today, including the economic policies and conditions that make so many people, regardless of age, feel economically insecure. Each generation possesses skills and knowledge useful to the other. We would all do well to act in ways to narrow, rather than widen the gap.

The relations between the generations were always complicated. The older people always indicate that it their time the situation was different and people behaved in the different way. At the same period, the younger generation says about the impact of the modern tendencies, changes of the way of life that give an opportunity to claim that the younger generation is more advanced.

However, as it clearly seen though the history, such attitude of the generations to each other was always the same. Therefore, although the technical facilities, cultural and economical changes impact the society, it is possible to claim that there are no significant changes in the relations between the generations, they are neither improving, nor getting worse.

Analyzing the cultural aspect within the conflict between generations, it is necessary to admit that such cultural issues as art, music, fashion have a tendency of the permanent change. Thereby, it is obvious that the different generations which do not have the same tastes and fashion, cannot understand each other’s needs. And especially this aspect is sharp within the relations between teenagers and their parents.

Today, the tradition hierarchy of family is different than two centuries ago. Elder members of family feel themselves as the intruders. From the other side, their children can easily send parents to the social houses. During the past century, the patterns of solidarity in friend and family relations had been changed (Allan 2008).

The transformation of the family and friendship aspects influences the Western communities since 1970s. People got more freedom and, as the result, the gap in the relations between young people and their parents increased (Thompson 1998).

From the other hand, the flexibility in the constructing of personal life and relations within the social groups is also increased. As the diversity in the priorization provided more facilities and made the personal choice more complex, the cultural changes of the past century can be considered as positive.

The relations between adult and old people can be also considered from the mentioned below position (Edmunds & Turner 2002, Huntley 2006). Thus, in the article Building Positive Relationships (2008) is written about the relations between 57-years old woman and her 89-years old mother.

As it understandable from the article, the conflict between the generations still exists, however, due to the physical disability of old mother, both woman try to find a solution and to rebuild their relations.

Being in the difficult situation, old people need more attention. For adult people, “the decline of a parent’s health, death of one parent or financial pressures often mean an aging parent will need increased social and emotional support or services from family – such as help with meals, cleaning, transportation or financial matters” ( Building Positive Relationships 2010).

In this context, it is necessary to admit the position of Klinenberg (2001) who indicates the tendency of increase of a number of old people who are estranged from their previous social circle and who live alone without a strong connection with their children.

Many old people have to live in the social establishments due to unwillingness of their younger relatives to care about them. This tendency demonstrates that the traditional cultural attitude to family, marriage and old parent is changed.

Obviously, the economic conditions influence generations. Wyn (2006) explores the rupture of the educational and employment outcomes as the peculiarity of the current situation of the young generation.

As it was normal order of things, today, such disbalance is widely spread that makes young people face with a number of problems while searching a job as “the transition processes for the majority of young people born after 1970 are different from those of the majority of their parents’ generation” (Wyn 2006, p. 6).

From this point of view, it is possible to notice that the younger generation has a significant reason to claim that the current situation on the labor market is more difficult than it was years ago.

According to the statistics provided by Wyn, “by the year 2000, at the age of 27, 68 per cent of the respondents had achieved permanent jobs, and 76 per cent were in full-time jobs” (Wyn 2006, p. 10). However, from the other hand, the elder generation has much more problems within this aspect. Although old people are more experienced, many employers prefer to accept a young person than the elder one.

Analyzing Mannheim’s essay The Problem of Generation , Pilcher (1994) indicates that “the notion of generation being widespread in everyday language as a way of understanding differences between age groups and as a means of locating individuals and groups within historical times” ( Mannheim’s sociology of generations: an undervalued legacy , p. 481).

Thereby, it is possible to say that the present problem existed during the history and never turned into the tendency of improvement or worsening. Different social models, tendencies, fashion and other issues dictate the rules of the relations between generations. Although a number of researchers indicate the increasing way of generation gap, history demonstrates that such tendencies were presented at all times.

Today, teenagers and young people feel themselves free and independent as the world is controlled by them. The number of old people is growing day by day as the result of the demographic characteristics. The present century requires more fast reaction, creative ideas and flexibility which are typical for younger generation. Wyn claims that today the process for becoming adult is different and emerging.

The typical issues of those changes are “an increasingly flexible labor market, dissolution of occupational boundaries, deregulation of labour, and increases in contrast, part-time employment” (2006, p. 12). At the same period, the cultural aspect also changes. Thus, the attitude of the young people to marriage and family is different while the level of fertility reduces.

Privatization of educational services diminishes the capability of young people to get better education. Changed attitude to the elder relatives led to a big number of the old people abandoned in the social houses. Generation gap is the key moment within the understanding of the relations between generations.

There is possible to say about the sharp conflict which is concerned with different parts of life and particularly with economic and cultural aspects. Young adults and elder people have the different possibilities to find a job, to increase their financial status according to the current tendencies in the society and they have different cultural tastes and traditional values.

However, although the cultural and economical changes impact the society and the generation gap is significant, it is necessary to claim that the relations between the generations are neither improving, nor getting worse. The historical knowledge provides the demonstration that such situation was always actual and topical.

How to deal with Generation Gap

I spent one evening in “Taco Bell” nibbling on Nachos. When I glanced around, I saw teenagers bounding up and down the restaurant ordering for a Taco or Nachos or Quesadilla’s for their parents.

Their parents in turn sat in stony silence with a foreboding look on their faces. Some were nibbling on a few pieces with a forced enjoyment look on their faces. The kids, on the other hand, had this absolute sense of bliss while they were eating.

The entire incident made me reflect upon the most famous term “Generation Gap”. A simple incident like “An evening in Taco Bell” can bring out this difference so glaringly, I never imagined.

Reasons for Generation Gap

There are a multitude of reasons for generation gap:

Respect for different opinions

My friend Shantha used to go out for movies with her boyfriend without telling her mother. Her idea was that it was not wrong to enjoy a movie with someone whom you want to spend your life, whereas her mother thought it was seriously wrong to go out with someone before marriage.

When her mother came to know, she beckoned me home to sort out things with Shantha. I was playing mediator between the two generations at a time when both had mental blocks about the other person’s thoughts. It is better to agree to disagree on any subject but respect the other person’s wishes.

Falling behind

Some time back, I met my cousin after a gap of 10 years. We were quite fond of movies at one point and would watch all movies in town. She asked me excitedly, did you watch ZNMD? Transformers? Inception? Don2? Ra-One? No. No. No. All I had watched was Puss in Boots, Tintin and My friend Ganesha.

Somewhere my priorities changed and I just got outdated with movies and songs.

It is important to keep in touch with your own interests before being the sacrificial lamb and putting yourself on a guillotine.

Resistance to change

My mom wants to learn facebook and she asks me everyday how to do it. The moment I tell her click here, she says she’s got something on the stove that is terribly important and that she will learn it later. I would say that she has at least conquered one step in that she wants to learn.

Most people don’t want to accept change. Be it in lifestyle or in technology.

Technical ignorance

Times are changing. While my parents learnt their alphabets on a slate, we learnt it in a book and the next generation learns it on an ipad or on educomp.

My mother terms educomp as a money making device, I wonder whether it is really required and my daughter loves educomp classes. More often than not, it takes time for us to shake a leg and by then the technology is so advanced that we are often outdated.

Social networking is a good example. Most parents are now onto social networking just to monitor their kids more than anything else. So, how to parents who are computer illiterates cope with this?

Peer pressure vs values

While all the above reasons relate to the generation above, this is one very good reason that boils down to the younger generation. I hate drinking but very often agree that its very nice to have a good drink along with company. My values don’t agree with drinking, but I very often shelve this aside to agree to drinking colleagues.

It is very difficult especially for teenagers to uphold values inculcated in us over peer pressure.

How to overcome generation gap?

Here are some useful tips on how to deal with generation gap

Strong communication

The first and foremost thing is effective communication without the fear of rejection. This needs to come from both ends. The generation below needs to put forth their ideas and the generation above should accept that without getting too judgmental.

Spending quality time

It is important to spend good quality time as a family to encourage familial ties and to help understand the changing ideas and ongoing events in each other’s lives.

It is important to bond with not only kids, but to know their friends and society to a certain extent. My in-laws are absolutely comfortable playing bowling with us.

Respect for other’s opinions

As I mentioned before, it’s perfectly fine to disagree, but we should at least agree to disagree and respect each other’s opinions on this matter. So, though I may be vary of educomp, I need to understand that my daughter loves it and it’s a very effective way of driving home certain facts.

Shedding Inertia

It is more a matter of laziness and resistance rather than anything else to move that butt and get to learn something new. Somehow the lethargy post exams remain through the rest of our lives.

It is just a matter of making up our mind to learn new things rather than actually learning it. Afterall the brain is as ready as we make it to be.

Better time management

Obviously, in order to attain all the above, we need to manage our time better.

Generation gaps are something that all of us usually face in everyday life. With a little effort, we can easily conquer this gap and ensure a happy and prosperous relationship. It might not be very difficult to enjoy a Wii with your kid or watch a classic black and weight with the younger generation.

There have been many changes in society due to the generation gap, especially in India, where the joint family practice was already prevalent. Later the approach of separate family settlement started in India , and this is also a result of the generation gap.

Nowadays, people need privacy and want to live their life in their way, but the joint family practice is the main obstacle. In this way, many people are living separate families. Similarly, many changes occurring at different levels of society are the result of the generation gap.

Generation Gap Indicators

1. family system.

People belonging to the older generation lived in a joint family and believed in sharing and caring for things. However, this ideology deteriorated over time. The present generation wants autonomy, and very few want to follow the traditional way of living in a joint family. There has been considerable change in the overall lifestyle of the people.

2. Languages

Hindi spoken by people before pre-independence is quite different from today’s Hindi language and this change did not come suddenly. This change came into presence from generation to generation. Each generation creates a distinct identity of its style. This change in form consistently makes conversation between people belonging to different ages at home as well as the workplace sometimes tricky.

Attitude at Work

While the people of the older generation were good at taking directions from elders and loyal to their officers, these days people get bored of their jobs very quickly and try to change their jobs or quit within a few years. Huh. Generation Y people practice in modernization and want to share and apply their unique ideas to their officers rather than blindly following their guidelines.

Behavior towards women

Women of older generations were mostly confined to the home. He was seen only as a maid who should take care of the house while going out and working was the job of men. After all, with the change of time, the philosophy of the society towards women has also changed. Today women have the right to work in any field of their choice and work with men.

Generation Classification

It has been seen that different generations of people behave differently in different situations. Generations have been categorized into various names based on their attitudes, beliefs, opinions and all beliefs. The extension of this classification is as follows:

Conservative

These people associate with the groups who were born before 1945 and are above 70 years of age. It is said that these people follow the order well and are satisfied by working efficiently.

They like to share their experiences with younger generations and to be around those who appreciate their knowledge and expertise. Further, they are known to be loyal to their officer. Most of them spend their full activity and lives for the same organization and remain faithful to that organization.

Generation X

These people were born between 1946 and 1965. People of this generation are hard workers, but most are not familiar with the feedback. They also need money and publicity in the form of prizes. Since most of them don’t live comfortably, they make sure that their children get everything they want. They want them to be appreciated. They wish their officers and children to accept that they are valuable and necessary. The absence of all these things creates annoyance between them.

Generation Y

It is a society of people born between 1980 and 1999. Most of them have just entered the working age. This group is interested in engaging in meaningful work and is also forward in giving their feedback towards their work.

People of this generation are quite creative. They like to work with creative individuals and in places where their creativity is allowed to be explored. It is a source of inspiration for them and keeps them alive. It is a generation that gets bored very quickly. Unlike traditionalists, they change their jobs quite frequently.

How To Fill This Gap?

People of the older origination should understand that their children are born in another age and hence their mindset is different from them. Parents and grandparents need to pay attention to why their children are behaving differently and have different opinions, rather than blindly applying their rules and ideas. Parents should be their friends to understand their children’s moods. On the other side, children and youngers should tribute to their parents.

The Bottom Line

Humankind is continually evolving and hence the ideologies and approach of people belonging to different generations have changed. Although it is perfectly fine to have a different opinion from any other, sometimes it can also become a cause of conflict.

Overcoming the generation gap

The dynamics at play in today’s global workforce are complex and fascinating – not least because there are now four generations working together, and sometimes five.

Each generation has its own idiosyncrasies, preferences, management styles and personal goals, which can lead to misunderstandings and even conflict at work.

It’s important to understand the motivations and reasoning behind each generation’s characteristics. For example, people in Generation Z, born since 1996, have grown up with technology all around them, gaining their first mobile phone as a child and never knowing the pre-Internet world.

Meanwhile the Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964) and Generation X (1965 to 1976) remember the workplace before PCs and email. They often prefer to speak face to face than operate in a virtual world.

Generation Y, or the Millennials, make up much of today’s workforce and are now aged between 25 and 43. Sometimes referred to as the Snowflake generation, there has been extensive commentary on this generation’s sense of entitlement – although in reality this is difficult to evidence.

The reason that we divide humanity into these various generations is to drive understanding and insight, yet it often takes a negative turn that end up with sweeping generalisations and division.

As leaders, our role is to find ways to unite the very diverse people that make up today’s international workforce. There are many ways to do this, but the methods that have proven successful in our own projects and placements include the following:

  • Encouraging multi-generational team working. The best way to get people to accept each other’s differences is to get them to work together. This might be through coaching and mentoring or by ensuring diversity across project teams and committees. People naturally seek out the things they have in common, so this can be a very effective approach.
  • Establishing clear cultural values. As leaders, i t’s important to be clear about how our people are expected to behave. There can be fundamental differences in how different generations like to work – a perfect example being the older generations’ preference for fixed, office-base hours versus Gen Y and Z’s desire to work remotely, to their own timetable. The conflict is easily resolved by setting the right context – in this case that it’s the output and the goal that matter, not the timing or location of work.
  • Embedding technology that drives collaboration. All generations want to feel accepted and valued at work as part of a cohesive team. Collaboration is at the root of this – yet this can be challenging in today’s workplace, where teams can be spread across different locations and even time zones. Make sure your organisation adopts the right technology to bring people together, to work concurrently on a shared platform, and to interact regularly.
  • Communicating at all levels. Another commonality across all ages of employee is that they each need and value of communication. Particularly in the digital age, where new technology and transformation are the norm, it is essential to ensure that everyone in your organisation understands the direction of travel and the reasoning behind it.

Modern families are a curious mix of new and old relationships. At the intersection of traditional beliefs and skepticism lies the generation gap. This gap is the difference in beliefs, mannerisms, and culture that emerges naturally between the two generations. However, it is not always a curse as one would imagine. My family is one such example. 

My parents and I form a nuclear family. I followed my parents’ religious and cultural beliefs as a child. Although as I grew in age and cognitive functioning, I began to question their beliefs and practices. While my parents did not respond kindly, my questions never ceased. 

My worldview became increasingly modern with the intake of social media and pop culture. On the other hand, my parents still found it challenging to navigate technology. One would expect the generation gap to pull people apart in such a case. Except with my family, it did not quite go that way.

Regardless of the different worlds my parents and I were growing into, we never stopped communicating openly. It was one of the first and most essential rules established in our house. The second was always to respect people around us, irrespective of age. So, even when we had differing opinions, we would take the time to listen and then reason what the logically or morally right stance was. We would understand where the conflict stemmed from and each compromise to meet the other halfway.

My parents, owing to their age and experience, helped me resolve many problems that otherwise seem unsolvable. In exchange, I help them understand the technology and modern lifestyles. So, while generation gaps exist, we must not let them alienate us from the people we love.

A generation gap is a distance in cultural and moral beliefs between two separate age groups. Every generation holds onto its own value sets and social sensibilities, creating disparity when these generations live together. 

I live in a joint family with my paternal grandparents, parents, uncle, aunt, siblings, and cousins. This paves the way for the existence of multiple generation gaps and the ensuing struggle. 

My grandparents are orthodox in their values and traditions, which means that some of their beliefs and prejudices are age-old and problematic in the modern world. On the other hand, my parents belong to the technological generation. They understand the modern lifestyle better and identify with my daily struggles. However, their belief systems are not entirely liberal due to their parental influences. All of this often becomes a cause for dispute in the family.

No matter how modern or traditional, all parents have a mental image of how they want their child to be. They are usually uncompromising about their stances and end up using their age as a factor to have their way. This creates a lack of understanding and communication in the family, causing one or both sides to feel alienated and side-lined. Over time, the generation gap widens and leaves no room for repair. 

It is natural to want to live your life by your principles. However, it should not come at the price of essential relationships. Having diverse views, ideas, and opinions can instead add to the family and help everyone grow individually. There will always be misunderstandings, but listening to people with empathy and cultivating a broader outlook can offset the generation gap and re-establish peace.

Should the tone of an essay on the generation gap always be positive?

Let the points that you have to offer to decide the tone of the essay. It is crucial to be authentic in your answers. Write an honest account if the question demands an answer from your personal experience. 

The examiners are going to base their scores on the following parameters:

  • Coherence and cohesion
  • Lexical resources
  • Grammatical range and accuracy
  • Task achievement

So, the tone of your answer essay will not impact your scores. The examiners will assess how well you can put your views into words and how you develop your arguments.

Does an essay on the generation gap have to be personal?

Once you receive your topic, read it multiple times to understand what is being asked. If your essay question asks for an expository essay, then your essay can be more general with some personal insights. 

However, the IELTS writing test usually consists of opinion essays. So, when asked to shed light on a personal experience, you can cite examples and instances from your personal life. 

Just remember to keep the language formal and professional.

Signal that you’re interested in everyone’s contributions, regardless of age.

Generational differences are real, but we tend to make too much of them. If the way you are managing the older or younger members of your team is overtly or subliminally signaling that you don’t value them, you will surely see the symptoms of hurt feelings: resistance, disengagement, anger, or insubordination. Take some time to consider each of your direct reports as a whole person. One thing you can count on is that regardless of age, everyone wants to be valued. Start by engaging each person in a conversation that demonstrates that you’re interested in their thoughts. If you listen openly, you’ll hear insights you can act on. For most people, young or old, seeing their ideas in action will reduce resistance and start to bridge any perceived generational divide.

I remember the first time I felt old as a manager — more than 10 years ago now. It was at a lunch with my new team when I mentioned the first “45” I bought with my own money as a kid. One of my direct reports, who was 10 years younger than me, looked at me blank-faced and asked, “What is a 45?” She had never seen the single-song vinyl record format. We came from different worlds. On the same team, I had another direct report who was 30 years older than me. She was quick to answer my question about her first 45, but I had never heard of the song or the artist. Over the next couple of years I had what I perceived as serious “generational issues” on my team. I learned a few lessons about managing across the generational divide.

Do you remember your first day of work? Chances are, you started out as a junior; both in terms of your job title and your age. So, you will probably have experience of working with managers and colleagues who were a generation, or two, older than you.

Today, as more young, tech-savvy workers become managers, and the number of people working past retirement age continues to climb , large age gaps are becoming increasingly common in all sorts of businesses and organizations.

Managing an age-diverse team, particularly if you are younger than some of the people in your team, is no mean feat. So how do you successfully bridge the generation gap at work?

Age Doesn't Equal Seniority

The first step is to accept that age no longer equates to seniority. It wasn't so long ago that age and length of service were key factors in workplace promotion.

Today, the traditional career ladder is less important as the younger generation of workers places more emphasis on issues such as work-life balance and job satisfaction. These are considered more important than job titles . As such, positions of authority are no longer a given as you get older. And knowledge of tech, social media, and " soft skills " have become base requirements for many senior roles.

As a result, we are now seeing more millennials taking up the management reins. It can be easy in these instances for ego and stereotypes to get in the way of a healthy work dynamic between a manager and their team. So, we wanted to hear your advice on how to successfully bridge the age divide at work.

Your Top Tips on How to Bridge the Generation Gap

It's not a competition.

It's not uncommon for older team members to feel threatened when younger colleagues are promoted above them. So be prepared for potentially hostile or competitive behavior to rear its ugly head, at least initially, and have a plan for dealing with it.

Some managers choose to address the topic at the very start of the process, to clear the air and to address any feelings of resentment or jealousy. This can be a great way to demonstrate an open and honest leadership style and invite helpful feedback.

But if you're a young manager and you don't feel comfortable revealing your age, don't worry. Your age is your business. The trouble is that your appearance (perhaps a youthful lack of wrinkles!) can be a giveaway. Even if you don't intend to address the issue, be prepared for the question, "How old actually are you?"

Gain Perspective

If a generation gap, or an age- or experience-related issue, is getting in the way of your ability to manage your team, try to see things from the other person's point of view. As Facebook user Tammy Touhey put it, "Understand that they are not you. After that, everything will begin to make sense."

We all have our own unique perspectives that enable us to do our jobs well. But, it can help to set aside your own experiences and beliefs in order to better understand your team as a whole. Actively listen to them, find out what they want to achieve, discuss ways that you can help them, and address their criticisms.

Twitter follower James Thompson says, "Be prepared to take a step further back than you might ordinarily, and listen properly, ears wide open."

Develop Mutual Respect

HR professional and Twitter user Wendy believes that age gaps should be approached "with respect."

Now that you have a better understanding of your team, it's time to start building trust and respect. Take a leaf out of Tammy Touhey's book and "leave your assumptions and biases at the door."

Regardless of your preconceptions about "snowflake" millennials or conservative "boomers," be respectful of the experience and skills that everyone brings to the table. Don't let your preconceived notions of other generations mislead you.

For example, millennials have faced the unfair stereotype that they are lazy, oversensitive and privileged. But Facebook friend Tamara Galhuber says that we shouldn't let stereotypes inform our management styles. She says we should build respect within teams by "asking questions more often than making assumptions regarding their motivation."

Learn From Each Generation

James Thompson asserts that older managers shouldn't "be the wise old owl too often." Just because you have more experience or expertise doesn't mean that you shouldn't be open to learning from your team.

Instead, accept that we all have unique skills, and we can all learn from one another. Facebook user Kay Wheatley says, " Each generation brings something different to the workplace. There is more than one way to do something and age diversity or the generation gap is the best one of all to demonstrate that."

Age divides can be tricky to navigate. It's easy to let resentment, lack of trust or stereotypes get in the way. But generation gaps can also be a great asset to your team. Take advantage of the wealth of skills and experience within your multi-generational team. Then, watch your organization thrive as a result.
