How to Cite a Conference Paper in MLA

Unpublished conference paper.

Like normal conference proceedings, we want to include the name of the entire proceedings, and if there is a specific presentation or paper being cited, include this information as well. We also want to include conference information (name of conference, date, and location) if not already stated in the name of the proceedings.

Because the conference proceedings / paper is unpublished, we will not include any publication information, but instead a description of the type of document and the year it was accessed. Additionally, as it is important to describe where the document can be found since there is no formal publisher, we have to include the location of the document. Like all citations in a works cited, try to incorporate as much information as you can find.

Works Cited Structure:

Last, First M. Title of Unpublished Conference Paper. Title of Conference, Date of Conference, Location. Unpublished conference paper. Institution Holding the Document, Location of Institution, Year of Access. Print.

Works Cited Example:

Langley, Dawn. Global Warming or Global Meltdown? Global Environmental Summit, May 2008, Zurich, Switzerland. Unpublished conference paper. Northwestern University Library, Evanston, 2008. Print.

• Do include the protocol (http:// or https://) with DOIs

• Do not include the protocol (http:// or https://) in URLs unless hyperlinking to the resource (unless using a software program such as EndNote that does not allow links without the protocol).

•   Cite by title if no author or editor is given.

• Additional information must be provided (depending on the type of electronic publication) to correctly identify that you accessed the document in an electronic format.

• The authors' names are given as they appear on the publication you have used, i.e., use full first name where provided or first name initials where initials only are provided.

• Titles are given maximal capitalisation (title case).

How to Cite a PowerPoint in MLA | Format & Examples

To cite a PowerPoint or other slide-based presentation in MLA style , the format depends on how you viewed the presentation.

If the slides are available to view online, the format is similar to that for a website : provide the author and title of the presentation, the name of the site in italics, the date it was posted, and the URL.

Use a slide number to indicate the location of the relevant information in in-text citations.

Citing a powerpoint you viewed in person, citing content reproduced in a powerpoint, frequently asked questions about mla citations.

If you viewed the PowerPoint in person and it isn’t available online, cite it using details of the context in which you viewed it: the name of the course, the date the lecture was given, and the name and location of your university.

You can also add the optional label “PowerPoint presentation” for clarity.

Note that citing an online version is the best option if possible, since it allows your reader to consult the presentation directly.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

If you want to cite content reproduced in a PowerPoint (like an image or quotation from someone other than the person who created the slides), it’s best to cite the original source if possible. Try looking for source information in the slides, or asking the lecturer.

However, if necessary, you can treat it as a source contained within a source. Cite details of the original source first, and then include details of the presentation as a container, including the slide where the relevant quote or image appears at the end.

For example, the following format shows how to cite an artwork from a presentation.

When you want to cite a PowerPoint or lecture notes from a lecture you viewed in person in MLA , check whether they can also be accessed online ; if so, this is the best version to cite, as it allows the reader to access the source.

If the material is not available online, use the details of where and when the presentation took place.

MLA recommends citing the original source wherever possible, rather than the source in which it is quoted or reproduced.

If this isn’t possible, cite the secondary source and use “qtd. in” (quoted in) in your MLA in-text citation . For example: (qtd. in Smith 233)

If a source is reproduced in full within another source (e.g. an image within a PowerPoint  or a poem in an article ), give details of the original source first, then include details of the secondary source as a container. For example:

If a source has no author, start the MLA Works Cited entry with the source title . Use a shortened version of the title in your MLA in-text citation .

If a source has no page numbers, you can use an alternative locator (e.g. a chapter number, or a timestamp for a video or audio source) to identify the relevant passage in your in-text citation. If the source has no numbered divisions, cite only the author’s name (or the title).

If you already named the author or title in your sentence, and there is no locator available, you don’t need a parenthetical citation:

  • Rajaram  argues that representations of migration are shaped by “cultural, political, and ideological interests.”
  • The homepage of The Correspondent describes it as “a movement for radically different news.”

MLA style is used in writing courses as well as the  humanities disciplines such as English and comparative literature. The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers is not available online.  Print copies are available at the Reference Desk at the PSU Library.

Citing Indigenous Traditional Knowledge

Oral Traditions and Traditional Knowledge of Indigenous can be cited as an interview, an oral presentation or a sound recording. 

  • If the information has been recorded (for example, as an audio file or an interview transcript), follow the ordinary directions for citing the appropriate for of media. 
  • If the information was not recorded, but was gained for a personal (unpublished) interview, list the interview by the name of the interviewee. Include the descriptor "Personal Interview" and the date of the interview. You may include the person's name, the name of the indigenous group or nation to which they belong, their location, and the date of the communication. 
  • For speeches, lectures, or other oral presentations (including conference presentations), start with the speaker's name. Then, five the titles of the speech (if any) in quotation marks. Follow with the title of the conference or meeting and then the name of the organization. Name the venue and the city (if the name of the city is not listed in the venue's name). Use the descriptor that appropriately expresses the type of presentation (e.g., Address, Lecture, Reading. Keynote Speech, Guest Lecture, Conference Presentation).  
  • In all cases, capitalize not only the name of the indigenous groups and nations (e.g., Crow, Seminole, Narragansett), but also most terms derived from indigenous culture (e.g., Oral Tradition, Elder, Traditional Knowledge, Vision Quest).

MLA Referencing – Citing a Conference Paper

Whether you’ve attended in person or read a report afterwards, conference papers can be useful sources for an essay. But MLA referencing has specific rules for how to cite a conference paper, so take note!

In-Text Citations for a Conference Paper

In-text citations for a conference paper follow standard MLA rules. For a published paper, this means naming the author in the text and giving page numbers in parentheses. For example:

Jeff Jones claims that cats display emotional intelligence (45).

Alternatively, you can give both in parentheses at the end of the sentence:

The situation is ‘not expected to end soon’ (Walker 42).

For an unpublished paper, no page numbers are required. You just need to make sure that you clearly refer to an entry in the Works Cited list:

At the 2005 Animals and Us Conference , Jones brought his cat on stage to demonstrate its emotional intelligence.

Citing Multiple Works by One Author

If you cite more than one paper by the same author, you should use the titles in the citations (as well as making sure to mention the author name):

Rankin initially derided the concept as ‘totally unworkable’ (‘Working in Retail’ 32), but later conceded that there are ‘certain merits’ (‘Making 9-5 Work for You’ 12).

Here ‘Working in Retail’ and ‘Making 9-5 Work for You’ are two papers delivered by Rankin. Making this clear ensures your reader can find the right entry in the Works Cited list.

When writing an entry in the Works Cited list for a paper from published conference proceedings, use the following format:

Surname, First Name. ‘Conference Paper Title’.  Conference Title, Date, Location , edited by Conference Editor(s), Publisher, Date of Publication, page numbers.

For example, we would list a published conference paper as follows:

Walker, Paul. ‘The Fallout from Capitalism’. Modern Economy , 27 May 2015, Sydney , edited by T. Barker, Roundhouse, 2016, pp. 39-47.

If the date and location are not included in the title of the proceedings, give them afterwards instead. For example:

Jones, Jeff. Understanding the Way Your Cat Thinks , 23 April 2015, Melbourne, edited by G. Simmons, Roundhouse, 2016, pp. 45-51.

For unpublished conference papers, moreover, the format differs:

Surname, First name. ‘Title of Paper’ . Title of Conference/Meeting, Organisation, Date, Venue, City. Conference.

In practice, then, an unpublished paper would look like the following:

Rankin, Peter. ‘Working in Retail’ . Increasing Profits, Retail Unpacked, 1 May 2015, Sydney, Australia. Conference.

For a Works Cited page, your citations need to be double spaced and have a hanging indent. A hanging indent just means that every line after the first in your citation is indented 0.5". 

In Microsoft Word (PC or Mac), highlight your citation and right click on it. Select "Paragraph" in the menu that appears, then under "Indentation" click on the Special drop down and select "Hanging". Make sure the "By" field is set to 0.5".

Digital Files

For digital files, determine the type of work and follow the rules for that citation, but include the name of the digital format (PDF, JPEG file,  Microsoft Word  file, MP3, et cetera) at the end of the citation. If applicable, a permalink, URL, or DOI can also be included.

For a personal interview, one which you conducted yourself, use the following format:

Name of interviewee. Personal interview. Date.

Smith, Jane. Personal interview. 19 May 2014.

If you are using a published interview, either in print or broadcast, again list the interview by the interviewee. If the interview is part of a larger work (book, TV program, film series) place the title of the interview in quotation marks and italicize the name of the larger work. If the interview does not have its own title, use the phrase "Interview by (name of interviewer)" instead.

Interviews published online follow the same format as other published interviews, but include a URL or permalink after the date of publication. A date of last access is also suggested.

Speeches and Lectures

Provide the speaker's name, title of the speech (if available) in quotation marks, title of the conference or meeting and name of the organization. Also include the name of the venue, city, and a description of the presentation. Descriptors include address, lecture, reading, keynote, and conference presentation.

For a panel discussion, including questions and discussion following a presentation, treat any panel members as authors and indicate if they are formal panelists. Follow the name(s) of the panelist(s) with the title of the discussion, which may be the same as a presentation- the presentation and the following discussion are cited separately. Follow the title with the title of the event, date, and location.

Pieces of Art

Physical works of art- paintings, sculptures, and photographs- are cited by providing the artist's name, title of the work, and date of completion. Be as accurate as possible with the date, but a year will do. Also include the name of the institution which houses the art and the location if not named in the institution.

If you are referencing a photographic reproduction of artwork, treat the book or website as a container and list the relevant information at the end of the citation- adding the title of the book in italics followed by edition, authors/editors, place of publication, and page of the photo.

Music is cited based on its medium. You will always start with the artist's name (this can be an individual or a band's name), followed by the title of the song, album title, production company/record label, and year of release. If the album was accessed digitally (via a service like Spotify or as an online original album), include a URL or permalink at the end of the citation.

Films and Television

Films are listed by title. Their citations should include director(s), film studio or distributor, and release year. If relevant to your paper, you can also include performer names after the director(s).

Citizen Kane . Directed by Orson Welles, performances by Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, and Dorothy Comingore, RKO Radio Pictures, 1941.

If you are focusing on the work of a particular director or performer, you may also cite with the name of the performer or director, followed by their title and the other key information.

Lucas, George, director.  Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.  Twentieth Century Fox, 1977.

Television is cited differently depending on if you are citing an episode from a DVD recording, broadcast, or digital service, or citing an entire series. In general, if citing an episode, you will start with the episode's title, followed by either the title of the show or the title of the collection. Writer(s) and director(s) are optional, and you will end the citation with the name of the distributor and the date of distribution. The following citation is for a DVD release of  Friends .

"The One Where Chandler Can't Cry."  Friends: The Complete Sixth Season , written by Andrew Reich and Ted Cohen, directed by Kevin Bright,

Warner Brothers, 2004.

Broadcast programs, both TV and radio, should include the network, station call letters (if applicable), and the city and date of broadcast.

"The Blessing Way."  The X-Files.  Fox, WXIA, Atlanta, 19 Jul. 1998.

For citing an episode from a streaming service, you will want to include season and episode number as well as a URL or permalink. Note that the date here is for the original broadcast of the episode.

To cite an entire series, alphabetize by the creator's last name, not the name of the series. Your date will be the year that the show ended, or the current year if the show is still airing.

As with films, you can also emphasize an aspect of a show, including a director or actor, by including that information in the citation.

To emphasize a character or actor as a whole in a show, follow the same formula as emphasizing a director or actor in a film. In this case the date range will encompass the entirety of the show's lifetime.

Cite your presentation

How to cite yourself, tips for undergraduate projects and research conference (uprc) presenters.

Adding your conference presentation (poster session, oral presentation, etc.) to your CV and/or ePortfolio is a great way to share your work with potential employers, program directors, scholarship committees, and more. Consider adding a section called “Presentations and Publications” or “Accepted Papers” or “Research Projects.” You’ll want to format it in the citation or reference style used in your discipline or area of study.

APA Style guidelines for a conference presentation

APA Style (7 th Edition) is used by Psychology, Education, some Sciences disciplines like Biology, and more. APA offers guidance for citing conference presentations on the APA Style website .

Author(s). (Year, Month and Date(s) of conference). Presentation title in italicized font [Description of presentation i.e. [Conference session] or [Paper presentation] or [Poster session] ]. Conference name, Conference location. Link to presentation if available.

MLA 9 th Edition is primarily used by Humanities. They do not have clear guidelines for citing conference presentations. SLCC Librarians advise including a presentation link when available, but this information may not align directly with MLA.

Citing a conference presentation in Chicago/Turabian Style

Chicago/Turabian Style, 17th Edition, is often used by History, Business, and Fine Arts disciplines. Guidelines for citing  “Lectures and papers or posters presented at meetings” in a bibliography can be found in  The Chicago Manual of Style's  section 4.217.

Citing a conference presentation in IEEE Style

IEEE Style, from the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, is used in Engineering fields and Computer Science. Guidance for citing a paper presented at a conference can be found in the full IEEE Reference Guide . SLCC Librarians advise including a presentation link when available. If it is not, omit "[Online]." and URL elements of reference.

CSE 8th Edition, also referred to as Scientific Style and Format , is used for natural sciences, including Biology. CSE provides guidelines for conference presentations and poster sessions as unpublished materials.

Consider your source's credibility. ask these questions:, contributor/author.

  • Has the author written several articles on the topic, and do they have the credentials to be an expert in their field?
  • Can you contact them? Do they have social media profiles?
  • Have other credible individuals referenced this source or author?
  • Book: What have reviews said about it?
  • What do you know about the publisher/sponsor? Are they well-respected?
  • Do they take responsibility for the content? Are they selective about what they publish?
  • Take a look at their other content. Do these other articles generally appear credible?
  • Does the author or the organization have a bias? Does bias make sense in relation to your argument?
  • Is the purpose of the content to inform, entertain, or to spread an agenda? Is there commercial intent?
  • Are there ads?
  • When was the source published or updated? Is there a date shown?
  • Does the publication date make sense in relation to the information presented to your argument?
  • Does the source even have a date?
  • Was it reproduced? If so, from where?
  • If it was reproduced, was it done so with permission? Copyright/disclaimer included?

MLA Referencing – Citing a Conference Paper

All the hot new research gets debuted at conferences. In fact, on the academic scene , anyone who’s anyone goes to conferences. But even if you’re not ready to attend in person, you may need to cite a conference paper in your work. Here’s how to do it using MLA referencing .

In-Text Citations for a Conference Paper

As with all MLA citations , when citing a conference paper, you should give the surname of the author and page numbers for the section you’re citing:

The image included a rabbit, a bat and a reindeer (Lewis 212).

The citation above, for example, points to page 212 in a paper by ‘Lewis’. If you have mentioned the author’s name in the main text, however, you do not need to repeat it. Just cite the page number instead:

Lewis calls these overlooked books ‘library ghosts’ (214).

You will then give the full publication details in the ‘Works Cited’ list .

Works Cited: Published Paper

If you’re citing a paper from published conference proceedings , the format to use is as follows:

Surname, First Name. ‘Paper Title’.  Proceedings Title, Conference Location and Date , edited by Editor Name(s), Publisher, Date of Publication.

Lewis, Jack. ‘Lost Literature: The Social Consequences of Stock Loss’. Proceedings of the International Library Conference, Amsterdam, 13-14 June , edited by W. Oldham, LCP Publications, 2015.

Works Cited: Unpublished Paper

You can also cite an unpublished conference paper. This could be something you saw presented at a conference, or it could be a paper you found on a conference or university website. The format for citing an unpublished paper is based on MLA rules for citing a public speech:

Surname, First Name. ‘Paper Title’. Conference Name, Location and Date. Conference Presentation.

You’ll notice that the conference details are not italicised here, unlike the published proceedings. If you found the unpublished paper online, moreover, you should include a URL. For instance, you could list an unpublished version of the Lewis paper cited above like this:

Lewis, Jack. ‘Lost Literature: The Social Consequences of Stock Loss’. International Library Conference, Amsterdam, 13-14 June 2015. Conference Presentation. www.internet-librarian.com/2015/papers-presented/lewis-stock-loss.pdf

If you have downloaded a paper from a specific database, you should include the database name before the URL as well. The key thing is making sure the reader can find the paper you’ve cited.
